In our 10K steps series, we’ve asked writers for the best places to get in your steps while enjoying city sights, favorite routes and some secret detours. Here, James March leads us down and around LA’s Sunset Strip – an infamous party zone that’s also surprisingly lovely.

“Drive west on Sunset, to the sea,” sings Donald Fagan on Steely Dan’s 1980 track “ Babylon Sisters .” Over a slinky, organ-led beat, Fagan’s drawl evokes LA excess – and nowhere epitomizes the city’s kitschy allure more than the Sunset Strip. 

Though it stretches a full 23 miles from downtown Los Angeles to the Californian coast, the iconic Sunset Blvd is largely associated with a small, 1.7-mile section often called the Sunset Strip , which runs through West Hollywood . Things are more genteel now since the days when Guns ’n’ Roses et al threw TVs from hotel windows – look out for the cute little delivery robots that have been rolling around of late near Sunset and Holloway – but the glamor is still here in spades, with WeHo (as locals it) playing host to LA’s hottest restaurants and coolest hotels. 

In some ways, WeHo’s streets seem more “LA” than anywhere else in town – think cartoonishly skinny coconut palms, sweating joggers, pocket-sized dogs, silent Teslas and droning helicopters above. But for a famously car-centric city, the city of West Hollywood (it’s independent of the City of Los Angeles) is also walkable, with curving avenues and gentle backstreets that feel vaguely European. In other words, perfect for a stroll. 

With plenty of seductive stops along the way, there’s a lot to take in. So we recommend this tour, which features Sunset Blvd’s greatest hits alongside some catchier, deeper cuts. And since this is somewhere that gets its biggest kicks when evening falls, we suggest starting this walk after lunch. 

Where to start: Chateau Marmont

If it’s good enough for Anthony Bourdain, it’s good enough for me. Tony’s favorite LA hotel was the Chateau Marmont – and its turreted white perch high above Sunset and Marmont Lane, at the eastern end of the Sunset Strip, is a striking starting point for our walk. Completed in 1929, it’s been an exclusive and at times notorious address for LA’s glitterati – and you’ll need a pretty hefty bank account to check in here for a night or two.

Need some fuel for the walk west? Laid-back Mexican joint Pinches Taco sits on the south side of Sunset Blvd in the shadow of the Chateau Marmont. The indulgent breakfast burrito here ($11.25) might become your new favorite dish.

Explore both classic and cool new stays 

Speaking of hotels, some of West Hollywood’s most iconic properties flank Sunset as it gently curves downhill – so make the short walk west from Pinches Taco and into West Hollywood. Rising like an art deco wedding cake, the 1931 Sunset Tower is perhaps the most picturesque example to explore (especially its sleek mahogany bar), while across the street the Andaz was once a wild rock ’n’ roll haunt and Led Zeppelin’s preferred area residence (they sometimes booked out six whole floors). Inside the lobby, you’ll find large blown-up images of Robert Plant, Jimi Hendrix and other rock stars who once lived it up here.

The walk: Cross back onto the south side of Sunset and continue west, past sparkling new additions like The Pendry and 1 Hollywood West . A fine budget option, the music-themed Hotel Ziggy has live gigs and DJs playing in the evenings, while its quirky B-side Pizza offers indulgent slices and full-size pies. Hang a left on La Cienega and head down the steep street until you reach Santa Monica Blvd. 

Stop for a hot dog at a food truck like no other

An LA institution since 1946 and a fine example of 20th-century novelty architecture, Tail o’ the Pup is a colorful hot dog stand in the shape of an actual hot dog. Sure, it sounds silly – but in a city that occasionally takes itself a little too seriously, maybe a hot dog from a hot dog–shaped joint is just what you need. There’s also a buzzy new speakeasy tiki bar upstairs behind a certain doorway (but I didn’t tell you that).

The walk: If you’re interested in seeing more of LA on two wheels, then pop in next door to Bikes and Hikes and book one of their superb guided e-bike tours.

The quiet backstreets of WeHo are a serene pleasure. Cross Santa Monica Blvd onto W Knoll Dr: the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Chamberlain Hotel is not only a fabulously hidden stay, its corner location also offers a wonderful tree-framed view of the multicolored Pacific Design Center . Stroll up past the sweet pink geraniums on Westmount Dr, cross over Holloway Dr and give your thighs a workout tackling the steep Alta Loma Rd up to the Sunset Marquis. 

