When you hear about Annecy , the first thing that comes to your mind is this postcard image: the lake’s translucent water reflecting the mountains surrounding it. It’s really the #1 tourist attraction in town.

For sure, Lake Annecy (Lac d’Annecy in French) is the first thing you will want to see when you arrive, so let’s start your trip in Annecy by a small walk on the lake’s shore. You will finally be able to see the crystal clear, lagoon like water and the beauty of the place by yourself!

You can for example start your stroll starting from Paquier , the huge lawn boarding the lake, and go on the right to the Jardins de l’Europe (Gardens of Europe).

With this itinerary, you will go through one of the top places in Annecy, the Pont des Amours (lover’s bridge), with, like the one in Paris, has “love locks” tied to it.

The jardins de l’Europe are very nice for the lake view of course, but also for the huge and magnificent multi centennial trees you can find there.

On the other side of Paquier (left side), you can go to the Imperial Palace gardens, for sure the most luxurious hotel in Annecy .

It’s located at the border of Annecy’s adjacent town, Annecy le Vieux, which, despite it’s name, is not and shouldn’t be confused with the old town of Annecy.

You can keep going on the lake shore to find a beach as well as the starting point for many nautical activities to do on the lake. I will tell you everything about them a bit later in the article.

Lake Annecy

A cool way to discover the place is to choose a Segway stroll, a nice activity to do on Lake Annecy shore . Even if you have never tried before, it’s a great place to start as the area around the lake is a pedestrian only area.

Trips are offered from 30 minutes (around 17€ per person) to 2 hours (around 55€ per person). It can be a great activity to do with your family!

I strongly recommend you to book your Segway tour in advance. It’s more convenient, as you can do it directly online by clicking here.

For those with an adventurous spirit and big thrills enthusiasts , I strongly recommand you to book a paragliding session above Lake Annecy .

The view is just crazy, no wonder why Annecy is the most famous paragliding site in Europe , and one of the best in the world!

Many companies are providing this service, starting from 95€ for 15/20 minutes . You can even chose if you want a big thrill acrobatic flight or something calmer.

The paragliding session usually starts from Forclaz pass (col de Forclaz in french) or the small town of Talloires and it should be booked in advance. Doing paragliding in Annecy is the best way to discover this sport!

For me, it’s a really a “must do” tourist attraction in Annecy.

The best paragliding session in Annecy can easily be booked online by clicking the button below.

As it’s the most popular activity to do in Annecy , you need to book it as soon as possible , else there are good chances that it will be fully booked.

Doing paragliding in Annecy

To discover Lake Annecy and its surroundings from another angle, you should go on the lake itself!

To do so, you have several options.

For example, you can rent a pedal boat (about 12€ per half hour) or a motor boat without license (starting from 30€ per half hour). Don’t forget to book it in advance, as Annecy is very touristy during summer.

If you want to discover Lake Anny by boat while eating a good lunch or diner , you can also take the restaurant boat “Libellule” from Annecy.

There are 2 departures per day , one at 12h and the other at 20h. The round trip takes around 2h30. For 65€, you will have the mini cruise and a 3 courses menu (starter, main course, dessert).

The Annecy boat company also offers commented cruises lasting from 1 to 2 hours. You can find more information on the official website (in French).

If you want to enjoy Lake Annecy on a boat far from the other tourists , you should opt for a private boat trip!

You will rent a boat with a skipper that will take care of showing you the best spots of the lake.

The great thing is that you can choose the type of boat you prefer and then simply relax and enjoy a perfect day!

As you can imagine, this type of VIP day on Lake Annecy is extremely popular, so you should rent your boat with skipper as soon as possible . It would be a shame to miss this day because all boats are already rented!

My favorite adrenaline pumping activities on the lake are for sure water-skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing.

Even if you’re a beginner, no problem, they will teach you the basics and make sure you enjoy your session!

To book, simply click on the button below:

And if you’re looking for something more relaxing, renting a stand up paddle is my favorite way to explore a part of Lake Annecy. It really feels great to paddle on this beautiful lake surrounded by mountains.

You need to click here to book your board.

Of course just go swim or get a tan in one of Lake Annecy beaches!

water skiing Annecy

In addition to the lake, the city of Annecy is also famous for it’s beautiful old town and the main canal going through it. That’s why the town is also known as the Venice of the Alps (la Venise des Alpes in french). It’s really one of the highlights of the city.

With it’s cobbled streets and arches, the Annecy old town is for sure a must-see!

It’s the place where you can take the famous picture with “l’écluse fleurie ” (the flower tidegate on the Thiou canal) or the palais de l’Isle (Isle palace), located between 2 canals.

Don’t hesitate to wander in the small alleys and to follow the canal along the Louis-Lachenal promenade .

With many areas in the shade, it’s a very nice small walk to do in summer when it’s very warm!

It’s also in Annecy old town that you can find most of the city’s restaurants (touristy, but some of them are very good), as well as all the small souvenirs shop where you can buy local things as well as the superb (a bit of irony maybe!) placemat with the picture of the lake.

You will also find some typical french shops with amazing Haute-Savoie cold cuts and cheese.

About awesome local food , if you are lucky enough to be in Annecy on tuesday, friday or sunday morning, you should definitely go to the old town market.

It takes place next to the canal, and don’t hesitate to bargain a bit on local products : Maybe you will get a free dry sausage if you buy a few!

Annecy old town

Taking a stroll in Annecy old town streets is nice, but doing so while eating the best ice cream in town is even better! Yep, there is an excellent ice cream shop in Annecy: Le glacier des Alpes .

It’s even considered to be one of the best in France. They offer more than 45 flavours, so the hardest part is to chose and stay reasonable!

Annecy is also the perfect place to eat a good tartiflette , croziflette (quite similar to tartiflette, but made with crozets, pasta from Savoie), cheese fondue , diots de Savoie (sausages) or, of course, fishes from the lake like perch, trout or arctic char.

You like wine and cheese?

In that case, you should really participate to this tasting workshop led by a sommelier and a Master Cheesemaker of France , no less!

During the workshop, you will taste 5 wines accompanied each time by a different cheese (Tomme, Beaufort and Reblochon among others!).

You need to book this activity in Annecy by clicking here.

glacier des alpes Annecy

Another thing to see in Annecy is the Castle museum. It’s located at the top of the small hill and you can easily walk there from the old town.

For adults, the entrance price is 5.5€. At this price, you will be able to visit the château d’Annecy as well as the temporary exhibitions. It takes around 1h to visit, but let’s be frank: the view from the castle is the main interest!

Annecy Castle

If you’re lucky enough to be in Annecy during summer, you will for sure want to take a dip in the beautiful crystal clear waters of the lake!

Here are the best beaches in Annecy and around the lake:

  • The beach of the Imperial , on the Avenue d’Albigny. Paid beach.
  • Marquisats beach , on the west bank of the lake. Free of charge.
  • Albigny beach , the largest beach on Lake Annecy. Free access, in Annecy-le-Vieux.

In addition to paragliding (which needs to be booked here! ), you can also do :

  • Hang gliding, to feel even more like flying like a bird! From 95€ for a discovery flight.
  • A glider flight , from 180€. The departure is from Albertville, 45 minutes from Annecy. Flying over the mountains in total silence is truly an unforgettable experience!
  • Canyoning: you can choose between several formulas and different canyons on O’Speed Canyoning website. They are open all year round and also offer Ice Canyoning sessions in winter!
  • A Via Ferrata trail , to explore the cliffs and mountains!

  • Tree climbing, a great activity to enjoy with your family during your stay in Annecy!

And if you wonder what to do in Annecy in winter , you can maybe try snowshoeing . These 4 to 7 hours hikes are a great way to discover the snowy landscapes around Annecy! You can enjoy snowshoeing from December to March.

You can find more information about this activity by clicking here.

As I was telling you earlier, Annecy’s nickname is “the Venice of the Alps”, because of the canals you can see in the old town.

But Annecy borrowed something else from the famous Italian city: it’s famous carnival!

Every year, generally at the beginning of march , hundreds of people dressed with magnificent costumes parade in the street. Several activities related to make-up or masks creations can be done in Annecy during the Venetian Carnival.

A very beautiful tourist attraction!

Venetian Carnival Annecy

The international Animated Film Festival takes place every year in June in Annecy .

Professionals of the industry from all other the world are showcasing their movies, ranging from 3D animated graphics to traditional animations and some very original creation (stop motion clay based animation, Chinese shadows theatre etc…).

A great thing about this festival is that every evening, a movie  projection is organised on the Paquier lawn , and everyone can enjoy it!

If you are lucky enough to be doing your trip to Annecy at this period, it’s really perfect for an evening with the kids (or without !)

Annecy International Animated Film Festival

Another must-see for locals and tourists is the Annecy Lake Festival . This amazing pyrotechnic show takes place every year on the first Saturday of August and is the biggest in Europe .

Fireworks are shot off from Lake Annecy and stands are built everywhere around Paquier so everyone can enjoy it. There are around 46 000 paid seats, but of course, you can view it from anywhere!

Anyway, a good advice et to hunt for a good viewing spot quite early , as the show attracts more than 100 000 spectators every year. You can imagine that the best spots are taken quite fast!

For more info and seat booking, you can have a look a Annecy official website (in french) .

