Put him in, coach. He’s ready to play.

From June through September, the Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and “Center Field” singer John Fogerty will take his ‘Celebration Tour’ all over North America with George Thorogood and Hearty Heart on select dates.

“The celebration never ends!” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee shared on Instagram.

Along the way, he and Thorogood have five NJ and NY stops planned.

First, the 78-year-old classic rock legend is slated to turn up at Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Friday, June 7.

After that, he’ll rock out at Canandaigua, NY’s Constellation Brands Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, June 11, Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 12, and Bethel, NY’s Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on Friday, June 14.

The New York and New Jersey run comes to an end for Fogerty at Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Saturday, June 16.

And if you want to hear “Fortunate Son,” “Who’ll Stop The Rain,” “Down On The Corner,” “Proud Mary,” Bad Moon Rising” and so many more Fogerty classics live, tickets for all 15 concerts can be purchased as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, March 15, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can buy on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Based on what Fogerty played live at his 2022 Las Vegas residency at Encore Theater, Creedence Clearwater Revival fans needn’t worry about whether or not he’ll play the hits you know and love.

Plus, the extended sax solos don’t hurt either.

You can hear the 6.5-minute track — that also happens to be an ode to his wife, Julie —  here .

At all shows, the CCR frontman is bringing a support act along with him to kick things off.

John Fogerty Announces Tour Dates With George Thorogood

John Fogerty  has announced new summer dates for his Celebration Tour, which marks the first time the former  Creedence Clearwater Revival  frontman has performed the songs since acquiring the rights to them early last year.

The tour also features opening support from George Thorogood & the Destroyers. The dates start on June 2 in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

While Fogerty and Thorogood have appeared on concert bills in the past, this summer's run of nearly 20 shows marks the first time they've gone on tour. "George and I have done shows together before, but for years we’ve talked about doing a full tour together," Fogerty said in a press release announcing the dates. "This summer we decided time is short, we better do this now."

Thorogood canceled some dates last spring to deal with a "very serious medical condition." He's since recovered and will launch a tour on April 5 before joining Fogerty on tour two months later.

Where Is John Fogerty Playing Shows in 2024?

After the Fogerty and Thorogood tour starts in early June, the shows will work their way through dates in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. Fogerty will also play a few dates with this band without Thorogood as support. You can see the list of tour dates below.

The Celebration Tour is the first time Fogerty has performed his classic Creedence Clearwater Revival songs as the owner of them. He signed away the publishing rights to his work in 1967, the year the band signed to Fantasy Records.

Over the years he has fought with Fantasy owner Saul Zaentz, who sued Fogerty in 1985, claiming his solo hit "The Old Man Down the Road" sounded too similar to CCR's "Run Through the Jungle." Fogerty bought the publishing rights to his songs in early 2023, although Fantasy Records still owns the master recordings of Creedence's records.

Tickets for Fogerty and Thorogood's tour go on sale March 15 at 10 a.m. local time, with presale tickets available on Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. local time. You can find more information at Fogerty's website .

John Fogerty returned to Upstate New York Tuesday night for the first time since 2019 on a bill with George Thorogood and Hearty Har at Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Arena (CMAC). The 6,500 fans, ranging in age from 30s through what looked like a lot of retirees were primed and ready for a rock party and that’s exactly what they got.

Hearty Har (fronted by Fogerty’s sons Shane and Tyler) opened with a short set of what could best be described as modern psychedelic garage rock. The band has a significant YouTube presence. The Fogerty boys clearly inherited their musical genes from dad and have honed their skills since forming in 2012. They would return to the stage as John Fogerty’s band.

“Lonesome” George Thorogood and the Destroyers, now in their 50th year, were also ready for a rock party. Though the band appeared visibly more subdued than at their New York State Fair appearance last summer, their music was performed with intensity. Their hour long set was non-stop hits, clearly inspired by many of their heroes; John Lee Hooker, Hank Williams and Bo Diddley. “Rock Party,” “Who Do You Love?” “I Drink Alone,” “Get A Haircut,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” and their ultimate bad-ass anthem “Bad To The Bone” had the crowd constantly on their feet. A huge video screen behind the band displayed colorful artistic graphics for the songs in their set. The double stack of amplifiers on either side of their stage was reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and Who concerts from the 70s. Those were not there for show. Their set was one of the loudest concerts this reviewer has witnessed in a long time.

