The more time that passed from the day in November 1971 that Jazz-rock pioneers Colosseum split up , the less likely it seemed that they would ever work together again. However, more than 30 years down the line, Jon Hiseman, Chris Farlowe, Clem Clempson, Dave Greenslade and Mark Clarke are still going strong. Tragically, Saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith succumbed to an 18 month long battle with ill heath and died at the end of 2004. Jon’s long time wife and internationally-renowned saxophonist Barbara Thompson stepped into his shoes through his long ordeal and has now become a permanent member.

Great interest in the re-mastered CD releases of their original albums helped persuade drummer Hiseman to give the nod for the return of Colosseum. Following a one off sold out reunion festival date in June 94 they embarked on a 60-date 1995 European tour and the release of another live CD and DVD (“Colosseum LiveS -The Reunion Concerts 1994”) featuring all the Colosseum favourites, all executed in a manner which showed they had lost none of their fire and energy.

The band’s break-up in 1971 meant their final release had been a live album which was rated as one of their finest offerings – and it is perhaps fitting that they should have kicked off the return of Colosseum with another live effort.

In the summers of 1997 and 2003 the six of them re-convened at Temple Music, the Sutton, Surrey, Jon & Barbara’s recording studio and recorded two new studio albums, “Bread & Circuses” & “Tomorrows Blues.”

With both their own and collective reputations to protect, the sheer professionalism of Hiseman,(drums) Farlowe (vocals), Heckstall- Smith (saxes). Clempson (guitar), Greenslade (keyboards) and Clarke (bass) would always be enough to avoid any danger of sullying the band’s memory, frozen in time and perfectly preserved over the intervening years. As Jon Hiseman recently said, “ the reviews have been embarrassing……….embarrassingly GOOD!”

Fans who have savoured the moment on the Reunion Concerts CD where Colosseum once again sweep full-tilt into a thunderous version of Those About To Die…. will know that the flamboyant enthusiasm is still there in all its glory. But there has always been more to Colosseum than explosive, hell-for-leather driving Jazz-rock; such awesome power always shares the platform with bitter-sweet delicate touches, and the whole experience brings impassioned playing full of majestic grandeur – delivered with the dynamic confidence of virtuoso musicians who know exactly what they are doing.

Hiseman and Heckstall-Smith had first met up in the Graham Bond Organisation in 1966 – Hiseman having replaced Ginger Baker, who’d left for Cream. They both left Bond the following year; the drummer Joining Georgie Fame’s band, the sax man – who’d earlier been a key figure in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated – heading for John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. But 1968 saw Hiseman in Mayall’s band as well, the pair of them featuring on the Bare Wires album.

The turning point was Greenslade’s 50th birthday party. His old Colosseum mates – with the exception of America-based Clarke – had been invited as surprise guests, and Hiseman found himself cornered by the others. In fact circumstances had contrived to change the picture as far as he was concerned; much of his post-Colosseum work had been done in conjunction with his wife, and she’d recently decided that she wanted to concentrate for a time on the classical sphere rather than jazz. Hiseman could see space ahead – room enough to set wheels in motion for Colosseum.

Even given the undoubted deep-rooted affection for the band, there was still considerable surprise about the way promoters rushed to offer dates for a comeback European tour – and about how they were received by the fans, some of them not even born when the group split in ’71. A further string of 30- odd concert hall-type shows in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Italy promoted the new studio album in late ‘97. All roads finally led back to Colosseum.

His instinct was the main reason for the group’s break-up. “I think that bands are living things and that at the end of the day they have a kind of natural life.” he says. “We’d done the live album and it had been incredibly successful, and I felt that we wouldn’t do anything as good.” When Clempson told him he was considering an offer to replace Peter Frampton in Humble Pie, Hiseman advised him to take it up. “I told him I was in two minds about whether to continue anyway. I said ‘we’ve done what we set out to achieve – and it could be downhill from now on’. Rather than have Colosseum find another guitarist and then start work on a new album, Hiseman decreed that they had reached the end of the road.

Even with line-up changes, the group had only lasted three years. But Hiseman readily acknowledges its importance. “Every member of the band feels that their time with this band was a very special time, even though there were other times when more money was made and more records were sold,” he says. “There are certain moments when you get together with a certain combination of people, and it works.”