Drop by the ultimate music gallery

While the Sunset Marquis is iconic enough as it is, just to the right of the lobby is the Morrison Hotel Gallery , where a collection of the greatest rock and pop culture photography adorns the walls. Mötley Crüe in a soapy jacuzzi, the Rolling Stones dressed in drag, the Doors gazing through the window of the Morrison Hotel…the shots on display here are as cool as the hotel. And you’ll find even more images in the underpass between the pool and Cavatina restaurant. Just remember to keep it cool if Ringo Starr walks by. 

The walk: Head back up to Sunset and turn left (no more hills now, I promise). Mel’s Drive-In on the north side is one of LA’s last old-school diners (one that stays open 24/7 if you’re feeling peckish in the wee hours). Stroll down to the bizarre Rocky and Bullwinkle statue at the intersection of Sunset and Holloway, where the smell of cigar smoke might drift over from State Social House . Brunch hotspot Dialog Cafe is a five-star people-watching spot – so maybe take a coffee break here, before crossing Palm Ave toward Book Soup.

Dive into book heaven

Here since 1987, Book Soup smells like freshly printed pages; inside, you could easily lose yourself for an hour or two. The special section with books about and set in Los Angeles is particularly engrossing, while the fine selection of pop culture, architecture and LGBTIQ+ works is very on-brand for WeHo. Occupying a small cottage next door, hidden neighbor Mystery Pier deals only in first editions. Some of the astonishing titles on offer here include an 1816 printing of Jane Austen’s Emma and a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms from 1929.

The walk: The next two to three blocks heading west showcase some of the Sunset Strip’s most famous (and infamous) venues. So as the sun’s golden glow flares over Beverly Hills and day turns to evening, it’s really a case of picking your poison. Things kick off across Larrabee St, at Johnny Depp’s Viper Room , and stretch up past the neon-red Roxy to Lemmy’s famous old haunt The Rainbow .

Catch a live gig at a legendary venue

When the Doors were once the house band, you know the venue is worth a visit. Opened in 1964, the Whisky a Go Go was the first live music venue inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and its intimate stage still hosts gigs almost every night. There are a few leather booths with tables, though they’re often reserved – and anyway, the Whisky (as locals call it) is best experienced by grabbing a cold beer from the back bar and getting up close to the action. 

The walk: If you’re seeing the night out here or at one of Sunset’s other music venues, I don’t blame you; they’re all a blast. But if you want to end your evening on a lighter note, head back east on Sunset to The Comedy Store.

Bonus stop: Kick back with some late-night laughs

The laughs last late into the night at the legendary Comedy Store . Everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Richard Pryor has taken the mic here, and with three rooms to choose from, there’s plenty of choice if you’re booking last-minute. The Original Room’s “After 11pm Headliners” spot is the best show to see if you’re coming for some late-night yuks. A good tip is to check their Instagram page on the day, as secret headliners are often revealed there.

The 26 best and most iconic spots along the Sunset Strip

Its days of debauchery and seedy rock clubs may be behind it, but the Sunset Strip is still home to worthwhile landmarks

The Sunset Strip isn’t exactly the center of counterculture it once was; seedy rock clubs have since become respectable music venues and sleazy party centers have given way to office buildings and high-end hotels . While we won’t argue if the newer, cleaner version of the Strip is better or worse, it’s certainly different —and definitely still merits a visit, particularly late into the evening. While its touristy landmarks certainly aren’t the only worthwhile  things to do in West Hollywood , no visit to WeHo would be complete without a stop on the Sunset Strip.

Starting on its western end and working our way east, these are the Sunset Strip’s most iconic landmarks—plus a mix of superlative and lesser-known spots to grab something to eat and drink.

What to see and do on the Sunset Strip (ordered from west to east)

Boa steakhouse.

Already a bit of a scene for the past two decades, BOA became one of  the  hangouts for Gen Z influencers and their frenzied followers a few years ago. But don’t let that keep you away: This sultry, club-like steakhouse  is actually popular for a reason, as its craveable signature dishes and expanded seafood menu are quite good.

