Common Questions Travelers Asked

How to get to Huangshan?

Flights: Flights are connected between Tunxi Inernational Airport in Huangshan City and major cities in China, e.g, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Guilin. Most visitors choose to fly from Beijing or Shanghai.

Trains: Trains are available between Huangshan and most big cities in China, such as Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Beijing. However, we only recommend you take high-speed trains from Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing, instead of using overnight trains. It is faster and more comfortable.

Buses: Bus connection between Huangshan City and its neighboring cities is convenient. It takes at least 6 hours to Huangshan from Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou while only 3 hours from Hangzhou. If you have to choose bus, it would be good to start from Hangzhou.

What is the best time to visit Huangshan?

The Yellow Mountains are the real sites suitable for travel all year round. Actually many Chinese would like to visit it for four times to enjoy its different charms. No matter in which season you are planning to visit, you won't be disappointed. However winter is believed to be the season with more possibility for viewing the sea of clouds. Do remember to avoid all holidays in China, e.g. May Day Holiday (May 1 to May 3) and National Holiday (October 1 to October 7).

How to visit Huangshan and how long should I stay?

Use cable cars for ascending and descending the mountain. Round-trip cable cars are available. We don't recommend you hike all the way but just hike for the real essence of the Yellow Mountains, unless you are totally physically prepared for that.

Hire a local English-speaking guide. Nearly nobody speaks English on the mountain, which means you should never waste your precious time on useless asking for information or directions. Road signs are not very clear to foreigners. It will be easier and makes the trip more enjoyable with a local guide knowing the way well and foreigners' way well.

Make sure you are up for the sunrise or sunset, so quit the idea of taking a day trip. Though the chance of viewing the sunset or sunrise is slim at some time, at least you should make a try. And spending one night on the mountain will help your trip more enjoyable. You won't want to rush for the time and ruin the trip.

Three days and two nights are recommended for a first-timer . Usually we recommend our customers stay one night at downtown Huangshan City for rest and Tunxi Old Street. Leave the heavy luggage at paid storage in the hotel, which our guide will ask the hotel to take care of it. Then head for the mountain trip for 2 days and 1 night, including visiting a local ancient village near the Yellow Mountains.

What Does Huangshan, Yellow Mountain and Tunxi Mean?

Huangshan is a city located in the Anhui Province of China.

Yellow Mountain is one of the most renowned mountains in China. It is 60 kilometers away from the city of Huangshan.

Tunx i is a district in the city of Huangshan. The only airport of Huanshang city is located in this district. The old streets in this district are popular tourist attractions.

Where to Stay During the Shanghai and Huangshan Tour?

In Shanghai , it's highly recommended to stay around People's Square in Puxi , west of the Huangpu River. The top attractions of Shanghai are mainly located around this area. Full Itinerary Day by day

Today you will go to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to catch a  high speed G train  which takes about 3 hours to get to Huanshan North Railway Station. Upon arrival, be greeted by our local tour guide who is holding a sign with your name in the Arrival Hall of Huangshan North Railway Station. Then a comfortable vehicle (non-smoking) with an experienced driver will transfer you directly to your hotel in Huangshan downtown. Your guide will help you check in. The rest of the day is on your own to discover this beautiful city.

Huangshan City

Today after breakfast, our guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel, then drive about  80 kilometers  (1.5 hours) to the foot of Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the most beautiful mountains in China. Your memorable Huangshan trip starts!

To save energy and time, you will directly transfer by park bus from the mountain foot to  Yungu Temple  to  take a cableway  to upper beautiful sightseeing area of Huangshan Mountain – North Sea Scenic Area which is famous for marvelous precipitous peaks, beautiful giant pine trees and far-reaching vision. Walk to lofty  Begin-to-Believe Peak  (1668m) to stretch your eyesight over cloud seas to far distance, and then hike about 40 minutes to Dispelling Cloud Pavilion to look down the Dreamland -  West Sea Grand Canyon . Walk down along the stone steps to the deeper area of the canyon while enjoying the Avatar-like rising rock peaks, unfathomable cliffs, bizarre stones and tenacious pine trees.