Even Chris Farlowe – whose career has encompassed a number one hit with 1966’s Jagger-Richard song “Out of Time” as well as a front-line position on the blues stage – points to his spell with Colosseum as his favourite period. “It was great to join a band like that,” he says. “ I’m a vocalist who needs to be stretched – and I love being able to do things that other people can’t do.”

Farlowe, 63, looks forward to singing the old material alongside the brand new compositions – and knows there is a vast ready-made audience eager for the band’s every appearance. “Every time I was in Germany touring with my band, promoters would come up to me and say “what is Colosseum doing? Why don’t you get it together again?” And people would always shout out for Colosseum numbers,” he says.

Much of the new material has been written by Dave Greenslade, who formed his own band after Colosseum – Greenslade – and later developed a highly- successful career composing theme and incidental music for TV. He’d played with Hiseman in a schooldays band and been with Farlowe during the singer’s Sixties pop heyday – and it was at Greenslade’s 50th birthday party that “after a few drinks some of us started to lobby Jon to get back into it again. We ganged up on him in a dark corner and he couldn’t escape” he says.

History 1968–1971

Colosseum, one of the first bands to fuse jazz, rock & blues, were formed in Spring 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman with tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith, who had previously worked together in the New Jazz Orchestra and in The Graham Bond Organisation, where Hiseman had replaced Ginger Baker in 1966. They met up again early in 1968 when they both played in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, during which time they played on the Bare Wires album. Childhood friend Dave Greenslade was quickly recruited on organ, as was bass player Tony Reeves who had also known both Hiseman and Greenslade since being teenage musicians in South East London. The band’s line-up was completed, after lengthy auditions, by Jim Roche on guitar and James Litherland (guitar & vocals), although Roche only recorded one track before departing.

Their first album, Those Who Are About to Die Salute You, which opened with the Bond composition “Walkin’ in the Park”, was released by the Philips’ Fontana label in early 1969. In March the same year they were invited to take part in Supershow, a two-day filmed jam session, along with Modern Jazz Quartet, Led Zeppelin, Jack Bruce, Roland Kirk Quartet, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, and Juicy Lucy.

Colosseum’s second album, later in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, notable as the first release on Philip’s newly launched Vertigo label, established to sign and develop artists that did not fit the main Philips’ brand, and the first label to sign heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath.

For the third album, The Grass Is Greener, released only in the United States in 1970, Dave “Clem” Clempson replaced James Litherland. Louis Cennamo then briefly replaced Tony Reeves on bass, but was replaced in turn by Mark Clarke within a month. Then Hiseman recruited vocalist Chris Farlowe to enable Clempson to concentrate on guitar. This lineup had already partly recorded the 1970 album Daughter of Time.

In March 1971, the band recorded concerts at the Big Apple Club in Brighton and at Manchester University. Hiseman was impressed with the atmosphere at the Manchester show, and the band returned five days later for a free concert that was also recorded. The recordings were released as a live double album Colosseum Live in 1971. In October 1971 the original band broke up.

Interim 1971–1994

After the band split, Jon Hiseman formed Tempest with bassist Mark Clarke; Dave Greenslade formed Greenslade together with Tony Reeves. Chris Farlowe joined Atomic Rooster; and Dick Heckstall-Smith embarked on a solo career. Clem Clempson joined the hit group Humble Pie.

Hiseman formed another group called Colosseum II in 1975, with a stronger orientation towards jazz-fusion rock, which featured guitarist Gary Moore and Don Airey on keyboards. They released three albums before disbanding in 1978.

Reunion 1994–2015

Colosseum reunited in 1994 with the same line-up as when they split in 1971.

Colosseum reunited on 24 June 1994 at the Freiburg Zelt Musik Festival, then, a few months later, they played a concert in Cologne on 28 October at E-Werk which was recorded for a TV Special and later released in 1995 as a CD and video. It was then re-released in 2004 as a DVD. The rejuvenated band then played a lengthy tour of mainly German concerts. A second tour followed in 1997, to promote their new studio album “Bread and Circuses”. They also appeared at major festivals in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

In 2003 they toured on the back of “Tomorrow’s Blues” CD, followed also by gigs in England in 2004. Hiseman’s wife, saxophonist Barbara Thompson, joined the band on various occasions before the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith in December 2004, before becoming a permanent member of the band.