Bootsy Bellows

This nightclub on the western edge of the Sunset Strip really kind of sums up the recent history of the West Hollywood district: Bootsy Bellows opened in 2012 as a sort of dark, velvety hideout for Tinseltown types that became synonymous with burlesque shows, costume parties and dinner theater spectacles. Now though, it’s flipped into a green, pink and gold Rat Pack-era lounge that looks straight out of Palm Springs—albeit one with a much, much younger and more crowded clientele.

Equal parts celebrity hotspot and exceptional fine dining destination, this ultra-stylish Sunset Strip hotel eatery offers flawless "vegetable-forward" cuisine and an air of sweeping, expensive romance that’ll make you forget all about the fact you’ll have to pay $18 for the EDITION's valet parking, if not more. Here, hosts in slinky white dresses and kitten-heeled boots will usher you to the plant-filled, warm-hued dining room—and the overall effect is downright cinematic. Every dish that arrives dazzles here, from the must-order milk bread topped with caramelized beefsteak tomatoes to the skirt steak, which comes with garlic confit and an exquisite red salt. Larger groups can splurge on the eye-poppingly expensive gooseberry phyllo pizza drizzled with aged balsamic dinner; the tableside preparation and final product make it well worth the price. Night + Market WeHo

Los Angeles is home to the best Thai food in America, and Night + Market is easily one of the best Thai restaurants in L.A. Chef-owner Kris Yenbamroong serves a menu like none other in town, inspired equally by the night-market street foods of Bangkok and the rustic hillbilly cooking of rural northern Thailand.

Rainbow Bar & Grill

Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe met here in 1952 when it was the Vincente Minnelli–owned Villa Nova restaurant. Steps from the Roxy, the list of stars who have drank here is endless but includes Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Elton John, members of Led Zeppelin and the Who, and Lemmy Kilmister, the Motörhead frontman who was a regular at the bar’s video poker machine.

In its half-century history as a Sunset Strip stalwart, the Roxy has been both a major player (hosting early Springsteen and Guns N’ Roses shows) and a disappointing has-been (insert name of horrible ’80s hair band here). Now that the Roxy has settled comfortably into middle age, the club has thankfully swung back in the other direction with consistently strong bookings that traverse metal, punk, indie, singer-songwriters and the occasional local up-and-comer.

Rock and Reilly’s

Rock and Reilly’s has maintained a frat house status among West Hollywood watering holes, particularly for its epic St. Patrick’s Day block parties. But it’s also the perfect pub to partake in casual whiskey tastings or to make friends at the bar during a crowded Saturday night.

Whisky a Go Go

The Doors were once the house band at the Whisky, until the owner objected to the lyrics of “The End” and banned the group. Its place in Sunset Strip lore can’t be denied, but these days the music comes mostly from classic-rock tribute acts (Led Zepagain, anyone?) and young bands of the punk and metal variety, few of whom you’ll ever hear of again.

The Viper Room

This Sunset Strip spot can trace its history back decades, but it was actor Johnny Depp’s investment in the ailing club in 1993 that put it on the map. Johnny Cash played here, and Hunter Thompson drank at the bar. While it no longer draws as many famous attendees or acts (perhaps because Depp is no longer affiliated with the club) it’s still a great intimate room to see a show.

This long-standing indie book shop has been a staple amidst L.A. bibliophiles since 1975. The variety of stock at Book Soup is huge and diverse, even if the space itself is a little squeezed. It’s also a regular stop on literary luminaries’ book tours.

Sunsets can be fun for the whole family when you watch them from the Santa Monica Pier’s amusement park. While you can certainly see the horizon change colors from just about everywhere on the dock, except the bathrooms, the best view is from 130 feet above it atop the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Once the sky has gone dark, riders are treated to a second light show when more than 174,000 energy-efficient LEDs blink to life and dance on the ocean’s surface below.

Cap off a visit to one of Los Angeles’ most iconic tourist attractions (and filming locations) by taking in the sunset from its mountaintop perch in Griffith Park. With the city far below, bucolic splendor at your back and unobstructed sightlines from downtown to the Pacific, it’s great for escaping the hustle and bustle and for a cheap date idea as access to the 1935 observatory and its telescopes is free. Complimentary Wi-Fi allows visitors to post FOMO-inducing photos in real time.

