Live reviews

Dusting off the glittery cobwebs and reconciling past differences in a well-documented ITV series saw the quintet, Steps reunite for the first time in 10 years to start a new chapter for the iconic UK pop band. Overcoming personal issues within and outside the band, Claire, Fay, ‘H’, Lee and Lisa were finally ready in 2011 to move Steps forward.

They taught us to “5,6,7,8” and how to “Stomp” combined with catchy as hell choruses and camp cheesy dance moves, you can expect to find yourself on your feet for an entire show, dancing your socks off. It doesn’t much convincing for the audience to take part, with emphatic crowd sing-a-longs to “Heartbeat” and “Better Best Forgotten”. Taken aback by nostalgia, the audience relive their youth mirroring the dance routines in “One For Sorrow” and “Deeper Shade Of Blue”. It wouldn’t be a Steps show without a medley or two, guaranteeing you’ll definitely hear one of your favourites even if it’s just a snippet. With Claire Richard’s powerful and effortless lead vocals carrying the band it reaffirms Steps’ defining and recognisable sound. Costume changes are imperative for Steps both flamboyant and co-ordinated whether its glittery, leather clad or uniformed, they go certainly go all out. Saving their anthemic cover of the Bee Gees classic “Tragedy” til last, brings out everyone’s best karaoke rendition complete with dance moves. They can be forgiven for using a backing track- it’s part of the package but you know for certain that they’ll churn out an energetic and steptacular live performance. You’re guaranteed to have the time of your life at a Steps show, think Butlins red coats- all smiling, all dancing, all singing, pure cheesy entertainment and that’s exactly what you’ll get!

With them being one of the biggest pop groups of the 90s, Steps definitely have provided kids who were growing up during that time with some everlasting memories. Just wait until “5,6,7,8” drops at a party and watch the room break into the line dance from the video. It was something of a phenomenon at the time.

With a catalogue of pop hits under their belt, a Steps live show is never going to fail to entertain. I saw Steps back in 1999 when they were at the height of their success and I remember back then, every kid in the arena knew the routines and words to every song. Steps really were a pop phenomenon in the UK back then, second only to the Spice Girls, and looking back now, they were deserving of their success.

When Steps announced that they would be reuniting, I can’t lie, I was really excited. I saw them live at the London Palladium back in 2012 and more than a decade on, they still delivered, proving that they really did succeed in creating timeless pop anthems! The nostalgia in the room was clear, as the twenty-something’s in the crowd were taken on a journey back through their childhoods with songs such as “Tragedy”, “One for Sorrow” and “Deeper Shade of Blue”. Their were younger children in the room as well, showing that Steps are still having an impact in this current day, competing with some of the biggest pop stars.

Some may be ashamed to reveal they were Steps fans back in the day, but not me. I still am. Appreciate good pop music for what it is and if you get a chance to see Steps, I really think you should take it!

Steps announce first set of ‘25th Anniversary Tour’ dates

Connor Gotto

Steps have revealed the first set of live dates for their ‘25th Anniversary Tour’.

The group are marking the milestone in 2022 with a series of outdoor summer shows – just months after wrapping the ‘What The Future Holds’ arena trek.

Don't Miss...

Father john misty announces new album mahashmashana, spring 2025 tour, coldplay announce huge summer 2025 stadium dates.

They revealed: “Next summer, join us to celebrate 25 YEARS OF STEPS… More tour dates to be announced soon…”

Shows include stops across the UK at events such as Back 2 and Kubix Festivals, along with Carfest North and South and Birmingham Pride.

They’ll be Steps’ first outdoor shows since their 2018 ‘Summer of Steps’ tour.

The group previously admitted they’re keen to perform more festival dates , with Lisa Scott-Lee saying: “We’ve never really done festivals. I’d love to do one so maybe we will get a chance to put on our own [festival]… Who knows!”

On their other plans to celebrate 25 years, the singer added: “There’s plenty in the pipeline that’s new. Big plans are already in place for that. I can’t say that much or I’d get in trouble. [But] it’s nice to keep a bit of mystery, but we like to keep it fun and give back to our fans who have been so loyal over the years.”

Four friends. One Summer.

So much love in store....

About the show

Happiness is only a heartbeat away with HERE & NOW , the hilarious and heart-warming new musical based on the songs of the multi-million-selling pop phenomenon, Steps. Don't miss the world premiere of this sparkling celebration of love and friendship at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre, prior to a West End run.

