This Small City in Tennessee Just Got a Luxury Farm Resort — Here's a First Look Inside

Southall is now open in Franklin, Tennessee, just outside Nashville — and we got a first look inside.

Just outside the charming small city of Franklin, in the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee, Southall has officially opened, and we got a first look at the new farm-focused luxury resort . Surrounded by old-growth forests and picturesque pastoral landscapes on 325 acres, the resort is a destination in itself, providing guests with the opportunity to explore the region’s agricultural customs, local flavors, and natural beauty through farm-to-table dining, an extensive menu of activities, and a modern take on Southern hospitality.

At the heart of the property, The Inn offers 62 guest rooms and suites, plus there are more than a dozen cottages nestled in the rolling hills overlooking the estate. All rooms have oversized soaking tubs and local artwork, and some come with their own fireplace. Arbor Cottages have an upscale tree house feel with a large porch — perfect for sipping hot apple cider while taking in the view — and huge in-room copper tubs. One- and two-bedroom Hillside Cottages feature screened-in outdoor seating and ample space for spreading out. The Inn and the cottages provide a sophisticated take on the farm aesthetic with a modern exterior designed by 906 Studio Architects, and interiors designed by IndiDesign include wood-burning fireplaces, exposed wood beams, lots of windows to bring in natural light, and whimsical woodland-inspired touches.

If the Inn — home to Sojourner and Mary Amelia restaurants and The Spa at Southall — is the heart of the resort, the farm is its soul. Southall prides itself on curating an authentic seed-to-fork experience, with tours and classes revolving around the land. Even though the hotel has just opened to guests, the team has already been working for years, cultivating crops and creating a sustainable farm that can offer fresh produce — including unique heirloom varieties that you might not see at your average farmers market — for the kitchen to use in their seasonal dishes.

On the property, there's a 2,000-tree apple orchard, hydroponic and traditional greenhouses, terraced kitchen gardens, large-format gardens, a seed-saving program, and acres of land for foraging wild plant species. An apiary is home to millions of bees that help pollinate the farm and provide delicious, award-winning honey that's incorporated into dishes at the restaurants. The Jammery is a certified canning kitchen, where produce is pickled, dehydrated, jammed, and preserved to extend the year’s harvest and add even more local flavor to the meals offered on site. And farm tours, cooking demonstrations, honey tastings, apple picking, gardening classes, forest bathing, and more allow guests to experience nature — and the natural beauty and bounty of Middle Tennessee — in unique ways. 

After spending a day touring the farm, seeing the resident bees, and trekking the hills, the experience comes full circle thanks to the culinary program created by executive chef Andrew Klamar and senior vice president of culinary and agriculture Tyler Brown. Sojourner is the resort’s all-day-dining outpost. In the morning, there are fresh egg dishes served alongside country ham and grits, homemade pastries, apple pancakes, and more. Cocktails inspired by local flavors, and dishes ranging from veggie-focused to rich and meaty, reflect the farm’s harvest and Middle Tennessee culinary traditions. Mary Amelia is the signature restaurant, opening in the coming weeks, slated to serve a multicourse menu that honors those farm-grown ingredients. 

Of course, nourishment goes beyond the farm-to-table food and beverage program to include meaningful experiences and wellness offerings that give guests a wonderfully relaxing, educational, and luxurious getaway. A 15,000-square-foot spa offers ingredient-driven treatments using products from brands such as Seed to Skin and Naturopathica. It's also home to a gorgeous outdoor relaxation area with a heated mineral pool and lounges overlooking Lake Mishkin, the pond at the center of the property, named for the founder, Paul Mishkin. The spa even includes a sauna, steam room, and two relaxation rooms, and the Lennon Poppy Salon is the place to go for hair, nail, and makeup services. 

Other on-site experiences range from thrilling (falconry, mountain biking, and a ropes course) to peaceful (sound bath meditation, yoga, and morning hikes), just to name a few. Apiary tours offer an enlightening look at the world of bees, their impact on the farm ecosystem, and the lessons we can learn from them. And two pools, a picturesque hilltop overlook, and water activities like fishing and kayaking on Lake Mishkin all add to the bespoke country experience.

And while you certainly won’t run out of things to do on property, the bustling honky-tonk bars and boutique shopping of Nashville are just a short drive away, and the charming city of Franklin — with its postcard-perfect main street dotted with local shops and restaurants — lies even closer.

