X never gets old. Even though soon the audience will all be in wheelchairs. John Doe and DJ Bonebreak simply do not tire. Exene hasn't been at full steam for years, but she manages to pull it off anyhow with swagger. Heart goes out to Billy Zoon, who is recovering — we all hope — from cancer treatment. Exene wore a "support Billy Zoom" t-shirt, which they were also selling. I hope they're raising enough. Several years ago when X last performed in Detroit, Exene was already raising the issue of under insured musicians, and she and the band have long supported Sweet Relief, an organization founded 20+ yrs ago to address the issue. (She herself had been diagnosed with MS.) Would have liked to ask her if the ACA has made a difference.

Jesse Dayton stepped in on lead guitar with aplomb. However, I missed the cheeseball Zoom, who plays so effortlessly that he spends the whole set making eyes at the audience. But because Zoom wasn't there, I paid more attention to DJ Bonebreak (not a stage name!), who really has a similar presence. Doesn't miss a beat with a ton of flair.

I was thrilled that they played Blue Spark by request. AFAIK that song hasn't been in regular rotation for years, so it was great that they could pull it off with Jesse.

Before their set, introduced as the Staple Sisters,

they joined Dead Rock West to perform a song called "this may be the last time." That felt true. But who knows. I've thought that every time I've seen X since they began their perpetual reunion almost 20 years ago.

I survived my childhood and teen years by listening to X, so when I saw that they were playing again, I knew there was no way in hell I was going to miss their show. They played at The Casbah, a small divey bar in San Diego, and they rocked out, cooler than ever. Billy played his sax on a couple of songs and was awesome. They played their older songs, which I was happy about.

There were a few older douche bag white men who attended, who started pushing me around. I guess, they were trying to mosh, but it was lame. Really? How old are we now? Have we not evolved from that? Maybe not. One guy got kicked out for being too aggressive, and at one point John admonished a couple of idiots who were starting to fight saying that it ruined the song for him, "really guys, are you serious?" Luckily, there were enough gentlemen and others who just wanted to enjoy the music so that the show was not ruined.

X is a quintessential Los Angeles punk band who should not be missed. They are energetic and tight and still have their punk rock souls going on.

In a musical climate where it can often feel as if it’s a race to the bottom in terms of who can come up with the silliest band name, it’s refreshing to cast your mind back to a time where the likes of X were happy to go minimalist on that front, and let their music do the talking for them. Forming in 1977 - the same year that punk was born - you can argue that the LA group are among the forefathers of the genre, with their first two albums ranked amongst the greatest 500 ever by Rolling Stone back in 2003. Their heady reputation is down in no small part to their live shows, which continue to this day; there’s little in the way of rock and roll fireworks t the light show or the stage set, but they don’t really need it when they have a stage presence as commanding as that exuded by frontwoman Exene Cervenka. Her health problems in recent years have forced less touring, but both her voice and her sheer aura remain as potent as ever when they do play; this is a band sure to go down as icons of their genre in years to come.

Great show! They covered way more than just the Los Angeles album. They were in fine form and seemed to be really be having fun. Awesome hearing/seeing DJ Bonebreak playing vibes and Billy Zoom on sax Come Back To Me off of Under The Big Black Sun. Overall a badass show, Folk Yuke was a perfect opening band choice. I do miss the old school days when a little extra time and effort hanging after the show would net you a chance to say howdy or get an autograph. Unfortunately that's all been monetized and exclusive to VIP package deal holders. Great for those that can afford it but kindal sucky for real fans. The lat time I saw Excene in San Antonio was a solo show at a shithole club on Avenue E on October 8th, 2011. There were maybe 25-30 people there including staff. Obviously that scene was much less pretentious and she more accessible. In fact she was working her own merch table after the show. X still bring it, if you get a chance catch them on this tour.

Conceptually, playing the classic 4 albums over 2 nights made a lot of sense.

But the sound was dreadful. Having just seen the Decemberists there, the sound can mix well at the Observatory North Park.

John Doe's driving bass line was missing in Hungry Wolf. Although the mix was better the first night (larger crowd), it was a terrible start to their second night. At no point did their sound person ever bring the bass up enough to hear without focus.

The ~40 minute run times of their albums made for two short shows. But on night two, with the sound so dreadful, I wanted to hear the cuts they rarely play and get out.

This probably will be the last time I spend my money on X.

So often, when seeing bands of the X era (or before), you assume that you'll be watching an energy-less show of aging rockers with declining skills & diminished vocals. I am so happy to report that X can still bring it!

Night 3 ("Under the Big Black Sun") of a 4 night run at the Observatory was so incredible that I went back for the final show ("More Fun in the New World"). The band's sound was cohesive and strong, Billy Zoom's mastery of the guitar was really showcased on night 4, Exene's vocals were as beautiful as ever, and kudos to Doe for chastising the guy in the crowd for messing with his smartphone during the set.

