Stellaris Star Trek total conversion mod launches impressive update

The still-in-alpha New Horizons adds to its already long list of features.

stellaris star trek conversion

When we first covered G-Man's New Horizons Star Trek mod last year, the Stellaris total conversion boasted an impressive 38 pre-scripted races with canon starting positions, and five playable factions and their ships, among a host of other neat mechanics and features. It's now dropped its Alpha 0.9 update which lifts that number of races above 50, and adds a load of new ships and weapons to boot.

In preparation of its eventual Beta 0.1 stage, Alpha 0.9 also introduces new mechanics which allow players to customise their ships, spaceports and empires; while also adding re-designed edict and policy trees, an overhauled ground combat system, and larger star bases. Of the exhaustive list , this particular addition sounds great:

"More Espionage! As the federation grows stronger, the secret order of the Romulan Tal Shiar plans its downfall… a new espionage and sabotage mechanic has been developed, allowing the Romulans to do harm to their enemies from afar. Will you destroy their fleets? Or go after their infrastructure? Of course, the Tal Shiar are not the only organization… and the Obsidian Order is about to teach those pointy-ears how it’s done."

Here's YouTube person Lyellin2 putting the latest iteration of New Horizons through its paces:

Stellaris' New Horizons mod is the best Star Trek game

It's Stellaris, Jim, but not as we know it,

Everything was in place for the Romulan invasion of the United Federation of Planets. Warbirds screeched out of the shipyards of Romulus and Remus on a direct course for the closest Federation worlds, those belonging to the chilly Andorians. The real goal, of course, was neighbouring Vulcan. This was a symbolic war.

As my jade vessels bombarded the frozen Andorian homeworld, the Tal Shiar informed me that yet another Federation ship had been successfully sabotaged. When my Reman shock troops’ boots hit the icy ground, I realised that Star Trek: New Horizons , a Stellaris [ official site ] mod, was my favourite ever Roddenbery-flavoured game.

I noticed New Horizons at just the right time. With a new Star Trek show in production, my hunger for that venerable sci-fi universe has increased tenfold, and I’ve found myself once again devouring the previous shows. I’m going through the best of the bunch, Deep Space Nine, at the moment, and it remains just as compelling as it did back when I first sat, transfixed, after school, watching the adventure of Sisko and his eclectic crew.

stellaris star trek conversion

There isn’t a 4X game better suited to Star Trek than Stellaris, not even the official one from 1999, Birth of the Federation, which was terrible despite the countless hours I spent wasting my time with it. Even without mods, Stellaris evokes the universe of Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Scott Bakula’s hairy chest. The focus on exploration, sci-fi mysteries and epic yarns make them superb bedfellows.

None of this is to say that the New Horizons team haven’t done a tremendous amount of work, adding a dizzying array of Star Trek species with appropriate traits, multiple maps of the galaxy – different sizes depending on the beefiness of your PC – complete with canon starting positions and countless species-specific touches like the aforementioned sneaky buggers, the Tal Shiar.

stellaris star trek conversion

It might be far from finished, but I can’t think of many things that could make it feel more authentic. Everything from technology to statistical bonuses has been run through a Treky filter. So the Klingon Empire uses disrupters and the Dominion uses polaron beams, and when you’re designing your own ships, you can slap on modules like tactical stations and deflector arrays. And they’re more than just Stellaris components with fancy new names.

The scale of the thing astounds me. Downloading it, I prepared myself for loads of bugs and missing features, expecting just a slice of Star Trek rather than the whole cake. What greeted me was a cake buffet. See, New Horizons simulates the entire history of Star Trek, from the pre-Federation Enterprise era onwards. And while the galaxy evolves through conquest, expansion and technological advancement, it also transforms through the events system that Stellaris uses so well.

stellaris star trek conversion

Events run the gamut from the creation of the Federation to the development of new ship designs, reflecting the changes between the different shows. You don’t want to be flitting around the galaxy in an NX-class vessel for the whole game. At certain junctures, you’ll be notified of scientists and groups who have new ideas, eureka moments, making your ships more effective. Take a look at your shipyards after these events and you’ll notice that your vessels have been upgraded from, say, TOS-era ships to TNG ones.