Welcome to seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, where it's Friday night, the vibe is right, and everyone's dancing in the aisles. But when Caz discovers the shelves are stocked with lies and betrayal, the summer of love she and her friends dreamed of suddenly feels like a tragedy. Have they all lost their chance of a 'happy ever after'? With Caz, Vel, Neeta and Robbie around, who knows what love has in store...

Directed by the award-winning Rachel Kavanaugh (Half a Sixpence, The Great British Bake Off Musical ) and written by Shaun Kitchener  ( Hollyoaks ), HERE & NOW  features many of their iconic hits, including 5, 6, 7, 8, Better Best Forgotten, and Last Thing On My Mind.

This brand new musical is produced by Steps themselves, ROYO and pop legend Pete Waterman.

Steps (Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins’, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee) are the UK’s most successful mixed sex pop group of all time, with 14 top five singles, 4 number one albums, 22 million record sales, 500 million streams & 11 sold-out national arena tours under their belts.  The band’s hits include #1 singles  Tragedy/Heartbeat  and  Stomp , the gold certified  One For Sorrow  &  Better Best Forgotten , the silver certified  5,6,7,8 ,  Last Thing On My Mind ,  Love’s Got A Hold Of My Heart ,  Chain Reaction  & many more. In 2011, the band scored another #1 album with their  The Ultimate Collection  release, followed by a Sky 1 documentary series  Steps Reunion  - the highest rated original programme on Sky that year. In 2017, the band marked 20 Years of Steps and released their first single in over 6 years  Scared Of The Dark  which hit #1 on iTunes. They released their  Tears On The Dancefloor  album in April which is Gold certified, reached #1 on UK iTunes and spawned 3 A-List singles on BBC Radio 2. 2017 ended on a high for the band, as they embarked on their 22 date sold out  Party On The Dancefloor Tour  across arenas in the UK & Ireland selling over 300,000 tickets - making it one of the biggest pop tours of the year. The band have since continued to release new music including two further iTunes #1 singles,  the Sia-penned  What The Future Holds  in 2020 and the Michelle Visage duet  Heartbreak In This City  in 2021 and scored a further two #2 charting UK albums 2020’s  What The Future Holds  and 2021’s  What The Future Holds Pt 2.   Across both albums the band scored 7 A-List singles on BBC Radio 2. The led to the massive  What The Future Holds  UK arena tour in late 2021.  In 2022 Steps celebrated their 25th anniversary with a headline summer tour and released the #1 album  Platinum Collection  which means they join ABBA, Rolling Stones and Stereophonics as the only groups in UK history to score #1 albums in four consecutive decades.

Three years after they staged one of the most successful comebacks of the decade, enduring British pop legends Steps – aka H, Claire, Faye, Lee and Lisa – return once again with their sixth album, What the Future Holds , out 27 th November, and a huge arena tour including two dates at The O2 on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November 2021.  Steps will be joined on tour by the brilliant Sophie Ellis-Bextor as special guest.

Their hotly anticipated sixth album  What The Future Holds  album will be available on all digital platforms plus CD, Vinyl (including a limited edition transparent pink edition) and Cassette (including a special collector’s box with five separate transparent pink solo cassettes with an intro from each band member). The album can be preordered now from the Steps Superstore here .

If you thought 2017's hi-energy Tears on the Dancefloor album, which was led by the giant glitter ball-sized banger Scared of the Dark and concluded with an arena tour that shifted over 200,000 tickets, was a step into the big leagues then brace yourselves because this new album's first single, the album's thundering, gloriously dramatic title track, was written by pop queen Sia. Built around a typically Steps-esque bittersweet refrain of “one foot in the past and one foot in the future”, it felt like the perfect statement for a band who have taken a wave of nostalgia and alchemised it into an album full of future anthems. What The Future Holds quickly hit the top spot on iTunes and is approaching 1 million streams on Spotify. The video can be viewed here . Alongside Sia, the versatile album also sees them reunite with the likes of Fiona Bevan (Ed Sheeran), Ina Wroldsen (Shakira) and Karl Twigg, who worked on their first three albums, plus experiment with the likes of Hannah Robinson (Kylie). “ We will never forget the past with Steps, it's what made us,” says Steps, “ but we've got to look to the future too.”

