Installing IBM App Connect on Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS GovCloud (US)

ROSA-only content

From the Red Hat OpenShift OperatorHub, which provides a user interface for discovering Operators, you can install the IBM App Connect Operator into your cluster to obtain an independent deployment of App Connect .

The IBM App Connect Operator is also included with IBM Cloud Pak for Integration , which delivers a collection of product capabilities (or components) in a streamlined integration solution. App Connect provides the application integration capability within the unified containerized environment. Cloud Pak for Integration is delivered as a set of Operators within the OperatorHub.

To complete the steps for installing App Connect , ensure that you have cluster administrator authority with cluster-admin permissions.

Adding the IBM App Connect Operator to a catalog by using the Red Hat OpenShift web console

From an online cluster with access to public registries, you can add the IBM App Connect Operator to the list of Operators that you can install from a catalog. To add the Operator to a catalog, deploy a catalog source resource for the IBM Operator Catalog, which provides a catalog of IBM product offerings. When you install the IBM App Connect Operator , its images are pulled directly from the public registries.

To install the Operator by using the OpenShift web console, complete the following steps:

  • Log in to the OpenShift web console.

Import YAML icon

  • Click Create .

IBM App Connect Operator tile in the OperatorHub

Installing the IBM App Connect Operator

After the IBM App Connect Operator becomes available in the catalog in your cluster, you can install the Operator by using the Red Hat OpenShift web console or CLI.

To install the IBM App Connect Operator , follow the instructions at Installing the IBM App Connect Operator .

When you install the IBM App Connect Operator , custom resources for the App Connect components are provided as APIs. You can use these custom resources to create App Connect Designer and App Connect Dashboard instances that you can use to develop and run integrations with the help of the following resources: flows, integration runtimes, integration servers, configuration objects, trace objects, and switch servers.

After you install the IBM App Connect Operator in your cluster, you can create the App Connect components that you (or other users) need. These components include authoring and runtime environments, and resources that you can create within those environments.

App Connect Designer is an authoring environment that you can use to develop flows. A flow connects IBM and third-party applications and APIs, and provides a way to automate tasks or workflows, and boost productivity. When you create a flow, you use connectors to establish connections to, and interact with, the target applications or APIs that are referenced in the flow. To further customize a flow, you can use toolbox utilities to apply specialized processing to the flow; for example, if...then conditions or for each loops.

You can also use the IBM App Connect Enterprise Toolkit to develop message flows that process your business messages and data. The Toolkit is a development environment that is available with IBM App Connect Enterprise or IBM App Connect Enterprise for Developers.

App Connect Dashboard is a runtime environment that you can use to host the flows that you create in App Connect Designer (Designer flows) or in the IBM App Connect Enterprise Toolkit (Toolkit flows). You host these flows by deploying them as integration runtimes or integration servers .

An integration runtime or integration server provides an isolated runtime environment for a Designer or Toolkit flow. When you deploy an integration runtime or integration server, you can also define environment-specific settings or additional content that you want to apply to that integration runtime or integration server. You define these settings or additional content by creating configuration objects .

To aid with troubleshooting, you can also enable and manage trace on an integration runtime or integration server to record additional details that can be analyzed to discover the cause of a problem.

A switch server is a special kind of integration server that you can use to configure secure connectivity if a flow, integration runtime, or integration server in your cluster needs to interact with your on-premises App Connect Enterprise or IBM Integration Bus system, or with some other private network.

Obtaining and applying your IBM Entitled Registry entitlement key

To allow the Operator to pull the software images for the App Connect components from the IBM Entitled Registry , you need to obtain an entitlement key that you can supply as a Kubernetes pull secret. You can add this pull secret to each namespace where you want to create your App Connect components or resources, or you can add it as a global pull secret.

For more information, see Obtaining and applying your IBM Entitled Registry entitlement key .

Creating your authoring and runtime environments, and other App Connect resources

After you create a pull secret to store your entitlement key, you can begin to create the App Connect components or resources that you or other users need.

The following considerations apply:

  • If you want to create Designer flows that you can subsequently deploy to run as integration runtimes or integration servers, create an App Connect Designer instance to host your Designer flows and an App Connect Dashboard instance to host your deployed integrations.
  • If you also want to deploy Toolkit flows to run as integration runtimes or integration servers, you can deploy them to the same App Connect Dashboard instance as the Designer flows. (If you are developing Toolkit flows, but not Designer flows, you do not need to create an App Connect Designer instance.)

You also need to associate the switch server with the App Connect Designer or App Connect Dashboard instance where the flow or integration is running. You can do so by adding the switch server name to the custom resource settings for the App Connect Designer or App Connect Dashboard instance when or after you create the instance.

  • If you want to apply environment-specific settings or additional content to an integration runtime or integration server that you are deploying, define these settings in configuration objects. You can create the configuration objects before you deploy the integration runtime or integration server, or during its deployment.
  • You can enable or run trace only after you deploy an integration runtime or integration server.

For information about creating your authoring and runtime environments, and other App Connect resources, see the following details:

Generative artificial intelligence ( GenAI ) is on many people's minds right now. Some are excited to see what kind of productivity boosts they can get with it, while others are concerned that the way this technology is progressing is very unethical .

