Hoi An city tour: Cam Pho, Chua Cau, Quan Thang ancient house, Phuc Kien assembly hall, Tra Que village

At 9:00 AM, you will be picked up from your hotel for an excursion to Hoi An, was once a prominent Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, and its Old Town remains remarkably preserved. The town's historic buildings, religious sites, daily commerce, and the authentic lifestyle of its locals vividly display the cultural exchanges that have enriched its heritage over the centuries.

Our first stop is Cam Pho, one of the oldest communal houses in Hoi An. Constructed in the shape of a Chinese character symbolizing a place for worship and trade, it served as a hub for cultural exchanges between the local community and Chinese and Japanese traders.

Take a leisurely stroll to Hoi An's famous landmark, the Chua Cau, or Japanese Covered Bridge. Built in the 17th century, it was strategically constructed to connect the Japanese quarter with the Chinese neighborhoods. The bridge's unique architectural style has been meticulously maintained for more than four centuries, symbolizing Hoi An's rich cultural interchange and historical importance.

Continue your stroll through the town, immersing yourself in local life, and make a stop at Quan Thang ancient house. Renowned as one of the most authentic old houses in Hoi An, it showcases vibrant architecture and sculptures crafted by artisans from the renowned Kim Bong carpentry village in a traditional Oriental style. The house provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of a Hoi An family.

Enrich your tour by visiting a gathering place for residents, traders, and visitors from Fujian, China called Phuc Kien, or Fujian Assembly Hall since the 17th century. It later transformed into a religious site honoring Thien Hau. Step inside and be captivated by the vibrant courtyard fountains, the intricately decorated entry gates, and the awe-inspiring carved dragons in the main hall. It's a true immersion into Hoi An's rich history and cultural blend.

Spend the afternoon exploring Tra Que, a charming farming village known for its fragrant herbs. Here, you'll find unique mint and basil varieties boasting a more intense flavor and smaller leaves. Immerse yourself in the village's history through a captivating introduction, and learn about their traditional methods of vegetable cultivation. Discover how these very vegetables play a role in Vietnamese medicine! This is also your chance to meet the friendly locals and capture some memorable photos with them.

In the late afternoon, head back to Hoi An town. The rest of the evening is yours to explore at your leisure.

Boat trip on Huong river, Minh Mang's tomb, Thuy Bieu village, Thien Mu pagoda After leaving your hotel, head to the awe-inspiring tomb of Emperor Minh Mang. This masterpiece is a harmonious blend of nature and imperial religious structures. Though planned during Minh Mang's reign (1820-1840), the actual construction was overseen by his successor, Thieu Tri, and involved a staggering ten thousand workers and artisans.

We'll embark on our next adventure by boating for a scenic cruise down the Huong River, also known as the Perfume River and taking in the picturesque landscapes on both sides of the river. Our voyage will lead us to Thuy Bieu - world of grapefruit trees. Let’s take a leisurely bike ride beneath their shade, inhaling the delightful citrusy fragrance. Admire the village's peaceful atmosphere and picturesque scenes of harvested straw. Afterwards, we'll visit a temple honoring the village protector and explore a centuries-old traditional garden house. This presents a fantastic opportunity to capture memorable photos and engage with villagers tending to the gardens and vegetable fields—a highlight not to be missed.

Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Central Vietnam is full of memorable destinations, from the beautiful beaches and fishing villages on the South Central Coast to the coffee plantations and stunning scenery of the Central Highlands. It also has a rich culture to explore, with more ethnic minorities in the area than any other part of Vietnam and plenty of ancient historical sites dotting the landscape.

Are you looking to explore Central Vietnam, but not sure where to start? Look no further! In this guide, we’ll show you seven must-visit destinations in the region. To make planning your trip easier, we’ve divided the destinations into areas, so you can map out your itinerary from north to south. Whether you’re a history buff or a nature lover, Central Vietnam has something for everyone.

Table of Contents

Northern central coast.

The Northern Central Coast of Vietnam is a treasure trove of history. Starting with artifacts and relevant sites from the Vietnam War and stretching all the way back to the ancient history you’ll find in the largest cave in the world.