After a short set change, the video screen behind the stage lit up with a “news interview-style” introduction of John Fogerty reminiscing about his musical roots laced with memories of Creedence Clearwater Revival as a prelude to his appearance with a customary flannel shirt and blue jeans center stage to a standing ovation. The billing as “John Fogerty: The Celebration Tour” was apt and for good reason. At 79 years old and with a smile from ear to ear, he proudly announced that finally, after 55 years of turmoil and on-going legal battles with Fantasy Records and then label head Saul Zaentz, Fogerty now owns all of his music -- celebration indeed. He publicly announced that Julie, his wife of 33 years and the love of his life, was instrumental in getting this situation resolved. Years ago, with all the legal complications tormenting him, Fogerty would flatly refuse to perform any of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits he penned, but now he was beaming.

“It took 55 years but I now own all my songs and I’m going to play ‘em all for you,” he shouted out.

Not only did Fogerty have his family with him on tour (Julie was clearly visible side-stage with cell phone in hand taking photos) but his two sons and their band were backing him up on stage. “Bad Moon Rising,” “Up Around The Bend,” “Green River,” and “Born On The Bayou” were delivered with ferocity. There was no quiver in his voice. He can still hit all the high notes.

After a short pause, he told the audience the history of the Rickenbacher guitar he was playing.

“Years ago after Creedence, I was so dejected that I gave this guitar away to some guy. This was the guitar I played at Woodstock” (in 1969.)

He explained how he came to write “Who’ll Stop The Rain” with this very guitar after Creedence appeared at that soggy festival. He held it up to show it off, proudly telling the hushed crowd how Julie had scoured the internet and with a great deal of luck, found the guitar and was able to buy it back, putting it under the Christmas tree for John. The photos taken that Christmas morning were put up on the giant monitor behind the stage to loud cheers and whistling.

“Looking Out My Back Door,” and later solo hits “Centerfield,” “The Old Man Down The Road,” and “Rock and Roll Girls” (about his daughters) led into more Creedence hits “Down On The Corner,” “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” and perhaps the ultimate protest song of the Woodstock era, “Fortunate Son.” The encore was topped off with “Traveling Band” and the song that Creedence is best known for, “Proud Mary.”

Loyal fans who have waited so many years to hear the Creedence songs performed once again left with smiles on their faces.

John Fogerty: The Celebration Tour

John Fogerty is a true American treasure. As the leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Fogerty forged a distinctive, groundbreaking sound all his own, equal parts blues, country, pop, rockabilly, R&B, swamp boogie, and Southern fried rock ‘n’ roll, all united by his uniquely evocative lyrical perspective. Fogerty is a Grammy winner and has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is the only musician to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for his song, “Centerfield,” a staple at baseball stadiums across the country. Among Fogerty’s many hit songs, which have sold over 100 million records, both as a solo artist and as leader of CCR, highlights include “Proud Mary,” “Susie Q,” “Fortunate son,” “Born on the Bayou,” “Bad Moon Rising,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” among many others.

In 2019, Fogerty celebrated 50 years in music with a worldwide tour with his show, “My 50 Year Trip.” An album, 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks, featuring a collection of Creedence Clearwater Revival hits, including from the set list of his performance at the legendary Woodstock music festival in 1969 among other fan favourites, was released on November 8, 2019.

In April 2020, while self-quarantining together the Fogerty Family – featuring John with his sons Shane, Tyler, and daughter Kelsy – gathered in their home studio to play some music together. A weekly video series began and became so popular that a digital EP, Fogerty’s Factory, was released via BMG on Fogerty’s birthday, May 28, 2020. An extended Fogerty’s Factory full album was released on November 20, 2020. In December of that year, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle Vol. 1 hit the milestone of charting for more than 500 weeks on the Billboard 200, becoming only the eighth album to ever do so. In early January 2021, Fogerty released his first new original solo music in eight years, “Weeping in The Promised Land.” The song is Fogerty’s definitive look back at 2020, ultimately serving as a moving tribute to those who had been affected by the pandemic, as well as those who have suffered through prejudice and injustice, with an eye on brighter days ahead.