In 2005, there were three memorial concerts for Dick Heckstall-Smith, one in Hamburg Germany and two in England. Then on 24 September 2005 they performed in Moscow, followed by more concerts in 2006. In 2007, the made their first appearance in Japan and returned to play more dates in Germany. Further tours of Europe were made in 2010.

In October 2010, Jon Hiseman’s biography, Playing the Band – The Musical Life of Jon Hiseman , was published. In November 2012, a Kindle version (with minor re-edits) of Playing the Band was published.

Colosseum played their “Summer 2011” tour of 22 gigs in Germany, Italy, Austria, Finland and Poland. The tour started in June and ended on 20 August in Germany, Rostock, at Bad Doberan “Zappanale” festival. According to the interview of the bandleader Jon Hiseman, Bad Doberan was the last concert of the band. Their second ‘last’ concert was in Poland, Slupsk, at “Legends of Rock” festival on 13 August 2011 and the third ‘last’ concert in Finland, Äänekoski, at “Keitelejazz” festival on the 23 July 2011. These announcements were based on Barbara’s worsening Parkinson’s condition preventing her from playing. However, with the arrival of new medication, her ability to play was renewed, so those announcements proved to be premature and the band continued to record and play until 2015.

More studio releases followed, as expanded editions of Valentyne Suite and Colosseum Live, and several compilation sets of earlier work. From 2011 to 2014, Colosseum gradually recorded their final album, titled “Time on our Side”, which was eventually released late in 2014, to coincide with their final flurry of dates in Germany and the UK. These included 24 concerts during 2014 in Central Europe, starting 23 October at Steinegg Festival, Collepietra, Italy. Followed by concerts in February 2015 before ending on 28 of that month at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London. At all these concerts, Jon Hiseman confirmed from the stage that this tour would be Colosseum’s last.

After 23 years, the band played what Jon referred to as ‘the last hurrah!’ before a packed and very appreciative audience at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London on 28 February 2015. Special ‘guest’ was Ana Gracey, the daughter of Jon Hiseman and Barbara Thompson, who sang her own composition, “Blues to Music”, with Chris Farlowe, which was also included on the final Colosseum CD.

Second Reunion 2020–

Colosseum reunited again after the death of Jon Hiseman to play selected shows in 2020. The line-up is Chris Farlowe, Clem Clempson and Mark Clarke joined by Kim Nishikawara (sax), Adrian Askew (keys, organ) and Malcolm Mortimore (drums).

Colosseum Opening Hours and Tickets

Opening Hours:

The Colosseum opens daily at 9 am and closes 1 hour before sunset daily. Be sure to check the official website for up-to-date information as the hours vary seasonally.

Admission to the Colosseum includes the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. They are visible from the Colosseum but fenced into a different area. Once you enter Palatine Hill, you can visit the Forum without exiting the fenced-in area. They are connected by the Via Sacra. Once there, you will easily find your way.

How Long To Spend at the Colosseum

Short Answer:  2 to 3 hours

The Colosseum is massive for a 2,000-year-old stadium. Once inside, there are tons of things to do, depending on which type of ticket you get. With general admission, you’ll have access to the first and second floors.

If you join a guided tour of the Colosseum , you can visit the arena floor, underground, and top tiers. At times, as high as the fifth tier—which is very cool!

You should plan on spending at least 60 minutes in each area, give or take. If you bring a snack, you could easily walk around and explore the entire ancient city for 4 or 5 hours. And bringing a reusable water bottle is a must. There are fountains at the Colosseum and Roman Forum you can use to refill your bottle when needed.

Facts and History of the Colosseum

Domus Aurea and Nero’s Fire

Domus Aurea translates to the House of Gold and was a great sprawling palace built by Emperor Nero. He built it in the area affected by the great fire of A.D. 64, down the valley between the Palatine, Esquiline, and Caelian Hills. This is why Nero was famously blamed for causing the fire.  Historians speculate his golden compound was between 100 and 300 acres in the center of Rome. Much of the compound was dismantled after Nero’s death by one Emperor after another. Vespasian most famously removed a massive lake Nero had built to construct the Colosseum.

