Freeform’s Love Trip: Paris Is About to Be Your New Favorite Dating Show

love trip paris freeform cast

If you've ever been unlucky in love and dreamed of moving to Paris for a romantic adventure, you're not alone. And in new Freeform reality dating show Love Trip: Paris , you can live vicariously through four young Americans taking the City of Lights by storm — and snagging plenty of kisses while they're at it.

The reality show takes a fun approach to a typical dating show, creating a more fluid, diverse, and queer environment. It follows four lucky aspiring Parisians who move in together in a Paris penthouse to find it full of potential suitors. There's Caroline, a personal trainer from New York who “thinks there is a strong possibility that her woman could be in Paris"; Rose, a Boston realtor who is eager for a passionate Frenchman; Lacy, a mental health podcaster based in Nashville who learned French during the pandemic and is looking for romantic prospects of any gender in Paris; and Josielyn, a Los Angeles model who feels destined for Parisian love. (Plus, for the Las Culturistas fans — Matt Rogers is narrating.)

Four young women in paris standing in front of the eiffel tower

In the first trailer for Love Trip: Paris , which Teen Vogue is premiering exclusively, we meet the four young women as they prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. As montages of picnics and Parisian landmarks flash by, Josielyn admits she often falls for “the wrong kind of people,” while Rose is determined: she even brought her own engagement ring. Luckily, the house is stacked with beautiful floors — and beautiful people. “Seduction is a game,” one French suitor says. Some may be better at it than others; Rose says the French dates have a “jealous, possessive nature,” while Caroline has found the one queer person in the world who doesn't care about astrology. Rouge flag?

Tune into all the escapist drama and romantic trysts when Love Trip: Paris premieres on Freeform on Feb. 14. Check out the trailer below:

‘Love Trip: Paris’ Cast On ‘Emotional’ Evictions & The One ‘Goal’ They Vowed To Stick By (Exclusive)

The 'Love Trip: Paris' cast opens up about the unbreakable 'bond' they formed as they tried to find love in the City of Lights.

Love Trip: Paris

There’s no better place to look for love than Paris, right? Well, Caroline Renner , Josielyn Aguilera , Lacy Hartselle , and Rose Zilla-Ba are doing just that. The stars of Freeform’s new series Love Trip: Paris , which airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m., spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about staying united on this journey.

Love Trip: Paris

“That was our only goal,” Caroline said. “Whether or not we found somebody, whether or not we walked out of there with the love of our lives or whatever it was, if we even got to that point, our only goal was what’s best for all of us is best for everybody. If we don’t support each other we have nothing. Our first loves were with each other, and that’s what continued us through the journey.”

Josielyn added, “Our hearts all became one. We all stood together as one… We were all really in it together. We all really looked out for each other.”

Lacy reflected on the bond that they formed as they went on parallel trips to find love. “We have this type of a bond that no one but the four of us will ever be able to understand, and it is such a gift,” she told HollywoodLife . “It does keep giving. We evolved together on the show. We watched each other navigate everything and experienced every emotion that you could imagine, and we really held each other strong. There was so much acceptance and love and respect and pride in the way that we view one another.”

Caroline got emotional about this “pivotal point” in her life. “To be able to watch that back, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving. The connections that we’ve made between the four of us is something that I’m never going to be able to express my complete gratitude for. This experience has touched my heart and my life so much,” she said through tears.

These four American girls have been unlucky in love in the United States, so they’ve moved to Paris to try and find their soulmates. Rose pointed out the biggest difference between the dating pool in Paris vs. the U.S.

“I think that culturally love is really important to the French. It’s really a culture of embracing that and beauty and romance is such a big thing,” she explained. “I think in the U.S. dating is much more casual, which is okay for some people. But the French really take things seriously almost to an extent we weren’t really expecting.”

As for how their journey to find love in Paris ends in the final chapter o f Love Trip: Paris , Rose remained coy: “I think we all try living life with no regrets and this show is ourselves just put out there. I think, as an experience, it was an amazing and life-changing one.”

Each week the women will have to make tough decisions in “eviction” ceremonies. If there’s a suitor they have a connection with, the key to their lock won’t open. If they’re ready to move on, the suitor’s key will open the lock.

