St. Maarten

Description.

St. Maarten offers a delightful case of split personality. Legend has it that a Frenchman and a Dutchman divided ownership of the island through a walk-off: Standing back to back, the two headed in opposite directions, walking around the island until they met. Perhaps the Dutchman paused for a refreshing brew. At any rate, the French ended up claiming 21 square miles of the island to 16 square miles for the Dutch. This lively tale says much about St. Maarten's easygoing ways. No formal boundary exists between the Dutch and French sides of the island; a simple welcome sign tells you when you cross from one country to the other. But the differences are as noticeable as the spelling of the island's name. The French spell it St. Martin. And it's this split personality that lends so much to the island's charms, including an international reputation for the finest cuisine in the Caribbean.

:) My husband and I are first time cruisers. We would like recommenda-tions for excursions at the above mentioned ports. We enjoy a relaxing walk on the beach and swimming. We would also enjoy visiting some of the shops. Is it Meagan's Bay or St. Johns? Just would like a few recommendations from those who have visited before. Thanks! We'll be sailing April 29th on the Caribbean Princess!

For first time cruisers, I guess I'd go to Megan's Bay. It's world famous and a picture postcard beach.

St. John's is definately to be experienced, but maybe save it for your next visit. There will most definately be another opportunity. I'm betting like most of us, after you've cruised once, you'll be back again and again. Since it's almost an unwritten law that ever cruise ship that comes anywhere close to St. Thomas has to stop there, you can try St. John's on another trip.

While in St. Maarten, consider the America's Cup Regatta excursion. If you are at all active, this is an experience not to be missed. When will you ever be able to tell your friends back home that you sailed in a race on an actual America's Cup Yacht. Don't miss the opportunity.

CruzNut7

I had dining companions who took the America's Cup Regatta and raved about it. I, on the other hand, having never been over to the St. Martin side took the bus tour - supposedly with photo ops (yep, if you were on the correct side of the bus cuz they were all through the bus windows) and end up at a flea market. Complete waste of time and money, so don't take that one!

My hubby and I are also on the CP on April 29th. In St. Thomas we are going on the sailboat the Winifred for a day trip snorkeling, etc. In SXM we are going to rent a car and tour the island our way. Can't wait. Counting down the days.

Hi. Welcome to cruising and Princess - you may never take another type of vacation again.:D

After numerous stops in St. Thomas, I FINALLY went to Magen's Bay in January - it's wonderful. Also finally made it to Orient Beach in St Maarten this time. It was my "beach cruise" ;) .

I did a ship's tour both times - just because - but the beach and facilities at both are awesome.

The St. Thomas tour included a short island tour and the fee at Magen's Bay. Once there you can rent loungers; there's a gift shop, bar, restrooms and take out food. I sat in the sun, the shade, walked the beach - it was great , not very crowded considering there were 3 ships in port that day. There are shops right at the Havensight pier to preuse after your time at the beach.

In St. Maarten it also included the transportation to Orient Beach, you are welcomed with a rum punch and Princess has an area set aside with loungers (umbrellas are for rent). We were served a delicious lunch (choice of salmon, ribs or chicken) and another cocktail. They also have a bar, restrooms, changing rooms and gift shops. The only annoying part of Orient Beach is the constant parade of vendors disturbing a otherwise peaceful day at the beach.

I have pictures of both excursions...follow the photo link below. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Enjoy your cruise.

Check out http://www.godfreytoursvi.com/ He's very reasonable and offers a 6 hour tour which includes 2 hours shopping, 2 hours beach time, a 2 hour tour of St.Thomas for $20 per person. We have taken this tour twice. You can take in all 6 hours or skip the shopping or beach.

A Sixth?

I am going to get a beating.

If you want to take "a day off" or have no real desires to see something.... St Thomas is the best place on a Craibbean cruise to stay on the boat.

Especially if you are on a Sun class boat stuck to the Crown Bay dock.

St T is not a very "Cruise friendly" destination, unless you have to have to have to shop. And that means shop for jewelry or over priced drink and chow :p

The beaches are crowded and average, the prices US plus, again, jewelry shopping I've heard is good, but since all ships stop here, give it a pass and stay on-board. A stroll ashore will be enough for most.

