Scheduling a ride with Uber Reserve: Does it cost more?

By Doug H , Updated August 29, 2023 14 Comments

Did you know that you can schedule an Uber up to 90 days in advance ?

The scheduling feature on Uber is called Uber Reserve, and it comes in handy when you want to book a ride ahead of time.

When you schedule a ride, you get a guaranteed upfront price , and you can often match you with a driver ahead of your pickup time.

But reservations can be more expensive than regular on-demand Uber rides because of the Uber reservation fee and other pricing practices.

Read on to learn how scheduled rides work, how much they cost, and how you can make sure that your scheduled ride actually arrives.

What you need to know

  • To schedule an Uber ride, tap the clock icon in the destination entry box
  • Reservations include a reservation fee, which may make the ride more expensive than expected
  • You can cancel a reserved ride for free up to 60 minutes before your reservation
  • Reservations aren’t 100% reliable. Keep an eye on your phone 20 minutes before your reservation to confirm that you match with a driver

How to schedule an Uber ride

On the home screen of the Uber app, tap the clock icon in the “Where to?” search bar . Then, select a time for your reservation from the dropdown menu and input your pickup & drop-off locations.

You can also find the clock icon after you enter a destination.

After you select a date and time, select a ride type and confirm your reservation. Finally, you’ll see a confirmation screen and the ride will appear in your upcoming trip s .

During the scheduling process, you’ll see an option to enable or disable ‘auto rematch.’ Auto rematch will match you with a new driver if your scheduled driver is late.

Drivers can see and accept your reservation in advance. You will get a notification to confirm that you are matched with a driver.

If you aren’t matched with a driver far in advance, you will still be matched with a driver around 20 minutes before your reservation.

How to manage or cancel a reserved ride

To manage your reserved ride:

From the home screen: Tap Activity, then find your ride under the Upcoming section at the top of the screen.

You can’t edit your ride after making the reservation. If you made a mistake, you need to cancel the ride and start over.

There is no cancellation fee if you cancel more than 60 minutes before the reserved time, so there’s no penalty for adjusting your ride when your plans change.

How much do reserved rides cost?

You will see an upfront price estimate when you book your reservation . The system creates a price for your ride by using market data to predict the appropriate cost on the day and time that you schedule.

Reserved rides also include a ‘reservation fee.’ The reservation fee is a variable charge that riders pay to compensate drivers for the additional wait time with reservations.

Your upfront price will only change if your trip ends up being much longer than expected, or if you change the destination.

Typically the upfront price will stay the same as long as the ride isn’t significantly longer than the initial estimate.

Does it cost more to reserve a ride?

If your scheduled ride seems more expensive than expected, it’s because of the reservation fee that is added to every scheduled ride.

Uber doesn’t say exactly how reservation fees or upfront prices are calculated, so there’s not much you can do to figure out how to get a better price.

If your reserved ride seems expensive, try placing the reservation at different times of the day to see if the price changes.

The old scheduling system (still active in some markets)

In the past, Uber had a scheduling feature that only sent out an automated request a few minutes before your scheduled time. Uber did not attempt to match you with a driver when you first scheduled the ride.

That scheduling system is still active in some markets. You’ll know if you’re using the older system if there’s no information about upfront driver matching.

Under the older system, there was a greater chance that no drivers would accept your ride during a busy time. Driver rematching with Uber Reserve has proved to be more reliable for passengers.

Cancel fees and wait time for reserved rides

You can cancel a reserved ride for free up to 60 minutes before your reservation. You will be charged a cancellation fee if you cancel less than 60 minutes before your reservation.

You can also cancel for free if your driver is going to be 10+ minutes late when they are matched with you.

Example of cancel fees & wait times in Los Angeles

How reliable are uber reservations.

There’s an important section in the terms and conditions for Uber reservations: “ Uber doesn’t guarantee a driver will accept your ride request. Your ride is confirmed once you receive your driver details. ”

If Uber doesn’t guarantee that a driver will accept your request, how reliable can reservations be?

There’s a very good chance that the driver will show up if you reserve a ride and get pre-matched with a driver.

But remember that Uber drivers are independent contractors and are free to cancel your ride with little or no penalty.

It’s easy to find stories from upset passengers who had drivers cancel reservations at the last minute. What’s going on?

Some Uber drivers don’t like reservations: Why your reservation is getting cancelled

The benefits of Uber Reserve come with some drawbacks for drivers. Some drivers cancel reservations or never accept them to begin with.

One reason is that the reservation pricing system may not correctly predict the best market price at the time of the ride, resulting in a scheduled ride that doesn’t pay the driver as much as other rides.

