England Men name Test squad for tour of Pakistan

  • share.label.shareOn Facebook

England Men's selection panel have named a 17-strong squad for the three-match Test tour of Pakistan in October.

Durham's Brydon Carse and Essex's Jordan Cox are the only uncapped players while spinners Rehan Ahmed and Jack Leach return to the Test set-up

England Men's Test Squad:

Ben Stokes (Durham) Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Gus Atkinson (Surrey) Shoaib Bashir (Somerset) Harry Brook (Yorkshire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Jordan Cox (Essex) Zak Crawley (Kent) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Josh Hull (Leicestershire) Jack Leach (Somerset) Ollie Pope (Surrey) Matthew Potts (Durham) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) Olly Stone (Nottinghamshire) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Eight players from the squad – Rehan Ahmed, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes – return to Pakistan following the 3-0 Test series victory in 2022.

Durham seamer Brydon Carse and Essex batter Jordan Cox are the only uncapped players included in the squad.

Somerset spinner Jack Leach makes his return to the Test set-up for the first time since the opening Test in India in January 2024.

Leicestershire leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who made his Test debut in Karachi during the last Pakistan tour in December 2022, will be aiming to add to his four Test caps.

Following his Test debut at Kia Oval this week, Leicestershire seamer Josh Hull is included in the squad for his first senior tour with England.

Kent opener Zak Crawley returns to the squad after missing out since the West Indies series in July. The 26-year-old, who fractured his right little finger at Edgbaston in July, is making significant progress in his recovery to earn selection.

Captain Ben Stokes is also included as he continues his recovery from a hamstring tear that kept him out of the recent Test series victory against Sri Lanka.

The venues for the three-match series are yet to be confirmed, with an announcement expected from the Pakistan Cricket Board later this week.

Schedule announced for England's first tour of Pakistan in 17 years

For the first time in 17 years, England are set to visit Pakistan to play a bumper seven-match T20I series in September-October 2022. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the fixture list for the series today (2 August).

The series begins on 20 September in Karachi, where the two sides will play the first four games before the action heads to Lahore for the last three T20Is.

Babar Azam closes in on rankings trilogy

The limited-overs series will be vital to both sides for their preparation ahead of this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in October-November. England and Pakistan are the second and third-ranked teams in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings currently and are also among the favourites for the marquee event later this year in Australia.

The T20I series will be the first leg of England's tour as they will return after the T20 World Cup for a Test series in December. The three-match could have massive World Test Championship implications, especially for Pakistan who are vying for a top two spot in the standings.

World Test Championship: How your team can reach the final

Zakir Khan, PCB Director International Cricket, said: "We are absolutely delighted to confirm hosting England for seven T20Is in Karachi and Lahore as a curtain-raiser to a busy, entertaining and exciting season of home internationals.

"England is one of the top-ranked T20I teams and them playing the shortest format in the lead up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Pakistan will not only help the team management to finalise their preparations, but will also set the tone for December’s three-Test series."

Ponting makes some big calls on T20 World Cup | ICC Review

1st T20I: 20 September, Karachi 2nd T20I: 22 September, Karachi 3rd T20I: 23 September, Karachi 4th T20I: 25 September, Karachi 5th T20I: 28 September, Lahore 6th T20I: 30 September, Lahore 7th T20I: 2 October, Lahore

Pakistan have a bumper home season lined up, which will start with England touring them for the T20I and Test series. New Zealand are then set to visit Pakistan twice – first for two-match WTC Test series and three ODIs in December 2022-January 2023 and then again in April 2023 for five ODIs and five T20Is. The three-match T20I series against West Indies will round off bilateral series engagements in the home season.

Pakistan are also set to host the ACC Asia Cup next year. The 50-over tournament will be the first multi-nation event in Pakistan since the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 1996.

England have named two uncapped players in their 17-strong squad for the three-Test tour of Pakistan in October.