Fogerty recently partnered with Concord on the official release of Creedence Clearwater Revival At The Royal Albert Hall on the label’s Craft Recordings. More than 50 years after the legendary 1970 show, the original multitrack tapes were meticulously restored and mixed by GRAMMY®-winning producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell. The accompanying documentary takes viewers from CCR’s earliest years together in ElCerrito, CA through their meteoric rise to fame, and is the only concert footage of the original CCR lineup to be released in its entirety.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited Talk Farewell Tour and Ignoring Their Critics

By David Browne

David Browne

In the past few years, a growing number of classic-rock acts have announced farewell tours. The latest twist arrived last week, when Creedence Clearwater Revisited rolled out plans for their final live run, set to wrap up later this year. “We’re calling it ‘The Final Revival,’” says drummer Doug Clifford, who will turn 74 in two weeks. “We’ve got grandchildren and they’re growing like crazy before your eyes. It’s time to change things a bit and make the family the priority.”

Adds bassist Stu Cook, 73, “Frankly, the road is a drag. We love the band, but we’ve had enough of hanging around a hotel room waiting to do our thing. There are far more years behind us than left in front of us.”

The twist, of course, is that Revisited isn’t the original Creedence Clearwater Revival , the hard-driving band powered by the voice, songs and guitar of John Fogerty . Featuring only Cook and Clifford — but not Fogerty nor Fogerty’s late brother, rhythm guitarist Tom — Revisited remains what Cook calls, with a knowing chuckle, “somewhere between a cover band, a tribute band and the real deal.”

These days, it’s become the new normal for heritage bands to tour with replacement (and usually younger) frontmen. Revisited weren’t the first such reconfiguration, but until now, they’ve been one of the most enduring. Launched in 1995, Revisited have now lasted more than five times longer than the original Creedence, which ran from 1968 to 1972. “When we started, we had no idea what was going to happen,” says Clifford. “Or if we were going to be accepted by the fans. We had a five-year plan and nothing else. There was some struggling in there, but we were immediately accepted. You win ’em over one show at a time.”

The thought of reviving the band as Creedence Clearwater Revisited probably began in 1993, when Creedence were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Cook and Clifford assumed they would be joining Fogerty onstage to reprise a few of their songs, but Cook says they had “no idea” they wouldn’t be playing with him until that night. Instead, Fogerty’s backup band included Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.

“They BS’d us for months that we were going to play or jam,” says Cook. “That mollified us until Doug went to see what drum set he was playing and a crew guy said, ‘Don’t you know you’re not playing?’ We called John and had a confrontation about the whole thing. That was the sneak-attack part part of it, a little bit like Pearl Harbor.” The two men walked out of the hall as soon as Fogerty and his guests began performing. For his part, Fogerty has said he had issues with his former bandmates by then, including the claim they “sold their voting rights in Creedence” to his nemesis, the late Fantasy Records head Saul Zaentz. “That really betrayed me,” he recently told an interviewer. Cook and Clifford says they “only proxied their voting rights for compilation albums, which did not give the record label a majority, leaving a majority to the balance of CCR to vote and decide.”

Not long after, Cook ended up visiting Clifford at the latter’s home in Tahoe, California, where the two jammed together for the first time in years. Cook insists it was that bond, more than revenge for the Hall of Fame induction, that spurred a Creedence resurrection. “You can only go so far with bass and drums, so we thought, ‘Why don’t we do something — and what would be better than what we already do?’” he says. “It was just an idea that we had to get the hell out of the house. It wasn’t, ‘We’re gonna show him.’ But I understand why people might assume we adopted a bit of that attitude.”

Adds Clifford, “The humiliation done that night was so wrong, and I’ve come to the conclusion that the seeds for this project were planted that night. But also, nobody was playing those songs, including John, when we started this project. People would say, ‘I never got the chance to see you guys.’”

For the first Revisited — the revamped name was suggested by a concert promoter friend of theirs — the band recruited former Cars guitarist Elliot Easton and a new lead singer also named John (Tristao). “John Fogerty is one of the most recognizable rock & roll voices,” says Cook, “and we told the guys when we were auditioning, ‘Don’t try to copy Fogerty. Just sing the songs as they should be sung.’ It’s a delicate balance.”