Let’s say your upfront reservation price was $25. If there is unexpected surge pricing at the time of your ride, it might mean that your driver could get paid more for another ride that uses the current market price.

Another reason is the excessive wait time for drivers. Reservations sometimes send drivers to the pickup location up to 25 minutes before the reservation, and drivers aren’t paid for that wait time.

Any additional unpaid wait time is frustrating for drivers, so many choose to cancel the ride or skip reservations altogether.

Post from an Uber driver of an Uber reserve ride with a 25 minute wait time

This driver might have to wait nearly half an hour. Unpaid!

Keep an eye on your phone when you have a reservation coming up!

To ensure you get a ride, keep an eye on your Uber app at least 20 minutes before your reservation time.

If you aren’t matched with a driver and there are only a few minutes until your reservation, consider cancelling the reservation and manually requesting another ride.

You can cancel the reservation at no charge if your driver is going to be 10+ minutes late when they are matched with you.

Yes, you can schedule multiple rides. They will all show up in the “Activity” section of the app. For the airport ride, you’ll have to follow directions in the app to find the rideshare pickup area. When you land, open the Uber app and input the hotel as your destination. For more info, here is a page specifically about IAH . In terms of the cost, you can input the ride into the Uber app any time to get a general sense for how much it will be. Because you’re new to the app, I would recommend taking a test ride or two to get familiar with the app. You don’t want an important trip like an airport ride to be your very first trip.

If you're planning on being somewhere at a specific time and need to arrange transportation to get there, Uber allows you to schedule rides in advance so that you don't have to do it when the time actually comes.

Related: What Rating Should You Give Your Uber, Lyft, or Other Driver?

Keep in mind, though, that scheduling an Uber ride in advance doesn't actually guarantee you'll get a ride. If you schedule a ride a week in advance, Uber drivers don't see your request until right when you need the ride---it still shows up as a normal request to nearby Uber drivers.

This means that if it's really busy out, you still may not get a ride as quickly as you probably expected. Or if it's an off-peak time, you still might be hard-pressed to find an Uber driver out on the roads.

In other words, it doesn't work like restaurant reservations---you don't get to skip the long line at the hostess desk just because you scheduled a reservation in advance. Instead, the Uber app just sends out a normal request for a ride at the time you specified.

The good news is that when the app does send out your request at the scheduled time, it spends up to 15 minutes constantly requesting a ride automatically if there's not an Uber driver currently looking for fares. In bigger cities this usually isn't a problem anyway, but in smaller cities where there may not be a lot of demand, Uber drivers can be hard to come by at certain hours during the day. In these instances, the Uber scheduling feature will keep trying for you.

Start off by opening up the Uber app on your phone and tapping the icon with a car and a clock to the right of the "Where to?" box.

Select the date and time when you want to schedule your ride. Take note that it will automatically add 15 minutes to the time you select. This 15-minute window is the  period where Uber will continuously request for a ride if it can't find one right away (as discussed above).

After you've selected a date and time, tap the "Set Pickup Time" button at the bottom. On Android, it's the "Set Pickup Window" button.

Now it's time to set the destination, and you can do that in a couple of ways. The first way is by tapping on "Where to?" and entering in a place or address manually. You can also select a predetermined location listed below that.

The second way is by finding the destination on the map, and then using the pin to determine the location. Do this by swiping down in the middle of the screen.

From there, drag the map around until the pin is placed on the location of your destination. When you've got your destination set, hit the "Done" button at the bottom.

When that's finalized, tap the "Schedule UberX" button at the bottom. On this screen, also take note of the estimated cost and the payment method the app will use. This is important because Uber scheduling currently doesn't support Apple Pay---you have to use a debit or credit card instead.

After your ride is scheduled, Uber will automatically request a ride for you starting at the time you specified.

Uber rolls out a new feature that lets you book a ride 30 days in advance

Uber reserve features a streamlined look, better matching, and a service fee.

Uber is rolling out a new feature that lets customers book a ride 30 days in advance called (you guessed it) Uber Reserve.

In some respects, this isn’t entirely new. Uber has been letting customers schedule rides in advance since 2016 . Lyft also allows customers to book rides as much as seven days ahead of time. But now, the feature is getting a new brand name, some notable tweaks to how drivers are connected with riders, and a service fee to incentivize drivers to accept these advance bookings.

Booking a car ahead of time has typically been the exclusive realm of for-hire vehicle services like black car and limo companies. Previously, Uber and Lyft, which place a huge premium on efficiency, have said such features are unnecessary when a car can be summoned to your front door in about five minutes. The worry has been that rather than responding to immediate ride requests, drivers would be wasting time circling a neighborhood, waiting for a scheduled customer.

