One of the things that makes the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Corridor a great place to live is that there’s always something to do here . 

Even with so many fun activities in the area, though, it’s still nice to get out of town every once in a while. Sure, jetting off to the beach is always an option, but what happens when you want to get away without flying? What if you want to get away for the weekend, or just for the day?

Luckily, eastern and central Iowa have more to offer than most people realize! Here are the top 14 things to do and see within a 3-hour drive of Iowa City.

American Gothic House

Where: Eldon When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 93 miles southwest Driving Time: 1 hours and 30 minutes

Though he was born in Anamosa, Iowa, Grant Wood’s inspiration for one of his most famous paintings, American Gothic , came from further south. The famous painter was on a tour in Eldon, Iowa (near Ottumwa) when he first spotted the little white house with the striking gothic window. This house became the backdrop for the iconic American Gothic , which now resides in the Art Institute of Chicago. Early sketches of the painting show only the house—proving it was in fact the house that served as the inspiration for Wood.  

The white home with the gothic window still stands in Eldon, Iowa. Though the interior of the home is only open once per month (on the second Saturday of each month, April—October), visitors can stop by year round to see the exterior that inspired one of the 20th century’s most famous paintings.

General Store Pub

Where: Stone City When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 37 miles north Driving Time: 50 minutes

Another historic building featured in a Grant Wood painting can be found further north in Stone City, a stone’s throw from Wood’s hometown of Anamosa. This painting, simply titled Stone City, Iowa , was Wood’s first major landscape and was painted the same year as American Gothic (1930). In the painting, Grant included the local General Store building, which sits on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River (the white building pictured on the right side of the painting).

Today, the store is called the General Store Pub and is a cozy destination restaurant and bar, complete with a 2-story deck. Make the drive north and grab a bite to eat inside a piece of living history, forever immortalized by Grant Wood’s paintbrush!

Backbone State Park

Where: Dundee When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 78 miles north Driving Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

While the Corridor is home to its share of beautiful state parks like Lake Macbride or Palisades-Kepler, if you’re looking for a change of scenery, Backbone State Park is an excellent choice. As Iowa’s first state park, Backbone is home to dozens of recreational activities. Hike 21 miles of trails, mountain bike the hilly terrain, trout fish in the stream, climb the limestone cliffs, camp with the family, or enjoy Backbone Lake on a boat, kayak, or canoe. In the winter, the hiking trails double as snowmobile and cross-country skiing trails, so the park has plenty to offer year-round!

Effigy Mounds National Monument

Where: Harpers Ferry  When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 120 miles northeast Driving Time: 2 hours and 25 minutes

Most people from the Corridor know about Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, but fewer folks know Iowa’s second national park site is less than 3 hours away! 

Effigy Mounds National Monument covers more than 3 square miles of wooded area along the edge of the Mississippi River. The park preserves more than 200 prehistoric mounds built by American Indian tribes anywhere from 750 – 1450 years ago. The mounds vary in shape, with the most common formations being round, linear, or in the form of birds and bears. Twenty mound-building tribes created these effigies, which serve as sacred and ceremonial sites.

Because the mounds can be observed in any season, even when they are covered in snow, the park is open year-round. You’ll see more than historic mounds on your hikes, too – there are stunning views of the Mississippi river along many of the trails. With several neighboring campsites and a nearby state park (Pikes Peak State Park), it’s the perfect opportunity to make an outdoorsy weekend out of it!

Field of Dreams

Where: Dyersville When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 78 miles northeast Driving Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Calling all baseball fans! This small-town Iowa farm was the filming site of the famous Field of Dreams movie, released in 1989. The field is open to visitors all year round and will host its second-ever MLB game (Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds) in August of 2022. Visitors can take a 30-minute guided tour of the 3-bedroom home attached to the field. Megafans can even rent the home for an overnight stay, or rent out the field for an event! 

Fun fact: contrary to popular belief, the iconic saying is not “If you build it, they will come.” It’s actually “If you build it, he will come”!

Lost Island Themepark

Where: Waterloo When: Open daily June – August and on weekends in September.  Distance from Iowa City: 80 miles northwest Driving Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes 

Lost Island is now more than just a water park! Their new 80-acre theme park features 33 rides and attractions, from arcades to roller coasters, all housed within five themed “realms”—Spirit, Air, Water, Fire, and Earth. Though a few rides are still under construction as of summer 2022, the park is open and operational.

Manchester Whitewater Park

Where: Manchester, on the Maquoketa River When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 66 miles north Driving Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes 

White water rafting in Iowa? Yep, you read that right! At the Manchester Whitewater Park on the Maquoketa River, you’ll experience thrills you’d normally have to travel outside of Iowa to find. 

