7 continents in 4 months: Holland America Line reveals 2026 world cruise

Portrait of Nathan Diller

If visiting all seven continents is on your travel bucket list, a new cruise from Holland America Line will make it easy for you.

The cruise line’s 2026 Grand World Voyage will traverse the globe over 132 days, stopping at 47 ports in 39 countries. Passengers just have to get themselves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the trip’s round-trip departure point.

“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” Holland America’s president, Gus Antorcha, said when announcing the itinerary to guests currently sailing on the line’s 2024 Grand World Voyage on Monday, according to a news release. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays."

When is the 2026 Grand World Voyage?

The cruise will set sail on Jan. 4, 2026, on the line’s 1,432-guest Volendam ship which launched in 1999.

Where will the cruise sail?

Antorcha said the cruise will visit fewer ports than previous Grand World Voyages “to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”

Passengers will head down South America’s east coast before making their way to Antarctica. There, they will have a four-day Antarctic Experience (though guests won’t disembark due to the ship’s size ).

The ship will then head to destinations like the South Pacific and Australia, with time to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The remainder of the voyage includes Singapore, the Maldives , the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The trip will wind down with a transatlantic crossing before one last stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Passengers will stay overnight at nine ports, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Bali in Indonesia and Alexandria, Egypt. There will also be five late-night departures in Civitavecchia, Italy, Oslo, Norway, and San Juan, among others.

Other highlights include visits to Easter Island, Adamstown in the Pitcairn Islands, and Bordeaux, France.

What is a world cruise?: Here's what sets the months-long voyages apart

How much does the cruise cost?

Pricing info is not yet available, but an inside cabin on the line's 2025 Grand World Voyage currently starts at $24,999.

Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel adviser to make a future cruise request for the 2026 itinerary and get priority booking confirmation before the cruise opens for sale to the public in May.

Holland-America's Choose-Your-Own World Voyages

Marilyn Jones

I sailed with Holland America Line in Alaska earlier this year, and I was impressed with their crew, ship, entertainment, and activities onboard.

If you’ve ever been intrigued by some of the very long world cruises on offer but thought that many months at sea might be more than you want, there’s good news from Holland America; I just learned that two of their really-long signature cruises are now being offered in sections so you can pick the length you want by booking one segment.

On Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole aboard Volendam, which is a 133-day Grand Voyage, segments from 33 to 100 days are available. On Zuiderdam’s Grand World Voyage, which is 124 days in full, guests can choose from six segments, ranging from 20 to 55 days. The segments allow guests to choose from diverse, shorter itineraries, tailoring the Grand Voyage experience to their own taste and timeline.

Grand Voyage segments sail between two key ports along each voyage, making joining the ship in various locales worldwide accessible. On the Grand World Voyage, guests can sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Singapore or Sydney, Australia; Singapore to Athens, Greece; Cape Town, South Africa, to Fort Lauderdale; Sydney to Cape Town; and Athens to Fort Lauderdale.

The Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole segments cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Buenos Aires to Barcelona, Spain, or Ijmuiden (Amsterdam), the Netherlands, or Fort Lauderdale; Fort Lauderdale to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam); and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) or Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale.

Zuiderdam’s Grand World Voyage starts its roundtrip January 4 from Fort Lauderdale. Highlighted segments include:

  • 55-Day Fort Lauderdale to Singapore, Jan. 4–March 1, 2025: Those looking for a sampling of a world cruise can embark in the convenient North American homeport of Fort Lauderdale, sailing east to west, before ultimately disembarking in Singapore. On the voyage, Zuiderdam will call at ports in 13 countries, and guests will experience multiple bucket list items, including a Panama Canal transit, overnight stay at Easter Island and scenic cruising in the Great Barrier Reef.
  • 20-Day Athens to Fort Lauderdale, April 19؎May 9, 2025: Guests looking for the shortest taste of a grand can embark in Athens for a Mediterranean adventure, calling ports in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Morocco—including a special overnight celebration in Barcelona—before heading across the Atlantic Ocean, visiting San Juan, Puerto Rico, for a perfect day in paradise before disembarking at Fort Lauderdale.

2025 Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole aboard Volendam, departs Jan. 25, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale. Its highlight segments include

  • 47-Day Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Aires, Jan. 25–March 13, 2025: Those looking for an extended Antarctic adventure and exploration of South America can sail from Fort Lauderdale, experiencing a Panama Canal Transit before heading south to Central and South America, extensively exploring Peru (including an overnight at Lima) and Chile. A four-day Antarctica experience rounds off the segment before sailing north to Uruguay and Argentina.
  • 33-Day Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) to Fort Lauderdale, May 5–June 7, 2025: Guests who dream of visiting the North Pole can embark in Ijmuiden, exploring the rugged coast of Norway before crossing the Arctic Circle and calling Honningsvåg (Nordkapp) in the North Cape. Volendam then visits Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and ports in Maine and Massachusetts before ending the voyage at Fort Lauderdale.

