Malta Tours & Vacations

View of Paola City from Valletta Waterfront with boats in the harbour on a sunny day in Malta

Floating smack-bang and isolated in the middle of the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, minuscule Malta trots along to a charmingly laid back pace.

A consortium of 3 bite-sized islands containing countless blue water lagoons backed by stunning surrounds, the country presents a beguiling mish-mash of Arabic and European languages, architecture, cuisine and traditions - the legacy of having been alternately raided, invaded, or occupied by virtually every Western power to have attained conquering capacities over the past 2,000 years. Little wonder then that the locals are so versed in sharing their island’s spoils with the latest foreign hordes to reach their shores.

Best time to visit malta.

Malta’s summer season - stretching from April right through to October - is the best time to visit, with daytime temperatures generally sitting in the high 60s that are tempered by sea breezes along the coast.

Over July and August, the temperatures can climb above 80 degrees F - perfect for some, unpleasant for others.

From November to March, temperatures range around 60 degrees F and it can be quite rainy in December and January.

Geography and environment

Malta’s largest island (which goes by the same name) consists of low-lying, hilly and mostly arid terrain covered by terraced fields and bounded by a rugged coastline of coves, harbors and beaches.

Gozo is noticeably greener and more densely vegetated, with craggy cliffs and flat-topped hills.

Top 5 movies shot in Malta

1. gladiator.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s historical Roman epic, charting the rise, fall, rise and death of wronged General Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) will be interested to hear that the scenes of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum were actually shot in neither. Instead, a million dollar replica of the city and its illustrious fighting stadium were constructed and filmed in Malta’s Fort Ricasoli. The film, which dominated the 73rd Academy Awards, included some brilliant scenes of Crowe doing somersaults while battling tigers.

Starring Brad Pitt and Australia’s own Eric Bana, Wolfgang Peterson’s loose adaptation of Homer’s Iliad was shot almost exclusively in Malta’s Mellieha, Fort Ricasoli and on Malta’s sister island Comino. An epic tale of wanton murder and betrayal, fueled by an illicit royal affair, the film was purportedly produced on a budget of approximately $175 million – making it one of the most expensive ever made. In a damning demonstration that people learn nothing from history, the Turkish town of Canakkale accepted Pitt's gifting of the giant Trojan Horse maquette used in the film.

3. World War Z

When a zombie outbreak threatens the planet’s very existence, United Nations worker Gerry Lane (played by Malta-crazy Brad Pitt) decides to step in. Citing inspiration from All the President’s Men and The Bourne Identity, this 'politically-penetrating apocalyptic horror film' featured scenes shot in Malta’s Valletta, Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea.

4. Orca - The Killer Whale

A captivating piece of 70s filmmaking wizardry, Orca: The Killer Whale tells the tale of a great white shark hunt gone horribly wrong. Captain Nolan, a salty Irish seadog looking to return to the country of his birth, accepts one last job to catch a great white shark for a local aquarium. But just as he is about to catch the shark, which is about to kill a canoeing scientist named Ken, a killer whale appears out of nowhere and kills the shark. Infuriated, Nolan harpoons the whale, but hits the wrong one – the whale's pregnant whale girlfriend! Understandably irate, the canny Orca bachelor now sets out laying waste to the entire fishing village; sinking boats, exploding the community’s fuel reserves, and chomping Nolan’s friend’s leg off when he attacks their seaside dwelling. The final, nail-biting scene, in which the Killer Orca lures Nolan out to the remote polar region of Labrador and sinks his boat by knocking an iceberg into it, was fabricated and filmed off the coast of Malta.

5. Swept Away

Popularly lauded as one of the worst movies ever made, Guy Ritchie’s Swept Away – starring his then-wife Madonna – marked the director’s filmmaking nadir. A right box-office disaster, the film scooped the 2002 Raspberry Awards and was the only movie ever to have won both Worst Picture and Worst remake or Sequel. What the film does have going for it is the setting, with Blue Lagoon, Vittoriosa and Mdina all featuring prominently as the stunning backdrop to the mismatched couple’s shipwrecked shenanigans.