Annecy lake Festival

After visiting Annecy, you will probably want to discover the surroundings. Here are the 5 best things to do around Annecy:

15. Going for a hike around Annecy

Considering Annecy is located at the heart of the French Alps , one of the top thing to do is to go for a hike in the mountains surrounding the city. Here are a few of my favorites:

it’s the easiest hike around Annecy . Take your car, and go to the top of the Semnoz, there is lots of parking places. From there, you will have amazing viewpoints on the lake and moutains surrounding it.

In summer , you will be able to do a few hikes as well as mountain bike in the high mountain pastures, and in winter , you can enjoy sledge, ski and snowshoe.

If you want to get some thrills, I strongly advice you to book your downhill mountain bike session at Semnoz, it’s amazing! (No previous experience needed!)

This hike starts from the town of Annecy le Vieux and Veyrier. You can walk for a few hours without major difficulties and you will be protected from the heat in summer as most of the paths are in the forest.

The great part of this hike is that you will benefit from an amazing view on all Lake Annecy.

It’s also possible to go directly next to the top of Mount Verrier with a car , by the “col des contrebandiers”. You will then have to do a short walk to go to the lake viewpoints.

For a short walk with a nice view on the lake , I suggest you to follow the signs to the “Talabar” , a small meadow with one the best views of Annecy.

This hike around Annecy is for experienced hikers , as the last part is quite hard, with chains, cables, ladders and quite slippery rocks. From there, you will have a great view on the lake as well as the Mont Blanc.

Properly speaking, this is not a hike, but rather a short walk in a nice natural site at about 10km from Annecy.

Result of the water erosion on rocks, the 25m deep gorges du Fier can be visited thanks to the footbridges installed all along the torrent. At the end of the walk, don’t miss the “sea of rocks”.

The site is closed from October to March and is then open everyday. The ticket price is 5.70€ for adults and the visit takes around 1 hour.

Hike Annecy

Around the lake of Annecy, you can also visit some charming villages, among which:

  • Annecy-le-Vieux: not to be confused with the “Vieil Annecy”, which is the old town! There, you will find the beach of Albigny and the restaurant “Le clos des sens”, 3 stars in the Michelin Guide.
  • Veyrier du lac, 5 km from Annecy, located at the foot of Mont Veyrier, a popular place for its hiking trails offering superb views over Lake Annecy
  • Menthon Saint Bernard , which houses a magnificent 12th century castle that you can visit. You can find more information here
  • Talloires, located in a small bay of lake Annecy, is a very photogenic village that inspired Paul Cézanne for his painting “The blue lake”.
  • Duingt , a village known for its 2 castles
  • Saint Jorioz, where you will find the only sandy beach of lake Annecy.

The first place you can visit near Annecy is Geneva. This famous swiss city is located only 30 minutes away from Annecy , close to the French border.

Like the city of Annecy, it’s situated on the shores of a large lake : Lake Geneva .

Here are the best places to visit in Geneva:

  • The old town , featuring a few must-see tourist attractions, such as St Peter’s Cathedral of Geneva.
  • The Jet d’eau, symbol of the city
  • The Parc de la Grange and the Parc des Eaux-vives, on the edge of the lake
  • A stroll next to the lake or a cruise on Lake Geneva .

If you want to visit Geneva, you should read my detailed article: The 23 best things to do in Geneva .

Jet d'Eau Geneva

You prefer to discover the mountains around Annecy ?

No problem!

Let’s head to Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc , only 1h10 away. It’s in my opinion one of the best places to visit around Annecy!

First, you should take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to discover an exceptional view over the entire Mont-Blanc massif.

Then opt for a ride on a rack train to reach the largest French glacier: the “Mer de Glace” . There, you can visit the famous Ice Cave and its collection of ice sculptures.

And if you want to discover amazing winter sports, you should try one of these 2 activities:

  • An introduction to winter mountaineering in Chamonix
  • Climbing an Icefall : A winter sport you should try at least once in your life!

No matter what you plan to do, you should end the day with a good Savoyard dish at a restaurant in Chamonix. Tartiflette, croziflette, fondue, local cheese… You will have lots of things to try!

aiguille du Midi

Still on the shores of Lake Geneva, you should visit:

  • Yvoire, a pretty medieval village listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. You will be able to discover its castle and small local craft shops.
  • Evian-les-Bains, a small but world famous town known for its mineral water . The walk in the centre and along the lake is very pleasant.

Yvoire

If you have only 1 day to visit Annecy , you will have to make concessions! To make the most out of your day in the Venice of the Alps, I recommend you the following things to do :

  • For a good start, take a stroll on Lake Annecy shore
  • Then go to Annecy old town to see the canals and Annecy castle museum
  • For the lunch, you can eat something in the old town (the famous local “tartiflette” if it’s not too hot!) and finish with one of the amazing ice cream from the Glacier des Alpes
  • In the afternoon, you should try to do one of the nautical activities available on Lake Annecy like wakeboard , water ski, paddle boat or stand up paddle!
  • To end your day in style, go for a paragliding session and enjoy the amazing view of Annecy from the sky!

In 2 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go for one of the nice hikes you can do in the mountains around the city!

In addition to the 1st day program, I suggest you to go to the Semnoz and maybe do this hike (in French) that offers a superb view on the lake.

For the most adventurous among you, the La Tournette hike is a great alternative to have a memorable day!

If you choose a short hike, you can finish the day at the beach , next to Annecy le Vieux and enjoy the lake’s crystal clear water.

And if you want to do something fun at Semnoz, the downhill mountain biking session is really awesome! You need to book it here.

Y si quieres hacer algo divertido en Semnoz, la sesión de ciclismo de montaña es realmente impresionante. Tienes que reservarlo aquí.

if you have 3 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go around the lake and maybe spend one night in of the the small towns like Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard.

Take the opportunity to do a few pictures of the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Depending on the day and season, you can even visit it (more info on their website )

Another very photogenic place is Duingt castle , on the other side of the lake.

And if you are visiting the region with friends, why not go for example do some tree climbing in an adventure park or paintball in the forest , near Annecy?

I f you would like to know more about special events in Annecy or just get a tourist map, you should go to the Annecy tourist information center.

My husband and I spent a few nights in Annecy at the beginning of September of 2019. Besides the fairytale-like charm of the town and the wonderful pastries, my favorite memory is the outside dance by the lake with a live band. Someone told me they do it every Sunday evening in the summer. I’m thinking of going a little later in September, and I’m wondering if the dance continues into September. Do you know? Thank you.

Vincent

Hello Bonnie,

I can’t tell you if this type of show will be offered in September. It’s a bit too far away. Perhaps you can send a message to the Annecy tourist office. They might be able to tell you about the events to come this year.

Have a nice trip to Annecy!

Promenade du Thiou

The Promenade du Thiou is a delightful pathway that winds along the banks of the Thiou River. It is a charming promenade that offers a picturesque stroll through the heart of the city, allowing visitors to take in the beauty of the town’s waterfront.

Palais de l’Isle

Palais de l’Isle, Palais de l’Île, or The Island Palace in English, is probably one of the most-photographed places in Annecy, and even all of France.

Palace was built on a small isle and splits the Le Thiou River into two canals. Palais de l’Isle is often described as a building in the shape of the bow of a ship. Its medieval construction and the oldest parts date to the 12th century. The palace first served as a prison, and later in the 14th century housed the Count of Geneva mint. In the 16th century, it was refitted to install rooms for the Courts of Justice.

Now it’s a small museum with exhibitions about Annecy’s heritage and architecture. Visitors can also visit prison cells, chapel, or old courtrooms. Entrance costs to Palais de l’Isle depend on the season – in the summer months it’s €4 for a normal ticket and €2 for a reduced one (March 2024). You can also buy a combined ticket with Château d’Annecy for €9 and save a buck. To check out current opening hours and prices visit musees.annecy.fr website.

Our video from Annecy

Our opinion about annecy.

For us, a visit to Annecy was a one-day trip from Thonon-Les-Bain s where we lived for a few weeks. We visited the town in early June and during that time there were already quite a lot of tourists and the town was quite busy. And what can we say… In a split second, we succumbed to Annecy’s charm and to this day we’re under its spell. Without a doubt, it’s one of our favorite places in France from which we have great memories. We’ll gladly come back one day.

The statue of St. Joseph, which dominates the district of Sous-Aléry, or the grotto of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, built because the area had been protected during bombings in 1943, are also interesting.

Old fortified house of the fifteenth century, the castle Alery formerly allowed to monitor the roads of Rumilly and Chambery. Very old, the original building served as a farm in the Gallo-Roman era before being fortified in the eleventh century. The majority of today's remains date from the 15th and 16th centuries. You can still admire a farmyard, quadrangular houses, or even a portal point.

Listed as a historic monument for its facades and roofs, the castle Promery is a former stronghold of the fourteenth century. Outside, one can discover a main building flanked by square towers, while inside several portraits of René Favre, Marie de Villaret or Vaugelas, are exposed. The Château de Monthoux, also an old fortified house, is also worth a visit.

Of Sardinian neo-classical style, the Saint-Maurice church was originally built in the 15th century in a Romanesque style. Partly destroyed in the mid-nineteenth century, it has seen its architectural appearance strongly modified. One can appreciate a beautiful statue of Saint Michael Archangel of the fifteenth century. The windows of the choir, which notably show Saint Maurice in warrior dress, are classified as Historical Monuments.

15 Top-Rated Things to Do in Annecy

Written by Lisa Alexander Updated Dec 23, 2023

Annecy has all the trappings of a fairy-tale scene, with white swans gliding through peaceful waterways and a backdrop of snowcapped mountains.