Brilliant stuff - thoughts and prayers to Billy on a speedy recovery!

X was phenomenal! They were in rare form at the Casbah. Soundcheck was great although it was a little short. Being able to see them at 100.7 origin show beforehand was great! Small intimate venue with a fear of being in the living room having a conversation with the band. After sound check while waiting for the small wigs to play Xcene and John Doe came out and talk to the crowd hung out signed autographs I was really kind of nice. At the VIP soundcheck everyone got a great bag of swag. It was one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen. Great crowd great warm-up band great performance by X.

40 years of punk rock. Most of their contemporaries are dead or have quit music, but X shows why they are still a viable force. Yeah, they only play old songs because Billy won't play anything he didn't play on originally—but tonight they showed some new arrangements, which I loved. X was always deeper than "loud & fast rules" which is why I think they outlasted the others. The Cat's cradle was packed with oldsters and plenty of younger folks too-- a great sweaty rock show.

Was hopefull it would be good show, but these guys are old like me.

It was fantastic. They rocked hard and fast. They played exclusively from their first 4 albums. Those were their best.

But I would have liked to hear some of their older stuff too. They had the time as they didn't even play for 1.5 hours.

But that's not picking.

Venue was great too.

Great show and venue. Hard to believe they have been together for so long. Great energy and they appeared to still have a good time performing. Opening act was Jane from GoGo's. Her band was great but cannot remember their name. She sounded great and would also see them again.

Critics and fans seem to agree with her. Responses to Smoke & Fiction have been overwhelmingly positive; the album even hit the top 10 of Billboard ’s Top Album Sales chart, marking their best showing ever on that tally.

“We did three days at Sunset Sound, which is a great studio,” says Doe, speaking in front of a mishmash of drawings, paintings, photos and books from his house in Austin. “Like a lot of what I think are good rock n’ roll records, it was made in less than a month — three weeks, maybe.”

Below, the band takes Billboard through their decision to make Smoke & Fiction their final album/tour, what their creative process is like these days (Cervenka periodically jots down words in a notebook during our conversation) and what they think about the changing musical landscape of L.A.

2020’s Alphabetland was the first X album in decades, but you couldn’t tour behind it because of the pandemic. Is that part of what made you want to do another one?

Doe : I have a little different story. I remember maybe November of 2022, I heard from somebody, maybe our manager, “You know, we’re making a record.” And I said, “Huh. I figured I would be in on that.” My head was twisting back and forth like a like a cockatoo or something. Anyway, I said, “Cool, let’s do it,” and Exene and I got to work. The real luxury is that we played four or five of the songs all year in 2023, so going into the studio in January this year was quick. We got it done.

So some of these songs you road-tested, but for the other ones, how long did it take you to write them?

Cervenka : Well, there isn’t like a starting and an ending point. Some of the lyrics of the songs I wrote a really long time ago, like 15 years ago or longer, and some of them I wrote in the studio. You just constantly write and constantly come up with musical ideas and keep touring and coming up with arrangement ideas on the fly. Then you practice.

Doe : As Exene said, the first single and video, “Big Black X,” that was written in the studio, which is uncharacteristic for us. It was uncharacteristic to write it in the studio, because we don’t like to take a stack of money and set it on fire. Some people love that, but I don’t. Some of the situations that prompted the stories [on the album] are from 30-40 years ago.

I did want to ask about “Big Black X,” because there are some interesting lyrics in there – you mention hanging out at Errol Flynn’s rundown mansion back in the day. Was there a particular memory or experience that made you want to include that in a song?

Doe : The song started as a as a prose piece that Exene wrote a couple of pages of, and we didn’t want to repeat ourselves by having a spoken word piece at the end of the record, like we did on Alphabetland with “All the Time in the World.” I just really loved it and thought it would make a great song. And at that point it seemed clear that this could be our last record, just because it was reflective, a lot of the lyrics. So we started putting it into a lyrical form, and [at first] we had different music that was kind of epic stadium [rock]. And I hate – well, I don’t hate it — I don’t do stadium rock very well. The lyrics were sort of strident, like, “We knew the future and also the gutter.” It’s like, we didn’t know the future. We knew the gutter. So we switched that around. It turned out that we had an inkling; the future caught up to what we might have envisioned, as far as punk rock coming to the masses, or punk rock being still being an underground, but there’s a lot of pretty popular bands now that are definitely influenced by punk rock.

Do you think there’s still an L.A. punk scene? Or do you think it’s the city has just changed too much to foster a creative music culture?

Doe : I’m sure there’s a bunch of punk rock bands that live and play in L.A.

Cervenka : Oh, for sure, but that’s not the same thing.

