Asia - tour highlights and travel tips.

asia tours reviews

It can often seem difficult to know where to start when considering holidays in Asia. Don’t let the gigantic size of Asia intimidate you. With enough research and some careful planning, you can see the best that Asia has to offer. Take part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, conquer the Great Wall of China , bask in the glory of the Taj Mahal or wander through the bright lights during a night out in Bangkok .

Travel Highlights

  • Skip the souvenir shops and peruse some of the largest markets in the world. From street food to artisanal goods, Asia’s markets have it all like the Chatuchak market in Bangkok , which is one of the world’s largest weekend markets or the Sukawati art market in Bali . Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo offers some of the freshest sushi you’ll ever taste.
  • Explore your spirituality by practising yoga and meditation in Varanasi along the Ganges river or visit a Buddhist monastery in Tibet.
  • Stroll through the rice terraces of blissful Bali .
  • Explore Northern Thailand, Central Laos or Northern Vietnam on two wheelers with the wind in your hair.
  • Get glitzy in Almaty , Kazakhstan’s bustling bars, sophisticated shopping malls and mesmerising museums.
  • Experience an interesting mix of Catholic and indigenous tradition during the Philippines biggest mardis gras: Ati-Atihan festival in Kalibo which takes place on Shrove Tuesday of the Christian calendar.
  • Embark on one of the longest train journeys in the world: the Trans-Asian Railway through China , Korea, Mongolia , Russia and Kazakhstan .

Travel Tips

  • Whatever your mode of transport - whether it’s a tuk tuk or a taxi - always ask a local how much it should be beforehand and agree on a price before you take the ride.
  • Manners matter. In Thailand, food is often served with a fork and a spoon. The fork is only used to place food on the spoon and it is often seen as rude to put the fork in your mouth.
  • Always keep toilet paper or tissues with you, and hand sanitizer.
  • Perfect planning is never possible, and having some gaps in your schedule means you can take locals up on their superior suggestions for a day sightseeing.
  • While most countries in Asia use different currencies, having some spare USD will always be helpful. Some accommodations will charge in USD, for example.
  • A bout of stomach flu is normal for first time travellers in Asia. Stick to busy restaurants or food stalls where the locals go and you’ll be fine.
  • Watch what you wear. Most cultures are very accepting of visitors and their unusual get-up. But being respectful of the local culture will go a long way. In India, for example, covering arms and legs will be appreciated, and removing shoes before entering someone’s home will make you a few extra friends.

South east asia travel faqs, what countries are a part of south east asia.

The region of South East Asia encompasses the following countries:

Philippines

Timor-Leste

Do I need a visa to travel to South East Asia?

Whether you need a visa to travel to South East Asia depends on what country you're a national of and which country you travel to.

Generally, passport holders from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom don't need visas to travel around South East Asia, but visa requirements will vary from country to country.

For example, citizens from the previously mentioned countries will need a visa to travel to Vietnam, however, they won't require a visa for Thailand.

If you're unsure of the visa requirements of the country you're traveling to, it's best to check on government-run websites or at your nearest embassy or consulate.

What is the internet access like in South East Asia?

The internet access in South East Asia can vary from country to country and between different regions in that country.

Most hotel chains or other accommodation options in major cities will have wi-fi, so it'll be easy to connect to the internet.

B uying an international SIM card with a local provider is recommended if you'd rather have no restrictions (and no exorbitant data roaming fees). This still doesn't mean you're guaranteed to have access to the internet though as the signal is often limited or unreliable in rural areas in countries such as Laos, Timor-Leste and Myanmar.

What are the toilets like in South East Asia?

The toilet facilities in South East Asia differ depending on which country you're in and what region of that country you're in.

Most major cities have westernized toilet facilities in places such as restaurants and hotels, but the further from urban areas you are, the more likely you'll find squat toilets, so set your expectations accordingly.

Toilet paper is also a rare find unless you're in major cities or popular tourist areas, so it's best to always pack your own in preparation.

Can I drink the water in South East Asia?

There aren't many countries in South East Asia where the tap water is recommended for drinking, especially in Laos and Cambodia.

To avoid getting sick, buy bottled water or use filtered water to brush your teeth.