Holland America Line will open up grand voyages and pole-to-pole sailings to travelers hoping to book just a segment, making it easier to explore some of the coolest regions on Earth.

The cruise line will now allow travelers to book one of seven different segments on either its 2025 Grand World Voyage or its 2025 Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole sailings , Holland America shared with Travel + Leisure . Each segment lasts between 33 and 100 days.

“Our Grand Voyages are something our dedicated guests come back for every year while also attracting new guests who are eager to explore the world, but at over four months we recognize that not everyone has that time,” Paul Grigsby, the vice president of deployment and itinerary planning for Holland America Line, said in a statement shared with T+L. “By booking one of our 2025 Grand Voyage segments, cruisers can get a taste of the special atmosphere and community aboard these sailings at an incredible value.”

On the Grand World Voyage, which will depart on Jan. 4, 2025, and sail roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale on the Zuiderdam , travelers can pick from several different segments, including from Fort Lauderdale to either Singapore or Sydney, from Singapore to Athens, from Cape Town to Fort Lauderdale, and from Sydney to Cape Town. The shortest available segment is from Athens to Fort Lauderdale, which sails between the two cities over 20 days and includes stops in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and San Juan.

On The Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole voyage, which also sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale starting on Jan. 25, 2025, aboard the Volendam , travelers can choose to spend 47 days heading south from Florida to Buenos Aires, including seeing the Panama Canal; or spend 33 days traveling from Amsterdam back to Fort Lauderdale, exploring the coast of Norway and crossing the Arctic Circle along the way.

On this trip, travelers can also book several other segments, including from Buenos Aires to Barcelona, or from Fort Lauderdale to Amsterdam.

Beyond these trips, Holland America sails other extended voyages, including several trips to see the solar eclipse that will cross over Europe in 2026 , and a 28-day voyage planned for June 2025 inspired by legendary Norse explorer Erik Thorvaldsson , known as Erik the Red, who founded the first European settlement in Greenland.

Holland America Line Begins Pilot Test of Renewable Fuels on its Flagship, Rotterdam

Ship will use biofuel to reduce lifecycle emissions while sailing the Norwegian Heritage Fjords

Rotterdam, The Netherlands, May 2, 2024 — Holland America Line announced the start of a long-term biofuel test on its flagship, Rotterdam, leveraging 100% low carbon intensity biofuel while sailing within the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords. The ship bunkered the biofuel before leaving the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, April 27, 2024, and will operate one of its four engines using low carbon intensity oil derived from organic waste or residues and certified according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive while in the Fjords. The GoodFuels MR1-100 sustainable biofuel supplied by FincoEnergies will yield an estimated 86% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions.

“Holland America Line is committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and we are excited to demonstrate a next-generation fuel source that can help us toward our pursuit of net zero emissions,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “Converting items such as food waste into fuel is an innovative way to meet environmental challenges and we thank the Dutch government for its support.”

The initial tests will occur on one of the ship’s four engines during cruises this month, with the potential to expand to multiple engines during the summer while operating in the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords, specifically Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord.

What Are Biofuels?

Biofuels are derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% organic waste or residue, with no risk of land-use change or deforestation and no competition with food production. Produced from waste fats, oils, and grease leftover from feedstock processing, biofuels are associated with minimal emissions during production. This results in a very low carbon intensity, with an estimated reduction of 86% in emissions compared to marine gas oil (MGO).

Holland America Line’s existing ships operate on biofuels without modifications to the engine or fuel structure. Holland America Line continues to partner with companies to find ways to reduce emissions and develop alternative fuels and technologies.

“The GoodFuels MR1-100 fits the existing practice in shipping where heavier fuels are already used today” said Johannes Schurmann, Commercial Director International Marine at FincoEnergies. “Together with our clients, we optimize sustainability and cost of the biofuel, while not jeopardizing the performance in the engine and fuel system.”

“There is a need to look at all good alternatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future and we see biofuels as one of the alternatives that, with the right use and origin, will contribute to emission reductions, which we welcome. The Norwegian Maritime Authority takes a positive view of all measures taken by the industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Alf Tore, Acting Director General of Shipping and Navigation, Norwegian Maritime Authority.

Holland America Line’s Commitment to Sustainability

Holland America Line is one of the first Carnival Corporation brands to run a long-term 100% biofuel shipboard operation, having completed a successful first test in August 2022. Carnival Corporation's German line AIDA also tested GoodFuels biofuels on board AIDAprima in Rotterdam in 2022. While biofuels have been tested on large diesel engines at shoreside research facilities and in other shipping segments, these tests are among the first live tests on working cruise ships.

The two cruise lines’ biofuel tests support the overall environmental mission, goals and aspirations of Carnival Corporation. Carnival Corporation’s 2023 Sustainability Report released in April 2024 shows the company is making significant achievements toward its 2030 goals and the overall aspiration to achieve net zero emissions from ship operations by 2050.
