WHAT IS HEATHERS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

Heathers the Musical  based on the 1988 cult hit, that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater,  had its UK premiere in 2018 and  will embark on its third highly anticipated UK and Ireland tour in 2024.

Greetings, salutations. Welcome to Westerberg High, where Veronica Sawyer is just another of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true. Until JD turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody…

Produced by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills, this high octane, black comedy, rock musical based on one of the greatest cult teen films of all-time starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, is back with a bang!

It follows protagonist Veronica Sawyer, who joins a school clique of Heathers – maniacal, primary coloured-blazer-wearing teens all called Heather, until things take a bloodsoaked twist…

Wickedly funny, this is one class production you can't afford to skip.

Couldn’t remember the film from the 80’s so the story seemed fresh to me. Very catchy songs, great costumes and the best slow-mo action I’ve ever seen. Sound dipped occasionally on actors with softer voices. Watched the film the next day and remember Read more

REVIEW: Heathers (UK Tour)

🎟️ Heathers Glasgow tickets HERE

Following two smash hit London seasons and the WhatsOnStage award for BEST NEW MUSICAL, Heathers the Musical UK Tour has arrived in Glasgow for the first time ever this week.

Based on the 1988 cult film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers the musical is a colourful, funny, dark but dazzling glimpse into American high school life.

At Westerberg High, Veronica Sawyer ( Jenna Innes ) is just another nobody dreaming of a better day. But when she joins the beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity may finally come true. Then mysterious teen rebel JD ( Jacob Fowler ) arrives on scene and things take a turn to the dark side...

I had seen Heathers previously, in Edinburgh December 2021 before I started this blog, and I was shocked at how good it was and how much I enjoyed it. I knew it had a cult following in London but I was still surprised. It's wickedly funny, gorgeous to look at, the book is enthralling and the songs are banging! This new 2023 touring production is somehow even better .

From producers Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills , directed by Andy Fickman and choreographed by Gary Lloyd - it's tight, slick, perfectly presented and performed - I can't fault it at all. My heart was racing all night and I had goosebumps at the end.

Every scene and every choreographed step is stunning and serves a purpose. Nothing drags or seems superfluous. The plot moves along at pace, the two acts are carefully balanced and the characters are clear and well defined. The band are brilliant and the cast are outstanding. Wow! It all comes together to make musical theatre magic .

Heathers UK Tour, Jenna Innes, Verity Thompson. Photo credit: Pamela Raith

Front and centre in the lead role of Veronica Sawyer Jenna Innes gave a powerhouse performance as the underdog who joins the untouchable Heathers. Playing to a home crowd, the first tour Scottish Veronica Sawyer brought the house down and I was in tears of pride at both her performance and at the reception she received. (Neither are anything to do with me of course - I just got swept up in the emotion of it all.)

Veronica's strange and secretive love interest, JD is wonderfully played by Since September star Jacob Fowler . The pair have a lovely and obvious chemistry on stage. I want to be in their gang!

Heathers UK Tour Photo credit: Pamela Raith

The Heathers themselves are as glorious as you would expect. With spectacular costumes and striking choreography, their entrance and soon after, their show-stopping number ' Candy Store ' is one of my favourite moments in any musical. Iconic.

Mythic bitch, Queen Heather, The Almighty Heather Chandler is played by newcomer Verity Thompson . I was honestly shocked to read that Verity graduated in 2022. Ok she graduated from Mountview, and is therefore obviously amazing, but she plays Heather C with so much confidence and with perfect diction, with immaculate presentation and flawless delivery - it's glorious! I squealed with delight (inside my head - I am not an annoying audience member!) every time she was on stage.

Heathers UK Tour, Alex Woodward and Morgan Jackson. Photo credit: Pamela Raith

The Heathers, the parents, the teachers, Martha and indeed the whole ensemble cast are great, and most of them play multiple roles. They all work together to deliver an impeccable show and it is honestly a joy to watch. I know it isn't, but they make it look easy! - and that allows the audience to relax and fully enjoy themselves. We are in safe hands!

I must give a special shout out to the boys - The Jocks we love to hate - Kurt and Ram. Expertly played here by Alex Woodward and Morgan Jackson , both have brilliant comic timing and they do a fab job of bringing the delightfully dumb and odious creatures to life. We didn't have jocks at my school in Scotland, but this is exactly how I imagine them to be. Hilarious.

Heathers UK Tour. Photo credit: Pamela Raith

I've already mentioned 'Candy Store', but Heathers soundtrack is full of truly excellent and varied songs. They are all good, and they all fit perfectly into the narrative and ambience of the show. Right from the start with 'Beautiful' the music is engaging and never dull. If I had to pick a favourite, I'd go with ' Dead Girl Walking ' - I have played that song on repeat so many times and I will never tire of it - but 'Never shut up again', Our love is God', 'Seventeen' - no, it's no good, I can't. I like all of the songs. What a soundtrack!