Adding to the enchantment, the Old Town (Vieille Ville) is a winding maze of mostly pedestrian, cobblestone streets lined with graceful buildings. Pastel-painted houses feature ornamental wrought-iron balconies and colorful geranium-bedecked windowsills. Potted flowers also adorn the town's canal footbridges and the elegant lakeside promenade.

Visitors will enjoy strolling through the town to discover its storybook charm. Often called the "Venice of the Alps" because of its picturesque waterways, Annecy is a gem of the historic Savoy region at the heart of the northern French Alps.

Annecy's most photographed monument, the 12th-century Palais de l'Île stands on an island in the Canal du Thiou. Tourists will find the best views and photo-ops of the Palais de l'Île on the Pont sur le Thiou (bridge). From this vantage point, the palace appears fortress-like with its sturdy quadrangular construction resembling the bow of a ship.

The Palais de l'Ile first served as a prison, but by the mid-14th century, the palace was instead used as a coin-minting workshop. In the 15th century, the palace became the residence of the Dukes of Savoy and in the 16th century was converted to the Palace of Justice (Law Courts).

Open to the public every day year-round, the Palais de l'Ile now houses a small museum that displays exhibits about the regional architecture. Visitors can also see some of the old prison cells. Guided tours are available.

Musée-Chateau d'Annecy

Perched on a hill above the town, the Musée-Château d'Annecy affords stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The castle was built in phases from the medieval to the Renaissance period. During the 13th and 14th century, the Counts of Geneva resided here.

Today, the château's museum covers a wide range of disciplines, including regional history, medieval sculpture, landscape painting, and contemporary art. There are also temporary exhibits throughout the year.

The Musée-Château d'Annecy is open every day year-round, except for holidays and Tuesdays. Guided tours are available.

Blooming flowers along Lac d'Annecy

The Lac d'Annecy beckons visitors with its unspoiled alpine beauty and myriad of recreational opportunities. This shimmering expanse of crystal-clear waters is considered the cleanest lake in Europe, plus the scenery is sublime. Snow-dusted mountain peaks provide an inspiring backdrop for walking, cycling , sunbathing, swimming , and boating .

The main beach of Annecy Lake is the Plage d'Albigny (Avenue du Petit Port), which has a spacious grassy area for sunbathing and a path for walking or cycling. Albigny Beach is immaculately manicured, with flowers and plants bordering the lawn. This beach has public restrooms and showers, as well as a picnic area . Lakeside staircases allow easy access for swimming. In July and August, lifeguards are on duty from 11am until 7pm.

Next to the Plage d'Albigny within the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Plage de l'Impérial (Avenue d'Albigny) attracts many visitors for relaxation and outdoor activities. The shoreline is a mixture of grass and fine sand. Well equipped with facilities, the Plage de l'Impérial includes a restaurant, picnic area, badminton courts, ping-pong tables, and beach volleyball courts .

Families with kids appreciate the Impérial Beach for its wading pool, playground, mini-golf course, and children's games. During the high season, lifeguards are on duty.

Rue Sainte-Claire in Annecy

Near the Palais de l'Île, the Rue Sainte-Claire is the place to go in Annecy for shopping and dining. One of the town's main streets, the lively Rue Sainte-Claire is brimming with old-world charm. Arcaded townhouses dating from the 16th to 18th century have retained their historic character. Some of the houses feature lovingly tended flower-bedecked windowsills.

The arcaded area of the street's townhouses is filled with upscale retail stores, trendy cafés, fancy ice-cream shops, and gourmet dining establishments. Tourists will enjoy browsing the boutiques, grabbing a gelato, taking a coffee break, or stopping for a meal at one of the quaint restaurants.

Eglise Saint-Maurice

Designated as a historical monument, the Eglise Saint-Maurice is the oldest church in Annecy. This 15th-century church was formerly a chapel for the Dominican convent. By the 19th century, the building became the town's parish church.

The church exterior reveals distinctive Flamboyant Savoyard architectural elements, while the interior expresses a more somber ambience. The impressively vast nave was designed in the typical style of Dominican churches to accommodate a large congregation.

Noteworthy works of art include the elaborately carved pulpit from the 18th century and a painting of the Virgin in Glory.

The church continues to host religious services and is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Place Saint-Maurice, Annecy

Cathedrale Saint-Pierre

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is reached from a narrow side street and is somewhat hidden from view, but it merits taking the time to discover. Built between 1535 and 1538, this church became the cathedral of the Bishops of Geneva, who sought refuge in Annecy during the Protestant Reformation.

The harmonious proportions of Italian Renaissance architecture distinguish the building's exterior, in particular the Tuscan pilasters. Gothic style predominates in the cathedral's interior, with the exception of the Neoclassical choir, which dates to the 18th century. An exquisite rose window and three other stained-glass windows illuminate the sanctuary.

Since 1822, the church has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Annecy.

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Annecy

Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge)

In an idyllic setting beneath a canopy of leafy trees, the fittingly named "Lovers' Bridge" spans the Canal du Vassé that flows from the Lac d'Annecy. This arched ironwork bridge seems to inspire romance with its majestic lakeside scenery.

The Pont des Amours is a popular spot for photo-ops, especially for engagement and wedding portraits. A short walk away from the bridge is the Jardins de l'Europe park.

Champs de Mars

This seven-hectare Champs de Mars borders the Lac d'Annecy and the Jardins de l'Europe, so the views are superb. The Champs de Mars is also known as "le Pâquier" ("pasturage" in the local dialect) because domestic animals once came to graze here.

Nowadays, this expansive green space is a favorite spot for locals to enjoy picnics and recreational activities on sunny days. Several paved cycling paths traverse the Champs de Mars.

Families with young kids will have fun at the Champs de Mars. Children love the park's mini horses and small train. Youngsters (and anyone young at heart) will relish the chance to glide around the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy. On the lake side of the park, visitors can find pedal boats and row boats available for rent by the hour.

During summertime, the Champs de Mars hosts cultural events such as the Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) on June 21st and the Fête du Lac (Festival of the Lake) held every year on the first Saturday of August. The Fête du Lac is Europe's largest fireworks show.

There are also fireworks shows presented for the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), along with an orchestra performance.

Jardins de l'Europe

The Jardins de l'Europe is another beautiful leafy park beside the lake. This luxuriant flower-filled green space is found next to the Pont des Amours and offers views of the Chateau d'Annecy . The Eglise Saint-Maurice is a short walk away from the gardens.

If visiting Annecy during the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), the Jardins de l'Europe is one of the best places to experience the festivities. This lovely park hosts some of the city's July 14th celebrations.

Basilique de la Visitation

Crowning a hilltop above the Old Town, this Neo-Romanesque basilica is worth visiting just for the views. To arrive here requires a steep and somewhat strenuous hike from the Old Town; the effort is rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the landscape surrounding Annecy.

The basilica's unembellished exterior contrasts with the ornate interior featuring blue Savoy marble columns in the nave, Venetian-enameled mosaics in the apse, and vibrant stained-glass windows that depict the story of Saint François de Sales.

The Basilique de la Visitation is open to the public every day year-round, free of charge. Guided tours are available.

Address: 20 Avenue de la Visitation, Annecy

Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse

Except for the 14th- to 15th-century bell tower, the Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse was built in the 19th century after the original monument at this site was destroyed during the French Revolution. The simple facade and domed interior with Corinthian columns are typical of Sardinian Neoclassical architecture.

This style of building design developed between 1830 and 1850 when the Savoy state was under the rule of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The church is open to the public for visits every day year-round, free of charge. Mass is celebrated here on Sundays.

Address: Place Notre-Dame 74000 Annecy

Eglise Saint-François de Sales

This 17th-century church contains the tombs of two important religious figures of the region: Saint Joan of Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales. With its Italianate facade and richly adorned Baroque interior, the church is a wonderful example of Counter-Reformation-era architecture.

The Eglise Saint-François de Sales is an active parish church that serves the local community. The church is also open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Avenue d'Albigny

Beginning near the Jardins de l'Europe and extending to the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Avenue d'Albigny is a scenic stretch of shoreline alongside the Lac d'Annecy. Tall, leafy plane trees shade the lakeside pedestrian path, which is a pleasant place for a leisurely ramble while admiring the picture-perfect lakeside scenery.

Every year on the second Saturday of October (from 9am until 6pm), the streets of Annecy become the scene of a folkloric festival. Celebrated since the Middle Ages, the Retour des Alpages ( Return from the Pastures ) marks the moment when the herds of alpine cows return from their summer pastures in the mountains to spend the autumn and winter season in the valley.

A parade of cows begins the convivial event, which continues with folk music performances, artisan craft demonstrations, and samplings of regional food products.

The parade begins at the Rue Sainte-Claire and winds through the Vieille Ville. Musical entertainment takes place at squares throughout the town.

Steps away from the Château d'Annecy, the Musée du Film d'Animation (18 Avenue de Tresum) presents interesting exhibits about animation cinema.

The collection helps visitors understand the animation creation process through thematic topics such as lighting and the illusion of movement. Exhibits also show images of animated cinema spanning the past century, providing perspective on the evolution of the art form.

The museum is open year-round every day, except Tuesdays and holidays. Admission is free of charge. Guided tours are available.

Address: 18 Avenue de Trésum, Annecy

Annecy Lake stretches for just under 15 kilometres on its longest side, making it perfect for hiking or biking around.

From the city, you can easily head out walking, and to enjoy the many Lake Annecy activities waiting to be experienced.