Love Trip: Paris

“Evictions were very emotional,” Lacy said. “To be honest, it was because everyone was amazing. Even if there were people that maybe you didn’t have a romantic connection with you cared about them and they cared about you. Their energy made a statement, and it was noticed when it was gone. Evictions were hard.”

Love Trip: Paris is groundbreaking television in that we’re watching Josielyn, a trans woman, find love on TV. “It means everything to me. I don’t think you understand how important this is for me, for the community, for the trans community,” she told HollywoodLife . “This is a big thing and a real big moment and I feel like I just want people to see that I’m just like any one of these other girls trying to figure out love and romance. I deserve love and respect, and so does everyone else, and so do other trans men and women out there. It’s so huge that we’re able to show this experience on TV and on Freeform and on this platform… I just want to be myself. I definitely feel like the biggest thing for me was that I felt like I was 100% myself with these girls. I felt like I was never judged. I felt like I could just be me. It was the best experience for me.”

Love Trip Paris: Freeform’s dating show goes to an unexpected, refreshing place

Three people stand next to a short wall on a rooftop, and one sits on the wall

Cinematic shots of Paris, the phrase “sexist singles,” a hot air balloon date, a hot tub, men threatening each other, tears: Yes, the Freeform dating reality show Love Trip: Paris has all of the legally required elements of a dating reality TV show.

On first glance, it seems like Emily in Paris meets The Bachelor , perhaps. But Love Trip: Paris is far more subversive than its description suggests: “four American girls, unlucky in love in their own country, move into a penthouse in the middle of Paris to find a floor of French suitors waiting to date them.”

Okay, “subversive” may be going too far. Love Trip: Paris (Freeform, Tuesdays at 9) is still a dating reality TV show, where people live in a fantasy bubble and fall for each other quickly.

But it is a dating reality show that actually seems to reflect the inner lives of its 20-something cast members, instead of the antiquated ideas about dating and romance projected onto them by old Hollywood.

Seven people standing on a rooftop

Twenty-one years after The Bachelor ’s premiere, most shows still just remix its format: a man, a gaggle of women fighting for him, an engagement. They’re mired in ancient gender roles; even The Bachelorette , which gives a woman control over her own journey, remains regressive by taking that control from her in the end, when she doesn’t get to choose who to propose to. The men do that, because it’s impossible for the show’s producers to imagine a world in which women have agency in their relationships.

Attempts to stray from this format to be inclusive or progressive tend to be even worse, starting with the first gay dating show, Bravo’s Boy Meets Boy , which had a bunch of straight men pretending to be gay for the LOLs, all the way to Netflix’s hit Love is Blind , which pretends to be enlightened but is ultimately shallow .

The core of Love Trip: Paris is still very much the swirling molten lava of modern reality TV dating shows: cocktail parties, group events, one-on-one dates, suitors getting sent home and new ones arriving.

People fall for each other absurdly fast; there is petty drama over perceived slights. As narrator Matt Rogers— this Matt Rogers , not the American Idol one—says in the first few minutes, “The locations are foreign, but it’s the same old drama.”

It is decidedly not the same old show, though, and captivated me in a way I did not expect.

Four people sitting on couches clink champagne glasses

The four women of Love Trip: Paris live together in a luxurious Parisian apartment building. Eight suitors also live in the building, and are periodically replaced by the women who don’t see any possibility with them. It’s not clear where all this is headed—proposals?—but for now, they’re just flirting and dating.

While the cocktail party interactions are fleeting, the early one-on-one dates are reminiscent of those on the fantastic Dating Around , with some full conversations.

All of the cast have phones, and are able to text each other afterwords, just like they’d do in real life. (Showrunner Susan House told me in an interview that the production had an app built for the show, so what we’re seeing on-screen is not made-for-TV, and allows for more true-to-life interaction.)

After they all hang out, the four women can regroup, sitting on the floor of their apartment, drinking wine, and chatting about their options. So, too, can the group of suitors.

Hearing them process their options with each other, instead of with a host or just in confessional interviews with a producer, is a welcome change, as is their ability to text each other.

The women’s conversations aren’t superficial, either. They chat about who they’re interested in, and who they might let go. They identify green flags, like a suitor who’s in therapy.

