Island hoppers and Lake Erie lovers will find lots to love here as the names of the rooms themselves suggest: There’s the Kelleys Island, Johnson’s Island, Bay Point and Lakeside. (A newer property, the Lake Erie Loft, is across the street.) The rooms are on the second and third floor of the former Marblehead Schoolhouse Building, and the winery is on the first floor. “Every guest gets a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival,” says owner Chris Redfern. “When you make reservations, we ask what kind you like. And for kids, there’s Marblehead Soda, our own label.” Rooms have upscale furnishings like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, full kitchens and fireplaces. Winery happenings include trivia nights, live music and Friday-night flights with the winery’s sommelier. There is also an outdoor patio that is an ideal spot to enjoy a glass or two. Once the winery closes, overnight guests have use of the patio, the outdoor grill and the fire pit that can be stocked for lighting upon request. “You have the place to yourself, and no one is going to shoo you away,” says Redfern. “There’s a light breeze. We’re only one block from Lake Erie.” Speaking of one block from Lake Erie, guests can grab a bike from the inn and pedal on over or anywhere else they’d like to go, including the historic Marblehead Lighthouse. “It’s just like home. If you want to use a bike, use a bike,” Redfern says. “Just take one and go. If it breaks down, call us, and we’ll come pick you up.”  111 W. Main St., Marblehead 43440, 419/967-5344,  redferninn.com

Geneva on the Lake

Ohio Wine Country

Take a sip of our winemaking heritage, enjoy the “grape”-est part of geneva-on-the-lake.

With over 30 area wineries in and around Geneva-on-the-Lake, there are so many ways to wine! When you visit our wineries, you’re not only sipping an amazing glass of vino, but you’re also experiencing the rich history and heritage that our area is known for. Nestled along the southern shore of Lake Erie, our cooler climate creates the perfect environment for quality wines ranging from very dry to semi-sweet varieties. This vibrant and expanding vineyard region is responsible for over 50% of the grapes grown in the state of Ohio. The Grand River Valley AVA is no longer a place where the native Concord and Niagara grapes rule. Ohio is cultivating some of the best Pinot, Cabernet, Riesling, and Vidal in the country.

For its Lake Erie Shores & Islands tour, learn about the winemaking process in the cellars of Firelands Winery in Sandusky or try delicious wine pairings at Gideon Owen Wine Co. in Port Clinton. “We spend a lot of time studying the wineries and studying the wine,” says Nina Parson, director of sales and marketing. “We can cultivate a tour that matches your specific needs.” Call for pricing rate, 216-861-7433, companycarlimo.com

Ohio Wine Shuttle by The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake: A convenient shuttle takes your group to three picturesque wineries such as Debonne Vineyards and South River Vineyard. Not only will each stop give you a peek inside each winery, certified wine specialist Lauren Fiala will be onboard for an immersive wine tasting experience along the way. “This is a great tool for people who are learning, as well as the aficionados, because I’m going to tell you some different things about the Ohio wine regions that you might not have known before,” says Fiala. $95 per person, 4888 N.
