Trek X Caliber 6 Review | PedalChef

‍ Key Takeaways

  • If you’re shopping for a used hardtail bike, the X-Caliber 6 is an inexpensive option that performs well.
  • Newer bikes will get you more advanced components at the same MSRP if you want to upgrade.
  • Component highlights include the Sram X4 drivetrain and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

‍ If you’re looking for an entry-level hardtail, it can be hard to sort through the options. This review will help you decide if the Trek X-Caliber 6 is for you.

The Trek X-Caliber 6 is a solid bike overall for anyone just getting into mountain biking. Trek continued this bike after 2016, but you should be able to find it used for a good deal. If you want the modern replacement, the Trek Marlin 6 has similar performance with updated components and design.

I am a dedicated hardtail rider, and I love finding bikes that let you ride hard without needing complex rear suspension. For this review I dug into the details on the Trek X-Caliber 6 and compared it to similar bikes to give you everything you need to know before making a purchase.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ Trek X-Caliber 6 Performance

Coming in at $750 MSRP, the Trek X-Caliber 6 is definitely an entry-level mountain bike, so you shouldn’t expect mind-blowing performance. For what it is, the Trek X-Caliber 6 does a good job. With cross-country-oriented geometry and budget (though highly functional) components, it’s ready for fun laps on flowy trails.

It does offer a confident, stable ride that provides real off-road fun on moderate trails. Would I tackle aggressive Moab terrain on this bike? Probably not. But for laid-back riding around local singletrack trail centers, this is a competent choice.

With relatively old school cross-country-inspired geometry, this mountain bike isn’t designed for shredding downhill. If things get steep and rough, this bike will feel out of its element pretty quickly.

Rather than taking this on the roughest terrain you can find, you need to chase out smooth, flowy singletrack where you can feel in complete control and really have fun. The front suspension will get overwhelmed by big hits, but on smoother trails it does a great job of muting out buzz and keeping you comfortable.

While this bike is passable for descending, the race geometry and nimble aluminum frame really shine on the uphills. It isn’t super light, which is to be expected for the price, but still is quite lightweight for an entry-level bike. When you hit steep climbs, you’ll find yourself impressed at how eagerly this bike pedals up and over obstacles.

The aluminum frame is lightweight, stiff, and does a great job at getting your power down to the ground. If you’re coming from a heavier, older mountain bike, you’ll definitely

Trek X-Caliber 6 Frame and Geometry

The Trek X-Caliber 6 is built around a nimble aluminum frame with mechanically formed butted tubing. This frame is plenty stiff and strong for most trail riding, and the light weight will help you out on the uphills.

For an inexpensive entry-level bike, this frame has a surprising amount of modern features. Internal front derailleur routing keeps it looking clean and streamlined. Race geometry makes it feel quick and maneuverable. It even has size-specific wheel clearance, with 27.5-inch wheels for XS and S, and 29-inch wheels for size M and above.

Specs and Components

With budget mountain bikes, it’s always a balancing act for manufacturers to spec components that perform well enough while still hitting a price point. Overall, I think Trek did a good job with the X-Caliber 6.

Here are some of the component highlights to give you an idea of the build spec.

The X-Caliber 6 comes equipped with a Sram X4 with an 11-34 cassette in the back and 44/32/22 chainrings.

This is definitely not the most advanced or modern drivetrain available, but it’s pretty on-par with what you should expect from an entry-level bike from 2015. If you are looking for an up-to-date bike, there are 1x drivetrains available in the same MSRP price range, but for an older bike, this is a decent drivetrain.

One benefit of the 3x9 setup is that you get more gear range than comparable 1x drivetrains. The low-end climbing gears aren’t as low as I’d like, but the 44-tooth high end chainring gives you great high gears for speed. This is especially nice if you’ll use this bike for pavement riding and commuting.

This bike is a hardtail, so you have no rear suspension here. For the type of riding this bike is designed for, that can actually be considered an advantage. Hardtails are naturally more efficient and better at putting your power down for climbing and pedaling.

On the front end you get a 100 mm travel Suntour SR XCM fork. This is definitely a budget fork, but it offers decent performance for most riding. As a coil spring fork, it will be significantly heavier than air-sprung forks, but that’s what you can expect from a bike at this price.

Overall, I think you’ll be pleased with the performance of this fork. It is relatively smooth, and the travel helps even out rough sections of trails.

Brakes are a common place for manufacturers to cut corners on budget bikes. It’s nice to see that the X-Caliber 6 comes with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. If you are coming from mechanical brakes, you’ll be impressed by the awesome stopping power from these Shimano M355 brakes.

Many similar bikes come with cheaper mechanical disc brakes, so this is definitely a highlight of this build.

Wheels and Tires

The wheels on this bike are pretty standard Bontrager alloy rims and hubs. On size XS and S, you get 27.5-inch wheels, while size M and above come with 29-inch hoops.