One of the women, Caroline, says, “My therapist has done a fantastic job on me, like, no cap. She reads me for filth every week, and I live for it.” Another of the show’s stars, Lacey, says, “I’m kind of addicted to growth.”

Wait: reality TV stars who’ve been in therapy rather than going on a reality TV show instead of therapy? And who think it’s healthy for potential love interests to also be in therapy? It’s quite remarkable.

“They’re not trying to fit in this typical female protagonist box that we have seen in other dating shows,” Susan House told me. “Maybe in other shows, as a woman, sometimes you’re sweeping your neuroses under the rug, or you’re pretending that’s [something] you’re trying to get past. These girls are like: This is my issue, and I’m working on it. I’m talking to my therapist, I gotta do this . That’s what’s great about this generation: They just own their feelings. They own their issues. They’re happy to talk it through.”

A queer dating show that doesn’t need to announce it

Two people holding drinks, standing on a rooftop overlooking Paris

That’s not all that separates Love Trip: Paris from its predecessors: it’s as close to a queer dating show as we’ve come since MTV’s Are You The One: Come One, Come All , yet it never announces itself as that, and it’s neither as competitive nor as horny as that MTV show.

How the four stars and the suitors identify is not treated as some kind of grand announcement, nor is there any surprise nor shock from anyone on screen.

It’s just another piece of information, another aspect of their personality, when Rose says she’s looking for a husband; or Caroline says she’s “genderqueer, genderfluid, but I’m ready to find a woman”; or Josielyn describes herself as a “post-op trans woman”; or Lacey reveals she’s “very open” and “sexually fluid.”

The group of suitors are a mix of men and women, a straight man here, a “100 percent lesbian” there. One man talks about how his previous girlfriend was trans. Another wants an open relationship.

A shorter person looks up at a taller person as he holds her elbows in his hands

All of this diversity makes for far more interesting dating scenarios, and thus entertainment. Reality TV drama ahead!

By comparison, the expository lectures about sex and gender on CBS’s Survivor seem like someone desperately trying to explain an iPhone’s Face ID to their dying great-grandmother. It’s refreshing to just have people be themselves, rather than having it explained to us.

I’m certainly not arguing for sexuality to be tucked away and hidden from people that it scares, which is happening across the United States right now, with fascist politicians trying to erase LGBTQ+ people and a coordinated “ sweeping and ferocious attack ” against trans people.

Love Trip: Paris certainly does not hide anything, and gender identity even becomes a key part of an early argument.

But the Freeform show also doesn’t treat sexuality and gender identity like a magical new unicorn that’s just appeared and has to be explained to everyone watching. The people living this fantasy—and, presumably, those who will be watching it—already get it.

If you want a sense of how unbothered Gen Z is by the looseness of sexuality and gender identity, even while craving the same kind of connection that many of us do, Love Trip: Paris is an excellent text.

Unburdened by the tiresome anxiety about gender roles that infects other dating shows, it’s free to let its cast live their fantasy dating lives in Paris, hooking up or flipping out, crying or kissing. Whether the four women find true love or just build their Instagram followers, I’m glad to be on the journey with them.

Love Trip: Paris

A dating reality show I’ve seen that actually seems to reflect the inner lives of its 20-something cast members, instead of the antiquated ideas about dating. A –

What works for me:

  • A dating show that’s a fantasy while still reflecting reality
  • The casual, between-dates interaction between the well-cast women and suitors
  • The cinematography

What could be better:

  • More casual interaction between the women and their suitors, rather than just produced events and dates
  • A better sense of the endgame: Is this just about dating, or will there be some kind of forced decision?

‘Love Trip: Paris’ Is a Perfectly Chaotic Valentine’s Treat

The new Freeform series puts a spin on dusty dating shows, throwing four American women into the most romantic city in the world to go through suitors like clearance CVS candy.

If there’s one thing Americans love, it’s Paris. And if there’s one thing that Parisians hate, it’s American Francophiles. But you wouldn’t know that by watching Love Trip: Paris , the new Freeform dating show premiering Feb. 14 (which streams on Hulu the next day).