Located on a strip of sand locally known as Billionaire’s Beach, this chic oceanside boutique offers several options for staring at the sun. Arrive early to score a window seat although nothing beats a bench by a fire pit on a crisp night. (Pro tip: LA sunsets are often more brilliant when skies have been cleared of clouds and haze by rain and wind.)

Since 2014, dusk devotees have had another reason to park themselves on this 288-acre piece of Playa del Rey coastline . A 70-foot wooden boat was marooned on shore. Unable to be removed, it has become an ever-changing mural tagged by graffiti artists and adds a slice of urban life to your sunset shots. Plus, there are fire rings, picnic facilities, a very long biking/jogging path, volleyball nets, jetties to fish off of and bird-watching of the federally protected western snowy plover to fill the hours before the sun says goodnight.

Savor fine art, 360-degree scenery, architect Richard Meier’s gleaming travertine masterpiece and spectacular sunsets while wandering the grounds of this top-notch free museum set on a peak in the Santa Monica Mountains. If rare poor weather forces you inside, head to the paintings galleries on the upper levels of the North, South, East and West Pavilions as they all feature interiors naturally lit through glass walls, allowing you to glimpse the sunset from indoors. The Roman gardens at its sister museum in Malibu, the Getty Villa, also boast a great end-of-day vantage point.

Sink into the velvety emerald cushions while the sun sinks behind Century City’s skyscrapers creating a color palette that matches your spiced pineapple mai tai or tuna sashimi with tropical fruit. 

High in the hills above Burbank with panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley and downtown LA, this historic haunt went through an extensive $10 million remodel, adding the intimate Green Room bar, mid-century modern flair, a meat aging room with walls made of Himalayan pink salt and picture windows that open fully to create indoor-outdoor flow. The dining deck is the optimal choice at twilight, but don’t fret if it is full as the multi-level design means there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

After the sun hits the horizon, ride down the 45-foot all-glass slide attached to the side of the building nearly 1,000 feet up if you dare.

8 places in L.A. to catch the sunset before it gets dark absurdly early

Earlier and earlier comes the darkness as we hurtle through fall toward year’s end. There’s no stopping this, so you might as well enjoy the light while you can.

This week, before diving into your evening plans, take a moment to watch the sunset.

Once the seasonal time change takes effect Sunday, Nov. 6, sunsets will jump to before 5 p.m., then edge even earlier. For the first half of December, we’ll have the earliest sunsets of the calendar year, between 4:43 and 4:45 p.m.

This troubles many people , prompting persistent arguments about daylight saving time. But it also gives you a good reason to start taking a late lunch (well, a very late lunch). If you time it right on a weekday afternoon, you can race to the rooftop bar at the Hotel Erwin in Venice, order a beer, cocktail or snack at discounted happy-hour rates, and have that refreshment in hand when the sun vanishes.

Then, of course, you can start every Californian’s favorite argument — the one about the green flash .

And as a bonus, I should also mention the Los Angeles City Hall Observation Deck has reopened. It’s on the 27th floor of L.A. City Hall, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and free, with open-air views in every direction. To get up there, start at 201 N. Main St. Bring proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative test.

Where can you find the best sunsets in Los Angeles ? The following list will help answer this question. All locations listed here have an unobstructed view of the sunset, making them perfect sunset spots in LA for taking memorable pictures or enjoying drinks with friends.

I lived in Los Angeles for nearly 5 years during college and made it my mission to explore this amazing city to its fullest. From the best sunsets in Los Angeles to the best hilltop viewpoints and more, there’s truly so much to discover.

Best Sunsets in Los Angeles over the City

Here are the best places to see the sunset in LA over the city. This includes parks, hills, and even rooftop bars that will give you a sunset view behind the city of Angels.

The Getty Museum is actually my favorite view in Los Angeles. The incredible architecture of this modern white stone museum is the perfect frame for an LA sunset view – or any view for that matter.

The Getty is close enough to the sea that you can see a little blue sliver of it from pretty much everywhere in the museum, but far enough away that you can ALSO catch glimpses of DTLA and all the Santa Monica mountains from here, too. This is the most central sunset view where you can see all parts of LA and amazing gardens and exhibits, too.

