Day 1 Arrival in Odense

Only 1.5 hours from Copenhagen, Odense is the third-largest city in Denmark. Plan to arrive early enough to explore the cobblestone streets and to visit the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson. Your bikes and trip details will be waiting for you at your hotel.

Day 2 Odense to Assens

Today you follow country roads to the charming coastal town of Assens. Take time to wander the marina and enjoy wonderful views of “Lillebaelt,” the straight separating Fyn Island from the Jutland Peninsula.

Day 3 Assens to Faaborg

Enjoy more cycling in the Danish Countryside passing ancient churches and manor houses. Today’s destination is the town of Faaborg, featuring brightly colored half-timber houses with red-tiled roofs.

Day 4 Faaborg to Svendborg

Today is a day for island hopping. A morning ferry carries you from Faaborg to the island of Aero.  Enjoy a relaxed day exploring the island and its communities before an afternoon ferry carries you back to Fyn Island to the town of Svendborg.

Day 5 Svendborg

Enjoy a day to rest your legs and explore the town of Svendborg, a traditional Danish fishing village. There are lots to do on your day off the bike. Enjoy a short ride to a sandy beach or cycle to a marsh for great bird watching. History buffs will enjoy visits to the church and Egeskov castle.

Day 6 Svendborg-Nyborg

Your destination today is the town of Nyborg, the first capital of Denmark. Nyborg is home to impressive castles and manor houses and features one of Denmark’s finest craft distillers. Odds are you passed through Nyborg on the way to the start of your tour.  The Great Belt bridge is the third largest suspension bridge in the world and offers a unique viewpoint from an under bridge viewpoint.

Day 7 Back to Odense

One more day of cycling awaits as you pedal back to the town of Odense. Originally a Viking port, the town of Kerteminda has been welcoming visitors for centuries. Kerterminda is a great spot for lunch or ice cream. Be sure to take the time to view the colorful town center before pedaling onto Odense.

The island of Fyn is often referred to as the garden of Denmark. Renowned for its fruit there might be something to the talk about this wonderful island. Fyn is also in the centre of Denmark, making the island very accessible from both Copenhagen Airport and with the train directly from the rest of Europe. South of Fyn lies the archipelago with small picturesque islands connected by ferries, offering both a break in the bike riding and also an experience of being off the beaten track where time and fastness is not that important. The landscape is really welcoming and scenic with a good variation of flat distances and gentle hills.

Arrive on your own to Odense and prepare for a relaxing and exiting tour. If you have booked a rental bike you will find it at the hotel. Tonight you stay in Odense.

Odense - Assens

Odense is the capital of Fyn – and also well known as the birthplace of author Hans Christian Andersen. It is worth to have a stroll around the city. From urban environment out into rural landscape on minor roads, starting to experience the idyllic scenery of Denmark’s garden. Today you end up in Assens – a charming old town on the west coast of Fyn overlooking Lillebælt (Small Belt) and the hometown of art museum Willemoesgaarden.

Assens - Faaborg

Heading southeast towards the “Alps of Fyn” todays route gives you both very nice looks over the water and also comfortable challenges in the gently hilled landscape. You pass manor houses and century old churches and approaching your destination – the old harbour town of Faaborg – you start overlooking the archipelago of south Fyn, where you might spot a local ferry or the sail of an old wooden ship. Faaborg itself offers small streets to stroll and old houses to create a very specific atmosphere.

Faaborg - Æero - Svendborg

Today it’s your turn to literally experience the archipelago: you start of with the ferry from Faaborg to the island of Ærø (Aeroe). The trip lasts one hour and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while arriving “the proper way” to a real island: by boat. Landing harbour on Ærø is Søby (Soeby) from where you follow small roads to the fascinating town of Ærøskøbing (Aeroeskoebing). Old houses and cobble stoned streets awaits you – along with an interesting history. Remember your camera! From Ærøskøbing you take another ferry back to Fyn and arrives at Svendborg, where you stay 2 nights. An alternative to the ferries and the visit to Ærø is to bike directly from Faaborg to Svendborg – approx. the same distance, but saving the time and costs of the ferries.