In December, Southall Farm & Inn changed that. A 325-acre resort in Franklin, a wealthy suburb just over 30 minutes southwest of the state’s capital building. The luxury farm resort was one of the first for Middle Tennessee, beckoning visitors to trade in sleepless and debaucherous nights on Broadway for a more holistic and gentile style of southern living.

What that looks like on a material level is 16 standalone cottages (rooms starts at $839 per night) separated by wide open spaces, a 62-room inn, and the liberal use of foraged herbs and botanicals in treatments at the 15,000-square-foot spa. Local design shop 906 Studio Architects are responsible for the contemporary farmhouse exterior, while the interiors were dreamt up by Los Angeles firm Indidesign.

To find anything of a similar standard in the state you’d need to drive three hours east to the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, where Blackberry Farm has provided two decades of proof of concept.

Naturally, Southall has already drawn comparisons to that famed 68-key Relais & Chateaux resort, which integrates elite hotel knowhow with a 4,200-acre working farm. While both resorts are somewhat of a destination in themselves, Southall is a slice of paradise minutes from a major city, with access to some of the state’s best parks. You can be on Music Row in the morning and be foraging or hiking in Southall after lunch. At Blackberry Farm , you’d need to drive 45 minutes just to get to the growing, but much smaller, city of Knoxville.

Unsurprisingly, Southall has already attracted a wide range of VIP guests, but it’s filling a niche in Nashville that has wide reaching appeal. It’s drawing solo travelers looking for a wellness retreat, couples seeking solace in the countryside, and even global investment firms, which buy out the property for corporate outings. And yes, even groups of girlfriends are checking in for a more tranquil weekend than the sequins, sashes, and two-for-one longnecks in Music City.

I have been buying tickets from Southall Travel for over 20 years, today they refused to do a price match even though I have sent them written confirmation from other travel agent quote southall travel simply saying can’t match the price, so i have send a email to sunrise radio why they promoting fake advertising on radio AD 24x7 Southall travel guaranty price match its all fake, they won’t it’s all miss information and fake advertising such a shame Southall travel one of the old in west London, I never doubt on Southall travel until now. Went on Southall website to book a holiday got a price online then they sent a email the price was then over 2 thousand dearer the reason apparently was that the website was giving wrong quotes and the price was for 4 adults instead of 5 which clearly wasn’t the truth due to the email they sent inclusive of 5 adults

I have been buying tickets from Southall Travel for over 20 years, today they refused to do a price match even though I have sent them written confirmation from other travel agent quote southall travel simply saying can’t match the price, so i have send a email to sunrise radio why they promoting fake advertising on radio AD 24x7 Southall travel guaranty price match its all fake, they won’t it’s all miss information and fake advertising such a shame Southall travel one of the old in west London, I never doubt on Southall travel until now. Really shocking

Went on Southall website to book a holiday got a price online then they sent a email the price was then over 2 thousand dearer the reason apparently was that the website was giving wrong quotes and the price was for 4 adults instead of 5 which clearly wasn’t the truth due to the email they sent inclusive of 5 adults

“Worth experience ever”

I had the worst ever experience in booking a flight with Southall travels. The agent who handled me did not understand me and kept going for 2 hours. After a frustrating conversation of close to 2-2.5 hours I booked the tickets to get it done with only to find that the tickets are way cheaper in the airline site. Don't ever use southall travels

“Poor and Dodgy service”

Very poor service, dodgy deals and false commitments. When it comes to refund... it is a nightmare. Soon after booking confirmation they start changing the flights dates & timing. Too difficult to get hold of someone on phone. Their phone are most of time on auto repliers. Their flexible ticket means if you refund you will have to pay £200 per ticket. My refund dispute is pending for the last four months Please keep away from this fraud company.

One of my friends has been booking with Southall for years and he used to talk of deals that seemed too good to be true till I tried out booking with them myself. I landed an awesome deal on my reservations with Atlantis The Palm and the stay was an unforgettable experience cannot but give credit to the guys at Southall for arranging it. Considering the current experience I have had I will make sure to check with them the next time I plan to take an international holiday to anywhere in the world.

