The Ford Excursion is still alive and it's available with six doors

The last Ford Excursion rolled off the assembly line in 2005, but one Oklahoma-based shop hasn't let the hulking SUV die.

Based in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Custom Autos by Tim continues to make "new" Ford Excursions. The Detroit News profiled the shop in a Tuesday report. The shop typically marries an older Excursion body to a new F-Series Super Duty pickup chassis to create a "new" vehicle. Buyers have a few options. Current owners can bring their SUVs to owner Tim Huskey for a total rebuild, the shop can start from scratch with a Super Duty chassis the buyer provides, or the shop can use one of its stockpile of Super Duty chassis that it offers to buyers. The shop's biggest hook, however, is the fact that it will use the Super Duty chassis to create a stretched Excursion with six doors.

'New' Ford Excursion SUV from Custom Autos by Time

Prices start at $40,000 for buyers who bring their own vehicles, but Huskey said most people spend between $50,000 and $100,000 for a conversion. The business, to put it bluntly, is quite stable.

Huskey said he's certain he has enough business to last him for the next five years. It takes two months to complete each build, and right now, there's a two-month waiting list. The shop does about 40 Excursions each year.

The work varies for each customer, but Huskey is a master fabricator when it comes to building the "new" models. For example, one Excursion kept the original SUV's engine, dashboard, and transmission, while the rest was made up of used Excursions and F-Series Super Duties that had been scrapped due to damage. With business booming, Huskey said he'll need to start using F-650 chassis since they still match up with the Excursion's body. Unfortunately, he added he's not able to work with the latest trucks from Ford with their aluminum bodies .

At Ford, there's reportedly no regret for ending production of the mammoth SUV more than a decade ago. For Huskey, it created an opportunity.

Remember the Ford Excursion ? First introduced in 2000, the super-sized SUV was infamous for its terrible fuel economy, with some models offering less than 10 mpg, but is perhaps best known for being the longest and heaviest SUV ever made, measuring 226.7 inches long and having a curb weight of up to 7,668 pounds.

It was available with eight or nine seats and came with 5.4-liter V8 as standard or an optionally available 6.8-liter V10. 7.3-liter and 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8s were also introduced. Its bad publicity led to Ford ending production of the Excursion in 2005 after selling just 16,283 units. But if modern SUVs aren't large enough for you, Custom Autos by Tim is giving the Excursion a new lease of life, as there are still enthusiasts willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a "new" Excursion.

Based in Oklahoma, the company marries an older Excursion body to a new F-Series Super Duty pickup chassis to create a "new" Excursion. Customers can provide a donor vehicle or pay more for Custom Autos by Tim to use a chassis salvaged from around the country. Because of the greater use of aluminium, the firm can't convert 2017 model year or newer trucks. The shop even offers massive six-door versions.

If a client provides a truck the conversion takes six to 14 weeks. The Excursion conversions start at $41,000 for the four-door, $49,000 for the six-door, and $59,000 for a dually. In addition, there are also a wide variety of customization options such as different seats, rear HVAC system, up to six inches of suspension lift, and more. On average, people spend between $50,000 and $100,000 for a conversion according to The Detroit News .

There's clearly demand for the reborn Excursion, too, as Custom Autos by Tim has a two-month waiting list. On average, the shop builds 40 Excursions a year. "I'm 99% sure I'll be selling them for the next five years," the company's owner, Tim Huskey, told The Detroit News. "Excursion drivers love them. They will keep buying them."

"We're never getting rid of this," said Steve Simon, who paid Custom Autos to rebuild his 2005 model. "We drove across the country in it a couple of times. You don't have to think about, 'Oh, we can't take this, or we can't take that.' Nobody's got a car big enough to comfortably fit six people in it anymore."

Remember the gigantic Ford Excursion, which was built on an F-250 chassis? Introduced for the 2000 model year as a direct rival of the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL, it is the longest and heaviest mass-produced SUV of all time.

Production of the Excursion ended in 2005 and Ford quickly replaced it with a long-wheelbase MAX version of the Expedition using the F-150 chassis. Despite its very short existence, the Excursion enjoyed a strong following. Even today, some people scour the used-car market to find one and others will spend a fortune to have a rebuilt example in their driveway.

Custom Autos, a tuning shop in Oklahoma, has been making new Ford Excursions for the past few years by combining the front and rear sections of the vehicle with the chassis of a 2016 Ford Super Duty pickup. They can build around 40 units per year, each one requiring two months of work.

Customers who bring their own chassis can expect to pay at least $40,000 USD; otherwise, the price goes up. Same thing if they opt for modern electronics, custom paints, a grille treatment or additional doors as shown on these pictures.

Shop owner Tim Huskey says most people spend between $50,000 and $100,000 for a rebuilt Ford Excursion.

Since 2016 Super Duty trucks are starting to run out and the new generation doesn’t work because of the aluminum, Huskey says he might have to turn to F-650 chassis soon and expects to continue to build custom Excursions for at least the next five years.