1. Hue: The Citadel & Perfume River

central vietnam

Hue used to be the capital of Vietnam during the days of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Because of that, the Hue Citadel is one of Vietnam’s most majestic examples of pre-colonial architecture. The Citadel of the Ancient City is usually peaceful and serene. Still, the area around the imperial city is generally alive with historical and cultural experiences, from traditional music shows to museums. If you want to avoid the rainy season and try to catch some festivals in Hue, you can check out  the best time to visit Hue here.

The area of Hue surrounding Central City is known for its romantic landscapes. The most famous is the Perfume River, which winds directly through the city and gets its name from the aromatic flowers from the orchards upstream that fall into the river during the autumn months. The Perfume River has great spiritual, cultural, and historical significance for the city, and a cruise on the Perfume River is the most scenic way to enjoy the vistas of romantic Hue. After a cruise down the Perfume River, head to the nearby Thien Mu Pagoda to enjoy the sunset. Or drive over the Hai Van Pass to Lang Co Beach.

Explore Hue: Discover top attractions, local cuisine, tours, and the best places to stay.

2. Quang Binh Province: Phong Nha and Dong Hoi

central vietnam

The main attraction of Quang Binh province in Central Vietnam is Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The UNESCO Heritage Site is home to the world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave. Son Doong is part of a massive cave system that includes Paradise Cave, also known as Thien Duong Cave. Phong Nha-Ke Bang also contains unique karst landscapes, scenic waterways, and incredible biodiversity.

The most incredible experience in Phong Nha is exploring its caves, set amidst lush jungles and fresh rivers. For those keen on delving into this adventurer’s paradise and learning more about the caves and tours, check out  ‘Phong Nha Cave Tours: Explore Central Vietnam’s UNESCO Wonders.’ . But beyond the caves, there’s an untouched, rural beauty to be discovered in Phong Nha.

Dong Hoi is a small city beside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park with an airport and train station that connects to other major cities in Vietnam. It’s certainly not a metropolis, but its small size only adds to its quaint charm. Dong Hoi is an ideal stopover and resting place before conquering trekking and caving expeditions in the nearby national park. PRO TIP:  If you’re looking for some beautiful hidden gems in the North Central Coast, head up to the mountains, rivers, and long coastline of Thanh Hoa Province to check out Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Cua Lo Beach, and Sam Son Beach.

Central Coast

The Central Coastal region of Vietnam may be the most popular part of the country for those trying to escape the intensity of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City because they are two of the top destinations in Vietnam.

central vietnam

Da Nang, the unofficial capital city of Central Vietnam, merges natural beauty with its cityscape in a way few other cities in the world do. The population of Da Nang City is over 1.1 million, but the town itself is built around beautiful beaches and forests. For example, My Khe Beach, often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is located beside one of the city’s main strips of road.

tours in da nang5 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Even though it’s a naturally beautiful city, Da Nang visitors can still find a strong dose of that excitement they can see in big cities. For example,  Da Nang’s nightlife scene  is booming. Check out some  popular tours in Da Nang  and the surrounding area.

The area around Da Nang is amazingly beautiful, too. For instance, the Marble Mountains, located about 45 minutes drive from Da Nang, are one of Central Vietnam’s greatest natural wonders and overlook Non Nuoc beach, a serene getaway for those looking for some sand and sea.

tours in da nang3 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

And then there’s Hai Van Pass, a world-famous mountain pass with perhaps one of Southeast Asia’s best panoramic views that displays Central Vietnam’s lush beauty. Hai Van is partly in Da Nang and partly in Hue.

Explore Da Nang: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

4. Hoi An Ancient Town – UNESCO World Heritage Site

what to buy in hoi an2 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

It’s not a controversial statement to say that Hoi An is one of the most beautiful towns in Asia, an idea reinforced by UNESCO’s decision to make it a World Heritage site in 1999. Situated in Quang Nam province, Da Nang’s neighbor.

The old town feels quaint and buzzing with energy, largely thanks to its well-preserved historical architecture that mixes indigenous and foreign influences, diverse cultural influences, and its unique heritage. An evening walk along the Thu Bon River in the center of the ancient town, while colored lanterns line both banks, is one of the quintessential Vietnamese activities you’ll find.

