One travel has been my go to travel company for years. always reliable

Thank you for your kind words and for being a loyal customer. We appreciate your continued support and are glad to hear that you find our services reliable.

When trying to assist someone with a cheap ticket the agent can let the client know that this code like ultrabasic doesn't entittle you to a carry on.. how can you book a flight to go somewhere and can't take on a carryon it's wrong..I don't custom to this codes..215.00 for baggage no..no

Thank you for your feedback. We regret any inconvenience or frustration. Baggage allowance is set by the airlines. We make every effort to be sure our customers, such as this reviewer, are given this information at the time of purchase. When you book a reservation it can sometimes be easy to overlook some very important details that you are given.

they have been fantastic to deal with but just waiting on a cancellation to a dump of a hotel. didnt know it was a dump given the pics. they are arranging a refund from hotel but we will see. they should remove this facility from their hotel listings. lets see if they do

Date of experience : September 08, 2024

We understand your frustration with the hotel and appreciate your feedback. We strive to ensure all properties listed on our platform meet our standards. We're working with the hotel to resolve the cancellation and refund process as quickly as possible. We'll take your feedback into consideration as we review our listings.

Bait & Switch

Bait & Switch. Advertised a low rate on Kayak.com for flight from Osaka to Shanghai, about half the price as anything else. I clicked on the deal, entered all the information including passport number, email, phone number, and credit card information. Low rate was still showing and clicked book. Immediately get text message saying there was an issue in booking and to call their customer service number. In parallel, web site comes up showing alt flights at much higher prices. Same thing the next day, except the price increased from $287 to $1162 while I was filling in the information - I have a screen shot.

Thank you for your feedback. Airline fares are extremely volatile and can change at any time. We regret any inconvenience or frustration.

You guys are great

You guys are great. You’re my go to source for booking travel. The site is an easy to navigate way to view the options. And as a member all my info is available to plug in seamlessly. My only complaint is that I have to keep entering my saved credit card because the website keeps saying that it can’t be used anymore. So I enter it again but it would be easier not to have to every time.

Date of experience : September 04, 2024

We appreciate your kind words and are glad you find our site helpful for booking travel. We understand the frustration of having to re-enter your credit card information. We are always working to improve our website and user experience. We will take your feedback into consideration as we continue to develop our platform.

The process was ok but when funds are…

The process was ok but when funds are quoted for payment and the amount debited was different. This is a concern. It makes you feel as though transaction amount is deceiving.

Date of experience : September 13, 2024

Thank you for your feedback. This customer has been been contacted by our representatives regarding her concerns.

This company is a scam!!! Don't be tricked like I was

I was booking through affirm to pay for my flight. Somehow the transaction didn't go through and I got a call from one travel to help me with the booking. He assured me that I would be on the 3 month payment option. He lied. They took all of the money out at once and now I can't pay my other bills. I tried to solve the problem and was told pretty much, "too late. We already got your money!" Then tried to offer me a mere $25!!!

Thank you for your feedback. We have reached out to this customer to get additional information so we can investigate her concerns but have not gotten a response. Without the additional information we are unable to offer any assistance.

Flights came up quickly

Flights came up quickly. They are labeled "best" which was helpful. The flights were broken down with stops and locations dates easy to follow. Paying took seconds to confirmation. GREAT JOB!

Thank you for your kind review! We're thrilled to hear you had a positive experience booking with us. We look forward to welcoming you on your future travels.

When I first booked I was told…

When I first booked I was told everything was taken care of including my seat selection for all 4 flights. It seems now I have no seats. I called with my TSA pre check, but you won't handle that either.

Thank you for your review. Our representatives have spoken with the reviewer regarding the expressed concerns.

This app or website saved me almost $10k because i was booking for a family trip and total of 13 passengers on the airline website was running at $2k per ticket and when an adv for this app popped up it said only $1.3k per ticket i was skeptical at first but called both airlines and they are familiar with this app and its legitimate so i went ahead and booked them for almost half the cost with the same airlines but take off was one day earlier and it wasn't available on both airlines website anyway . Thanks Onetravel team

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the feedback! We're glad you're having a positive booking experience with our app. --All the best, OneTravel Team
I booked through what I thought was the airline. Ended up with Travel One/Cheap airfare. Conversation very difficult. Then once cancelled I received an email that said cancellation was not complete until a final step with “otp-onetime password” was made. Through the app, I chatted with someone who said they could see it was cancelled by my confirmation #. I questioned was the additional step with otp not needed as suggested by their email. They then asked what the # was so to update. I gave it to them and then was asked if I needed anything else? I feel if I had just taken their word and not questioned the need for the “otp”. They would have in fact not cancelled My rez and by the time I realized this would have been told a ridiculous cancellation fee. Long story short- felt very scam like! Always deal directly with airline/hotel
" Hi llgg1122, We are sorry to hear your frustration, and certainly want you to have the best possible experience booking with us. Please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected], our customer experience representatives will be happy to help you! "
So, I was able to book an out of the country ticket and even purchased a travel insurance on the ticket just in case I was unable to make my flight. When I reached out to One Travel they told me that not only was I unable to cancel the ticket without penalty but that they would be charging me to make changes!!! Oh, it get better…. After an hour on the phone with them and getting charged a fee they told me that they were unable to make changes and that I would have to call the airlines myself!!!🤬🤬🤬 oh and that’s not all…. When I reached the airline they booked me threw, in order to change the itinerary, it was literally for another full price ticket!!!😤😤😤 So much for having a good rate on a flight!!! First and last time I will be using One travel to book a flight!!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
We are sorry to hear that your experience was not satisfactory. Please, don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. Our travel experts will be happy to help you!