In my Romulan game, the redesign event also forced me to make some important leadership decisions. I had two ship designers vying for my attention. One, a Romulan military chap, the other a member of a species that was under the empire’s control. Romulans are pretty racist, but the alien engineer was the superior candidate. By choosing him, I ruffled some feathers, but he also became a scientist I could recruit and set to work researching new engineering tech or send off as captain of his own science vessel. I wanted to make my version of the Romulans a wee bit more egalitarian.

stellaris star trek conversion

While New Horizons gives you the freedom to rewrite Star Trek history – maybe the Romulans left Khitomer alone and became friends with the Klingons – it always feels strongly connected to the shows, full of nods to specific episodes drawn from the universe’s long history. One of my explorers was zapped by a probe that made them live out a dead man’s life in a lost civilisation. Another discovered that a transporter malfunction from years ago created second versions of themselves. For the uninitiated they are surprises rich in meaningful choices, but for fans they evoke memories of some of Star Trek’s strongest storylines.

A lot of what makes the mod such a great Star Trek game simultaneously makes it a great 4X game, taking things like Stellaris’ brilliant asymmetry and running with it, enhancing it even. Take the state of the galaxy at the start of a campaign, for example. Every species feels dramatically different.

stellaris star trek conversion

The pre-Federation humans inhabit only a tiny part of the galaxy and start off as fairly insignificant, while older species, like the Founders, the shape-shifting rulers of the Dominion, begin from a position of strength. They’ve colonised several systems, have planets full of loyal Vorta – talented clone administrators who evolved on tropical worlds, just like their TV counterparts – and they’re effectively immortal.

All of these things make the Milky Way feel diverse and lived in, a place where thousands of years of history have already played out. There are giant empires and underdogs, blossoming friendships and established grudges. This variety makes it a fascinating 4X game, even if you aren’t invested in the Star Trek theme. It helps if you are, of course. I’ve started up a dozen different games already just to see how the team have managed to transpose stuff from the TV and cinematic universe to the game, turning the elements that make a species interesting into actual mechanics or traits like the Borg’s penchant for assimilating all life.

stellaris star trek conversion

With so much stuff going on, New Horizons also makes a valiant attempt to fix the mid-game slog that can infect the vanilla game, where you’ve finished exploring and the galaxy sort of drifts into this status quo that’s only shaken up when massive factions decide to go to war. The politics, intrigue, Klingon civil wars and bespoke storylines keep things moving along in a pacy fashion. There are still moments where things grind to a halt, though, and the advantages that some species have go a little beyond asymmetry and threaten to enter the realm of game-breaking imbalance, but it is still a work-in-progress.

If my unapologetic gushing hasn’t already made it clear: New Horizons is something pretty special, and you’d be dafter than a dopey Pakled if you aren’t already hovering over the subscribe button in the Steam Workshop .

15 Best Stellaris Overhaul & Total Conversion Mods

Aesthetic Cinematic Mod (Stellaris)

If Stellaris has grabbed you with as much strength as it did me, you’ll burn through the game in no time.

Life is short, and nobody has time to wait for Paradox to drop the next content pack to return to the game.

So it’s time to turn to the modding community .

Just as minor mods are meant to polish your experience, plenty of massive expansions, overhauls, and total conversions will make you feel like it’s a brand-new game. Let me show you some of the best!

15. UI Overhaul Dynamic

UI Overhaul Dynamic / Stellaris Mod

Check Out This Mod

UI Overhaul Dynamic leaves nothing untouched in its pursuit to deliver the most comfortable user experience.

This comprehensive remodel of the user interface adapts every element to your screen resolution, increases the size of menus, and makes everything easier to navigate.