I will let you be the judge of that. Meanwhile, many organizations have been pushing for more openness in the field of LLM development, with the most recent one being Red Hat , which recently introduced a new foundational model platform that is driven by the idea of open-source.

Let's see what they have been up to. 😃

What Is RHEL AI?

a screenshot of the red hat enterprise linux ai product page on the red hat homepage

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI is a foundation model platform for simplifying the development, testing, and running of GenAI models in an enterprise setting.

RHEL AI is based on the open-source InstructLab project, where Red Hat has combined IBM's open-source Granite family of models and InstructLab's model alignment tools ( based on the LAB methodology ) into a bootable RHEL image that can be quickly deployed on servers .

With this in place, developers can get a quick start into GenAI development, as the bootable image contains popular AI libraries and features an optimized software stack for hardware accelerators (or GPUs ) from the likes of NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD.

When talking about this, VP and GM of Foundation Model Platforms at Red Hat, Joe Fernandes , noted that:

RHEL AI provides the ability for domain experts, not just data scientists, to contribute to a built-for-purpose gen AI model across the hybrid cloud, while also enabling IT organizations to scale these models for production through Red Hat OpenShift AI.

I suggest you give the previously published announcement blog a read, as it contains in-depth information on how RHEL AI came to be.

💰 Pricing and Availability

If you are interested, you will have to contact Red Hat for pricing on the official product page for RHEL AI. Currently, you have the option to run it on any server of your choice or via the “ bring your own subscription ” way for AWS and IBM Cloud.

Red Hat mentions that RHEL AI will be directly available via their OEM partners and that they are working on expanding their range of cloud and OEM partners for it.

Authorities vow relentless search as manhunt for interstate shooter enters third day in Kentucky

AP logo

As a grueling manhunt stretched into a third day Monday for a suspect in an interstate shooting that struck 12 vehicles and wounded five people, authorities vowed to keep up a relentless search as the stress level remained high for a rural area where some schools canceled classes.

Authorities have been searching a rugged, hilly area of southeastern Kentucky since Saturday evening, when a gunman began shooting at drivers on Interstate 75 near London, a small city of about 8,000 people located about 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Lexington.

The search was temporarily suspended once darkness fell Sunday night, but was set to resume Monday morning.

"We're not going to quit until we do lay hands on him," Laurel County Sheriff John Root said Sunday night.

Joseph A. Couch, 32, was named first as a person of interest and later as a suspect in the shooting after authorities said they recovered his SUV on a service road near the crime scene. They later found a semi-automatic weapon nearby that they believe was used in the shooting, said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, a spokesperson for the local sheriff's office.

On Sunday, as another day of searching was ending without any sign of the suspect, Acciardo acknowledged the frustration that law enforcement officers and people who live near the search area are feeling.

"As this continues, it becomes more stressful for the community, it becomes more stressful for the officers that are there because we're looking ... and we're trying to find him, and we haven't found him," he said.

State police Master Trooper Scottie Pennington, a spokesman for the London state police post, said troopers are being brought in from around the state to aid the manhunt. He described the extensive search area as "walking in a jungle" with machetes needed to cut through thickets of woods.

Acciardo said it appears that the attacker planned the shooting for that location because it is very remote and the terrain is hilly, rocky and hard to navigate.

With the gunman still at large, numerous area school districts canceled classes for Monday. Pennington urged area residents to lock doors, keep porch lights on and monitor security cameras. The search was focused on a remote area about eight miles north of London.

Authorities sought to reassure residents that they believe the suspect will be found.

"We're doing everything that we can do," Root said, adding, "Just be confident."

Authorities said Couch purchased the weapon and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition Saturday morning in London. Couch has a military background, having served in the National Guard for at least four years, said Capt. Richard Dalrymple of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities initially said nine vehicles were struck by gunfire, but later increased that number to 12, saying some people did not realize their cars had been hit by bullets until they arrived home. They said the gunman fired a total of 20 to 30 rounds.

Couch most recently lived in Woodbine, a small community about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of the shooting scene. Acciardo said authorities found his abandoned vehicle Saturday and then an AR-15 rifle on Sunday in a wooded area near a highway where "he could have shot down upon the interstate." A phone believed to be Couch's was also found by law enforcement, but the battery had been taken out.

Some residents of Laurel County were on edge as authorities searched with a drone, helicopter and on foot in a remote and sparsely populated wooded area near the busy interstate.

Cody Shepherd, sipping a bloody mary outdoors while waiting to watch a football game at the Pour Boyz Sports Lounge in London on Sunday, said locals were abuzz with speculation. A resident of London, he was at a party Saturday at a friend's house about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of where the shooting occurred.

"We were listening to the police scanners all night," he said, adding they heard sirens and saw a helicopter overhead.

On Sunday, several local churches canceled services. But Rodney Goodlett, pastor of Faith Assembly of God in London, was helping direct traffic as parishioners gathered for a morning service. He expected the search would hold down attendance.

"This is tragic, obviously, that somebody would randomly do violent acts," he said. "You hear media things taking place all around our country, but then when it hits home, it's a little bit of a wake-up call."

Acciardo said authorities are being inundated with tips from the public and are following up on each one in case it could help them find the shooter. When the search has been suspended at night, specially trained officers have been deployed in strategic locations in the woods to prevent the gunman from slipping out of the area.

"We've got to get him," Acciardo said.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
