3 Days in Santiago Itinerary: The Best Things to See & Do

Have you ever thought of planning a trip to Chile? Even among adventurous travelers, Chile is often overlooked for more popular countries like Peru, Brazil, or Argentina. If you’ve made it to this post, you’re smarter than that – you want to know how to visit Santiago, and I’m here to help.

Santiago is the capital of Chile, the biggest city which is home to 7 million people. It is in the interior, away from the Pacific Coast, and near the Andes on Chile’s western border. It’s a great base for exploring more of Chile or making a stop on a multi-city tour of South America .

I spent five days in Santiago, traveling with friends and fellow travel bloggers. We explored the best Santiago has to offer, including top neighborhoods, fascinating museums, and strolling through the city’s green spaces. In this post you’ll find everything you need to know to plan a three-day itinerary in Santiago, and I’m happy to answer any questions you have in the comments.

3 days in Santiago itinerary

The Best Things to See & Do in Santiago

Obviously, this list isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list of everything you can do in Santiago – it’s a select list of what I think you shouldn’t miss.

Plaza de Arma

Santiago - Plaza de Armas

The Plaza de Armas is the central square in Santiago. It has a very European vibe, a symmetrical set of paths and benches with palms and leafy trees that provide shade to different areas throughout the day. Around the square, there are administrative buildings, restaurants and cafes, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. You can also stop at the STGO letters for a selfie.

Metropolitan Cathedral

Santiago Metropolitian Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral is the most auspicious building on the Plaza de Armas, and it’s worth a stop in even if you aren’t a practicing religious person. The Metropolitan Cathedral is much like European cathedrals, with a beautifully painted ceiling, statues, and alcoves throughout the church.

The Cathedral is a vital part of life for many Santiaguinos and it’s one of the top sights in the city. The Metropolitan Cathedral is open to the public and free. If there’s a mass going on, you can only access the side aisles of the cathedral and should be respectful and quiet.

San Cristóbal Hill

Santiago - San Cristobal Hill

San Cristóbal Hill is the biggest hill in central Santiago; it’s easy to walk here and explore the hill for a whole day if you choose to. Some of the most popular spots in the city are on San Cristóbal Hill, including the popular funicular which takes you up and down the hill. You can visit the Chilean National Zoo and a Japanese-style garden which are also on the hill. It can get quite hot on San Cristóbal Hill in the afternoons, so this is a great place to start the day, or to watch sunset.

Riding the funicular up San Cristóbal Hill is an easy way to get a panoramic view of Santiago, too. You’ll need to queue up at the bottom of the hill to access the funicular, and tickets are 1500 CLP ($2.25) per person one way.

Also on San Cristóbal Hill, you can visit the Sanctuary and statue of the Immaculate Conception. This open-air church is nearby the statue to the Virgin Mary which is visible atop the hill from around Santiago.

Santa Lucía Hill

Santiago - Santa Lucia Hill

Santa Lucía Hill is the other hill in the Santiago area; it’s actually an ancient, dormant volcano! This is an easy hill to walk up from several sides, and there are good views and some fascinating buildings atop the hill. You can climb to the tower at the fort atop the hill, or sit in the shade near the Neptune fountain listening to the water playing. There’s also a Japanese garden.

It can also get pretty warm on Santa Lucía Hill too, so plan accordingly if you’re going to climb the hill.

La Moneda Palace

Santiago - La Moneda

La Moneda is the presidential palace which was rebuilt after the previous one was bombed in the 1973 coup. The building is a neoclassical-style building with a plaza on one side and a massive water pool on the other. Underneath the pool, you can visit the cultural center , which houses exhibits on Chilean and South American history. If you don’t want to pay to go inside La Moneda, it’s worth walking around as part of a stroll through central Santiago.

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino

Santiago - Museum of Pre-Colombian Art

The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino isn’t large, but it’s filled with the most extensive collection of Southern and Central American indigenous art I’ve ever seen. The exhibits are also presented in a respectful and elegant way; it treats these pieces as art despite their diversity and age.

My favorite exhibit by far was Chile ante Chile (Chile Before Chile) which is located on the underground floor. The low lighting and glass cases create a somber ambiance that underscores how these artifacts tell the stories of Chile. The upper level has a series of galleries from different regions of the Americas, which demonstrate the different materials and styles of craft. There’s also an open court with some special exhibits off to the side, including one for children and families.

Admission is 7000 CLP ($10.60) for non-Chilean nationals.

Museo de la Memoria y Derechos Humanos

Santiago is home to many museums, and the Museo de la Memoria y Derechos Humanos (Museum of Memory and Human Rights) is the other one I consider a must-visit if you’re making a trip. Be warned: this isn’t a museum that will necessarily make you feel cheery when you leave.

The Museo documents the victims of human rights violations during the Pinochet regime between 1973 and 1990, and as you might imagine, it’s heavy material. You’ll walk away with a much deeper understanding of a dark chapter in Chilean history, and the museum serves as a way of holding the country accountable to never let that happen again.

Vega Markets

Santiago - Vega Markets

If you love food or local markets, the Vega markets – Vega Central and La Vega Chica – should definitely be on your list. Vega Central is a massive traditional market, full of food and goods stalls. You can buy fresh produce, meat cut by the butchers before your eyes, spices and ingredients, and a variety of homegoods. There’s also a small food market with a couple restaurants and a seating area.

La Vega Chica has more food vendors, if you’re willing to weave through the narrow walkways to choose one that catches your eye. Andrew Zimmern lists it among his top recommended food spots in Santiago, and I have to agree – this is a top place to find traditional, homestyle Chilean dishes.

My advice? Wander past the stalls, pick one that catches your eye, and point out what you want on the menu. Be prepared to try whatever arrives!

Wine Tasting

Santiago - Wine Tasting

Chile is one of the great wine countries in the world, even if it doesn’t typically make the list with places like California and France. While they have different standards for winemaking and even some different varietals than you’ll find elsewhere in the world, Chile’s long narrow shape and diverse geography (mountainous to coastal) means they can produce many different types of wine in close proximity.

As such, it’s possible to enjoy a lot of different types of wine that are all made in Chile. The best bar by far is Bocanariz . You’ll need a reservation to get a table, but every server is a sommelier who can walk you through the different tasting flights and bottles available. They have tasting plates and a full menu as well, so you can sample some Chilean dishes or have dinner depending on your own itinerary (and how much wine you plan to drink!).

If you have the time or an extra day, consider booking a wine tour out of Santiago. The Little Wine Bus is a full-day tour that takes you to the Maipo Valley where you can try small and family vineyards and learn more about the vine-to-bottle process and Chilean wine regions.

Santiago - La Piojera

La Piojera is considered one of Santiago’s best bars, though it’s not the ‘best’ in most of the categories people usually consider (cleanliness, ambiance, quality of drink).