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was October. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

The best thing about visiting the USA can be summed up in one word: variety.

This expansive country contains an incredible number of travel experiences that would take a lifetime to complete, from wandering through the redwoods to breathing in deep gulps of sea air on glimmering beaches to immersing yourself in the underground art scenes of some of the world's most famous cities.

Whether you're a nature lover looking for wide open spaces and snow-covered peaks or a culture fiend who can't get enough of museums and galleries, the United States has something for you.

Overwhelmed? Here are 19 inspiring places to visit in the USA in 2024.

1. New York, New York

Best place for art and architecture

A city that looms large in American lore, New York continues to live up to its hype. A global center for art, fashion, finance, music and food, the Big Apple will never leave you feeling bored. Sip sunset cocktails on luxurious rooftops, mosh at local punk shows, marvel at world-class art in famous museums, or indulge in the best food you've ever had at a hole-in-the-wall favorite.

Planning tip: New York has so much to offer, but resist the urge to see it all on your first trip. Break things down by neighborhood or borough , or perhaps even by interest.

2. San Francisco, CA

Best for counter-culture

San Francisco contains multitudes, offering an urban travel experience with a distinctly West Coast flavor: take in breathtaking bay views at Golden Gate Park , wander the alleyways of the country's largest and oldest Chinese neighborhood , pay homage to LGBTIQ+ heroes in the Castro, or dive into cutting-edge art at SFMOMA and a plethora of local galleries.

Sure it’s touristy, but it’s iconic — and so much fun. That’s why no visit to San Francisco would be complete without a ride on a cable car and a stop at Fisherman’s Wharf . Take a boat tour for a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge . Then walk along the waterfront and join the crowds watching the hundreds of seals sunning themselves on the pier, watch the street performers and order fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants on the water.

Planning Tip : San Francisco can be chilly when the fog rolls in. Always take along a sweater even in the summer.

3. National Mall in Washington, DC

Best for national history

Washington DC's National Mall represents the center of American political life and distills its cultural history into a two-mile strip of iconic monuments and the country's most famous museums. The mall contains ten Smithsonian museums – the National Museum of Natural History , the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History, among others – plus landmarks including the National Gallery of Art, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol building.

4. New England

Best for forest drives and exploring charming centuries-old towns

Want to meander on mountain roads beneath brilliant forest canopies and savor tasty lobster and coastal views all in the same trip? New England is the place to be. Explore the quaint villages and cranberry bogs of Cape Cod , snuggle into a cabin in the mountains of Vermont , or dive into all the seafood you can eat in Portland, Maine . And if you visit in autumn, prepare yourself for some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the country.

5. Pacific Coast Highway

Best for West Coast exploration

The Pacific Coast Highway – technically three highways linked together – connects sunny San Diego with moody Seattle , delivering epic West Coast experiences along the 1600-mile journey. Stay at kitschy motels in coastal towns, admire the cliffs of Big Sur , marvel at the tidepools in Oregon , and explore Washington's Olympic National Park .

And be sure to visit San Simeon, a small oceanfront town famous for two things:

The Piedras Blancas Rookery , located on the Pacific Ocean in San Simeon, is the only easily accessible, free and open to the public elephant seal rookery in the world. The shores and rocks are crowded with seals lounging in the sun and barking.

Just up the road is the ultimate in mansions, the astounding Hearst Castle, the former home of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Take the tour and then visit the winery.

Planning tip : Sections of the Pacific Coast Highway run along sea cliffs prone to rockslides. Always check road conditions before setting off in case of any unexpected closures.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for foodies and art lovers

There's no place in the world like New Orleans  – we promise. A vibrant cocktail of Indigenous, Caribbean, African, French and Spanish influences, this city possesses a unique magic that keeps people coming back for more. Dive into its legendary Creole cuisine, revel in its lively festivals, and immerse yourself in a world-class music scene – this is the birthplace of jazz, after all.

Eat a beignet heaped with powdered sugar and drink a cup of chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde at the French Market on Decatur Street, overlooking Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral. Take a tour of some of the historic mansions tucked away on side streets in the French Quarter.

Avid readers will want to visit the home of Frances Parkinson Keyes , who wrote the bestselling Dinner at Antoine’s. Then, try to get a reservation at the eponymous restaurant. It’s not easy, but it's worth it.

Be sure to go beyond the French Quarter, too, and take a bayou boat tour, explore the antique stores on Magazine Street or golf in Audubon Park .