Doe : It’s just a different version. L.A.’s got enough people that it’s always going to have a number of really vital rock n’ roll-based music scenes.

Certainly cities like L.A. and New York have gotten much more expensive.

Cervenka : The cities are not what they used to be. Let’s just put it that way.

Has technology changed how you write songs or make records?

Cervenka : That’s how I make records, right here [holds up her notebook and several pens]. I do not use any technology to make a record, except I might sing a song in the phone to John. We do have to email each other.

Doe : I send voice memos to the band of bass and me singing. They listen to it probably once or twice, and then we get to the rehearsal studio and figure it out. I don’t know how much good that does. It changes a lot. But bass is a terrific tool for writing songs because it leaves a lot of space for people.

When you’re working on these songs, do you hem and haw over them, second guessing yourself?

Doe : Yeah, your brain is not your friend, especially in recording. You just have to be intuitive and feel it from your heart and your chest and know somehow what’s right. But that’s hard.

How do you decide who sings what vocal parts?

Doe : I think it’s determined by the lyrics, whoever wrote the majority of the lyrics, and then you just trial-and-error work it out.

Cervenka : Yeah, I think that the songs I sing are the ones that wrote the majority of the lyrics, and the ones that John sings are the ones he wrote the lyrics. But that’s not always the case.

Cervenka : I think it also depends on what the key the song is in. There’s certain songs that I’m not going to sing because it’s a lower note.

John : Fun fact: “Flip Side” was written in a different key, but I wanted Exene to be the lead, and I would sing harmony. I’d sing around her, so we moved the key up. And same thing with “The Struggle Is Surreal.”

I know X hasn’t been active all these years, but your debut came out 44 years ago and you started playing a few years before that. Does it feel like that long to you – almost a half century?

Cervenka : I don’t know what that feels like. I think that I just try to stay in the moment. I don’t know. I don’t know anything about time. I guess it does. I guess it doesn’t. I don’t know.

Doe : Since it’s the only thing that I’ve done for almost 50 years, I would say it feels exactly like that. But there’s all this other life that goes around around that. We played a show outside in Chicago, and it was a total sweat fest. It was hot and humid, and toward the end of the show, I said, “I don’t know if I feel like I’m 25 or 85” because I kind of felt like both, just jumping around and playing this punk rock show. But I mean, even when I was 25, if you play hard and you really give it your all — which we do — you’re exhausted.

One thing we hear a lot from artists is how difficult the touring market is these days. As you do this tour, have you found that to be the case?

Doe : We’re incredibly fortunate because we have this history. We have a very loyal fan base. It’s a sweet spot for us: people either say, “You changed my life” or “you saved my life” or “I don’t know who you are.” So the people that know us and have seen us, they know that we put on a good show, and they’re very dedicated.

I saw you back in the late ‘00s and it absolutely knocked me out. I still think about it. Very excited to check out your New York show.

Doe : We’re playing the fancy place: [Manhattan’s] Town Hall. Which is funny, because I used to get pretty freaked out about playing sit-down venues. And now, since we’ve done it enough, it’s not so bad. I mean, I like to sit down. I don’t necessarily like standing for an entire show.

It is a lot. But it can be awkward. I saw a show at Radio City – which is a fancy, sit-down venue – that Jack White played, and he kind of yelled at the audience for not standing. But it can be hard to stand when the seats are so close together.

Doe : That’s just f–king stupid. [laughs] You don’t berate the audience. If you’re playing a quiet song, you don’t yell at the audience to shut up — either they’re interested enough to listen to what you’re doing, or they’re motivated enough to stand up and do it. Oh well. We all make mistakes.

It’s true, we all make mistakes. And his new record is amazing. So this is billed as your final album and tour. Of course, we’ve heard that from a lot of bands who then return to do more tours. Is there a chance of that?

Doe : And we might just do a residency. We’ll find like a Bowery Ballroom and we’ll have 20 dates instead of 80.

Cervenka : Maybe. We don’t know.

So it’s not the end of the band, but you’re done with the schlepping around and staying in sh-tty hotels.

Cervenka : Hope so.

What is your day-to-day like? When you’re not music-making, what are you doing with your time?

Cervenka : Well, I have a very old dog that I adopted from a friend who could no longer care for her, and she’s blind, and she needs a lot of care. So I take care of her. I do housework, yard work, laundry, cooking, you know, just all the things normal people do all day. Just the crap of life. I don’t have a very exciting life. I do make art, and I do have friends, but I don’t really go out much. And I like having a quiet life. I live alone. I like that. And I’m pretty reflective. I have some little creative projects. But basically, since I don’t have to do anything when I have time off, I try not to, because I’m so busy when we’re working. I’m not one of those people that goes crazy unless they have a project in front of me. I’m not on the phone all the time trying to book the next thing that I want to do. I just hang out at home.