What makes La Piojera special is that it’s the place to try Terremoto, the earthquake. This unusual cocktail has pipeño (fermented wine), piña (pienapple) ice cream, fernet, and grenadine, and is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever tasted. I’d call it a “Vegemite experience” – you either love it or you hate it!

Where to Stay in Santiago

Santiago Sunset

Hotels in Santiago

Here are a few hotels that caught my eye in Santiago. All of these are under $200 per night, and I went for those that had some personality – and pools!

• Luciano K Hotel – I’m obsessed with the rooftop spaces, and the rooms look so luxe. From $197 per night; Read reviews on TripAdvisor and book on Booking.com .

• Casa Bueras Boutique Hotel – Located in a great spot within easy walking distance of everything I think you need to see in Santiago. From $159 per night; Read reviews on TripAdvisor and book on Booking.com .

• ICON Hotel – This might be an accident, but I found rooms here as low as $107 per night – and you’ll have stunning views from this high-rise hotel. Read reviews on TripAdvisor and book on Booking.com .

Airbnbs in Santiago

I know there’s controversy around Airbnbs, but I personally prefer them. I do my best to stay with local hosts rather than companies listing their vacation rentals on the site. After staying in so many over the years, I’ve got a good eye for them. Here are some worth considering:

• Furnished Apartment Near Recoleta – This is the first flat we stayed in, and it was perfect for our group. The view was great, the apartment was spacious, and everything went smoothly. This host has a lot of other properties, so we booked a second one with him later in the trip – it was not good, so only book this one if you like it! I can’t vouch for any of his others! Sleeps 6, from $24 per night; book on Airbnb.

• Espacioso Loft Étnico en el Barrio Bellavista – I’m obsessed with Airbnb Plus, and this is the first one that catches my eye. It’s in Bellavista, right near one of the centers of nightlife. Sleeps 3, from $53 per night; book on Airbnb .

• Sophisticated Condo in the Center of Santiago – This is a great affordable option in the heart of Santiago’s business core and near most of the major sights. Sleeps 2, from $21 per night; book on Airbnb .

Getting Around Santiago

Getting around Santiago is downright easy, between the transit system and the technology we now have available.

Public Transit in Santiago

For public transit in Santiago, you have two main options: the Metro de Santiago and the micros (buses). These two are a single transit system, which is handy because you can transfer between them. There are five metro lines and dozens of bus routes, so it’s possible to get almost anywhere within central Santiago using public transit.

The cheapest way to use public transit is with a Tarjeta bip! (beep card). The card costs 1550 CLP (about $2.50) and you can reload in denominations of 750 CLP (around $1.15); most rides are around 660 CLP (around $1).

Unfortunately, the airport is not part of the transantiago (Santiago transit system), you can easily book an airport transfer from other companies like this one or TransVIP (which is what friends and I used).

Other Transit Options

You can definitely catch Ubers or Taxis if you need to get somewhere that isn’t easily accessed on the Santiago Metro. You can also use the  hop-on hop-off bus which goes between all the major tourist attractions.

There are also airport transfer companies which you can arrange in advance or book to get to/from Santiago International Airport.

There’s also a number of bus companies that provide transport between major cities throughout Chile. These are called interurbanos, or intercity busses.

A 3-Day Itinerary for Santiago

Now you’re all set! You can put together the activities and sights you’re keen on, plus use transit to get around. Below I’ve detailed how I would put these together into a three-day Santiago itinerary.

Day 1: Exploring Santiago’s Best

Santiago - Santa Lucia Hill

Head to Bocanáriz for your reserved dining time. Enjoy Chilean wine, then a walk back to your hotel or Airbnb through the streets, which are usually quiet and peaceful after sundown.

Day 2: Wine Tasting Tour

Santiago Wine Tasting

Assuming you enjoyed last night’s wine, I recommend booking your spot on the Little Wine Bus to the Maipo Valley . This is a full-day tour (from around 9am to 6pm), so it takes most of the day.

You’ll set out from Santiago on the provided transport, and start the day with brunch at an artist’s garden. On our tour, we visited about 5-6 wineries, and had lunch at a small family restaurant and B&B, and ended the day at the guide’s home where he distills his own pipeño. (What’s pipeño? Read more here .)

Santiago Wine Tasting

Back in Santiago after the tour, you might do dinner at Sarita Colonia . I didn’t eat here during my trip, and some reviews say it is a bit overpriced, but it’s got a fun menu and good cocktails (if you need one last drink for the day!).

Day 3: Chilean Culture & Santiago Sights

Santiago Street Art

For lunch, head to Vega Chica , the food market in Recoleta neighborhood. There are plenty of choices, but this is a great chance to try pasteles de choclo or porotos con riendas which are both offered at many restaurants in the market. You can then walk along the Río Mapocho toward the Belles Artes museum and Bellavista neighborhood.

For the last few hours of daylight, ascend San Cristóbal Hill using the funicular to see the city and sights atop the hill. Once the sun goes down, head back down and eat dinner on your way to La Piojera for a terremoto. (What’s terremoto? Find out here.) After one, you won’t want to do anything else for the night, and can call your trip to Santiago a success!

Excellent hotels, with great location, strong service, great facilities, great food (where included), superb guides, etc. We went to the Atacama Desert, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Patagonia (Torres de Paine) and the cities of Santiago and Valpareso). Everything promised was delivered exactly as promised. There was no effort to add anything on or push us to a store or in any way go cheap. We went in Chilean winter, the low season--all the better. No crowds, no waiting. Admittedly we were lucky in Patagonia where weather could have been an issue, but we knew the risk. The trip of necessity involved ten different air flights (six within Chile). Not fun but all on Latin American Air, which was better than most anywhere.

See above. Not cheap but delivered on everything.

Dear Dr. Howell Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us! We’re delighted to hear how well your adventure to Chile went – it sounds like you had the most memorable time. We will make sure to share your kind comments with our partners, Trails of Chile, and your specialist too. We look forward to sending you away on your next dream Audley trip. Audley hires swindlers as tour guides who overcharge you for services others are providing and force you to go to stores and tell you to buy things and won't take no for an answer

We booked with Audley and they were fantastic until they had our money. We booked with Audley and they were fantastic until they had our money. However, one third of our trip was AWFUL and they literally had a tour guide for us for our four days in Hoi An who tried to (and succeeded) in ripping us off, upcharging us for services that he wasn't providing (merely translating), and essentially holding us captive and forcing us to go to a pottery village and wouldn't let us leave despite us saying we had no interest and didn't want to spend our money there. He forced us to go into at least six shops in that village alone telling us to buy something. Entirely unprofessional. We also almost missed our flight out of Hoi An because he insisted we didn't have to leave as early as everyone else said to leave (you could tell from his hungover face and Facebook pictures it was because he wanted to party the night before). Anyways, we didn't have our AIRLINE TICKETS until SIX minutes before boarding began and then he left us to fend for ourselves. We had to do our best to communicate with people in the security line to ask to go ahead of others so we wouldn't miss our flight. We raised these (among other) concerns with Audley Travel and were told that they would follow up and their local company would be reaching out. It's been three weeks, we have been back in the States for two weeks, and we have heard nothing. I suppose after getting $10k from you and us having no recourse they don't really care to follow-through or to ensure that we have a positive experience on our trip. I was in the early stages of planning a trip through Audley for my parents but notified them we will not be using them for that trip, and that we would be cautioning everyone else we know against using such an unprofessional company.