It is VERY easy and inexpensive to hop the ferry to St John and I would highly recommend it! Beautiful quiet beaches and nice quaint shops.

Crusdiva, I loved your pictures. We are going on the CB in April and are taking the same excursion in St. Maarten. I was happy to see the pic's and to hear you enjoyed yourself. Thanks.

Would have to agree with earlier poster, in that if this is your first visit, you really should do Megan's, just to get it out of your system. We've been to St.T 4x, with 5th coming up on CB in November. We did the Megan's and downtown shopping routine the first trip. We've ferried to St. John ever since. Can get any shopping "fix" at Havensight, though you miss the downtown "experience", if that means anything. Megan's is very nice, but can get extra-crowded. Check on how many/which ships will be in port with you.

As for St.M, we think the shopping is better there for jewelry/watches/etc.. If you're a beach person, do Orient. The place is a lot of fun, with plenty of sections to plant yourself for the day, great selection of bars and eateries right on the beach. Going into town on the French side was, IMHO, forgettable. Everything is terribly overpriced. Besides, it's FRENCH !!! :-O.

America's Cup is fun, but not necessarily for someone looking to chill out for the day.

Enjoy your trip, no matter what your choices. I can assure you, you'll be back. Resisted the wife for years, but finally caved in and booked one. That was eight years ago. Cruise #11 coming up this Fall.

Kerry&LuAnn

In St. Thomas, we did the "St.Thomas Scenic Drive & Mountain Top" (STT-KM). The guide was very friendly and informative, and we made several stops for breathtaking photo opportunities. We traveled along Skyline Drive in an open-air safari bus with views of nearby St. John, the British Virgin Islands, and the harbor of Charlotte Amalie as our driver recounted the island's colorful history and legends. Then we traveled to Drake's Seat for views of Magens Bay, rated one of the top 10 beaches in the world by the National Geographic Society. We continued on to Mountain Top, the highest point on the island, where we had time to browse the shops or purchase one of the world famous banana daiquiris. Continuing on to bustling Charlotte Amalie we had the choice of returning to the ship or remaining in town to browse and shop. You are then responsible for your return to the ship. We did the morning tour and enjoyed a wonderful 2 hours.

In St. Maarten, it is possible to walk from the ship dock down to the boardwalk area along the hotel/commercial stretch (about 10 minutes) and then enjoy some time on the beach at no cost. That entire stretch of beach is public even though there are hotels along there.

Thanks! Have a great time.;)

I would recommend the Champagne catamaran ride. We did the 4 hour one. It was about an hour ride to honeymoon beach, then around 1 1/2 hours to snorkel and then another 1 hour ride back. On the return trip you are served alcoholic beverages and snacks. It was awesome......

Cool Cruiser

little traveler

We did the champagne catamaran just two weeks ago via the Golden. FYI to get to the beach you have to snorkel. They do not drop you at the beach. Unfortunately we were not aware of this. The entry and exit from the catamaran to the water was too difficult for my DA who is 68 and had a double hip replacement a few months ago. So she was disappointed she could not walk the beach on St. John. It is a beautiful secluded beach. The current is pretty strong here too. So I would not recommend this excursion for people who have any physical limitations. On the up side for the people who stayed on the boat they saw a sea turtle not once but twice! Also the bar was open and the drinks were flowing!

JessH

I am palnning to take the champagne excursion in April as well.

Just to be clear, to get to the beach you have to swim a bit? but then you can relax on the beach right?

viaggiatrice

Even if you are not ACTIVE the America's cup is a blast!! I am not so active, not sedentary either- they have a job for everyone. I was the timing wench or some such thing- basically I got to sit on the side and enjoy the view and the great race!! Don't let it make you hesitate to book if you are not very active: it is great for all!!! One of my favorite tours ever!!

I am palnning to take the champagne excursion in April as well. Just to be clear, to get to the beach you have to swim a bit? but then you can relax on the beach right?