Planning tip: New Orleans's coastal location makes it susceptible to hurricanes from June through October, with the most active months being August and September.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for Indigenous history and culture

Nicknamed the "City Different," Santa Fe is rooted in American history while still keeping up with the times. A cultural melange of Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican influences, this city is home to numerous historical sites – like the 400-year-old Plaza – and a cutting-edge art culture that features a strong contingent of independent artists and the original Meow Wolf , a game-changing immersive art installation.

Local detour : Less than an hour's drive from Santa Fe, the Puyé Cliff Dwellings , carved into the rock face and atop the Santa Clara Canyon on Santa Clara Pueblo Reservation, were once home to 1500 Pueblo Indians. Abandoned in 1580, the one-hour tours are conducted by the descendants of the original dwellers.

8. Chicago, Illinois

Best metropolis for midwestern charm

Chicago contains all the hallmarks of a great American city – excellent food, multicultural neighborhoods , and top-tier museums – with a distinctly midwestern twist. Spend your days lounging next to the ocean-like Lake Michigan, catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field , or have an evening of laughs at Second City , the launchpad for greats like Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey.

Leave your car behind and explore Millennium Park, the lakefront and the museum campus by Segway . Board a boat for a narrated tour of the architectural wonders lining the Chicago River. From the boat docks, head north for a stroll along the Magnificent Mile , the stretch of Michigan Avenue lined with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and the historic Water Tower , one of the few survivors of the Chicago Fire.

Planning tip : Finding a parking spot in Chicago can be both exasperating and expensive. Download one of the free parking apps on your phone and you can usually find a spot close to where you’re going at a significantly lower rate.

9. Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Best for big peaks and winter sports

If you want to see the quintessential mountains of the American West, the Rockies in Colorado should be your first stop. Rocky Mountains National Park is a logical starting point, but in truth, there are so many different ways to access this dynamic mountain range – hit the slopes in ski hubs like Vail , Aspen and Telluride, drive the scenic byways of the San Juan range, or pitch camp in one of the state's numerous national forests.

Planning tip: Unless you're from somewhere with similar elevation, you might feel the effects of altitude throughout the Rockies; stay extremely hydrated, take your time on hikes, and skip the alcohol.

10. Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina and Virginia

Best for east coast mountains

While the Rockies tend to get a lot of press – for good reason – the USA's oldest mountain range is a must-see. The Blue Ridge Mountains make up the southern third of the Appalachian Mountain chain, and the lush forests wrapped around these rolling hills make for incredible blue-green vistas from the region's many ridges and balds. Dive into the numerous day hikes, road trips, and mountain biking excursions, cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway , or hike a section of the storied Appalachian Trail .

A scenic stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway , Asheville is a charming mountain town known for its thriving culinary and music scenes. The historic Downtown Art District, with its extensive Art Deco architecture, buzzes with open-air bars, restaurants serving regional cuisine and galleries filled with both local and regional artists.

Beyond its well-deserved reputation as “Beer City,” Asheville also has an extensive list of wineries and distilleries that offer tours. Outdoor attractions include mountain biking and hiking.

Just a few miles away, the renowned Biltmore Estate , known as America’s largest house, is a dynastic fantasy of gardens, architecture, art and opulence. Touring the 175,000-square-foot home is a step into the grandeur of the past and one of the many top things to do in Asheville .

11. The Everglades, Florida

Best for wildlife watchers

The importance of the Everglades can't be overstated – this sprawling wetland is an International Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a national park, thanks to the diverse profusion of flora and fauna that live here. Paddle through the coastal estuaries and camp among mangroves, or whiz through the numerous waterways via airboat. All the while, keep your eyes peeled for wading birds, manatees, and of course, alligators and crocodiles.

Planning tip: For the best experience, come prepared for the elements: sunscreen and bug spray are essentials.

12. Southwestern Utah

Best for geology lovers

If you want to visit one place in the US that sums up the grandiosity of its natural history, southwestern Utah is the place to go. Home to five of the country's most spectacular national parks, Red Rock Country puts the region's geological past on display with a dazzling amount of artistic flair. Hike the peaks and valleys of Zion and Bryce Canyon , or marvel at the crimson, ochre and amber palette in the cliffs and canyons of Capitol Reef and Canyonlands . And if you want a special treat, watch the sun rise over the sandstone masterpieces at Arches .

Planning tip: Large swaths of this region are extremely remote and sometimes lack cell service, both on the road and on the trail. Always share your plans with others and bring plenty of water in case of emergencies.

13. Key West, Florida

Best for sunshine and seafood

A unique destination, Key West is all that you’ve heard and much more.

Catch the Nightly Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square , a perpetual street party of food, street performers and artists selling their wares. Stroll through the historic homes districts with their large, immaculately maintained mansions and be sure to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum .

There’s no end of restaurants and bars to visit on Duval Street , but probably the most famous is Sloppy Joe’s , which opened in 1933. It’s a busy place featuring live music, good food and lots of photos of Hemingway, who used to sit at the bar in the afternoon.

Planning tip: Key West is a great walking city. To help navigate the island, download a map or stop by the city’s tourism office at 1300 White Street.

14. Charleston, South Carolina

Best for Southern charm

Live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, grand old mansions, cobblestone streets and charming neighborhoods make Charleston a must on any bucket list.