See the review above. With respect to Audley, I'm most disappointed in the lack of follow through in correcting or dealing with the unprofessional tour guide that we were stuck with for four days of our trip.

Beautiful holiday in Hawaii

Booked a 16-day trip to Hawaii covering three islands, self-drive. Included numerous tours, I.e. helicopter tour, snorkel and sail tour, etc.

Used Audley Travel for a two-week trip to Hawaii. The agent was very knowledgeable about the destination and booked us on some very unique experiences that I would not have found on my own. While there were some issues, everything was either rectified or we were compensated for them.

Dear Marilyn Thank you for sharing your kind comments with us. We're delighted to hear how well your trip went and we hope you have some wonderful memories from your time in Hawaii. It's disappointing some issues were encountered but we are pleased to have been able to amicably resolve these for you. We look forward to working with you again and to send you away on your next dream Audley vacation. Best wishes Audley Travel

In the time of COVID, utilizing a reputable tour operator is crucial!

We were unable to proceed with our holiday due to COVID closures and canceled our trip.

When Sweden closed to Americans, Audley offered credit. After cajoling and complaining, they refunded our money in full, hence I am editing my previously negative comments here. Consumers should be aware that travel insurance will not refund your money in the event an airline or tour operator offers credit for flights, hotels, tour plans, etc. even due to COVID. Whether or not one can use that credit is irrelevant to the travel insurance company because from their perspective, if credit is offered then the consumer has not incurred a loss. It is, therefore, imperative that one deal with a highly reputable tour operator, and in the end, Audley was that kind of tour operator. As a result, I would consider using them again in the future.

Dear Mr Tarant Thank you for taking the time to graciously update your review. Delivering great client service is at the heart of what we do and are glad the team was able to resolve your concern to your satisfaction. We look forward to working with you again and to send you away on a dream Audley trip once the time is right for you. Best regards Audley Travel

We then headed back to Cape Town for some beach time in Clifton/Camps Bay, and some amazing food, before flying home. We have been to South Africa, as well as to several other countries in Africa over the years but this trip was so well organized, and enabled us to really soak in all that the people, culture, landscape, and animals were offering us. Thank you so much!

Best in class!

Thank you for leaving such a wonderful review of your vacation in South Africa. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the experiences we organised for you and that the service Audley provided was of high standard. We hope to hear from you again when you're ready to start planning your next adventure!

I'm giving it average, because I enjoyed Vietnam. Japan was poorly organized. I have traveled most of the world in the last twenty years. There are much better people out there. I have also planned my own trips.

We are so sorry that you didn't find the value in our service. In this case, it sounds like perhaps the services we offer were not a great fit for you as an independent and experienced traveler. As mentioned above, after speaking with a manger we understand that perhaps what we do as a company isn’t right for your needs as a traveler. We are sorry that you felt that we didn't meet your expectations but we are very pleased that we have resolved this matter with you privately.

New Zealand and Australia with Audley Travel

My husband and I recently used Audley Travel for a trip to Australia and New Zealand. The destination is great.

Regarding Audley, the hotels and most excursions were fine. However, you choose a travel agency for help with the logistics--easy directions, smooth travel, etc. This is not the case in our experience with Audley. First, Audley did not have us fly in a day ahead so that if any of the 4 flights to our initial destination was delayed, then we had a cushion. In fact the first flight was delayed. Any company that has been in this business as long as Audley should not have made this logistical mistake. In addition, it is extremely difficult to follow the directions Audley includes in their travel packet: key information is buried in non-essential information about the area, you have to flip back and forth in their book to find where you are supposed to be when. Critical information about hotels or transportation for example was spread out over multiple documents. For their prices, there is no excuse for this. As a point of information, both my husband and I are PhDs and we are comfortable dealing with complex information. Audley's documents are really bad, and this is s systemic issue. In other words, it is not the fault of one bad travel agent at Audley. It is the fault of the Audley process as a whole. At one of the hotels Audley uses, the person at the desk who was helping me with a very confusing Audley-booked excursion mentioned that about half the Audley clients had problems. The word she used for that half was "a disaster." I would highly recommend going with someone else who can make the logistics clear and easy to use. No travel agency gets credit for a great destination (no travel agency created the beauty of New Zealand or Australia). A good agency at minimum handle logistics well. Audley does not in my experience.

Dear Mrs Stephens Thank you for leaving your review. I am very sorry you did not have the experience with Audley you should have, it is very disappointing to read your comments on the logistics and our Travel Pack. Our paperwork is intended to make things easier and not confuse so we apologise for any inconvenience for this. We currently have an ongoing project on our documentation and your feedback is very important to us, therefore I have asked a manager from our New Zealand team to reach out to you to discuss all your feedback in more detail. I hope overall you had a wonderful holiday, it is as you say, a great destination!

First Class Holiday

We have just returned from a First Class holiday to Vietnam organised by Audley Travel. Hayley Ryan organised it for us and delivered what she said she would. She even arranged a local sim for our phone just in case we needed to contact our guides. Hotels and tours were all excellent and within walking distance of restaurants and shops. Thank You Hayley for an excellent trip, we will remember it for a long time to come.

Audley Travel. Hayley Ryan was our tour adviser. She organised a wonderful holiday for us with fantastic hotels and tours nothing was too much bother for her. She kept in touch regularly with us and was very helpful in explaining everything.

Thank you for your review it's great to read you had a fabulous trip, and one which you will remember for a long time! We have shared your comments with Hayley and the team.

Thank you again and we look forward to helping you organise a future adventure!

We visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

We hired Audley Travel to assist of with planning our trip to Thailand. The agent assigned to us for the most part put together a good itinerary with a few notable exceptions: 1) he failed to inform us that each of our planned excursions from the hotel averaged 11/2 travel hours or more in each direction 2) he didn’t make the effort to secure requested seating on flights and 3) made multitlple clearical mistakes in the intinerary. We requested the best hotels and they were all very good. However, for the fees paid the trip felt “packaged” and not custom.

Dear Andrew, thank you so much for your comments and I am happy to read overall you had good time in Thailand. We tailor our itineraries based on our clients requirements and our expertise, so it is disappointing to read the elements which did not live up to expectations. I understand a manager has been in contact with you to discuss your experience thoroughly.