Very poor service this time. The agent didn't offer the best match flight (which I searched and advised about). Thereafter, not the best price matched. When I asked for a price match similar to the airline website, I was advised that the price wasn't at the same terms- which eventually I found out it was same terms and conditions. Moreso, I was asked to make payment quickly or the tickets would be released? Very misguiding service, I wouldn't recommend the agent at all.

For all of my 37 years, my Mom has been my best friend . During my diva-like era in junior high, I probably wouldn’t have admitted that. But regardless of all the eye rolls I gave her when I was embarrassed by her quoting pop songs or critiquing my fashion choices, I’ve always loved, respected, and admired her beyond measure. She’s the person I call immediately after a painful break-up, and the one on speed dial any time I have a piece of good news to celebrate.

Travel has been a passion of mine since Mom took me on my first trip abroad when I was 21. To return the favor at long last after the trip to Tanzania that she took me on 16 years ago—and as a tiny token of gratitude for her unwavering support and love—I decided it was time to plan a mother-daughter getaway . While I can’t speak for Mom, after the 5 days we spent together at Southall Farm & Inn , I’ve never felt closer to her. 

At the end of our trip, as we hugged and she melted into my arms, I realized that the secret sauce to well-spent time together was a well-planned vacation. If you have any mother-daughter trips (or excursions with your father, mother-like figure, grandparent, or otherwise) on the horizon, here are a few seemingly small details that made a major difference in ensuring a comfortable and memorable bonding experience.

I’m one of the odd travelers who not-so-secretly loves the airport. Sure, I’d rather not stay there for hours longer than scheduled, but there’s something inspiring about being surrounded by individuals on the cusp of adventure. Plus, after taking 44 flights last year and 30 this year already, the airport is starting to feel like a second home.

Mom, however, finds the entire airport process to be stressful and draining. So when considering where to head for this mother-daughter vacation, we decided it should be within range of a direct flight for us both. Beyond being a single flight away, our destination, Nashville, earned bonus points for being an easy-to-navigate airport. Before you select your hotel, think about how you’ll get there—and if there’s an easier, breezier way to whisk Mom away.

With new resorts , hotels , bed-and-breakfasts, and glamping spots opening around the South each passing month, the task of choosing just one place to stay can become daunting. My solution: Seeking out a hotel that nods to Mom’s childhood, and, if possible, her current interests. My Mom grew up on a farm, and her retirement passion project is transforming part of her backyard into native plant gardens. With Southall Farm & Inn ’s focus on bees (they have 7 million!), verdant native prairie land, greenhouse, and in-ground farming program, the 325-acre Franklin, Tennessee property felt like the perfect fit.

Brainstorm Potential "Firsts"

My Mom has also taught me everything from how to read to how to bake and garden. (I can only wish to have half the green thumb she has!) She also made that first international trip possible. So it was fun to turn the tables to contemplate a “first,” or a few, for her.

Some Southall features totally fit the bill, and that led to a few of the outing’s most memorable moments: Sharing room service (which we enjoyed while playing rounds of Yahtzee), taking part in a soothing sound bath, and visiting the spa to indulge in a hot stone massage.

This mother-daughter trip was a dual mission: To reciprocate all the TLC she has shown me and to bond in an even deeper way. Goal number one was achieved simply by booking and enjoying the trip together. Goal two was something that would take a bit more intention.

To help inspire us to eventually shift past the small talk and immerse ourselves in honest, insightful conversations, I pulled up the 36 Questions for Increasing Closeness . (You might also know these as the “36 questions that lead to love,” but they work for sparking deep discussions between individuals, whether you’re partners, parents, or pals.) The queries start light and grow increasingly more intimate, and by the end of our 5-day trip, I knew what my Mom would save in a fire, am privy to her most treasured and terrifying memories, and have confirmed what she loves most about me—and vice versa.

Save Space for Spontaneity 

This isn’t to say that the entirety of the trip was serious. Sprinkled between our enlightening exchanges, our nature strolls, and our spa sessions, we had several slots of blank space in our schedule to fill (or leave empty) as we desired.

Since we weren’t being booked every hour, as Mom and I tend to do at home, we were able to be more intuitive and explore more of historic and charming Franklin, Tennessee . An open afternoon allowed us to wander through bookstores and art galleries. We were able to swoon over our surroundings as I drove us down the Natchez Trace Parkway (one of the most beautiful drives in the South), and got to swing by Sweethaven and ask, “Ice cream for lunch?”
