Deep Purple Show No Signs Of Slowing Down With Fresh Set At Saratoga
Deep Purple are in the midst of another North American tour which finds them out on the road supporting their latest release =1 . While the album has not charted on the regular U.S. album charts it did reach #12 on the Top Album Sales chart (for further info on the charts and what they mean go to www.billboard.com). It is clearly the bands best album in quite some time. The band have been releasing albums regularly including five over the past eleven years. This tour also features YES and Hannah Wicklund.
Deep Purple took to the stage as only they know how with a blistering “Highway Star” right out of the gate. Without pausing the band broke into “A Bit On the Side” which would be the first of four new songs to be featured during the 110-minute set. Who would have thought that Deep Purple would be playing longer sets this day and age.
The band still has the stable core of Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover and lone original member drummer Ian Paice. Keyboardist Don Airey took over for Jon Lord when he retired in 2002. Joining them were guitarist Simon McBride who took over for Steve Morse in 2022. They are playing as tight as I ever seen this band play. McBride’s playing was solid yet his own style which seemed to have breathed new life into the songs. Everyone appeared to be on top of their game as the U.S. tour winds down.
The set list really took an overhaul for this tour with lots of songs such as “Perfect Strangers” and “Strange Kind Of Woman” both long time staples taking a seat on the bench. Something had to go for the band to be able to add in new songs “Portable Door” and “Lazy Sod” both standouts from the new album. I also love how the band had just recently added in “When A Blind Man Cries” from Machine Head . These guys are far from being a nostalgia act and are seeing a renaissance of sorts. They are still enjoying performing and are delivering the goods and showing they are far from being finished.
Yes is another band who have been around the block about as long as Deep Purple has been. Today’s version also are still putting out new music including their latest offering 2023’s Mirror to the Sky . With the band’s 70-minute set they decided to mix in some some standards as opposed to mixing in some rarer songs.
The band today has been stable for a few years when drummer Jay Schellen took over behind the kit full-time. Nobody has been in the band longer than guitarist Steve Howe. Joining them were keyboardist Geoffrey Downes, bassist Billy Sherwood and vocalist Jon Davison. To watch Howe play was mesmerizing especially when the band performed “Going For The One” as he played the pedal steel guitar. Howe is a marvel to be playing at such an elite level this late into his career.
I thought the whole band sounded stronger than when I saw them last October on the Classic Tales of Yes tour. It is really hard to come up with a set list when you have 23 albums to choose from. Plus you can only fit in so many in your allotted time. The band did a fine job satisfying everyone whether a casual fan, diehard fan or even for a new fan. Highlights included a stellar version of “Yours Is No Disgrace” and “Sibnerian Khatru”. The encore began with what else than “Roundabout”. Saving the best for last with “Starship Trooper”, I always say the band has never recorded a song any better.
It was a fantastic double bill featuring two bands who are simply legendary. To still see these guys perform at not only the level they did but the fact they are still out there doing it giving the fans quality shows makes it a win-win for all.

Deep Purple – AO Arena Manchester – Live Review
Deep Purple hit the AO Arena in Manchester on Wednesday more than ably supported by Blue Öyster Cult. With more than just a hint of nostalgia, Nigel reports back for Louder Than War with photos by Charlotte Wellings.
Man, this is loud! – I can only imagine the feeling that Gillian must get every night of this tour fronting the aural juggernaut that is Deep Purple. 54 years in the making and 50 since possibly the best live album ever made, Made in Japan. “I want everything louder than everything else’ said Ian Gillan in 1972 – just a simple phrase; but a mandate for the career of one of the greatest rock bands in history.
Opening the show is Blue Öyster Cult, who it must be said, came pretty close in the live album stakes with On Your Feet or On Your Knees in ‘75. That album, with its standout track Born to Be Wild is welded into the memory of every pre-punk school kid of the day. it was loud, it was raucous, and it cemented them as one of coolest live rock bands of the day. Tonight however, it’s all together more scaled back affair. Without the benefit of the full Purple PA, the band seems to lack a little oomph. It’s a great set of greatest hits and ends with the iconic Don’t fear The Reaper which sees the crowd is up on its feet – yes, it’s seated – a weird one!