A cycle path runs around the entire circumference, making it easy to follow the lake from village to village, stopping off in small rural locations along the route and at the many spectacular viewpoints.

Paragliding Over Lake Annecy

If you are feeling adventurous and would like to see Lake Annecy from above, then you can even paraglide over the water.

Being part of the Alps region and being surrounded by mountains, there are many great launching points for paragliding, and many great local companies looking to take out everyone from beginners to experienced enthusiasts.

Pedal Boat Hire (and other water sports)

A great way to experience the real beauty and tranquillity of the lake is to head out onto the water. Around Lake Annecy, you will find plenty of operators hiring out pedal boats to visitors, allowing you to gently cruise across the calm lake at your leisure.

Of course, if you don’t fancy peddling across the lake, you can also join boat tours, or take part in many other water sports too.

Visit the Palais de l’Isle

The Palais de I’lsle is one of Annecy’s most important historical attractions. Located on an island in the Old Town’s Thiou Canal, cross over on the bridge to explore the palace that has served many different roles through history.

Today, the Palais de I’lsle is home to a museum, but in previous centuries it was the location of a castle, an imperial palace, then a prison and then a mint.

The views from the Palais de I’lsle are some of the best in Annecy, as you can see along the length of the canal, and across the Old Town.

Picnic in the Jardins de l’Europe

The Jardins de l’Europe – or the Gardens of Europe – is a lovely open space that’s found on the edge of the city, directly overlooking the lake.

As well as being incredibly picturesque, it’s also incredibly relaxing, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by greenery, flowers and trees with one of the best views of Lake Annecy ahead of you.

Bring a picnic, a good book, or some friends, and just enjoy the pleasant Gardens of Europe.

Basilique de la Visitation

Located on the outskirts of the city itself, the Basilique de la Visitation is an iconic church and basilica that offers visitors some of the best views over the city.

Found in the rising hills above the lake and the city, the basilica has a huge tower that can be climbed, for magnificent panoramics.

The church itself is not that historic, dating back only to the early 20th century, but its dramatic location has ensured that it is still a firm part of the tourist trail around and about Annecy.

Places to visit close to Annecy

Annecy makes the perfect base for exploring the surrounding region too, and once you have seen all the sights in the Old Town and visited the lake, there are plenty of great opportunities to day trip, even across the border to Switzerland in the north.

Chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard

Just a few miles away, a visit to Chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard makes for a great escape from Annecy, without having to travel too far either.

This medieval castle looks dramatically similar to the type of castle that you might just find in a fairytale or a Disney movie and is one of the most breathtaking chateaus in the region.

The castle has long guarded the mountain passes through the Alps, but today is home to a museum and historical exhibits.

Gorge du Fier

Gorge du Fier is a natural attraction that few other destinations close to Annecy can beat. The River Fier, crashing down through the Alps, has carved a spectacular gorge straight through the mountains over millions of years.

It’s not far from Annecy, found in the mountains that rise from the lake, and it makes for a great day out.

You can follow the winding, rustic pathways that have been built above the flowing, alpine water below, and that takes visitors along large sections of this dramatic canyon.

Col des Aravis

Being surrounded by mountain peaks, it would be a shame not to venture further out into the Alps when visiting Annecy. One of the most breathtaking places to visit is the Col des Aravis, a high mountain pass that’s an hour away by car.

The road trip could be the most scenic in the region, but it’s not for the faint-hearted, as you drive along winding mountain roads in the shadow of snow-capped peaks.

The Col des Aravis is somewhat infamous amongst cyclists too, and if you think you can handle the twisting turns and high ascent, then you could even try biking from Annecy.

Rising to a height of 1487 metres though, it’s not an easy climb, and is frequently featured in the Tour de France if the cycling event passes through the region.

The Col des Aravis is located in Savoy between Ugine and La Clusaz

Located less than an hour’s drive away to the north of Annecy, a day trip to Geneva is a must for anyone visiting the region.

Switzerland’s second largest city is the centre of the French-speaking region of the country and is found on the shores of Lake Geneva.

There’s a lot to do in Geneva, and one day there might not be enough to do everything complete justice, but you can certainly make a start.

Explore the modern streets, eat at the fine dining restaurants or enjoy some upmarket shopping. Take a boat across the lake, photograph the huge fountain and tackle the winding, cobbled streets of the old city.

Semnoz is one of the many mountain peaks that you can see from Annecy. Found to the south of the city, winding roads can take you to the pass over the summit, offering spectacular vistas over the lake and the other mountains on the way.

Like many of the mountains in the area, this is a favourite amongst hardened cyclists, who like to tackle the climb to the top.

La Tournette

Standing at just over 1500 metres in height, La Tournette is the highest mountain peak found around Lake Annecy.

You can’t drive all the way to the summit, but you can drive most of the way up, and technical climbers can ascend to the very top with the right gear.

The views over Lake Annecy, are unparalleled.

The Chateau de Montrottier

Chateau de Montrottier is another of the many fairy tale castles waiting to be discovered in the mountain passes surrounding Lake Annecy.

You can find this beautifully well preserved medieval chateau, with its dramatic turrets and walls, just a short drive away from Annecy.

Veyrier-du-Lac

Along the northeastern shore of Lake Annecy, is the small village of Veyrier du Lac. This little, lakeside community is close enough to Annecy for you to easily hike or bike out to, making for a great little escape from the city.

Just a half hour car ride or a few hours of lakeside hiking away from Annecy is the popular resort town of Talloires.

It’s one of Lake Annecy’s most picturesque towns, and you can find plenty of charming cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy, alongside lots of opportunities to take to the lake for some water sports.

On the other side of the lake, opposite Talloires, you can find the equally charming community of Duingt.

This is one of the most ancient settlements around the lake, and many prehistoric finds have been unearthed at Duingt.

The striking local castle juts out prominently over the water of the lake, while the vistas will certainly take your breath away.

The Best Things to Do in Annecy

Take a stroll around lake annecy.

Annecy’s main attraction is the lake that takes its name from the city itself – Lake Annecy. This glacial lake is one of the largest in France and boasts beautiful blue water and mountain views.

Annecy lies on the north side of the lake, and a stroll along the top is as peaceful as it is picturesque. As you walk along the spacious promenade, you can see the Pont Des Amours , Annecy’s love lock bridge, and the stunning Imperial Palace hotel . Dedicated paths stretch around the east and west sides of the lake, so you can extend your walk to the outskirts of Annecy and take in all the views.

Try Some Watersports

If not walking around Lake Annecy, why not get out on the water? In the summer months, water temperatures are very pleasant. The beaches and grassy banks will be lined with sunbathers, and the waters filled with swimmers, pedalos, water slides, boats, and more.

You’ll also find more adventurous water activities, like paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and scuba diving. Pop into the tourist information office for info on hiring a pedalo or boat, or check out this watersports guide to find watersports activities around Lake Annecy.

Discover Annecy’s Old Town

La Vieille Ville, or the Annecy old town, is a maze of canals, islands, bridges, hidden streets, and charming architecture. The medieval area offers an insight into Annecy’s history whilst soaking up the incredible surroundings.

One of the best things to do in Annecy is simply to get lost in the streets of the old town, but look out for these top spots:

  • Le Palais de l’Île
  • Château d’Annecy
  • Cathédrale Saint-Pierre
  • Porte Perrière, part of the old city walls of Annecy
  • Pont Rue de la République

See Le Palais de l’Île

Perhaps the most iconic spot in all of Annecy, Le Palais de l’Île is a former prison housed on an island in the middle of Annecy’s river and canal network. Now a museum of Annecy’s heritage, the island can be easily explored.

Although much of Annecy’s attractions are centered around outdoor activities, visiting Le Palais de l’Île and other popular museums are some of the best things to do in Annecy when it rains, and they’re not to be missed!

Visit Annecy Castle (Château d’Annecy)

Annecy’s medieval castle sits in the winding streets of the old town and has an interesting history as the home of several Counts of Geneva. Nowadays Annecy Castle houses a museum celebrating Annecy and Savoy culture, and much more! There are also incredible views over Annecy and the lake from the castle.

Marvel at the Basilique de la Visitation

Annecy is home to a few churches and religious buildings, but perhaps the most impressive is the Basilique de la Visitation. Just a short walk from the centre, the Catholic basilica sits dominantly over Annecy and boasts some impressive views over the lake too.

See some of the top places to visit around Annecy by taking a day trip to one of the other lakeside towns, such as Talloires. This small town lies on the east side of the lake and is easily reached by bus from Annecy. You could even hire a bike and take a leisurely cycle!

In Talloires, explore the town and see a different view of Lake Annecy from one of the many lakeside beaches or boardwalks. There are also some great spots for hiking or nature walks.

Fun fact: Popular band Kodaline shot the cover for their album ‘In a Perfect World’ in Talloires. Head to the Plage Municipale de Talloires to see the exact spot!

I’ve travelled to Anney many times (it is one my favourite places too) but never during the winter months, so it’s really nice to see how gorgeous it still looks. I’d also hugely recommend Talloires and the Cascade d’Angon – as well as the fairy pools a little higher up. If you’re here in summer the buses run more frequently to the villages and there are more places to find food – although the boulangeries in Talloires and Menthon St. Bernard are reliably good. If you’ve not been before, I’d really recommend heading up to Col de la Forclaz for a view over the lake – you can drive or take a shuttle bus in summer.