Doe : I try to be creative. I agree that it is project-driven, but I do have a monthly poetry workshop that I get on a Zoom call with six or seven people that I know. And pretty much every day, I go visit my horse and ride and take care of her. My wife and I go out on occasion. We saw a great movie about the making of Fitzcarraldo .

Was that Burden of Dreams ? I love that one.

I’ll go to a record store. I try to stay current with some of the some new records. I like the new Iron & Wine record. It’s really good. There’s a couple songs that he obviously listened to Nick Drake a lot, but that’s cool, because he’s so talented. Sunny War’s new record I like a lot. And Skating Polly is a band that Exene brought to our attention. Actually, I just watched a couple videos of a band from Baltimore called Angel Du$t.They’re pretty f–king insane. Very Henry Rollins, Black Flag influenced. There was this one song where he said, “All right, all the women have to come up and sing a verse.” And all these young girls were just getting up and diving off stage. In this three-minute, two-minute song, there were probably 10 different people. It was great.

Maybe you should do that on your tour.

Cervenka : I don’t like to divide people by their imaginary genders.

FOUR decades after the inception of X, one thing is clear: X was not only one of the most influential bands to crash out of the punk movement of the late ‘70s, but their music continues to be sonically groundbreaking. Songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977.

“I remember one night at the Masque, saying to myself at the age of 22… I just paused for a moment in the middle of my drinking and thought, ‘This is an amazing thing, you’re really lucky to be here right now.’ I realized in that moment how special it all was.”

–Exene Cervenka, Jan. 2008

“Four decades after the inception of X, one thing is clear: X was not only one of the most influential bands to crash out of the punk movement of the late ‘70s, but the band’s music continues to be sonically groundbreaking today. Songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977.

x on tour

The fact is, no one sounds like X and no one ever will.

It’s not surprising when you consider the group’s unique beginnings, which can only be attributed to fate. On the same day with nearly the exact same wording, two want-ads appear in a local music rag. One was sent in by a guitarist named Billy Zoom, the other by bassist who called himself John Doe.

Zoom, a rockabilly rebel who’d performed with Gene Vincent, had read a negative review of a band called the Ramones. It said they only played three chords and they played ‘em too fast. So naturally, he went to see them. The show was at the Golden West Ballroom in the L.A. suburb of Norwalk in early ’77, and as soon as the Ramones started to perform, Zoom realized that, musically, he’d found exactly what he wanted to do with his life.

Doe, who was originally from the Baltimore area, was already down with the East Coast CBGB’s scene and by the time the two got in the same room together after responding to each other’s ads, it seemed it was meant to be. They performed a few shows with various drummers before a poet with no ambition of being a singer would enter the picture.

Doe found her in Venice Beach, at a poetry reading. He liked her poems so much he offered to perform them in his band. The poet, Exene Cervenka, had just moved to town from Florida and she told him, no offense, but if anyone was gonna perform her poems, it would be her, and she soon ended up in the band. Zoom was skeptical about someone’s girlfriend being in the band. After they did their first show with Exene, he didn’t know exactly what it was she had, but he knew it was magic.

After a succession of drummers, Doe was at the underground punk club the Masque in Hollywood one night, checking out a band called the Eyes, which featured a pre-Go-Go’s bass player named Charlotte Caffey. He called Zoom immediately and said he’d found their drummer. Doe told him he played with a parade snare and hit it hard as a hammer. Zoom told him to promise him anything. His name was D.J. Bonebrake and he quickly signed on. The band was now complete, and X would soon emerge from the young punk scene as one of its most successful offspring.

The band’s early albums, Los Angeles (1980), produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, Wild Gift (1981), and Under the Big Black Sun (1982) explored dark love and an even darker L.A. with the unflinching eye of a Raymond Chandler novel. Doe and Cervenka would marry and later divorce, but they’d always remain soulmates. As they released each ensuing album, More Fun in theNew World(1983) and Ain’t Love Grand (1985), the band continued to grow sonically and politically, fearlessly mixing genres without ever losing its center. As each member went on to explore diverse careers—careers that included acting, art, writing, producing and multiple side projects.”

x on tour

In late 1997— The original members of X came together for the first time in 12 years for a record signing at Tower Records Hollywood. The amazing response from fans led to the band agreeing to play two shows -one at the Trocadero in San Francisco and one at the Palladium in Hollywood in early 1998. Both shows quickly sold out & the Trocadero added a 2nd show.

“… we asked each member to weigh in on the band’s past and present and to explain just how exactly they’ve managed to keep the fire inside..."

Q. What can X fans expect on tour?

Exene Cervenka: It’s the best time for X right now. Everyone’s really open-minded, and we’ve stuck it out so long. We’re just gonna keep doing it, and we’re never gonna be able to stop.