With this installed, you’ll have space for more information on-screen without needing to scroll down, so you can easily consider every alternative and data point when making decisions.

14. Stellaris Fresh Start

Stellaris Fresh Start / Stellaris Mod

Stellaris Fresh Start is the way to go if you’re interested in a vanilla-flavored overhaul that’ll give you something new to chew on.

This mod leaves most of the game’s basic systems intact while introducing 40 new civics and 32 new tradition trees to create a new “balance.”

Something I also love about this mod is the top-notch humor hidden in the flavor text for some of these new civics and traditions.

For example, you can feed your population Lab-Grown Food that’s totally not Soylent or ban robots because “dey took er jobs.”

13. Production Revolution

Production Revolution / Stellaris Mod

You must have noticed how slow the game can get as the years go by.

This is mainly due to the AI micromanaging where their citizens work and live. Apparently, the AI runs a citizen-by-citizen check every month to determine the best role in the empire, which takes a lot of processing power.

Production Revolution is an overhaul of the economic system that takes micromanagement out of the equation.

Instead of individual workers, you now have a “Manpower” resource (based on your pops) that gets spread among available jobs.

This doesn’t just streamline the economy for the AI, but also for you, helping you focus on other aspects of gameplay like exploration, diplomacy, and combat.

12. Anime Galaxy

Anime Galaxy / Stellaris Mod

Since this is the internet and 4X grand strategy sci-fi epics are firmly in the realm of geek culture, I can assume at least half of you have a soft spot for Japanese animation .

If you belong to that group of Anime enthusiasts, you’ll find a lot to love in the Anime Galaxy mod, which promises to turn your Stellaris into a sci-fi waifu simulator.

The mod replaces every portrait for every race – including leaders, workers, slaves, and robots – with anime characters. Of course, Curators, Caravaneers, and Fallen Empires are also given a makeover.

There are badass warriors, adorable moe blobs, and everything in-between!

11. Twilight Imperium

Twilight Imperium / Stellaris Mod

Twilight Imperium is a fantastic board game. In it, you strive toward galactic conquest as one of several societies like the Emirates of Hacan and the wormhole-traveling Ghosts of Creuss.

In other words, it’s the closest thing you’ll get to a Stellaris board game before Stellaris: Infinite Legacy comes out.

Well this mod flips that idea by letting you play Stellaris as if it were a Twilight Imperium video game.

It introduces 17 prescripted empires based on the board game that’ll let you create a 100% Twilight Imperium galaxy by choosing one and forcing all AI to spawn as the rest.

You’ll also find new civics, traits, origins, and events straight from Twilight Imperium lore.

10. Stargate Universe Reborn

Stargate Universe Reborn / Stellaris Mod

Stellaris has a lot in common with Roland Emmerich’s Stargate – mainly the high likelihood of hostile aliens showing up and trying to extinguish your species at any point in time.

If you want to make them even more similar, I’d suggest the Stargate Universe Reborn mod, introducing everything you need for a distinctively Stargate-flavored playthrough.

This isn’t just a species pack with some cool shipsets . Because SUR also features new origins, traits, civics, megastructures, and custom events based on the well-loved military sci-fi franchise.

9. Balanced Space Warfare

Balanced Space Warfare / Stellaris Mod

Something that needs a lot of work to reach its full potential in Stellaris is combat .

Battles are determined almost exclusively by your fleet size, and it doesn’t make much sense to waste too much time designing your ships and fleets.

Balanced Space Warfare shatters this status quo by dramatically transforming the balance of space combat, forcing you to consider the composition of your fleet, the size of your ships, and your specific loadout against each enemy.

One of my favorite additions is “Spec Ops” ships, such as Corvettes that can self-destruct or capture enemy ships and “healer” vessels able to repair your fleet without visiting a shipyard.

8. Stellaris Evolved: Alpha

Stellaris Evolved: Alpha / Stellaris Mod

Stellaris Evolved is an ambitious overhaul that’s still a WIP – but it has a lot to show for itself even at this stage.

