On Saturday Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Chase Masterson will participate in Creation Entertainment’s second Star Trek virtual panel . We thought it was a good time to check in with Chase to talk about the event, get her thoughts on her time playing Leeta, and find out what she has been up to.

You have already done a virtual con. Do you see advantages to doing it online?

I see great advantages to virtual conventions. They are accessible to everyone. To those who live in places that don’t get Trek conventions or can’t afford to travel, this is a fantastic way to connect with the stories and actors you love. It is a powerful way to connect with other fans that share your interests. It is important to keep our social connections alive during this period. I applaud Creation for launching these series of events.

Are you embracing virtual cons as a new normal or stopgap during the quarantine?

The greatest thing about convention experiences is being able to connect with fans and them being able to connect with us. In this new era, this is the closest we can come to that in-person experience. It is very powerful. We still get to know fans personally. We get to answer questions. We have a lot of fun, and I think this contact is more important than ever because our worlds have all gotten so much smaller. But ultimately, I believe conventions will be back even stronger when it is safe. Being there in person is a lot of fun for all of us.

Chase Masterson will be online Saturday for a Creation Virtual Fan Experience panel

Let’s turn back to the ’90s. When you got the call to appear in “Explorers” in the third season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , were you given any indication Leeta would be a recurring character?

I had no idea whatsoever. They told me it was possibly recurring, but they say that a lot, partly so they can get more actors interested in these roles. But at that point in my career, I would have been fine with just four lines in one episode, especially on a show as fantastic as Deep Space Nine . I am eternally grateful they gave Leeta the run that I had, as well as the character arc and depth of changes. I could not be happier.

You actually got the first call to be back within a month for “Facets,” was that a clue there was more to come?

When I saw that I was playing one of Dax’s hosts I felt there was a chance could be coming back because Dax and her hosts were such a powerful ongoing theme in the series. But especially when they had more scenes with Leeta and Bashir I realized this was something that can really last. Then when they put me with Rom, it felt great. It felt secure. Leeta and Rom were the Lucy and Ricky of Star Trek, and a much needed lighter storyline within the context of war and a lot of other pain on DS9.

Did you have much instruction or information on who Leeta was or a backstory to influence your performance? Did you make up your own?

I did make up my own. I think there were some things in the script regarding Leeta being a Bajoran war orphan. But there wasn’t a lot of backstory and that is okay. There were so many recurring characters, it was difficult for the writers to make the world any more full or detailed than it already was. It would have been great to have a little more context for Leeta and a little more grit and depth as the series progressed. But as it is, the character arc was brilliant and very indicative of the hope of Star Trek to go from being a lowly Dabo Girl, and a Bajoran at that, to being the wife of the Grand Nagus. I’m happy.

Did they ever explain what the rules of Dabo are? Do you know?

There are no rules for Dabo. It is not a real game and I have to say, Paramount dropped the ball on this one. I think they should have created a game. I still think they should. It would go over like gangbusters at conventions and on cruises.

DS9 had a lot of strong women characters, as has Star Trek in general. Leeta got to show this as well, especially in episodes like “Bar Association.” But while DS9 never had Kira or Dax in catsuits, you and other Dabo Girls did wear some rather risqué outfits. Did you ever have any issues with that or was it something you embraced?

I completely embraced it. It was a way of getting attention to incredibly important scenes. Leeta was brought in initially for sweeps week. These outfits were meant to be eye candy quite frankly. But when you look at the themes of how powerfully compassionate Leeta was, like how she stood up for justice for the “Bar Association.” And how she truly loved the guy who was only pretty on the inside and saw potential in him so much so that she wouldn’t sign a prenup because she was determined for their love to be forever. All of those things are part of Leeta, which is why they kept bringing her back. It wasn’t for the skimpy outfits anymore, those were just a way to draw attention to the rich and vital themes that Leeta was a part of.

The outfits did get less skimpy over time.

They did because I became a wife and mother. Leeta was always meant to be not the trashy Dabo Girl, that some of them were quite frankly. Leeta was meant to be a more demure Dabo Girl, sort of working her way through nursing school or something.

The Dabo Girl with a heart of gold?

Some of the actresses who have worked on Star Trek have talked about what it felt like to have their hair and their look scrutinized by the proverbial guys in suits. Did you ever experience that kind of thing?

I didn’t feel scrutinized. But, there have been times throughout my life in Star Trek that I felt – I have really never said this before – I felt taken way less seriously than had I been the same actress in a suit. I felt often that I wasn’t seen as a serious actor. I actually had one actor apologize to me for underestimating me because he didn’t know I had done Shakespeare. My first professional job was playing the lead part of Helena in a Midsummer’s Night Dream when I was 18 years old. I did feel frustrated that way, but only among certain people. But I have also realized I have nothing to prove. I know who I am. I know the actress that I am and am certainly way more than just Leeta the Dabo Girl. And that extends to my work in my real life as well.

So, you feel satisfied with Leeta’s arc over the seasons?

I do feel very satisfied and grateful. Could Leeta have been smarter and more savvy and more gritty? Absolutely. Could I have walked into that and carried it? Absolutely. Am I thrilled with what I got? Absolutely, because Deep Space Nine was one of the best shows ever written and to be any part of that is incredible.

Last year we lost two of your DS9 co-stars. Can you share any thoughts about Aron Eisenberg and René Auberjonois?

Thank you. Aron was wonderful. He was such a jokester and so incredibly light-hearted and fun. And that went from his days as Nog on set to every interaction with the fans. I sat next to Aron for many years at conventions and seen first-hand how full of life he was, and how gracious and kind and personal he was with fans. He really was an actor who has given huge parts of himself, both on-screen and off.

René, he was such an incredible actor that meant so much to so many people for so long. It is a huge loss to Star Trek, and I know for his family and friends as well. René loved life and truly appreciated the fans and raised so much money for Doctors Without Borders, that was a huge passion of his. I am so sorry he is gone.

A couple of years back you returned to Star Trek to voice not just one, but two Leetas for Star Trek Online . What was it like for you, and any chance for more?

Virtual Leeta and Mirror Universe Leeta are both so much fun. I absolutely loved playing Mirror Leeta because she is so deliciously evil. She would eat the Borg Queen for breakfast and come back for seconds. She is ruthless and selfish and everything regular Leeta is not. It is really fun to get into that character and to realize the depth in that people are only that vicious and selfish out of fear. So, it really is a multi-layered character that is fun to get into.

I love Star Trek Online because it is more Deep Space Nine . People always ask if there is going to be a movie or any chance for a reboot and we have to say no, we knew that when the show wrapped. But with Star Trek Online you get more Deep Space Nine , whether it is Leeta, Mirror Universe Leeta, or actually a third character which is Holo-Leeta. I love reprising this character and it is great to see how popular it is with fans. And Star Trek Online is a game you don’t have to pay to play, it’s free. I want to urge everybody to go in and look around and walk the promenade and see the characters, just for the artistry of it all. It is extremely detailed and beautifully done. And a lot of fun.