I cannot recommend this production of Heathers enough. I never say this - because I know how expensive and how much of a privilege being able to buy theatre tickets can be - but I'm saying it now: Go! Spend your money, buy the tickets . This show and this cast are absolutely worth your hard-earned coins.

Following a smash hit in London’s West End, two record-breaking national tours and sell out runs at London’s The Other Palace, the WhatsOnStage ‘BEST NEW MUSICAL’ winner, Heathers the Musical is coming to Sheffield.

This high octane, black comedy, rock musical based on one of the greatest cult teen films of all-time that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, is back with a bang!

Welcome to Westerberg High, where popularity is so very a matter of life and death, and Veronica Sawyer is just another of the nobodies dreaming of a better day.

But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.

That is until JD turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but its murder being a somebody.

Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy ’s hit musical adaptation has enjoyed successful runs in Los Angeles and New York, and its European premiere became the highest grossing show at The Other Palace, having sold over 20,000 tickets across the run and selling out prior to its opening gala performance.

She is joined by Keelan McAuley (Clueless; Grease) taking on the mysterious, Jason “J.D” Dean.

Starring as the titular ‘Heathers’ are Esme Bowdler (ITV’s I have a Dream finalist) as the formidable Heather Chandler, Sedona Sky (professional debut) as Heather Duke and Daisy Twells (Heathers) as Heather McNamara.

Heathers the Musical wows Newcastle with fabulously dark comedy, teen angst and a brilliant cast

Fans of musical theatre are in for an absolute treat with the spectacular production of Heathers the Musical, with audiences at Newcastle Theatre Royal ecstatic in their applause and quite rightly for a thrilling performance on opening night.

And all those young women who turned out in their Heathers outfits on a balmy Newcastle evening just looked perfect and boy did they enjoy themselves along with those of us who weren’t in tartan socks.

The film Heathers hit cinemas in 1988 and it was a sensation, I know because I must have gone to the cinema five times to see it.

The current musical is based on the cult teen film which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater (my main reason for seeing it five times).

The plot revolves around the school Westerberg High, where our protagonist Veronica Sawyer is an unassuming pupil who dreams of escaping high school. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.

That is until the mysterious teenage boy J.D. turns up and the real trouble starts - he’s a dangerous psychopath with murderous tendencies so chaos follows.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or how such a favourite film could be transferred onto the stage but I couldn’t have been more astounded. Produced by Bill Kenwright Ltd and Paul Taylor-Mills, this dark comedy is just fantastic.

heathers musical tour uk

Playing Veronica is Jenna Innes who is already winning awards and it’s no surprise she was just magnificent in her role and sings beautifully.

J.D. Dean is played by Keelan Mcauley who delivers a very accomplished performance swirling around in his long black trenchcoat.

The Heathers are full of venom and spite in ascending order of course. Queen Bee Heather Chandler is played with great aplomb by Esme Bowdler (she almost steals the show).

There were splendid performances from Sedona Sky, our local girl, who plays Heather Duke and Daisy Twells who plays Heather McNamara.

Despite their unlikable and misogynistic characters, amazing comic relief came from Kurt Kelly (Ivan Fernandez Gonzalez) and Ram (Jason Battersby) who are a marvellous double act.

Amy Mile’s performance of Kindergarten Boyfriend as Martha gave me goosebumps too.

heathers musical tour uk

This musical is at its best when it goes to extremes, such as when Heather Chandler haunts Veronica after she is killed off. Kelly and Ram follow her around once they join the afterlife too.

As a whole, the musical is very entertaining with wonderful sets, and costumes. The exceptional production at Newcastle Theatre Royal also features a brilliant ensemble.

The show which was first performed in 2018 has a legion of fans judging by all the tartan socks, blazers and scrunchies sported by the audience and the huge queues for merchandise on the ground floor of the theatre last night.

And the soundtrack for the musical must be at cult status and teens around me mouthed the song's word for word.

The standing ovations were completely deserved so if you want to watch something a little different on the boards, Heathers The Musical is for you.

At the Theatre Royal until September 7. Tickets from the box office on 0191 232 7010 or the Theatre Royal website www.theatreroyal.co.uk

Story of the Week: Why Is Heathers Coming Back?

After a decade across the pond, the dark musical comedy plans to return Stateside — but will it be a hit this time?

Zachary Stewart

heathers musical tour uk

Earlier this week we reported that a New York revival of Heathers: The Musical seems to be in the works , with an anticipated 2025 opening. Story of the Week will jog our readers’ memories about this cult musical, track its incredible journey across the Atlantic, and answer the crucial question: Why now?

But first, the basics…

What is Heathers: The Musical ?

Heathers is based on the 1989 film by screenwriter Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann about an Ohio high school and the three young women (all named Heather) who rule over its fragile social ecosystem. It’s also about a psychotic newcomer named J.D. determined to blow it all up by enlisting the sweet but increasingly wayward Veronica Sawyer as his accomplice. It’s like a John Hughes movie rewritten by the Marquis de Sade.

I have described the original film as “the jaded older sister of Mean Girls, ” although I have not praised the musical (written by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, with direction by Andy Fickman) in similar terms (more on that later).