D.J. Bonebrake: All I can say is the band sounds better now than it did 30 years ago. We’re a tighter band, because of all our experience and we have a lot of energy. Exene’s a better singer than ever before and John sounds amazing. Billy’s in a really good place. Everyone’s in a positive mood, and you can hear it when we’re on stage.

John Doe: We certainly haven’t lost much, and it’s really inspiring to see an enthusiastic young audience. It has to do with being a part of something that’s real and not virtual. We feel like the last gunslingers.

Billy Zoom: We’re working up some more X songs that we haven’t played in years. The whole thing seems very energized, and I’m particularly excited because I’ll get a chance to play the new Gretsch Billy Zoom tribute model guitar.

Q. It’s amazing it’s been 34 years. So few bands perform with original members and so many people have been lost over the years. How has X managed to keep it together over three decades?

DJ: It really takes a financial incentive (he laughs). The truth is, it’s much more romantic when you die, but we’re the kind of people who just wanna hang out and make more music.

John: I think we managed over three decades the same way we managed over the first five years: Simply by determination, a certain amount of creativity and some ambition. There were many bands from (the Hollywood punk club) the Masque and from New York and England, and they’d go through the first wave of the first three years, and they’re not satisfied with what they got and they quit. We didn’t. A lot of it has to do with the people coming to see us.

Billy and Exene: Blind luck.

Q. How have you maintained a love for the music?

John: It’s not something you really have to maintain. It just is, it exists. And once you begin playing it, you have to give it your all. I really thrive on performing. That’s why I play in three bands, and I’m working all the time. Singing is a good thing.

Billy: We have a very loyal fan base that loves our music. They help keep the passion alive.

Exene: You have to love the songs. I wouldn’t play it if I didn’t love it—the money’s not that good. X is the songs. John wrote a lot of the words and came up with the melodies. He’s a genius. They’re great songs. I love singing them every night.

DJ: The thing about being a musician is you need to keep yourself interested. I’m always practicing, playing multiple instruments and different styles, vibes, marimba, salsa bands, a Latin jazz band, a ‘30s band. When I go back and play with X, I hear things differently, and I think it’s made me a better musician.

Q. What’s the best part of hitting that stage with a band you must still love?

Billy: Meeting the audience. I think they put on a much better show than we do.

Exene: You don’t know what to expect at that moment. It’s always magic.

DJ: You look at the crowd and think, ‘Do they like us? Do they still care?’ I won’t lie and say I don’t care if there’s anyone out there. Luckily, there are usually people out there and I prepare for it, mentally and physically, like a marathon runner. People think punk rock is a simple music, but as far as I’m concerned, not everyone can do it. It’s hard to play it right. I put so much work into making it right. Sometimes an hour before, I wonder how the hell I’m gonna go out and do this crazy thing. It’s so surreal.

Q. Any secrets to a long-term career?

Billy: The secret to a long-term career is to never make enough to retire.

John: Just don’t quit.

Q. When you guys set out in 1977, did you realize you were creating music that would stand the test of the time?

John: We knew we were part of something that was gonna have an impact, whether it was five years or twenty years, we didn’t know and we didn’t really care. When we started selling out shows at the Whisky, I knew we’d arrived at something. But you’re too busy just doing what you’re doing to think, ‘I’m hot shit.’ Maybe if you’re selling out arenas, you’re holding up your pants and going, ‘Holy fuck.’ But we were just hoping to get through the first six months.

x on tour

Exene: We didn’t have any idea about the future. We were so in the moment, we didn’t think past 1980. I remember one night at the Masque, saying to myself at the age of 22… I just paused for a moment in the middle of my drinking and thought, ‘This is an amazing thing, you’re really lucky to be here right now.’ I realized in that moment how special it all was. It was hard because we were so successful in it. We were able to tour, it was mind blowing. Nobody was planning on a career. It was just a bunch of misfits who didn’t know what they were doing, playing music and inventing fashion. People would pull over on the side of the road and flip you off. You knew that it was important because people were fighting it.

Q. You really pushed the fashion of the scene. Where did you find your influences?

Exene: I just invented it when I was in Florida. I brought all this stuff with me from Florida, both physically and mentally, but no one beats me up for it anymore so it’s kind of weird.

Q. When you look back at old photos, what do you think?

John: I don’t.

Billy: I was so thin!

DJ: We were so young.

Exene: I can’t believe I thought I was so plain looking. We were lucky to be around so many good photographers.

Q. As you look back over three decades of X, is there anything you would’ve done differently?

Billy: Sold more records.

John: I don’t know what we could’ve done differently… I think X was a classic not-ready-for-primetime. And the way we do it, the way we write songs, I don’t think we ever will be.