We were attempting to plan our honeymoon to Borneo ourselves, but after speaking to Charlotte at Audley travel we were so impressed with her knowledge and enthusiasm for her work that we knew we should put herself in her very safe hands. We thought it would be expensive as Audley have a reputation, however it was not and it made for such as easy relaxed trip that it was well worth it. She was a fantastic support for us and always available at the end of the phone. We cannot recommend her highly enough.

Andy at Audley very cleverly arranged our Golden wedding celebration safari in conjunction with meeting up with our family. It couldn’t have been better. The itinerary he suggested, locations and hotels were superb. We were at first apprehensive to self drive however we felt safe and at ease with maps provided and knowing that Audley are the South Africa experts and provide 24 hour assistance if necessary. Thank you!

Fantastic family trip to Tanzania, thanks to Audley!

When I started to plan our trip to Tanzania, I knew I needed a reliable company to take care of it end to end, particularly while we were there (I had been stuck in Kenya when the guide's truck broke down!). Audley was absolutely fantastic. Our travel planner, Marcha Bauerlein-de Jong, understood our requirements, budget and had enormous patience when I kept changing my mind 😀. Her support before, during and after the trip was simply outstanding. I will certainly use Audley again and have recommended to all my friends going to Africa!

Audley helped us plan our dream safari adventure!

Our Specialist Thora listened carefully to what we wanted from our dream South Africa adventure. She put together an itinerary that was perfect for our personal interests and within our budget! Audley did all the leg work, we just "showed up" for our personalized trip, and it all went off without a hitch! Thora made herself available for video chats to answer any questions. We felt cared for throughout the entire experience! All in all it was a dream come true!

The best trip ever!

My trip was amazing more than I hoped for. My Borneo specialist Charlotte Callin was incredibly, the itinerary that she put together for me couldn’t have been more perfect. I was having a small wobble before I went as was travelling on my own so I emailed Charlotte and she replied so quickly with lots of advice and encouragement, this turned my nerves into excitement. I can not thank her enough! I now have the travel bug and will be back to Charlotte for my next trip.

Great Service & Overall Experience

We used Audley to plan our honeymoon in Tanzania. It was the first time we used a Travel Agent as we mostly book our trips ourselves. We were so positively surprised by our experience with Audley! Lulu was incredible from the beginning to the very end! She helped us refine our itinerary until we were absolutely happy with it, she was always very responsive and easy/quick to communicate with us. We felt really spoiled and pampered and we will definitely use Audley's expertise again. We also already dream of our return to beautiful Tanzania and working with Lulu again!

Date of experience : July 07, 2024

We travelled to Tanzania with Audley

We travelled to Tanzania with Audley, first safari at Selous Kulinda camp in Nyerere National park then at Breezes on Zanzibar. Both venues could not have done more for us and gave us amazing personal care. The planning by Marcha was brilliant, she listened to our requests, what we wanted from the trip and delivered! Right up to during and after the trip she was in touch with us too. I fully recommend Audley. We wanted a special birthday trip and we had a once in a lifetime experience. Both the safari and relaxing and exploring on Zanzibar. Fantastic. Thank you

Date of experience : August 13, 2024

Dear Tom Gordon, We’d like to thank you for your kind review. It’s wonderful to read how well Marcha catered for your needs and how instrumental her support was throughout your Audley journey. We will pass on your feedback to Marcha and the team. We are so thrilled that your special birthday trip went so amazingly well and that you had a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Audley Travel for creating such a memorable Japan vacation!

We started planning a two-week trip to Japan for our family of five and we quickly realized how daunting that process was going to be. Thank goodness we found Audley Travel! Our Senior Specialist Adam Falk made the planning a real pleasure and took all the stress and anxiety away. Adam created a great itinerary based on the initial conversation that we had, and it became even better after a few iterations. The suggestions Adam provided for special places to visit in Tokyo and Kyoto during our pre-trip video call turned out to be some of the real highlights of our trip. Everything that Audley planned for us went off perfectly and made the trip very memorable. There were special Japan experiences planned in our itinerary that we never would have thought of doing on our own. I can't imagine planning another big trip without them and we will definitely be using Audley again in the future. It was especially comforting having a couple of "phone a friend" options to get assistance from in-country Audley staff for any issues we may encounter while in Japan. We used this once during the trip to make a change in our rental car pick up time and they took care of everything before the end of the day. Thank you Adam and Audley Travel for creating such a memorable family vacation!

Date of experience : July 26, 2024

Hi Bill, We greatly appreciate your kind words! It's wonderful to hear that your trip to Japan was everything you hoped for, and that Adam's expert planning played such a big role in making it memorable for your family. Knowing that we could take the stress off your shoulders and provide the peace of mind you needed truly reinforces why we love what we do. We're delighted that the emergency contact numbers gave you extra assurance throughout your journey. We look forward to helping you plan your next big adventure, and we will relay your thoughtful review to Adam. Best, Audley Travel US

Trip to Singapore and Vietnam

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Christian Le Fort in the Vietnam team recently. Our trip was flawless. Christian thought about every detail. He suggested hotels that were ideal for our family (including 2 children) and even encouraged us to move out of our comfort zone slightly to experience a taste of authentic Vietnam.  This ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.  Christian was courteous, knowledgeable and one of a kind. I got the impression that he had personally visited a few of the hotels which we stayed at so he gave us his first hand, valuable advice.  Before we left we received a fabulous binder full of useful information, including recommendations for local restaurants - we tried the majority of these and they were great.  All of our transfers arrived on time, tour guides were fabulous and hotels were impeccable. Fabulous service from Christian.

Date of experience : July 13, 2024

Hello Monica, We’d like to express our gratitude to you for your kind review. We are so glad that Christian Le Fort created such a fabulous trip for you. It is wonderful that Christian was able to convince you to include a few unusual experiences so you could immerse yourselves in the Vietnamese culture. We will pass on your feedback to Christian and the team. Audley Travel started with trips to Vietnam almost 30 years ago, so we are exceptionally proud that you found our local agents and hotels to be impeccable. We look forward to creating more flawless trips for you in the future. Best wishes, Audley Travel

Audley travel is an amazing experience

Audley travel is an amazing experience. We were planning a big family vacation to Ireland and Audley was my first stop! Having never traveled outside of the US, we knew we needed the most knowledgeable agents to plan all the details. Mark with Audley has been amazing! He listens to our needs and goals for travel as well as our concerns with being first timers outside of the states. Mark as well as the other travel team members have personal experience with traveling to Ireland which put me at great ease. Mark and the team are definitely a great travel asset!