Construction

Construction on the Colosseum began in A.D. 72 by Emperor Vespasian, the first of three Flavian Dynasty Emperors. Titus had just returned from a major victory in Jerusalem with an estimated 60,000 Jewish slaves. The building was completed in A.D. 80 but modifications and upgrades were made under Emperor Domitian.

Why Was the Colosseum Built?  

Estimates place Colosseum occupancy between 50,000 and 80,000 people. It was built to host events of bloodshed and battle, which were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire. The Romans were war-loving people and the games represented that. Gladiatorial fights came in all different types from 1:1 fights to full battles, including naval battles .

Flavian Amphitheatre

If you construct a building as epic as the Colosseum, you’re going to want to put your name on it. The Flavian dynasty did, but the name was eventually forgotten and replaced by a nickname—the Colosseum. Nero built a massive statue outside the Colosseum, known as the Colossal Statue of Nero! It was a 30-meter tall bronze statue of the sun god Sole with Nero’s head perched on top. The statue may have survived until the 5th century when it was most likely dismantled during one of the three major sacks of Rome. It was long enough to all but erase the Flavian dynasty’s legacy from history.

The Last Games

The last recorded game inside the Colosseum was on January 1st A.D. 404. Saint Telemachus apparently tried to stop a fight in the Colosseum midway through and was stoned to death. At the time, Rome was ruled by Christians. Emperor Honorius did nothing to stop the martyrdom, which happened in A.D. 391, but it is written that the event inspired and changed him and eventually he brought an end to the fighting.

Earthquakes and Damage

The Colosseum has lived a good long life. For a 2000-year-old complex monument, it’s in great shape. There were a number of major earthquakes after the glory of the Roman Empire that caused damage: A powerful quake in A.D. 443 followed by two more in A.D. 484 and A.D. 508. Repairs would have been made, however, and the human vs. animal games would have continued until A.D. 523. For the next 700 years, things were calm but the building became a sort of stone quarry for many who were looking to make a living or create art. After a serious amount of self-inflicted damage by Romans, a quake in 1349 caused the southern third of the Colosseum to collapse.

The Colosseum Quarry

The quake of 1349 was probably good news for many who were building in Rome. Materials that were out of reach were now on the ground and accessible. They were used for art, buildings, and much of what you see in Rome. This continued for over 400 years until Pope Benedict XIV decreed in 1749 that the Colosseum was a sacred site of Christian martyrdom and was no longer allowed to be vandalized. There are many arguments that Christians never died in the Colosseum, but nevertheless, Pope Benedict XIV saved the Colosseum.

Restorations

Soon after the decree of 1749, popes began commissioning projects to restore the Colosseum. There was heavy foliage and plant life growing inside the Colosseum, which would have tremendous negative effects on the building over time. These were removed, and in 1807 a project began to reinforce the outer ring of the Colosseum, which can be seen today. 

Triangular brick support now reinforces the Colosseum. There were also excavations that took place throughout the 19th century. After over a thousand years of abusing the structure due to poor economic conditions, it was finally time to preserve it. By the 1930s, the Colosseum looked very similar to what you see today—other than some cool things like a replica of a trap door and an elevator being built into the stage.

Two major cleaning projects happened in our era: from 1993 to 2000 and another in 2013, which was sponsored by Tod’s shoe company, an ultra-popular Italian designer.

Interior Improvements 

Restorations have been made to the arena floor, underground, and on the third, fourth, and fifth levels that allow tours to explore these areas. Companies like ours are now able to run extremely cool and exclusive tours to these restricted areas.

How To Get To the Colosseum

The metro is by far the easiest way to arrive. Metro line B stops at the Colosseo station. As soon as you walk outside, it’s the first huge ancient amphitheater on the left.

The bus is also pretty easy. Many buses run by the Colosseum, but check the bus map and make sure the bus number you are about to get on goes by Colosseo. Here are a few buses that pass by the Colosseum in Rome: 40, 51, 60, 75, 81, 175, and 204.

The Colosseum is at the center of three intersecting roads and is easily reachable on foot.  Via di Fori Imperiali, Via Labicana, and Via Celio Vibenna all sort of wrap around the structure. If you can find one of those roads, you’ll most likely be able to see the Colosseum and take it from there.