At a time when fans and promoters alike were wary of any rock reunions without all the principals, Revisited weren’t always greeted warmly. Months went by without work, and only bit by bit did the jobs (including tours of Asia and Europe) start coming. “We took a lot of hits,” says Cook. “People didn’t think we could do this or should do this. Creedence was an underdog, and Revisited was a double underdog. But we knew we could do it. Having the rhythm section makes us feel and sound quite a bit more like the original recordings than anybody else.”

The Biggest Band in America in 2024 Is ... Creedence Clearwater Revival

Watch roger daltrey cover ccr's 'born on the bayou,' paul simon's 'the boy in the bubble'.

“We always introduce everyone in the band,” adds Clifford. “The idea was never to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes that it was John onstage. We took strides to make sure that was common knowledge.”

The first of many legal hassles arose soon after, when Fogerty challenged the use of the Revisited name in court in 1996. Fogerty — who himself began playing Creedence songs again onstage in 1997 after not doing so since their breakup — won an injunction, forcing Cook, Clifford and their bandmates to call themselves Cosmo’s Factory, after a Creedence album title. But a court of appeals overturned the decision and allowed Cook and Clifford to use the revamped Creedence name; in exchange for a cut of their touring and merchandising income, Fogerty withdrew his complaint. Cook and Clifford copyrighted the Revisited name and have used it ever since.

Revisited rolled along, even releasing a live album, Recollection , with their versions of the old Creedence songs. (The current lineup includes lead singer Dan McGuinness, lead guitarist Kurt Griffey and multi-instrumentalist Steve Gunner.) The group hit another legal snag in 2014, when Cook, Clifford and Tom Fogerty’s widow sued Fogerty for trademark infringement. By then, Fogerty was doing concerts performing Creedence albums, and advertising them as such, which irked his ex-bandmates. “He could always play the material — anybody can,” says Cook. “But we felt he was appropriating the brand. The billing he was using was getting cloudy.”

Fogerty in turn sued them for unpaid royalties dating back to 2011, which Cook admits was done intentionally. “We stopped paying him,” Cook admits. “We thought, ‘Why should we pay you when you’re taking these kind of un-allowed liberties?’ But we kept the money we owed him, so it wasn’t like it was missing. We were trying to get his attention. We’ve done it to remind him that we were part of it too. Even though he was able to exclude us from the Hall of Fame, he wasn’t able to erase our tracks from the records.”

Matters between Cook and Clifford on one side and Fogerty on the other remain frosty. Cook says he hasn’t spoken with Fogerty in years, and the camps still only communicate through lawyers. Yet he men have reached a certain détente. They’re now all part of Creedence Clearwater Revival LLC, jointly approving projects like the inclusion of the band’s complete Woodstock performance in a box set of the 1969 festival, or an upcoming, first-ever line of Creedence merch.

“It’s not what most people would call a reunion, but it’s still a milestone,” Cook says. “It’s a landmark in our relationship, given how it’s not been a thing of beauty the last 45 years. There’s still a lot of stuff to iron out, but things are functioning more like they should. There’s more trust. From my perspective, it bodes well that we can at least have all the water and mud and shit under the bridge. The media likes to stir things up. We had an ongoing war that would flare up and be gone. But we’re stuck with each other forever, whether we like it or not.”

With or without Fogerty’s blessings, Revisited will replay the vintage classics, from “Proud Mary” to “Fortunate Son,” at state fairs, casinos and other venues through the fall. “We feel we’ve been completely vindicated,” says Cook. “There’s always people who leave nasty posts on our Facebook page. But we don’t pay attention to that. There are still some purists out there, but they don’t know anything about the original band. They don’t have any credence, and that’s with three e e ‘s, not four.”

Music | Review: John Fogerty rolls out CCR gold in homecoming concert

Bay area rock icon wows full house at saratoga’s mountain winery.

The 76-year-old Bay Area rock icon, who was born in Berkeley and grew up in El Cerrito, basically sprinted out onto the stage Saturday night at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga.

“We are here to have a good rockin’ time,” the vocalist-guitarist said to the full house in attendance. “We are doing stuff like this again, and it feels really good.”