Malta Tours Highlights & Experiences

No trip to Malta is complete without a visit to the island’s capital, Valletta. Only 1km by 600m in size, the city is packed with sites of historical significance from ancient forts and historical museums to 16 th century Baroque palaces, gardens and churches. Be sure not to miss St John’s Co-Cathedral and museum, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, or take a ferry to the Three Cities- the trio of the fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua.

Located on the North-eastern coast, Sliema is a great place to base yourself and a hub for shopping, entertainment and café life. Its main attraction is the “Sliema Front”, a 10km promenade which stretches from Ta’Xbiex and Gzira in the South to St. Julian’s in the north. The town is filled with history, most famously Fort Tigne and Stella Maris Church.

Mdina, also known as Malta’s ‘Silent City’ is a fortified city which sits on top of one of the highest hills in Malta. The ancient walled city was once the old capital through the Middle Ages and was home to some of the mostof the island’s nobility. Today, Mdina is one of Malta’s most popular attractions and home to fewer than 300 people. Some of its main sites include the Roman Catholic St. Paul Cathedral, the French Baroque Palazzo Vilhena and the Carmelite Church and Priory.

St Julian’s

St. Julian’s or San Giljan, is located north of Valletta and is mostly famous for its thriving nightlife and tourism. What was once a fishing village is now a hub for new and luxurious hotels, many different waterfront restaurants and trendy nightclubs, mostly centred in an area known as Paceville.

An authentic Maltese fishing village, located in the South-Eastern part of Malta. The relaxed village is famous for its daily open-air fish market and photogenic harbour lined with decorative painted boats called Luzzus. Some highlights of the village include the Marsxlokk church, dedicated to the Madonna of Pomeii, Fort St. Lucian which was built by order of Saint John, and the thousand-year-old Fort Tas-Silġ.

Home of the famous Blue Lagoon, Comino is a small island which sits between the main islands of Malta and Gozo. Being only 3.5 square kilometers, the island is car free and virtually uninhabited. Comino is a paradise for snorkelers, divers and windsurfers. For the more adventurous travellers, the island is ideal for camping or those who enjoy spending the day hiking.

To start with, these are a few suggestions for different types of travellers. Click (or tap) through to go down the page to a hotel’s review.

  • Location:   Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands  (on the edge of a beautiful sandy beach) |  Casa Ellul (in the heart of capital city Valletta) | Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour (Harbourside town full of character) | Corinthia Palace (Very central, in a peaceful area) | Phoenicia Malta (on the doorstep of Valletta)
  • Facilities/comfort: Rosselli – AX Privilege |  Hilton Malta  |  The Westin Dragonara Resort  |  Casa Ellul

Best hotels in Malta: Luxury

Cugo gran macina grand harbour.

View of the Cuga Gran Macina hotel from across Grand Harbour at the Three Cities, Malta.

Per night from:

Tripadvisor 4.5 star rating

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour is a unique five-star hotel located a stone’s throw away from the capital city of Valletta, offering large, tastefully designed suites with unobstructed harbour views.
  • Standout strengths: Location, service, indoor pool and rooftop amenities.
  • Location: Senglea, a harbourside town that forms part of the Three Cities. Plenty of charm and character to be found here.

Things to consider

  • If sightseeing is a priority, there are easier locations to base yourself in . Although Valletta is a 7-minute ferry ride away, other parts of the island are harder to reach, especially by car
  • Deals are hard to get , with just 21 suites, premium prices on services and add-ons and high demand.

Iniala Harbour House

Iniala Harbour House is one of the best luxury hotels in Malta.

  • Overall: Iniala Harbour House is one of the best hotels in Malta, both because of its setting and views (with balconies overlooking the sea) as well as the quality you can feel from top to bottom.
  • Standout strengths: Location, Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant on the hotel roof terrace, outstanding plunge pool, and highly attentive staff
  • Location: Iniala Harbour House overlooks the picturesque Grand Harbour facing the side of Valletta. A peaceful, charming location with suites enjoying stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Ensuite bathrooms are part of the open plan in some suites

Gets pricey, and there’s a lot of choice in this category in Malta’s capital. Rooms with sea views are worth the upgrade, however.

Palazzo Bifora

The stunning Palazzo Bifora hotel in Mdina.