The day after England finished their Test summer with a disappointing eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka, they announced their squad for their next venture, a tour of Pakistan.

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took charge of the Test squad in 2022 and transformed their fortunes, which included a stunning 3-0 victory in Pakistan, the first ‘Bazball’ tour overseas.

Stokes returns to the side as he continues his recovery from a hamstring tear that sidelined him for the visit of Sri Lanka, with Zak Crawley also coming back at the top of the order following a fractured finger.

Eight players from the squad two years ago will return to the subcontinent country, in a tour that has already been affected by uncertainty over venues, which have yet to be confirmed.

Ollie Pope’s aggressive moves leave England with regrets after ‘shooting themselves in the foot’

Brydon Carse has not been capped by England at Test level, but has played in ODIs and T20s. The South Africa-born fast bowler spent three months of the season on the sidelines for historical breaches of betting rules, only returning to play on August 28.

Josh Hull retains his place having made his debut at the Oval against South Africa, with England wanting to be in charge of the 6 foot 7 inch left-armer’s development.

While spinners Rehan Ahmed and Jack Leach return to join Shoaib Bashir in a strong seam attack.

England Men's Test Squad:

Ben Stokes (Durham) Captain

Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire)

Gus Atkinson (Surrey)

Shoaib Bashir (Somerset)

Harry Brook (Yorkshire)

Brydon Carse (Durham)

Jordan Cox (Essex)

Zak Crawley (Kent)

Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire)

Josh Hull (Leicestershire)

Jack Leach (Somerset)

Ollie Pope (Surrey)

Matthew Potts (Durham)

Joe Root (Yorkshire)

Jamie Smith (Surrey)

Olly Stone (Nottinghamshire)

Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Pakistan vs England: Tourists earn historic Test series victory with dramatic 26-run win in Multan

England beat Pakistan by 26 runs in the second Test in Multan to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series; Pakistan bowled out for 328 chasing 355 for victory, with Mark Wood (4-65) the pick of the bowlers

Pakistan vs England full highlights

England have secured a historic series victory in Pakistan after Mark Wood helped the tourists to a dramatic 26-run win in the second Test in Multan.

Pakistan appeared on course to chase down their imposing target of 355 when Saud Shakeel (94) and Mohammad Nawaz (45) moved the hosts to 290-5, only for Wood to swing momentum back England's way by prising out both set batters just before lunch.

Brief cameos from Agha Salman (20 not out) and debutant Abrar Ahmed (17) kept Pakistan edging towards their victory total, but England's pace attack successfully cleaned up the tail to dismiss the hosts for 328.

Wood was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4-65, while Ollie Robinson (2-23) claimed the final wicket and James Anderson (2-44) also impressed as England grabbed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

How England prevailed in Multan thriller

Resuming on 198-4 and requiring a further 157 runs for victory, Pakistan added just 12 to their overnight total before Faheem Ashraf (10) hit a turning Root delivery straight to Zak Crawley at slip.

The dismissal saw Root become just the third player in Test history to have registered over 10,000 runs and at least 50 wickets, following on from Jacques Kallis and Steve Waugh, although England struggled initially to build on their early breakthrough.

Shakeel started the day on 54 and continued to add to his run tally, while Nawaz quickly eased his way to 45, with the pair frustrating England by offering few opportunities in an 80-run sixth-wicket partnership.

England in Pakistan: Latest headlines

Nawaz looked destined for a maiden Test half-century until he gloved behind a short delivery and gifted Wood his second wicket, before the England paceman grabbed the key scalp of Shakeel on the stroke of lunch.

Pope makes a controversial dismissal of Shakeel in the second Test

Third umpire Joel Wilson concluded that Pope managed to get his gloves under the ball to take the catch, ending a gritty innings lasting 213 deliveries and leaving Pakistan seven down at the interval and still requiring another 64 runs.

Abrar came out firing after lunch and found four boundaries from his first 10 deliveries, including three from one Wood over, only to end his cameo when he picked out Ben Duckett in the covers to give Anderson his second of the innings.

