Look out for Singapore’s first food truck: The Travelling C.O.W

  • By SG Magazine
  • Dec 6, 2012

I-S   lamented about the non-existence of food trucks in Singapore earlier this year. Enter the city’s first food truck to the rescue: The Travelling C.O.W .

While it’s early days yet — after all, they only got their mobile wagon license approved in the middle of November — founder Karen Cheng is optimistic and excited about their “gourmet mobile food van”.

“We’ve traveled around quite a bit and seen food trucks around  the world , but not here in Singapore. So we thought this would be something interesting and different we could do.  Our thing is gourmet bistro fare on the go, comfort food that speaks to people. B ut it’s not just about the food, i t’s also a social thing that’s about a  different  lifestyle and having fun,” says  Cheng.

The Travelling C.O.W makes an appearance this Saturday, December 8, from 7:30-10:30pm at specialist cocktail bar Néktar’s second anniversary party . They’ll be serving up  bites such as mac & cheese, mini crab cakes with wasabi mayo, beef bourguignon with mash, and spicy Thai basil chicken in a bun, so catch them while you can.

If you’re keen to find out more about them and where they’ll be popping up next, be sure to check out  their Facebook page .

🙌🙋 3 handsto travelling cow's ramen burger.

didn't think it was that fantastic. the ramen were too hard. the teriyaki chicken was quite tender and succulent though. anyone had it before. what's your thoughts?

Beef bulgogi. Yummy! Hope to be back to try the other fillings.

Surprised to find something deliciously hip around the area.

I was utterly delighted when I saw that they had the ramen burger on the menu as my friends told me they'd stopped selling that since the end of January. Two "buns" made of fried ramen, crispy on the surface but soft within. Generous serving of bulgogi, a slice of lettuce and a slice of tomato, voila your ramen burger is formed. While decent, I was underwhelmed by the ramen burger, which might have been in case of having way high expectations for something sounding so very awesome. Also, would have preffered it if my food was hotter, especially since I saw that it was prepared on the spot for me. Nonetheless, I think this is still worth a try for an interesting gastronomic experience. Currently located at The Promontory for the Extreme Sailing event, visit The Travelling C.O.W before it moves on to greener pastures, literally. Visit The Promontory and you will get it. Also, the ramen burger looks like an extension of my hand 😂

$4! Rich chocolatey goodness

$9. Meaty juicy tasty, quite interesting! Tastes pretty good although I bought it an hour ago - some parts of the ramen are still crispy!

𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖? 💡 The first food truck dates back as early as 1872, when a man named Walter Scott from Rhode Island, USA cut up windows from his covered wagon and set it up in front of a newspaper stand to sell coffee and pie. Over the next several decades, more versions of this wagon emerged, from sausage carts to wiener mobiles to ice cream trucks. Fast forward to 2008, during the American economic recession, food trucks grew more in popularity both because they were cheaper to operate and offered something new to the palate. 𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 The idea behind our food truck first came about when our founder had a realisation — that food trucks are present and thriving all over the world, except in Singapore. Thus, in late 2012, she established the first ever food truck in the country, serving gourmet bistro fare to people of all walks of life. Since then, we have not just become known for our comfort food that speaks to people, but also the different lifestyle and fun concept that we cater to our diners. Trufflelicious Review: Food Truck Serving Cheesy Truffle Dishes In City Hall

Trufflelicious in funan serving truffle dishes.

Trufflelicious - Flatlay

The show Chef on Netflix left me dreaming for a chance to eat from food trucks. I’m amazed at how quickly dishes are pushed out from these trucks, without compromising on taste and quality. This dream is made a reality with The Travelling C.O.W.’s latest concept, Trufflelicious .

Trufflelicious - Food truck

You don’t have to worry about chasing after Trufflelicious, as this Volkswagen is permanently parked in Funan. As food trucks are not a common sight in Singapore, passersby were quick to snap a photo.

Food at Trufflelicious

Trufflelicious - Truffle sukiyaki beef don

What else can you expect from Trufflelicious besides truffles? Dining here is straightforward as their short menu offers dishes that incorporate fresh truffles. With a bottle of water in hand, I was ready for a rich and heavy meal. I started with the Truffle Sukiyaki Beef Don ($12) .

21 Funan Food Places To Visit Including Wagyu Steak From $18.90+, Yuzu Ramen And More

The staff was quick in assembling this rice bowl. The final touch was freshly grated black truffles that peppered the dish.

Trufflelicious - Beef don

My hopes were high as a rich, earthy aroma wafted from the truffles. But after tucking into this dish, it seemed that the only truffle element in this dish were the slivers of truffles. The generous portions of beef slices were well marinated in a classic sweet sukiyaki sauce, but lacked a pungent truffle flavour.

Trufflelicious - Beef

Mixing in the onsen egg and grated truffle helped to elevate the fragrance of this dish. The runny egg added a creamy texture to the rice bowl, while the flakes of black truffle provided a savoury balance to the sweet-tasting beef.

Trufflelicious - Truffle grilled cheese sandwich

A must-have for any cheese lover is their Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($12) . Trufflelicious knows the way to both our hearts and stomachs, as this sandwich comes with a side of nacho and cheese.

