Two of Canada’s greatest roots singer-songwriters have finally done what everyone has wanted for years. Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier have released their first album together filled with original songs and rare covers with lush guitars and tight harmonies.

ABOUT GUNNING & CORMIER

Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier are both from Nova Scotia, Canada. They are stellar, multi-award winning, solo musicians in their own right. Both have many awards to their credit, including being nominated for JUNO Awards (Canada’s Grammy). Together, their show is magic. Not just their individual musical skills, but their obvious friendship comes out in their stage banter. Dave, the storyteller, and J.P. the master of the guitar - it will be a rare night to remember for sure.

Gunning & Cormier go back 23 years when Dave had a fiddle player drop out of a show at the last minute. “He hired me for a gig when I was just back from Nashville, nobody knew me here,” says Cormier.

“We were totally blown away by J.P.’s playing,” recalls Gunning. “I remember him saying if you ever do a CD, I want to play on it.” That happened, and much more. They played together and wrote together whenever they could, coming up with songs that graced both their projects, over the years showered with awards and nominations on the East Coast and nationally.

“Dave is such a part of my life,” says Cormier. “Dave is like my family, he’s like a blood relative to me, and he’s always been that way. ” Gunning feels the same way. “Absolutely, we just became fast friends, and we’ve been working together ever since.”

Since they’ve been two of the busiest solo musicians in the country these past two decades, it’s been impossible to schedule time to make a full album and properly tour it. But that all changed three years ago when Cormier moved just down the road from Gunning in Nova Scotia’s Pictou County, and the pair were able to meet often at Gunning’s home studio.

Gunning & Cormier have been playing some select gigs over the past few months, in anticipation of the album’s release. “It seems to be a different kind of response from the audience that I’m not too sure that either of us have experienced be-fore,” says Gunning. “We love singing together, we love playing guitar together, it just works.”

Two is as real as it gets. Two songwriters, interpreters, guitar players, and singers at their peak. It’s the power of the song, the highest quality from the past to the now. It’s two friends, brothers, uncompromising performers, making the album of their lives. There couldn’t be a better time to discover Gunning & Cormier, and the power of Two.

Cormier are releasing their first album together, called Two. Great friends, frequent collaborators, co-writers and touring partners, the pair has been talking about this album since pretty much the day they met. Now it’s here, and it’s everything fans hoped and dreamed it would be. Two is made up of everything the duo excels at. There are new collaborations between the two writers (Brothers, Home To Mary), new arrangements of antique folk numbers (Johnny Armstrong, Katie o’ the Gowrie), and some tasty, surprising covers (Never Picked Cotton, Stompin’ Tom’s Songbird Valley). Every song had to meet their very high, combined standards. “We didn’t take it lightly,” confirms Gunning. “We really put our heart into it.”

Arguably one of the best guitar players in the business today, J.P Cormier has a long list of accolades from all over the world and from performers like Chet Atkins, Marty Stuart, Waylon Jennings and Gordon Lightfoot to name a few.

36 years later after stepping on stage as professional union musician for the first time at the tender age of 13, JP is still going, and frighteningly, still getting better. 16 albums followed the success of Another Morning, winning 12  ECMA’s,  Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award and 5 Music Nova Scotia Awards. Each album is a snapshot of each thing that he can do. There are fiddle albums, Mandolin, Banjo, Guitar, tribute records, songwriting collections, a purely astounding spectrum of talent and musical vision.

With fourteen albums to his credit, there’s no denying Dave Gunning’s impressive body of work. Fortunately, he’s just getting started…

The Nova Scotian folk musician has shared the stage with legends like Ron Hynes, Rita MacNeil, Stuart McLean, and Stompin’ Tom Connors, and has been recognized in his own right as a master of his craft, both as an award-winning singer-songwriter and a captivating performer.

Known for his abilities as a gracious storyteller, Gunning’s knack for connecting with audiences precedes the skills and experience he’s earned on the road—It is, for him, very much a way of life. Gunning shares the same sort of relationship with music as an eagle does with the sky. From a very young age, music has been Gunning’s way of interpreting the world around him, the lens through which he sees it, and the medium by which he engages with his community.

Dave has never needed to look far beyond his Pictou County, Nova Scotia backyard for inspiration. That’s where the characters live. That’s where the stories come from. Often shining a light on the well-deserving underdogs, he’s also never shied away from tougher topics, staying true to the folk music tradition. In recent years, those topics have tended to be more social and environmental in nature - causes that he holds near and dear. Nowhere has that been more evident, or public, than Dave’s strong stance against a local bleached kraft pulp mill - a proven polluter in the community.