Exene: I would do everything differently. I wouldn’t have changed the scene I was in, but I would have done a better job and goofed off less, been more conscientious. Although, the truth is, I think it’s supposed to be a long strange trip or you’re doing something wrong.

X announce final album and farewell tour

The Los Angeles punk stalwarts will release 'Smoke & Fiction' later this year

X have announced they will be disbanding following a farewell tour and the release of their final record ‘Smoke & Fiction’ later this year.

The announcement follows a cryptic post on the band’s Instagram earlier in the month, which showed a billboard on Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard that read ‘The End Is Near’. The billboard included a phone number that the band encouraged fans to call and leave a message.

It also follows their announcement yesterday, (June 26) where the band confirmed that their ninth album ‘Smoke & Fiction’ will be their last. The record will be released on August 2 via Fat Possum.

Alongside the announcement, X shared a new single ‘Big Black X’ – check out the single and the tracklist for ‘Smoke & Fiction’ below:

The ‘Smoke & Fiction’ tracklist is:

1. ‘Ruby Church’ 2. ‘Sweet Til the Bitter End’ 3. ‘The Way It Is’ 4.  ‘Flipside’ 5. ‘Big Black X’ 6. ‘Smoke & Fiction’ 7. ‘Struggle’ 8. ‘Winding Up the Time’ 9. ‘Face in the Moon’ 10. ‘Baby & All’

The Los Angeles post-punk band’s departure comes only four years after their 2020 reunion, which saw the original line-up – comprised of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake – reunite for the album ‘Alphabetland’.

The record marked the first time the four musicians had collaborated since 1993, and was produced by Rob Schnapf — most famous for working with the late Elliot Smith .

X will embark on a farewell tour of the US, beginning on July 6 in Kansas City, Missouri, before wrapping up on October 30 in Columbia, South Carolina. Tickets are available here .

X’s 2024 farewell tour dates are:

JULY 6 — Uptown Theatre, Kansas City, MO 9 — Delmare Hall, Saint Louis, MO 12 — Varsity Theatre, Minneapolis, MN 16 — Cathedral Theatre at the Masonic Temple, Detroit, MI 19 — Vogue Theatre, Indianapolis, IN 25 — The Regent Theater, Los Angeles, CA 26 — The Regent Theater, Los Angeles, CA 28 — Pacific Amphitheatre, Costa Mesa, CA

OCTOBER 21 — White Oak Music Hall – Downstairs, Houston, TX 24 — Minglewood Hall, Memphis, TN 25 — Brooklyn Bowl Nashville, Nashville, TN 26 — Iron City, Birmingham, AL 30 — The Senate, Columbia, SC

Speaking on their surprise comeback to  NME in 2020 , Doe said: “[Cervenka] and I talked about writing some songs five to seven years ago together, but we weren’t sure where it would go.” Doe and Cervenka are long-time writing partners and were married between 1980 and 1985. “We were doing other creative stuff, and whatever creative force you have goes into whatever’s in place, right? Whether it’s building a car, making a garden or writing a song,” he said.

Cervenka, however, had her own version of events, saying: “Actually, I’ve been writing X songs for 10 years, and finally everybody decided to make a record. That’s the real story.” In 2009, Cervenka was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis , but she has continued to write music and tour.

In 2021, Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl joined forces with his daughter Violet to cover ‘Nausea’, a seminal track from X’s 1980 debut album ‘Los Angeles’. Grohl was inspired to take on the song after discovering he may be related to X drummer Bonebrake.

The revelation came following Nirvana’s 1992 world tour, when Grohl came home to find a letter from his grandmother. “I found it a bit peculiar that my not-so punk rock 83-year-old grandmother would pay any attention to X’s tour stop, but upon further inspection I noticed that she had circled the name of one of the band members in the article, DJ Bonebrake, and I quickly realised why this article had caught her attention,” wrote Grohl. “Bonebrake was my grandmother’s maiden name.”

Grohl and Bonebrake eventually met at a Foo Fighters show in 2007. “Long discussions of distant relatives and our historic family tree ensued, and by the end of the night we parted ways feeling a bit more connected to the linenage that bought us to this place,” said Grohl.

X Announce Final Album And Tour

Los Angeles punk veterans X are calling it quits. Today (June 25), the band announced plans to release their final album, Smoke & Fiction , on Aug. 2 through Fat Possum Records, as well as their last tour.

Smoke & Fiction was produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Foo Fighters). First single “Big Black X” takes stock of the band’s 47-year career, looking back at how things have changed for them and the city where they formed. The accompanying video was directed by Gilbert Trejo and Shane McKenzie, who said it was “inspired by ’80s video art and the great punk documentaries of the time / shot on VHS, edited tape to tape, using Polaroids + 35mm photos, smashed together with analog video mixers and CRT televisions / it’s a tornado of the past and present – Ed Colver’s photos were a blast to video mix and they are the glue holding it all together.”