You should also be mindful when showering, ask for drinks with no ice in them and peel all fruit before you eat them.

While Malaysia is considered to have the safest drinking water, it still has a different mineral content than your stomach might be used to so it's best to stick to filtered or bottled water where possible.

When is the best time to visit South East Asia?

The best time to travel to South East Asia is between November and February when the weather is relatively dry, humidity levels are low and temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable.

However, this is considered to be 'peak season' so expect large crowds at popular tourist destinations and increased accommodation prices in major cities.

If you want to avoid all of that, try traveling during the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November.

If you can, avoid traveling from June to August as this is South East Asia's rainy, cyclone season.

Is tipping common in South East Asia?

While it might not be as prevalent as it is in the US, tipping is still part of the culture in most South East Asian countries.

H ow much you tip and in what scenarios tipping is expected will differ depending on the country you travel in.

For example, tipping isn't expected or required in Malaysia and Singapore (and can even be considered rude), but countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are starting to accept tipping culture.

What currency will I need in South East Asia?

The currency you need when traveling in South East Asia depends on which countries you'll be visiting, with each country having its own currency.

Here is a list of countries with their currencies:

  • Vietnam - Vietnamese Dong (VND)
  • Indonesia - Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Singapore - Singapore Dollar (SGD)
  • Cambodia - Cambodian Riel (KHR)
  • Malaysia - Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)
  • Thailand - Thai Baht (THB)
  • Philippines - Philippine Peso (PHP)
  • Myanmar - Myanmar Kyat (MMK)
  • Timor-Leste - United States Dollars (USD)
  • Laos - Lao Kip (LAK)
  • Brunei - Brunei Dollar (BND)

Do I need to bring cash with me to South East Asia?

It's worth bringing cash with you if you travel around South East Asia, as paying with cash is still very prevalent in most countries.

Countries like Vietnam and Thailand are big on markets and hawker hall type cafeterias, so having cash is usually the easiest way to buy things and makes bargaining for items more accessible.

Is South East Asia safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Most of the countries in South East Asia have a thriving LGBTQIA+ scene, especially Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Discretion is still advised for travelers of the LGBTQIA+ community when it comes to public displays of affection, particularly if you're traveling away from the larger cities to more rural areas where acceptance of same-sex relationships may not be as common.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

My friend and w had a lot of fun in our trip to Tibet ~ Lasha, Shigatse and EBC. Our guide, Yonden was excellent, organised and knowleageable. He helped us with many things and made the trip a lot easier. The way she explained the history was real interesting. Our tour was organised by Cecilia. She was very helpful, organised, and always updated with information or checking on us if we are ok. Thank you so much to our guide Yonden, the driver and Cecilia. I will recommend Odyssey Travel for organising your trip.

10 Days Lijiang, Shangri-La, Kunming, Guilin, GZ tour CH-092152-Mr. B. A. + 3 pax

“Before everything, I must highlight the AOT and your excellent preparation and organization. We can say that everything went according to plan and in the best order. Our guides provided a perfect service, again thank you for your work. (Lijiang Tour Guide: Sandy, Shangri-La Tour Guide: Tom, Kunming Tour Guide: John) I can't leave without mentioning the excellent work of Ms. Lizzie, who did a lot to make our programs around Guilin a success. Thank you also for her work, she is a lovely creature. It was a delightful surprise to meet Wenmay in Guangzhou (GZ, CAN,) who like a true tour guide provided us with a wealth of information about China and her native land. We thank Wenmay very much for our sightseeing in Guangzhou (GZ, CAN, we will never forget her kindness and care. The drivers were tidy and polite, their cars were always clean inside and outside, and they drove safely. Dear Cindy, thank you for your patience and excellent work, always in our best interest, good itinerary, good choice of colleagues, and good implementation.”

5 Day Tour in Guilin/ Yangzhou

My family and I had a fantastic tour of Guilin and Yangshuo. Mandy was a very helpful tour operator, who helped arrange the itinerary according to our specifications and preferences. Everything worked out perfectly. Chanel was a great guide who took us through the Guilin Rice terraces and around Yangzhou. She was particularly patient with our children who had any questions! I highly recommend Odyssey for tours in China!