Best time to visit, how to get there, getting around.

Winding canals have made Venice one of Italy’s most famous tourism darlings. However, many other destinations across Europe also have scenic waterways. You’ve likely heard of Giethoorn, affectionately known as the “ Venice of the Netherlands .” But what about Annecy? This atmospheric mountain town settled at the tip of Lake Annecy in southeastern France lures travelers with its charming old town that’s crossed by canals and bridges — hence its nickname the “Venice of the Alps” — plus heritage-rich landmarks like Château d’Annecy and Palais de I'Île, churches, museums, cafés, cozy bistros, and Michelin-rated restaurants taking alpine cuisine to new heights. It’s also well regarded for stunning scenery — a sparkling lake with sandy beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks — and the nature-oriented outdoor recreation that goes along with all that. Visitors have the choice of staying at boutique hotels, quaint guest houses, and campsites.

Whether you’re planning to stick around Annecy for a while or just stop by as part of a longer trip around the French Alps and maybe even the South of France (it’s less than four hours from Provence), it won’t take long to fall in love with this picture-perfect alpine escape.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Rivage hôtel & spa annecy.

Rivage Hôtel & Spa Annecy occupies a prime position on the lake near several notable attractions. Besides being a convenient home base for exploring, it very much reads like a contemporary retreat with rooms that echo the natural beauty of the area, a pampering spa, and a sophisticated restaurant.

Set in the heart of the old town a 10-minute walk from the lake, Hébé Hotel is a great place to unwind in between sightseeing, shopping, and eating without leaving the city center. The colors used throughout the interiors cue calm vibes while the clean lines, wood floors, and sleek furnishings create a cosmopolitan profile.

Le Pélican

So much of Le Pélican centers around the water. With a privileged perch on the banks of Lake Annecy, why wouldn’t that be the case? The property supplies the perfect vantage point to admire the placid blueness from the terraces. When you do decide to venture inside, comfy rooms and suites are equipped for restful ZZZs.

Hotel Catalpa

Hotel Catalpa is a smart mid-range option that’s steps from the lake and public beach and a short walk from the old town. Inside the stone façade are 52 rooms replete with all the requisite comforts and a dash of French flair. There’s also a restaurant, bar, and terrace.

Best Things to Do

Lake annecy.

One of the largest and most pristine lakes in France, Lake Annecy is fed by pure mountain springs that trickle down from snow-capped peaks. It offers sandy beaches for sunbathing in the warmer months. Watersports are a huge draw for aquatic enthusiasts who have the option of paddleboarding, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and catamaran rentals.

Vieille Ville

Compact and exceedingly pedestrian-friendly, Vieille Ville exudes fairytale charm with cobbled streets, canals, and pastel houses ornamented by flower boxes. It’s the sort of place you don’t mind getting lost. In fact, wandering around — maybe stopping by one of the boulangeries or sitting down at a sidewalk café — is part of the laid-back allure of the old town.

Palais de I'Île

Built on a rocky island way back in the 12th century, Palais de I'Île has served many functions over the years:  a prison, a courthouse, a minting workshop, an administrative building, a gymnasium, and a school for stone carvers. Deservedly listed as a historic monument in 1900, the original medieval structure now plays host to a museum.

Château d’Annecy

Built on a hilltop above town, the storybook Château d’Annecy was home to the Counts of Geneva back in the 13th century. Today, it houses a museum with different sections that display local furniture, sculptures, and art as well as natural science exhibits.

Jardins de l'Europe

While the Gardens of Europe sit on the shore of Lake Annecy, this tree-lined park is a destination in its own right — not just somewhere to pass through in between other waterfront activities. Designed by Henri Porreaux in 1863, this lovely green space provides the ideal spot to relax, whether that’s with an afternoon picnic or a leisurely stroll.

Best Shopping

Annecy farmers market.

The Annecy Farmers Market operates every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday throughout the year. That means no matter what season you decide to visit, there will be an abundance of fresh produce and regional products like salami and cheese up for grabs.

Galeries Lafayette Annecy

The famous French department store Galeries Lafayette (perhaps you’re familiar with the flagship location on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris?) has an outpost in Annecy. It’s the place to go for contemporary and luxury designers, shoes, accessories, items for kids and men, beauty products, and home goods.

Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot

The first stop for many travelers keen to indulge their sweet tooth while on holiday in Annecy, Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot is a dessert shop known for its whimsical confectionery. With decadent cakes, scrumptious fruit tarts, and delicate macarons, it’s impossible to pick a favorite.

Chapellerie Pochat

The best souvenirs aren’t knick knacks but rather items that tell a story and have a distinctive sense of place. One of the oldest operating shops in Annecy, Chapellerie Pochat carries on century-old millinery traditions. The shelves are stocked with impeccably handcrafted hats you’ll wear forever.

Fromagerie Pierre Gay

The French know a thing or two about cheese, and Fromagerie Pierre Gay certainly confirms that fact. Established in 1935, this small shop is chock-full of the creamiest, most delectable reblochon, chevrotin, and aged goat tomme.

L'Esquisse

Awarded a coveted Michelin star for its innovative twists on homestyle French alpine cuisine, L'Esquisse draws foodies from near and far. Attention to detail in plating elevates the carefully selected seasonal ingredients and skilled cooking techniques. The entire experience feels upscale yet still soulful and unfussy.

Michelin-rated Cozna draws diners with its accolades that are backed up by the delicious, harvest-driven food and relaxed atmosphere. The menu changes with the season; recent standouts included smoked eel maki with cabbage and mussels, fennel, and buckwheat floating in a seaweed herb sauce.

Racines Annecy

Racines Annecy is an award-winning legacy operation with a modern mindset. Everything starts with the very best ingredients — from milk-fed veal to fresh-picked seasonal produce and herbs. Plates that look like art and, more importantly, taste divine are paired with natural wine.

Le Bistro du Rhone

Featuring deep red booths, colorful pop art, and mood-setting lighting, Le Bistro du Rhone oozes ambiance. The gastro food hits the mark, too. Diners especially praise the venison filet mignon with red wine-poached pear and slow-cooked Iberico pork as well as desserts like brown sugar crème brûlée.

Tête de Cochon

Further evidence that bigger doesn’t mean better, Tête de Cochon is a pint-sized eatery in the heart of Annecy that’s almost always packed thanks to its artful charcuterie boards, raclette tartine, and rich rillettes alongside crusty bread, plus interesting chalkboard-inspired decor and warm, friendly service.

Manfred Gottschalk/Getty Images

Many people think of the French Alps as a winter destination but Annecy proves it’s worth the journey any time of year. The colder season means access to skiable terrain and powder-dusted photo ops. When the temperature warms up, outdoor recreation in the form of lakeside strolls and boating takes center stage. The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June.

Annecy sits just 30 minutes from Chambéry Airport (CMF). Most travelers, however, opt to fly into Geneva Airport (GVA), located about 45 minutes away across the border in Switzerland, because it’s larger and welcomes more international arrivals. Alternatively, if you’re coming from somewhere nearby in France, it might be worth taking the train or bus since Annecy acts as a main hub for the Rhone-Alps region and the stations are conveniently located in the city center.

Annecy is quite walkable, especially the old town and lake shore, and easy to navigate on foot. The Voie Verte, one of the oldest greenways in France, attracts many cyclists. If you’re planning to explore neighboring villages, it’s a good idea to consult the bus and train schedules. It might be worth renting a car.

4. Explore the Canals

annecy crazy tourist

Annecy’s cobbled streets are complemented by a series of canals that weave their way through the town. Known as the ‘Venice of the Alps’, arched bridges and brightly colored flower boxes dress the waterways of Annecy. The main canal that runs through Annecy is fed by the Thiou River, which at just 5 km long is one of the shortest in France. Head to Promenade Louis-Lachenal before turning down any of the small alleys that wind their way through the Old Town.

5. Visit the Farmer’s Market

annecy crazy tourist

France is renowned for its Farmer’s Markets and Annecy’s is up to par with some of the best. Handicrafts and fresh flowers accompany cured meats, wheels of cheese, and perfectly ripe seasonal produce every week. Stallholders fill the streets of Annecy Old Town near Palais de L’Isle from 7am-1pm every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. Pick up some local fare for a picnic by the lake or grab all the ingredients you need for a market-to-table dinner in your apartment.

6. Take a Boat Tour on Lake Annecy

annecy crazy tourist

Touring Lake Annecy by boat is one of the best ways to spend a sunny day. The third-largest lake in France, its clear waters are created from snow melt from the nearby La Tournette and Le Semnoz mountains making it one of the cleanest lakes in Europe.

Take in the stunning views across the lake and of the surrounding snow capped mountains as you glide across the glittering water. There are plenty of options to choose from, whether you want to rent a pedal boat or motor boat, join a lake cruise, or consider jumping on a sailing lesson.

7. See Cathedral of Saint Pierre (Annecy Cathedral)

Cathedral of Saint Pierre (Annecy Cathedral)

Annecy may not have the gothic churches or spires that other French cities possess, but the Cathedral of Saint Pierre , otherwise known as Annecy Cathedral, shouldn’t be missed. The 16th-century church was built as a chapel for a Franciscan priory and later used as a temple of the Goddess Reason during the French Revolution. A great example of Renaissance architecture, it’s free to visit and open to the public.

8. See Palais de I’Île

Palais de I'Île

A feature of one of the most photographed corners of Annecy, Palais de l’Îlle , which is known as the ‘house in the shape of a ship’ has been a prison, a courthouse, the minting workshop of the Counts of Geneva, as well as an administrative center over time.