Svendborg is the maritime centre of Fyn. Just next to the quay of the ferry from Ærø is “Træskibsbroen” (the wooden ships bridge), where you can be lucky to see a very fine collection of old wooden ships. The city itself offers shopping, attractions, restaurants – and of course a variety of bars, as it is still a lively seaman’s town. You might also take a daytrip in the surroundings – and maybe visit the castle Egeskov, hosting a fine collection of old cars and aeroplanes. Read more:  https://www.egeskov.dk/en

Svendborg - Nyborg

From Svendborg and north the water on your right hand changes it’s name to Storebælt (Great Belt). Often you see small stalls along the route selling local fruits and vegetables. Again you pass impressing old manor houses – and arriving in Nyborg you see the Storebæltsbroen (Great Belt Bridge) – not long ago the longest spanning bridge in the world. Nyborg is your goal for today – maybe you want to visit the impressive Nyborg Castle.

Nyborg - Odense

From Nyborg you head north to the picturesque town Kerteminde. A good choice could be to visit the Fjord & Bælt-center (“Fiord and Belt Centre”) – or maybe have an ice cream at the harbour – before you head back for Odense, enjoying even more beautiful scenery, timbered houses and lovely gardens on the way.

Family trip to Denmark

We are a family of 4, kids are 10 and 12. We usually bike a lot and the climate and terrain were very easy for the kids to handle. It was a beautiful country to bike around, with lovely paths, rolling hills and wild blackberries abound along the trails. All of the cities were charming. The accomodations were nice, we stayed in a hostel in Svenborg that was very lively and a fun change for our kids to be around Danish kids. Bike helmets ended up included so that was a nice surprise. The bikes worked great. Navigation was easy to follow and the recommended App was helpful to not have to pull the map out constantly. I would have biked for another week.

Enchanting tour of Fyn!

The lime green bikes were easy to operate, the route was clear, the hotels comfortable. We loved the easy self-guided pace and the places we visited in Funen. This was my first experience with Bike Tours and I would totally do another self-guided biking trip with them. Great memories!

The Tour of Denmark's island of Fyn

The routes were well marked, easy to follow and mostly on bike trails or low traffic roads. The bike was a full suspension mountain bike. A little over kill, but it did come in handy a couple of times. The accommodations were centrally located in the towns. The towns are charming and historical. The best day was the tour of the Island of Earo. The Danes are the happiest people on Earth and are very glorious. I will definitely visit Denmark again. I did not get to meet any representative of the tour company.

Cycle routes on Funen 2024

Fyn, also known as Denmark's "garden", offers unique cycling experiences. The picturesque cycling routes lead through idyllic landscapes, lush fields and charming villages. Experience the island's beautiful coastline and enjoy trips along Funen's many lakes. Visit historic castles and manors on the way, and take a detour to the cozy Funen towns. With a well-developed network of cycle paths, Funen is the ideal place for cyclists of all ages and levels.

With these beautiful settings, Funen forms the starting point for many fantastic cycling tours and nature experiences.

The guinea pig route

The porpoise route is a good one-day trip of just over 35 km. The trip starts in Middelfart, goes through Strib and finally around the beautiful zoo on the Hindsgavl peninsula. The route takes you along small roads and paths along the shores of the Little Belt. On this route, with a little luck, you can spot a porpoise, one of the world's smallest whales.

Bike Island Route

If you choose the Bike Island Route, you will get around all of Funen, incl. Ærø and Langeland. It is recommended that you plan some breaks and overnight stays along the way. The Bike Island Route is a long continuous route of 570 km including the ferry crossing to Ærø, you can choose to take the whole route or individual stages. It is free to start the trip anywhere.

Regional route 41+42: Hindsholm

On this cycle route you come from Kerteminde to Korshavn, and you can advantageously drive past Fyns Hoved as the route ends nearby. The Hindsholm peninsula is something very special with idyllic landscapes, large manor houses and orchards along the water. Cycle tours on Hindsholm take you along winding roads, in hilly green surroundings. It is free to start the trip anywhere. 