If What The Future Holds represented the future for Steps, then the current single, Something In Your Eyes , gleefully celebrates the past via a classic, ABBA-esque chorus, a joyous key change and a brilliantly unexpected staggered outro. “ It's so much fun, it’s a real nod to old Steps, but it works so well alongside What The Future Holds. You can't help but sing along to it and feel uplifted by it.” a dd Steps. Something In Your Eyes premiered on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show and has since been added to the Radio 2 playlist. The official music video, which was directed by Carly Cussen, is out now (view here ).

Launching during the halcyon days of pop in 1997 with their line-dancing classic 5,6,7,8, Brit award winners Steps set about re-turfing the music landscape via 14 UK top 10 singles and three multi-platinum albums in three years including #1’s Tragedy and Stomp. Fast forward twenty years, the band returned with the mighty  Tears On The Dancefloor,  which hit #1 on the physical and iTunes album charts and went Gold within a matter of weeks, becoming the second biggest-selling independent album of 2017 behind Stormzy. Their subsequent ‘Party On The Dancefloor’ tour saw the band sell out twenty-two arenas. 23 years on from their debut, 2020 sees them return with  What The Future Holds .

Steps Tour 2021: Where are they touring and how to get tickets for What the Future Holds?

It’s fair to say that 2020 has been a real Tragedy, but Steps have plans to try and save the day with a new album and tour announcement .

The band – comprised of Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian “H” Watkins, Faye Tozer, and Lee Latchford-Evans – were a huge staple in the pop scene of the 90s and early 2000s, before launching a hugely successful comeback in 2017, with their album Tears on the Dancefloor reaching number two on the charts and the band embarked on a sell-out arena tour.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer than the count of 5, 6, 7, 8 but this is what we know about the band’s Sia-penned single, the new album, and planned tour…

When is the new Steps single, What the Future Holds, out?

Steps will release their new single, What the Future Holds, tomorrow, September 9.

The band confirmed their comeback to The Sun, and revealed hitmaker Sia had a huge hand in their comeback.

Sia , famous for her own hits including Chandelier as well as writing for everyone from Britney to Beyonce, penned their comeback track which will be the first track from their sixth album of the same name.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS 🔮  We couldn’t keep it a secret any longer!! Our new album What The Future Holds arrives on November 27th, and it’s available to pre-order from 8am tomorrow! ✨✨✨ pic.twitter.com/jcySWX9t96 — Steps (@OfficialSteps) September 7, 2020

Sitting down with The Sun’s Bizarre to announce their comeback, Claire said: ‘She wrote the track for herself but realised it wasn’t really for her and gave it to us. It’s not like it was in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It was her who said, “We should give this to Steps because it would really suit them”’.

Lisa continued: ‘I am such a huge Sia fan. Her music is completely up my street, I have so much admiration for her as an artist and a songwriter so I’m in pop heaven.’

Steps new album: when will it be out?

Following the release of their new single on September 9, the album, also called What the Future Holds, will be released on November 27.

The band had originally planned an earlier release, but like most things this year, coronavirus had a hand in delaying the fun.

Faye explained to Bizarre: ‘It was really hard because it was literally the day after lockdown that we were going to start the whole campaign. We had a call from the record company in America saying, “We need to make a choice, either it goes ahead or it doesn’t”’.

On the album, the group have teamed up with pop songwriter Karl Twigg, who provided songs for their first three albums.

H has said of one of the tracks recorded that it ‘is one of [his] favourites. I love that it’s Eighties inspired.’

Steps announce comeback with new album and tour

New album What The Future Holds will be released in November, with a Steps tour planned for 2021, the band have revealed.

Tuesday 8 September 2020 12:11, UK

Five, six, seven, eight - better get in line, as Steps have announced their comeback.

The pop fivesome, famous for hits such as One For Sorrow, Tragedy and Love's Got A Hold On My Heart back in the 1990s, will release a new album later this year and tour at the end of 2021.

"We couldn't keep it a secret any longer!!" a message on the official Steps Twitter account said on Monday evening.

"Our new album What The Future Holds arrives on November 27th, and it's available to pre-order from 8am tomorrow!"

It followed a series of cryptic posts featuring the Steps stars, referencing the past and the future, with one including a crystal ball.

Steps - Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian "H" Watkins - were formed in the 1990s as a pop group with choreographed routines that fans could dance along to.

They released three platinum-selling albums and had two number one singles in the UK before they split up in 2001.

Steps last reunited in 2017, and released the album Tears On The Dancefloor.

Posting the news of the latest comeback on her own Instagram page, Richards said: "It's been a long time coming but we are so proud to present the next chapter to the Steps story."