Start your day with breakfast at the Charleston City Market , which opened in 1807 and at which point Charleston was already 137 years old and a destination even then. Now, the city gets about 7 million visitors a year.

From carriage rides to sunset cruises, there are many ways to see the city . Take a bike tour, board a sailboat to see the city from Charleston Harbor, kayak or paddleboard through the bayous (keep an eye out for the dolphins), soar through the woods via zipline or drive the short distance to the string of beaches lining the shore.

Civil War buffs should visit Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park, and stroll The Battery , a 1.2-mile former defensive structure overlooking the harbor with views of Fort Sumter.

Faced with the difficult decision of where to dine – Charleston’s options are overwhelming – consider the views of the harbor at Fleet Landing , a former U.S. Navy disembarkation station, or head to Hyman’s Seafood , one of the city’s oldest restaurants, opened in 1890.

Planning tip : The best time to visit Charleston is fall, when the humidity drops, and during the winter holiday season, as Charlestonians love to decorate.

15. Sedona, Arizona

Best for mountain beauty

The astounding and awe-inspiring red rock formations are just one reason to visit Sedona , with its perfect blend of cowboy culture and urban sophistication. An all-season destination , Sedona’s higher elevations attract visitors from Phoenix and places further south in the spring and summer. Fall is a blaze of color and with dusting of snow–or even more on the red rocks turns Sedona into a winter wonderland.

To experience Sedona’s natural beauty up close, take a hike at the intriguingly named Dead Horse Ranch State Ranch . Rather drive? Explore the backcountry by Jeep, ATV or Hummer. Get a bird’s eye view of Sedona from a hot air balloon.

In town, take the trolley for an overview of the town. Then hop off for some serious shopping. Stores that celebrate Western culture include True West Hats where they sell Western and custom-made hats. Clear Creek Trading Company curates Native American merchandise such as beaded bags, bolo ties, Hopi wicker baskets, artifacts like handmade deer jaw tomahawks, craft supplies and sheepskin rugs.

That Western spirit continues with sips of prickly pear margaritas at the Cowboy Club Grille & Spirits , a mainstay since opening in 1946. Away from the vibrancy of the bustling downtown but just a short distance away, dine at L'Auberge de Sedona on the banks of Oak Creek. The award-winning resort’s menu reflects French and European roots matched with local cuisine.

Planning tip : It gets cold in the mountains even on summer nights. Pack accordingly.

16. Detroit, Michigan

Best for experiencing an evolving urban landscape

Forget what you hear about this once-beleaguered city. Detroit is back, attracting 16.5 million people in 2023 and generating $9.2 million in tourist dollars. Get to know the new Detroit while celebrating the best of the old.  Here are a few reasons why.

A culinary destination with many James Beard-recognized restaurants, bakeries and chefs add to a creative buzz that also includes the Detroit Institute of Arts with its massive Diego Rivera mural. Greenspaces abound for outdoor gatherings and recreational activities from the gardens and dog park at the five-acre Grand Circus Park in the city’s entertainment district to the 982-acre Belle Isle . One of the endpoints of Detroit’s award-winning Detroit International RiverWalk , visitors can explore its many cultural institutions like the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, the Belle Isle Aquarium, and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy.

The city’s culinary diversity reflects a wide range of ethnic cuisines and settings. The Whitney , a 19th-century mansion, is known for its gastronomy and ghosts (check out the Ghost Bar on the third floor) and gourmet food. Want less glorified but equally delicious fare? Take a seat at the Formica counter and order a chili dog at American Coney Island , family-owned since 1917. Board the Detroit Princess for a lunch or dinner river cruise.

Sports fans can take their pick from major league football, baseball, basketball, and hockey teams.

Planning tip : The Detroit People Mover is a great way to navigate the city and is currently piloting a fare-free policy for 2024.

17. Columbus, Ohio

Best for a big city with small-town charm

The fastest-growing city in the United States, Columbus is a powerhouse of arts, culture, museums, eclectic neighborhoods, and classic and cutting-edge restaurants.

Celebrate your inner German, no matter what your ethnicity or country of origin, in the German Village, with its cobblestone streets and immaculate 19th-century homes. Order the killer cream puff for dessert at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus & Restaurant , the oldest continuously operating business in the historic German Village. Not far away, the Book Loft of German Village features 28 rooms of books.

Hot Chicken Takeover, with six restaurants in Columbus, including in the wonderful North Market , is more than just a place for great Nashville-style hot chicken. It’s mission-driven to provide supportive jobs to men and women who need a fair chance at work despite their backgrounds and past problems.

Named one of the best beer cities in the US, many of the 30-plus breweries on the Columbus Ale Trail can be found in the city’s 27-acre Brewery District , sandwiched between the German Village and the Scioto River. The number of distilleries in Columbus has grown over the past few years. For tours and tastings follow the Columbus Distillery Trail , with its eight distilleries, for tours and tastings.