Exene Cervenka, John Doe, D.J. Bonebrake and Billy Zoom have been touring on and off already this year, including shows in Long Beach, Ca., last Friday, and last night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, but the ongoing itinerary will be their last as a band. The group will also play Little Steven’s Underground Garage cruise next May.

X’s previous album, Alphabetland , was released in 2020 and was also produced by Schnapf. It was their first with original guitarist Zoom since 1985 and the long-awaited follow-up to 1993’s Hey Zeus!

“We’re not big thinkers; we trust our intuition,” Doe told SPIN at the time. “We didn’t have a theme or have a grand plan. We just wanted to make songs.”

Los Angeles punk legends X have announced Smoke & Fiction , which they say will be their final album. The band’s original lineup – John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom – recorded the album with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Foo Fighters). It will be out August 2 via Fat Possum Records , and X will then embark on a farewell tour of North America. Listen to the first single, ‘Big Black X’, and check out the list of dates below.

“X is a great band name; also a bad idea sometimes when it gets lost in print or on the marquee,” Cervenka remarked in a statement. “Gotta have a sense of humor. We all did in the early days. Los Angeles was a carnival of weirdness back then, with left over traces of silent movie stars, long haired hippies, bikers, and brand new self-defined punks doing anything we wanted. When we started touring the country we found like-minded people everywhere, and somehow they all found us. Even if the X was lost on the old marquee.”

‘Big Black X’ comes with an accompanying video directed by Gilbert Trejo and Shane McKenzie, who said: “Inspired by 80s video art and the great punk documentaries of the time / shot on VHS, edited tape to tape, using Polaroids + 35mm photos, smashed together with analog video mixers and CRT televisions / it’s a tornado of the past and present – Ed Colver’s photos were a blast to video mix and they are the glue holding it all together.”

Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in the first wave of LA's flourishing punk scene; becoming legendary leaders of a punk generation. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978, followed by seven studio albums released from 1980-1993.

Los Angeles (1980), Wild Gift (1981), Under The Big Black Sun (1982) and More Fun In The New World (1983). In 2020, X celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Los Angeles and celebrated with a surprise release of Alphabetland, their first new studio album, featuring the original line-up, in 35 years.

At least 40 pints of the limited edition "Kamala's Coconut Jubilee" will be given away in an online raffle as part of the "Scoop the Vote" tour organized by MoveOn.org.

MoveOn.org , a progressive advocacy group, has announced it is partnering with the left-leaning cofounders of Ben & Jerry’s to launch a “Scoop the Vote” ice cream truck tour of presidential battleground states starting in Philadelphia Monday at 3 p.m. at Franklin Square.

The kick-off event, which coincides with the start of early voting in Pennsylvania, will feature free ice cream and an appearance by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.

As part of the tour, there will be an online raffle for “free, limited-edition, autographed pints of Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee.” People can also enter the raffle at the tour stops.

The coconut flavor is inspired by the meme that originated with a May 2023 speech Harris gave at the White House . Recalling something her mother would say, Harris explained: “She would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’” Harris went on to add, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”

MoveOn described Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee as “a coconut ice cream with a caramel ripple and confetti stars!”

Britt Jacovich, press secretary for MoveOn.org, said in an email that every pint of the very limited edition ice cream was handmade by Cohen and Greenfield and are autographed by both.

Anyone interested in the raffle can visit: https://campaigns.moveon.org/scoop-2024/

The get-out-the-vote tour will visit more than 20 cities. The other tour locations include Ann Arbor, Mich.; Madison, Wis.; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Las Vegas, Nev.

The tour stops will also include appearances by elected officials, activists, and other “special guests.”

MoveOn said it also is collaborating with Jeni Britton, founder of Jeni’s Ice Creams, and Malai Ice Cream.

Ahead of Cincinnati show, Bill Maher predicts Trump will dump Vance

Portrait of Patricia Gallagher Newberry

Bill Maher is a busy man.

In his fourth decade as a comedian, actor, author and political commentator, Maher is planning a year-long break from stand-up to decide what else to add to his repertoire.

So when The Enquirer asked for 20 minutes of his time before his Sept. 29 show in Cincinnati, his publicist said he could only spare 15 between tapings of “Club Random,” the podcast he launched in 2022, and “Real Time with Bill Maher,” now in its 22 nd season.

Here’s what he had to say (lightly edited) to a handful of our 15 questions in 15 minutes – plus the extra 2:50 he threw in. Spoiler alert: He doesn’t think Ohio’s JD Vance is a keeper.

Do you have a favorite bit in the current show that usually lands pretty well?

They all land. I’ve been doing this for 42 years. If they don’t land, I shouldn’t be doing it at all. I don’t think I come unadvertised. I’m interested in what’s going on in the country, what’s going on in the world. I’m not the kind of comedian who does trivia.