Generally speaking, it takes about 3 hours for energetic hiker to hike from the  Dispelling Cloud Pavilion , via 1st Ring and 2nd Ring to the bottom and return to the starting point. For beginners, children, and senior travelers, you can decide the hiking length on your own according to your physical condition, usually 2 hours for the 1st Ring and 2.5hrs for the 2nd Ring. In the bottom of the canyon, there is also a monorail cable trains for those who don’t want to return by walking to transfer back to the peak area.

If time and energy allow, you can spend about one hour to explore the Sky Sea Scenic Area where you can enjoy the sunset from the second highest peak -  Bright Summit  (1840m), visit the incredible  Flying-over Rock , then return back your hotel and have a good rest.

(Please Note: from December to the late March of next year, West Sea Grand Canyon is usually closed for the cold weather and heavy snow. Please feel free to contact us to adjust your itinerary)

Jack and Emily from UK visited West Sea Grand Canyon, Yellow Mountain in October, 2019

Get up early (usually around 5am to 6am) to enjoy the magnificent sunrise from Huangshan. We suggest you watch the sunrise from the Refreshing Terrance which is only a few minutes’ walking from Beihai Hotel. In good-weather days, you can see clearly the golden light of the sun piercing the mists, and rocky peaks rising above the frothy, ever-changing sea of white clouds. After the sunrise, get back to your hotel for breakfast.

Continue on your wonderful sightseeing on the Yellow Mountain to see the famous Dawn Pavilion , Stone Monkey Watching the Sea on the Lion Peak (1690m). Then walk along the wood path to the cable station to take a cable car to exit the mountain. Your driver is ready at the mountain foot to transfer you back to Huangshan City for lunch.

After lunch, go for a relaxing stroll on the 900-year-old Tunxi Ancient Street to appreciate authentic old Huizhou-style architectures. Next comes an interesting visit to Hu Kaiwen Ink-stick Factory to find out how ancient Chinese people produce ink sticks (major item used to write and paint in ancient time).

The rest of today is free for you to relax and have a good rest.

Today, you are going to visit two remarkable ancient villages, best examples of ancient Huizhou-style architecture, which are listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Hongcun and Xidi . Quite different from other traditional ancient villages in China, the layout, landscape, architectural form, decoration, and construction techniques all retain the original features Hongcun and Xidi are much more exquisite and grandiose, because they were built by successful officials or merchants returning home from official appointments and business.

Hongcun , originated during Song Dynasty (960-1276), is praised as the most beautiful village in China. It is famous as the ancient village in the Chinese painting. The most beautiful sites are the Moon Lake , the crescent-like pond surrounded by several grand dwellings, and Southern Lake Academy , a private ancient school served for the village. One interesting fact is that the whole village is arranged in the shape of an ox. The famous Oscar-winner film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was filmed in Hongcun.

Xidi Village is only about 10km from Hongcun. Its well-spaced houses with white walls, elegant decorations and black tiles are surrounded by mountains, which makes Xidi an ideal place for paint from life. Xidi is a magnificent villager of imperial officers. It contributed about 130 government officials, some of whom were dignitaries in the imperial courts, during Ming and Qing Dynasties. Currently, there are still 124 well-preserved ancient dwelling with unique style in the village.

After the sightseeing, it’s time for departure. Your tour guide and driver will escort you to catch your flight/train to the next destination. Our service ends.

Huangshan Itinerary - How Long to Spend in Huangshan

Huangshan is famous for its breathtaking Yellow Mountains landscape of granite peaks, charismatic pine trees, and cloud-sea vistas. Huangshan is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Discover the best duration for your Huangshan adventure from these itineraries, ranging from a quick 2-day trip to a deeper 5-day exploration — allowing you to make the most of your time and have the best experiences in this majestic region.

How Long to Spend in Huangshan

Generally speaking, a typical Huangshan trip takes about 3–4 days. Within 3–4 days, you can cover the main highlights of Huangshan and the surrounding ancient village at a comfortable pace.