The man-made park spans 800 feet of the river containing six 18-inch whitewater “drops.” You can bring your own kayaks, paddleboards, or tubes to float the rapids, or you can rent them from nearby outfitters. Other than this rental fee, the rapids are absolutely free to enjoy! 

The park is technically open 24/7, 365 days a year, though wetsuits are recommended to protect yourself from the freezing water in colder months! For a safe float, keep an eye on the water levels before setting out on your adventure.

Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge

Where: Prairie City When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 100 miles west Driving Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes 

Located near the aptly-named Prairie City, this wildlife refuge protects 6,000 acres of tallgrass prairie, which once covered 85% of Iowa. Explore the visitors center, walk miles of trails, or drive through the 800-acre enclosure for a chance to spot the bison and elk herds!

Sutliff Bridge

Where: Sutliff (near Lisbon) When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 20 miles northeast Driving Time: 25 minutes

This isn’t just any old bridge! Sutliff Bridge , completed in 1898, spans the Cedar River in three sections marked by impressive steel arches. Even though it has been closed to traffic since the 1980s, it continues to draw people from all over eastern Iowa and beyond for its beauty. After 100 years of service, it was appointed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. 

Of course, you can’t talk about Sutliff Bridge without mentioning Baxa’s General Store . The store opened in 1899, just one year after the bridge. Like the bridge, it served its purpose as a general store until the 1980s, when it officially transitioned to being a restaurant and tavern. Now, you can enjoy dinner and drinks with a beautiful view of the Cedar River and the iconic bridge.

Three miles north of the bridge you’ll also find Sutliff Farm and Cider House . Open Thursday through Sunday, April through December, this historic farmhouse doubles as a cidery and restaurant. Visit all three at once—the bridge, the General Store, and the Cider House—for a fun-filled, delicious day!

Swinging Bridge, a.k.a. Lover’s Leap Bridge

Where: Columbus Junction When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 36 miles south Driving Time: 40 minutes

Warning: this one is not for the faint of heart! This Swinging Bridge spans 262 feet, swaying 8 stories above a ravine commonly referred to as Lover’s Leap. (And yes, it really does swing slightly from side to side!)

Even better: this year marks the bridge’s 100th anniversary. Though the original bridge was built in the 1880s, it was deemed unsafe in 1902 and rebuilt in 1904. The second bridge lasted 16 years before it collapsed in 1920, sending two brothers plunging to the bottom of the ravine (both were unharmed). But don’t let the history scare you away: the current bridge has been holding steady since 1922, with plenty of updates, reinforcements, and regular safety checks so that visitors can continue to enjoy this hidden gem for years to come.

Where: Pella When: the first Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in May (May 4, 5, and 6 in 2023) Distance from Iowa City: 96 miles west Driving Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes 

Every October and November, the city of Pella plants more than 300,000 tulip bulbs throughout the community. Come May, these colorful tulips transform the town with their vibrant colors—pink, red, white, orange, and yellow tulips as far as the eye can see. 

This festival is specifically timed for when the tulips are at their prime, but Tulip Time is about more than just the flowers. It’s also a celebration of Pella’s strong Dutch heritage. Enjoy multiple parades, street vendors offering Dutch festival favorites (like stroopwafels!), tons of Dutch exhibits, and free admission to the Dutch market.

Wildcat Den State Park

Where: Muscatine When: Year round  Distance from Iowa City: 47 miles southeast Driving Time: 55 minutes

Take a step back in time to explore Iowa history at Wildcat Den State Park! Bordering the Mississippi river 10 miles northeast of Muscatine, this scenic park features many fascinating rock formations made of 300 million year-old sandstone. Hiking trails lead to the most well-known formations, including “Steamboat Rock,” “Devil’s Punchbowl,” and “Fat Man’s Squeeze.”

The park is also home to two historical buildings that attract visitors: the one-room Melpine Schoolhouse and the Pine Creek Grist Mill . Built in 1848 by Muscatine County’s first official resident, Benjamin Nye, the mill is thought to be the oldest working mill still located in its original site between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It’s also on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a hike to the mill and relax while listening to the peaceful sound of running water!

8 Weekend Getaways in Iowa with Scenic Escapes and Thriving Main Streets

The scent of century-old wood and worn leather hits me as I near the top of the stairs to the second floor of West End Architectural Salvage. The smell is reminiscent of summers spent with my cousins exploring boxes of forgotten toys in our grandpa’s attic.

I pause for a second, taken aback by the sheer number of salvaged items that fill this floor. An old chandelier catches my eye and I hang a left to go take a closer look. I hear my sister’s footsteps stop behind me as she, too, pauses in awe at the thousands of antique items.