Hi Kendra, We are so happy to hear about your wonderful trip to Ireland, and your positive experience with us! We truly pride ourselves on our country specialist's destination-specific expertise. It's great to hear that you were able to see the benefit of using our tailor-made services. We will be sure to share your kind feedback with Mark and his manager. Thank you for putting your trust in Audley to be your guide on your first trip outside of the US! Best, Audley Travel US

I can't imagine ever booking with a different agent

I reviewed Audley Travel around 18 months ago, and that review was based on the experience of booking the trip. Now the trip is over, I can review the execution of the plan. I'm very happy to say that it exceeded all of our expectations. First of all, the lead up to departure was exceptionally well managed by Audley. Our original specialist, Georgie, went on leave before our trip, so responsibility was passed over to Marche - both were outstanding. From the thoughtful destination themed hamper to the hour long video presentation of what to expect and travel tips for our safari, we felt very well prepared. The travel documents were very nicely packaged, and the app you get with all of the information and travel blog on it is a nice touch. From the moment we landed in Tanzania, everything went as smoothly as you could possibly imagine. With four internal flights, two transfers between international and domestic terminals and transfers to and from airstrips to hotels, there was plenty that could go wrong - but nothing did. Every flight was bang on time, and every transfer saw someone waiting for us ready to go as our flight landed. There was never a cause for worry. The hotels selected by our original specialist (Georgie) were exactly what we were looking for - good quality with a bit of a local feel, so as not to feel too sanitized from the locations we were visiting (I think the term we used was luxuriously rustic)! Selous Kulinda camp and Pongwe Beach hotel were both brilliant - the accommodation was beautiful and the service at both was outstanding. The safari element in particular will live long in the memory. The camp is run by a couple who clearly love to welcome guests and provide them with the best possible experience, employing very high quality staff both at the camp and to deliver the safari drives. We also got to experience the village life away from the camp, which was again something we were very keen on (Audley suggested a camp just outside the park, which a lot of companies didn't even consider, which allowed us to travel through the local town and stop to do some local shopping). As a final great touch, Audley clearly let the Pongwe Beach hotel know that we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary, and the hotel arranged for us to have a candlelit dinner on the beach on our final night, complete with a cake and celebratory Swahili singing to go with it. All in all, a terrific trip that was exactly what we were looking for.

Dear Nick Edwards, It is great to hear from you again and we are beyond thrilled to hear that the trip exceeded your expectations, especially celebrating such a special occasion! We are so glad that Georgie and Marcha could create such a special trip for you and we will make sure that your kind comments are shared with them. We look forward to welcoming you back to Audley Travel and create more adventures for you in the future. Kind regards, Audley Travel UK

So impressed with what felt like genuine care for their customers

The customer service from initial enquiry through to booking and then whilst we were away was fantastic. Glynn in the UK and the team over in Bali made us feel like we were the only clients they had!!! And the pro active request for feedback on return from holiday to enable them to continue to make their service as good as possible. Very rare for me to write a review but so impressed with every detail that felt compelled to put pen to paper (digitally these days of course!)

Hello Emma, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review! We are delighted that the service you have received from Glynn and the team, both in the UK and in Bali has been fantastic. Easy way to book a bespoke holiday

Relatively complex trip to Borneo was well planned and went without a hitch making it the relaxing experience we wanted. Charlotte listened to what we were interested in and suggested an itinerary which she was happy to amend taking our feedback into account. A couple of pre-departure hitches with changing flight schedules we seamlessly managed.

Two weeks in Japan

I recently used Audley Travel to book a two week holiday to Japan for myself and my 16 year old daughter. They had been recommended to me and I was not disappointed. Our usual holidays were more beach/all inclusive holidays….so Japan was very different to what we usual do. I dealt with Jo Wood and she was amazing. I did not really have an idea of what we wanted to do, but following a detailed call with Jo, where she got to know our likes/dislikes she built up a personal itinerary, which was perfect. From tea ceremonies to samurai sword lessons, manga drawing lessons to Sumo wrestling tournaments it had it all. Jo was great to deal with and she kept me up to date with everything throughout all the planning and booking process. A big thumbs up also to the Audley representative who met us at the airport when we landed in Tokyo and had all our travel tickets, travel cards and experience vouchers all ready for us, all clearly labelled up on a day to day basis. Thank you for such a memorable holiday. I would highly recommend Audley to anyone, and would not hesitate to use again.

Hi Sarah, Thank you so much for your wonderful 5-star review! We're thrilled to hear that your trip to Japan with your daughter was such a memorable experience. It's fantastic that Jo was able to create a personalised itinerary that captured your interests perfectly, from tea ceremonies to sumo wrestling tournaments. We're delighted that her attention to detail and continuous updates throughout the planning and booking process made your holiday enjoyable and stress free. We're also pleased to hear that our representative in Tokyo provided excellent support upon your arrival, ensuring all your travel documents and vouchers were well organised and ready for you. We will be sure to pass along your compliments to Jo and her manager. We can't wait to assist you with your next holiday and create more unforgettable experiences. Best Wishes, Audley Travel

Japan trip - Do not recommend Audley travel

I recently booked a trip to Japan with Audley Travel, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. While the initial booking process was smooth and included clear communication via phone calls, the overall experience was disappointing, especially considering the high cost. The initial booking process was straightforward, and I had a couple of phone calls to clearly describe my essential needs for the trip. Communication before the trip was generally fine, but there were notable issues. Audley was unable to confirm all accommodation details, particularly my request for booking connecting rooms for a 4-person family. Instead, we were often crammed into a small room, which was far from ideal. Additionally, I had specifically requested kid-friendly hotels that offered western menu options. This was not the case at our last stop, where the hotel provided exclusively traditional Japanese food, which was not suitable for my family. One significant problem was the overwhelming amount of information provided, both printed and online. Unfortunately, this information was often inconsistent and riddled with mistakes. The tour guides we worked with received different itineraries, causing confusion and frustration. Even worse, the itinerary included activities that were not actually booked, despite being paid for. The same issue occurred with accommodation specifics. Had I known they were not going to be able to book per my request (which they had claimed to be working on), I would have challenged the overall cost and probably used a different provider. During the trip, Audley's support was severely lacking. We repeatedly tried to contact them for solutions to various issues but received no response. Audley works with a local partner in Japan, but they were limited in their ability to resolve our problems and often directed us back to Audley. This resulted in a frustrating loop of no solutions and a waste of time. It also appears that Audley is very short-staffed. We received an out-of-office notice from the person who booked our trip, and no backup or alternative assistance was offered. This lack of support is unacceptable, given the price we paid for their services. Audley Travel also failed to point out important festivals happening on the dates of our travel. This was a significant oversight and something one would definitely expect a competent travel agency to handle. To their credit, Audley Travel did a decent job with very basic needs such as train ticket bookings and airport pickups. However, for everything else, their service was far below expectations. In acknowledgment of their shortcomings, Audley Travel issued a refund, but it was not commensurate with the impact these issues had on our trip. Overall, I do not recommend Audley Travel and will not be booking with them again.