9 days trip to Shanghai and zhangjiajie

The tour from the planning stage itself was very well managed and all our needs and expectations were met beyond our imagination. Our tour operator Mandy was very supportive and always available to answer any questions. Also our tour guide David who we met in Zhangjiajie was a gem of a person and so helpful. We enjoyed our tour more because of how well David planned the day and was very transparent as to what to expect each day. He was more of a trusted friend then a tour guide to us.

Holidays in Bhutan

My husband and I spent a wonderful time in Bhutan. Thalia supported us throughout the whole process, from defining the best itinerary to getting the visa on time, choosing the best air connections and providing support during the whole trip. Her service and guidance have been just superb! 5 stars for her! We had a very knowledgeable and flexible guide and an excellent driver who took us safely to all our destinations. The itinerary was well designed and we managed to see everything we wanted and even more! Just a great experience that I would recomendable undoubtedly.

Unforgettable and awesome holiday in Tibet

Destination: Tibet Travel period : 14/2/24-24/2/24 Tour agent : Runny Tour : 9 Days-Lhasa-Nyingchi-Yamdrok-Shigatse ( Non-EBC) Thumbs up to Runny who pre arranged our trip to Tibet. She was responsive to our needs and questions. She also got us the seats we wanted for the train ride to Tibet. It was a good experience communicating with her. Our tour guide Lobsang T was very knowledgeable in Tibet culture and patient when explaining about attractions/places we visited. He was always on time and made sure that the pacing of the tour was good and not rushing. He was able to answer all questions asked about the attractions. Additionally , he was well versed in English and Mandarin. We enjoyed our trip very much and feel safe in his good hands. Our driver Trinley was friendly and had safe driving skills who made our journey between attractions comfortable. On our last day of tour , we had Max who took care of us well and travelled with us back to Lhasa. Will definitely recommend Asia Odyssey to any friends or family.

7 days Tibet Tour

Really appreciate our tour advisor, Isaac. He was incredibly friendly and responsive, always addressing our questions promptly regardless of the time or day. We greatly appreciate his help and how he was consistently available when needed. Isaac also tried his best to ensure that our trip went smoothly and was always willing to assist. Including helping us with the train tickets to Lhasa! I also want to highlight how wonderful it was to have Sam as our tour guide. He was patient, highly informative, and shared a wealth of knowledge about the history of the sites we visited. Sam was open to answering our questions and even enjoyed our jokes and light-hearted banter. The tour felt relaxed and well-paced, and we appreciated how kind and considerate he was, not only to us but also to others. It was clear that Sam is a fantastic person, and we were fortunate to have him as our guide! Our driver also contributed greatly to the enjoyment of our trip. He was fun and engaging, playing music during our endless car rides and even capturing some drone footage for us! Overall, our trip was a memorable experience thanks to AOT, Sam and our driver. Their efforts truly enhanced our journey, and we couldn't have had such a great time without them!

Fabulous and Ongoing Wonderful Assistance from Vicky

I met Vicky from Asia Odyssey travel several months ago when I was looking to book a Yangtze River Cruise from Chongqing. Vicky was extremely helpful, discussing all the different tours available and their respective pricing. Additionally, she was helpful in directing people to get me around Chongqing alone when I had neither a SIM card nor much fluency in Chinese. She has been kind, prompt, and very focused on helping me have the smoothest experience possible with my trip. We have stayed in touch since, and I have been so happy that I decided to book a Tibet tour through her next month. I highly recommend Vicky (and Asia Odyssey Travel), as she will go the extra mile to ensure that a China experience

Looking for insights to guide tour selection?

Initially, the quotations were not clear regarding the final fee. However, the tour consultant was patient to explain and provided insights to guide selection for suitable dates, hence the decision to sign-up for a tour with the company. Looking forward to the tour itself and hoping it will be as amazing as what other travellers have experienced.

Tour Director

Admire the iconic Great Wall of China

Feel the enormity of China's Great Wall, stretching as far as the eye can see through luscious green valleys. With some fragments built nearly 3000 years ago, the historical significance of this fortification is not to be missed. Tackle just a small length of this 21,000-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wander through Angkor Wat

Take a journey to the world's largest religious monument and watch the sunrise onto the stillness of the Angkor Wat temple complex. The crumbling mosey portions of the Hindu turned Buddhist structures hold an eerie beauty that will stir you to the very core.