Maybe Fogerty had been saving up his energy while the COVID-19 pandemic had closed down most music venues for well over a year. Perhaps he was just excited to be performing back home in the Bay Area, the place that gave birth to his legendary former band, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), and set Fogerty on a direct path to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Whatever the reason, Fogerty was bursting with energy and good vibes as he ran through 20 terrific songs during a roughly 100-minute show. He kicked off the concert with a rowdy, revved-up version of the classic “Up Around the Bend” from CCR’s blockbuster 1970 outing, “Cosmo’s Factory,” and then dove right into the title track of 1969’s multiplatinum “Green River.”

He reintroduced fans to “Suzie Q,” the bluesy psychedelic cover of the Dale Hawkins rockabilly tune that proved to be CCR’s first hit, and followed up with a tour through the swamp-rock masterpiece, “Born on the Bayou.”

“How you doing?” Fogerty asked the crowd, which roared back in joy and excitement. “Me, too.”

Fogerty sounded strong on the microphone, as well as on a variety of cool-looking guitars, including a Rickenbacker he purchased in 1969.

“I played this guitar at Woodstock!” the rocker exclaimed.

Fogerty actually gave that Rickenbacker away not long after that famed counterculture event, but decades later, Fogerty’s wife Julie made it her mission to get that beloved guitar back for him.

“I didn’t see the guitar for 44 years,” Fogerty said. “I got my my baby back, and I got to tell you, I’m tickled.”

The joy was apparent in the music, as Fogerty led his top-notch band — featuring sons Shane and Tyler — through “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Lodi” and “Run Through the Jungle.”

For those keeping score, that made eight stone-cold CCR classics in a row to open the show.

Fogerty then decided to showcase his solo career, muscling through “Hot Rod Heat” from 1997’s “Blue Moon Swamp” and performing his topical new song, “Weeping in the Promised Land,” penned in response to the pandemic, the killing of George Floyd and other recent events.

“It really has been a heck of a couple of years,” Fogerty said.

After that moving gospel-folk offering, the star played a couple of CCR’s best covers — “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Good Golly Miss Molly” — the latter featuring some epic guitar work from Shane Fogerty and some strong vocals (and dance moves!) from brother Tyler.

The diversely appealing double shot of CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” and “Down on the Corner” got fans up and dancing, and the festive atmosphere continued once Fogerty broke out his baseball-bat guitar for the sing-along favorite “Centerfield.”

He closed the main set with “The Old Man Down the Road” and “Fortunate Son” and, forgoing the ritual of walking offstage and waiting to be called back for an encore, Forgerty just stayed put and performed “Bad Moon Rising” and “Proud Mary.”

John Fogerty Talks New Creedence Clearwater Revival Documentary and Making Peace with His Past

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says he's "so happy" fans will finally get to see footage of CCR's 1970 performance at London's Royal Albert Hall

john fogerty ccr tour

When Creedence Clearwater Revival took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall on April 14, 1970, the rockers were at their peak.

Just two years after releasing their self-titled debut album — and two years out from when they'd eventually call it quits — CCR played a legendary 12-song set for the British crowd, drawing a 15-minute standing ovation for frontman John Fogerty and his bandmates, brother Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford.

Despite its success, a recording of the show sat not in the hands of fans, but in the record company's vault, long thought to be lost — until now. Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall , the live album, and an accompanying documentary concert film titled Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall , will be released on Sept. 16 — and it's about time, says Fogerty.

"I'm so happy that the fans finally get to see this. It's been sitting, languishing, in a vault somewhere," the rocker, 77, tells PEOPLE. "I'd hear reports of people [seeing it], and it always surprised me, like, 'Wow, somebody must have made a copy.' It became very iconic, in the mythical sense. It took on a life of its own."

For Fogerty, reliving his past via the film was an emotional walk down memory lane, especially as he took in videos of his late brother Tom. Though the two were close during their time in CCR, the brothers' relationship soured ahead of Tom's death in 1990 amid disputes with their management and record company.

"You're watching footage of your brother who has passed away and you just wish that he could be alive and you could talk to him," Fogerty says. "It's just that… I don't know how to say it, that literal thing that you do in your mind and it almost seems real. And then of course the scene changes to something else and you realize you were just watching a film rather than watching the real person."

Fogerty founded Creedence in the late 1960s with classmates Clifford and Cook, and after Tom joined the fold on rhythm guitar, the group released their first album in 1968. With feet-stomping riffs straight out of the South, the California boys quickly made a name for themselves, scoring five top 10 singles and three top 10 albums in just one year.