These wheels come fitted with Bontrager XR1 tires. These are fast-rolling tires designed to emphasize efficiency and light weight over maximum grip. They still have decent side knobs for superior corner traction.

I wouldn’t count on these tires for ultimate grip in loose conditions, but they do a good enough job for most packed singletrack riding.

Competition for the Trek X-Caliber 6

The X-Caliber 6 fits into a crowded budget-mountain bike market. There are a lot of other options to choose from, so it’s important to know how it measures up to the competition.

The most important thing to note is that the Trek X-Caliber 6 was discontinued in 2015, replaced by the Marlin 6, so you won’t be able to find an X-Caliber for sale again. This will make a difference with the bikes we’re comparing it with, because they are newer and currently available for sale.

Trek X-Caliber 6 vs Trek Marlin 6

Trek Marlin 6

If you’re wanting to get a bike that’s similar to the X-Caliber 6 but in a more modern, updated package, the Trek Marlin 6 is the bike that replaced the X-Caliber 6 in Trek’s lineup.

These bikes share a lot of the same DNA with lightweight aluminum frames and cross country race-inspired geometry. They have similar spec’d forks, and brakes as well.

The biggest difference will appear in the drivetrain. While the X-Caliber 6 used an old-school 3x9 drivetrain, the Marlin 6 has a more modern setup with a Shimano Deore 1x10 speed drivetrain.

It really will come down to personal preference, but 1x10 drivetrains are the new industry standard for mountain bikes. If you are okay with older technology and design, you can probably find an X-Caliber used for a much lower price.

Trek X-Caliber 6 vs Giant Talon 2

Giant Talon 2

Giant is one of the most popular brands in the mountain biking world, and for good reason. Their business model enables them to offer seriously capable bikes at much lower prices than competitors.

The Giant Talon 2 competes directly with the X-Caliber 6 (or Marlin 6, nowadays) in the entry-level hardtail market, and there are a lot of similarities in geometry and components.

Again, the biggest difference is going to be the drivetrain. The Giant Talon 2 uses a Microshift Advent 1x9 setup compared to the X-Caliber’s 3x10. While this drivetrain doesn’t get as much publicity as products from Sram or Shimano, I’ve been very impressed with the Microshift Advent lineup.

This drivetrain is designed to be affordable, reliable, and durable. It offers the same gear range as Shimano’s 10-speed Deore, but with a thicker 9-speed chain and simplified adjustments.

With more aggressive geometry and sensible component selection, I think the Giant Talon 2 is definitely worth looking at if you are in the market for an entry-level bike.

Trek X-Caliber 6 vs Cannondale Trail 7

Cannondale Trail 7

The Cannondale Trail 7 is another popular bike that slots into a similar price bracket. As with most bikes in this market range, there are a lot of things that are similar, with just the small details making the difference.

This bike has basic hydraulic disc brakes, as coil-spring fork, and internal cable routing like the others compared here.

The Cannondale Trail 7 is a little behind the times with 2x8 shifting. Even the older X-Caliber gives you more range and better gear spacing with its 3x9 setup.

Overall, if you are looking for a budget hardtail bike, I think you’ll be better off with the Trek X-Caliber 6 than the Cannondale Trail 7.

Where to Buy the Trek X-Caliber 6

Unfortunately the Trek X-Caliber 6 is out of production and is no longer available to buy new. That said, it’s definitely worth looking around for a used one. Bicycle Blue Book estimates the value of a 2016 X-Caliber 6 at under $250, so you can get a great bike for not much money.

If you are looking to buy the modern successor of the X-Caliber 6, here are places you can find the Trek Marlin 6 for sale:

Trek X-Caliber 29er review

Lively big-wheeler

trek x caliber 6 29er

For 2011 the Gary Fisher brand has been subsumed into the Trek line-up as the Gary Fisher Collection. So the X-Caliber is now a Trek, but under the very Trek-esque graphics and paint all the Fisher tricks and tweaks are still there. Trek has imbued the X-Caliber with an undeniably racy feel, and it works. Snappy handling, reasonable weight and an impressive turn of speed make it a great bike for covering the ground, whether competing or not. Only the most hardened 29er sceptics would fail to be converted by this one.

Ride & handling: Light and fast, with unique front-end geometry making for rider-friendly handling

On paper the X-Caliber looks pretty laid back for a 29er. But the secret sauce is the bigger fork offset, delivering lively steering without resorting to an ultra-steep head angle and forcing the rider’s weight over the front. A lot of contemporary 29ers have a fairly attacking ride position, but the X-Caliber puts you rather more centred in the bike. While the top tube measures up long, there’s also a fairly relaxed seat angle.

We shifted the saddle well forward, which still left plenty of cockpit room. It’s quite a long bike, but manages not to feel particularly unwieldy. Indeed, the Trek really shone in tight, wooded singletrack, with low-speed sharp turns despatched with aplomb. The narrow 620mm bars helped too, although we suspect that many riders would swap to something a little wider.