  • Overall: Stunning, brand-new luxury hotel in one of the most exclusive locations in Malta (Mdina). Palazzo Bifora is a small property with less than 10 (uniquely designed) suites, set in a lovingly restored palazzo (palace)
  • Standout strengths: Location, majestic interiors and attention to detail, roof terrace and rooftop swimming pool
  • Location: At the very centre of Mdina, within its bastion walls. One of the most historically significant places on the Maltese islands.
  • Variety of suites: No two suites are the same, and each has its strengths and weaknesses, so requires a bit of thought to find the right one for you
  • A great option for couples, but no family suites available .

Lure Hotel & Spa

Spa and indoor pool at the Lure Hotel & Spa luxury hotel in Malta.

  • Overall: Exclusive, new designer hotel that offers the highest standard of accommodation in the North of Malta. Currently, one of the best stays you can book on the island.
  • Standout strengths: Personal touch of its attentive staff, stylish design and top-notch facilities (including spa and steam room)
  • Location: At the peaceful town square of Mellieħa, a quaint village known for its beautiful natural surroundings and sandy beaches.
  • Being an exclusive hotel, availability can be limited pretty much all year round. Don’t hesitate – Lure Hotel & Spa is in high demand, and for a good reason.

5-Star Hotels in Malta

These are my recommendations for officially-rated five-star hotels (that deserve their five-star certification).

Barceló Fortina Malta

Barcelo Fortina Sliema Hotel

●      Overall: After undergoing major renovation works, the Barceló Fortina Malta Sliema Hotel is one of the top contenders for a luxurious stay on the island.

●      Standout strengths: Spacious rooms with sea views, great facilities and in-house dining options

●      Location: Right in the heart of Sliema, within walking distance of The Point Shopping Mall & other shops on Bisazza Street, restaurants, beaches and amenities

  • Located in one of the busiest parts of Sliema. The hotel itself is superb, but perhaps it’s not ideal for travellers who are interested in a quiet stay away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist hotspots.
  • The hotel currently offers an accommodation-only basis. Breakfast is available at an extra charge.

Hilton Malta

The view out over the marina at the Hilton Malta - one of the best hotels in St. Julian's.

  • Overall: Part of a chain that upholds high standards. Their Malta location is no exception: A high-standard luxury hotel in a popular part of the country
  • Standout strengths: Well-designed interiors with comfortable rooms, professional and friendly staff, good restaurants on-premises
  • Location: On the edge of the nightlife centre and close to Spinola Bay, with a good choice of restaurants in the vicinity.
  • Located in a busier part of Malta. Julian’s is one of the most urban locations in Malta – far from being a traditional village
  • Great for leisure, but not the best for a more active holiday.

The Westin Dragonara Resort

Westin Dragonara Resort's hotel lounge and lobby.

  • Overall: One of the most popular luxury hotels by the sea with a well-setup fitness centre and spa facilities. Personal favourite.
  • Standout strengths: Luxury inside and out, professional and friendly staff and little left to be desired for a luxury stay.
  • Location: On the edge of the nightlife centre of Paceville, by the (quiet) seaside, with a good choice of restaurants in the area.
  • Attention to detail occasionally lacking
  • Great for a leisure stay in luxury in comfort , but not the best location for sightseeing beyond the surrounding area
  • The best views are from the 7th and 8th floors.

AX The Palace

AX The Palace Hotel lobby

  • Overall: One of the very few five-star hotels in this popular seaside resort, offering a quality stay in a quiet part of town
  • Standout strengths: Stylish interiors, friendly and helpful staff
  • Location: In the heart of Sliema, with streets lined with stately houses and full of character, away from the hustle and bustle. Close to the Sliema waterfront (great for boat trips), easy-to-reach public transport and ferries.
  • Not quite a top-notch standard for a 5-star hotel. Misses the mark on a few details. Nevertheless, they offer good value and comfortable stays at reasonable rates.

Hyatt Regency Malta

The exterior of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in St. Julian's.