  • Uber takes a victory lap on Prop 22 and talks about taking it national

But Uber has changed its tune, and its algorithm, to improve the matching process so drivers aren’t being forced to choose between scheduled rides and on-demand ones.

Starting this week, Uber Reserve will be live in 20 US cities. The process for booking a scheduled ride is much more streamlined than in the past. Rides can be booked as much as 30 days in advance but no less than two hours before the scheduled pickup.

In contrast to how Uber’s done it before, customers using Reserve will be matched with a driver two hours ahead of their pickup and presented with an upfront fare. Previously, Uber would let customers book rides in advance but wouldn’t match them with a driver until at least 15 minutes before the scheduled pickup time.

There will also be 15 minutes of wait time built into the pickup, so customers don’t feel too pressured. And if something goes wrong and the driver doesn’t make it, customers will receive $50 in credit to use in the Uber app.

The upfront fares will include a service fee ranging from $8–12

The upfront fares will include a service fee ranging from $8–12, depending on the market. “Obviously these trips are more expensive than the on demand version of the trip,” said Geoffrey Tam-Scott, product manager at Uber. “We’re trying to enable between the rider and driver the most reliable, assured experience that is possible. And so by adding this extra fee to the fare it makes the trips more attractive to drivers.”

Uber’s ride-hailing business has been pummeled by the coronavirus pandemic but is slowly starting to rebound. Gross bookings in its ride-hailing division, or the amount of money it takes in before paying drivers, fell 50 percent year over year. It’s a grim position but also a steady improvement over the second quarter, in which Uber’s ride-hailing business was down 73 percent year over year. Still, there was no mistaking the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the company’s core transportation business. Uber brought in $2.8 billion in adjusted revenue, an 18 percent decline year over year.

Uber Reserve predates the pandemic, and the company considered whether it was wise to roll out a new product — especially one with clear connections to airport trips — during a time when most customers continue to avoid everything except extremely local trips.

But Uber sees this new Reserve feature as having utility outside the world of business travel. Tam-Scott said it could be used for booking a ride to a doctor’s appointment or the grocery store when crowds aren’t as common.

“There’s still very much this need for certainty and assurance and reliability,” he said, “maybe even more so during the pandemic.”

How To Schedule a Ride in Advance with Uber

How To Schedule a Ride in Advance with Uber

The ability to schedule rides is relatively new to Uber. The first generation of the app didn’t include this feature but further releases introduced Schedule Rides that allow you to book in advance. If you have a function, appointment, trip to the airport or something else that you know the exact time you’ll need a ride, you can schedule it in advance from within the Uber app.

pre plan uber trip

Schedule an Uber in advance

Schedule Rides isn’t available universally but it is available in most US cities right now. It isn’t the perfect service for reasons I’ll cover in a minute but if you live in a city with lots of Uber drivers it is a valuable additional feature to use.

Here’s how to schedule a ride:

  • Open the Uber app and set a destination.
  • Select your service type and select the clock icon next to Request Vehicle.
  • Set the date and time from the calendar popup.
  • Set your pickup point as normal.
  • Select Schedule and then Done.

The process isn’t much different from requesting a normal ride. You set your destination, choose a car or ride type and rather than moving straight into the pickup, you set the time and date instead. Then you set your pickup point, confirm the car or ride type and confirm the ride.

You will see the route map and approximate cost as usual before you hit Schedule. The ride type will also be included in that Schedule button as normal.

Once confirmed, the app will give you a fifteen minute pickup window. Make sure to schedule this into your plans when setting a time. If time is going to be tight, add some extra time when setting your pickup.

Changing a Scheduled Ride

Once you have a Scheduled Ride set up you can cancel or modify it at any time until a driver has accepted the ride. To change your ride, you have to cancel and rebook. There is currently no option to modify the schedule within the existing order. Not on my app anyway.

To change or cancel a Scheduled Ride:

  • Open Uber and select the Settings menu.
  • Select Your Trips from the options and select the Upcoming option.
  • Select Cancel and confirm cancelation.
  • Follow the above process to create a Scheduled Ride with your new details.

Cancelling before a driver has accepted a booking does not incur a fee. Canceling after the driver has accepted the ride will incur the usual fee. Typically, drivers will not accept a Scheduled Ride until the day or within half an hour or so before the ride is due to begin. Cancelling before then will usually be fine. Otherwise the fee is around $5.

pre plan uber trip

Uber Scheduled Rides

In most situations, Scheduled Rides work perfectly well. They are a cheaper alternative to hiring a town car for a function, important meeting or trip to the airport but won’t be ideal in every situation.