Obviously, using a map app on your phone is a great way to get around. If you are a bus person, Roma Bus is the top free app.

Outside the Colosseum 

1. the base of the colossal statue of nero.

Right across from the Colosseum metro station and in front of the Colosseum is the base of the Colossal Statue of Nero. It isn’t much to look at today, but an important element to pass by on your way in. You’ll see a plaque reading “Area Del Basamento del Colosseo di Nerone.”

2. The Arch of Constantine

Flavius Valerius Constantinus or Constantine the Great to most of us was the first Christian Emperor of Rome. A triumphant arch was built and dedicated to him for his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in A.D. 312. It is an epic arch right in front of the Colosseum.

3. The Outer Ring

The first thing you’ll notice when you get closer to the Colosseum is that it was built from multiple rings to support seating. The remaining portion of the outer ring will be facing you as you walk out of the metro station and definitely puts this building into perspective. Three sets of arches stand on top of one another to form the 159-foot tall outer ring.

4. Ludus Magnus

Just across from the Colosseum on Via di San Giovanni in Laterano sits the remains of the Ludus Magnus, which was the closest and greatest gladiator training school in the empire. It has many cells for slaves and even an underground tunnel directly connected to the Colosseum.

5. Flavian Amphitheatre Plaque

An important thing to note is that the Colosseum is only a nickname for the structure. The building is actually named the Flavian Amphitheatre after the dynasty that built it. See the plaque attached to the middle ring of the Colosseum directly facing the Temple of Venus.

Inside the Colosseum 

6. the arena floor.

The word  arena means sand, and the Colosseum is apparently where the use of the word derives. They’d say, “down on the arena,” which referred to the sand that covered the stage. Now we use the word when referring to stadiums as a whole like “basketball arena,” for example. You can’t access this area with general admission, but we have a guided tour that takes you onto the arena floor !

7. The Underground (Hypogeum)

Yes, underneath the Colosseum there is a complex labyrinth of tunnels that were used by gladiators and event organizers. It is without a doubt the most exclusive area of the Colosseum. General admission won’t get you there, but we have a Colosseum Underground tour that takes you there.

8. The Cross

In the year 2000, a cross was placed inside the Colosseum in memory of all the Christian martyrs that were killed inside the Colosseum. While it is almost definite that Christian slaves died inside the Colosseum, it is dubious they died because they were Christian. The Romans didn’t really care about the Christians or persecute them heavily.

9. Second Floor Exhibit of Colosseum: Concession Stand Food and Drink

Find the elevator inside the Colosseum on the second floor. There you will find some very cool artefacts, including cups and spoons used inside the building. There were concession stands similar to a modern stadium that sold all types of foods, including oysters! We’re not as different as you’d think.

10. Second Floor Balcony

Once out of the concession stand area, look down at the center of the Colosseum and head clock-wise. When you get to the apex of the ellipse you’ll find an awesome balcony to snap a pick. Look down to your right and you’ll see a reconstruction of some of the original seats of the Colosseum.

11. Third, Fourth, and Fifth Floors (currently closed)

These areas are often closed, but if they are open during your visit, try to secure access to the top tiers of the Colosseum. You’ll find yourself at a far higher altitude than expected. The view is amazing, but you’d be where the slaves and lowest citizens sat. We have a tour that covers the area. If you see departure times that means it’s open. It also includes the Underground and Arena Floor.

On Palatine Hill

From the Colosseum exit, head to the Palatine Hill entrance with your Colosseum admission ticket. You can find this entrance on Via di San Gregorio, 30 .

12. Claudian Aqueduct

Aqua Claudia was one of the four great Roman aqueducts. Caligula started the project and Claudius completed it. It is approximately 43 miles long (69 kilometers), most of which is underground.

The duct emerges from the ground as it reaches Rome and, where the ground slopes downward, it reaches over 100 feet (32 meters) high. This was an important detail if you wanted to get good water pressure on the top of a hill. You’ll see a piece of this structure after entering the Palatine Hill entrance

13. Hippodrome Circus of Domitian

From here, head up the hill until you see the massive Hippodrome of Domitian—a private events stadium for the famed emperor of Rome and the last of the Flavians.