Pretty sure it is Honeymoon Beach. :) My husband and I love to snorkel and spend the day there when we stay on St. John. Unfortunately, (a please don't send hate mail my way), it is now a favorite catamaran day trip spot, so it doesn't seem as secluded. We have seen daytrippers standing on coral, kicking coral, and a man swam right over me once as if I wasn't there! Also, the captains of these boats drop anchor inside the buoys, which I wish the NPS police would bust them for. One catamaran ran right up to the beach one day and dropped people who couldn't or wouldn't swim! I wouldn't take one of these trips just on principle. Sorry if I offended anyone...it's just my two cents and nothing more.

Hornet

We're doing the 1/2 day cat sail in May and I'm not a great swimmer, but I do snorkel. Salt water is an easier swim than laps in a pool, but do they supply you with a life vest? How long does this swim take?

They do supply vests. I am not great with distances so please correct me if I am too far off - It was about 25 yards from boat to beach. The thing is there is a pretty good current here. So, swimming to the beach was harder and coming back to the boat was easy. To get into the water you can either Jump off the boat (a foot or two) or walk down the ladder. I think we counted 10 rungs on the ladder for my DA - 3 rungs in the water 7 outside the water. You must get back on the boat via the ladder.

In the end it was a fun time just not what we expected.

If you want to know what other ships are in port the day you are, go to http://www.cruisecal.com and be sure to check "other ships in port".

Thanks - little traveler.

The 4 Best St Martin All-Inclusive Resorts for 2024

St. Martin is one of the most unique of the stunning Caribbean islands . It has the usual Caribbean gems—stunning beaches, azure waters, and exciting nightlife. What it also has is two separate cultures. St. Martin, one single island, is governed by two separate sovereign countries, the Netherlands and France. There are no borders and crossing from one zone to the other is easy.

The French side offers exquisite shopping and dining (don’t bother looking for a McDonald’s here) with an elegant, somewhat dressy style. It’s also where you’ll find the best beaches.

The Dutch side, spelled St. Maarten, is somewhat livelier and more cosmopolitan with its exclusive resorts, clubs, bars, and casinos. Parents may want to be aware that beaches in St. Martin mandate clothing, while many of St. Maarten’s beaches are clothing optional .

The charm of visiting St. Martin is that it offers two vacations for the price of one

All-inclusive resorts are great for travelers who want a stress-free getaway and to enjoy an abundance of relaxation. All amenities are included and unlimited, so guests can have meals and drinks at their leisure without considering the expense. Most activities are also included in these rates. You can consider that the trip is paid for when it is booked, and most times, it includes cheaper airfare than would otherwise be available.

Best All-Inclusive Resorts in St. Martin

Sonesta maho bay beach resort, casino & spa (dutch side).

This 420-room resort by Maho Bay Beach on the Dutch side is an ideal getaway for singles, couples, and families. There are five all-inclusive restaurants (plus a pizzeria) and five bars to choose from. The mini-bars in the rooms are replenished daily, or guests can enjoy a drink at the swim-up pool bar. The resort’s spacious rooms have either a pool or ocean view.

All-inclusive dining and drinking includes an all-day buffet by the beach, several other fine eateries, and pubs. Go to La Fontana for Italian food and views of the most perfect sunset. The Latitude Bar offers drinks and 50 slot machines for gamers.

The adult entertainment has something for everyone, from trivia challenger, dance classes, poolside bingo, parties at the beach and pool, and a music program with live entertainment featuring comedians and karaoke.

Special kids and teen clubs will entertain and supervise the younger set in daily and nightly fun activities. The 4,000 square-foot Beach House is for kids between the ages of 3 and 12. It features an aqua park, slides, a pool, and a playground. Twenty-four-hour babysitting services are available. The Teen Zone is filled with electronic games, a pool table, foosball, and board games.

The tour desk can help guests find the best off-property activities, cruises, and tours. Perennial favorites include guided jet ski tours, a catamaran sail, and a rainforest adventure tour.

Book the Couples Escape package to save up to 30% off all-inclusive rates; it also includes lunch for two at Sonesta’s adults-only Azul restaurant (located at the Sonesta Ocean Point) and discounts on the resort’s romance dinner experiences. Couples can also choose from the resort’s different romantic wedding packages to create their dream wedding in stunning surroundings.

Divi Resorts (Dutch Side)

The Divi Resort is on the St. Maarten side of the island and offers an all-inclusive dining and drinking rate, with children under 12 eating and staying for free (non-motorized water sports and weekly activities are also included).