Her post has received more than 28,000 "likes" - and a message from Blue's Anthony Costa, who said: "Wicked."

Watkins posted : "EXCITED MUCH??? WE ARE!!"

There will surely be cuts from Steps’ new album at each of the shows, but you can count on the old-school favourites getting an airing too: Better the Devil You Know, 5, 6, 7, 8, Tragedy, Chain Reaction, Stomp and all the other hits from the group’s heyday all featured during their last run of shows in 2018. Expect a smattering of tracks from their more recent albums, too.

Who is the support act?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor will be the special guest at each of the shows.

Singer-songwriter Allison Russell had a song called “Persephone” on her debut solo album, so there may be some destiny in the fact that she will soon step into a role with that name in the Broadway production of “ Hadestown ,” starting on Nov. 12.

Meanwhile, prior to going into “Hadestown,” Russell will finish up her months-long stint as the opening act for Hozier on his international tour, including a three-night stand at L.A.’s Kia Forum that begins tonight. The Hozier tour wraps up Sept. 26 in Oklahoma City, and then Russell has one last show Sept. 28 at the Pilgrimage Music Festival in Tennessee before she begins preparation for Broadway.

She is also up for artist of the year this week at the Americana Honors & Awards, to be handed out in a ceremony Wednesday night in Nashville.

Said Russell in a statement: “I first heard Anaïs Mitchell sing ‘Why We Build The Wall’ in 2008 at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was opening the show at a concert series called ‘Sings Like Hell’ (really) for my partner’s band JT & the Clouds. I was transfixed. When Anaïs told me later that night that she was working on a ‘folk opera’ based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, all my hairs stood on end — I had a premonition that it would be become a work that would outlive us all.”

The role of Persephone will be played by “Hadestown” alumnus Lana Gordon, who was featured on a national tour of the production, between Yola’s exit on Oct. 20 and Russell’s first show on Nov. 12.

Following are Russell’s U.S. tour dates the spring, mostly rescheduled from this fall, with the Ryman Auditorium as an addition:

APR 30 – Higher Ground Ballroom – South Burlington, VT MAY 2 – Theatre of Living Arts – Philadelphia, PA MAY 3 – Lincoln Theatre – Washington, DC MAY 4 – Royale – Boston, MA MAY 6 – Webster Hall – New York, NY MAY 8 – The Vic Theatre – Chicago, IL MAY 9 – First Avenue – Minneapolis, MN MAY 12 – Gothic Theatre – Englewood, CO MAY 13 – The Commonwealth Room – Salt Lake City, UT MAY 15 – The Egyptian Theatre – Boise, ID MAY 16 – The Showbox – Seattle, WA MAY 17 – Wonder Ballroom – Portland, OR MAY 19 – The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA MAY 20 – Belasco Theater – Los Angeles, CA MAY 23 – Scoot Inn – Austin, TX MAY 24 – Tannahill’s Tavern & Music Hall – Fort Worth, TX MAY 25 – The Heights Theater – Houston, TX MAY 28 – Ryman Auditorium – Nashville, TN

Easterby to Take Over as Interim Ireland Head Coach

Judy rotich | 1 hour ago.

The former Ireland flanker will take on the position starting December 1 after the Autumn Nations Series

By Priscilla Jepchumba

The IRFU has announced that Simon Easterby will step into Andy Farrell's position as head coach of Ireland on a temporary basis next year. Farrell is stepping down from his Ireland duties in 2025 to lead the British and Irish Lions on their tour of Australia. Many had anticipated Easterby would assume the role in Farrell's absence, and the IRFU has now confirmed this.

Easterby was excited about the new appointment and expressed his appreciation for the role. “To be asked to lead the Ireland team is a huge honor and one that I am thrilled to accept,” said Easterby.

“It is the highest achievement of my coaching career to date, and I’m looking forward to working with the talented backroom team and players while Andy is away with the British and Irish Lions.

“I have greatly enjoyed being a part of the men’s national team journey over the last ten years, and I believe that there are even brighter days ahead as we build towards a huge few months.

“There’s a lot to play for before December and we’re looking forward to providing the next crop of future Irish players with a chance to impress against talented international opponents in South Africa and then across the four Autumn Nations Series matches at Aviva Stadium,” he added.

IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys has confirmed Simon's upcoming promotion, recognizing his growth and esteemed position as a coach within the Ireland set-up for the past decade.