Oh, so dramatic, the stage goes black while the speakers boom out Holst’s The Planets. The band find their places before exploding into Highway Star. It’s a big number to kick the show off with and the front man’s voice really could have done with something a little easier. He quickly get’s into and here we are. Deep Purple, three original members from ‘Mk I/II’ – Ian Gillan, Roger Glover (on bass) and Ian Paice (on drums), augmented by Don Airey on keyboards, replacing the late Jon Lord, and Simon McBride on lead guitar, who recently took over from Steve Morse, himself taking over from Richie Blackmore via Joe Satriani. It’s like this with these iconic rock band – keep up!
They keep up the pace with Pictures of Home from Machine Head before dropping in the newer stuff with No Need to Shout and Nothing at All from 2021’s Woosh. (I read later that the album was produced by Bob Ezrin who worked on Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies). That they have a pool of newer songs to pull on is pretty unique in the arena (ahem) of big rock bands. The tracks fit in easily – testament to their continued prowess as songwriters, and allow Airey and McBride to show off the classic keys vs strings motif so typical of the band’s output over the years, and used to great effect here.
It’s the effortless way that Gillan wraps his tonsils around these tracks that not only defines this band, but heavy rock singers in general. It was only when the amps got bigger, the bass heavier and the drums more deafening, that these guys needed a certain type of voice to cut through. Think Plant, Osborne and Bon Scott. If you’re going to front a heavy rock band, you need to cut through the maelstrom. Maybe it was this kind of convergent evolution that these guys were chosen in the first place. There’s no mystery in Angus Young going after Noddy Holder when Scott died, finally settling on Brian Johnson. Here we’ve got Gillan’s incredible voice, which can flick from baritone to falsetto in a nanosecond, topping this thunderous rollercoaster. After the slightly cracked opener he settles into classic Purple mode – screaming – faultless into the mic. After more than half a century his vocal acrobatics are simply remarkable.
Uncommon Man is dedicated to the ‘sadly departed’ Jon Lord with a perfectly pitched, piercing guitar solo played by McBride who’d easily give Blackmore a run for his money. It’s Hazel driven Maggot Brain and all those Hendrix inspired metal solos melded in one huge, uplifting and emotional anthem. Ian Paice does an amazing job underpinning this, pulled forward to give equal presence to Airey on keys. It’s all morphs into something quite majestic – an uncommon fanfare for the common man.
Airey fires up his Hammond organ once again, sending sub-sonics around the arena; crunching, rumbling, and at one point jamming something between the keys. He holds the note while pouring a beer and smiling to the crowd. Maybe it was a Keith Emerson dagger? A recreation of one of the most iconic moments in ‘60s rock when The Nice performed America on TV. It breaks into the overblown Southern boogie of Lazy, where guitar and keyboards fight each other through a series of strings vs keys set pieces, before Gillan steps forward after a full five minutes to layer on some vocals and harmonica. There are few tracks that can beat Lazy in full flow. The sheer power of those extended guitar solos and duelling instruments leaves you breathless.
When a Blind Man Cries is a touching lament to the stoic nature of those most deprived in society. Powerful rousing and uplifting with an incredible held Gillan vocal.
Anya and the following keyboard solo give Airey a chance to properly show off. The solo owes more than a little to Rick Wakeman, especially as it breaks into boogie woogie, through rag time before passing through the Coronation Street theme! Mad but kind of cool – the audience loves it. ‘Don Airey Rules’ says the sign in the crowd. Indeed he does! Of course, what we have here are four virtuoso performers sharing the same stage. It always was, with Lord, Blackmore, Paice & Ashton – all polished musicians.
Opening Space Truckin’ Gillan’s vocals are properly opened up as he squeals into the mic. And here we go again, just like Lazy the midsection of this song properly gets you going; the musicianship is incredible and in many ways it’s like sinking into a warm bath, so familiar, so all enveloping, so Made in Japan!