The stunning rooms and suites have a breathtaking ocean view and guests will enjoy access to the private peninsula. On-site shops offer souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry while the grocery mart carries daily necessities. The resort’s Aqua Mania Adventures offers daily cruises, scuba diving, snorkeling, and other great watersport activities, or guests can simply relax during a sunset or dinner cruise.

If you’re getting married or planning your honeymoon to St. Maarten, be sure to check out special packages that offer multi-night rates with perks or all-inclusive rates.

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort (Dutch Side)

The adult-only resort in the Dutch zone of St. Maarten has 130 suites that are fashioned in an elegant contemporary Caribbean style overlooking Maho Bay. Some top-level suites come with a personal butler, who will keep the room’s fridge filled with new wine each day.

All meals and alcoholic beverages at the resort’s three restaurants (two are exclusive to Ocean Point guests) and four bars and lounges are included in the price. The resort is thriving with activities, such as movie nights, live entertainment, bingo, pool, karaoke, and aerobics. Watersports abound, and there’s a golf course less than 2 miles from the resort.

The on-site Casino Royale is the largest gaming facility on the island, with 21,000 feet of slots, gaming tables, and a special high-roller section. Membership to the Players Club brings rebates, bonuses, comps for food, and free slot plays. There are extravagant Las Vegas-style shows every Saturday evening.

Included in the all-inclusive package are the fitness center classes in yoga and aquacise to help guest maintain their wellbeing. Check out special packages like the “Butler Suite Sale” and “The Suite Love Honeymoon” for upgraded experiences.

With all it has to offer, a stay at the Sonesta Ocean Point adds up to a getaway at St. Maarten’s most sophisticated resort. Guests of the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort have free and absolute access to the nearby Sonesta Maho Beach Resort.

Secrets St. Martin Resort and Spa (French Side)

Secrets St. Martin Resort & Spa, on the island’s French side, is the ultimate luxury all-inclusive travel destination. French elegance blends seamlessly with a casual Caribbean style.

The 258 suites feature either a partial ocean, marina, or mountain view with private terraces or balconies, a soaking tub, 24-hour room service, and a mini-bar that’s refreshed daily. Members of the Preferred Club enjoy upgraded accommodations, access to their own special lounge, and enhanced concierge services, as well as continental breakfast each day and hot and cold hors d’oeuvres every afternoon.

The resort has six gourmet dining options and five bars. Unlimited Luxury privileges include all premium wines and liquors. For couples looking for an intimate experience, book the “Romantic Dining Experience” which includes a private dinner at a special area within the resort.

If it’s not clear already, Secrets goes all out for romance. Couples can upgrade their stay with numerous couples’ packages to celebrate a wedding, honeymoon, engagement, vow renewal, or anniversary.

St. Martin: The Two-in-One Getaway

St. Martin is surrounded by the most beautiful beaches that offer the best in sailing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and other watersports. Visitors invariably enjoy day cruises for fun and romance while sunset cruises with a visit to a lively bar in St. Maarten are always popular.

Even more popular is the duty-free shopping on the island. Philipsburg, on the Dutch side, has plenty of luxury goods on display (think electronics, gold, and diamonds), especially on Front Street. The city’s motto, “Shop till you drop,” is taken seriously. Any money saved while shopping can be used inside Front Street’s Coliseum Princess Casino.

Philipsburg’s French counterpart, Marigot, takes a more laid-back approach. “Relax. The shops will remain open. Have a café au lait.” Either way, St. Martin is a shopper’s paradise.

St. Martin can be the vacation of a lifetime and staying at an all-inclusive resort can set it apart from an ordinary getaway. The all-inclusive resorts bring a level of elegance, luxury, and attention rarely found in other hotels.

Why Visit an All-Inclusive in St. Martin?

Life doesn’t get much easier. All-inclusive resorts specialize in catering to their guests and offering rare luxury, such as a 24-hour butler along with high-end accommodations. Need your shoes shined? Your breakfast served in bed? It’s a done deal.