Trufflelicious - Cheese pull

There is something gratifying about getting a cheese pull from a grilled cheese sandwich . What’s even better is the earthy scent of truffle emanating from this dish.

Trufflelicious - Grilled cheese

There is some weight to this sandwich, as I had to hold it with both hands. Packing a liberal amount of cheese, the sandwich is held together by thick slices of white bread.

Trufflelicious - Cheese

The sandwich was grilled beautifully, as the bread was crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The truffle was freshly grated onto the cheese, leaving some parts of the sandwich without a distinct truffle aroma. Even so, the truffle shavings did elevate the savouriness of this dish. You might want to split this sinful sandwich with a friend as it can get jelak after a few bites.

Trufflelicious - Mac and cheese balls

Mac & cheese balls aren’t common in Singapore, so I was intrigued by Trufflelicious’ Truffle Mac & Cheese Balls ($10) . These balls were deep-fried upon order to ensure maximum crispiness, and topped off with truffle shavings.

Trufflelicious - Mac and cheese

Fried to golden brown, the Mac & Cheese Balls were glistening in all of their oily glory. The batter was crunchy, while the filling was warm and cheesy.

Trufflelicious - Mac and cheese filling

The filling tasted like a typical mac & cheese, with a subtle truffle flavour coming from the truffle shavings.

Ambience at Trufflelicious

Trufflelicious - Ambience

Trufflelicious catches passersby’s attention with their Volkswagen setup. Seating is rather limited as they share the space with Milksha . They have counter seats overlooking Funan’s atrium that make a great spot for people watching.

The verdict

Trufflelicious - Verdict

With such a sensational name, I was expecting truffle-infused dishes with bold earthy flavours. But the subtle musky notes from the truffle shavings left me slightly disappointed. Despite this mismatch in expectations, Trufflelicious is still value for money. You can’t complain much with their use of fresh truffles and nett prices.

I've met The Travelling C.O.W. (Chef On Wheels) on several occasions, they seem to like popping up at the more artsy events that I attend - think Singapore Night Festival, Art After Dark @ Gillman Barracks etc. While I may have brushed past them at other events, it was finally at Gillman that I decided to take the plunge into my first affair with a food truck. I am wildly fascinated with food trucks and wish there were more of such in Singapore - unfortunately I guess there are permit and license issues aplenty and thus, we do not get to have food zooming around in trucks and straight to our (actually, mostly my) tummy! But then again, we have food at every MRT station, I guess food trucks wouldn't go well after the initial novel period for Singaporeans - we're an unfaithful bunch when it comes to food, cause there's too many things in Singapore to fall in love with already. My first brush with C.O.W. was a hit and a miss - mostly a hit though, but unfortunately Cupid didn't strike while the iron was hot as my Truffle Mac & Cheese Balls came half cold. I was yearning to bite down into an oozy, warm ball of yellow, cheesy goodness because the cup in my hand that held these scared balls was warm, hot even, to touch. But alas, my first bite was of cold, stale batter and a slight whiff of truffle on cold, stuck together pasta. The truffle monster in me roared as I was expecting a little more - its craving was not satisfied. The lady who handed my eager, excited being the food ask 'So how is it?' and in classic polite Singaporean-style, I told her it was yummy with a twinkle in my eyes. I had taken a bite and didn't want to send the food back to the kitchen. It was a rough night for them as the queues for food were long and I didn't want to be a mean person holding the line up. I had another two more balls of the same quality, and my last few balls at the bottom of the cup were slightly warmer, but still had the same stuck together, not really truffle-oil infused disappointment. The partner-in-crime (who had begrudgingly trudged his way to this godforsaken Gillman Barracks because he doesn't understand art but, #boyfduties) was rewarded for his valiant effort to pretend to understand all the abstract notions of art with an extremely yummy tasting Chilli Crab Pasta. At first look, there's nothing to fall in love with, it was a mess of sauce splayed over pasta - but the moment you get a whiff of it ... you see a bit of Singaporean heaven. I stole about 1/4 of the pasta that was supposed to be his dinner because it was so so yummy! The chilli crab sauce while not a vicious as the actual dish was seasoned and tasted perfectly like the real thing - put that with pasta, and I'm quite sold. Anyone who can cook half decent pasta in a truck deserves a pat on the back - and the sauce totally just makes you forget that the pasta ain't al dente. Overall, I came out of the experience a bit wary about loving it too much because of the Truffle Mac & Cheese Balls, but if their usual other dishes (like the Ramen Burger) that I want to try are more towards Chilli Crab Pasta standards, I think I'll become a loyal (event) patron of the Travelling C.O.W.

If it's not the food craze that drove New Yorkers insane, and potentially Singaporeans. The Travelling C.O.W has come up with their version of the Ramen Burger, which consists of two golden crisp ramen patties and filled with some succulent meats, paired with a secret dressing. The Bulgogi Beef burger is a crowd pleaser, a mild sweet juicy burger. I liked the Spicy BBQ Chicken, which is more savory than spicy. The sauce provided the right amount of flavors for the otherwise bland noodle patty. More could be done to the consistency of the fried noodles, but when golden brown, it goes great with the saucy gravy. Skip the Mushroom Fricasse, instant mushroom noodles would have tasted better. Burgers are going for about $9. Be ready for a mess when eating the burger.