The former Ireland flanker will take on the position starting December 1 after the Autumn Nations Series. Prior to the autumn, Easterby will lead the Emerging Ireland team on a tour of South Africa in October, where they will compete against Currie Cup teams the Pumas and the Cheetahs, as well as Super Rugby Pacific's Western Force.

“I am delighted to confirm Simon’s promotion later this year and it is recognition of his evolution and high standing as a coach within the Ireland set-up over the last 10 years,” stated Humphreys.

“Today’s announcement ensures a smooth transition and continuity as Ireland looks to build towards an exciting few months ahead. Over the last decade, Simon has moved from forwards coach to defense coach, and he has played a key role in Ireland’s success during that time.

“As head coach for the Emerging Ireland tour to South Africa in 2022, he had a front-row seat as a number of players pushed on to achieve international selection in the intervening period. It is our hope that Simon and his coaching team can help reap more positive performances in the upcoming Emerging Ireland tour to South Africa and then in the months to come,” he said.

“You can rehearse until you're blue in the face, but once you hit the stage and the lights go out, all bets are off”: Steve Vai and Adrian Belew tackle King Crimson classics as their much-anticipated Beat tour kicks off

The pair have joined forces with Tony Levin and Danny Carey to perform King Crimson’s 1980s albums across a sprawling 65-date tour

Steve Vai and Adrian Belew

Steve Vai and Adrian Belew have finally kicked off one of 2024’s most anticipated live acts with the opening night of the Beat tour.

The pair formed Beat – a supergroup whose name was coined by Robert Fripp – for a tour that will see them play King Crimson’s trilogy of 1980s albums: Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair .

They’ve been joined by King Crimson alumni Tony Levin on bass and Tool drummer Danny Carey for the shows. Vai says he has been working “feverishly” to be stage-ready over the past five months.

The 65-date tour began in San Jose last Thursday (September 12), with the band delivering a 19-song show across two sets.

“The first show of a tour can be like a gauntlet,” Vai reflected on social media afterward. “You can rehearse until you're blue in the face, but once you hit the stage the lights go out and there’s a live audience eager to be entertained, all bets are off as to what it’s like in rehearsal. But the band delivered well and we were all relieved to get through a good first show.

“I’ve been fronting my band for the last 35 years and I discovered a very comfortable place on the Beat stage with master of ceremonies, Brother Adrian Belew at the helm. It is so enjoyable to play this historical music for such a passionate fan base. I discovered the sincere devotion of the audience for this music and the whole band felt their firm support.”

Indeed, a big part of Vai’s prep for the shows focussed on finding that balance between playing like himself and playing like Robert Fripp, who he is essentially replacing.

Beat - Man With An Open Heart (King Crimson) September 12, 2024 in San Jose, CA - YouTube

Speaking to Guitar World , Adrian Belew, who spent just shy of two decades as the band’s co-guitarist alongside Fripp, had previously theorized about how the two guitar partnerships would compare.

“It really came to the point where Robert and I had separated into our own worlds,” he said. ”But I always said the perfect analogy was like two sides of the same coin. Because Robert has his approach, and I had my approach.

“I suspect Steve and I will end up being the same as Robert and me – a different version of it, of course, but two sides of the same coin.”

Footage from the opening night shows the band working through Man With An Open Heart , a song rich with chiming-yet-biting clean guitars, driven by Belew. But when it comes to the leads, there's a distinctly Vai-like flavor to the way they are delivered, complete with some subtle whammy bar wavers.

2024.09.12 // King Crimson BEAT // Heartbeat // San Jose Civic - YouTube

That trend continues on Heartbeat , with some overdriven volume swells and swish cleans coming from Vai's Ibanez signature guitar . It feels like a very natural marriage between the Fripp and Vai styles – something that will surely excite fans of both world-class players.

Of course, this is Steve Vai, who can make even the most finger-breaking shred look as simple as brushing your teeth. But in the five months leading up to the show, Vai wrestled with his abilities and his physical limitations in the wake of undergoing shoulder surgery.

A post shared by Steve Vai (@stevevaihimself) A photo posted by on

That surgery meant wielding his ridiculous Hydra guitar became a challenge. It also meant living up to Fripp's endurance and “the absolute relentlessness of what he does” made Vai's task all the more tricky.

“I am looking so forward to the roll out of this tour and being on stage with such seasoned and immensely talented bandmates,” Vai’s post concludes. “Not to mention they are all outstanding people that I enjoy being with. Thanks so sincerely to our San Jose audience for making this first show such an enjoyable experience.”