More recently you did voice work on Mark Altman’s CW sci-fi show Pandora , playing the ship’s computer. Were you influenced by Majel Barrett’s work as the computer voice from the 24 th century Star Trek shows?

Yes! It was completely influenced by that. In fact, Mark has said that was part of his thinking in casting me in Pandora . The show has a lot of throwbacks to science fiction and this role with me is something he did purposefully. It is so much fun. It was just going to be one little thing but once we got into the studio, I was able to give this computer voice a lot of sass and savvy and imbue her with a jaded and sometimes snarky and sometimes compassionate personality. So far I have been in nine episodes and I am excited to see what is ahead.

Voice work, including animation, Doctor Who audio, and more has become a bigger part of your life in the last decade or so. Do you almost prefer working in the booth as opposed to under the hot lights on set?

The voice work fell in my lap. I didn’t go looking for any of these jobs. I didn’t even have a voice-over agent until recently. I do love doing voice work. You don’t even have to wash your hair! [laughs] But at the same time, TV and film and theater are where my heart lives.

Can you talk about any projects you have recently done or are going to do?

There are two that are shot in the can, which couldn’t be more different. One is called Manipulated , and I am a lead in that playing the highly ambitious ringleader of a group of women on trial for murder. The other is called Skipping Stones , and that is a beautiful drama set in the ‘90s that has to do with extremely relatable family issues where I play an overprotective, broken mother.

Since last year’s release of What We Left Behind, there has been more clamoring for DS9 in HD. Have you heard anything about that?

I have heard nothing. I know there was a concerted effort. I know that fans would make it worth CBS’ while financially. But I don’t know anything. I do know from polls we do at conventions that Deep Space Nine gets more than its fair share of the audience. Even though classic Trek and Next Gen hold solid places in people’s hearts and the excitement for Discovery and Picard are really on fire, I think people keep going back to Deep Space Nine because of the power of the storylines.

Have you seen a big uptick in interest in DS9 since it has been available for streaming?

It has grown in popularity since streaming grown. This is something Ira Steven Behr predicted as far back as the fifth season of DS9. He could see the way the Internet was starting to bloom and that streaming was going to be a thing. He knew people would be more attracted to the show when they had the ability to binge-watch it. It was a show that had a huge amount of respect for its audience. It challenged its audience. It relied on its audience to watch every episode in order, unlike The Next Generation or The Original Series, and take one episode out of context and you wouldn’t really have missed the point of the episode. Deep Space Nine you had to keep watching, and it was brilliant that Ira could see that coming and the courage and wonderful audacity to challenge the audience in that way.

Have you been watching Picard ?

I have seen a few and what I saw I absolutely loved. I think the new cast members are exceptional. I think they are all putting in amazing work.

We have seen a few characters from the 24th-century Trek shows on Picard , what do you think Leeta is up to in 2399?

I think Leeta is a leader of a social justice movement like Fereginar has never seen! She is the Michelle Obama of Ferenginar, standing up for the marginalized and making sure everyone has a seat at the table.

Let’s pivot to talk about the charity you founded, Pop Culture Hero Coalition . What is the group doing to help out during this COVID-19 pandemic?

I am proud to say we have completely adapted our work in schools and are making it available to children, teens, and adults free of charge. “The Heroic Journey at Home: Mental Health During COVID-19” is available on our website, popculturehero.org . When we saw how many people will be coping with isolation, we knew we had to do something. Isolation is hard enough itself, but the way that it severely exacerbates depression, anxiety, loneliness, fear, shame, family conflict, and other serious issues is an extremely serious thing. I feel strongly that mental health support should be available for free. It is something that we all need. I am extremely grateful for a powerhouse team to create and now recreate this program.

Interview: Author Derek Tyler Attico On Exploring Star Trek’s Utopia In ‘The Autobiography Of Benjamin Sisko’

“DS9 never had Kira or Dax in catsuits”

WHAT? Dax wore a skin-tight outfit in every episode, and she was dressed as a dominatrix in the mirror universe episodes. Meanwhile, the show kept finding reasons to show off Jadzia’s curves, including putting her in a bikini. So the above line is absurd, especially where Kira is concerned.

The Modern Star Trek shows like Picard don’t do the catsuits or skin-tight outfits anymore and thank God for that.

The media needs to stop sexualizing women. There should be positive body image. We don’t need that in our society.

Sex is good.

Love Sex Fight Sexism. Nuff said.

Never heard of her before.

I’m watching Deep Space Nine on Netflix and it’s pretty decent. Not my favorite Star Trek show but I like it.

Benjamin Sisko is the best captain since Picard and Kirk.

Just wait until you get into Season 4-5…after that, enjoy the ride. The best scripts/episodes of ALL Star Trek, the amount of recurring characters, and the connection they have with the whole crew, its outstanding.

where you at? season 1 good building blocks… wasteful episodes… season 2 stronger… especially the opening arc… 3 solid and starts building the core of the series then BAM! season 4-5-6-7 best trek ride. story asrcs never done before. perfect for streaming. unfortunately they still are forced to do stand alone episodes but fewer and fewer each season until 7 when they end on a 10 episode arc.

tom riker I’m at season 1 and it was hard to watch at first. Star Trek typically has a lame season 1 but there is room for improvement.

Kira and Dax are my favorites. Absolutely love Bashir and Nog. Odo is also great.

I’m a TNG kind of guy but DS9 is fantastic Star Trek.

You’re going to love DS9 starting around season 3. After that, it’s an AMAZING show, easily the best Trek series to date.

It’s already been said but you are only at the beginning of a very amazing show my friend. DS9 only gets better and better every season. The first two seasons (oddly like a lot of Star Trek) are its weakest but still plenty of good stories there. But season 3 is when it really gets going and season 4 when Worf arrives is when the show comes into its own. Seasons 5-7 is just epic Star Trek because thats when the Dominion war really kicks in.

But besides that arc, there are just so many amazing episodes that have nothing to do with that and just brilliant stuff on their own. I rewatched the entire show last year for the fifth time when the documentary was released and its still fantastic.

And all the cast is great. Thinking about it, its amazing that so many great characters are not introduced until later. There are a good dozen or so side characters like Leeta that isn’t introduced until third season and on but stays through the rest of the show and reshaping it in ways you don’t see coming.

I’m always jealous of people who is watching Star Trek as a whole for the very first time but DS9 is the best show to binge because both its story and character arcs are so amazing and sadly no other show comes close to it in that way.

Kira wasn’t in a catsuit? In what show was that?

In the Mirror Universe Episodes, There were 6 episodes. Starting in season 2. Nana Visitor looked very good!!

I’ve thought for a while now that they should bring Vienna Salvatori into the actual live action Doctor Who TV show; have her in an episode with Jack Harkness & let them play off each-other.