If you only have 2 days, you can still visit Huangshan and explore the major Yellow Mountains highlights such as Beginning-to-Believe Peak and West Sea Grand Canyon, as long as you plan your itinerary well. If you would like some help with the planning, you could have an experienced local travel expert, like us, maximize your travel experience.

If you want to have a deep exploration of the mountains and the idyllic and culture-filled surrounding areas, we recommend that you spend about 5 days enjoying your Huangshan adventure. An extended stay would give you the opportunity to hike all the major trails, witness sunrises, and sunsets from a number of awesome viewpoints, explore the ancient villages at a leisurely pace, and possibly visit the attractive neighboring areas of Tunxi and Wuyuan.

Huangshan in 3 Days — Essence of Huangshan

A 3-day Huangshan itinerary would allow you to enjoy the main highlights of the Yellow Mountains and visit a medieval village and street — Hongcun and Tunxi Old Street — at a relaxed pace.

See below for a sample 3-day itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrival, visit Tunxi Ancient Street and Hongcun
  • Day 2: Yellow Mountains tour
  • Day 3: Yellow Mountains sunrise, departure

Enjoy a comfortable stroll through Hongcun — a quiet (except for the seasonal tourist droves) and artistically charming tiny village nestling at the foot of the Yellow Mountains. Our guide could help take some awesome memorial photos for you there.

You would spend a day and a night on the Yellow Mountains to enjoy their highlights including a captivating sunset and sunrise. With our tailored guidance, you can choose the level of exploration that suits you best. Our guide would customize the best route according to your preference and fitness level, whether you are an energetic hiker who wants to explore off-the-beaten-path or beginners, a family with children, or senior citizens.

Sunset and sunrise on the Yellow Mountains would definitely be highlights of your tour (with good weather). Our experienced guide would lead you to the best vantage points for these awe-inspiring moments. The weather plays a significant role in this experience. We recommend consulting your travel advisor when planning your trip to inquire about the potential for favorable weather conditions, increasing your chances of watching enchanting sunset or sunrise panoramas.

Huangshan in 4 Days — In-Depth Trekking Experience

If you want a deep exploration of the Yellow Mountains, we can help you arrange a trekking route on less-traveled paths, allowing you to appreciate undisturbed beauty away from the tourists.

Here's a sample itinerary for your consideration:

  • Day 1: Huangshan arrival
  • Day 2: Trek up the Yellow Mountains, sunset among the peaks
  • Day 3: Trek in West Sea Grand Canyon
  • Day 4: Trek down the mountainside

During this itinerary, you would have a great adventure exploring the legendary mountain area on foot. You would uncover hidden gems that normal travelers never have a chance to see.

Your guide would accompany you every step of the way. You would trek at your own pace, savor the picturesque landscapes, and capture stunning photographs without the usual tour-group disruptions. You would hike up and down the mountain on different paths, ensuring that you experience a diverse range of views and trails.

Recommended tour: 4-Day Trekking in the Yellow Mountains

Huangshan in 2 Days — a Quick Explore

With a 2-day tour, we recommend you focus on the main highlights of the Yellow Mountains. To make the most of your short trip, we recommend the following well-planned 2-day itinerary:

  • Day 1: Yellow Mountain tour
  • Day 2: Yellow Mountain sunrise, Hongcun village, departure

To have a full 2 days for your Yellow Mountains tour, you would need to arrive a day earlier. You would take a cable car up the mountain and explore key attractions, such as Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Bright Summit Peak, and the West Sea Grand Canyon. You would also catch a sunrise and/or sunset during your stay if the weather permits.

However, with a 2-day tour, you would probably miss the beautiful surrounding villages. We recommend leaving at least 3 days to explore both the Yellow Mountains and the old-style villages at the mountains' foot.

If your goal is to experience the essence of Huangshan within a limited time, a well-planned 2-day trip can undoubtedly be a rewarding and memorable adventure.

Yellow Mountains Itineraries from Shanghai/Hangzhou