The mod features numerous additions to all areas of the game. This includes a complete rework of civics, technologies, buildings, and jobs.

It also upgrades the tradition system with advanced trees and new ascension paths.

You’ll notice some excellent additions to Ringworlds and Ecumenopolises and a new terraforming mechanism that can make even barren worlds useful to your empire.

As I mentioned before, the mod is a WIP, and the author has many significant updates planned. We’ll keep an eye on this one, and so should you!

7. Guilli’s Mods

Guilli's Mods Steam page

Guilliman is a bit of a legend in the Stellaris modding community, thanks to amazing mods like Guilli’s Planet Modifiers and Features and Guilli’s Exploration and Expansion Tweaks .

By themselves, each of these mods upgrades a different aspect of Stellaris.

Planet Modifiers and Features introduces an immense planet variety and many surprises on every celestial body, while Exploration and Expansion Tweaks makes exploration a more immersive and involved process.

Add Guilli’s Technologies to the mix, and you have an almost complete overhaul of the game.

Playing with all of them enabled feels like a significant step-up from vanilla.

6. Star Trek: New Civilizations

Star Trek: New Civilizations / Stellaris Mod

Star Trek is one of the biggest and most beloved sci-fi franchises in history.

And it’s one of the building blocks of geek culture worldwide.

ST: New Civilizations is a massive conversion bringing numerous galactic empires from the Star Trek universe to Stellaris so you can live long and prosper among the Romulans, Klingons, and Cardassians.

The mod also features a staggering 650 unique ships spread across 80 graphic styles based on Star Trek cultures. There are also 160 new species with varied clothing, multiple new events and crises, and engaging new mechanics based on Star Trek lore.

On the technical side, this mod streamlines the economic system for a faster late-game and revamps the entire technology progression to help you focus on your Star Trek roleplaying.

5. Star Oath Project

Star Oath Project / Stellaris Mod

Next up, we have an in-depth rework of the leader system with a significant dose of anime goodness.

Star Oath Project introduces hundreds of new leader traits for all leader types, but that’s only scraping the surface.

This mod also makes managing your leaders more engaging by giving you more control over their development.

SOP has a great UI that’ll let you access each leader’s skill trees and spend skill points like you would in an RPG. Additionally, you can change a leader’s portrait or even bring them back from the dead.

4. Aesthetic Cinematic Gameplay

Aesthetic Cinematic Gameplay / Stellaris Mod

Those interested in making Stellaris a more visually appealing experience can’t go wrong with Aesthetic Cinematic Gameplay.

ACG focuses on making space combat a big show that’ll draw your attention beyond keeping an eye on your fleet’s health bar.

Bigger explosions, flashier lasers, and many other additions make your ships look bad-ass in and out of combat.

In addition, this mod changes the UI to a dark blue color palette and introduces a lot of content to make space combat just a bit more interesting beyond the visuals.

3. Beyond the Relays

Beyond the Relays / Stellaris Mod

Fans of the Mass Effect franchise have been clamoring for more adventures in the Mass Effect universe ever since ME: Andromeda disappointed everyone, leaving a big hole in our hearts waiting to be filled.

Beyond the Relays offers an all-new perspective on the conflicts of Mass Effect’s Milky Way, letting you explore and attempt to conquer the galaxy as the Asari Republics, Turian Hierarchy, Salarian Union, or the Systems Alliance – among several others.

The mod doesn’t stop there, though. It’s a total conversion featuring custom shipsets, new buildings, multiple ME-themed crises (like the Reapers), and even a fully-functional Mass Relay network.

2. The New Era – A Total Conversion Mod

The New Era – A Total Conversion / Stellaris Mod

Not every total conversion is based on a popular media franchise.

The New Era is a 100% original take on Stellaris, bringing a wholly transformed experience with a unique focus and much different pacing.

This mod places you in an earlier era of galactic conquest. You’ll start out as a primitive species just making their way out into space and slowly advance toward the Era of Empires.