Hits like "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising" and "Down on the Corner" showcased Fogerty's swamp rock-steeped songwriting skills, while politically minded anthems like "Fortunate Son" immortalized the discontent of the American spirit in the era of the Vietnam War.

Tom left CCR in 1971 and the remaining three members disbanded a year later amid internal strife. Though Fogerty later launched a successful solo career, a contentious few decades followed, including a falling out with his former bandmates over royalties and a descent into alcoholism. When CCR was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, he played not with Clifford and Cook, but with Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.

Now, the musician says he's at peace with his past, and gives all of the credit to his wife Julie, whom he met in 1986 and married in 1991.

"I'm the luckiest man alive. I met my wife, Julie, and when you meet somebody and fall in love in this life, it really makes everything else seem incidental," Fogerty says. "And no matter how bad all the pains and things I went through had been, as I allowed the love to just grow and grow in my heart, there started to be a sense of awareness on my part."

He continues: "I just became very aware of the idea that what was really important in this life, at least for me, was to be in love and have met the person that most matters to you in this whole world, and that everything forward from that is going to be not only OK, it's going to be wonderful. I've kept that feeling alive ever since."

It was his wife's influence that also repaired Fogerty's relationship with his own songs. In the 1980s, amid conflict with his record company, the musician decided he would no longer perform any songs owned by Fantasy Records, a list that included all of his CCR classics, like "Proud Mary" and "Up Around the Bend."

Though the "Centerfield" singer says now it was an "unfortunate decision" to shelve the tracks for so long, he understands that he did it as a way of making it through the pain he felt.

"I certainly felt that I had been done wrong and cheated and lied to and all those other sorts of things, and at the center of all that was the music and the songs that I had created. But as time has gone on, there's another benefit for my having met Julie, and that was I decided I was going to start performing my songs again," he says. "I'm just really happy that my life turned out this way and I get to celebrate that music [now]."

Celebrating the music has long been Fogerty's desire. For years, that music provided a temperature check on American politics, with the rocker long considered one of the country's preeminent crafters of socially conscious music.

Though hits like "Fortunate Son" were written with the politics of the late 1960s in mind, the messaging still stands amid a polarized America — something Fogerty, while happy with the longevity of his work, finds disappointing.

"Back in the day, even though young people were protesting against the Vietnam War and also about civil rights and personal liberties and things like that… pretty much everybody under 30 had a very similar point of view about life," he says. "It was a matter of a generation gap, young people versus older people, and in some sense, people without much personally against the so-called fat cats up at the top who were, by and large, a lot older and probably much more conservative. It's just that dynamic still pretty much holds true. I just feel saddened that in America now in this new millennium, we're so polarized, and instead of discussing, we're shouting at each other and hurling epithets and even more at each other."

He continues: "I hope we find a peaceful middle ground. It will do us all more good if we calm down and are able to concentrate on the things that we have in common and try to work out the differences."

With his focus now, more than ever, on family, Fogerty has welcomed his sons Shane, 30, and Tyler, 29, and daughter Kelsy, 20, into the family line of business, with the group recording and releasing Fogerty's Factory , an album of mostly CCR covers, in 2020.

The star says his sons — who also perform together as Hearty Har — were raised on classic rock and grew up trailing Dad on tour, so it was "perfectly natural" for them to pursue careers in music.

Though he watched his relationship with his own brother deteriorate as business drama interrupted the music, Fogerty has found it rewarding to watch his sons form a musical bond of their own.

"It's just the greatest to be on stage and having my family out there playing with me and doing a great job," he says. "It's just wonderful, it's the best feeling in the world."

Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall and Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall , which is narrated by actor Jeff Bridges, will be released on Netflix on Sept. 16. A super deluxe edition box set of both the album and the film will be out Nov. 18.

In 2019, Fogerty celebrated 50 years in music with a worldwide tour with his show, “My 50 Year Trip.” An album, 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks, featuring a collection of Creedence Clearwater Revival hits, including songs from the set list of his performance at the legendary Woodstock music festival in 1969 among other fan favorites, was released on November 8, 2019.

The accompanying documentary takes viewers from CCR’s earliest years together in El Cerrito, CA through their meteoric rise to fame, and is the only concert footage of the original CCR lineup to be released in its entirety.