The super-light steering takes a little bit of getting used to as speeds build, but the stability and easy rolling of the big wheels come into play here. We would still be tempted to pop a slightly wider bar on for general trail use though. The X-Caliber goes a long way to disproving most of the ideas that people have about big-wheeled bikes. It’s a long way from being heavy or ponderous.

Indeed, it’s got sharper handling than most 26in wheeled bikes, while the ability of the big hoops to roll smoothly over bigger bumps and holes makes it possible to just charge through sections that you might expect to either unweight over or go around. Mix in plenty of comfort and you’ve got a bike that’s a great choice for long days in the saddle.

Frame & equipment: Well-equipped, fine-looking bike

Trek has really been on top of aesthetics for a while now, and the X-Caliber is a particularly fine-looking bike. We are getting used to looking at 29ers, of course, but even so there’s something about the proportions of the Trek that just look right. The classically straight lines help, too. It’s not totally bereft of contemporary features, though, with a forged head tube that uses a semi-integrated headset to get the front end as low as possible.

The top tube also has an interesting cruciform cross-section, with all the cables and hoses running underneath. The X-Caliber is a little more expensive than a couple of its peers, but it’s got the spec to back it up, with SRAM-based transmission and RockShox Reba SL fork. There’s a subtle but important difference to the fork, though, in the shape of a custom crown that gives 51mm of offset rather than the usual 44mm (which is already bigger than the 38mm of the 26in versions). The effect is to give a similar amount of trail to a typical 26in XC bike without increasing the head angle, which is the usual 29er approach.

The finishing kit is, unsurprisingly, from the Bontrager stable. We’re quite taken by the hefty 15-degree sweep on the flat bars, giving a comfy wrist angle. A 27.2mm diameter seat post is unusually skinny for a contemporary aluminium frame, and delivers a handy bit of twang to the back end.

Bike Test: Trek X-Caliber 29er

trek x caliber 6 29er

A Simple Solution

Why would you ever feel sorry for a rider on a long-travel, multi-thousand dollar bike? Unfortunately, we feel sorry for these guys all the time. We often come across riders who have clearly purchased a bike with way too much travel and unwanted ballast for the type of riding they do. Now, the rider might be having a grand old time, but he could have spent thousands less on a bike like the  Trek X-Caliber and be having a much better experience. WHO IS IT MADE FOR?   Trek puts the X-Caliber 29er in their “race” category, but that only tells part of the story. This bike offers enough versatility that it could serve as your everyday singletrack/backcountry explorer. This is a great bike for everything but ultra-technical trails. They make a female-specific version of the X-Caliber and a cool single-speed variation called the Rig. They all sell for the same price. The Rig uses the drivetrain savings to slap on a Fox fork. Trek offers the X-Caliber in five sizes (three for the women’s version).

trek x caliber 6 29er

WHICH COMPONENTS STAND OUT?   The RockShox fork is made with Trek’s proprietary G2 off- set, but it takes a trained eye to catch it (the crown offset is the easiest clue to spot). The 3×10 SRAM/Shimano drivetrain gives the rider lots of options. Trek put a 7-inch brake rotor up front and a 6-incher in the rear. The Bontrager Mustang rims and Bontrager tires give the X-Caliber a race-ready appearance.

trek x caliber 6 29er

On the trail: The X-Caliber puts you in a racy position with a 90- millimeter, zero-rise stem and a handlebar (using thin grips) with the slightest rise of any “riser” bar. It’s more like a flat bar that hiccuped. The firmness of the Bontrager Evoke 1 saddle adds to the racy feel. The stays offer plenty of tire clearance while staying out of the rider’s way.

Moving out: The Bontrager tires offer low-profile, closely spaced knobs that get the big wheels rolling with the least amount of effort. This is a very quick-accelerating 29er, and it doesn’t mind if your style is in or out of the saddle. Either way, the drivetrain, wheels and frame don’t show weakness as you mash or spin the pedals.

Cornering: Trek’s G2 geometry gives the X-Caliber a light feel up front, but it is still far from the nervousness of steep-head- tubed cross-country race bikes. That’s a good thing. The bike is plenty responsive for quick changes, but it doesn’t require the rider to continually concentrate on the steering; it gives you room to relax. The tires grip better than their tread pattern would have you believe in both fast- and slow-rolling situations.

Descending: Remember that you only have a short-travel fork and a rigid rear end, but inside those boundaries, the X-Caliber X-cels. The fork does a great job of absorbing hard hits, while the wheels take care of the small stuff. Braking doesn’t feel powerful, and that’s a blessing on a bike like this. If there is too much power, then the burden falls on the rider to carefully dole out the pressure to the levers.

Climbing: The bike’s weight is excellent for a sub-$2000 29er. With its solid drivetrain and frame, you’ve got a great climbing package. The best advantage is being able to get out of the saddle for bursts of acceleration without worrying too much about breaking the rear tire loose. The only time we used the fork’s lockout feature was to see if it worked. It does, but you don’t really need it.

TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS?   The X-Caliber would have been fine with a 2×10 drive- train instead of the 3×10 drivetrain that delivers a tall gear you will only use on a paved downhill and a low gear that will have you rock crawling. Still, we understand that riders are reluctant to give up the three rings. Trek will no doubt sell more X-Calibers because of their drivetrain choice. Converting the rims and tires to tubeless would be a sensible upgrade, and good-quality clipless pedals would complement this package well.

BUYING ADVICE   The X-Caliber would serve as a great sport-level, cross-country race bike, but let’s face it, only a tiny percentage of mountain bikers race. This is a bike we could recommend to any rider who is looking for a great, all-around trailbike. If you own a heavy, long-travel trailbike that fills your heart with dread when you approach an uphill or wallows along the trail, you are using the wrong tool for the job. The X-Caliber is the right tool, and it needs nothing other than pedals to get it to work.

Trek X-Caliber 8 hardtail review

Sean White

  • February 14, 2023

There are plenty of plus-points to the Trek X-Caliber 8 hardtail mountain bike, like reliable components and a sure-footed feel

Product Overview

Overall rating:, trek x-caliber 8 2022.

  • Tubeless-ready wheels and tyres
  • Heaviest bike on test

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:.

The Trek X-Caliber 8 is a sure-footed 29er hardtail mountain bike, with plenty of reliable elements that boost its score to impressive levels, but a few missteps that hold it back from quite making it as one of the best hardtail mountain bikes we’ve tested. There’s a whole lot to like though.

Twenty nine inch wheels have long been an integral part of Trek’s mountain bikes, especially the hardtails. And where initially there was uncertainty and hesitation in the industry, Trek pushed on with this larger wheel size and the persistence paid off: with 29in wheels now accepted globally and across all mountain bike categories, not just for the cross country crowd.

trek x caliber 6 29er

Trek’s early 29in wheel bikes were XC hardtails and since then, the X-Caliber has shifted upmarket and now sit between the entry-level Marlin and the carbon Pro-Caliber. All three platforms run 100mm travel forks.

We’ve pulled in the X-Caliber 8 for this review, which is just shy of the Scott Scale 965 in price and shares many of the same components. With all four bikes on test running Shimano brakes and 1×12 transmissions, we were keen to take this consistency a step further and chose models with regular seatposts, rather than droppers. Primarily for comparing the weight of the bikes, but riding dynamics and overall value played a part too as we felt it really levelled the playing field, and maintained the XC hardtail design ethos.

trek x caliber 6 29er

With a steeply sloping top tube and a super-low standover height the X-Caliber is a very striking bike. It’s a silhouette that’s mirrored through all the brand’s hardtails – with the notable exception of the carbon Pro-Caliber – as is the wide size range that Trek is well known for offering. Seven frame sizes are available (with the XS and S rolling on 27.5in wheels to keep proportions in check) with a useful M/L option that’s a great problem solver for riders stuck between the popular M and L options. So hats off to Trek for this level of commitment to getting a good fitting bike.

trek x caliber 6 29er

When it comes to new frame standards, Trek has always been an early adopter, so it’s no surprise to see a tapered head tube and Boost hub spacing on the X-Caliber frame. But it’s Boost with a twist… here, Trek using 141mm rear dropout spacing with a traditional Q/R hub, rather than a 148mm bolt-thru design.

It’s not a deal breaker though, as the fixed rear triangle of a hardtail doesn’t need stiffening up like a full suspension design, and a quick online search reveals plenty of wheel upgrade options from the likes of Hunt, Hope and Bontrager for the 141 standard.

trek x caliber 6 29er

A modern touch that hasn’t been executed as well as on other bikes in test, is the internal frame routing for the cable and rear brake hose – they’re not clamped where they enter the down tube and rattle noisily on rough terrain, just like on the Trek Roscoe in our Hardtail of the Year test.

trek x caliber 6 29er

Trek has equipped the X-Caliber 8 with a RockShox fork and it’s listed as a Judy SL, so we expected to see an upgrade or two. However, all the tech is identical to the regular Judy forks seen on the Cube and Scott – a tapered aluminium steerer, steel upper legs, a Solo Air spring and the brand’s basic TurnKey damper.

trek x caliber 6 29er

The Trek is the only bike in test that doesn’t have a remote lockout lever though, just a simple dial on the top of the fork leg, with an on/off function and no graded adjustment between those points. At least it’s one less cable to maintain and gives more handlebar space for a dropper post remote lever.

And while the X-Caliber frame does not use a bolt-thru rear axle, the 100mm travel Judy fork does have the 15x110mm Boost hub standard – although the website lists the lighter tooled axle as standard, our test bike had the same QR lever operated version as the Scott Scale.