  • Overall: One of the newer hotels in Malta that offers an elegant retreat in St Julian’s
  • Standout Strengths: Great facilities (rooftop outdoor pool, a luxurious indoor pool & wellness centre, as well as a superb gym), high-speed free wifi throughout, professional multilingual staff that goes the extra mile to provide you with a comfortable stay: e.g. 24/7 room service and you can also arrange airport transfers (at an extra charge)
  • Location: Right in the heart of St Julian’s: close to restaurants, beach and seaside promenade
  • If you’re interested in a stay in a quiet location, bear in mind that this property is located within a busy area with nightlife and ongoing construction works.

Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa

The Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa is located at Balluta Bay, St. Julian's.

  • Overall: Part of the international Marriott franchise and standard, this is a solid choice for comfort and luxury in a slightly quieter location in St. Julian’s
  • Standout strengths: Amenities, views of sea-facing suites and location in terms of nightlife and eateries in the area
  • Location: The seaside town of St. Julian’s, specifically at Balluta Bay, which lies on the border with another popular tourist destination: Sliema.
  • Julian’s is a more urban part of Malta , so it can get busy
  • Room rates are pricey due to high demand in the area, and value doesn’t always match.

Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands

Radisson Golden Sands hotel location and view at Golden Bay, on the outskirts of Mellieha, Malta.

  • Overall: High standard of accommodation and the perfect place to unwind close to the sea
  • Standout strengths: Location and facilities
  • Location: Sitting at the edge of Golden Bay, one of the most beautiful sandy beaches that Malta has to offer.
  • Remote location: Very little around, so unless you’re looking for a resort-type of all-inclusive stay, you’ll want to rent a car to get around. Bus stops nearby, but transit times can be lengthy.

Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz Malta

Kempinski Hotel front and pool - One of the few 5-star Gozo hotels.

  • Overall: One of the most popular hotels in Gozo that offers a comfortable stay within the island’s incredible countryside.
  • Standout strengths: Multiple outdoor swimming pools, tennis court, luxurious spa and wellness centre, comfy and spacious rooms, professional and friendly staff
  • Location: Tucked away in a rural setting in the village of San Lawrenz, away from the hustle and bustle of towns like Rabat.
  • Although you can enjoy a quiet stay at the Kempinski, bear in mind that places of interest aren’t within walking distance of the hotel.
  • The price per night can be expensive if you don’t plan ahead.

Corinthia Palace Hotel Malta

The outdoor pools at the Corinthia Palace Hotel Malta.

  • Overall: This is one of the longest-standing 5-star hotels in the Maltese islands that was built around an elegant 19th-century converted villa. Has a classic luxury feel and is a solid choice if you’re looking for something more traditional for a peaceful stay.
  • Standout strengths: Location (away from tourist hotspots), high-quality fitness centre and spa, rooms with ample space, great room service, and a superb indoor heated pool and seasonal outdoor swimming pool
  • Location: In the centre of Malta, in the village of Attard and across the road from the President’s San Anton Palace.
  • Public transport connections aren’t great in this area, so if you need to get around, consider renting a car. However, they do offer a complimentary shuttle service to Valletta.

Luxury Hotels in Valletta

Although you’ll only find a handful of 5-star-rated hotels in Valletta, there’s a much larger choice in the luxury category than just those options. They may not have all the facilities that warrant a 5-star rating, but there are a lot of choices for quality stays.

These are a few of my top recommendations. View my full list here: The Best Valletta Hotels .

Casa Ellul: Rooftop jacuzzi at one of the more exclusive Malta hotels.

  • Overall: Don’t be fooled by the 4-star rating: If you’re looking for luxury, Casa Ellul should be on your shortlist. With its comfortable, private suites, this is one of the best boutique hotels to stay in Malta’s capital city. Excellent for a peaceful break in historic Valletta.
  • Standout strengths: Exclusive small boutique hotel, personal service, jacuzzis/hot tub on your private terrace
  • Location: In the heart of Valletta – One of the few true luxury hotels within the capital city.
  • Choice of suites: The suites have very individual characters, so ask for info on and book a specific suite in advance.
  • Not an option for families , but a great option for couples.
  • Doesn’t offer facilities like outdoor pools and spas .