Whatever Happened To Chase Masterson, ‘Leeta’ on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?

By Nick Lee | December 9, 2022

Chase Masterson - Star Trek Deep Space Nine

Chase Masterson is actress and singer who is best known for her breakout role as ‘Leeta’ on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Chase Masterson was born Christianne Carafano in Colorado Springs on Feb. 26, 1963. Her father was in the army, so her family moved around a lot.

As a child, she lived in West Haven, CT and Germany. They finally settled in Texas when she was in the 6th grade.

Chase mentions that while growing up she was never known as ‘the pretty girl’, she was more known as the bookish and smart girl. She won spelling bees, got really good grades, but was never popular. She didn’t have her first date until she was 19 years old and she never attended football games or the prom or any of the other high school experiences.

Chase says she grew up around the theater because her mom was an actress and also a theater director and that she did her first play when she was only five years old. She would continue to working in the theater throughout high school and would often work in theater programs at universities. She reveals that she has always wanted to be an actress growing up and that she didn’t necessarily want to become famous or anything, but just a well respected working actress.

Acting Career

Masterson became passionate about acting at an early age. She landed her first major role in 1994 appearing as Ivy Lief on General Hospital. She went on to appear on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from 1995 playing Bajoran Dabo girl Leeta.

The actress was fortunate to appear on an episode of ER that went on to win and Emmy. The plot line revolves around George Clooney’s character, Dr. Doug Ross.

Ross is on his way to a fundraiser after getting off work at the ER when he’s approached by a boy who asks the doctor to save his brother whose stuck in a flooded culvert. He becomes a local hero when a news helicopter films part of the rescue.

Masterson plays Mrs. Philips in the episode. She is the mother of a patient in the hospital and is part of a side plot to the main story.

Chase Masterson Sliders

The actress also appeared on an episode called Season’s Greetings on the TV show Sliders. The science fiction and fantasy show followed a group of travelers as they slid between parallel universes via a wormhole.

In the Season’s Greetings series, the sliders visit a universe in which people are forced to spend excessively at the mall during the holiday season or spend their lives as retail sales slaves.

In the episode, Masterson plays Kelly, the sister of Wade ( Sabrina Lloyd ), an inadvertent accomplice to the scheme. The sliders must restore the meaning of the holiday and reunite Wade and Kelly with their father.

Chase Masterson TED Talk

The actress has done her own Ted Talk titled “How to Be More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine. She discusses her experience with online harassment and how it changed her. She also discusses her role as the founder and CEO of Pop Culture Hero Coalition which aims to end bullying, racism, misogyny and other social injustices.

Chase Masterson Google Talks

Masterson also discussed her experiences with stalking and threats and how they led her to start her non-profit on Talks at Google.

Pop Culture Hero Coalition

In 2013, Chase started the Pop Culture Hero Coalition with author Carrie Goldman to help bring an end to bullying, racism, misogyny and social injustice.

‘We work in schools comic-cons and communities and children’s hospitals, basically teaching empathy and teaching resilience and healthy identity and teaching conflict resolution and the great thing about it is all of these stories that we love are portals to understanding um how to be better humans .’

It uses stories from movies, comics and TV to teach how real-life heroism can overcome bullying and benefit mental health. It follows the ‘Heroic Journey Curriculum’ which encourages a healthy identity, empathy and resilience.

Homeboy Industries

Chase’s philanthropic work does not stop at her charity. She has also mentored young men and women coming out of gangs in a partnership with Homeboy Industries. She helps them overcome oppression by assisting them in finding jobs, counseling programs, parenting classes and more.

Masterson was involved in a lawsuit following a stalking incident. She sued the dating service  Metrosplash (formerly Matchmaker.com) when they refused to move a fictitious profile one of their customers created of her using her home address, telephone number and four photos of her.

The profile caused her to receive a series of unwanted communications. The judge ruled against Masterson stating that the crime was the responsibility of the creator and not the service.

Family Life

In addition to leading a stellar career, Masterson also has one son, Jeremiah Carafano, who is listed on IMDb as an actor. Although she does not reveal who his father is, she has hinted of a strained relationship in a previous Father’s Day Twitter post.

Leeta has her own Deep Space Nine action figure. Chase said her fan club started a letter writing campaign to Playmates and they relented and released her own action figure. They have gone on to become a collectors item, as only 30,000 figures were released.

Masterson Talks Reprising Leeta

star trek wiki leeta

Star Trek Online , the free-to-play online role-playing game based in the iconic Star Trek universe, is thrilled to reunite 12 of the original cast members from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for the new PC expansion, Victory is Life . Joining the crew aboard the infamous space station is Chase Masterson, reprising the role of Leeta, former Bajoran Dabo girl and wife to Ferenginar’s Grand Nagus, Rom. The Star Trek Online team had a chance to sit down with Chase after her recording session at Cryptic Studios to talk about her return to the game -- Captains may remember her as Mirror Universe Leeta in Season 11: New Dawn --  and the incredible work she’s been doing with her anti-bullying organization, Pop Culture Hero Coalition.

STO: Welcome back to Star Trek Online , Chase. Thank you for joining us. What is it like returning to the character of Leeta to see how she’s grown?

star trek wiki leeta

Chase Masterson: I really value the opportunity to do this. Part of the reason why is that I get to show a really more mature Leeta. I get to walk in the shoes of a woman who has been in charge of an entire empire with Rom, for nearly 20 years now. She’s someone who has definitely grown and come into her own. That was something I felt like I really wanted to do for a long time now. We saw quite a lot of that on the show, but here we see a Leeta who has grown into her own shoes.  She’s become an intelligent woman, a strategic thinker who is still very much adoring of her husband, but is able to walk beside him in a way that is extremely valuable.

STO: One of the interesting things about the character of Leeta is that she started off as more of a comic relief figure and then grew over the course of Deep Space Nine . What was it like playing a role like that?

star trek wiki leeta

It was really interesting because a lot of people did see Leeta as eye candy. I’m grateful to say that she was in all the sweeps week episodes in that catsuit, and I think that was certainly one of the reasons why. But you have to credit our amazing writing team under the direction of Ira Behr for her growth and René Echevarria, who created Leeta; she was never just a Dabo girl, she was never just eye candy and they always had more of a vision for her than that. They had a vision of a woman who was very compassionate and knew how to stand up for justice.

This is a woman who was more than what she looked like. That is such a Star Trek message. It’s what Leeta sees in Rom. He’s not just a book you can judge by his cover, he’s so much more. And that speaks to us in a way that is very important. We are not just what the world sometimes sees, we are so much more. It’s a very solid message of being a hero for yourself and other people.

STO: Even after all these years, Deep Space Nine still resonates with so many. Why do you think that is?