Take advantage of the city’s free cultural offerings. Admission to the Columbus Museum of Art , which has the world’s largest collection of works by famous local artists such as George Bellows and Elijah Pierce, is free on Sundays.  The stunning Beaux-Arts style main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library has a series of free author events as well as classes and programs. Be sure to stroll through the Topiary Garden on the street behind the library’s rear entrance. The only topiary garden in the world based upon a work of art, its meticulously hewn yew trees are shaped into a larger-than-life recreation of Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." The John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons , a six-acre park in the heart of the downtown, features free concerts, fitness classes, and other programs throughout the year. The annual Shakespeare in the Park is just one of the free performances put on by the Actors' Theatre of Columbus that take place in Schiller Park , the city’s second oldest park.

Planning ti p: Looking for a unique place to stay? Motels like South Wind , within easy walking distance of both the German Village and the Brewery District, once were found throughout the United States. Built in 1959, it’s among the few being reimagined with their classic looks maintained but with all the modern amenities guests expect from a boutique motel.

18. Louisville, Kentucky

Best for bourbon, food, and horses

If you’re looking for a road trip destination with lots of culinary options, bourbon, history and architecture, then head to Louisville .

Some suggestions for the best things to do in this river city?

Take a ride on the Ohio River aboard the Belle of Louisville , a National Historic Landmark and the only remaining authentic steamboat of its type.

Follow the Urban Bourbon Trail to such fab places as the Brown Hotel (where the famed Hot Brown sandwich originated) and the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience with its basement speakeasy. A tour of the Historic Old Louisville neighborhood is necessary for those who love 19th and early 20th-century architecture.

Enjoy cocktails and music at The Last Refuge , Bob Dylan’s new restaurant and event space set in a reimagined former church in Louisville’s trending NuLu neighborhood.

At Locust Grove Plantation, visitors learn about the histories of the enslaved people who toiled there. Meanwhile, the Muhammad Ali Center celebrates the boxing champ’s life and commitment to social justice.

Planning tip : The 21 C Museum Hotel in downtown Louisville features rotating art exhibits in its public rooms.

19. Indianapolis, Indiana

Best for a river city with a sophisticated vibe

Indianapolis is a city of surprises to those expecting a dull Midwestern destination. Visitors to the downtown can choose from a plethora of options. For museums, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest kids museum. The 152-acre Newfields features gardens, picnic grounds, Oldfields–the historic home of the Lilly family–and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Visit the 267-acre White River State Park , where you can explore the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum of Western Art and gondola rides on the water. Catch the Indy 500 or take a golf cart tour at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway .

Or, explore Indy’s neighborhoods , including Massachusetts Avenue, known as Mass Ave , a five block long historic neighborhood of restaurants and shops anchored by the historic Athenaeum , a three-story German-style building from the 1800s. It’s an amazing one stop shop with a beer garden, coffee shop, Rathskeller for beer and brats and lots of events.

Leave the laptop or tablet? Cancun Airport fines travelers bringing multiple devices

Portrait of Kathleen Wong

  • Cancun International Airport is the busiest airport in Mexico with over 13 million passengers annually.
  • Mexican customs regulations only allows one portable computer per foreign arrival, including laptops and tablets.
  • Travelers who bring more than one device face taxes of up to 19% of the deemed value of up to $4,000 of the device.

Florida-based Tammy Levent never imagined that bringing both her laptop and iPad through customs at Cancun International Airport for a work trip in June would result in an approximately $200 fine.

An entrepreneur in the travel industry and owner of Elite Travel Management Group, Levent is no stranger to Cancun. For the last decade, she's visited two to three times a year for work, often bringing neophyte travel agents with her for trainings.

When Levent arrived at the airport this time, she had two check-in suitcases and a carry-on with her. Passing through customs, she was flagged to one of the tables where her luggage was examined by an agent. The agent pulled out her iPad and laptop, telling her, "You can't have both," she recounted to USA TODAY. She said she's always brought these devices with her before, and this was the first time it was an issue.

As the gateway to Mexico's most visited city, Cancun International Airport is also the busiest airport in the country with over 13 million passengers annually and 500 daily flights.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

Unlike in the U.S., where there's no limit on how many laptops you can fly with, many of these passengers may not know that Mexican customs regulations only allows one portable computer per foreign arrival, including laptops and tablets. Otherwise, travelers face taxes of up to 19% of the deemed value of up to $4,000 of the device, according to the country's General Rules for Foreign Trade, under Baggage and Passenger Allowance .

Levent said her older generation iPad was considered worth much more than it really is by the agent, making her fine higher than she felt was fair. "This was wrong," she said about her experience.

"At the end of the day you want tourism but you’re driving people away," Levent said. "You have huge companies like pharmaceutical companies... (bringing bring groups in) and they’re coming with laptops and iPads."

Why are travelers being fined for multiple electronic devices at Cancun Airport?

The law isn't new. Travelers from abroad can bring "a portable computer equipment known as laptop, notebook, omnibook or similar," according to the Mexican Customs list . If passengers don't pay the 19% tax on extra portable computers, it will be confiscated.

"This has actually been in effect for a very, very long time," Michael Boguslavskiy, a travel agent for Caballeros Vacations who specializes in trips to Cancun, told USA TODAY. "It's massively outdated list at this point but it's still there." (For example, you can only bring in 10 DVDs, if people still travel with those.)