Shimano was slow to filter its 1×12 transmissions down to the lower price points, but it’s there now and proving to be a very popular choice, all four bikes in this test using Shimano drivetrains. The X-Caliber’s specification lists a Shimano chainset, but our bike shipped with a model from FSA, and it’s the only deviation from a complete Shimano drivetrain.

trek x caliber 6 29er

Trek has also gone with a smaller 30t chainring and combined with the Deore 10-51t cassette you get a super-low gear, which is useful on the climbs because at 13.53kg (29.82lb) the Trek is the heaviest bike in test.

Another wise move is the genuine Shimano chain which performs faultlessly in wet filthy conditions and plays well with the steel FSA chainring. The benchmark XT rear mech is good to see, as is the rubber chainstay protector, which is a detail the other three brands seemed to have overlooked.

Performance

The dropped top tube, wider 750mm bar, long wheelbase and slackish 68º head angle (the slackest of the four bikes) give the X-Caliber the look and feel of a trail bike. However, the Trek’s geometry and attitude is not in the same league as the most progressive 100mm trail hardtails such as Kona’s test-winning Mahuna .

trek x caliber 6 29er

Even on this size XL, the frame’s front triangle is very compact, especially when compared to the Giant XTC, but it still sports two sets of bottle cage mounts – essential on an XC bike. In fact, Trek has added plenty of mounts to the X-Caliber, with fittings for a rack and kickstand making it a very capable all-terrain bike.

With one of the lightest wheelsets on test, we expected some zip and liveliness from the X-Caliber but it lacked the immediate urgency of the Scott and Giant and on longer non-stop cross country blasts, its weight was noticeable, certainly towards the end of the ride.

You can’t knock the Trek’s sure-footed nature though – the lengthy wheelbase (for an XC hardtail) and wide bar aid stability, and it was only the Judy fork’s lack of refinement that held us back from diving into more challenging terrain. A slightly shorter stem would no doubt help here too.

trek x caliber 6 29er

Although the compact front end still has a tall 525mm seat tube, the seat stays are dropped, giving a tighter rear triangle. This certainly gives the X-Caliber a chuckable hardtail vibe, but the ride quality was a touch less compliant than the other bikes here.

With that in mind, there’s plenty of frame and fork clearance for higher volume tyres to help smooth the ride further, and Trek helpfully supplies the X-Caliber 8 with rim strips, valves and sealant so you can go tubeless straight from the box and reap the benefits immediately.

  • Best hardtail mountain bikes
  • Best mountain bike helmets: a bunch of brilliant brain-savers
  • How to avoid arm pump when mountain biking

With a sure-footed ride, reliable Shimano components and a sorted tubeless wheelset, it feels like there’s a trail bike hiding under the X-Caliber’s glossy frame finish just waiting to get out, but being held back by the fork and lack of a dropper post. Stepping up a model to the X-Caliber 9 would be our recommendation then, as it gets a dropper post and a more capable and refined fork. Ultimately, the Trek X-Caliber 8’s weight is noticeable and even with the same control tyres fitted to all of the test bikes, the Trek lacks the race-bike urgency of the Scott and Giant.

Welcome to the trek 29er fun. Not sure which version my Marlin would be on the new system probably about same as urs. I made life easy I bought a trunk rack for my 07 colbalt. And I've picked up a pacific brand mtb, I swear those huge frames are steal cause those things are heavy as ****. Funny thing is ur bike should weigh about what mine did stock, 34lbs roughly, mines at 28.5 ish now. Ull save like 1.5+lbs minimum off getting a decent fork cause those stock suntours are like boat anchors. And compared to most big box bikes 34lbs is still 5-10lbs lighter at least. These model treks the weight isn't in the frame its everything attached that's heavy. Forks, stem, tires, wheels and crankset. Forks and tires ( not sure tires on urs) made the biggest difference. I went a little crazy I could have bought a superfly for what I have invested in my bike now but the build was over 6 months and i enjoyed the learning to build and tune a bike. So get out and enjoy it, but stay hydrated and eat properly cause the more you ride, the more addicting it becomes, less u pay attention to your body. MIcycle313 said: Heya Tigris, yeah I think the Marlin would be closest match to the X-Cal 6 this year besides the Hydraulic Disc addition. So right on the department store bike weights haha. I do plan on taking advantage of the Suntour upgrade program, so long as I can get a fork that will match the geometry and if not then maybe I'll get lucky enough to find a RockShox fork with the G2 somewhere or just get used to the different ride with a regular one. I figure yes it'll cost me more in the long run than buying in to a new bike but at least I'll have everything I personally want on it and have it built up to my style. I took to the trails/paths again yesterday for about 8 miles (working up slowly as not to kill my body lol) and again it rode really well. I got to learn some of the behaviors a bit more and what it does and doesn't like... Such as a downhill grade on a paved path, the bike loves it but still a bit scary for me haha. Doesn't like it too much when I use the pedals to jump the bike over objects but could be how I landed. I was bummed out last night when I went to add my bike computer to the new Trek though, the sensor is too far away from the magnet that attaches to the spokes so it won't pick anything up. May have to mod the sensor a bit to get it closer, or just mount my cellphone so I have some sort of reference of speed, distance etc. You are so right on the addiction...I'm going to one of the Metroparks today to put in some more ride time before the work week, making sure to eat a good balance and have about 6 bottles of water ready to go for the trails (seriously need to get a camelback lol). Oh and of course, can't forget the picture View attachment 828829 Click to expand...