Griffith Observatory

The Griffith Observatory is one of the best places to watch a sunset in LA as well as one of the most instagrammable places in LA too! From this location, you can see the entire city light up as the sun goes down. There’s a planetarium which you should definitely visit before sunset, and all kinds of fascinating astronomy info.

The Observatory is open until midnight, so you can enjoy the sunset and then take in the views of LA all night long. This site is perfect for photography and is a favorite among LA locals.

Barnsdall Park

Another great place to see the sunset over LA is Barnsdall Park . This LA sunset spot offers a beautiful view of Hollywood and downtown LA, as well as Griffith Park and the Dodgers Stadium in the distance.

Located in the East Hollywood Hills, Barnsdall park enjoys a 180-degree panoramic view of the city, so you can catch a sunset from all angles. Additionally, the park offers a  variety of events throughout the year, such as yoga and concerts on Sundays.

The Hollywood Sign

One of the classic best places to watch the sunset in LA is, of course, the Hollywood Sign itself! Facing directly towards Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard, the Hollywood sign is as classic LA as it gets.

You can hike up to the Hollywood sign easily, as many Angelenos do on a daily basis. You can choose to watch the sunset from a viewpoint below the sign, where the golden hour will perfectly illuminate the famous letters, or you can hike all the way up behind the sign to watch the land turn pink and orange below the larger-than-life letters below you.

Echo Park Lake

Echo Park is my favorite hidden gem in LA and a beautiful green haven in the middle of the concrete jungle. You’d hardly expect to see a grassy green park surrounding a big blue lake with fountains just outside downtown LA, but you can find that in Echo Park.

Position yourself on the east side of the lake to catch a Los Angeles sunset over the water – it might not be the ocean, but in this area, the lake works just fine. Echo Park has some of the best sunset views in LA and is the perfect spot to go on a walk or have a yummy street hot dog watching the many geese.

Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is a great place to catch the sunset if you’re looking for something more rural and serene. Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is a glorious park that provides stunning views over Los Angeles from the southernmost point in Culver City. I consider it one of the best hidden gems in Los Angeles!

This is one of my other favorite LA viewpoints as it seems unexpected to have a hilltop viewpoint from the south, with views from DTLA across the mountains to the ocean. If you’re looking to take your breath away then this spot will do it for sure. The unique perspective allows people taking the elevator up top to see the whole of the LA basin before it slips into night.

Korean Bell of Friendship

The Korean Bell of Friendship is a unique spot to watch the sunset in LA. This location offers beautiful views of the city, as well as the Pacific Ocean. The bell was originally gifted from South Korea to the people of Los Angeles in 1976, and it has become a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. 

The Korean Bell of Friendship is not only a symbol of peace but also an instrument that can be heard from miles away. The massive bronze bell housed in Angel’s Gate Park sounds so beautiful when it rings thanks to its intricate design. It makes for a great sunset spot because it’s not as crowded as some of the other locations on this list.

Perch Bar DTLA

If you want to have a drink with your Los Angeles sunset, Perch Bar is definitely the spot for you. Located on a rooftop smack dab in the middle of Downtown, you can get views over the whole concrete jungle to the hills.

They have everything from signature cocktails to classic beers and wines, as well as delicious snacks to eat while the sun goes down. Make sure to bring your camera as this place is the perfect ‘classic LA’ photo spot.

Hilltop Park Signal Hill

If you find yourself in south LA and still want to race to a sunset viewpoint, check out Hilltop Park on Signal Hill. Located between the 405 and downtown Long Beach, this small park packs a lot of punch in terms of views.

You’ll have views from the huge port ships and bridges of San Pedro to the Long Beach bay, and a sunset somewhere over the hills of Palos Verdes. There are also some hiking trails around Signal Hill that give a small release from the big city on this little hill.

Elysian Park

Elysian Park is right next to the Dodgers stadium, up on the hill. This perfect LA sunset location has views not only over the stadium but over the hills to the skyline of Downtown LA.

You can take lots of walks and hikes in this deceivingly large park and see the golden haze descend over LA in the evening time. Find the famous ‘secret swing’ here for one of the best photo spots in all of LA!