14. Caldrons for Heating Floors

They won’t look like much, but as you pass by the north-facing end of the Hippodrome (the only way you can walk) you’ll see some ruins on your right.  These are caldrons for heating water. When Domitian built his palace, he wanted heated floors. Don’t we all!

15. Mosiac Palace Floors

As you pass into the Domus Augustana or House of Augustus, be sure to look down and see mosaic floors beneath you. Know that many famed personalities in Rome from the first, second, and third centuries would have walked on these same pieces of tile.

16. Circus Maximus Balcony

As you walk across the hill, step inside the walls of the palaces and head towards the Circus Maximus. You’ll be standing on a massive balcony, which was part of the structure of the Temple of Apollo and has the best view of the Circus Maximus.

17. Casa di Livia

Attached to the House of Augustus on the east-facing hill, you’ll find the Casa di Livia. If timed correctly, you can get inside and see some amazing frescoes dating back thousands of years.

In the Roman Forum

18. arch of titus.

Walking down into the Forum, you’ll find the Arch of Titus. It was built to commemorate Titus’ famed victory that quelled the revolt in Jerusalem. He brought 60,000 slaves and uncountable wealth back to Rome, which resulted in the Colosseum being built.

19. Via Sacra

The road running through the arch is known as the Via Sacra. It is a sacred and triumphant road that the victorious walk down when returning from battle.

20. Temple of Venus 

With the Arch of Titus at your back and the Colosseum in front of you, you’ll see a structure to your left. Head to that building and work your way towards the Colosseum. There is a great balcony to take a picture from (see the feature image for this article). The Temple of Venus, built under Emperor Hadrian, was a massive temple with a great view of the Colosseum.

21. Basilica of Constantine (Temple of Maxentius)

As you leave the Temple of Venus the way you came in, you’ll see a massive structure on your right. That is the remains of the Basilica of Constantine. The structure was started by Maxentius. Unfortunately for him, Constantine beat him in battle and made sure to name the building after the victor, himself.

22. Temple of Romulus

Don’t mistake this with the Romulus who founded Rome. This temple was dedicated to Valerius Romulus who was the son of Maxentius and ultimately deified. Eventually, paganism was outlawed and this temple was converted to the Basilica os Santi Coma e Damiano. The bronze doors are said to be original to the A.D. 309 structure.

23. Temple of Antoninus and Faustina

This temple was built in A.D. 141 by Emperor Antoninus Pius for his late wife who was deified. Upon the death and deification of Antoninus, his name was added to the temple.

24. Temple of the Vestas and Eternal Flame of Rome

While facing the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, turn around and you’ll see a circular altar in a shaded area on a slight hill. This is where the vestal virgins cared for the famed Eternal Flame of Rome.

25. Temple of Julius Caesar

Possibly the main event for many lovers of Roman history, the Temple of Julius Caesar is in the center of the Roman Forum for all to worship. You’ll still find flowers on his altar from the many Romans who thank him for what he accomplished.

26. The Curia (Senate House)

One of the best-preserved structures in the Forum due to many renovations, this building is the famous place where Roman senators argued, postured, and debated.

27. Arch of Septimius Severus

To the left of the Curia, you’ll find the massive Arch of Septimius Severus constructed in A.D. 203. This arch became the model for the Arch of Constantine 100 years later, which is more visible in front of the Colosseum. It was built to commemorate the Parthian victories of Caracalla and Geta, initially joint emperors.

28. Temple of Saturn

Possibly your last stop in the Roman Forum, see the remains of the Temple of Saturn, an ancient Roman temple that dates as early as 497 B.C.

29. Mamertine Prison

Just outside the northern-facing exit of the Forum, you’ll find the Mamertine Prison. It’s not actually inside the structure, so make sure you are ready to leave as you won’t be allowed reentry. According to Christian dogma, St. Peter called this prison home in the first century prior to escaping. You can see the depiction in the Raphael Rooms of the Vatican Museum.

Places To Eat Nearby

Unfortunately, there are currently no snack stands or food and beverage shops in any of the archeological areas. There are a few fountains: One on the 2nd level of the Colosseum by the elevators, one next to the arch of Titus, and the third on the via sacra a few meters down from the arch of Titus. Normally less busy.