I am 5'10'' and new I had to build a 29 Paragon 4.5 years ago (the 26inch bike looked like a child's bike)--- at your height the 26inch bikes are like the 'clown riding the bike at the circus'... --But pound for pound I think that TREK has the best offering at any price point. I thought about buying a bike first that had the Suntour fork (and was way over 210lbs then..)---they said to replace the spring. But sooner or later you will want to swap a REBA on it (then you will really see a 'Night and Day' difference with the handling)

my local bike shop got one of these in and i saw the mechanic working on it. the beautiful paint glared through all the foam packaging and had me interested. This bike is on the showroom now and every time i see it, i think about how nice of a bike it looks. Can't beat trek as far as bang for your buck. not that i've seen anyways

go out and ride that thing today! and obviously you can find good deals online but from my research, if you go to a bike shop and plan on purchasing a new year model bike, then trek, to me, is the best bang for your buck at certain price ranges.

In Europe, the X-Caliber 5 also has hydraulic brakes, the Tektro HDC300, the forks are also different from the US. (Mine had Suntour XCT not Blaze etc). Not sure how this stacks things up compared to the 2013 bikes on price.

I am loving the hell out of my xcaliber 6. Ive had it for just over a month now, and ive taken it on some desert trails in phoenix, but for the most part, I use it to commute ~20 miles a day. I bought some 700x38c specialized nimbus armadillo tires for it, and though its a little heavy for a true commuter, it cruises! its so nice having wheels that can take both 29x2" MTB tires AND hybrid road tires.. takes about 10 minutes to switch out the tires, and im ready for the trails!

I have to agree on the on the non-G2 fork spec - I much prefer the non G2 handling.

I just picked up a 2012 X-cal left over earlier this year, and -- of course -- immediately put Bonty H2s on it to use on-road to cross train for moto track days. I got a pretty good deal on it, and had a set of old and beaten pedals from my Kona Caldera, so investment was low. Man, that 29" makes SUCH a difference, and I love the locking out fork! My only complaint is the fact that the Avid Elixir 1s squeal and shake the hell out of the bike; working with the LBS on that, but I have a feeling there's a Shimano swap coming in my future. Congrats on the new ride!!!

the new xcaliber 6's come with shimano hydro brakes, and im in love with them (even though the resin pads are more finicky than the semi metallic pads of the BB7's) .. avid is awesome-for mechanical disks.. shimano is the one to go to for hydraulic brakes. ive read several posts saying that entry level shimanos beat top of the line avid's any day (hydraulic only) for mechanical, BB7's still reign supreme.

Oh, and I know what you mean about tall! Mine's the 23" frame, and I LOVE it -- but it looked so HUGE next to the 21" Kona. Fits me SO MUCH better, however.

I just retrofitted my 2012 I bought in July with XT m785 front and rear. Wow; hell of an improvement.

On my 3rd X-Cal frame, first two (Fishers) broke at rear of seat post as many have. I love the feel of the bike and Fisher/Trek has taken care of me with a new frame each time so no complaints. Still using my original Fox RL 29 fork after having it completely rebuilt by Fox (upgraded all internals and switched to a 15 mm axle, made a huge diff). Bike rides fantastic and after several upgrades over the years I am very happy with it. I put about 100 miles a week all off road on it so I am always replacing something just due to wear so I know what works for me and what doesn't parts wise. A few upgrades that made the bike for me- Dump the brakes and get Shimano XT's- Use a 180 rotor on the front if you ride really hilly stuff. The 160 had a real hard time slowing my 210 lbs on steep down hills. 2x10 SRAM X9 drive train- switched it all over to X9 and have had zero issues Using a Lynskey TI post and it has given me a lot more comfort on long rides, was using a Thomson Elite (great post just too stiff for me) Go tubeless its well worth it- currently using Easton EA 70 wheels and although not the lightest wheels they are very durable and not too pricey. Have not changed a flat on the trail in 2 yrs!! Carbon bar and stem- again makes rides a bit less harsh. Of course all of these changes were done over time as with each rebuild I picked up some new stuff. If I were to pick the first upgrade I'd do it would be brakes, followed by wheels, then fork. The Shimano XT brakes are fantastic, easy to adjust, easy to maintain and they work great. Wheels save weight and for the money the EA 70's are a good deal, very easy to set up tubeless. Having the fork switched to a 15mm axle also made a huge diff. in handling, feels very tight up front. Weight is not a huge issue for me as I ride for myself and am not a racer, I think as set up now its around 24-25 lbs.