Enjoy some quality 'Me' time in Thailand

Land of smiles, cheap cocktails and expert massages, a trip to Thailand is a chance to unwind. Spend days floating in the Gulf of Thailand and roaming through shopping markets, interrupted only by fragrant Panang curries and fresh coconuts to cool you down.

Sail Halong Bay

Climb aboard a traditional wooden boat and take in the beauty of Vietnam's sea of limestone islands. The dramatic setting of Halong Bay will dazzle as you drift slowly around the emerald waters past many families that call the water home. An essential part of Asia travel packages, it has been named one of the new natural wonders of the world.

Stroll down the busy streets of Tokyo

Home to almost 14-million, the streets of Tokyo buzz with an energy that is hard to resist. Navigate through the swarm of pedestrians at Shibuya Crossing and admire elaborate dress sense in Harajuku. Even those called by empty mountains will find joy in the scenes of Japan's capital.

Our top 5 things to do in Asia

This enormous content offers such a diverse banquet of experiences it can be hard to know where to begin. From the busy streets of Tokyo to the world's largest religious site found in Cambodia, we'll share the very best on our Asia vacation packages.

Temple of Heaven

The aptly named Temple of Heaven is a scene straight out of a mythical religious artwork. Stare up at the ceilings in the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests where a patchwork of color honors the seasons of the year. With construction finishing in the year 1420, this site holds limitless cultural significance.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Pay tribute to the victims of Cambodia's brutal genocide that saw a quarter of its population lost in the early 1970's. The photos of those lost haunt the walls of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in a building that was once a center for prison and interrogation.

Tokyo National Museum

Take an artistic journey along the Silk Road to ancient and medieval days gone by at Tokyo National Museum, the 6th largest art museum in the world. Hosting many of Japan's national treasures and religious artworks with immense cultural significance, allow a whole day to soak up all this monument has to offer.

Best museums in Asia

A tapestry of history, art and modern culture are found peppered across this continent in its endless list of museums. These are just some of the places we'll visit on our Asia escorted tours.

With almost a thousand years of history held in a roll of seaweed, rice and raw fish, don't miss this important part of Japanese culture. Though it's now readily available in most parts of the world, you will find something special about the sushi experience in its homeland.

Pho has traveled a long way since it originated in the Nam Định province of Vietnam. Slurp down many bowls from lively street vendors and modern cafes, enjoying variations of the hot rice noodle broth covered in herbs. The country of Vietnam summed up in one soupy dish.

Peking Duck

Taste the Imperial era in slices of seasoned crispy skin duck. Best wrapped in thin pancakes with hoisin sauce and greens, this Chinese specialty is delicious whether consumed in a busy street market or upmarket restaurant.

Best food in Asia

It's hard to compete with the delicious fragrant dishes that originate across the expanses of Asia. With chopsticks in hand, we'll uncover the very best and learn of the many rituals and traditions woven into this continent's culinary banquet.

What to pack for Asia

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Charcoal tablets

Many visit Asia armed with a pharmacy of pills for the chance of illness. Prevention is always better than cure; take a natural daily supplement such as charcoal to ensure nasties are evacuated from your system as quickly as possible.

Cool full-length clothes

Many parts of Asia boast a sunny tropical climate that's perfect for days flopped by a pool or sea. When exploring, it can be somewhat uncomfortable. Pack light, full-length clothes so you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Hand sanitizer

During your time in Asia, you might not always have access to soap and water to wash up before eating. Keep hand sanitizer available for clean hands and a happy stomach.

Insect Repellent

A bug spray will be your best protection against mosquitos and any other creepy crawlies that call Asia home. Pack a bottle to avoid unnecessary itch or illness.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Cultural Adventure Travel Asia holidays created by specialists

Asia holiday ideas.

The dream Asia holiday looks different for everyone, which is why no two trips we create look the same, either.

The itineraries you’ll find here are to fuel your inspiration: we want to spark your curiosity about what shape a cultural adventure across Asia might take, and get you excited about making it happen.

Maybe you’re dreaming of island hopping your way through Thailand’s tiny, white-fringed slices of paradise, or waking up at the crack of dawn to explore Cambodia’s ancient temples with just the birds for company.