Uber recommends not using Scheduled Rides for airport pickups. They work fine for getting you to the airport but the company says a number Uber drivers will work within a short range of most airports and it’s easier to just request a ride when you land and clear security. Flight delays are all too common so they recommend against a Scheduled Ride there.

A key shortcoming of Scheduled Rides is that Uber won’t actually tell you if there isn’t a driver available until you are within or at the end of your pickup window. This is less than ideal and can leave you hanging when you need it least. While I don’t see how they could do this differently, it does leave you exposed or potentially late for your event.

Users in less built up areas may also have trouble with Scheduled Rides. If a driver isn’t available at the time, you’re not going to know until that time. Practically, that’s no different than booking a ride and no driver picking it up but if you’re depending on that ride, you’re left hanging.

Scheduled Rides is a very neat feature that works as well as the rest of Uber. It helps take a weight off your mind knowing transport should be ready to take you where you need to go. If the standard service works in your area, Scheduled Rides should too.

Have you used Scheduled Rides? Did it work? Would you use it again? Tell us about your experiences below.

How to Book a Group Ride Using the Uber App

  • Book a group ride with up to three friends on Uber to save money and split the fare. All passengers must travel to the same destination.
  • To book a group ride, open the Uber app, go to Services tab, select Group Ride, add pickup and drop-off locations, invite friends, and confirm the route.
  • As the organizer of the group ride, you have control over the route, passengers, and vehicle type. Group rides are cost-effective and help reduce roadway congestion.

While many people know Uber as a common ride-hailing service for taking rides alone, did you know that you can also use Uber to book a group ride with up to three of your friends?

It's true; you can use Uber as a carpooling service and then split the fare with other passengers. That said, Uber's group rides only work if you and all the other passengers plan to travel to the same destination. You can learn all about this feature below.

How to Book a Group Trip With Uber

There are many scenarios where a group trip can be beneficial. Perhaps you want to save some money on gas, arrange a group shopping trip with friends, or arrive at a work event together with your colleagues. Whatever the situation may be, read on to find out how to book a group ride using the Uber app.

  • Open the Uber app on your smartphone and go to the Services tab from the bottom menu.
  • Select Group Ride and tap Get Started on the following screen.
  • First, you have to add your pickup location. You can do so by setting the location on the map or using your current location or Saved Places .
  • Next, add the final destination or drop-off location.
  • Lastly, tap Invite People to get a link you can share with your friends to join the group ride. Remember that you should only invite a maximum of three other people.
  • Make sure each passenger adds their pickup location or address to the route.
  • Once everyone has joined the group ride, you and the other passengers will be able to see an overview of the route.
  • From there, tap Confirm Route to see the map, verify the overall route, and view Uber's different ride types and options .

It's important to note that the person who organized the group trip has the authority to adjust the group ride in a number of ways that other passengers can't.

For instance, if you're the organizer, you can customize the entire route order, add and remove passengers from the trip, and change their pickup locations. Other passengers will only have an overview of the group ride and the ability to remove themselves. Furthermore, as the group ride organizer, you get to decide on the vehicle type and initiate the trip in the Uber app.

The Benefits of Uber Group Rides

Uber's group rides have several impressive benefits. For one, traveling in a group means you can save money by sharing the fare, making it the more affordable option. Moreover, it is economical compared to taking your own vehicle and driving yourself.

Booking an Uber group ride is also the greener option. You're effectively reducing vehicles on the road, which can help in decreasing roadway congestion and improving traffic flow.

Additionally, Uber is one of the best apps for a stress-free vacation . Essentially, you can use Uber's group trips to ride with and meet up with local friends in the area instead of traveling alone.

Travel With Friends Using the Uber App

Because of the Uber app and its impressive features, it's now easier than ever to head to a shared destination with a group of friends and arrive together. And that means saving time and money, too.

But apart from the obvious financial benefits, booking an Uber group ride is sure to make your life so much easier and more convenient. All it takes is a few simple steps, and you'll be amazed at how simple it is to book a group ride.

The Guru Take

Scheduling a *future* ride with multiple stops is not supported currently in the app. you can request the driver during the ride..

As you may already have seen in your Uber app, it is currently not possible to schedule a future ride with multiple destinations.  (For those of you who are new to Uber, both features are available, but you cannot do them both at the same time.)

What you can do is to simply schedule a ride from the starting location to the *final destination* and ask the driver or use the app during the trip to add additional stops.