La Falconeria

La Falconeria Hotel Valletta

  • Overall: Combining a mix of the old and the new, La Falconeria is a tranquil hub that offers a memorable stay in the heart of the city.
  • Standout strengths: Modern interiors nestled within the old structures of the hotel, giving it a timeless feel, decent amenities (bar, small underground pool and fitness centre), and wonderful staff.
  • Location: Central location, close to main attractions and landmarks in the capital city.
  • Doesn’t offer a spa or outdoor pool, but it is still a great option to consider if you’d like to stay in Valletta.

AX The Saint John

AX The Saint John hotel foyer.

  • Overall: AX The Saint John Hotel is a modern, sophisticated luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the capital. Forms part of the AX group of hotels, which has a reputation for high standards
  • Standout strengths: Stylish interiors, spacious rooms, attentive and welcoming staff
  • Location: Central, around the corner from St. John’s Co-Cathedral.
  • Although very central, Merchants Street can get lively (and noisy), sometimes until late in the evening
  • No dining facilities on site. Breakfast is offered at the sister hotel Rosselli (a few doors down the road).

Rosselli - AX Privilege

Rosselli - One of Valletta's top 5-star hotels.

  • Overall: Part of the same chain of hotels as The Saint John, Rosselli is a great alternative at the same level of luxury. Offering more on-site facilities at a high standard, it’s one of the few five-star properties in the city
  • Standout strengths: Rooftop pool and bar, professional and personal service
  • Location: Central – a great location to base yourself in.
  • Quirky lighting system in rooms, both in terms of design as well as practicality
  • Some rooms are on the small side and do not have enough natural light.

Hotel Phoenicia Malta

The dining area at The Phoenicia Hotel Malta

  • Overall: A recent renovation has restored the shine of Hotel Phoenicia Malta , an icon among the best hotels in Malta with a five-star rating. With excellent facilities, great air-conditioned rooms, superb concierge service and a stunning garden with views, this is truly a unique place to stay.
  • Standout strengths: Classical luxury quality, excellent location, infinity pool overlooking the bastions around Valletta and Bastion pool bar, spa facilities (steam room and heated indoor pool), and attention to detail.
  • Location: On the doorstep of Valletta with views of the Grand Harbour/Marsamxett Harbour and surrounding gardens.
  • Room rates can increase dramatically with limited demand and unique location.
  • Refreshed interiors may not be to everyone’s taste .

Grand Hotel Excelsior

Grand Hotel Excelsior 5-star hotel outdoor pool.

  • Overall: Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta is a good 5-star hotel set in a unique location with a high level of comfort and good facilities.
  • Standout strengths: Location, facilities, private beach, staff
  • Location: Along the shores of Valletta’s Grand Harbour, a 5-minute walk away from City Gate.
  • Feels and looks dated in places
  • Steep walk uphill to get to Valletta’s City Gate (or 15 15-minute walk to get to the back of the city)
  • Restaurants get mixed reviews (but thankfully, there’s plenty of choice in Valletta itself).

Tips on luxury hotels in Malta

  • Although you can find a variety of 5-star resorts in different parts of the Maltese islands, opting for a boutique hotel in Valletta can be a great choice as well. Hotels in the capital have really reached a very high standard over the past decade, so they are very much worth considering.
  • If you intend to rent a car, be careful with the location and ensure that your choice of hotel offers private parking. Public parking spaces in many localities in Malta are hard to come by and the last thing you want on a holiday is encountering that kind of hassle.

Things to Do in Malta: A Complete Guide

Things to Do in Malta: A Complete Guide

Not too far south of Italy is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. A crossroad of cultures boasting towering cathedrals, epic fortresses, bustling markets, and breathtaking views… there’s plenty to discover in Malta. Whether you’re visiting for just a few days or you have a little bit longer, this article will cover how to make the most of your trip, featuring all of the must-sees as well as some little-known gems on the island. However, before we explore the top things to do in Malta, let’s run through the island’s background:

  • What language is spoken in Malta? Malta has two official languages, Maltese and English. However, over 60% of the island speaks Italian to a conversational level.
  • Is Malta part of the UK? Malta has a long history of colonisation and was most recently a British colony. Strolling through the streets of the capital you might even come across some of the iconic red telephone booths, evidence of British colonial influence. However, the country has been independent since 1964.
  • Is Malta an island? Malta consists of three main islands and some smaller islets. Malta and Gozo are the largest, and in between is Comino, the smallest.
  • Where did Malta get its name? The Greeks called it Melite, because of the abundant presence of bees. Indeed, the country is still a major producer of honey.
  • Is it warm in Malta? The climate is never too hot or too cold. In fact, it is a perfect destination for low-season travel, as the climate is pleasant even in late autumn!