Date of experience : July 09, 2024

Dear Esteban Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are sorry and disappointed that you felt that our support was inadequate on this occasion, and this is clearly not the high level of service you would expect from Audley. Our Client Experience team has contacted you, and we look forward to resolving this to your satisfaction. Best regards Audley Travel USA

Canadian Maritime States.

The 11 Most Unforgettable Day Trips from Santiago

By Author Graham Minser

Posted on Last updated: 18th March 2024

While Santiago offers much to travelers headed to Chile, a trip to the region would be incomplete without a few day trips exploring the countryside and urban areas beyond the main tourist attractions of Santiago .

Central Chile is a wonderfully diverse destination, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the country’s best activities in a compact area. In fact, one can ski and surf in the same day!

Add in a visit to the coastal cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, hiking near Santiago, and world-class wineries and you’ve got the makings of a phenomenal vacation.

Many of the best outdoor activities in the region are located in the stunning El Cajón del Maipo, a river gorge winding through the Andes mountains just southeast of Santiago. As the seasons change, so do the opportunities for adventure in this wild yet easily accessed location.

Because the region surrounding the capital is divided by forests and mountains, there is a lot of territory to explore.

Navigating and discovering the best destinations can seem a daunting task. However, with our guide to the best day trips from Santiago, rest assured you’ll enjoy an unforgettable trip to match your adventures in Santiago.

Colourful houses in Valparaiso, Chile

2023 safety update: The US State Department has suggested “exercising increased caution” when visiting Santiago. This is due to an increase in muggings, assaults, and carjackings taking place in the city. Unlicensed taxi drivers are an increasing issue, too, particularly at the airport, so it’s recommended to always book through a registered provider (we recommend the reliable, English-speaking My Ride Chile ). Previously safe tourist neighborhoods such as Bellavista and around the Plaza de Armas and the Central Market are becoming increasingly unsafe, and you’re best to visit them during the morning as things can take a turn later in the afternoon. It’s advised to take taxis (use Uber where possible or ask your accommodation to call a taxi; never hail a cab off the street) within these areas at nighttime. Read more safety recommendations here .

1. Take a road trip to El Cajón del Maipo

A good starting point for outdoor adventure not far from Santiago is the breathtaking river gorge El Cajón del Maipo , nestled in the Andes just southeast of the Chilean capital. A stunning year-round destination, this river valley is overlooked by seasonally snowclad mountains.

Accessible by frequent bus service or as a do-it-yourself destination by car hire, this river gorge is an ideal escape from the bustle of the city. Located just an hour and a half from the center of Santiago, this destination can become a bit crowded with locals visiting on the weekends. On weekdays, however, you’ll have no trouble finding your own secluded spot.

Along the road on either side of the gorge, as well as in the town of San José de Maipo, you can enjoy a growing culinary scene where cafes and bistros specialize in locally-sourced cuisine. An excellent place to linger for a coffee, some artisanal chocolate, a beer, or a sandwich is Cajón del Maipo Chocolatería Adicción del Maip o .

Further upstream, don’t miss the incredible views from El Morado lookout , with panoramic views of the surrounding area. It’s a fairly demanding climb, which will take you to 4320 meters (14,173 feet), but it’s well worth the effort.

Planning Your Trip to Chile?

Save time, stress & money with a customized travel itinerary planned for you by a Chile expert

What previous clients have said:

“Steph’s itinerary exceeded all expectations. She provided off-the-beaten-path hikes, great restaurants and accommodations, and very helpful local contacts. Due to the weather we had to deviate from our original plan, however Steph quickly responded to our email during the trip with further recommendations. Her service took all the guesswork out of planning our vacation and led to the most fun and unforgettable trip we have ever had!”

2. Ski and snowboard the outstanding resorts of the Chilean Andes

The mountains near Santiago are home to the continent’s best ski slopes, which offer the high standards of facilities you’d find in the alpine resorts of France or Austria. If you elect to visit Chile in the austral winter, you will not be disappointed by the winter sports on offer near the capital.

When resorts close for the summer in the Northern Hemisphere, winter athletes descend on Portillo , Valle Nevado, and Farellones . The latter are clustered directly east, an hour and a half from the city center. All resorts offer full clothing and equipment rental, and lessons in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The terrain is entirely above the tree line and the season runs from mid-June to mid-October.

The nearest to Santiago is Farellones , which offers a full range of winter sports and activities, including a full complement of runs for all abilities, tubing, canopying, fat tire snow cycling, and motorized snow carts.

Views of a ski slope and Santiago in the background from the slopes of Valle Nevado, a fantastic winter day trip from Santiago, Chile

Valle Nevado has a full range of runs, the option for heli-skiing, and also a snowpark for freestyle skiing or snowboarding for those who are so inclined. Although there are beginner runs, its pistes are suited more for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Valle Nevado is the furthest east into the mountains on the road from Santiago, an hour and forty-five minutes from the center.

A bit further afield, Portillo is perhaps the most renowned of Chile’s ski resorts. This is the preferred option among professional athletes for its unrivaled snow coverage, extensive range of advanced runs, heli-skiing, spa, full rental service, and beautiful vistas of its lake, the Laguna del Inca. While good quality snowboards are available for hire, the resort caters more to skiers and lacks a snowboarding terrain park. It’s around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city center.

3. Hike, bike, or climb a mountain at the resorts in the summer

While winters are a major draw for the mountain resorts, there’s no shortage of fun to be had during the summer. All the major resorts are open and offer a wide range of activities from high-adrenaline to more relaxed.

Farellones offers the best range of activities, and visitors can take their pick from riding the panoramic lift up the mountain, trekking to the scenic viewpoint El Nido de Condores (The Condor’s Nest), canopying (zip lining), mountain biking, or riding motorized three-wheel go karts.

4. Visit a winery in the Casablanca Valley

For many, a trip to Chile is incomplete without sampling the rightfully-lauded wines it produces. While it is possible to enjoy some excellent wine within Santiago, to fully appreciate the quality and viticultural tradition of the area it’s best to seek out one (or several) of its top-notch vineyards, which can be visited as part of an excursion from Santiago.

Chile is a very special wine-producing country, not only for the quality of its wine but for the wide variety of its grapes. When a fungus spread across Europe in the 19 th century, wiping out grape types such as Carignan and Carmenere, they survived in Chile due to its geographic isolation.

An aerial shot of the Casablanca Wine Valley in Chile

One of the best places to enjoy some of this wine is in the Casablanca Valley , which lies between Santiago and the coastal city of Valparaíso. While much of Chile’s large-scale commercial wine is grown in the Maipo Valley south of Santiago, many of the vineyards in Casablanca focus on high-quality, small-batch vintages.