Heathers debuted at LA’s Hudson Backstage Theatre in 2013 before playing a respectable yet brief off-Broadway run in 2014. Since then, Mean Girls has come and gone on Broadway, with a new film adaptation released earlier this year . Sunnier and more amenable to 21 st -century sensibilities around identity and self-harm, Mean Girls is clearly the more successful of the two musicals — at least in the United States.

Where has Heathers played since its off-Broadway run?

In the grand tradition of misunderstood Americans, Heathers has been living its best life across the pond. Multiple runs have taken place at the Other Palace in London (2018, 2022-23), the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket (2018, 2021), and the West End’s @sohoplace (2024). It won the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best Musical. There was also a major tour of the UK and Ireland in 2023. A professional film capture was taken in 2022, which can currently be streamed on Roku .

Production costs in the UK are generally lower than in the United States, which certainly helped facilitate the many returns of Heathers . “The whole thing is played out on a unit set that might charitably be described as economical,” wrote WhatsOnStage critic Alun Hood about the 2021 West End production . He also praised the “marvelous lead performances, the energy of the ensemble, and the pervading sardonic wit,” which count for so much more than expensive scenery.

Most importantly, multiple runs have served to develop a loyal fan base that producers are surely hoping will undergird ticket sales in New York. Lead producer Paul Taylor-Mills was perhaps spinning too dizzily when he told WhatsOnStage , “The first night at the Haymarket was like One Direction had re-formed, actually let’s go with the Spice Girls…” But it is undeniable that the ranks of “corn nuts” (the affectionate term for superfans of Heathers ) grow with each performance and every online stream of the cast recording.

heathers musical tour uk

Is it all about the cast recording?

Heathers has spawned not one cast recording , but two , allowing die-hard fans to hear how the show has evolved on its transatlantic passage. As I’ve written about Lempicka and its likely journey through the wilderness, cast recordings extend the life of a musical, allowing the property to build an audience over the course of decades. They also give listeners, even those who were present in the theater, an opportunity to really hear the lyrics.

One of my great misgivings about reviewing new musicals is the fact that no human can process and internalize an entire musical score in one sitting. Important lyrics will be missed (a problem exacerbated by sound balance issues ) and melodies will go in one ear and out the other — but this doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad songs! Realistically, if you can get an audience to remember two or three tunes, you’ve succeeded.

A defensive critic might retort, “A musical is a property for the stage and if the composer cannot convey all of her ideas in that venue, she has failed.” But this doesn’t account for the reality that in the digital age, people regularly discover musicals outside of the theater — and this is a perfectly valid way to enjoy at least an element of an art form that comprises many parts.

If you weren’t crazy about Heathers in 2014, why would 2025 be any different?

I was dismissive of Heathers in my 2014 review , arguing that the musical had blunted the film’s edge. But having recently listened to both cast recordings, I realize I missed a lot of what made Heathers a cleverly prescient musical that has attracted a legion of young fans.

The song “Freeze Your Brain” paints an especially vivid portrait of J.D., a young man unmoored from community, whose only comfort is found in the icy embrace of a 7-Eleven slushie, its numbing sensation less powerful (yet more delicious) than Fentanyl. He sings, “I learned to cook pasta / I learned to pay rent / Learned the world doesn’t owe you a cent.” In many ways, he is the ideal American consumer — and that has turned him into a psychopath.

The full extent of his apocalyptic malice is revealed in the number “Our Love Is God,” in which he convinces Veronica to join him in committing double murder. He sings, “We’ll burn it down and then / We’ll build the world again,” describing himself and his partner-in-crime as “the asteroid that’s overdue.” Here, J.D. emerges as an archetype that we have come to know well from a succession of school shootings and a recent assassination attempt: the nihilistic young man who believes the world can only be cleansed by fire. It is not lost on me that he shares a name with a Vice Presidential candidate who has made his career talking about depressed American communities and the scourge of globalized liberalism, and who exhibits similarly accelerationist tendencies .

Murphy and O’Keefe smartly chase this terrifying song with “My Dead Gay Son,” a rollicking production number that lampoons the identity politics that have come to serve as a Band-Aid (but are more often an irritant) on a much deeper, ever-festering wound. Is this something that New York audiences are finally ready to confront and maybe even laugh about?

When Heathers appeared off-Broadway in 2014, America was just ramping up into a social media-fueled culture of censoriousness that reached its shrill zenith in 2020 (call it “woke” if you must). That means, of course, that the party was already in full swing in New York, which prides itself on being ahead of the curve for even the most irritating trends. It absolutely wasn’t the best environment for a musical like Heathers , which pushes boundaries and revels in taboo.

But 2024 is a different environment, with audiences more receptive to work that challenges orthodoxies, especially in a humorous way. If the overwhelming successes of Teeth and Oh, Mary! have taught us anything, it’s that New York audiences are hungry to laugh at all the things they’re not supposed to laugh at. They will absolutely open their wallets for producers willing to put artfully constructed transgression onstage. So now is the time for Heathers to fuck the theater gently with a chainsaw.