Well, now you know a little bit more about the country, let’s get into what you should do while you’re there. We’re going to run through the main cities, and explore options for people of all interests, so strap in!

What to Do & See in Malta

St. john’s co-cathedral, grandmaster’s palace, barrakka gardens, national museum of archaeology, fort saint elmo, casa rocca piccola, three cities.

  • St. Paul’s Cathedral

Bastion Square

Rabat catacombs, wignacourt museum, dingli cliffs, blue grotto, popeye village, ggantija temples, fungus rock.

  • Blue Lagoon

A red telephone box in London on a cloudy evening.

We begin our exploration of Malta at its capital, which is located on the largest of the country’s three islands—also known as Malta. Valletta is a lovely compact city, meaning that it’s pretty easy to make your way around on foot. On this fantastic Free Valleta Walking Tour , you can make your way around the city’s main attractions and gain an interesting insight into the country’s fascinating history along the way. Below are the must-see sights:

A steep uphill street surrounded by old yellow stone buildings and a church at the bottom with a large dome.

From the outside, St. John’s Co-Cathedral may not blow you away with its austere architecture. However, once you enter the hallowed walls of this cathedral, you’ll be blown away by its highly decorative design. You’ll enjoy wonderfully ornate gilded arches as well as two works by Caravaggio: The Beheading of St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome Writing . Find out why the troubled artist arrived on the island in 1606.

Currently the official residence of the President of the Republic of Malta, this building was erected in 1574 under Jean de Valette, Grand Master of the Order of Malta. It is located in the heart of Valleta, in St George’s Square. There is no better place to learn about the history of the ancient order, as well as to discover the life of the man who founded Malta’s capital. Inside, you’ll find the coats of arms of the Grand Masters, the Armoury Museum, and some richly decorated rooms.

Yellow stone coat of arms with a lion and a horse on either side, surmounting a row of windows inside a patio of an old palace in the centre of Malta.

The Barrakka Gardens is a must-stop on your visit to Valletta. They are divided into two distinct sections, the Upper Barrakka and the Lower Barrakka Gardens, both of which offer fantastic views of the harbour.

It was here that the Knights Hospitaller used to take refuge in meditation—today, they remain one of the finest points in the country to take refuge and relax. The main point of interest is the Saluting Battery , an ancient cannon battery that once a day thunders over the city with a blank shot. While this cannon is now merely ceremonial, it was once an essential defence from the Ottoman Empire.

This fantastic museum is located in the Auberge de Provence , a building that once housed the Knights of Malta. Today, it is home to artefacts which date back to the Neolithic period. Special emphasis is placed on the legendary civilisations that erected the temples at the archaeological site of Hagar Qim. The excavations themselves are another must-see in Malta—check them out for yourself on this excursion to the Hagar Qim Temples & Blue Grotto Tour .

The high gardens of Barrakka at sunset with a stone terrace and a row of cannons.

Fort Saint Elmo is an incredibly imposing and beautiful structure in the city. The mighty walls overlook much of the sea and played a crucial role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 attempted by the Ottoman Empire. In this battle, the Knights Hospitaller were put on the back foot, but, against all odds, held out long enough to drive back the enemy. Today the fort houses the National War Museum , a fantastic exhibition which covers 7,000 years of Maltese history going all the way back to the Bronze.

Not far from the Fortress is this charming private residence built 400 years ago by a member of the Knights Hospitaller. Today, you can grab a ticket to the Casa Rocca Piccola to learn about its history and gain an insight into how Maltese noble families lived. Also, some of the bedrooms in the residence have been restored, so the discerning traveller to Valletta can even stay in this palace!

Close-up of part of the outer walls of St. Elmo's Fort in Valletta.