In 2023, Fogerty, the composer of iconic songs that have inspired generations – “Proud Mary,” “Down on the Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” among many others – acquired a majority interest of the worldwide publishing rights to his historic song catalog from Concord. The compositions have been both a decades-long dream and a personal mission for John. For years, the copyrights to Fogerty’s classic songs were the property of Saul Zaentz, the owner of Fantasy Records, who sold the label and its publishing portfolio to the former Concord Music Group in 1995. Fogerty, who extricated himself from Fantasy in 1974, re-signed with the label upon its purchase by Concord. Even so, he was not able to gain ownership of his songs – until now.

“As of this January, I own my own songs again. This is something I thought would never be a possibility. After 50 years, I am finally reunited with my songs. I also have a say in where and how my songs are used. Up until this year, that is something I have never been able to do. I am looking forward to touring and celebrating this year! I want to thank Concord for helping to make all of this happen. And, I am excited for new ideas and a renewed interest in my music … like a revival,” said John Fogerty.

It’s a strange twist in rock history in part because there might not have been a Woodstock in Bethel, N.Y., on Aug. 15-18, 1969 had not Creedence agreed to headline. The band was dominating the American charts at the time, and only after it signed on did other bands follow. But when singer-guitarist John Fogerty led CCR on stage in the early morning hours of Aug. 17, he saw Woodstock Nation fast asleep . The half-million-strong army was “all intertwined and asleep, covered with mud,” exhausted by a long day of rain, Fogerty once recalled.

Disappointed by the lackluster reception and underwhelmed by his own band’s performance, Fogerty refused to allow CCR’s music to be included in the 1970 documentary movie and triple-album soundtrack. The movie went on to win an Academy Award and the soundtrack topped the album charts. Between them the projects reached a far larger audience than attended the show.

But this month, Creedence’s entire 11-song, 55-minute set is finally available for the first time, both as part of a massive box set, “Woodstock — Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive” (Rhino), and as a stand-alone album, “Creedence Clearwater Revival: Live at Woodstock” (Craft/Fantasy).

Contrary to Fogerty’s original take on the performance, it’s a blazing document of the band at its peak and should’ve helped cement the band’s legacy. Instead, it also serves as one more reminder of how the band undercut its career.

Creedence’s original lineup of John and Tom Fogerty, drummer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook released six good to great albums from 1968-70, and then never played together again. A seventh studio album, “Mardi Gras,” was released in 1972 after Tom Fogerty’s departure and with minimal input from John Fogerty. Lingering bitterness among the band members and mounds of litigation in subsequent decades turned CCR’s musical accomplishments into a footnote. “Live at Woodstock” argues for a reassessment, and serves as a timely reminder of just how transcendent the band was in its heyday.

John Fogerty performing with Creedence Clearwater Revival at Woodstock on Aug. 17, 1969.

The fascinating but undeniably bloated “Back to the Garden” is everything Creedence was not, a tale of excess and erratic performances spread over 432 tracks. Much of the music doesn’t live up to the myth, a myth largely created by Michael Wadleigh’s 1970 movie and Joni Mitchell’s 1970 hit song “Woodstock.” Both presented an idyllic view of the weekend’s all-for-one idealism that played out in the mud on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in rural New York. Mitchell didn’t even attend the festival, but wrote the song out of a sense of “deprivation” for having missed it.

Amid the throw-away sets by such bygones as Sha Na Na, Sweetwater, Bert Sommer and Quill, the festival presented some indelible moments: Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner,” Santana’s furious Latin-rock, Sly and the Family Stone’s epic celebration. And now we can add CCR’s set to that handful of keepers.

Those who were awake in the audience, as well as Fogerty’s bandmates, would concur. “The performances are classic CCR,” bassist Cook later told band biographer Hank Bordowitz, “and I’m still amazed by the number of people who don’t even know we were one of the headliners.”

Cook’s frustration spoke to turmoil that was brewing within the band even as it was enjoying its greatest success, and eventually led to a long, sad postscript of ill will and lawsuits.

It’s not surprising, given that even during the band’s rise, there was an undertow of uneasiness. The early incarnations of Creedence saw John Fogerty deferring to his older brother, Tom, the original lead singer. Creedence asserted itself in a Northern California rock scene dominated by the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead only when John Fogerty took over the songwriting and became the band’s de facto leader, an indefatigable hit machine who drove himself and his bandmates to the breaking point even as he was piling up classic songs.