However, there's been recent uptick in customs actually implementing the law and charging tourists, according to the Riviera Maya News .

"It was never strongly enforced but now they are enforcing it worse than they ever have before," Boguslavskiy said.

Cancun Customs Administration did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Boguslavskiy said some possible reasons could be due to an increase in passengers carrying multiple devices with the possible intention to sell them. "Obviously, that’s not the case with 99% of people bringing a laptop and an iPad, but it's up to customs as they choose to view it," he said. Or it could just be to increase tax revenue from the influx of visitors.

It's also not the only way Mexican customs can feel like smoke and mirrors to travelers, according to Boguslavskiy. Only two cameras are allowed tax-free, and technically, cigarettes exceeding 10 packs can be fined or confiscated. Since there's a duty-free store right before customs, people stock up on cheap tobacco thinking "it's safe," only to have it seized shortly after purchasing, he said.

Upset with her Cancun Airport experience, Levent sent complaint letters to Mexican officials. In a return letter by the Cancun Customs Administration, Levent was told the luggage inspections are done at random.

Boguslavskiy sends the customs list to all his clients heading to Mexico and advises every traveler going abroad to "please be up to date with what the local rules of customs are."

This Scenic Fall Foliage Train Ride Is One of the Best Ways to Experience Autumn on the East Coast

The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad is about to start running their annual Fall Foliage Trains.

There is no place like New England in the fall . In addition to its sheer number of trees, many of them deciduous, the towns that make up New England truly embrace the fall season with cider donuts, U-Pick apple orchards , and maple syrup everything .

And while most people catch the fall colors from the comfort of their car , there is a better way. A way that allows you to explore beyond the heavily traveled highways so you can be fully immersed in the tree-laden landscape. Enter the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and its special “Fall Foliage Trains,” which run from mid-September to mid-October.

The four-hour foliage-focused train journey departs from the tiny town of Meredith, New Hampshire, and continues up and over Ashland Summit to the north. It crosses the scenic Ashland High Trestle, which affords travelers with views of the water and forest below, before passing through both a red deer farm and a Christmas tree farm.

The train continues to Plymouth, New Hampshire, where it stops at a local inn, The Common Man Inn & Spa , for lunch. This establishment welcomes train travelers with a hot buffet lunch served in its dining room. The fall-themed lunch typically includes a hot soup, roasted turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a side of cranberry sauce and butternut squash. There is also a vegetarian option. (Just note that the menu can vary.)

Following a hot, relaxing meal, train travelers can peruse the inn’s gift shop for New Hampshire-made products before hopping back on the train for the journey home.

En route to Meredith, where the journey ends, the train makes one more stop in Ashland, New Hampshire, which is home to the restored Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad Station . Here, travelers will be treated to a full tour of the historic station by members of the Ashland Historical Society, who are dressed in full 1860s attire

From Ashland, the train continues back over Ashland Summit and makes one final pass by Lake Waukewan before dropping travelers back at the Meredith Station.

The special fall foliage trip on the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad leaves Meredith Station at 11 a.m. and returns just after 3 p.m. The four-hour excursion only runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 20, 2024. Tickets for the fall foliage special are $99.99 a person and include the hot buffet lunch in Plymouth, the guided tour in Ashland, and a souvenir tour booklet.

Reservations should be made in advance at gsscenic.com .

Exploding pagers belonging to Hezbollah kill at least 8 and injure more than 2,700 in Lebanon

The militant group  Hezbollah said Tuesday that pagers belonging to its members had blown up across Lebanon , killing at least eight people and injuring more than 2,700, according to the country’s Health Ministry.

Iran-backed Hezbollah pinned the blame for the widespread and seemingly simultaneous blasts on Israel, without providing evidence. Israel did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the accusations and the explosions.

More than 200 people were in critical condition, the public health minister, Dr. Firas Abiad, told reporters. According to The Associated Press and Al Jazeera , officials updated the death toll after Abiad's news conference.

During the emergency, Lebanese officials ordered the public to avoid using handheld communication devices.

Mojtaba Amani, Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, was among the injured, according to the country’s embassy. In a post on X , it described his injuries as “superficial" and added that he was in a good condition.

Hezbollah said in its a statement that explosions killed "a girl and two brothers."

It added that the blasts came from pagers belonging to “employees in various Hezbollah units and institutions.”

One of those killed was Muhammad Mahdi, the son of Ali Ammar, a Hezbollah member of Parliament, according to the National News Agency, which is state-run.

Hezbollah says it has handed out pagers to members, many of whom stopped using cellphones out of fear that Israel could use them to track and monitor them.

“The ministry requests all citizens who own wireless communication devices to stay away from them until the truth of what is happening is revealed,” the Health Ministry said, according to NNA.

It was unclear whether the explosions were part of a coordinated attack, which would represent a significant security breach for Hezbollah.

Matt Miller, a State Department spokesperson, told reporters at a briefing that the U.S. hadn't been aware of the "incident" in advance and was "gathering information" about the detonations.

