Crunchy as a drive, transparent as a pre-amp, excellent at both.

Walrus Audio's Voyager overdrive is a common sight on many boards today, with good cause. This versatile low gain overdrive has many applications, and limiting yourself to only one can be difficult. As an overdrive on a clean amplifier it has a bright crunch while adding its own color to it, however finding unity gain can prove tricky if you are playing in a low volume situation. I find it excels at taking a tube amplifier right on the verge of break-up over the edge, into harmonic saturation that you'll have a hard time disliking. Hand made in Norman, Oklahoma, the Voyager is built like a tank and ready for the road.

Most transparent Overdrive I have ever heard.

I was at local store when the sales staff was playing with the Voyager that someone sold to the store. I don't think I have ever heard a Overdrive that was so transparent. It is on the wish list should I ever come across one again.

My first overdrive and my last. Haha nah it won't be my last but it does a lot well.

L’avis de l’équipe : La Walrus Audio Voyager est une pédale d’effet s’inspirant de la légendaire Klon Centaur. On ne va pas se mentir, cette pédale fait rêver. Mais sur le marché de l’occasion elle coûte une fortune. La Voyager arrive donc à point nommé !

Cependant, bien qu’inspirée de la légendaire Klon, la Walrus apporte tout de même sa touche. Il s’agit d’une pédale d’overdrive transparente jusqu’à la mi-course de son potard de gain. Dans cette zone, vous pourrez vous en servir comme Boost/Treble booster. Au delà de la moitié, la pédale apporte une légère couleur, notamment dans les Hi-mids. Et c’est ici son point fort.

Il est possible de retrouver les sonorités de la Centaur mais tout en rajoutant une certaine personnalité. En terme de gain, la Walrus Audio Voyager est capable d’aller “relativement” loin pour une pédale low gain. Ne vous attendez cependant pas à du High Gain.

Mais là ou elle révélera tout son potentiel, c’est surtout sur un canal déjà saturé.

Une pédale d’effet d’occasion en très bon état et vendue avec sa boîte d’origine.

Mit dem Walrus Audio Voyager hat der amerikanische Hersteller ein Preamp/Boost-Pedal im Sortiment, das mit der klassischen Dreierkette an Regelmöglichkeiten für Overdrive-Pedale, nämlich Volume, Tone und Gain ausgestattet ist. Der Hersteller verspricht uns einen dreckigen Overdrive-Sound mit sehr guter Klangübertragung und dynamischer Ansprache auch bei hohen Zerrgraden.

Die Pedale von Walrus Audio haben sich bisher bei unseren Tests überwiegend als charakterstark und immer leicht abseits von Mainstream präsentiert, und wir sind sehr gespannt, wohin die Reise mit unserem Voyager gehen wird.

Gehäuse/Optik

Wie üblich bei Walrus Audio ist auch der Voyager Overdrive optisch liebevoll mit einer Grafik auf der Oberseite gestaltet – dem Thema Raumfahrt entsprechend strahlt uns eine russische Sojus entgegen. Das Pedal selbst ist mintgrün lackiert und kommt im soliden Metallgehäuse mit den Maßen 66 x 126 x 57 mm (B x T x H) und einem Gewicht von 269 Gramm.

Die Anschlüsse für Gitarre und Amp sind an den Seiten angebracht, rechts der Input und auf der linken Seite befindet sich der Ausgang in Richtung Verstärker. Der Voyager kann, wie sämtliche Walrus-Audio-Pedale, nicht mit Batterien gespeist werden, ein zusätzliches Netzteil (9 Volt, Center Negative) ist daher nötig. Den Anschluss dafür findet man an der Stirnseite. Das Pedal hat allerdings keine hohe Stromaufnahme, der Hersteller gibt 20 mA an, gemessen wurden beim Test lediglich 14 mA. Das ist kein hoher Wert, den man bei der Verwendung eines Multi Netzteils mit einkalkulieren müsste. Von der Verwendung von Daisy Chains wird abgeraten.

Die Oberseite ist mit den Schalt- und Regelmöglichkeiten ausgestattet, zum Spieler hin der obligatorische Fußschalter (True Bypass) mit der darüber liegenden Status-LED. Die Regler sind im Dreieck angeordnet, mit schwarzen Potiknöpfen und weißen Markierungsstreifen, die auch bei spärlicher Bühnenbeleuchtung noch gut sichtbar sind.

Unser Testkandidat kommt in Standardbestückung mit den Reglern Volume (Lautstärke), Tone (Klangfarbe) und Gain (Zerrgrad), wobei laut Hersteller die Regelwege leicht unterschiedlich gestaltet sind. Beim Tone-Regler handelt es sich um eine Höhenblende, die bei niedrigen Einstellungen die Bässe leicht anhebt. Auch die Einstellung des Gain-Reglers hat Einfluss auf die Klangfarbe und wirft bei niedrigen Settings einen leichten Overdrive-Sound aus, der im weiteren Verlauf immer aggressiver wird. Ob es auch tatsächlich so interessant klingt, erfahrt ihr gleich im Praxisteil.

本機の一番の魅力は、フルテンにしても音の核が潰れないという事です。 カバーできる音域が広いという事は、OD選びにはよくあるポイントですが 歪み単体で明瞭な歪みを得るには一苦労するはず。

音核の明瞭さと豊か且つ滑らかな音質は、JC120などのトランジスタに繋いでも チューブアンプと聴き違ってしまう程。 推奨設定は、gainが12時～14時程の設定、toneが14時～15時程の設定。 ツマミ自体ではあまり歪ませ過ぎずに、トーンをやや強めに設定。 歪みの裁量をピッキングに委ねます。

通常ややクランチ寄りな出音を作っておき、少し強く弾いた際に 「トーンで歪む」様な感覚値を保っておく事で、プレイヤーやギター本体の 持ち味を殺す事無く、信号音とのバランスを保てるでしょう。 本機はシングル、ハムバッカー共に良好な相性を持ち、濃すぎず、薄すぎずの 「おいしい」ODと言えます。

empresse effects販売のParaEQなどを前段に置き、セッティングの状況によって強調されにくい音域を調整しておけば、更に解像度の高い全弦の良好な分離感、音抜けを保つ事が出来るので、併用がおすすめ。

近年発売されているアナログ風味のドライブは多数ありますが、 どうしてもハイファイさが垣間見えてしまい、アナログ趣向のユーザーには NG。その中でも本機が群を抜いて好評なのは、無駄とも思える独特のクセを残した絶妙なサウンドデザインの故。

音域のふり幅が広いといっても本機はやや中音重視ですので、同社販売のMayflower(OD/ハイ抜け担当)やJupiter(FUZZ/ボトム担当)と併用して、上下を完璧に固める使い方もありです。

冒頭で述べたフルテン設定においては、優しいピッキングであれば歪みが出過ぎる事は無く“gainを回した分”＝“コンプをかけた分”と考えても良いでしょう。 深くなった音芯を激しいピッキングで引き出す、場面に応じて順応な機材です。