As two creatives, this is our kind of shopping. We love the hunt and our imaginations run wild with ideas for repurposing items into home decor. I discover a whole section of vintage signs and call my sister over to take a look. A few minutes later, she excitedly motions me over to a table piled with gorgeous vintage glass jars. Before we know it, we’ve spent our entire morning wandering the four floors of West End Salvage.

My home state of Iowa itself epitomizes West End Salvage. Neither appears flashy or exciting from the outside but give them a chance and you will discover delightful treasures not found anywhere else.

You’ll still find the postcard-worthy cornfields, fabulous farmers markets and charming Main Streets you might expect from a Midwestern state, but you’ll also find hip cities with explosive local food scenes and lively entertainment districts. Whether you crave an urban adventure or rural getaway, Iowa really is the best of both worlds. You can get from vibrant city centers to astonishing scenic wonders in a matter of minutes.

Cedar Falls

Downtown Cedar Falls is a nationally-recognized downtown and vibrant arts and entertainment district. Ranging from eclectic decor and knitting supplies to natural makeup and kitchen essentials, there’s a variety of fun shops to explore.

Don’t miss Scratch Cupcakery, a popular Iowa business that got its start in downtown Cedar Falls. Blueberry Mojito, Oatmeal Cream Pie, and Root Beer Float are just a few of the flavors on the menu. Pick up a snack for the trip home from the gourmet popcorn shop or bulk candy store just down the street.

You’ll find a large network of bike trails and water trails to explore during your stay no matter the season. Check out a pair of binoculars at the Visitor Center and do some bird watching. Continue your weekend exploring the great outdoors with a trip to the University of Iowa Botanical Center and Hartman Reserve Nature Center.

Clear Lake is one of the best sailing lakes in the Midwest and sailboat races take place every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Step back in time with a visit to the Surf Ballroom. A must-play venue on the rock and roll circuit in the 1950s, it’s most famous for being the last concert venue for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson. Visitors are welcome year-round to admire the hardwood dance floor, ocean-front murals and leather booths reminiscent of milkshakes and rock-and-roll. Surf Ballroom remains an entertainment venue today so check for special events happening during your visit. The event calendar is packed during the summer months with the biggest bash taking place over the Fourth of July weekend.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat, look no further than the food trucks that pop up all over town. If you’re looking for a place to sit down, Clear Lake’s patio scene is the best in the state.

Head up the road to the tiny town of Bluffton, whose claim to fame is being home to Laura Ingalls Wilder for a short time as a child. Locals staff the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum & Park and celebrate their connection to the famous pioneer with Laura Days each summer, a festival complete with a parade, pioneer games, craft demonstrations and more.

After a day exploring the outdoors, relax with an evening at Mabe’s Pizza, a local hotspot that’s been serving up incredible thin crust pizza for generations. Mabe’s is located downtown among many brick storefronts filled with interesting shops and eateries. Beer and wine lovers will definitely want to visit Toppling Goliath Brewery and Winneshiek Wildberry Winery.

Downtown Des Moines is the place to go for arts and culture, entertainment and nightlife. Start by taking a walk through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park — a great place for a photo opp. If the weather is warm, there is bound to be an outdoor festival or event happening nearby. You’ll definitely want to check out the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market and catch a show at the Des Moines Civic Center or the Des Moines Community Playhouse.

West End Architectural Salvage is a treasure chest of interesting and quirky finds, made famous by the hit HGTV & DIY Network reality show, West End Salvage. You never know what you’ll find as you meander through this old warehouse that’s filled to the brim with everything from vintage license plates to reclaimed pocket doors.

The Historic East Village is filled with dining and shopping. Raygun, the self-proclaimed “greatest store in the universe” is known for the witty and sarcastic sayings it prints on t-shirts. Walk down the street for an entertaining meal at Zombie Burger, a local burger joint with a large dose of personality. Families will enjoy visits to the Blank Park Zoo, Science Center of Iowa, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and Brenton skating plaza.

Visit Des Moines in August to experience the Iowa State Fair. Take selfies with the butter cow, sample delicious fried foods (almost always served on a stick), check out amazing arts and crafts, and take in a free concert.

Take a stroll through Art on the River, an outdoor art exhibit that rotates sculptures each year. And be sure to visit the Dubuque Museum of Art, conveniently located downtown.

Before you leave, take in the picturesque scenery of the Mississippi River at the Fenelon Place Elevator. It’s the world’s shortest, steepest scenic railway and will take you 189 feet in the air for breathtaking views of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Visitors from around the world flood Pella for Tulip Time in May, a multi-day festival filled with parades, Dutch costumes, performances, craft fairs, quilt shows, and as the name hints, a plethora of tulips.