Set in the middle of the Thiou Canal flanked by colorful buildings on either side, this scene looks like it was plucked from a storybook. Dating back to the 12th century, Palais de l’Îlle now houses a museum that showcases the building’s many uses throughout history.

9. Spend the Day at Lake Annecy’s Beaches

Plage d’Albigny

Just because you aren’t on the coast, doesn’t mean you can’t find a beach. The shores of Lake Annecy offer a few great beach options to perch on. Pack a picnic lunch full of local produce and make the most of a day at the beach.

Closest to town you’ll find Plage d’Albigny , although its proximity to Annecy Old Town means it can fill fast. Plage Des Marquisats offers lovely grassy banks – a more comfortable option than pebbled shores, or head to Plage de l’Impérial if you want a more established swimming spot.

10. Take in the Scene from Pont des Amours

Pont des Amours

One of the most scenic places in Annecy, Pont de Amours (translated to ‘Lover’s Bridge’) is a spectacular spot. Love birds can put a local legend to the test, which suggests if two lovers kiss in the middle of the bridge that they will stay together for life. The bridge also connects visitors to the Jardins de l’Europe and Le Pâquier Park , where they can enjoy a sense of serenity.

11. Ride a Bike Around Lake Annecy

Ride a bike around Lake Annecy

Another way to make the most of Lake Annecy is by bike. Connected by a network of 132 km of cycle paths called the Tour du Lac d’Annecy , hire a bike in town and explore one of the many routes that trace the perimeter of the lake. One of the best options is to cycle the Lake Annecy Greenway, a 35 km route of an old railroad that previously connected Annecy with Albertville. It’s a great way to take in views of the lake and mountains as well as stop off to visit several small villages on the way.

12. Walk in Jardins de l’Europe

Jardins de l'Europe

If all the green space Annecy has to offer isn’t enough, be sure to pay Jardin de l’Europe a visit. Open all year round, it is one of the popular places to enjoy a stroll. These lovely gardens were used for various purposes since the Middle Ages, and it was a religious site up until the French Revolution. Perfect for families, grab some local produce from the market and enjoy a picnic with stunning mountain views.

13. Visit the Musée-Château d’Annecy

Château d’Annecy

If you’re looking to uncover more of the history of Annecy, then head to Musée-Château d’Annecy , a once palace-turned-museum. Musée-Château d’Annecy became the residence of the Counts of Geneva in the 13th and 14th centuries and was later listed as a historical monument in 1902. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, the blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture makes a visit to the castle an interesting architectural understanding through history.

14. Visit the Château de Montrottier

Château de Montrottier

For a fairytale experience, head 15 minutes from Annecy to Château de Montrottier . Step back in time as you explore the unique collections of curiosities which include items from every era and culture. Children will love the entertaining interactive tour in the gardens which lets you meet the estate’s former residents including a spy, an ambassador, or a noble lady.

15. See Gorges du Fier

Gorges du Fier

For more spectacular natural sights, visit Gorges du Fier which has been carved by the waters of one of the most important rivers in the region. Walk the footbridge that is suspended 25 meters above the river below to get up close to one of the best natural wonders of the French Alps. Just 10 minutes from Annecy, and a stone’s throw from Château de Montrottier, you can easily see both of these sights in a day.

An Insider’s Guide to the 10+ Best Things to do in Annecy

Last Updated on 17th May 2024 by Sophie Nadeau

This post may contain affiliate links. Please check out my  privacy policy  and  disclosure  for more information.

The Venice of the Alps is a beautiful and vibrant destination that will thrill sun seekers and winter sports lovers alike. Easy to visit and explore whatever the time of the year you choose to visit this eastern French destination, here’s your guide to the best things to do in Annecy , as well as some top travel tips to know before you go.

annecy

Where is Annecy?

What is annecy known for, getting to annecy, see the canals, cathedral of saint pierre, palais de l’île, musée-château d’annecy, pont des amours, go for a sail on lake annecy, beaches of lake annecy, frequent the market, rue sainte-claire, jardins de l’europe, where to stay in annecy.

Annecy is located in eastern France , in a French region known as Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This region was only formed in 2016 when the former regions of Auvergne and Rhône Alpes were combined following an administrative shakeup that saw smaller historic regions combined to create larger super regions.

Some of the closest towns and cities of note include Lyon and Geneva (in Switzerland). Annecy itself lies alongside the aquamarine Lake Annecy and acts as a gateway to the Savoie area, a speck of France well-known for its dormant volcanoes, hiking trails, and delicious cheeses (this is where Beaufort and Abondance both come from).

Annecy at night

Annecy is best associated with its eponymous nearby lake, Lake Annecy. Around almost every turn in the town itself, visitors will soon discover a beautiful medley of medieval buildings, pastel hued houses, stunning landscapes, and plenty of greenery.

Conservation efforts over the past five decades mean that Lake Annecy boasts some of the purest lake water in Europe, making it a popular getaway for young families. During fall, the changing of the leaves alongside the blue lake make this one of the best fall destinations in France .

The town has garnered itself the nickname ‘Venice of the Alps’ thanks to its abuncance of waterways which course between its streets and add nothing but charm and intrigue come day or night. Indeed, the Vieille Ville (old town) has more waterways than it had roads!

Lake Annecy

Annecy is well connected via a complex train network from the rest of France and so is served by direct trains from Paris, as well as a a few other French cities. The closest airport to Annecy is in Geneva and so it is most practical to fly to Geneva, Switzerland, before travelling to Annecy via train.

Best things to do in Annecy

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Annecy is simply to stroll around the town without a destination in mind and allow the picturesque settlement to reveal itself to you.

After all, Annecy does not have a lot of must-see attractions and instead functions as something of an open air museum, where the true sights to behold are the historic buildings and waterways.

Annecy aerial view

Allow yourself at least two to three hours during your time in Annecy to simply wander around the little streets. True nature lovers will also want to set aside some time to go on a hike close to Lake Annecy where nature is tangibly close and the scenes are picturesque no matter what time of year you visit.

Like many historic European towns, Annecy is best explored on foot (much of it is pedestrian only) and so comfortable walking shoes are an absolute must.

Cobbled lanes are fairly common and so you’ll want to ditch the high heels and opt for flats instead! For a greater insight into Annecy, consider booking a walking tour like this one .

old town annecy

While wandering around the town, you’ll soon be able to enjoy Annecy’s many waterways. The water in the canals of Annecy find their source from the waters of the River Thiou. At just 3.6 km in length, this is actually one of the shortest rivers in France!

annecy canal

Like most cities in France, Annecy boasts an impressive cathedral, and this one is dedicated to Saint Pierre (Saint Peter in English). Constructed in the 16th-century, this free to visit building (though donations are always welcome) is a fine example of Renaissance architecture.

Cathedral of Saint Pierre

If you look up any photo of Annecy, then no doubt you’ll soon come across snaps of Palais de L’Île. This mesmerising building looks like it’s been plucked straight out of a storybook and is actually a former castle and prison that has since been transformed into a history museum.

Perched in the very middle of the Thiou Canal and shaped like a ship, this structure dates all the way back to the 12th-century. By the 14th-century the turreted edifice was in use as a prison, though it has also been used as an administrative centre and even as a mint during its eight centuries of history.

Today, the museum operates as a history museum showcasing the building’s many uses over the years. As of 2023, entrance to the museum costs €3.90 for a full-priced ticket and the museum is open from Wednesdays through to Mondays (it’s closed on Tuesdays).

Palais de l'Ile

Yet another former Palace turned museum is the Château d’Annecy, which towers above the rest of the town. Constructed between the 12th and 16th-centuries, the resulting complex is a beautiful blend of medieval architecture meets romantic Renaissance elegance.

Visit today and you’ll be able to discover more about the history of the town and the lake. There is also a contemporary art museum, as well as changing exhibitions throughout the year.

The view from the château is also worth mentioning and provides an interesting and unique vantage point of the town, Lake, and surroundings (so be sure to bring your camera along!)

Annecy Castle

Undoubtedly one of the most picturesque spots in Annecy, the Pont des Amours is literally translated into English as ‘Lover’s Bridge’. Local legends suggest that if two lovers kiss in the middle of the bridge then they will stay together for life!

Regardless of whether this is true or not, it’s worth noting the bridge connects the European Gardens to the Pâquier park. It is a particularly special place to head to if you want gorgeous views as one side offers vistas of the town, whereas the others showcases views of the lake.

Pont des Amours

Even if you don’t feel like getting your feet wet by paddling or swimming, a great way to get another perspective of Lake Annecy is by going out for a sail. There are several options when it comes to cruising the lake.

Renting a pedal boat is one of the most fun ways to enjoy the water if you’re travelling with friends. For a little more money, you can rent a no permit boat or even take a sailing lesson. Another popular option is to join a boat tour like this one .

Annecy Lake in French Alps

There are several beaches scattered around the shoreline of Lake Annecy. The closest to the town is Plage d’Albigny which is situated a stone’s throw away from the casino.

Its proximity to Old Town Annecy means that it can become really crowded (particularly during the summer). On Bastille Day, this is a great spot to watch the fireworks from.

Another beach worth checking out is the Plage Des Marquisats, which boasts crystal clear water that’s perfect for a quick dip. This beach is best reached on foot from Annecy as there isn’t very much parking available close by.