Smoke on the Water, the ultimate in knuckle dragger rock – it comes with its own kind of simplistic paranoid majesty. Zappa is still staying over there in Montreux and the gambling house is still burning down. It’s kind of dumb, but also the reason so many kids picked up a guitar and had a go. It’s was probably partly responsible for half the rock bands out there.
Back to some proper ‘60s class with Hush, their first single. Covered by Kula Shaker of course, but there really isn’t anything quite like the original, even if it is swollen by the obligatory keyboard & bass solos in the middle, which frankly, this song never needed, but then that’s what the band is all about – shove what we can in and if it sounds good keep it. So it’s a jam between all four – playing off each other, which inevitably ends in a keys vs strings duel.
We get a big bass solo followed by Black Night which almost sounds lazy in comparison. Based on a Ricky Nelson riff from 1961, (in the summertime if you must know) via The Blue Magoos, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet – it’s a fitting closer to a great show.
It’s hard to see how far they can take this, but I can promise you one thing. Not one of them would have looked 50 years into the future and predicted this.
A cracking show and a rare chance to catch one of my pre-punk heroes. Nostalgia ain’t dead, yet.

Hush isn’t a Deep Purple original. Joe South I think sung it 1st, but a few people have done it.
My wife and I had a fantastic night in Manchester last week. When others still ply their trade with voices that time has taken its toll on, Ian Gillan still sounds at his best, still reaching those powerful and high notes as he did 50+ years ago. Well done D.P. and thanks for a great night. Oh yeah and the new kid on the block was brilliant. He certainly knows what his lead guitar is for and you could be led to believe that he has always been there.
Written by Joe South and a hit for Billy Joe Royal before DP released their version.

Deep purple has just 5 u.s. concerts left in 2023. here’s how to see them.
Have you always wanted to air guitar to “Smoke On The Water” performed live?
Now’s your chance.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Deep Purple are midway through a sprawling international tour.
Yes, you read that right.
The group that’s been together since 1968 and featuring original members like vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover and Ian Paice are still giving their all on the road 55 years after their pre-Moon landing formation in London.
However, you have to hurry — the classic rockers only have five North American shows remaining this year and they all take place from Feb. 10 through Feb. 21.
That includes huge concerts at Bensalem, PA’s Parx Casino on Friday, Feb. 10 and New Brunswick, NJ’s State Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 11.
So, if you want to hear “Hush,” “Highway Star,” “Perfect Strangers,” Child In Time” and, of course, “Smoke On The Water” live, here’s everything you need to know before it’s too late.
Deep Purple 2023 tour schedule
A complete calendar featuring all of Deep Purple’s tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found below.
Deep Purple new music
Being together for 55 years doesn’t mean Deep Purple doesn’t have more to give to the world.
In 2022, the band reached deep into their archives and dug out “ Extras: The Infinite B Sides and Bonus Songs” which is a must for any Purple superfan.
However, what we found most interesting was the band’s latest record of original music, 2021’s bluesy, New Orleans-y “Turning To Crime.”
Featuring epic rock (“7 and 7 Is”) as well as lively party startin’ tunes (“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu”) and two covers from B.B. King (“Let the Good Times Roll”) and Cream (“White Room”), the album is certainly a departure from the hard rockers’ heavy fare they’re famous for.
Still, for our money, the best track on the record is the Southern-fried rock and roll number “Oh Well.”
We’ve been listening to it on repeat all day.
You can hear the jubilant “Turning To Crime” album in its entirety here .
Classic rockers on tour in 2023
It’s hard to believe the ’60s were over 50 years ago now.
Still, many acts that defined the sound of the groundbreaking musical era are still kicking it and on the road this year.
Here are just five of our favorite acts that have been rocking out since Nixon was in office that you can see live in the next few months.
• Ringo Starr
• Dead and Company featuring John Mayer
• Tom Jones
• Graham Nash
• Santana