Perhaps the perfect trip means munching your way through the very best street food Southeast Asia has to offer (and there’s a lot), getting up to your elbows making kimchi in South Korea, or meeting the gentlest of giants during a stay at a luxury, rainforest elephant sanctuary.

Or, you might not know what you’re looking for until you hear about it.

And that’s where our personal travel consultants come in. We’re here to ask the questions that help you work out what your perfect cultural adventure looks like – and then make it a reality.

Vietnam landscape

Vietnam's Landscapes

If you prefer country to city, we made this for you: packed with outdoors adventures in Vietnam’s most stunning scenery.

Front view of Haedong Yonggungsa Temple in Busan on a sunny day

Best of South Korea

South Korea might not look big on a map, but over the course of almost two weeks, this trip will show you that its size doesn’t matter at all – there’s so much to see, and you’ll be hitting all the top spots.

Palm trees at sunset

Wild Thailand Family Adventure

This family trip has it all: tropical beaches, jungle adventure, hands-on culture and (best of all) elephants.

Asia experiences

From hiking the steep trails of Laos’ misty cloud forests to eating sea urchin freshly caught by Jeju Island’s female free divers, the best trips are made up of experiences that are special because they’re utterly unique to the destination you’re in.

Connecting with locals by taking cooking classes to learn recipes that go back generations, staying in thoughtfully designed eco-lodges built to connect you with nature, cruising slowly down the Mekong Delta as coconut boats bob by, or visiting tucked-away corner cafes that quietly serve the best coffee around – they're all experiences you won’t forget.

And that’s what our cultural adventures are all about. The experiences we’ve listed here give a snapshot of what’s possible when you travel with us. They’re ones you’ll tell your friends about, struggle to put into words, and think about when you’re planning your next trip.

Lens Review: RF28mm f/2.8 STM vs. RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM in Travel and Street

Fast and portable prime lenses in moderately wide focal lengths like 28mm or 35mm (full-frame equivalent) make excellent walkaround lenses. They’re less likely to weigh you down, have a field of view that’s easy to compose with, and their bright maximum apertures easily handle darker locations and night scenes. In this article, we compare how the RF28mm f/2.8 STM and RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM fare in real life. It should give you an idea of which one to pick! Scroll to the end for an eye-opening composition tip. (Reported by: Maiko Fukui, Digital Camera Magazine)

Checkpoint #1: Portability

How easily do they fit into any everyday bag?

asia tours reviews

Above: The lenses mounted on the EOS R8

When you’re out exploring the streets, regardless of whether you’re in your hometown or a foreign country, chances are you’d prefer to remain inconspicuous by not using an obvious camera bag.

asia tours reviews

For travel and walkarounds, I usually carry just 1 to 2 lenses in a normal everyday bag, protected by a padded camera pouch. The picture shows my favourite tote bag: it’s easy to take out the camera, lightweight, and sized nicely enough to stay out of the way in a crowd.

Verdict:  Both are convenient, but the RF28mm f/2.8 STM earns extra points for its pancake design

Both the RF28mm f/2.8 STM and RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM are small enough to fit easily into my camera pouch. However, the RF28mm f/2.8 STM is much flatter—it barely protrudes beyond the EOS R8’s grip. This makes it less likely to hit or get caught onto something in your bag, or when you’re going around with the camera slung over your shoulder or around your neck.

Checkpoint #2: Focal length

Which focal length is easier to use?

The RF28mm f/2.8 STM’s field of view is wider, whereas the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM’s field of view is closer to what you see. However, how much difference that makes depends on the scene.

When subjects are further away

RF28mm f/2.8 STM

asia tours reviews

RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM

When shooting wider scenes with subjects that are further away, the 7mm difference in focal length doesn’t make much of a difference. Framing is equally easy on both lenses.

Close-up subjects

asia tours reviews

The difference in the image becomes obvious when shooting close-ups: notice how the building in the background looks bigger on the 35mm lens. If you examine the outlines of the red post box carefully, you will also notice that the RF28mm f/2.8 STM renders them with stronger contrast, whereas they are finer on the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM.

Verdict: It depends on your style and preferences

The RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is good for faithful, straightforward snaps of scenes you see. However, the wider 28mm field of view might feel more familiar to those used to shooting with smartphone cameras.