Though many cite dining out as the crown jewel of a visit to France, I would actually say that it’s the access to fresh and local produce such as freshly picked vegetables, ripe cheese, and locally sourced fruits.

Nowhere is this quite as apparent as at the French Market. In Annecy, Market day happens three times a week; on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, from 7 AM to 1 PM. So whether you’re staying in self-catering accommodation or simply want to pick up some supplies for a picnic, be sure to check out the market during your stay in the city.

If you’re looking for a special souvenir to remind you of your time in Annecy, then Rue Sainte-Claire is the place to head to. This busy shopping street is crammed with boutiques and restaurants and is the perfect spot to mooch around if you’re looking for chocolates, books, or other small gifts.

Rue Sainte-Claire

As well as its great proximity to plenty of nature, Annecy also boasts a number of green spaces, and one of the most popular spots in the city is Jardins de l’Europe (the Gardens of Europe). This charming space boasts features such as statues, mountain views, and is a great spot for a picnic!

Thanks to its year ’round popularity, there is no shortage of places to stay in Annecy for almost every taste and budget. Just be sure to book your accommodation well in advance so as to secure the best rates (especially in the high season, i.e. summer). Here are some of the best places to stay in Annecy based on web-reviews and location:

Castles and canals: Things to do in Annecy, France

Posted on Last updated: March 31, 2020

The best things do in Annecy, France

Less than a year after deciding Strasbourg was my new favourite French spot, I’ve already lost my heart to Annecy. It must be something about the canals as both places are set around a network of waterways. But as well as a perfectly preserved old town with gorgeous historic buildings and cafés, Annecy also throws in a turquoise lake and stunning mountain scenery.

It’s not somewhere with a lot of famous sights, but rather somewhere perfect for a bit of aimless wandering, eating and drinking. The town’s compact size means you can easily spend a few hours exploring and then relax for the afternoon on the lakeside beach or in one of the waterside restaurants. So here are some of my favourite things to do in Annecy.

The best things to do in Annecy

Boats on Lake Annecy, France

Meander around Annecy’s canals

Annecy’s old town – the Vieille Ville – has more waterways than roads, surrounded by pretty, pastel-coloured buildings. The water comes from the River Thiou, which at only 3.5km long is one of Europe’s shortest rivers, connecting the River Fier to Lake Annecy. But what it lacks in length it makes up for in scenic surroundings. The river splits and rejoins around the old town, creating islands linked by arched bridges, draped in flowers during spring and summer.

A network of narrow streets and passages take you past turreted castles, quirky shops and a seemingly endless number of gelateria where you can get your ice cream fix. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants, most of which have tables lined up along the riverbank to soak up the sunshine. It’s somewhere to go wandering, get lost and see what you discover.

Canals in Annecy – things to do in Annecy, France

Pathways along the water’s edge in the old town

Climb up to the castle

Built on a hilltop, the Château d’Annecy towers over the town, so you’ll burn off that gelato on the climb up to the top. The castle was built as a residence for the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours from the 13th to 16th centuries, but it was later damaged by fire and abandoned in the 17th century. Later it was turned into a barracks before being bought by the town after the Second World War and restored back to its former glory.

Now it’s used as a museum with a couple of different sections – one with local furniture, sculptures and art, and the other with exhibits about the people and wildlife living around the lake (entry €5.50 for adults, €3 for under 25s and free for under 12s). Don’t miss the castle’s terrace for a fantastic panoramic view down into the old town and across the lake.

Set sail on Lake Annecy

France’s third largest lake, Lake Annecy is known as the blue lake, and you can definitely see why when the sun hits its clear water. It’s Europe’s cleanest lake (though I probably wouldn’t advise drinking it) with the water coming from snow melting in the Alps. There are walking and cycling paths along the edge of the lake, as well as sandy beaches in the summer.

One of the best ways to see the lake is to get out on the water. Between February and December, a one-hour boat trip takes you on a circuit around the lake, past pretty lakeside villages and an island castle, backed with snowy mountain peaks (€14.20 for adults and €9.60 for children aged 5–12). From spring to autumn there are also longer two-hour cruises and a shuttle between the lakeside villages, as well as lunch and dinner cruises onboard the MS Libellule.

Fill up at the market

There’s something special about French markets, with their huge piles of colourful vegetables and pungent smelling cheeses. And Annecy’s market has one of the best locations, stretching along the bridges and narrow streets of the old town. Markets are held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 7am–1pm, selling fresh local produce from fish to flowers.

You can check out the local specialities, and if you want to buy the stallholders will often let you have a taste first. Well worth trying are the tasty salami-style sausages which are made with flavours like mushroom, goats’ cheese and hazelnut. And the creamy reblochon cheese, which is used in mountain dishes like tartiflette . If you’re in town on the last Saturday of the month, there’s also a big arts, crafts and flea market which runs from around 8am–5pm.

Get sent to prison

Right at the heart of Annecy’s old city is the Palais de l’Île – the town’s most famous and photographed building. It was built back in the 12th century on a triangular island that lies between two forks of the river. It looks like a miniature fairytale castle but it has actually been used as a mint, a courthouse and a prison over the years.

Today the Palais is home to a small museum with exhibits about local history and architecture, but it’s best appreciated from the outside. Take a walk through the old town at night too when you can see it all lit up. Lights in the canals shine upwards and the turrets at the front of the Palais are lit from inside so the whole place glows in the dark.

Head into the Aravis mountains

There are enough things to do in Annecy to keep you busy for a weekend. But if you’ve got more time then the town is surrounded by some spectacular mountain scenery that’s easy to access. The Aravis mountain range is around 40 minutes’ drive away and is home to four ski resorts – La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Manigod and Saint Jean de Sixt. Buses connect Annecy with the main ski resorts or you can hire a car for the day and go exploring.

Visit the pretty Savoyard village of La Clusaz or head on up the zig-zagging road to the Col des Aravis mountain pass for stunning views across to Mont Blanc. In winter you can go snowshoeing or take a husky ride, or in summer it’s popular with cyclists, but you need to be fit – the pass has route of the Tour de France several times. There are also a couple of restaurants serving mountain specialities and a tiny chapel dedicated to St Anne, protector of travellers.

15 Best Day Trips from Geneva

Geneva is Switzerland’s second most populous city, famed for being a diplomatic centre.

But with so many more facets to its appeal – from cuisine and architecture to breath-taking nature – Switzerland is a country of almost unparalleled beauty.

Steep, jagged mountains rise from the ground, dusted in snow in winter, carpeted with green in the summer.

Sprawling, successful cities blend the clean lines of skyscrapers with the intricate architecture of the old world.

Then, of course, there’s the food – notably, some of the best chocolate in the world is sourced in Switzerland.

Geneva is certainly not going to disappoint holidaymakers, whether you stick to the city or venture further afield to explore some more of Switzerland’s highlights.

Here are some great recommendations for the best day trips to be had from Geneva.

Annecy, France

Often called the Venice of the Alps, old-town Annecy is a picture-perfect place to explore for the day.

Located just 45-minutes from Geneva, it sits prettily on the River Thiou and has been awarded the Art and History designation by France, cementing its status as a site of cultural importance.

There are plenty of nooks and crannies to seek out, with flea markets and hole in the wall cafes sharing space with historic landmarks.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the surrounding scenery is stunning, with mountains rearing up all around.

Recommended tour : Annecy Half-Day Trip from Geneva

2. Chamonix

Chamonix, France in Summer

The Alpine resort of Chamonix has long been a favourite spot among tourists, with its chocolate-box looks and easy access to the mountains.

In 1924, the village hosted the first Winter Olympics and its popularity has been ensured ever since.

The nearby valley offers options for both snow sports and mountaineering, while the village itself has plenty to entertain visitors, from excellent shopping to boutique restaurants.

You can hop on a cable car up to the mountains, or simply take in the views while sipping a coffee from a café, as Mount Blanc can be seen right from the village.

Best seller : Chamonix, Mont-Blanc Day Tour from Geneva

3. Lausanne

Lausanne

Moving away from the mountains, along the river sits Lausanne; a city with the fortuitous position of being located on a beautiful lake with a stunning alpine backdrop.

The spires of the cathedral tower over the cityscape, nestled among the pretty red rooves of its neighbouring buildings.

Visitors can spend many a happy hour wandering the streets; there are plenty of busy restaurants lining the city centre, perfect for a quick stop before you head back to Geneva by boat.

Cruising back along the fresh water of the Leman Lake, you’ll find yourself wishing you didn’t have to leave.

Available tour : Swiss Riviera Tour – Lausanne, Montreux & Chateau Chillon

Yvoire Castle

The fortified village of Yvoire provides a fascinating time capsule of medieval France.

The castle was built in 1036 but still stands strong today, while the village itself has remained hardly changed for over 700 years.

Yvoire is considered one of France’s most beautiful villages – and that’s saying something – so make sure you spend some time soaking in the atmosphere of the place.

The local speciality dish, filet de perche, is served in many of the village’s top restaurants.

If you choose the right spot, you’ll get a lake view as you dine.

Suggested tour : Yvoire & Evian Private Day Trip from Geneva

5. Swiss Riviera: Vevey, Montreaux and Chillon

Chillon Castle, Switzerland

Packed into this day trip are several cute Swiss villages, each with its own unique charm.

Start out with a drive through the spectacular Vaud countryside, and kick off the trip with a look round Corsier-sur-Vevey.

Then move along to Chillon – where the castle is the most impressive sight – by way of the beautiful lake road from Vevey, lined with palm trees and tropical flowers.