Across from Valletta’s coastline, you’ll find three impressive fortified areas: Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. These were once small fishing villages, nestled on narrow strips of land, until the Order fortified them. Today, you can explore their charming alleyways on foot and also enjoy stunning views from the sea on a boat tour around Valletta harbour. By booking the Three Cities of Malta tour , you get to experience both in one!

Sliema is the modern face of Malta, and one of the most popular to visit, lying just to the north-west of Valletta Bay. This city features a stunning promenade with picturesque views of the Mediterranean, a fantastic selection of shopping experiences, superb restaurants and much more.

Mdina and Rabat

The fortified city of Mdina was Malta’s first capital and is located a few kilometres inland, standing atop a hill. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features centuries of rich history, which have been immaculately maintained, allowing visitors to feel as though they’re stepping into the past! Meanwhile, right on its doorstep, you’ll find the stunning city of Rabat, another site of great historical and cultural value.

Aerial view of the small fortified medieval town of Mdina with domes and towers surrounded by green countryside.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

This magnificent Baroque cathedral built between 1697 and 1702 is located in the heart of Mdina. It is famous for its grandiose interior and inlaid marble floors. Directly opposite is the Cathedral Museum , which houses historical artefacts and sacred artwork.

Mdina, being built on a hill, provides fantastic views of both the Maltese countryside and Rabat and there is perhaps no better viewpoint than Bastion Square. This is a great spot to take photos and enjoy the scenery. This square is also a treasure trove of history, which is constantly bustling with tourists and locals alike.

It should also be mentioned that the mighty fortified walls and ornate gates were used during the filming of several scenes from the HBO series Game of Thrones . If you’re a big fan of the series, you’ll get even more out of this experience.

A stone bridge ending in a large ornate doorway, open inside the walls of Mdina.

St Paul’s Catacombs and St Agatha’s Crypt serve as evidence of Malta’s early Christian era. This intricate network of underground tunnels was used for hundreds of years after its construction. Nearby, you’ll find a spectacular Roman house, known as the Domvus Romana —still featuring very nicely preserved mosaics which are of the standard of those found at Pompeii, making the visit all the more worthwhile.

The Wignacourt Museum in Rabat is an important cultural and historical institution in Malta. It is named after the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, Alof de Wignacourt, who was also a patron of Caravaggio. The importance of the museum is not so much linked to the beauty of its architecture, but rather to what is kept in its vaults: the Grotto of St Paul . It seems that it was here that the saint found refuge after a shipwreck, and from here he established the first Christian settlement in the West.

A cave dug underground with grooves and bunks, lit by electric light.

5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Mdina and Rabat is the small village of Dingli. This area is renowned for the Dingli Cliffs, parts of which rise up to 250 metres (820 ft) high, making for incredible views of the Meditteranean. If you’re staying in Sliema, join us on this Mdina and Dingli Cliffs day trip to see them for yourself!

Also on the south coast of Malta, a little further south than Dingli is perhaps the most famous attraction: the Blue Grotto. Here, you’ll find a number of natural sea caves seemingly carved into a cliff reminiscent of Capri’s Blue Grotto, from which this landmark takes its name. There are several different ways of visiting this iconic site, including this day trip to the fishing village of Marsa Scirocco with a stop at the Blue Grotto . Don’t miss out!

View from above of an arch-shaped cliff over the turquoise sea and some ships entering a small opening in the rock.

Popeye Village is one of the most exciting attractions in Malta and one that is especially popular with kids. This was a purpose-built movie set for the iconic 1980’s Popeye film starring Robin Williams—since then, it has been converted into an exciting theme park. Explore the set, and enjoy the village’s game areas, which feature mini-golf, giant Jenga, water games and much more!

Gozo is the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago and also has plenty to see and enjoy. Here, you’ll find incredible natural attractions, as well as cultural activities to enjoy. In fact, the island enjoys a remarkable monumental heritage, as we’ll soon mention!

Most people make their way to the island via ferry from the north of Malta, but there are other ways of enjoying this island. If you’re short on time, consider this Gozo day trip from Sliema , which will bring you around Gozo’s most important sites and bring you back to the main island all in one day!