Visit the Pella Historical Village for a tour of the Vermeer Mill, an 1850s working mill that is the tallest in the country. The historical village surrounding the mill depicts pioneer life in Pella. Walk down the block to see the Klokkenspel, one of the only animated musical clocks left in the U.S. The Klokkenspel plays at the top of each hour and features mechanical figures that stand more than eight feet tall.

The Molengracht is a modern rendition of a Dutch mill canal with brick buildings surrounding a plaza with a canal complete with a drawbridge. This is the center for many activities throughout the year. Continue your walk to the nearby Pella Opera House for another dose of history. The Barton vintage organ and elegant tin ceiling are the focal points of this historic treasure.

Even more history awaits at the Scholte House Museum & Gardens which displays the life of Pella’s founder. Tour the 22 rooms inside the home and relax in the garden that bursts with colorful tulips and flowers during the warmer months. Be sure to also stop by one of the local bakeries for specialty Dutch pastries.

For a story, they have chased sled dogs across the frozen Boundary Waters of Minnesota, met farmers along Uganda's Nile River, and joined Indigenous beekeepers within Mexico's Riviera Maya jungle. They previously spent time as the travel editor for Midwest Living and the features editor at Discover magazine. As a freelancer and Spanish speaker, they now channel their expertise in travel and science communication into all types of storytelling projects. My high beams wash over the curves of Jackson County's country roads, bouncing off hand-painted signs in the overgrown grass: "Keep Going … You're Almost There." (Ready to feel old? The film was released in 1989.) But now Cedar Rapids and Dubuque have caught up, with lively cultural and dining scenes that make the region more weekend-able than ever. Cedar Rapids

Iowa's second-biggest city has long had a reputation for food-namely, the smell of Cap'n Crunch wafting from a Quaker Oats plant. But in the wake of devastating flooding in 2008, diverse eats have sprung up across the city, even spreading into nearby towns.

ln the Czech Village neighborhood, visit art studios, shops, and the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library .

The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art houses the world's largest collection of works by Iowa native Grant Wood. Nearby, visit the studio where he painted American Gothic.

In teeny Solon, 20 miles southeast, Big Grove Brewery serves standout bar food with its brews. Twenty minutes east of Cedar Rapids, Mount Vernon is a picturesque college town. Lincoln Wine Bar dishes incredible wood-fired pizza (and live weekend music).

Steeples and smokestacks crown the bluffs, and 25-plus murals by artists from across the U.S. cover downtown, thanks to a nonprofit projec t started in 2017. Spot them from the Mississippi riverfront to the burgeoning Millwork District in Iowa's oldest city.

In Cable Car Square, ride 189 feet up "the world's shortest, steepest scenic railway" via Fenelon Place Elevator Company for a tri-state view above the city.

An elegant lobby at Hotel Julien Dubuque preserves 180 years of history in wood-paneled columns and golden elevators. Small, cozy updated rooms overlook the Mississippi River.

Dimensional Brewing Company pours knockout IPAs. It joined 7 Hills Brewing and other Dubuque breweries that opened in the past several years.

Turtles and alligator gar fill freshwater habitats at The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium . You can get up close to the octopus and touch live stingrays in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit.

At Brazen Open Kitchen , taste the work of Kevin Scharpf. Try an elderflower gin cocktail frothed with egg white, salmon with vegan risotto or duck confit tacos, featuring tomato ceviche and cilantro.

Into the Wild

Whether nature is your overnight sanctuary or a stop to stretch your legs, these parks beyond Cedar Rapids and Dubuque have you covered.

1. Maquoketa Caves State Park

Blankets of green surround the caverns at Maquoketa Caves . Follow lighted pathways to the 1,110-foot-long Dance Hall Cave and cross the towering Natural Bridge. A park overhaul last year built a new footbridge and boardwalks. Brave visitors bring headlamps and belly-crawling clothes, but casual hikers find plenty to see, too.

2. Pikes Peak State Park

This park sprawls above the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers. It's a bit of a detour, but worth it for the best view in Iowa (and you can drive straight to the top). Plus, the scenic 55-mile drive from Dubuque follows the Great River Road.

3. Backbone State Park

Hikers and rock climbers share the namesake trail at Backbone . This gateway to northeast Iowa bluff country boasts trout fishing, 21 trail miles, two campgrounds and affordable cabins.

Bucket list stops

Pack your mitt for a visit to the actual Field of Dreams baseball diamond and filming location in Dyersville. The site 25 miles west of Dubuque offers tours of the farmhouse and lets you step onto the field. (And in 2021 and 2022, it hosted a pro ball game, too.)