After taking plenty of pictures, head on to the glitz and glamour of Montreux, where you can practically feel the presence of all the stars who have visited in the past, from Ray Charles to Aretha Franklin.

Riviera tour : Geneva: Riviera Montreux, Lavaux UNESCO & Optional Cruise

6. Lavey les Bains

Lavey les Bains

For a truly relaxing day trip option, consider a visit to Les Bains de Lavey, a luxurious spa located near Lake Geneva.

Ease your mind and your muscles as you luxuriate in the hottest water in Switzerland – a thermal spring whose temperature reaches 62 degrees.

The spa has plenty of wellness options besides swimming, including massages and beauty treatments.

You can hardly help but leave feeling calmed and ready to take on the rest of your trip.

Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

The vineyard region of Lavaux is a UNESCO world heritage site, recognised in 2007, and is famed around the world for its wines.

Located in the canton of Vaud in Western Switzerland, it is situated at 500-metres altitude.

Lavaux is an area of stunning natural beauty, so make sure you allow enough time to meander through the vineyards with their spectacular views of the lake and the Alps.

Be prepared to sample some excellent wines accompanied by local produce as a last-minute treat on your trip; Lavaux wines are well known for being an excellent companion to raclette and fondue.

8. Valmorel

Valmorel

This ski resort is world-renowned, and a hugely popular day trip to take from Geneva, due to its easy accessibility.

It’s perfect for some easy day skiing, and even for beginners there’s plenty of options on offer, with wide sweeping runs cascading down the mountain.

If you don’t fancy skiing, there are other snow sport options, including snow skating, tobogganing and air boarding.

The après is pretty good too, with multiple bars on offer, and the town itself has some excellent restaurants to hang out in.

9. Interlaken

Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken is a photographer’s dream, with the vivid greens of the hills delicately contrasting with the cerulean blues of the lake, leaving no need for post-production on pictures.

It’s hard to believe this place is real and hasn’t simply sprung into existence from a postcard.

Interlaken is also a great jumping off point for further excursions, such as riding the cable cars around the mountains and visiting the place where the Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was filmed.

There’s also the nearby lake, which you can take a boat trip around.

10. Gruyeres

Gruyeres, Switzerland

Cheese fans rejoice; Gruyeres is everything you have dreamed of.

Foodies will love this fun day trip, involving plenty of cheese and chocolate, two of the things that the Swiss do best.

You will learn about the history and process of making these foods, with tours of the food making facilities led by experts on the subject.

And don’t worry, there’s plenty of opportunities to taste test throughout the day.

The village itself is also, unsurprisingly, very picturesque, and a pleasant place to wander around as you let your food digest.

Available tour : Gruyeres Basic Tour to Medieval Village

11. Europa theme park

Europa Park Geneva

If you’re a bit bored of spectacular scenery, exquisite food and cultural history, then this is the day trip for you.

Europa Park is Geneva’s best theme park, complete with loop-the-looping roller coasters, hours of fun shows, wild-water rapids and plenty more.

The theme is, as the name suggests, the continent of Europe, and there are fifteen different areas reflecting varying countries and cultures.

This is a superb place to take the kids for the day, so consider it as an option when planning your holiday.

Transfer & Tickets : Europa Park Theme Park

12. Glacier 3000

Glacier 3000

Where better to take in views of Alpine peaks than from a glacier at 3000-metres? On this day trip from Geneva, you’ll drive along the lake before passing the Col du Pillon and boarding a cable car for your steep ascent.

Once you’re at the top, you can choose a leisurely walk across the frozen land, or opt for the excitement of a husky dog sled-ride if you’re visiting in summer.

Either way, the views are spectacular.

You can also choose to have your lunch on high at a restaurant designed by architect Mario Botta.

Suggested tour : Gold Tour at the Glacier 3000 and Montreux

Evian, Switzerland

You’ve heard of the bottled water brand, but here you have the chance to visit the place from which it takes its name: the charming lakeside village of Evian.

The crystal-clear waters of the lake and nearby springs help you understand why it rose to fame for this very reason.

Take a walk along the water for a tranquil afternoon, with the views across the lake providing a picturesque setting for a picnic.

Bern, Switerzerland

Switzerland’s capital certainly deserves a mention on this list, and of course, the place is pristinely clean and full of sharp, well-engineered buildings alongside historic architecture.

Since 1983, the city has been recognised by UNESCO for its picturesque properties.

Ascend the Bern Cathedral for the best views from the highest point in the city, stretching out to the shores of Aare River.

Visit the Clock Tower in the city centre – one of the oldest in Switzerland – and stop off along the way for a quick coffee in one of many excellent cafes.

Culture is easy to find too, in the Einstein Museum or the Museum of Art, among many other top spots.

15. Veysonnaz

Veysonnaz

Yet another pretty ski village can be found in Veysonnaz, located slap bang in the middle of the Four Valleys, and a great place to visit for the day tripper.

That’s just the winter, though – hiking is plentiful in the summer months and the views of the valley are splendid, with verdant grass and wildflowers carpeting the slopes of the Rhone valley.

Veysonnaz is an authentic pocket of Alpine culture with the advantage of a modern infrastructure, making it easy and pleasant for visitors to get an insight into its charms.

An excellent day trip option.

The list of beautiful things to see in Annecy Old Town includes:

  • Palais de l’Isle , the symbol of Annecy, built on a little isle in the Thiou River
  • Porte Perrière , one of the few remains of the medieval ramparts in Annecy
  • Place Sainte-Claire , one of the most beautiful squares in Annecy.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Pierre , built in the 16th century
  • Rue Royale . This commercial street is quite large compared to the surrounding streets and is lined with beautiful buildings and stores.

Visit the Château d’Annecy

annecy crazy tourist

^Inside the courtyard

This medieval fortress overlooking Annecy dates back to the 14th century, and it was home to the Counts of Geneva and later the Duques of Savoye. Today, it hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to the regional heritage, archaeology, and beaux-arts.

The ticket to the château costs 5.50€. For 7,20€, however, there’s a combo ticket to visit the three museums in the city (Château d’Annecy, Palais de l’Île, Musée du Film d’Animation), which is valid for two days. You can buy these tickets on-site in any of these three museums.

Explore the Canals of Annecy

annecy crazy tourist

Often nicknamed the Little Venice of the Alps , the canals of Annecy offer great viewpoints of the city.

Annecy is crossed by the Thiou River, which flows into the lake. This river splits into two branches at the Quai des Clarisses and Quai des Cordeliers and then continues its way through Annecy, sometimes flowing underground.

Take the time to look for the prettiest canals of Annecy, always full of flowers, for some perfect postcard pictures.

Relax by Lake Annecy

annecy crazy tourist

Lake Annecy , with good weather, is a postcard landscape with its surrounding mountains, pristine waters, and flowered shores. Today, Lake Annecy is one of the purest lakes in Europe, with waters that can reach up to 24C during the hottest days of the year.

annecy crazy tourist

Hanging around the lake is one of the best things to do in Annecy . The best places for walking and relaxing on the shores of Lake Annecy are:

  • The Gardens of Europe is also great for a picnic on the grass or a nap in the shade
  • Le Pâquier, this 7 Hectare esplanade by the lake is the dream place for a picnic but also the corner for joggers and walkers.
  • Plage des Marquisats , in the south of the city. This is a green space laid out like a “beach,” with showers, toilets, and other facilities.
  • Plage de l’Impérial , similar to Plage des Marquisats but in the north of the city.

And, of course, there are many water activities in the lake, like paddling or boat cruises. For more freedom, you can  rent a boat in Annecy  (different types available) to spend an afternoon or a day on the lake.

Dangle your Feet in the Water at Le Pâquier

annecy crazy tourist

After a hearty Savoyard dinner, leave the crowds of the Old Town and go to the Pâquier for some fresh air and a stroll along the Canal du Vassé .

Between 1852 and 1863, Le Pâquier (a Savoyard word that means “pasture”) was cleansed and filled up, and the quays were built up, giving the place its current appearance. The Pâquier and the Gardens of Europe are linked via a metallic footbridge, nicknamed the Pont des Amours (Love Bridge) by locals.

Le Pâquier is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Annecy, especially beautiful in the afternoon and until sunset. Close to the Pont des Amours, some wooden pontoons are perfect for a last drink for two dangling your feet in the water. After walking all day exploring the Old Town, this was heaven for my feet!!!

You can decide the do the full tour, explore the lake’s small towns, or stop at one of the beaches.

We chose one of the hottest summer weekends to travel to Annecy, and the lake beaches were jam-packed. Finally, we found a hidden spot perfect for a picnic on the grass and a bath with a view (named ‘Plage du Château’ on Google maps). The castle in the background is Château de Duingt, built on a small peninsula.

A Relaxing Afternoon by the Lake

annecy crazy tourist

Lake Annecy’s extraordinary natural scenery is the perfect background for a relaxing afternoon. The shores of the lake are dotted with beach bars to chill out while sipping your favorite cocktail. There are also beautiful beachfront hotels offering great facilities for a relaxing stay like a private beach, bar-terrace, and even yoga classes with a view

For this Annecy trip, we preferred to stay out of the hustle and bustle of the Old Town, and we booked a room at the beautiful Black Bass Hotel , located on the outskirts of Annecy. With a pool and surrounding grounds with beautiful lake views, this lazy afternoon in the hotel was one of our favorite things to do in Annecy.