Wood bowled Zahid Mahmood for a duck to leave England on the brink of victory, with Robinson wrapping up the win and sparking wild celebrations when he had Mohammad Ali caught behind without scoring.

'Special' victory for England

England's latest victory follows last week's 74-run triumph in Rawalpindi and secures only their third Test series success in Pakistan, and the win also marks the first time they've won multiple Tests in one series on Pakistan soil.

Ben Stokes

England captain Ben Stokes : "Things happened quite quickly this week compared to last week and it was another fantastic game to be a part of, going down to the wire yet again.

"Jimmy, Robbo, and Woody put in an amazing performance for England this week and hats off to the lads. We have achieved something really special this week as the England cricket team."

Mark Wood

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "We were not up to the mark in the first innings. We had a couple of soft dismissals. We did not finish well in the first innings and it cost us.

"After that we had a fightback in the bowling and in the second innings we fought well but unfortunately we have not finished well. We're definitely looking forward to the Karachi Test match and we will do our best."

Babar Azam

Pakistan to host ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophy on four-day tour

After arriving in Lahore, ICC Women's T20 World Cup trophy will be unveiled at Multan Stadium during Pak vs SA match.

tribune

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophy is set to arrive in Lahore tomorrow for a four-day tour across Pakistan.

Following its arrival, the trophy will be taken to Multan, where it will be unveiled at the Multan Stadium during the Pakistan vs. South Africa women's match.

On September 19, the trophy will move to Faisalabad, where it will remain for two days. It will be displayed during the Champions One Day Cup match at the Faisalabad Stadium. The following day, the trophy will visit various historical sites in the city.

The Women’s T20 World Cup trophy will depart for Dubai on September 21.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup kicks off on October 3, with matches hosted in Dubai and Sharjah. Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their opening match on the same day.

The Pakistan women’s cricket team, led by Fatima Sana, is all set to face Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa in a three-match Bank Alfalah T20I series starting Monday at the picturesque Multan Cricket Stadium.

This marks the first time the venue will host a T20I series, adding significance to the event. The second and third T20Is are scheduled for September 18 and 20, with the first two matches starting at 7:00pm PST, and the final game at 10:00am.

The series is a crucial warm-up for both teams ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE next month. South Africa, runners-up in the last edition, are touring Pakistan for the second time in two years. Last year, Pakistan dominated South Africa in a white-ball series in Karachi, securing a clean sweep in the T20Is.

Fans can attend the matches for free by bringing their original ID cards to the stadium. For those unable to attend, the matches will be broadcast live in HD on A Sports, with live streaming available on the PCB’s YouTube channel.

After the series concludes, South Africa will head to the UAE on September 21, followed by Pakistan on September 23. Pakistan has been placed in Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, alongside Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. South Africa, meanwhile, will compete in Group B, featuring England, Bangladesh, Scotland, and the West Indies.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana expressed her excitement ahead of the series, saying, "This series is a great opportunity for us to prepare for the World Cup. Playing against a strong team like South Africa will help us evaluate our performance under pressure."

The 18-member Pakistan squad includes key players such as Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig, Muneeba Ali, and Nida Dar. The support staff, headed by coach Muhammad Wasim, will aim to guide the team through this important series.

Pakistan squad for the T20I series:

  • Fatima Sana (captain), Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig, Gull Feroza, Iram Javed, Muneeba Ali (wicket-keeper), Najiha Alvi (wicket-keeper), Nashra Sundhu, Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, Rameen Shamim, Sadaf Shamas, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Syeda Aroob Shah, Tasmia Rubab, Tuba Hassan, Umm-e-Hani.
  • 1st T20I – September 16, 7:00 PM, Multan Cricket Stadium
  • 2nd T20I – September 18, 7:00 PM, Multan Cricket Stadium
  • 3rd T20I – September 20, 10:00 AM, Multan Cricket Stadium