Ira Behr told us during our fifth season that he thought this was a show that was going to get more popular with time, rather than less. Now that shows can be streamed, people can watch the show in a way that is not as haphazard as it was before. Deep Space Nine was so groundbreaking in terms of it being one of the first serialized shows on television and that’s very much thanks to Michael Piller and of course, Ira Behr. I think this may have intimated fans initially. The show trusted its audience but also demanded a lot. We wanted you to get immersed in the storyline so you tune in every day. Now that’s possible and we see new audiences every day.

STO: Today you were one of the first to check out the Deep Space Nine space station in our new expansion, Victory is Life . What did you think?

star trek wiki leeta

First of all, Quark’s Bar is just amazing. I want to just go there, and damn it, I want to play Dabo! I want to be one of the players. It’s just such a fun place to be. The atmosphere is perfect. I can hear the music as you take me down that promenade. It just feels like home.

STO: Is it weird seeing Deep Space Nine as a fully realized 3D space?

It really is. When we did the show, we really couldn’t just walk around Deep Space Nine , because part of it was on Stage 4 and some of it was on Stage 7. It was always in pieces for us. This is actually the most cohesive look at Deep Space Nine . This is the answer when fans ask if there will be a Deep Space Nine movie. Unfortunately not, but this is in place of it. The continuation of these stories, it’s really incredible.

STO: We wanted to ask you about the anti-bullying organization you started, Pop Culture Hero Coalition. Can you tell us a little more about how you got started?

star trek wiki leeta

I heard about a little girl who was bullied for liking Star Wars . She was a little girl in Evanston, Illinois and the boys were following her around school saying “You can’t like Star Wars , you’re a girl.” Her mom Carrie Goldman asked if any women who like Star Wars or science could encourage her daughter. Hundreds of us responded telling her, “I love science. I love science fiction. Katie, you be you.” I was one of the ones who responded and so we kept in touch.

Carrie decided to write a book to end bullying because she saw what a huge issue it was. It’s called “Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs To Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear” and I highly recommend it. She asked me to help get her book into Comic Con and that’s when it all came together for me. I said, “Yes, let’s get it into Comic Con, but let’s do more. Let’s form a coalition to get every fan of Star Wars, Star Trek and all the other genres together with social justice organizations and end bullying.” So forming this intersection between pop culture and social justice, leading people to be the heroes we see on screen is what it’s all about.

We are working with clinical psychologists to create anti-bullying curriculum for schools, which we anticipate piloting in the fall of 2018. We’re working with some fantastic organizations that are helping us base it on evidence. So this is not just ideas, this is solid psychological exercises that we’re working on. People are saying we’re already making a difference, that we’re already saving lives.

STO: Do you have any messages for those who have experienced bullying firsthand?

First off, I want to say to you and anyone else out there, if you were ever bullied, it was never your fault, ever. Not a bit of it. It’s true and it’s really very important to always keep that in mind. Quite frankly, bullying always comes out of the pain of the other person. The minute you see someone being mean to someone else, you know it’s because of fear and insecurity. They need some momentary feeling of power but it’s not real power. Compassion and empathy is power. That’s where our real capabilities to be human come in.

STO: Thank you so much for joining us, Chase. It’s been such a pleasure.

I’m really grateful to be here. You guys are doing amazing work. Thanks for continuing our stories.

Early life [ ]

Leeta never knew her parents and was orphaned when she was a child. As such, she never knew her family name. She later went to work as a servant in the home of a Cardassian named Gallek during the Occupation. Gallek treated her well and never went beyond calling her beautiful. Leeta used her influence to make the lives of Gallek's servants better. After Gallek died a week before the Cardassian withdrawal and the Occupational forces burned his house, Leeta gathered up the money she had made and moved to Deep Space 9 .

Deep Space 9 [ ]

Leeta had begun working at Quark's by late 2371 . She was immediately attracted to Julian Bashir and faked a cough to be close to him. The two would later start dating. Leeta later became friends with Jadzia Dax . Dax later asked her to embody Emony Dax during her zhian'tara. Leeta was aware of it as it was one of many items she had studied to be ready to interact with a variety of customers. Emony would tell Jadzia that Leeta had an excellent body.

In 2372 , Leeta supported her future husband Rom after he formed a union to protest Quark's treatment of his staff. The strike was successful and Leeta was given a raise.

In 2373 , Leeta joined Bashir, Dax, Worf and Quark on their vacation trip to Risa. While there, she and Bashir ended their relationship with the Rite of Separation ceremony. Leeta admitted her love of Rom to Bashir and Quark during the vacation. Several months later, Leeta was briefly courted by Lewis Zimmerman while he was on the station working on the LMH. Leeta was disappointed that Rom did not reveal her feelings for her when Zimmerman offered her a position on Jupiter Station and decided to take the post. While about to leave with Zimmerman, Rom appeared and told Leeta he loved her.

The two later decided to marry, although an argument over a Waiver of Property and Profit document made Leeta briefly call it off. Rom would later relent and gave all his latinum to the Bajoran War Orphans Fund.

Nog and Jake Sisko broke into Leeta's quarters to retrieve Kukalaka, Bashir's teddy bear, which she had borrowed earlier in the year. Leeta would marry Rom later that year, in a ceremony officiated at by Benjamin Sisko . After the wedding was over, Rom told Leeta to follow Shakaar Edon's order for all Bajorans to leave DS9 before the Dominion arrived. Leeta had returned to the station, now back as Terok Nor, several weeks before Operation Return. She would later be arrested by the Cardassians and taken to a cell with Kira Nerys and Jake Sisko. She would later be freed by her brother-in-law Quark. After the Dominion fled the station after the Federation and Klingon victory, Leeta welcomed the Starfleet crew, including her stepson Nog, back to the station. A week later, Leeta was a guest at Jadzia's pre-wedding party. She was greatly "impressed" by Manuele Atoa. Later in the year, Leeta helped Quark, who was posing as Lumba to convince Nilva to support Zek's return, to learn how to act like a woman. In early 2375 , Leeta was one of several DS9 crewmembers who played in the Niners to play against Solok and his Vulcan crew.

After Nog returned to the station after losing a leg at AR-558, Leeta welcomed him home. She and Rom would later visit him in Vic Fontaine's lounge. Later in the year, Rom convinced Leeta, M'Pella, Broik and other staff to convince Quark to give them a raise. Leeta would later accompany Rom to Ferenginar when Zek named him his successor.

Ferenginar and motherhood [ ]

In late 2376 , Leeta became pregnant with her and Rom's first child. They later contacted Quark on DS9 to break the good news and then traveled to Bajor to attend the planet's entry ceremony into the United Federation of Planets in Ashalla.

Leeta and Rom later hired Doctor Orpax to deliver the baby. After her birth, Leeta and Rom named the girl Bena after Sisko and the Bajoran word for "joy". The name also meant "underflooring" in Ferengi .

Leeta may have been the mother of a son and several more daughters by the early 25th century .