The series puts a refreshingly absurdist spin on tired format tropes. No no, the Parisians that cycle in and out of the giant pied-à-terre in Love Trip: Paris are so smitten with the prospect of dating an American that they will happily debase themselves in some of the silliest ways for even a chance at a date.

With Emily being trapped in Paris for the better part of the last three years, it’s a bit shocking that no one has thought to ship off a handful of American girls to the most romantic city in the world for a dating show. Bravo’s Real Girlfriends in Paris tried its hand at something similar last fall, but couldn’t nail the right combination of flirty fun and date-heavy drama. Love Trip: Paris wisely decides that going big is far better than going home, deboarding the plane back on American soil in disgrace. Like Valentine’s Day, its very existence is filled with romantic chaos.

Love Trip: Paris takes a pretty basic dating show conceit—stick a bunch of strangers in a house together and see what happens—and hits fast-forward. Single Americans Caroline, Rose, Lacy, and Josielyn are all looking for love after exhausting their offerings back home. In the Love Trip house, they gather under one roof and are each given access to a magical app (which is surely not real, but I adore the show for running with it anyway) that displays some strangers and apartment numbers. The show gives an entirely new meaning to “Meet Sexy Singles in Your Area Today.” Surprise surprise, these potential dates are all living on the floor below them.

You may ask yourself, “How is that a new concept?” Well, slow down. I’m getting there! Love Trip: Paris takes a hint of The Bachelor and spices it up with a little Parisian flair. The show capitalizes on the warring stereotypes that French people are either too possessive or too liberated. The collection of French singles is comprised of suitors who get jealous far too easily and others who like to play the field. This presents an inherent conflict for all four girls, who each want something different. For instance, Rose is there specifically to find a husband. Whereas Caroline would just like a girl who can be honest with her.

love trip paris freeform cast

Yes, you read that right. Love Trip: Paris is fluid, baby! Its cast isn’t just seeking Parisian men, but Parisian people! One of the most invigorating things about the show is that it doesn’t make a big deal out of its queer cast members. Caroline, a lesbian, is welcomed into the house without judgment, along with Lacy, who is sexually fluid, and Josielyn, who is trans and bisexual.

It’s beyond thrilling to see these women treated with love and respect, and not have to make their queerness a traumatic focal point of all of their experiences on the show. Love Trip: Paris transcends token casting and exploitation and instead sets up a safe and amiable environment for its cast. In a television landscape where reality dating competitions tip almost entirely cisgender and heterosexual, it’s exhilarating to watch these women navigate Paris and all of its sexy sweethearts while out and proud.

While the series certainly has a producer’s magic touch, its drama feels real instead of overly manufactured. The cast’s main mission is to date as many of the Parisians as they can to see who they click with. This, of course, results in a wave of extreme jealousy among the French cast—it’s just a matter of whether they’ll exorcize that on the American girls or each other.

In only the first three episodes, the Parisians are battling it out for time with the Americans, resulting in some heated French in-fighting. Other times, the Parisians will express their disbelief that one of the American women (who, again, are trying to get a sense of their options) would dare to go on another date with anyone else.

This latter form of jealousy leads to some fantastic laugh-out-loud moments, like when a French suitor named Roman gives Caroline a creepy charcoal drawing that Roman did of her… before they even have a chance to go on a date. Or, when Gessica (that’s “Jessica” with a “G,” or “Guess-ica,” if you want to have more fun with it), another French housemate, finds out that Josielyn was hot-tubbing with a guy after their date.

love trip paris freeform cast

Gessica dramatically pulls up selfies that she and Josielyn took together and deletes them, saying, “This is the day we had yesterday that you just threw away, so I’m going to delete [these photos] because I don’t want to keep the memories anymore.”

But the show isn’t all laughs, there are stakes here too. The Parisian housemates only have a small chunk of time to make an impression on the four American women. If they don’t, they’ll be sent packing, making room for two more French singles every week.

With plenty of hot new blood coming in every episode, each French contestant has to ensure that they’re connecting with someone, or they could be forgotten entirely. But if one of the Americans isn’t a match, they’re free to pursue another. They just have to be careful: these girls talk, and if the Parisians are behaving badly, it won’t end well.

love trip paris freeform cast

Love Trip: Paris is a bit like an overly convoluted dream. No one is really going to want to hear you talk it. it’s just something that you have to experience for yourself. And there are plenty of reasons to give it a shot. Whether it’s a French contestant named Camille—who looks like she strolled off the set of Ab Fab , carrying her own wine (and looking like she already dipped into it)—or a hot hunk named Mirko, who plays the show like a devious game (and whose Instagram account I need for science), everyone seems to have been plucked from obscurity to bring the perfect amount of seductive Parisian drama.