The X-Cal looks good in that red and in 21". I prefer bikes that are Blue/Black/White (I have the F9, Cobia, and a 3700, my friend has a Hardrock), but that candy red is a nice color for sure.

is everyone still enjoying there xcaliber 6 ?...I just picked one up on clearance and I luv it

The X-Cal I mentioned earlier in this thread was returned for another as it had some build issues, but the replacement is still in the stable! I ride my Slash daily and the X-Cal about twice a week - it's still great fun, fast and reliable - it'll be my winter bike when the weather gets colder!

Customer Bicycle Reviews

I had a fantastic and seamless experience of cycle delivery and it was delivered in an amazing turn around time of 2 days, since I live in Chennai, the cycle was promptly shipped in a safe and unharmed manner. The sales and support was brilliant. I purchased the NUZE S3 cycle. I got information from the cycle experts since I am a newbie. My overall experience was amazing and nothing like the other customers mentioned in this site.

Kudos to the CMB team and i will ask all my colleagues and friends to buy theirs here only.

Recently bought Road bike from CMB & I can say, I am one of the happiest customers of CMB.

My experience was really superb from booking to delivery to post-sales support.

As this was my first road bike and was unaware that pedals are not included with the cycle, which I came to know after booking. To my surprise CMB had included the pedals from their side “Fitted and ready to ride”.

Thanks CMB team.

CMB is a website which helps us to choose the right bicycle, had a hassle free experience while buying my Waltx Summit 27.5 from CMB, along with the cycle, was thrown in a host of goodies worth almost 4000, the buying experience was seamless and the cycle was delivered in just 6 days including a Sunday and this while there was a heavy downpour in Chennai, still the CMB Team showed ownership and updated and kept me informed of all the checkpoints. On delivery I found out that a accessory was broken, CMB Team arranged a replacement within few hours of sending the mail to them with pictures and video of the broken item, shows volumes about a company and its staff of providing a perfect seamless solution and ensuring that the customer always stays happy.

I have now become a permanent client of CMB and all my future cycles and of my near and dear ones will be bought from ChoooseMyBicycle only.

With an informative and easily guiding portal, CMB comes across as the most user friendly platform for cycle riders. I bought Giant ATX 2021 in March End, however I have been engaged with the portal for cycling information for a couple of months ahead of my purchase decision. CMB has guided me systematically in my cycle purchase experience that has been quite satisfying even in the Covid 19 situation which adversely affected their services. Based on personal experience, I recommend CMB, for people who intend to make an informed purchase. Also, CMB should work upon direct integration with the OEMs to eliminate the teething issues, if any, arising in executing their transitional responsibility.

Got the delivery in 5days and as said 99% assembled only pedals need to fit and handle bar needs to tighten up.. and all this is in lockdown And the service team is very responsive.

Bought a Firefox road runner pro d from the website. Happy with the product. All major installations were done by their team. Only handle bar and pedal need to fit by me. At that time my pedal was not fit it into the crank arm. When I reported the issue they have sent me the original crank arm with support of Firefox at free of cost. They have best team to support client. Advise to buyers. They will only sent product after their quality check. But there will be a 1% chance of a mistake, so record a non stop video of unboxing of your bicycle . If any problem with the product.,Then you can prove it is their fault with the video footage. In my case I was unable to prove it is their mistake . So I have to accept that was my mistake but they really amazed me by giving the original part at free of cost

The climate of Sochi ( Russia ) Sochi is a large city located in the southwestern part of Russia on the Black Sea in the northern part of the Caucasus. It is an important seaside resort on the Black Sea which is also known as the Russian Riviera. Sochi is both a popular seaside resort and a popular winter sports destination. This combination is very unique in the world. Mainly Russian tourists visit Sochi. However, since it will host the 2014 Winter Games the city is aiming for more foreign tourists. Sochi is known as one of the longest cities in the world. The agglomeration stretches for 150 kilometers. Most tourists visit the city during the summer. Summers are very pleasant with temperatures far above 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) Peaks in temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) are not uncommon. During the summer the temperature of the Black Sea is also above 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Sochi has a warm continental climate which is very warm by Russian standards. Several sources even state that Sochi has a subtropical climate. However, this is incorrect, but with an average annual temperature of 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit) the climate is anything but cold. If you travel to the north toward the northern part of Caucasus temperatures are much lower. This is mainly caused by high altitudes here. This also causes this part of the Caucasus to be an ideal winter sports destination. Because of the influence of the Black Sea extremes are much more uncommon here than in the more northerly located cities in Russia. Precipitation figures are highest during the winter. Average annual precipitation figures are low in Sochi.

News, notes and thoughts:

8 July, 2012   / Unexpected flooding that occurred on July 6-7 in Krasnodar krai killed at least 150 people mostly in small town of Krymsk. The water level in Krymsk region rose to 7 meters, entire villages were washed away. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the flood occurred at night, when most people were asleep in their homes.