The highlight of Gozo’s capital is undoubtedly the fortified citadel that towers over the city. We suggest you climb to the top and admire the landscape from the top of the fortified walls. The city also treats visitors to the little jewels of Baroque art that are its churches. There are many in Gozo, but especially inside Victoria, which residents still call Rabat, its original name.

A narrow yellow stone alley on a sunny day.

A highlight of any visit to Malta is a visit to the Ggantija Temples. Here, you’ll find the remains of one of the oldest religious complexes in the world— incredibly, even older than Stonehenge. The complex consists of two adjacent temples surrounded by round walls. What is impressive is the size of some of the stone blocks, which can weigh several tonnes. This is why the site has been called the ‘temple of the giants’ or ggantija in Maltese.

If you love the sea, you can’t skip the fishing village of Xlendi. On the southwest coast of Gozo, Xlendi Bay is just a 20-minute drive from the Gozo Ferry Terminal. Once reserved for women only, it has now become a popular holiday destination. Take a dip at any one of the crystal-clear beaches at the bay, explore the area’s natural caverns or enjoy watersports!

Another filming location of the Game of Thrones series, it was here that the wedding between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen took place. In the scene, Fungus Rock can be seen in the background in Dwerja Bay. From Dwerja, you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea surrounding Gozo.

A rectangular-shaped bay with a few buildings overlooking the water and a moored boat in the foreground.

The Blue Lagoon

Our list of the top spots in Malta ends with the smallest of the three main islands of the Maltese archipelago. Despite Comino’s size, tourists flock to this island in search of what is probably the bluest and clearest water in Malta. The lagoon is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving, with the clear water providing the perfect view of the sea creatures which live beneath!

To discover the Blue Lagoon for yourself, book this Gozo & Comino Islands cruise which includes a stop at the Blue Lagoon, during which you can take some time to go for a swim and snorkel in this prime location.

There you have it, the top things to do and see in the beautiful country of Malta. Despite its size, there really is a lot more to see in this beautiful country. So, be sure to check out more tours & experiences in Malta with Civitatis to complete your itinerary and to make the most out of your trip.

Jane's Addiction Cancels Tour After Onstage Scuffle Between Lead Singer And Guitarist

Kelby Vera

Senior Reporter

5 star tours malta

Jane’s Addiction has canceled the remainder of their tour after singer Perry Ferrell threw a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro during a concert over the weekend.

The alt-rock legends, known for the songs “Jane Says” and “Been Caught Stealing,” announced they were pressing pause on their reunion in a statement on social media Monday morning.

Addressing “all the fans,” the note said, “The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group.”

“As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour,” it went on.

Fans were told refunds for their tickets would be on the way before the band signed off with a thank you.

After the announcement, Navarro and fellow band members Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins voiced serious concerns for Ferrell’s “personal health and safety” in a joint statement on social media .

It read, “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour.”

“Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.”

“We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”

“Our hearts are broken,” the statement ended.

Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro (left) and Perry Farrell (right) perform in Dublin, Ireland, on June 28. The band announced they were canceling the rest of their tour on Monday, days after lead singer Ferrell threw a punch at his guitarist on stage in Boston.

Later on Monday, Ferrell admitted that he was in the wrong in a statement to Billboard.

“This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

On Friday, concertgoers witnessed Ferrell get aggressive with the band’s guitarist during a show in Boston.

In the incident, which both fans and music journalists shared online , an angry Ferrell appeared to confront Navarro as they began to play their song “Ocean Size.”

As Navarro tried to keep Ferrell at arm’s length, the singer threw a punch at him, prompting the rest of the band and several crew members to step in and separate the pair.

Following the scuffle, Jane’s Addiction posted an apology to their fans and announced they were canceling their Sunday show in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

“We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night,” read a statement shared to the band’s Instagram story on Saturday.

Conflict between Jane’s Addictions members and collaborators is nothing new.

Addressing the band’s tense dynamic back in a since-archived 2011 interview with Vanity Fair, Navarro said the violence between him and Perry was “definitely not something I’m ever nostalgic about.”

This July, HuffPost published an essay by former Jane’s Addiction collaborator and Ferrell’s ex-girlfriend Casey Niccoli, where she detailed the dysfunction within the group and how her creative contribution to the band was later erased from its history.