He found his voice while in the Army Reserve when he composed “Porterville” for the band’s 1968 debut album, which captured the fugitive paranoia of a generation that had been conscripted to fight in a war it didn’t understand. When he returned home to El Cerrito, Calif., the songwriting floodgates opened and he wrote a series of songs that would transform CCR.

“In 1968, I made the decision that our songs didn’t quite measure up,” Fogerty once told the Tribune. “I would stay up well into the night just thinking, staring at a blank apartment wall with no pictures on it. There was some kind of meditation going on. I removed myself into this Bayou world, this thing that has come up many times in my writing, a picture of the South where all the great music I loved had come from. And when I got into that realm, I thought it was cool, different. It was beyond my normal commonplace world.”

There are certain old rockers where there’s no need to grade on a curve, and John Fogerty certainly falls into that timeless category.

At age 79, he’s still visibly — and audibly — psyched to be on stage, especially after finally winning a 50-year legal battle in 2023 for the global rights to the music he wrote as the founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival (see news reports here and here ). It was a feel good evening all around as Fogerty was here performing with his sons, Shane and Tyler Fogerty, both guitarists and vocalists who opened the September 1 Santa Barbara Bowl show with their psychedelic rock band Hearty Har.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers also played a solid set of their hits before proud papa Fogerty Senior came on stage and waxed rhapsodically about how stoked he was to be performing the family owned songs alongside his family. Then he proceeded to shred through the catalog of Creedence Clearwater hits with the energy of a man half his age. In fine form, the band started with “Bad Moon Rising,” “Up Around the Bend,” and “Green River.”

Then Fogerty shared his excitement again, saying, “I just got my songs back and I’m gonna play every one of them for you,” before launching into the familiar twang of “Born on the Bayou.”

Deservedly hailed as one of the most influential musicians in rock history, Fogerty was in a sweetly sentimental mood on stage as, in a preamble to one of his most famous songs, he told us that the guitar in his hands — recently returned to him thanks to the considerable efforts of his wife/manager Julie — was the one he played with at Woodstock. The story was told against the background of some video footage of what is perhaps still the most iconic rock concert ever. It was the middle of the night, Fogerty shared, his girlfriend had left him, and a dog bit him (or so he said) and he went on “to write this song on this very guitar.”

The song, of course, was “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” and hearing Fogerty play it live truly felt like he was giving us a gift of a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history. The great guitar intro to “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” was up next, followed by a nice saxophone section on “Rock and Roll Girls,” and the psychedelic sounds of “Effigy.” The sentimental “Joy of My Life” which Fogerty wrote in honor of he and Julie’s 33rd anniversary was an interesting, if a bit odd, juxtaposition with the Golliwogs song “Fight Fire,” which he explained was written in response to the British Invasion, an era in which Creedence was “told to play mod.” These guys really were around for a long, long time.

Videos that looked like aliens accompanied “It Came out of the Sky.” “Long as I Can See the Light” was up next, followed by a cover of Gladys Knight & the Pips’ “Heard It through the Grapevine.” Another impressive electric guitar solo on “Keep on Chooglin’” led into the iconic “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” — which got the entire Bowl audience out of our seats and singing along. Rain is obviously a good muse for Fogerty and his very tight band, which, in addition to his sons, also included Ritchie Millsap on drums, Jesse Wilson on the big bass, and Bob Malone on keyboards.

Next up was the baseball ditty “Centerfield,” then “Down on the Corner,” “The Old Man Down the Road,” and “Fortunate Son.” Fogerty reflected, “I wrote those songs years ago, except for Grapevine,” and thanks to my “relentless wife” it’s so great to play them again.

They called this the “Worldwide Celebration Tour,” and it certainly felt like it that night. Fogerty’s enthusiasm and happiness was so infectious, even the most cynical among us would have a hard time not responding to it. And it truly was great to hear those songs again, including the encore, where they played “Travelin’ Band” and “Proud Mary,” the Tina Turner hit that was originally written by Fogerty for Creedence Clearwater Revival.

John Fogerty is one classic rocker who is still driven to entertain an audience with gusto, and being there to experience it made for a truly memorable night.