Despite delivering some very important messages in his songs, audiences should also be prepared to laugh at a Dave Gunning show. His banter is perfectly timed, self-effacing, and very, very funny. It’s this finely-tuned balance of sincerity and impeccable performance that makes him one of the country’s most engaging entertainers.

Cormier is a gifted multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who has released more than a dozen records including two career retrospectives, and a book of the tunes featured on his guitar album. J.P.’s impressive body of work has earned him a vast and loyal fan base and multiple award nominations and wins, including 14 East Coast Music Awards, Canadian Folk Music Award, five Music Nova Scotia Awards, Juno nominations, commendations from the Governor General of Canada and Premier of Nova Scotia. His 2015 album, The Chance, was nominated for a Juno award in the Traditional Roots Album of the Year category while his 2018 release with Dave Gunning, Gunning & Cormier – Two , won a 2019 East Coast Music Award. A past Artist in Residence (2008), J.P. has performed at Celtic Colours every year since the Festival started in 1997. JP CORMIER At the age of 5, JP began teaching himself to play the guitar. At 9, he won his first guitar competition against 30 other players 4 times his age. By his mid teens, he was playing a variety of stringed instruments, including the fiddle, mandolin and banjo.

He recorded his first album of bluegrass instrumentals at 16, which led to 10 years of living and performing in the US. His time there included many memorable nights at the Grand Ole Opry with artists such as Waylon Jennings, Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Charlie Louvin and Vince Gill.

Since returning to Canada, JP has released over a dozen award-winning albums. His impressive body of work has earned him a loyal fan base and multiple award nominations and wins.

The Nova Scotian folk musician has shared the stage with legends like Ron Hynes, Rita MacNeil, Stuart McLean, and Stompin’ Tom Connors, and has been recognized in his own right as a master of his craft, both as an award-winning singer-songwriter and a captivating performer.

Known for his abilities as a gracious storyteller, Gunning’s knack for connecting with audiences precedes the skills and experience he’s earned on the road—It is, for him, very much a way of life. Gunning shares the same sort of relationship with music as an eagle does with the sky. From a very young age, music has been Gunning’s way of interpreting the world around him, the lens through which he sees it, and the medium by which he engages with his community. 

Terra Spencer Raised on the mud banks of the Avon River, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer was recruited as a backup singer while scooping ice cream at a music festival. She can make you feel knee-to-knee with her in a room of 5 or 500 with her butterscotch vibrato, deft fingerstyle guitar, church bench piano, sly humour, and ‘70s wood-paneled warmth. Her startling knack for telling intimate stories caught the attention of Canadian musical mentors and collaborators including David Francey, Dave Gunning, Quote the Raven, and Matt Andersen.

She has become a sought-after studio musician, co-writer, producer, and workshop facilitator. Terra’s self-produced second album Chasing Rabbits won Music Nova Scotia’s Folk Recording of the Year and received nominations for ECMA Folk Recording of the Year and CFMA Contemporary Singer of the Year. Her song “Feels Like Home” was named the 2021 Blues and Roots Radio International Song of the Year. "Brick and Mortar" won the 2023 International Song Award in the Adult Contemporary Category, and is currently representing Canada as one of seven finalists in the Commonwealth Song Contest.

Following a full-band summer tour celebrating the golden anniversary of the music of 1971, Terra toured across Canada and the UK with Ben Caplan in support of their recent joint album, Old News. She will join folk icon David Francey on tour in 2023 to celebrate his upcoming release. Terra’s new single, Say, is a tender country waltz written and recorded in a little cabin on the water with Don Brownrigg.

ICHIKO AOBA 15th Anniversary Concert

Ichiko Aoba, a musician who captivates music fans around the world, has announced her 15th-anniversary commemorative concert to be held in early 2025! Last weekend, she successfully concluded the world premiere concert "ICHIKO AOBA 'Luminescent Creatures' World Premiere," featuring a band of 10 members and recreating her latest work, 'Luminescent Creatures,' set for release in February next year. She has just started her domestic tour, 'ICHIKO AOBA Japan Tour 2024' which marks her first tour in about five years, ahead of her world tour scheduled for February next year. In January 2025, to celebrate her 15th anniversary since her debut, commemorative concerts will be held in Kyoto and Tokyo! This will be a solo performance summarizing her 15 years of activity. Please look forward to it!