You’ll have to grapple with a new tech tree, a completely reworked economic system, redesigned planet development, etc.

If you’re looking for something truly different, this is it.

1. Star Wars: Legacy of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Legacy of the Old Republic / Stellaris Mod

After spending most of May 4th playing Star Wars: Legacy of the Old Republic, I can confidently say that it’s the best total conversion mod for Stellaris.

This custom adventure drops the player in the middle of an unstable galaxy ravaged by the Great Hyperspace War and Great Sith War, 4000 years before the Battle of Yavin (AKA the assault on the Death Star).

You can choose one of 37 prescripted empires, or create a new one with one of 50 species from the Star Wars universe .

You’ll notice new civics, origins, and lore-accurate namelists that’ll take your immersion to the next level.

This mod is packed full of content, including shipsets, events, crises, and a gigantic galaxy full of lore-accurate systems based on the Star Wars Legends continuity.

Hi quick question. Do you have a download available, that does not use steam? A friend of mine has got Stellaris via Prime Gaming this month for free and would like to join me in my adventures in the ST Universe. But we have no clue where and how to get the mod without using the Steam Workshop... edit: The Prime Gaming base game version was for GOG and I don't see a workshop there...

Just a note: you might want to adjust the Harmony tradition tree for Gestalt empires e.g. the Borg (since you enabled it for them, while the base game doesn't allow Gestalts to take Harmony presumably for this specific reason) because one of the traditions does absolutely nothing for Gestalts: the Pop Demotion Time doesn't do anything for Gestalts because their pops don't demote between stratas, they just take whatever job is available whether it's a Complex Drone job or Menial Drone job. Instead, you might want to add a line which (for Gestalt empires) switches that tradition to something like automatic resettling chance to keep the flavor. Same for Governing Ethics attraction from the same tradition tree. EDIT: Also, just noticed: the Orion 'Emotive Pheremones' trait doesn't actually seem to have any influence on crime (doesn't show up as a modifier in the planet crime, or the crime contribution from either Orion pops or my Klingon pops), so you might consider potentially changing that to something else if you can't get it to work as intended. Happiness would be an option, as it is the determining factor of Crime on the planet: Code: Crime = 2.00 * [1-Happiness] is the calculation for each pop on the planet, if you want to keep that goal of the effect (meaning a boost of "+5% Happiness" would result in "-5% Crime").

Star Trek: Infinite Really Does Just Look Like the Ultimate Stellaris Mod

Stellaris has long had a history of rich and deep total conversion mods, fan-made overhauls that let players take one of the most successful space strategy games of recent history and turn it into everything from Warhammer to Star Wars . Trek mods are no stranger to it either, but now they have new competition: an official Trek spin on 4X gaming from Paradox themselves.

Previously revealed at Summer Games Fest last weekend in a non-gameplay trailer, today, celebrating the fabled Captain Picard Day , Paradox and developer Nimble Giant Entertainment dropped new details on Star Trek: Infinite , a new game set in the era of the late 24th century that lets players take command of iconic Star Trek civilizations to Explore, Expand, Exploit, and Exterminate their way across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Head on over to the official Trek website to see the new trailer.

And yep: there’s no surprises that at least on the surface this very much looks like Paradox’s work on Stellaris already—similar mission trees, similar conversation windows, a similar aesthetic. It just so happens to be with a Star Trek coat of paint, as players pick one of four factions (the Federation, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union, and the Klingon Empire) to explore the galaxy. Each faction promises unique differences beyond aesthetics, including storyline quests and different strengths and weaknesses to how they navigate conflict, diplomacy, and resource management.

Honestly though? There’s nothing wrong with Infinite just being an official spin on Stellaris ’ mechanics, from the publisher that makes Stellaris . It’s a pretty perfect fit for Trek , and given the popularity of already turning Stellaris into Trek in the community anyway, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out with official backing.

Star Trek: Infinite will launch on PC sometime in Fall 2023, and is available to wishlist on Steam now.