The best part of Love Trip: Paris , however, is its main quartet of hopeless American romantics. Each one of them is bubbly and filled with personality. But together, they form a friendship that grounds the show in a welcome dose of real reality. They stick up for each other, fight for each other, and genuinely want to see their new friends fall in love. Love Trip: Paris might be premiering on the most romantic holiday of the year, but the show is a fabulously fun reminder that our friends come first, and relationships are just a nice bonus along the way.

The 'Love Trip: Paris' cast dishes on what 'Emily in Paris' gets wrong about Parisians and what Americans can learn from the French about dating

  • On Freeform's "Love Trip: Paris," Francophiles search for love.
  • The cast shared what French people and Americans can learn from each other about dating.
  • They also revealed what "Emily In Paris" gets wrong about living in France.

Insider Today

Freeform's new dating series "Love Trip: Paris" takes viewers on a journey to Paris, where four Americans are searching for their life partners. Josielyn Aguilera, Lacy Hartselle, Caroline Renner, and Rose Zilla-Ba gave Insider all the tea on what it's like to date in France, including what French and American suitors can learn from each other and what Netflix's hit show "Emily In Paris" gets right and wrong about the city of love.

On "Love Trip: Paris," the four daters move into an apartment complex full of potential French love interests. The daters use an exclusive app to communicate with each other, and in each episode, the Americans decide which suitors have the key to their hearts—those who don't have to leave the residence.

As fast as potential love interests leave the complex, new ones come in, giving the show vibes distinctly similar to "Love Island" and "The Circle."

Since Josielyn, Rose, Caroline, and Lacy are Americans who've previously lived and dated in Paris, they also had thoughts on what Netflix's hit show "Emily In Pairs" gets right and wrong about French culture .

"There's a reason why maybe there are cliches, but they kind of go too overboard with it," Caroline said. "This is too much. You're beating a dead horse," they said, adding, "It gives me a headache just thinking about it."

"I think the French are very particular about things, which is made very clear in 'Emily in Paris,'" they continued, noting that if you do something wrong, "they'll call you out on it." But Caroline said that in real life, French people are less "obnoxious" than the Netflix show depicts and will help you adapt to their way of doing things rather than icing you out.

Dating in Paris

Of course, many people watching "Love Trip: Paris" probably have a lot of questions about what it's like to date in France, and will quickly learn that it's not all champagne and eclairs. In fact, the cast had a lot of strong feelings about what French people could learn from American daters .

"You don't give your soul over just because you've kissed someone," Lacy said, adding that French people can be jealous while dating.

"Possessiveness is not hot. I get that intention is really important, connection. But you don't own another person," added Caroline.

The cast struggled with how intensely the French daters expressed their emotions, but it was clear that American daters had a lot to learn from the French, too.

Related stories

American society, the cast agreed, is very rushed. But though they are intense, French people are very intentional with their time on dates.

"They will sit down with you, no cell phones, no distractions, and just be like, 'Let's talk. Let's get to know each other and let's create a memory," said Caroline.

"They will take you somewhere extravagant and memorable, everything is over the top just because that's the lifestyle that they want to live," Lacy said, recalling memories from the first time she lived in Paris. "They want to have a good moment and share it with someone they've never met. I'm like, 'Americans only do this if you've been together for a year, maybe."

The American and French daters on "Love Trip: Paris" have different gender identities and sexual orientations and the cast said that the most important message of the show is that no matter how you identify, everyone wants to fall in love.

"It's so amazing to see two amazing, beautiful women fall in love with each other and two amazing people get to meet each other for the first time and to get to experience that. I think that the more we see that on TV, film, the media, it's the more of a beautiful thing it'll be. Who knows, maybe that'll give a little kid out there the courage to be themselves," said Josielyn.

Episodes of "Love Trip: Paris" air Tuesdays from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Freeform.