A winery with a growing reputation is Viña Emiliana , which produces all-organic wines and offers simple or more extensive tours and tastings, picnics on their lovely grounds, and a crafting class for those keen on learning the process of making fine wine in an environmentally-conscious way.

Other wineries offering excellent tastings and tours in the vicinity include Bodegas RE , Matetic Vineyards , and Viña Casas del Bosque .

5. Take a wine tour within Santiago

For travelers interested in sampling Chile’s wine closer to their Santiago accommodation, there are some great options within the city limits. Because the city lies just north of highly-cultivated wine country, you won’t be short on options.

One such winery in the southeast of Santiago is Viña Cousiño Macul , which offers tours, tastings, and bikes for hire to explore its lovely grounds, where grapes have been grown for over 400 years. The nearest metro stop is Quilín, a short taxi ride from the vineyard.

Vina Santa Carolina, a winery that's easy to visit as part of a day trip from Santiago, Chile

Another popular option is the historic Viña Santa Carolina , also southeast of the center and easily reached by the Rodrigo de Araya metro stop. At nearly 150 years old, Santa Carolina is one of the oldest commercial wine producers in the country, evident from their cavernous brick cellar which houses vintages up to seventy years old.

6. Spend a day or two in atmospheric Valparaíso

While some travelers elect to stay overnight in the nearby port city, Valparaíso is also a great option for a Santiago day trip.

May 2023 safety update: the city of Valparaíso is becoming increasingly unsafe to visit. Muggings have been reported in the tourist neighborhoods of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion, even during the day. We recommend avoiding this city until further notice. If you do visit, taking a pre-booked taxi or using Uber is essential if straying from these two neighborhoods during day or night and extreme precautions should be taken when walking around the city. Read more safety information here .

A key stop for Pacific maritime trade on the way to or from Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, the city oozes character with its turn-of-the-century architecture and ubiquitous street art.

The skyline of colourful Valparaiso, an easy day trip from Santiago, Chile

While on your Santiago to Valparaíso day trip, don’t miss out on an outstanding seafood feast, exploring the eclectic home of Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, or wandering street art-lined streets with seaside vistas.

For more details and to plan a weekend trip from Santiago to Valparaíso, check out our guide to the best things to do in Valparaíso .

7. Head to Viña del Mar to escape the summer heat

Just to the northeast of Valparaíso sits its more modern neighbor, Viña del Mar . With its long stretch of sandy beach, tree-lined boulevards, cool ocean breeze, and pumping nightlife, Viña makes the perfect getaway from the summer heat of Santiago.

While visiting Chile’s summer playground, you’ll have the option to surf or sunbathe at Reñaca Beach , and, of course. eat some of the best seafood on the continent. For board rentals, head north up the coast to Concón , where Sacando Quillas offers surf classes and full gear rental. Bear in mind that the water is cold, but wetsuits are available for hire.

8. Go whitewater rafting on the Maipo River

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the Maipo River offers excellent whitewater rafting adventures all year long. The rapids are Class IV during the summer (November through February), and Class III the rest of the year.

Cascadas del Ánimas operates rafting trips on a breathtaking stretch of the river. The company has highly-reputable guides, and rafters of all levels, from beginners to advanced, are encouraged to sign up. The descent takes around an hour and covers six miles (10km) of the Maipo River.

9. Explore the mountains of Santiago on horseback

One of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences in Chile is exploring the countryside while riding a horse. Horses in Chile tend to be smaller and nimbler than those in North America or Europe, which makes them ideal for the narrow trails that wind up the mountains.

An experienced outfit specializing in horseback excursions from the eastern outskirts of Santiago is Cabalgatas Santiago . Their professional guides offer many options, including two-hour tours into the foothills, polo classes, and horse archery lessons. Cabalgatas is located on the eastern edge of the city, a half-hour from the city center.

10. Enjoy views of the Andes while soaking in thermal springs

Another popular destination for both locals and travelers is thermal baths in the upper reaches of El Cajón del Maipo. These river-adjacent springs consist of pools rich in sodium, iodine, and potassium, and the baths vary between 28-55ºC (82-131ºF).

The startlingly blue water of the Termas Valle de Colina in the Cajon del Maipo and a worthy day trip from Santiago

Many enjoy the baths for their therapeutic value to rejuvenate skin and alleviate arthritis, while the dramatic mountain scenery only adds to the experience. The two most popular springs are Baños Morales and the more picturesque Termas Valle de Colina , the latter of which is home to nine pastel-blue geothermal springs. It’s worth noting that the baths close for the winter months (June through August).

To visit the Termas Valle de Colina and explore El Cajón del Maipo as part of a tour from Santiago, visit with local operator Eco Chile Travel (and get a 5% discount if you book via this link ).

11. Trek in the Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo

Just above the city to the south is a wonderful escape from the urban bustle of Santiago. La Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo (Clarillo River National Reserve) covers a large tract of land with a stunning assortment of flora and fauna, including cacti, falcons, condors, and mountain lions, although the latter avoid people and are rarely spotted.

The park is excellent for a hike without the crowds of some of the other nearby reserves. It’s also a great place for a barbecue, with grills on site for self-caterers.

Getting around the Santiago region

The area surrounding Santiago is well-serviced by bus. Private operators Turbus and Pullman offer frequent service to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, and leave from the Terminal Alameda bus station in the city centre.

To reach the ski resorts, Ski Total offers transport from their office or pick-up service from your accommodation.

For access to vineyards in the Casablanca Valley, buses leave from Terminal Sur bus station (a block west of the Alameda station) to the town of Casablanca. From there a short taxi ride will get you to the local wineries.

The most convenient way to get around Central Chile is to hire a car , either from the airport or in the city center. A 4WD vehicle is advised for dirt roads or heading to the ski resorts in winter. Chile has a zero-tolerance policy for drink driving, so make sure to plan ahead for trips to the vineyards.

Chile is a big country with a lot to offer, from the Atacama Desert in the north to Patagonia in the south. For information beyond the best day trips from Santiago covering the rest of this amazing country, take a look at our guides to the other regions .

Hi, for number 11 you talk about Reserva Nacional Río Clarill but the link is for a website about Santuario de la Naturaleza el Arrayán - these seem to be different places? I could be wrong but Google maps suggests so. We're looking at wine tours and white water rafting so thanks for the recommendations!

Sorry Ren, yes they are different places. I've just amended the link! Steph

Good recommendations, except Valparaiso, which, in my opinion, is not worthwhile the visit. I am Chilean and live in Santiago and I know all those places pretty well. Especially recommendable are the mountain spots in the Cajón del Maipo, Portillo, Farellones and El Clarillo. The latter had (I suppose it still has) an impressive trout fishing.