Lebanon's Red Cross said it deployed 130 ambulances to respond to explosion injuries, with 170 more vehicles on standby. The country's civil emergency authority urged people to donate blood at hospitals "as soon as possible," state news reported.

Reuters reported that dozens of Hezbollah members were seriously wounded in Lebanon’s south and in the southern suburbs of the capital, Beirut.

A Reuters journalist saw 10 Hezbollah members bleeding from wounds in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh, the agency said. It was unclear how many civilians were affected.

By late Tuesday afternoon local time, no one had taken responsibility for the explosions, some of which appeared to have been captured on closed-circuit TV video and shared on social media.

An ambulance vehicle drives on the street past buildings

In a second statement, Hezbollah said it had reviewed “all the facts” and information and held Israel responsible for the explosions, which occurred a day after Israel announced a new war objective , fueling fears of a new military offensive in Lebanon.

Lebanon’s foreign ministry condemned what it called an “Israeli cyber attack,” adding that it would submit a complaint about the detonations to the U.N. Security Council.

“This dangerous and deliberate Israeli escalation is accompanied by Israeli threats to expand the scope of the war towards Lebanon on a large scale, and the intransigence of Israeli positions calling for more bloodshed, destruction and devastation,” it said in a statement.

Former CIA Director John Brennan told NBC News that he believes the pagers had some kind of explosive in the hardware based in part on the scale and simultaneous nature of the attack. He speculated that the pagers were at some point intercepted and switched "for the ones that Hezbollah thought were going to be benign."

"All suspicion has to rest on Israel for being the responsible party," Brennan said.

He added that he believed Israel's intention was to send a message to Hezbollah of its capabilities to get to the militia inside Lebanon.

Israel has warned the U.S., its closest ally, that “military action” would most likely be the only way to address mounting hostilities with Hezbollah.

Late Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that his security Cabinet had updated its list of war objectives to include the safe return of residents who have been displaced from their homes near the northern border because of months of fighting with Hezbollah.

“Israel will continue to act to implement this objective,” the prime minister’s office said.

Thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border since Israel began an offensive in Gaza following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 terrorist attacks. Hezbollah has vowed to continue attacks until Israel’s assault on Gaza ends.

Israeli tensions with Hezbollah, a powerful militia and political party that formed in 1986 and rose to power after Israel invaded southern Lebanon in pursuit of Palestine Liberation Organization fighters, spiraled during the war in Gaza.

Last month, Israel struck Lebanon with what it said were pre-emptive strikes to prevent plans by Hezbollah to launch a widespread assault across the countries' shared border.

The attacks came weeks after Israel assassinated a top Hezbollah commander,  Fouad Shukur . Hezbollah sought revenge by launching a drone attack on Israel's Glilot base, which is near Tel Aviv.

International diplomats, particularly those from the U.S. and France, have been working for months to de-escalate the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in an effort to contain the war in Gaza.

I left my husband and 2 kids behind for a trip to Greece with my middle son. It gave us proper bonding time.

  • Wendy Altschuler has 3 teenage sons and will soon be coping with an empty nest.
  • She plans trips with one kid at a time to allow her to spend more quality time with each of them.
  • For the latest adventure, she went to Greece with her middle child.

Insider Today

I'm a mother of three teenage sons , and the adage "the days are long, but the years are short," has never felt more poignant.

Long gone are the mornings when my boys would wrap their arms around me and give me slobbery kisses, when warm squishy limbs would curl up with me on the couch for story time, when we'd watch the seasons change on our dawdling walks to school, or when cardboard box forts, matchbox car racing tracks, or Lego pieces would blanket every inch of our floor.

I ruminate on how little time remains for us under one roof as a family — especially as we've already reached the single digits for the number of summers we have left before my brood leaves the nest.

It seems like my social algorithms have latched onto this sentiment as well because I keep seeing stories that call attention to the notion that, on average, by the time kids reach 18, they've already spent about 90% of their time with their parents. The remaining 10% is spread out over the decades until their parents pass. I wasn't able to find the origin of this hypothesis, but it rings true for me.

Compared to childhood, where our kids spend the majority of their life at home with their families, once they grow up, move out, and start their own families and eventful lives, only vestiges of time remain for their parents.

My husband and I rarely catch up with our own parents

We see my husband's family about twice a month, as they live nearby. However, with my family, we only travel once every two or three years to see them, as we live several states away. When my kids were small, we took road trips from Chicago to Montana, a 1,400-mile drive that would take 21 hours.

Related stories

The point is: we did the best we could to visit my parents, with three small children in tow, yet as the years went by, and our lives got fuller (and more expensive), we saw them less and less.

Now, as a professional travel writer, one of the perks of the job is that I rack up miles and loyalty points , which I can cash in for trips around the globe. We travel often as a family , with all five of us, and these adventures have brought us an incredible amount of joy and connection.

When we're home, however, my teens scatter and do their own things. From work schedules to afterschool clubs, to hanging out with friends to way too much screen time, sometimes it feels like I scarcely see my dear ones. But, when we're away somewhere, anywhere, they're all mine.