Colosseo Metro Caffé: € | Refreshments —Right inside the metro Colosseum, there is a bar that serves coffee, sandwiches, and more. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want a quick bite to eat before going inside or a snack on the run. You can also grab a beer here and take it with you. You’ll find the café at Piazza del Colosseo 58.

Trattoria Luzzi : € | Light Meals —Some people say this place has gone downhill, but the food tastes the same to me. It’s great for pasta or any other typical Roman dishes. They also serve pizza, which I have surprisingly never had but the prices are good and I am sure the pizza is too.

Ai Tre Scalini : €€ | Dinner and Wine —This is a little further away from the Colosseum on foot, but it’s perfect for a long lunch or dinner. They serve tons of wine by the glass and seasonal dishes. It has a really cozy atmosphere that gets a little crowded, but it’s always worth it.

Maddow Blog | H.R. McMaster struggled to understand ‘Putin’s hold on Trump’

It’s not exactly a secret that many officials who worked closely with Donald Trump during his presidency are not on board with his bid for a second term. Not only is Trump’s former vice president withholding his support for the Republican’s 2024 candidacy, and not only is Trump’s former White House chief of staff condemning his former boss , but Trump’s former White House press secretary and communications director appeared at the Democratic convention last week and explained how and why the GOP nominee lies.

Retired Army Gen. H.R. McMaster offers another special case.

McMaster became the White House national security adviser in early 2017, shortly after Michael Flynn was fired after two weeks on the job. In the 14 months that followed, the retired general got a first-hand look at how Trump operated, and as he writes in his new book, “At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House,” McMaster wasn’t altogether impressed.

Based on the latest reporting, the “ blistering ” book describes Oval Office meetings as “exercises in competitive sycophancy,” complains of Trump’s “ outlandish “ national security ideas, and alerts readers to the fact that the GOP nominee was a president who was “ addicted to adulation ” and easily manipulated by flattery .

But perhaps most notable of all is the book’s description of McMaster’s concerns about Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. The Wall Street Journal published a striking excerpt , which began “From the beginning of my time as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, in February 2017, I found that discussions of Vladimir Putin and Russia were difficult to have with the president.”

[O]ur relationship reached a breaking point after I attended the Munich Security Conference in February 2018. ... [W]hat made news was the response I gave to a question from a member of the Russian Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly, who suggested cooperation between Moscow and Washington in the area of cybersecurity. After joking that I doubted there would be any Russian cyber experts available because they were all engaged in subverting our democracies, I described evidence cited in the Mueller investigation’s indictments of Russians for election interference in 2016 as “incontrovertible.”

Trump, McMaster quickly learned, was “furious” that his national security adviser had told the truth in public, and his “aversion” to McMaster soon intensified — in part because the retired general “was the principal voice telling him that Putin was using him.”

The excerpt went on to note a nerve-agent attack in England that targeted former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter, which was easily traced to Moscow.

Just a few days after the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter, a story appeared in the New York Post with the headline “Putin Heaps Praise on Trump, Pans U.S. Politics.” When I walked into the Oval Office that evening, on another matter, the president had a copy of the article and was writing a note to the Russian leader across the page with a fat black Sharpie. He asked me to get the clipping to Putin.

McMaster ignored the directive, and confided to his wife, “After over a year in this job, I cannot understand Putin’s hold on Trump.”

This was not an unfamiliar sentiment. As I noted in my new book , retired Republican Sen. Dan Coats, who served for more than two years as Trump’s director of national intelligence, has said he believes Putin’s government had something on Trump, which left him compromised.

The former president was so acquiescent toward Russia that, in 2018, former CIA director John Brennan also suggested that the Kremlin “may have something on” Trump personally. Brennan added, “The Russians, I think, have had long experience with Mr. Trump, and may have things that they could expose.”

It’s not just Democrats, in other words, who’ve expressed concern about Trump, Putin and Russia. Members of the Republican's own team felt the same way.

The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock), and brick-faced concrete, it was the largest amphitheatre ever built at the time and held 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius). The Colosseum could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various points of its history over the centuries, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles (for only a short time as the hypogeum was soon filled in with mechanisms to support the other activities), animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. Although substantially ruined because of earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is listed as one of the New7Wonders of the World.