All-inclusive resorts are hassle-free; guests just show up and have their butler arrange transportation from the airport and unpack their bags. Many of these resorts offer special romance packages for couples; safety for single travelers who don’t want to have to look for a place to eat and have fun; and fun for families, since these all-inclusive resorts usually include safe and supervised kids’ clubs that allow the parents some alone-time.

Can there be a downside to all this luxury and bliss? With all that these all-inclusive resorts offer, most guests don’t bother to venture far out. Everything they want and more is at their immediate disposal. They may, however, be missing out on some interesting local culture and that gem of a hole-in-a-wall eatery with the best food in town without that incentive to leave the resort.

One option for adventurous travelers in need of some spoiling would be to explore the sights and terrain for one week, then recover at an all-inclusive resort the next. It promises the best of two travel worlds.

Student Speed: Floors tips for Energetic Excursions on St. Maarten

  • August 29, 2024
  • St. Maarten / St. Martin Beaches Blog , St. Maarten / St. Martin Shopping Blog , St. Maarten / St. Martin Things To Do Blog

Caribbean Connaisseur Floor

For todays visitor highlight we interview Floor Bos. Bos is a law student from Groningen, the Netherlands. She has visited St. Maarten often, as well as other Caribbean islands, and knows her favorites very well.

If anything, sitting still is not something she tends to do when on island. A beach set is always ready. Her claim is to have visited at least half of the island’s 37 beaches, which gave her distinct preferences. “Though many beaches come with amenities and liveliness, which is great for some days and nights out, I prefer to go with my own crowd on others and have a more quiet beach like Little Bay or Baie Rouge / Red Bay . Just chatting with some drinks and delicacies until the sun drops into the Caribbean”.

Activities with Adrenaline (and view)

When it comes to St. Maarten excursions , she considers the Rainforest Adventure Zipline a must. Not just for the adrenaline pumping ride down Sentry Hill , but also because of the view over valleys, seas and other Caribbean islands nearby. “When you take the Soualiga Sky Explorer up, make sure to take some time to roam around all decks of the platform on top of the mountain before you take the zipline ride down. Every side has a different view. Some people tend to overlook the wooden walkway in the back, providing a great view over planes landing and departing over Maho Beach and adjacent Princess Juliana International Airport “.

Jetskiing on Great Bay Beach was an experience not to forget either. Floor explored every corner of Great Bay, from the Philipsburg Cruise Port all the way to Fort Amsterdam . As a Dutch Blonde, she could not but pop by the namesake Dutch Blonde Beer Bar on the same beach and try the local “Naughty Blonde” Cocktail in the process.

Her drive to truly experience destinations she visits led her at one time to a graduation of fellow, local students at a St. Maarten school. She recollects the liveliness of the event and the happiness of the people receiving their certificates. “A better way of celebrating compared to Europe, I find. You worked hard, you are happy you passed, so why not celebrate it to the fullest?”

Off the Beaten Track Thinking: Swimming at Night

Another fun thing to do on St. Maarten for Floor, one that not many people think of, is night swimming. The Caribbean waters remain at a highly acceptable temperature at night too, says Bos: “You might not have the sun on your face at night, but the moon and stars lighting up the water instead. A whole different experience to explore, and as the beaches are freely accassible , nothing keeps you from experiencing this”. She does advise to always do this in a group as Caribbean currents can be fierce.

Her evening activities after sundown even resulted in a prize. Her sunset photo of Grand Case made her win a contest of pictures portraying the famed Caribbean sunset on island. She is looking forward to collect her awarded Seaside Nature Park Champagne Horse Ride when she is back on island to add to her list of St. Maarten experiences.

A Medallio Shopping Quest

Shopping in Philipsburg brings back fond memories too. “I was looking for a specific, befitting medallion for my favorite aunt. There are many jewelry specialists in Front Street, so it was a grateful but time consuming task to find the best one”. She laughs when reflecting on the running in and out of stores back when, even speedier when closing time dawned. In the end, she was very content with a golden medallion she found that could open up.

In a moment of not paying attention, she was lured into the Amsterdam cafe “Red Light District” selfie gimmick , resulting in some unexpected Caribbean holiday pictures. She still remembers, but will not spoil the joke and recommends the activity as “best to find out for yourself”.