'love trip: paris' on freeform is a fresh new take on reality dating.

The new Freeform dating show brings, love, laughs and plenty of drama!

LOS ANGELES -- Freeform is taking its dating show on the road, and across the pond, in "Love Trip: Paris." The show brings four American women, Lacy, Caroline, Rose and Josielyn, to Paris, to find amour.

"We move to Paris and we date French suitors, all dating the same pool, and they all live above us. And every week we have to evict some people to bring other people in," Lacy told On The Red Carpet. "There's lots of drama and lots of love and lots of laughs."

"The most laughs," Caroline added.

Being in the presence of these four women, one could understand the laughs. Doing the show together has created a new best friendship that they say they're most thrilled about.

"The universe was really, really, really nice in putting all of us together," Caroline said. "It wouldn't be what it is without the people."

"We all really really bonded. I'm so grateful we got to do this together," Josielyn said.

The ladies were all tight-lipped about whether they found love at the end of the show, but Josielyn did give us this tease, "It gets really fun, really flirty and really spicy!"

"Dating in general is really difficult anywhere you are, and this experience was amazing," Rose said. "There was a moment where you could just put everything aside and focus on your connections with others and dating in a way that nobody gets to experience."

Nobody, that is, until we get a season 2!

Watch two episodes of "Love Trip: Paris" tonight beginning at 9p.m. EST/8p.m. CST and then every Tuesday at 10p.m. EST/9p.m. CST on Freeform.

Josielyn Aguilera: Where is Love Trip Paris Cast Member Now?

of Josielyn Aguilera: Where is Love Trip Paris Cast Member Now?

Freeform’s dating reality TV show ‘Love Trip Paris’ follows four gorgeous women who leave their country and set to find love in Paris in ‘Emily in Paris’ style.  The four singles embark on a romantic quest while taking part in a risky social experiment for those who have had difficulty finding love in the United States. They will each have an extraordinary journey to Paris, where they will find their ideal life mate and stay in a penthouse in the heart of the city with French suitors eager to date them.

One of the beautiful singles, Josielyn Aguilera, entered the gorgeous penthouse with a dream of finding a perfect partner. Besides, she even built wonderful connections during her time on the show. Nevertheless, with the cameras now turned away, let’s take a closer look at Josielyn’s journey and find out where she is at present, shall we?

Josielyn Aguilera’s Love Trip Paris Journey

It is hard to believe that Josielyn was never in a serious relationship prior to her appearance on the show. She really hit it off with Gessica, whom she admired like an art piece. She revealed to Gessica that she is a “post-up trans woman,” and it was very difficult for her to grow up in a misogynist family. She also had a good thing going with Leo, who “blushed” at her comments. However, the date with Leo really affected Gessica. However, after careful consideration, she decided to choose Gessica. Unfortunately, due to a lot of drama, their relationship couldn’t continue, and Josielyn realized she was better off alone.

Josielyn did find love after coming on the show. She fell in love with herself and the city. While talking about her journey, Josielyn revealed, “I feel like that is the biggest thing, to be vulnerable with someone and also with yourself.” She added, “I learned so much about me and about knowing my own worth and my own value and always having that first. Making sure that I love who I am and I value everything that I’ve accomplished. I feel like that’s going to take me into loving and appreciating someone else.”

Josielyn Aguilera is Thriving as a Model Today

In season 1 of ‘Love Trip: Paris,’ we saw Josielyn Aguilera enter as a strong and free-spirited young woman who’s looking for love but wouldn’t settle for anything less than perfection. Her charming personality and smile quickly won over her suitors, who were trying their best to woo the actress. Professionally, Josielyn has a thick resume. Josielyn is a known personality in the film industry. Since her debut in ‘Jacked,’ she has made several appearances in projects like ‘Quantum Leap’ and ‘Not So Straight in Silver Lake.’

The photogenic artist is a model and currently resides in LA. She has been working with Slay Models on a contractual basis. Josielyn doesn’t appear to be dating anybody right now, but the stunning Latina actress is killing it every day. Josielyn is also an artist who creates fantastic artwork and designs, which she posts on her social media page. We wish Josielyn the very best in her journey to success, and we hope we get to see more of her on screen.