Hoi An is also a hub for upscale shopping, cultural experiences like pottery-making, finding unique street food, and more. There are many fascinating day trips from Hanoi, like the My Son Sanctuary, another World Heritage Site, or Cua Dai Beach, a seaside sanctuary just minutes from Hoi An known for its soft sand and peaceful atmosphere. Really, this town has everything you could want as a traveler in Vietnam. Experience it all with the  Hoi An Sunset Tour  and more popular  Hoi An activities .

Pro Tip:  Alongside Cua Dai Beach’s soft sands and clear waters, Hoi An boasts other stunning beaches. An Bang Beach is known for its calm vibe and beachside cafes, while Ha My Beach offers secluded serenity. The Cham Islands are perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts, and Bai Rang Beach presents a rustic charm. For sunsets and seafood, Tan Thanh Beach is a must-visit. Each beach around Hoi An enhances its appeal as a destination of natural beauty and cultural richness.

Southern Central Coast

As you travel further south down the coast of Vietnam, you’ll encounter some beautiful beach towns.

5. Nha Trang Beach –  Khanh Hoa Province

best restaurants nha trang vietnam

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s premier beach city. It brings together the laid-back and traditionally more liberal culture of Southern Vietnam with the more conservative culture of Central Vietnam. It’s also great for sun-kissed days, snorkeling, diving, and other watersports. Nha Trang Beach, located at the center of the city, is probably the epicenter for the endless amount of aquatically-based attractions in the city, such as:

  • VinWonders, a huge waterpark.
  • Multiple aquariums, the most popular of which is Vinpearl Aquarium.
  • Hon Mun Marine Protected Area.
  • Thap Ba Hotsprings.
  • Local fishing villages.

Nha Trang is also known for having some of Vietnam’s tastiest seafood. For an optimal experience, look up some of  the best restaurants in Nha Trang with a sea view here.

Discover Nha Trang: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

6. Quy Nhon Beachside City

Kho island Quy Nhon. Photo by VIA Ambassador Le Van Anh Tai - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Quy Nhon is a peaceful getaway for those who want to soak up as much relaxation vibes as possible, as it’s not a bustling tourist destination like Nha Trang. The town’s architectural style is traditional Vietnamese through and through, and the locals tend to exude an atmosphere of Southern hospitality that most travelers love. The town’s biggest assets, though, are its beautiful beaches. Ky Co Beach, Bai Xep Beach, and Quy Hoa Beach are a few of the most popular, boasting pristine sands and crystal-clear water.

Discover Quy Nhon: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

PRO TIP:  After Quy Nhon, head south to Phu Yen, where you can explore hidden gem attractions like Ghenh Da Dia, a stretch of basalt columns resembling stacked plates along the coastline. With its tranquil beaches and charming rural areas, this province offers a refreshing retreat for travelers seeking a serene and authentic Vietnamese experience.

The Central Highlands

The Highlands lie on the inland side of the Annamite Mountains, so they’re an opportunity for travelers to trade in the ocean breezes of the coastal regions for some mountain air.

The Highlands are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Central Vietnam due to the rolling hills that characterize the area. The extreme ethnic diversity of the region, fronted by the hill tribes dotting the countryside, also helps give it a rugged feel that the parts of Vietnam that are closer to sea level do not offer. The Highlands also have a pleasantly cool climate for much of the year that is more similar to what travelers might expect from a visit to the Swiss Alps than what they usually get in tropical Vietnam.

Da Quy flowers season in Da Lat. Photos by Sam Sam - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Da Lat is the only big city in Central Vietnam’s Highlands. Even though the population is only 425,000, the city gets around 7 million tourists most years.

It’s easy to see why, too: it’s got the same cool climate as the rest of the Highlands, beautiful vistas, natural beauty nestled right into the city, and some of the most flavorful yet distinct cuisine in any part of Vietnam.  Check out this article to discover the must-try local dishes in Dalat before you visit.

Da Lat offers many activities for visitors to indulge in. You could sip coffee while enjoying the stunning natural beauty, kayaking or trekking in the mountains, visit waterfalls and pagodas, or even experience glamping.

The city also boasts several luxurious activity centers like golf courses, shopping malls, and well-manicured gardens and parks.