Biography [ ]

Leeta was a member of the Terran Rebellion during the 2370s decade . In the year 2375 , she was stationed on Terok Nor . Miles O'Brien instructed her to "debrief" Ezri Dax , following the Terran Rebellion 's defeat of Regent Worf , which Leeta apparently took literally. When the Rom of the primary universe told her "we're married!", she gave him a disgusted look and sneered, "I don't think so...!".

Like Ezri and Intendant Kira Nerys , Leeta seemed to prefer female companionship, and she displayed an attraction to Ezri. ( DS9 episode : " The Emperor's New Cloak ")

Mirror rebellion [ ]

In one permutation of the mirror universe, Leeta married Ezri in late 2375, although the couple waited some time before announcing their marriage. ( DS9 - Mirror Universe novel : Saturn's Children )

Leeta occasionally referred to Ezri by the affectionate nickname "Zee". ( DS9 novel : The Soul Key )

Unlike her primary universe counterpart, Leeta did not grow up in an orphanage. She knew both of her parents, who routinely called her and attempted to persuade her to return to Bajor . She always turned them down, saying that the Rebellion needed her. Her father was a member of the Chamber of Ministers and was concerned that Leeta's activities in the rebellion would severely affect his chances of re-election. ( DS9 - Mirror Universe novel : Saturn's Children )

In January 2377 , Smiley sent the Defiant under Leeta's command to negotiate with the Talarian Republic in an attempt to create a pact against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance . Leeta was able to convince the Talarians to aid the Rebellion and Endar led his people in a battle with the Alliance at Terok Nor .

During the battle, Leeta briefly conversed with her wife's primary universe counterpart, Lieutenant Ezri Dax aboard the USS Defiant , which had crossed over from that universe via the Bajoran wormhole . She wondered whether that Ezri was married to her own primary universe counterpart . ( DS9 novel : The Soul Key )

In 2378 , Leeta was one of the many casualties of the Memory Omega led attack on the SoHcha shipyards . Her death threw Ezri into a deep state of depression which lasted for several weeks.

After the victory of the Terran Rebellion later that year, O'Brien mourned Leeta's death. ( ST - Mirror Universe novel : Rise Like Lions )

Mirror Leeta

Admiral Leeta in 2410

In another permutation of the mirror universe, the Terran Rebellion reestablished the Terran Empire and reoccupied Bajor. By 2409 , Leeta, now a captain in the Imperial Starfleet , was placed in command of Terran forces in Bajor sector and the starship ISS Fortuna . She was contacted by Gul Kardek , a senior member of the primary universe's True Way , about a possible alliance. ( STO - Cardassian Struggle mission : " Spoils of War ")

A starship from the primary universe discovered the True Way's portal into the mirror universe while attempting to recover the Orb of Possibilities . While trying to return it to the mirror universe and recover the version belonging to the primary universe, they were intercepted in the Badlands by Leeta's fleet, but destroyed her escorts and forced the Fortuna into retreat.

Arriving on Bajor, the primary universe crew was again accosted by Imperial ground forces led by Leeta, as well as Kardek, who turned out to be a changeling , but drove her off and captured Kardek before being returned to the primary universe by the Prophets . ( STO - Cardassian Struggle missions : " Spoils of War ", " Jabberwocky ")

In 2410 , Leeta, now promoted to admiral , led a Terran invasion of the primary universe after the Iconian War . The Terrans brought the entire Terok Nor station into the primary universe to attack Deep Space 9 , but a determined Alpha Quadrant Alliance counterattack ended in the defeat of her forces, while Alliance boarding parties penetrated Terok Nor and destroyed the technology used to transport the station. ( STO - Future Proof missions : " Counterpoint ", " Assault on Terok Nor ")

Following the departure of Wesley Crusher with C'qer , V'ger and Ilia , Leeta donned the Imperial crown and outfit. She was supported by the Inquisitor and Kathryn Janeway , Marshal of the Terran Empire. Empress Leeta and her allies set their eyes on the Borg .

Rom was a male Ferengi engineer of the 24th century Ferengi Alliance and became its Grand Nagus . A failure as a businessman but a mechanical and engineering genius, he worked as a waiter for several years at Quark's Bar, Grill, Gaming House and Holosuite Arcade on Deep Space 9 before becoming an engineer in the Bajoran Militia . He was known for being a kinder, gentler Ferengi and kept that reputation as Nagus. He was the son of Keldar and Ishka , younger brother of Quark , and father of Nog . He was married twice, to Prinadora and then Leeta .

Early history [ ]

Rom grew up on Ferenginar with his family. As a child, Rom was always teased for having smaller-than-average lobes than the rest of the boys. Quark was the worst, telling everyone that Rom was adopted. On Rom's Naming Day , Quark substituted his brother's presents with old vegetables , and sold the presents for more than their father had paid for them, which actually earned him the praise of his parents. ( DS9 : " Rivals ") When Rom was a child, he had a latinum tooth sharpener . Quark resented this, as his tooth sharpener was a wooden chew stick.

Deep Space 9 [ ]

Rom at Dabo Wheel

Rom in 2369, shortly after Starfleet arrived to administrate

Rom was employed at Quark's aboard Deep Space 9, holding several positions such as server, pit boss , and assistant to Quark, before being " promoted " to Assistant Manager of Policy and Clientele . He and his brother Quark had an odd relationship. Quark at times treated him like a servant , many times swindling him out of latinum . Other times Quark took care of Rom and provided him with whatever he needed. Rom was very loyal to Quark and would do anything Quark asked – although it wasn't below him as a Ferengi to swindle, steal from or even sell his brother out at times. ( DS9 : " Emissary ", " Babel ", " The Nagus ", " Prophet Motive ")

When the Grand Nagus Zek visited the station, he admonished Rom for sending Nog to school and told him to stop it. Zek made Quark the new nagus so he could retire. Shortly after this, he died. Rom wanted Quark's Bar, but instead Quark appointed Rom as his bodyguard . Rom still wanted the bar, but Quark refused, and Rom along with Krax , Zek's son, decided to kill Quark. Rom escorted him to an airlock but instead of a ship waiting, there was empty space. Just before Quark would have been ejected into space, Zek appeared and stated that he faked his death to test his son's worthiness to be nagus – which he failed. Quark congratulated Rom on his treachery, since this made him a true Ferengi. ( DS9 : " The Nagus ")

After Quark was appointed to open trade negotiation with the Gamma Quadrant , Rom became jealous of a Ferengi named Pel who became Quark's right-hand man in the negotiations. Rom exposed her as a female which got Quark in trouble. ( DS9 : " Rules of Acquisition ")

After the attempted murder of his brother, Rom briefly became a suspect. When the murderer tried to kill Quark again in the hospital, Rom was able to save him. ( DS9 : " Necessary Evil ")

He opposed his brother during the crisis their mother caused when she earned profit. Quark wanted Ishka to return all the profits, or he would have to and be ruined. When they stopped talking to each other, Rom arranged a meeting, and they resolved the issue. Ishka signed a confession and returned the profits. But she hid two-thirds of the profits with Rom's help. ( DS9 : " Family Business ")