History of Krasnodar Krai

The territory of today’s Krasnodar Krai was inhabited as early as the Paleolithic, about 2 million years ago. It was inhabited by various tribes and peoples since ancient times. There were several Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast, which later became part of the Kingdom of the Bosporus. In 631, the Great Bulgaria state was founded in Kuban. In the 8th-10th centuries, the territory was part of Khazaria.

In 965, the Kievan Prince Svyatoslav defeated the Khazar Khanate and this region came under the power of Kievan Rus, Tmutarakan principality was formed. At the end of the 11th century, in connection with the strengthening of the Polovtsy and claims of Byzantium, Tmutarakan principality came under the authority of the Byzantine emperors (until 1204).

In 1243-1438, this land was part of the Golden Horde. After its collapse, Kuban was divided between the Crimean Khanate, Circassia, and the Ottoman Empire, which dominated in the region. Russia began to challenge the protectorate over the territory during the Russian-Turkish wars.

More historical facts…

In 1783, by decree of Catherine II, the right-bank Kuban and Taman Peninsula became part of the Russian Empire after the liquidation of the Crimean Khanate. In 1792-1793, Zaporozhye (Black Sea) Cossacks resettled here to protect new borders of the country along the Kuban River. During the military campaign to establish control over the North Caucasus (Caucasian War of 1763-1864), in the 1830s, the Ottoman Empire for forced out of the region and Russia gained access to the Black Sea coast.

Prior to the revolutionary events of 1917, most of the territory of present Krasnodar krai was occupied by the Kuban region, founded in 1860. In 1900, the population of the region was about 2 million people. In 1913, it ranked 2nd by gross harvest of grain, 1st place for the production of bread in the Russian Empire.

Kuban was one of the centers of resistance after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. In 1918-1920, there was a non-Bolshevik Kuban People’s Republic. In 1924, North-Caucasian Krai was founded with the center in Rostov-on-Don. In 1934, it was divided into Azov-Black Sea Krai (Rostov-on-Don) and North Caucasus Krai (Stavropol).

On September 13, 1937, the Azov-Black Sea region was divided into Rostov Oblast and Krasnodar Krai that included Adygei Autonomous Oblast. During the Second World War, the region was captured by the Germans. After the battle for the Caucasus, it was liberated. There are about 1,500 monuments and memorials commemorating heroes of the war on the territory of Krasnodar Krai.

In 1991, the Adygei Autonomous Oblast withdrew from Krasnodar Krai and became the Republic of Adygea.

Krasnodar Krai - Features

Krasnodar Krai is located in the south-western part of the North Caucasus. The territory is washed by the Azov and Black Seas. The length of the region from north to south - 327 km, from west to east - 360 km. The Republic of Adygea, another federal subject of Russia, is located entirely within the Krasnodar region.

The Kuban River divides Krasnodar Krai into two parts: the northern - lowland (2/3 of the territory), located on the Kuban-Azov plain, and the southern - foothills and mountains (1/3 of the territory), located in the western highlands of the Greater Caucasus. The highest point is Mount Tsakhvoa (3,345 m).

The population is concentrated in the basin of the Kuban (also known as the Cossack land). The main cities and towns of Krasnodar Krai are Krasnodar (974,000), Sochi (433,500), Novorossyisk (277,000), Armavir (186,000), Anapa (95,900), Eisk (83,200), Kropotkin (76,300), Gelendzhik (75,100), Slavyansk-na-Kubani (67,200), Tuapse (60,400).

Krasnodar Krai is the warmest region of Russia. The climate is mostly temperate continental, on the Black Sea coast from Anapa to Tuapse - semi-arid Mediterranean climate, south of Tuapse - humid subtropical. Winters are mild and summers are hot. The average temperature in January in the plains is minus 3-5 degrees Celsius, on the Black Sea coast - 0-6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22-24 degrees Celsius.

Krasnodar Krai - Economy and Tourism

There are reserves of oil, natural gas, iodine-bromine water, marble, limestone, sandstone, gravel, silica sand, iron ore, rock salt, mercury, gypsum, gold. Krasnodar krai is Russia’s oldest oil producing region (since 1865).

The local economy is based on the industrial, construction, fuel and energy, agriculture, transport, resort and recreational, tourist sectors.

The seaports of the Krasnodar region provide direct access, through the Azov and the Black Seas, to international trade routes and handle more than 35% of foreign trade and transit cargoes of all Russian seaports. The air gateway of the region is Krasnodar International Airport (Pashkovsky Airport) - one of the largest airports in Russia.

Tourism is an important sector of the economy of Krasnodar krai. It is actively developing on the coast of the Black and Azov Seas, as well as in mountain and steppe districts of the region. The main centers of tourism are the resorts of federal significance (Sochi, Gelendzhik and Anapa) and the resorts of regional significance (Yeisk, Goryachiy Klyuch and Tuapse district).

Due to a combination of favorable climatic conditions, availability of mineral waters and curative mud, Krasnodar krai is the most popular resort and tourist region of Russia and in fact the only one in Russia seaside spa and recreational center.