Discover Dalat: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

Hidden Gems in Central Vietnam

Besides the must-visit destinations mentioned here, there’s a lot to explore in Central Vietnam. For those who have time, renting a mountain bike or a motorbike and wandering around the highways and byways of Quang Nam Province, Khanh Hoa Province, Phu Yen Province, and Thanh Hoa Province is an amazing way to experience what authentic Central Vietnam is really about. And who knows, you may stumble upon some romantic scenery or hidden gems that make your experience in Central Vietnam even more memorable.

Central Vietnam is Waiting

Central Vietnam beautifully merges ancient cities, stunning coastlines, and the lush highlands, offering a perfect mix of nature, history, and culture. Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Image may contain Helmet Person Moped Motor Scooter Motorcycle Transportation Vehicle Clothing Footwear and Shoe

For so many, Siem Reap, Cambodia, is synonymous with its famed UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat , one of Southeast Asia’s most significant archaeological grounds. But beyond these iconic ruins is a city brimming with riverside cafés, festive bar scenes, cultural experiences, and French-style colonial streets. Siem Reap is also a culinary hotspot, boasting everything from expertly crafted street food to contemporary cuisine, with several restaurants earning spots on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list . And outside the urban hustle lies exciting cultural experiences in the province’s rural villages and countryside.

There is also growing accessibility to the region thanks to a new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI), which opened last October. The gateway is also launching a streamlined e-arrival system this year, beginning on September 1. As a result, the number of direct flights into SAI is increasing; among them are direct connections to Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and more. The Cambodian government is also making a considerable tourism push by enhancing flight connectivity, improving border services, expanding border pass availability, and exploring opportunities to financially support local tourism ventures. Here is the best of Siem Reap: how to get there, what to do and eat, and where to stay.

Getting to Siem Reap and navigating the city

The Siem Reap-Angkor Airport is about 30 miles from central Krong Siem Reap; a 60- to 90-minute drive. Taking a taxi is the best option, and there’s a transportation desk on the airport’s ground floor where you can book an official airport shuttle bus ($8) or a taxi ($35). Krong Siem Reap is walkable and accessible by bike.

As far as currency goes, US dollars are accepted at many places , alongside the national currency, the Cambodian riel. Remember to prepare smaller bills for tuk-tuk rides and bike rentals. Otherwise, you’ll receive your change in riel, which is not available outside of Cambodia. Motorcycle taxis are another option, costing just a few bucks within the city; just make sure to negotiate your rate beforehand. For exploration into the countryside and rural Siem Reap, tuk-tuks are the best option and can seat up to four people. Expect to pay about $40 for a day trip.

The lesser-known temple of Koh Her became a UNESCO-designated heritage site in late 2023.

Best things to do in Siem Reap, beyond Angkor Wat

You can spend the first day exploring several sites, such as the King of Cambodia’s Royal Residence to Wat Preah Prom Rath , the city’s largest pagoda. From there, explore vendor-packed Psar Chas, the famed market in the Old French Quarter along the Siem Reap River, for traditional handicrafts, drinks, fresh produce, and skittering fresh fish. Stop by the nearby Made in Cambodia Market , where you can shop for jewelry, artwork, and pottery from local artisans. Visitors heading to Angkor Wat—or those who have already been—should also stop by the lesser-known temple of Koh Her , which became a UNESCO-designated heritage site in late 2023.

That said, make sure to have plenty of time to explore Siem Reap beyond the ruins, venturing into rural areas like the countryside village Preah Dak to taste the handmade noodles used in num banh chok, a traditional breakfast dish with coconut-based fish sauce. Watch villagers team up to operate the car-sized, leg-powered mortar and pestle while mixing the softened rice dough while sweeping their hands under the perilously stomping wooden stake of the wooden contraption. Modern machinery can make these handmade noodles, and these manpower-heavy and time-intensive (and tastier) handmade noodles are a dying tradition. Visitors can support the preservation of the dish on a tour to watch and engage in the entire noodle-making process, and partake in a homestyle Cambodian meal afterward.

Head to Wat Arang Pagoda , just south of the city, for a Buddhist temple blessing. The traditional water benediction and chanting ceremony with a Buddhist monk culminates in a watery shower that embodies ideals like as peace, serenity, and purity. The one-hour ceremony includes two blessing options: a mere sprinkling of water, or an experience where your entire body is doused. Both rituals end with a red string tied around your wrist as a memorialization of the moment.