Rom was made senior administrator of the Ferengi Benevolent Association , a short-lived organization established by Grand Nagus Zek during a period in which the Prophets had replaced the Nagus' greedy philosophical perspective with a more charitable one. Rom's greed was unaffected, however, and he embezzled money from the association until it was shut down, after Quark convinced the Prophets to restore the Nagus. ( DS9 : " Prophet Motive ")

In 2372 , a mishap on their ship sent Rom, Nog and Quark back to Earth in 1947 . This became known as the Roswell Incident . They were mistaken for invaders and were almost dissected by the military. They escaped with the help of Earth scientists and returned to their own time. On the journey to Earth, Rom's engineering expertise saved them when their ship was in danger of breaking up; and his skills helped them return to the correct time in the future, too. ( DS9 : " Little Green Men ")

A new career [ ]

Rom, 2373

Diagnostic and Repair Technician Rom

Rom became sick due to being overworked. He became angry at the working conditions in Quark's and formed the Guild of Restaurant and Casino Employees . Brunt arrived at the station and threatened Rom, when this failed, he had Quark beaten and threatened to kill him. Rom ended the strike when Quark secretly agreed to his demands. He followed this up with an application to join the station's Bajoran engineering crew and joined Chief O'Brien 's maintenance team, initially working in waste extraction as a Diagnostic and Repair Technician, Junior Grade . Furthermore, while Rom promises to be at Quark's business all the time off duty, it will be as a paying customer who will expect to be treated with more respect as one. ( DS9 : " Bar Association ")

Odo interrogating Rom

Rom being interrogated by Odo

Rom re-calibrated the deflector beam at O'Brien's request. O'Brien was ordered to do this by a Pah-wraith who had taken over Keiko O'Brien 's body and had threatened to kill her. Rom informed O'Brien that the recalibration would send the deflector beam into the wormhole and kill the aliens inside it. O'Brien was able to rig the beam to hit the alien and save Keiko. As Rom kept O'Brien's secret safe until Keiko was no longer in danger, this endeared Rom to O'Brien, who promoted him to the day shift . ( DS9 : " The Assignment ")

He was further promoted to Maintenance Engineer, First Class in mid- 2375 . ( DS9 : " It's Only a Paper Moon ")

Rom was invited to join Captain Sisko's baseball team that was going to play against a Vulcan team coached by Captain Solok , a rival of Sisko's since their Academy days. Rom couldn't hit a ball, and wasn't good at catching, either. Sisko cut him from the team. Later, Sisko felt bad and in the last inning with Nog on third, the team losing 10 to 0, Sisko sent Rom to bat. Rom missed the first two pitches. On the third pitch, as Rom leaned forward to try to see what the coach wanted him to do, he accidentally hit the ball. It rolled down the first base line and Nog slid into home, scoring his team's only run. The team rushed the field and lifted Rom up as the hero of the game. ( DS9 : " Take Me Out to the Holosuite ")

Dominion War [ ]

Rom caught opening A51

Rom activates the security alarm while trying to sabotage the station's deflector array

Rom played an important role in the war against the Dominion, coming up with the idea of self-replicating mines to block the Bajoran wormhole , stopping the Dominion from being reinforced from the Gamma Quadrant. When the Dominion captured Deep Space 9, he remained on board as a " spy " for the Federation and resumed his title of Assistant Manager of Policy and Clientele. ( DS9 : " Call to Arms ")

According to Ronald D. Moore , Rom probably wasn't so hired by Sisko as a spy, but acted on his own interpretation. ( AOL chat , 1997 )

During the Cardassian takeover of DS9, he was part of Kira 's resistance cell against the Dominion. He helped cause dissension between the Dominion and Cardassians. After learning that Gul Dukat was going to use the deflector array to disable the mines, he tried to disable the deflector array, but was caught. He was sentenced to death by Dukat for his actions, but was rescued by Quark and Tora Ziyal . He failed to disable the deflector array in time, but disabled the station's weapons systems instead. The loss of the weapons systems left the Dominion-held station vulnerable after the loss of their reinforcements, allowing the Federation/ Klingon task force to recapture the station easily. ( DS9 : " Behind the Lines ", " Favor the Bold ", " Sacrifice of Angels ")

Several weeks later, when his mother was captured by the Dominion, Rom was part of the Ferengi group that traveled to Empok Nor to exchange her for Keevan . ( DS9 : " The Magnificent Ferengi ")

Becoming Nagus [ ]

Rom becomes Nagus in The Dogs of War

"Wow..." - Rom becomes Grand Nagus in 2375

A series of events through the years all contributed to Rom's elevation to nagus. In 2375 , Rom eventually became Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance .

At first, Grand Nagus Zek ignored Rom, believing him to be of poor business sense and not very intelligent. Zek disagreed strongly with many of Rom's choices concerning his son Nog. Zek did not like the idea of Nog attending a Human school and was opposed to Nog entering Starfleet. But events and Ishka would influence the improvement of Zek's attitude toward Rom. ( DS9 : " The Nagus ")

Rom helped restore the Nagus to the Ferengi ways after the Nagus had been influenced by the Prophets . He helped restore Zek as the Grand Nagus after Brunt had deposed him. ( DS9 : " Prophet Motive ", " Profit and Lace ")

He and Quark entered into the mirror universe and saved Zek from the Alliance . They helped the ISS Defiant in capturing the Regent , after disabling his weapon systems. They also killed mirror Garak who was going to kill them, although Rom was shocked at Leeta's counterpart offering to "debrief" Ezri's counterpart following her defection. Rom's counterpart in the mirror universe had been killed by the Alliance. This saddened Rom as he would have liked the opportunity to have met himself. ( DS9 : " The Emperor's New Cloak ")

When Ishka became Zek's companion, she influenced him in trying to turn Ferengi society into a more tolerant one that allowed free commerce and women's rights. Her influence over Zek led to social reform and a Ferenginar that instituted democratic changes. Rom became the perfect choice for Nagus because he himself had never been a traditional Ferengi. Zek believed that he would be an excellent successor for the newly reformed Ferenginar. ( DS9 : " The Dogs of War ")

Life as Grand Nagus [ ]

At some point prior to 2381 , his Nagus' staff was stolen and exhibited at a museum on Tulgana IV and a substantial reward was offered for its recovery. In 2381, it was recovered from the museum by Petra Aberdeen , an archaeologist . ( LD : " Reflections ")

By 2381, Rom had named Leeta as his First clerk , and banned the sale of weapons, stating that equality and hospitality were more profitable in the long run. While there were Ferengi that supported Rom and his general decisions, there were also others that were unhappy that they couldn't make a faster profit from more unethical deals. ( LD : " Parth Ferengi's Heart Place ")