Queer-inclusive reality dating show 'Love Trip: Paris' breaks TV barriers on Freeform

"Love Trip: Paris" offers viewers a new take on reality TV.

A scene from "Love Trip: Paris."

Freeform's new "Love Trip: Paris" does what many other reality dating shows don't.

Reality TV has been criticized for its lack of diversity in race, gender expression, sexuality and body type. "Love Trip: Paris," by contrast, offers contestants a chance to find love in a structure that embraces the spectrum of gender and sexuality, featuring an inclusive cast of potential suitors, its showrunners and contestants say.

In this series, four American singles -- Josielyn Aguilera, Caroline Renner, Rose Zilla-Ba and Lacy Hartselle -- head to France to find the Parisian partner of their dreams.

The four contestants meet and date potential suitors of all genders and sexualities, choosing just a lucky few to take on dates.

"We're so used to seeing shows that are so whitewashed and heteronormative … but let's see the way the world has changed and has progressed," Hartselle, a pansexual woman -- which means she's open to being attracted to all gender identities -- told ABC News.

love trip paris freeform cast

Each episode, there's an elimination, where some suitors may be sent packing and new suitors come in to make a connection with the show's stars.

Hartselle said she grew up in a traditional Christian household in the South and found it hard to embrace her truest self growing up as a queer woman and eventual divorcee.

Seeing queer representation and romance on television in an authentic way is something she said she wishes she could have seen on screen as a young woman.

"There was so much I did not know and so much ignorance -- and ignorance is what leads to division," she said. "I just am beaming at the thought of what we have done by just being ourselves, by bringing our very human fullness, our strengths, our weaknesses, everything to the screen. You see us all, in all of our beautiful vulnerable glory."

love trip paris freeform cast

Aguilera, a transgender and bisexual Latina woman told ABC News she similarly grew up in a misogynistic culture. She said she hopes the stories on "Love Trip: Paris" can inspire the next generation of viewers looking for guidance on love, romance, and friendships.

"I hope that this really breaks that glass ceiling, of letting other shows like this exist," Aguilera said. "I hope this really breaks that and we get to start seeing more like LGBT people fall in love and more people of color fall in love -- more people in general just fall in love."

Renner, a nonbinary lesbian, told ABC News that showrunners reached out to her initially to explain the show's diversity goals, with which she was immediately on board. "I was like, 'Yes!' Like, I have been waiting for this moment to see something like this on television," she said.

Renner, who goes by she/they pronouns, continued, "It is so important to see every shape, size, color, sexuality, gender on television. Art reflects the world that we live in, and so, the world that we live in can't be reflected unless it shows every ounce of diversity possible and I am so proud of how diverse this show is."

Zilla-Ba, a straight woman who is Black, told ABC News that the inclusivity made her feel comfortable throughout her dating journey on the show. She said not having to worry about her safety allowed her to "let myself shine."

love trip paris freeform cast

"As a woman of color, dating people off of apps, you don't really know if it is a safe experience for you, and as for the other girls, all being queer, it's really scary dating in the real world in that way," Zilla-Ba said.

Reality TV has also been critiqued for failing to create space for people of marginalized groups to thrive. "Love Trip: Paris" executive producer Susan House said that this was one of the showrunners' main priorities.

"We want to help these girls, we want them to find love," House said in an interview. "But we also want them to have the most true experience possible. We wanted to give them room to express themselves, talk about things in interviews, talk to each other, like we wanted to just give them a safe space to really live these journeys."

love trip paris freeform cast

The cast members say they have already received praise about the show's diversity and its impact on viewers. They hope the world can learn that queer love is normal, and that "this is just who we are," Hartselle said.

Added Renner, "Love is love no matter what shape, size, color, gender, anything you are. We all have beating hearts. We all want to find love. Love is what makes the world go round. And we all deserve to find it."

Zilla-Ba agreed. "Not just that love is love," she said, "but you can have that fairytale type of love, no matter what kind of love it is."

Though the cast's final love matches have yet to be revealed, it's clear they were able to find loving friendships with each other.

"We really became a sisterhood and we really truly bonded so much, and it just means so much to have you girls in my life," Aguilera said, speaking to her castmates.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of both Freeform and ABC News.