Thanks for your recommendations Fernando! Steph

New to TTG?

Endless journeys finishing with wine: how to sell chile to millennials.

Cristóbal Benitez, national director of Sernatur, the government institution promoting tourism to Chile, gives an update on the destination’s targets markets, while Audley Travel shares news of its incredible new journey

eCard

Can you explain more about Chile’s new ’Endless Journey’ strategy?

Leveraging our new Infinite Journey marketing strategy, we want to focus on Chile’s communities, where experiences are brought to the spotlight through local people. We will also continue to position Chile as a nature destination by championing sustainability and diversity that can be found across the country.

Why is Chile a good choice for outdoor adventure clients?

Chile is an ideal choice for outdoor adventures due to its diverse geography, ranging from the rugged Andes mountains to the pristine coastline and otherworldly landscapes. Specific examples of outdoor adventures include trekking in Torres del Paine National Park, where clients can embark on multi-day treks amidst stunning glaciers, turquoise lakes, and towering granite peaks. In the north, visitors can experience the otherworldly beauty of the Atacama Desert through activities such as sand boarding, stargazing, and exploring geysers and salt flats. We even have wilderness expeditions in remote regions of Patagonia, where adventure seekers can hike through ancient forests, kayak among fjords, and witness breathtaking wildlife encounters.

Where’s recommended for stargazing in Chile?

Chile offers unrivalled opportunities for astro tourism, thanks to its clear skies, low light pollution, and world-class observatories. Some of the best places for stargazing and astronomy experiences include Elqui Valley. Located in northern Chile, the valley is renowned for its clear skies and observatories, offering visitors the chance to witness mesmerising celestial phenomena. The Atacama Desert also boasts some of the clearest and darkest skies on Earth, making it an ideal destination for stargazing tours and astronomical observatories.

Cristobal Benitez

Which markets are contributing the biggest growth to Chile’s tourism industry?

According to data prior to the Covid pandemic, solo travellers represented 39% of foreign tourists, while couples represented 33% of the total. Regarding ages, the majority were between 25 and 39 years old.

How is Santiago, Chile’s capital, evolving as a tourist destination?

Santiago is becoming a dynamic and cosmopolitan tourist destination, with developments in hotels, dining, neighbourhoods, and cultural attractions. San Cristobal hill offers amazing views of the city, and is a popular location to walk and practise sports; the historical quarter is a great place to enjoy the city’s architecture and learn more about its history; the Bicentenario Park is somewhere to relax with its small lakes and picnic areas; and the tourist neighbourhoods of Barrio Lastarria and Barrio Italia are charming to explore. Furthermore, agents might want to recommend our wine experiences. The vineyard area near Santiago has more than 35 vineyards open to tourists, where you find wine tasting, bicycle and horseback riding activities, and local events, such as the Fiesta de la Vendimia, at the end of the harvest season (March/April).

What’s the state of play with regard to airlift from the UK?

Currently from the UK there are four direct flights per week with British Airways from Heathrow to Santiago and multiple other routes via Madrid, Sao Paulo or Bogota with Iberia, Latam and Avianca.

How can agents improve their knowledge of Chile?

For general destination information, agents can visit chile.travel/en or to watch some interesting content, visit @ chiletravel on YouTube. This year Chile Travel has planned a number of activities to help agents build their knowledge of the destination.

Explora Lodge

This year Audley Travel has added Explora’s new Travesia journey to its Latin American programme. The itinerary connects Chile’s Atacama Desert to the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia, traversing one of the remotest regions on the planet.

Clients travel in a 4x4 with their own expert guide and local driver, staying two nights in Explora’s Atacama lodge, one night each at different mountain lodges, and two nights at Jirira lodge in the Uyuni salt flats. These are peaceful bases that have been established in partnership with local families, and designed to blend in with their natural surroundings as much as possible.

The seven-day private journey explores three different altitude zones, and the schedule is designed around clients’ choices and preferences – hiking, overland van trips and cycling are all on offer, as well as stargazing opportunities.

Laura del Pino, senior product executive for Chile at Audley Travel, said: “Atacama and Torres are the top-selling areas in Chile for Audley, and we continue to expand our product offering there, as well as elsewhere in the country. At the top end of the market, it was great to see Explora’s new Travesia journey launch – it’s an excellent option for our clients who want to explore from this area.”

Andy Tanaka, Audley Travel specialist for Chile adds: “The visibility of the stars [in northern Chile] is truly stunning. You can really see the subtleties of the galaxies, and when combined with telescopes you get a sense of the vast nature and beauty of space.”

Book it: A 12-day tailor-made trip with Audley Travel costs from £13,500 per person (based on two travelling) with three nights in Santiago and six nights with Explora. Price includes flights, transfers, accommodation on a B&B basis in Santiago and fully inclusive with Explora; audleytravel.com/chile

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Santiago.

On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel in Santiago. Afternoon at leisure.

This morning you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Calama. Here you will be met and taken to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. Once settled in you will head out on your first Atacama excursion, to explore the stunning Moon and Death Valleys. This excursion ends just after sunset, leaving you time to explore the restaurants of San Pedro town.

Today you will travel out of the town to explore the Altiplanic Lagoons and local salt flats, home to countless flamingos and a surprising amount of other wildlife too.

An early rise will see you head up to approximately 4,000m above sea level where, before dawn, it will be below freezing. From here you will witness the sun rise over the Andes as the Tatio Geysers spurt around you.An early start means you will be back at your hotel at lunch time leaving you free to relax by the pool or visit the wonderful museum in San Pedro.

Transfer back to the airport in Calama for your flights south to Puerto Montt in the Lake District where a driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel in the lakeside town of Puerto Varas. Explore the town this afternoon and perhaps have dinner over looking the lake with views of the mighty Osorno Volcano.

Enjoy a full day excursion the Osorno Volcano and Vincente Perez national park. Or, if you are bit more active, we can arrange for you to go rafting, kayaking or cycling in the region.

Something a little different today will see you visit Senda Romahue. This is a family run ecological centre that show cases local flora and acts as a rescue home for local fauna as well. You will be shown around by a family member and your visit will contribute to maintaining the slice of tranquility.

Transfer back to Puerto Montt for your flight to Punta Arenas (or possibly Puerto Natales if schedules allow) from where you will travel north to the breathtaking mountains that make up Torres del Paine National Park.

Excursions from your lodge in Torres del Paine National Park are all included in your stay. Each evening you will meet with your guides to discuss the option for the following day. This may not be the most economic way to see the park but we believe that it is the best value and ensures that you get the very best out of your time there.

Excursions from your lodge in Torres del Paine National Park.

Travel back to Puerto Natales in time for your flight to Santiago, where you spend the night. As flights often arrive late we do make use of the airport hotel, but this may well depend on the times of your onward journey.

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Arrive home today to complete your journey.