After an unidentified ship started attacking Ferengi ships and trade routes in 2381, Rom and Leeta met with Admiral Vassery and Captain Carol Freeman on the USS Toronto . While on board, the Grand Nagus offered to sign a formal application for the Ferengi Alliance to start the process of joining the Federation; however, Rom wanted to make changes to the application contract before signing it. After testing Admiral Vassery and Captain Freeman to make sure that he wasn't signing a deal with "a bunch of suckers and rubes" and to see if the Federation respected Ferengi culture, Rom signed the original contract with the Federation; providing the first step for the Ferengi Alliance to join the Federation. This was accomplished thanks to Freeman swindling Rom during the negotiations. ( LD : " Parth Ferengi's Heart Place ")

After Quark left Ferenginar in 2351 , upon reaching his Age of Ascension , Rom lived at home for a further decade. During this time, he realized that Keldar was a poor businessman, going from one bad deal to the next. Rom finally left Ferenginar in 2361 . ( DS9 : " Family Business ")

In the early 2350s , Rom met his first wife, Prinadora . He signed a standard five-year marriage contract with her father in order to have a child. In 2353 , they had their son, Nog . Rom, however, then fell in love with Prinadora and wanted to extend the contract. Unfortunately, he was so in love that he never bothered to read the extension before signing it. In the end, her father swindled Rom out of all of his money, and Prinadora left Rom (and Nog) for a richer man . ( DS9 : " Doctor Bashir, I Presume ")

This does not conflict with Quark's statement in " Fascination " that there is no divorce on Ferenginar. Ferengi marriages evidently have "expiration dates"; a divorce would therefore be equivalent to breaking a contract before expiration.

Quark and Rom in Quark's bar in Body Parts

Brothers Rom and Quark in Quark's Bar

Quark was annoyed and irritated by his brother's stupidity and idiocy all of his life. Growing up, Quark often belittled Rom about his smaller lobes and about supposedly being adopted. He worked in Quark's Bar for low wages and was cheated out of his share of the profits.

When Grand Nagus Zek visited Deep Space 9, Quark made Rom give up his quarters for the Nagus. When Zek appointed Quark to be the new Grand Nagus, Rom conspired to kill Quark, and might have succeeded if Zek and Odo hadn't arrived at the last minute. Quark later praised Rom for his treachery. ( DS9 : " The Nagus ")

At first, Rom did whatever Quark demanded. But as time went on, Rom began to resist his brother's demands. Rom became less afraid of Quark and confronted him over many issues. When Quark dropped Rom's share of the profits from 14.3% to 12.5% (from one-seventh to one-eighth share of profit), Rom left and joined Martus Mazur in opening a rival bar. When Martus began treating Rom even worse, he returned to Quark's where he could at least "be cheated by family." ( DS9 : " Rivals ")

He opposed Quark over his treatment of their mother, who—against Ferengi law—earned profit. When Quark tried to forbid Nog's admission to Starfleet Academy in late 2371 , Rom reminded him that he was Nog's father and Quark had no say in the matter. Later that year, Rom discovered that Quark sabotaged Nog's spatial orientation test to disqualify him from entering the Academy, under the belief that he was perfectly justified in doing so in Nog's "best interests". The infuriated father confronted Quark and in no uncertain terms warned him against interfering with Nog's happiness ever again, even threatening to burn down Quark's bar if he does. ( DS9 : " Heart of Stone ", " Facets ")

The following year, he single-handedly organized a union of Quark's employees after Quark had cut their wages. He defied both his brother and Liquidator Brunt , whom the Ferengi Commerce Authority had sent to resolve the situation. After the wages had been restored, Rom made the final break with his brother. Rom joined the maintenance crew on Deep Space 9. ( DS9 : " Bar Association ")

But, throughout all the conflicts with his brother, he and Quark loved each other very much. This was evident when he became jealous of Quark's relationship with Pel . Rom exposed Pel as a female during a visit by Grand Nagus Zek in 2370 . ( DS9 : " Rules of Acquisition ")

For his part, Quark always took care of Rom if he was in need. Quark had always remained neutral in conflicts from the Cardassian occupation of Bajor to the retaking of Deep Space 9 by the Cardassians. When Rom was arrested for sabotage and sentenced to death, Quark risked his life and saved Rom. They had many adventures together, and many opportunities for profit.

After Quark had sold his bar to Rom for 5,000 bars of latinum under the miscommunicated belief that he was about to become Grand Nagus, Grand Nagus Rom gave him back the bar and let him keep the money as they were family. Quark called him an idiot, but then affectionately added that he loved him. ( DS9 : " The Dogs of War ")

Rom's mother, Ishka, loved Rom very much and protected him. She saw that he was a good man, unsuccessful in commercial ventures, but with a good heart. Ironically, she saw Rom as being more similar to his father Keldar , whom Quark mistakenly idolized, although he too was a terrible businessman. Quark, conversely, was more like her.

Rom and Ishka were very close when he was a child, and they remained close when Rom moved away from Ferenginar. Rom never quarreled with her over her lifestyle, nor resented her for earning more profit than him. Ishka was his "Moogie." He supported her against both Quark and the Ferengi Commerce Authority. After she got him to admit to being somewhat uncomfortable with being in Ishka's newly clothed presence in a private discussion between them, she disrobed, but "only for him". He would apparently get used to the idea and never brought up her clothes as being an issue from then on. ( DS9 : " Family Business ")

Rom was part of the team that rescued Ishka from the Dominion . The Dominion agreed to a prisoner exchange, Ishka for the Vorta Keevan . Empok Nor was the site for the prisoner exchange. After a battle with the Jem'Hadar , Ishka was rescued. ( DS9 : " The Magnificent Ferengi ")

Ishka probably influenced Zek in naming Rom his successor as the new Nagus. ( DS9 : " The Dogs of War ")

Nog and Rom shake hands

Rom with his son Nog

Rom had a good relationship with his son Nog , although there were times that they did not see eye-to-eye.

Nog wanted to pursue career opportunities of a nontraditional Ferengi nature. Rom strongly disapproved and even attempted to prevent Nog from learning to read or attend Keiko O'Brien 's school on the station. But he changed his mind and allowed (forcefully) Nog to attend the school. ( DS9 : " The Nagus ")

Over the years, Rom's attitudes softened, and he encouraged his son in his goals. His ambition for his son grew to the point where he felt directly invested. When Nog wished to apply to Starfleet , Rom encouraged him, saying that he would be proud to have a son in Starfleet. ( DS9 : " Heart of Stone ") Quark, however, remained opposed to the idea. When Rom discovered that Quark had altered the settings of the holosuite to sabotage the results of the spatial orientation test so that Nog would fail, he confronted his brother about it. Having already reported the incident to Commander Sisko, who allowed Nog to retake the test, Rom warned Quark that if he tried to interfere again, he would burn his brother's bar to the ground. Nothing was important to Rom than his son's happiness, not even latinum. ( DS9 : " Facets ")