But heavy on politics, given the season?

Certainly, there’s plenty of politics. I mean, it’s just an amazing time. Just in the last month we’ve had so many plot twists. First, the Democrats were going to lose because they were running a man so old that his bad kid with a drug problem was 55. To make matters worse, the guy he was running against got shot by an incel (short for "involuntary celibate"), who picked as vice president the only guy in the country more offensive than he was.

Since you’ve already mentioned Vance, let’s go there. What do you think of JD Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate?

I think he’s going to dump him … because he knows he’s losing now. So he needs an October surprise to change the parameters of the election. Trump will just go ‘I don’t like him. He was very disloyal.’ All he has to say is ‘I’m Trump. I’m doing it. It’s done.’ (His corollary prediction: Trump will run with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. instead.)

Let’s give equal time to Tim Walz. What do you think of Kamala Harris’ decision to pick him?

The pundits thought she was leaning toward (Pennsylvania Gov.) Josh Shapiro. She needs Pennsylvania more than any other state. The fact that she couldn’t pick him because he’s Jewish and the Democrats have this issue with the Israeli war I find very troubling. I think they’re very morally confused about things. (On Walz, Maher noted that the veep pick likes to say he talks like regular people. To that Maher says, “No, you don’t. You talk like a politician and that’s OK. Just don’t lie about it.”)

So I’ve read that you might end the stand-up portion of your career. What’s your thinking on that?

What I want to do is not do it for a year. I’ve done it for 42 years. I’m 68 years old. Is this something I’ve been doing for a long time because I’m addicted to it? Would I be happier if I wasn’t doing it and fill that time with something else? There’s no way to know that until I actually do it.

Who are your favorite kinds of guests?

They’re not careful and they’re not doctrinaire. My least favorite kind are sitting politicians. We book them because we are a show that talks about what’s going on in the news. But politicians are careful and they speak in talking points and that’s not basically what I want my show to be.

Do you want Trump or Harris on either your podcast or show?

Have you invited them.

Of course! I understand why Trump doesn’t want to be on the show. There’s been no one who has been meaner to him. The Democrats? They should do it. I’m generally supportive of their side.

Given the wide range of topics you engage in are there any you just don’t care about?

I might do that with one where everyone agrees. Or it’s just sad. Am I going to have on a Klansman? No, I think we all are pretty decided on what the Klan is and there’s no reason to give them any sort of airing. But pretty much anything else.

Bill Maher brings his “WTF? Tour” to the Taft Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29.

A Stylish Glimpse Into Kacey Musgraves’s Deeper Well Tour

Kacey Musgraves is deeply embedded into tour life at the moment. Since April, the singer has been on her Deeper Well world tour—and this month, she invited Vogue along with her as she continue to tackle her North American leg. Making stops in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, Musgraves has been busy bringing hits like “Cardinal” and “The Architect” to the fan-filled arenas. “So much work has gone into putting this show together,” Musgraves tells Vogue . “It is crazy to see what started as a small, tiny seed of a song expand into this multi-sensory experience; Getting to express yourself in such a big way, and the energy exchange between me and this crowd—I feel very fortunate to be able to do that.”

Of course, Musgraves has worn epic performance fashions for all of her new shows. The singer has found herself slipping into 36 different statement looks—one for each of her 36 shows in North America. “Each city is totally different,” says Musgraves of her approach to tour style. “We have some really fun custom looks coming.” Last week, Vogue asked Musgraves to document four shows and the stellar outfits she wore for them. Below, take in the singer's behind-the-scenes videos and photos, and explore as she walk us through her epic country-meets-glam wardrobe.

Date: September 4 Stadium: Bryce Jordan Center, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania The look: Alex Perry. “I love sparkle, and I love production,” says Musgraves. “I also love things that are very real and grounded. For me, it’s always about finding the right balance between something that feels authentic to me, and something that’s going to really put on a good show.“

Date: September 6 Stadium: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts The look: Norma Kamali. “It’s a fun, two-piece plaid set,” says Musgraves. “It was giving some Irish energy—so I went for it in Boston!”

Night Three

Date: September 7 Stadium: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts The look: Balmain. “It’s all about finding the right silhouettes and fabrics,” says Musgraves. “I love th western paisley details—it’s basically taking a bandana print and magnifying it larger-than-life. There’s something really Texas about that. It’s comfortable and fierce.”

Date: September 9 Stadium: Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey The look: Coperni and Good American. “I decided to wear a little bit of denim,” says Musgraves. “The top is Coperni, and we turned it into a bodysuit to go under these Good American shorts. I also got these new boots for Jersey tonight; They’re by Louis Vuitton, and they’re a mile-long. They’re just so Texas.”