Regional route 45: Odense - Kerteminde

This route is one of the shorter ones at just over 24 km, the trip follows cycle route no. 45. It stretches from Odense city center to Kerteminde harbour.

The trip through the town of Kølstrup contains a lot of charming smaller half-timbered houses. When you come to Ladby, you can choose to take a detour to the Ladby Viking Museum. Otherwise, the trip continues along Odensevej, where you again hit Kerteminde Fjord, which you follow all the way to Kerteminde town, an incredibly beautiful stretch. When you arrive in Kerteminde, you cycle over a bridge, where you will find cobbled streets and a lot of cozy cafes.

Regional route 80+81: Northern Langelang

Northern Langeland offers enchanting nature and historic sites. When you cycle here, you move through lush forests, past old half-timbered houses and views of the blue sea. It's a journey back in time, where each pedal thread brings out new adventures and hidden treasures.

Regional route 82+83: Southern Langeland

In southern Langeland, cycling is an experience of tranquility and natural beauty. You drive through rolling fields, past historical landmarks and along shining coastlines. The fresh air mixed with the scent of the sea makes the ride soothing as you enjoy the view and discover the island's hidden gems on two wheels.

Regional route 90+91+92: Ærø

Ærø is an idyllic island in the South Funen archipelago, which is perfect for cycling trips. The rolling landscapes, charming villages and breathtaking coastlines make it an unforgettable experience. Cycling here gives a feeling of calm and immersion in the Danish nature, where you can experience Ærø's unique beauty up close.

Odense – Bogense Route

A scenic cycling route that stretches from Odense city center to the cozy market town of Bogense. On the trip you will, among other things, pass Glavendruplund and Dallund castle.

Odense - Svendborg Route

The cycle ride from Odense to Svendborg leads you through Funen's breathtaking landscape. The tour offers a mix of quiet woodlands, open farmland and historic villages. While following the rhythm of the pedals, Funen's characteristic soul and charm become apparent, and the journey is enriched by the island's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Danish islands by bike between sea, ports and countryside

Looping around odense, you will discover the pretty and peaceful danish islands of funen and ærø..

Made up of 443 islands, 76 of which are inhabited, Denmark is a country where the sea is never far away . Never more than 50 kilometers away to be exact! This trip to the land of the Vikings is an opportunity to discover two of the most beautiful islands in the country: the island of Funen (Fyn in Danish) nicknamed the garden of Denmark and Ærø, a small island with natural beaches and fairytale villages . In addition to the charming landscapes, the relatively short distances, the relief without major difficulty and the many cycling facilities make this trip accessible, exotic and relaxing .

The sea and the islands are omnipresent during your cycling trip in Denmark. Between the island of Funen, the third largest in the country and Ærø, the most beautiful island in the south of the country , you sail to discover the Danish archipelago. Along the route, unspoilt beaches lined with forests invite you to swim in the Baltic Sea . Despite the latitude, the water temperature remains pleasant, between 17 and 20°C in summer. Ideal for cooling off during a cycling stage. On the island Ærø, the seaside tracks are numerous and superb and offer you beautiful one-on-one with the Baltic Sea. Around Faaborg and Svendborg, a myriad of islands and islets provide an opportunity for timeless stops in the middle of the tides.

The city of Odense , the third Danish city in terms of population, is the place of departure and arrival of the trip. Odense is best known for being the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen , the most famous Danish novelist and storyteller, author of the Ugly Duckling , The Little Mermaid and The Little Match Girl , among others. The cobbled streets of the picturesque neighborhood where Andersen was born in 1805 lend themselves to family walks.

Nestled on the coast of the island of Funen, Faaborg, Svendborg, Nyborg and Kerteminde are small, dynamic and pretty towns whose history is intimately linked to the sea. The atmosphere is relaxed “Danish style” . Facing the sea, you can enjoy an is (ice cream) or a pølse (hot dog sausage) and drink a cold øl (beer). Skal!