A one-on-one vacation with my middle child

In June, I took my middle son to Greece on an adventure for just the two of us. While I do my best to carve out alone time with each of my children when we're home — my youngest son and I play chess, my middle goes running with me, and my oldest and I will walk the hounds — sometimes routines and obligations simply get in the way, and it's difficult to find meaningful time to connect without the distractions of other siblings and the hubbub of our household.

Pulling one puppy out of the feral pack and taking him on a big adventure allows us to bond while the other two pups strengthen their relationships at home and with their dad.  Traveling with one kid  at a time allows me to see him just as he is, to share and learn without any intrusions. I do this with each of my sons, but this time, it was my middle son's turn.

Our trip began in Rafina, a port city near Athens . We romped around on the pebbly beach, visited the Agios Nikolas Chapel, appreciated a lovely dinner, and then went on a weeklong walking journey through Paros, Naxos, and Santorini islands.

We adored hiking along the volcanic caldera in Santorini from Fira to Oia, a six-mile cliff trail full of volcanic soil, pumice, and lava. The views of the glittery Aegean Sea in contrast to the rugged rust-hued terrain, white-washed architecture, and blue-domed churches were a highlight for me.

My brown-haired, beryl-eyed son loved walking from our small, family-owned and operated lodging down to the Fira Port, being careful not to get squished by the dozens of hardworking mules following the same path.

We played "slap jack" cards and made little sketches of each other as we waited for our dinner. We wandered the snaking cobblestone paths in the tiny villages so my son could find the perfect yellow necklace for his girlfriend.

On our evening walks, we marveled at the sunset in silence. Every time our walking guide would utter, "never, never" when describing Greek customs, we giggled — now, it's something we say to each other as our own inside yarn.

These trips have taught me who my sons are

I'm grateful that I've built a career that allows me to travel with each of my sons. I've gotten to know them as unique individuals apart from their siblings.

What I've learned through the years of doing this with my boys, however, is that it's essential to view everyday occurrences not as chores or inconveniences, but as opportunities to click. Trips to the grocery store or jogs around the neighborhood with my middle can be just as meaningful and impactful as our lengthier romps abroad, and arguably more sustainable for our relationship as it grows.

While I loved mugging for photos in Greece with my clever and intrepid guy, carving out time while at home will continue to be a priority for me, even when he becomes autonomous and flies the coop .

New York Times Reporter Revisits Earlier Interview With Suspect at Trump Golf Course

Ryan Wesley Routh wanted to fly Afghan veterans to fight against Russia in Ukraine, an endeavor he seemed ill prepared to orchestrate.

A man with a gun in a wooded area by a road with lights in the background. The back of his jacket says FBI.

By Thomas Gibbons-Neff

  • Published Sept. 15, 2024 Updated Sept. 17, 2024, 8:41 a.m. ET

Last year I was working on an article about foreign fighters and volunteers in Ukraine . The piece focused on people who were not qualified to be allowed anywhere near the battlefield in a U.S.-led war and yet were fighting on the front against Russia, with access to weapons and military equipment.

Among the people I interviewed: Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old man whom the F.B.I. is investigating in what it is calling an assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump on Sunday.

I was put in touch with Mr. Routh through an old colleague and friend from Kabul, Najim Rahim. Through the strange nexus of combatants as one war ended and another began, he had learned of Mr. Routh from a source of his in Iran, a former Afghan special operations soldier who was trying to get out of Iran and fight in Ukraine.

Mr. Routh, who had spent some time in Ukraine trying to raise support for the war, was seeking recruits from among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban. And so the former Afghan soldier reckoned Mr. Routh could get him to the Ukrainian front. (Anything, even war, was better than the conditions in Iran for Afghans after the Taliban retook Kabul in August of 2021.)

There were a few complications. Mr. Routh, a former construction worker from Greensboro, N. C., said he never fought in Ukraine himself — he was too old and had no military experience.

But like many foreign volunteers who showed up at Ukraine’s border in the war’s early months, he was eager to cast aside his former life for something far more exciting and make a name for himself.

“In my opinion everyone should be there supporting the Ukrainians,” he told me, his voice urgent, exasperated and a little suspicious over the phone.

When I talked to Mr. Routh in March of last year, he had compiled a list of hundreds of Afghans spread between Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan whom he wanted to fly, somehow, to Ukraine. Mr. Routh told one Afghan he was helping: “I am just a civilian.”

My conversation with Mr. Routh was brief. He was in Washington, D.C., he said, and had planned for a two-hour meeting with some congressmen about Ukraine. (It’s unclear if that meeting ever happened.)

By the time I got off the phone with Mr. Routh some minutes later, it was clear he was in way over his head.

He talked of buying off corrupt officials, forging passports and doing whatever it took to get his Afghan cadre to Ukraine, but he had no real way to accomplish his goals. At one point he mentioned arranging a U.S. military transport flight from Iraq to Poland with Afghan refugees willing to fight.

I shook my head. It sounded ridiculous, but the tone in Mr. Routh’s voice said otherwise. He was going to back Ukraine’s war effort, no matter what.

Like many of the volunteers I interviewed, he fell off the map again. Until Sunday.

Najim Rahim contributed reporting.