When his son became a cadet , Rom was extremely proud, although he always worried about Nog and the dangers he faced. Nog joined Rom in rescuing Ishka from the Dominion. He later had to deal with Nog's depression after his son was wounded in a battle with the Dominion and lost a leg. Rom opposed the idea that Nog would recuperate in the Vic Fontaine holoprogram . ( DS9 : " It's Only a Paper Moon ")

Leeta and Rom's wedding

Leeta and Rom's wedding, 2373

In 2373 , Rom fell in love with Leeta , a Bajoran woman who worked as one of the dabo girls at Quark's. Leeta admitted to having a crush on him to her ex-boyfriend, Julian Bashir . ( DS9 : " Let He Who Is Without Sin... ")

Despite constantly planning to do so, Rom could never work up the courage to ask Leeta out. When Doctor Lewis Zimmerman visited the station to work with Doctor Bashir, he fell in love with Leeta. She was going to leave with him, and they planned to live together, Zimmerman offering to let her open a restaurant on Jupiter Station . Just as she was boarding a ship, Rom stopped her and confessed his love for her. Leeta admitted that she was in love with Rom and remained. ( DS9 : " Doctor Bashir, I Presume ")

Rom learned about Bajoran customs to please Leeta but demanded that Leeta sign the Ferengi equivalent of a pre-nuptial agreement, called the Waiver of Property and Profit . Rom and Leeta broke up over the demand and that made Rom miserable. He decided to give his latinum to the Bajoran War Orphans Fund so that the pre-nuptial agreement was no longer necessary, and he and Leeta made up. ( DS9 : " Ferengi Love Songs ")

The two were married in late-2373 in a ceremony officiated by Benjamin Sisko. ( DS9 : " Call to Arms ")

Background information [ ]

Rom was portrayed by Max Grodénchik .

Grodénchik commented: " When this series started, Rom had no prospects. He was under his brother's thumb, he had no real sense of self, and he felt that he was a failure as a Ferengi. He was frightened, a scared little guy. But with the influence of all the different races that have come through the station – the Bajorans, the Humans, the Klingons , and so on – he began to think about other ways of life and to reshape his own. He began to stick up for his son and then for himself, and to separate what was important to him in life, and what wasn't. And he developed to a point where he wanted to share his life with someone else. He fell in love and married Leeta and felt worthwhile. I think it began back in season one, when Rom returned a purse and Quark asked, 'Why did you do that? The First Rule of Acquisition says once you have their money, you never give it back.' He was trying to do a good thing, the right thing. And somehow that led him to the point where the guy who felt less like a Ferengi than any other Ferengi was suddenly head of the Ferengi Alliance! It's just like an American kid wanting to grow up to be President . I'm sure every Ferengi boy wants to grow up to be the Grand Nagus. If you're an American kid and somewhere along the line you start getting bad grades, you tell yourself, 'Well, maybe I'll just settle for being a fireman '. Your dreams get whittled down over the years. So I'm sure for Rom it's the last thing he ever expected. It's just been an amazing journey! Over the years, I've tried to outguess the writers. I've tried to imagine what's next for Rom and think of what's best for Rom. But they always come up with something better than I could ever imagine. I certainly can't complain and I've learned that maybe it's not my job to think about it. I should just leave it to the Blessed Exchequer ! " ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 233)

Max Grodénchik sees " Necessary Evil " as an important episode in the development of Rom as a character. Grodénchik commented: " I do think that these characters are continuing to grow. In "Necessary Evil", Odo says to me, 'You are a hero, Rom. You saved your brother's life'. That feels good. I think Rom is torn between both sides of that – being a good brother and wanting the bar. He is very conflicted, and I think that is a good thing. We are all conflicted about something. It is more sophisticated and true to life than just saying Rom just wants the bar, because I think Rom also wants his brother's approval. He even says in ["Necessary Evil"], 'I tried so hard to win my brother's trust, but now he is dead I can never earn it'. He wants the bar to prove to his brother that he can make great profit. When Quark went away to the Gamma Quadrant with Pel (in " Rules of Acquisition "), he did great business ". ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p 66)

According to Ronald D. Moore , Rom (as of Season 6, and unlike his son ) probably was not a Federation citizen. ( AOL chat , 1997 )

Apocrypha [ ]

In the Deep Space Nine relaunch novels , Rom and Leeta went on to have a daughter, whom they named Bena, both for the Bajoran word for "joy", and after Benjamin Sisko for all he had done for them. Ironically, as Quark pointed out, the word "bena", in Ferengi, meant "underflooring", although Rom defended it by saying that it symbolized how children were always getting underfoot. At the time of Bena's birth, Rom was being challenged for his role of Grand Nagus on the grounds that he had broken his original marriage contract with Prinadora, but Ro Laren was able to clear him by pointing out that, according to the Rules of Acquisition , " A contract is a contract is a contract, but only between Ferengi ", arguing that, since Rom's second marriage was to a Bajoran woman in a Bajoran ceremony overseen by the Bajoran Emissary, he technically didn't violate his original contract as the new one didn't "count" under Ferengi law.

Rom also opened diplomatic relations between Ferenginar and Bajor when Bajor joined the Federation. At the same time, he arranged to have Quark's Bar named as the official Ferengi Embassy to Bajor, resulting in Quark becoming the Ferengi Ambassador to Bajor. With his bar now as the Ferengi Embassy, Quark could still continue to charge latinum for his services – as the Embassy, the bar became Ferengi "soil" and therefore subject to Ferengi law, whereas under Federation law (and the Federation's post-scarcity, money-free economy), Quark would have been unable to charge.

In the novel A Singular Destiny , Rom accepted an invitation for the Ferengi Alliance, and the Cardassian Union , to join the Federation and Klingon Empire in an expansion of the Khitomer Accords , in response to the Typhon Pact: an alliance of the Romulan Star Empire , the Tholian Assembly , the Breen Confederacy , the Gorn Hegemony , the Tzenkethi Coalition, and the Holy Order of the Kinshaya.

In the video game Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Fallen , Rom made several non-speaking appearances on the Promenade between missions. He was also mentioned by name in the PC game Star Trek: Bridge Commander in his capacity as Grand Nagus.

In the video game Star Trek Online , Rom, as Grand Nagus, negotiated an agreement with the Cardassian Detapa Council to finance the rebuilding of Cardassia's cities and industry in 2391 . Rom makes his official appearance in the game in the "Victory is Life" expansion, voiced once more by Max Grodénchik. He attends a conference called by Odo at DS9 to answer the threat of the Hur'q , remarking that Ferenginar was one of the planets attacked by the creatures, and enthusiastically supports joining the forces assembled to fight them. Both he and Quark also work to convince the Klingons to commit to the conflict by reclaiming the Sword of Kahless from the Iconians .

In the Star Trek: Terok Nor novel Dawn of the Eagles , Rom moved to Terok Nor with Nog and began working at Quark's in 2363 after being swindled by Prinadora's father Dav.