The peaceful, green and wooded countryside of the island of Funen is pleasant to cycle through. Denmark is a cycling country and the facilities reflect this. You most often cycle on dedicated tracks or on small roads. The interior of the island of Funen is dotted with mansions and castles such as those of Egeskov and Nyborg which are worth a visit. Although the relief is flat overall, to the north of Faaborg the rolling hills of Fynsker Alpen (Funen Alps) culminate at 128 meters and offer a surprising setting and beautiful panoramas over the constellation of islands and islets of the archipelago of Funen.

Leasure: You occasionally or regularly ride your bike and have experience in cycling for a whole day. You enjoy discovering new territories in a leisurely way. You can ride up to 35 to 55 km a day on relatively flat routes.

Easy: You occasionally ride your bike to relax and enjoy yourself, on your own or with family and friends. The open air and the gentle transportation the bike offers are a good way to recharge your batteries. Ideal for families with children. You cycle 25 to 40 km a day on flat routes.

Arrive on your own in Odense, the main city of the island of Funen and birthplace of the famous novelist Hans Christian Andersen. Retrieve your bikes and enjoy the evening in Odense.

From ODENSE to FAABORG 55km Fit: You regularly ride and/or practice a sport. You are accustomed to traveling by bike or wish to try it out. Your physical condition allows you to cover a minimum of 45 to 70 km per day with a little bit of steep routes. ">

Departing from Odense, the capital of the island of Funen, you cycle south through the peaceful Danish countryside. Halfway through, the village of Brobyværk is a pleasant stopover for lunch and to regain strength before taking on the Funen Alps . Far from reaching the Alpine summits, the highest point peaks at 128 meters, the Funen Alps offer a landscape of undulating hills with beautiful panoramas on the archipelago in the south of the island. You will undoubtedly see sailboats, a ferry or elegant wooden boats.

You are going to discover one of the most beautiful islands in Denmark: Ærø. You take the ferry from Faaborg to the small port of Søby on the island of Ærø. Take advantage of this cruise, lasting approximately one hour, to gaze at the small islands of the archipelago.

On the island of Ærø you cycle by the sea on small roads and cycle paths. The charming landscapes encourage contemplation. Ærøskøbing is stands out by its cute cobbled streets and colorful old houses. The opportunity to immortalize some beautiful memories with your camera!

If you have the time and the inclination, Bregninge Church and the cliffs of Voderup klint are remarkable places to discover on Ærø.

At the end of the day, you embark again with your bikes. A ferry takes you to Svendborg.

You cycle along the southern coast of the island of Funen between Faaborg and Svendborg. Departing from Svendborg, you go on a short excursion to Valdemar Castle on the island of Tåsinge. Then you discover the charms of this untamed island. Neighboring Tåsinge, the small island of Thurø also lends itself to a stroll and swimming.

From Svendborg you take the northern route along the sea. Along the way you pass through small villages where you will see stalls offering honey, strawberries, potatoes or artisan creations. As you approach Nyborg, you see the Storebælt Bridge which connects the island of Funen to that of Seeland (Sjælland in Danish), on which Copenhagen is located.

In Nyborg, the town’s impressive medieval castle is worth a visit.

Denmark - Fyn - Denmark´s Romantic Heart Cycling Tour 8 Days/ 7 Nights   The island of Fyn is often referred to as the garden of Denmark. Renowned for its fruit there is so much to say about this wonderful island. Fyn is also in the centre of Denmark, making the island very accessible from both Copenhagen Airport and with the train directly from the rest of Europe. 

South of Fyn lies the archipelago with small, picturesque islands connected by ferries, offering both a break in the bike riding and also an experience of being off the beaten track where time and fastness is not that important. The landscape is really welcoming and scenic with a good variation of flat distances and gentle hills. The tour also visits the island Aeroe (Ærø), where you would take the ferry from Faaborg to Søby (Soeby), bike to Ærøskøbing (Aereskoebing) and take the ferry to Svendborg. An alternative to the ferries and the visit to Ærø is to bike directly from Faaborg to Svendborg – approx. the same distance, but saving the time and costs of the ferries.