While not directly related to the focal length, you might also want to consider the lens renderings. Images from the RF28mm f/2.8 STM seem to have sharper, harder outlines and more aberrations. The resulting look resembles instant film, which happens to be quite trendy nowadays! Meanwhile, the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM provides a simpler, more natural aesthetic.

Checkpoint #3: Bokeh (shallow focus effects)

How different is the bokeh?

The RF28mm f/2.8 STM’s maximum aperture is f/2.8, while that of the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is f/1.8. That’s 1 1/3 stops’ difference, which doesn’t seem too big…or does it?

Compare the images below.

RF28mm f/2.8 STM @ f/2.8

RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM @ f/2.8

asia tours reviews

RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM @ f/1.8

asia tours reviews

If you recall, a longer focal length intensifies bokeh . That’s why the longer RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM produces a more blurred-out background than the RF28mm f/2.8 STM at the same f/2.8 aperture setting.

Verdict: Better bokeh with the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM

If bokeh is a huge reason why you’re getting a prime lens, I would recommend the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. At f/2.8, it already shows a distinct advantage over the RF28mm f/2.8 STM; wide-open at f/1.8, the background becomes buttery smooth.

On the other hand, the RF28mm f/2.8 produces decent bokeh considering its compact size, and should be sufficient for users where bokeh quality isn’t as high priority.

Checkpoint #4: Close-up shooting

Do both lenses let you shoot close enough?

With its 0.5x half-macro capabilities , the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is clearly better equipped for close-up shooting. You’ll easily be able to fill the frame with details of food and flowers.

While the RF28mm f/2.8 STM doesn’t let you get as close, it does let you get close enough for a decent food photo that also captures the surrounding context, like the food example below.

asia tours reviews

The differences in close-up capability and bokeh are obvious when photographing flowers. You can get much closer to the flower with the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM.

asia tours reviews

The RF28mm f/2.8 STM lets you get close enough to capture food in front of you with some context, all from a comfortable seated position. Note the slight perspective distortion, inevitable because of the wider angle.

Verdict: RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM gives more close-up flexibility

The RF28mm f/2.8 STM has its strengths, but the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM gives you more creative options.

Why the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM?

I feel the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM offers the best fit for my shooting style. I prefer an angle-of-view that is closer to my natural vision, and I love the beautiful, buttery bokeh that the lens creates.

To me, the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM also offers more creative possibilities. The RF28mm f/2.8 STM’s wider angle of view produces images like paintings, whereas the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM straddles the middle ground: images can look wide angle or somewhat telephoto depending on your composition and aperture setting decisions, leaving much more room to play with. It’s a wonderful choice both as an everyday lens that lives on your camera and a travel lens that lets you do more with less gear.

What I liked about the RF28mm f/2.8 STM

Autofocusing on the RF28mm f/2.8 STM felt more seamless, and its corner-to-corner sharpness was beyond expectation what you would normally expect on a pancake lens. Portability is also where it excels—it’s so compact and lightweight, you should be able to shoot all day with it without feeling any strain. You wouldn’t go wrong picking it as your travel lens.

You’ll probably like the RF28mm f/2.8 STM better if you want crisp, contrasty images similar to those from a smartphone camera. But for more creative versatility such as when shooting close-ups, creating bokeh, and playing with shooting distances, pick the RF35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM.

Composition technique: Framing secondary subjects for the focal length

A secondary subject can elevate your photos of food or decorative items. The next time you decide to include them in the frame, think of how you can take advantage of the focal length in your composition. It’s not just about the field of view!

asia tours reviews

I composed this image for 28mm. With its wider field of view, you can include more context (secondary subjects) in front of and behind the main subject so that the image tells a story.

asia tours reviews

35mm limits what you can include in the picture, so you’ll have to approach composition differently. Here, I’ve made use of the lens’ bokeh capabilities to put the foreground and background objects out of focus. This simplifies the surroundings, drawing attention to the steam. You can almost smell the wafting coffee aroma.

Pro advice: When using a prime lens, if you can’t get something to fit in the frame, don’t force it. Work on creating the best composition with what you have. You’ll have a lot more fun!