For traditional crafts, join a class to hand-make Khmer ceramic bowls on the potter wheel at Khmer Ceramics and Fine Arts Centre . Learn to carve Cambodian kbach (traditional ornamental motifs used in Khmer art and architecture) and leave with souvenirs to take home. Afterward, explore the handmade Cambodian glassware-filled gift shop, much of it fired in the on-site wood kiln that reaches temperatures up to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. This social enterprise seeks to reclaim Cambodia’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy; much of which was lost during the Khmer Rouge regime.

Sample Cambodian rice wine, called sraa at the workshop of Sombai , a popular brand of infused rice wines. Learn how it's made in a cocktail class and try various flavors of the vigorous alcohol. A tour of the infusion room showcases spirits being infused with ingredients like as badian (star anise), galangal, and tamarind. Tasting flavors include coconut and pineapple-infused sraa , like a Cambodian pina colada; and a combo of ginger and green chili, the spiciest flavor.

Don’t miss the floating villages of Kampong Phluk in rural Siem Reap. Located inside Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s largest lake , you’ll find timber houses built on about 26-foot-high stilts. Take a boat tour to see the houses up close with Vietnamese-Cambodian residents paddling by. Make sure to visit with a local tour company like Triple A Cambodia to avoid rips-offs and aggressive vendors.

As far as culinary experiences go, Siem Reap offers some of Asia's best restaurants and delicious homemade cooking with locals.

Where to eat in Siem Reap

Cambodian food is finally getting worldwide recognition, and Siem Reap is a great place to sample its flavors. French chef Joannès Rivière’s Cuisine Wat Damnak has led the local movement of modern Cambodian cuisine since opening in 2011. As the first Cambodian titleholder on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list , his dishes marry French techniques with traditional Khmer cuisine. Housed in a traditional wooden house, the restaurant’s two seasonal tasting menus (one plant-based) feature regional Cambodian flavors sourced mostly from local farms and purveyors. Some dishes that have appeared on the rotating menus include a countryside cuisine-inspired sour yellow curry with rice paddy crab or Cambodian giant eggplant jungle curry. Wash it all down with locally brewed beer.

The best things to do in Porto

Another one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is The Sugar Palm by Cambodian-New Zealander Kethana Dunnet. She’s preserving Khmer cooking methods of her mother and grandmother with dishes meant to be eaten family style. At this lofty restaurant done up in teak wood, order the amok trei (fish amok), which is well worth the 40-minute wait; pomelo salad with pork, shrimp, mint, and toasted coconut; and prahok kh'tih (minced pork mixed with salted and fermented fish paste).

Explore Siem Reap on a tuk-tuk food tour with a local guide who shares with travelers the stories about the Khmer Rouge regime and its effect on this region’s herb-topped dishes—all while sampling ancient dishes from the Angkor era. Lost Plate Foods offers several tours in Siem Reap, but pick the one takes you to the only restaurant serving cuisine by the Kula people , an ethnic minority group in northwest Cambodia; the tour includes a meal at home with a local family, and ends with banana leaf salad and classic curry at a local restaurant.

The Park Hyatt Siem Reap is an ideal base from which you can explore the city on foot.

Where to stay in Siem Reap

Just a ten-minute drive from Angkor Wat, the Park Hyatt Siem Reap is an ideal base from which you can explore the city on foot. This Art Deco and Khmer-influenced hotel, designed by renowned hotelier Bill Bensley , provides cultural guest experiences for guests: In the mornings, local artisans set up in the foyer with handicraft classes, and a local coconut vendor slices fresh coconuts to drink for breakfast. For dinner, set menus of Cambodian food include a traditional Apsara dance performance. The property is within walking distance of many local shops and cafes, including Sivlean Mart , a convenience store filled with the owner’s family of 17 tame and luxuriously fluffy Persian cats. She doesn’t mind if you come in to take photos and pet the friendly, tame cats. Just make sure to buy something from her store.

For a boutique experience, stay at the Angkor Village Hotel , a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. This 43-room property is family-owned and built in the Khmer style with tropical gardens throughout. Located downtown, take a ten-minute tuk-tuk ride to Pub Street , a popular spot overflowing with bars and restaurants.