Best Sunsets in Los Angeles Over the Ocean

Here are the best places to watch the sunset in Los Angeles over the ocean. These sunset spots are beaches (because pretty much every beach has an amazing sunset view in California – gotta love the West Coast) or hills overlooking the sea too. You;re guaranteed to find peace and tranquility in these spots!

Manhattan Beach Pier

If you’re looking for a place to watch the sunset with an ocean view, look no further than the Manhattan Beach Pier. This pier offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and is a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike.

The pier is also home to restaurants and bars, so you can enjoy a drink or dinner while watching the sunset. The Manhattan Beach pier is especially beautiful at night when all of the lights are shining and reflecting off the water. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for an incredible ocean view in one of LA’s smaller and cozier neighborhoods.

Point Dume is a long point in Malibu where the coast changes direction around a big rocky and luscious bluff. There are plenty of walking and hiking trails here, and even beautiful yellow flowers in the springtime.

Try spending the day at Little Dume beach, which is a smaller and lesser-known Malibu beach, and then walking along Big Dume beach and over the point to watch the sunset on the bluffs or at tiny Pirate’s Cove beach, which faces perfectly west towards the sunset.

Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier has been a traditional spot to take pictures of sunsets since it was built back in 1909 . This location provides beautiful ocean views from either side of the pier – you can sit at one end or walk all the way down to watch the sunset from both sides.

You can jump on the Ferris wheel or any of the Santa Monica Pier rides for a touristy but fun sunset activity. Walk the boardwalk afterward and do some Los Angeles people watching. The surrounding area also offers many restaurants and shops within walking distance.  

The Venice Canals

Okay this might now bw a proper LA sunset over the ocean, but it’s a magical sunset over the most unique body of water Los Angeles can offer! I lived in LA for a few years before I realized that there were actually canals in Venice Beach, complete with boats sailing through them and with multi-million-dollar homes bordering them.

The Venice Beach canals are one of the most unique plcesi n LA for sure, and definitely worth visiting especially for sunset. You can see the colors of the sky reflecting on the calm water in the canals, and have a walk around the pathways too. Hopefully you can find parking! 😉

For a perfect LA sunset over the ocean, with a drink in hand, and over the Venice basketball and skate parks, head to High Rooftop Bar in Venice Beach. It’s located on the roof of the Hotel Erwin. This spot is the most centrally located view in Venice, and will really give you that LA vibe.

The bar unsurprisingly gets more crowded at sunset, so arrive early to get the best corner tables right over the Venice beach boardwalk. They even offer blankets and heaters in the winter so you can stay to watch the crazy California sunset colors after the sun dips below the horizon.

El Matador State Beach

If you’re looking for a more secluded sunset spot in LA to watch the sunset, then El Matador State Beach might be perfect for you. This beach is located in Malibu and is known for its dramatic cliffs and rock formations.

El Matador State Beach is well down below the ground level. It looks especially surreal during sunset when the sky showcases a beautiful blend of hues of purple, red and blue. Bring a picnic and some blankets for a magical moment.

Terranea Resort Palos Verdes

Terranea Resort is one of Palos Verdes’ most famous resorts, offering tons of villas, condos, golf courses, and hotel amenities right on the rocks cliffs of Palos Verdes. There are walking trails through the brush all around the resort, so you can explore whether you are staying here or not!

This area has tons of hidden coves and smaller beaches that are waiting to be discovered. You can even go kayaking or scuba diving as part of the resort’s activities.

I love Palos Verdes because it doesn’t even feel like Los Angeles at all; it feels like you;ve left the city and arrived in a hilly horse country far, far away. It’s the perfect break from the city with amazing views, a slower-paced lifestyle, and sunset views of course!

It’s a hiker’s heaven for a reason and while you may have to wait in line for the perfect snap, it’s well worth it. The magical swirls of pink, blue and orange of an L.A. sunset are absolutely arresting and the views make everything around you go quiet. If you’re still not convinced, you could always pay a visit to the vast Trebek Open Space nearby.

Stand at the most southwesterly point of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and marvel at one of the region’s coastal jewels as a golden light illuminates the rugged shores and shimmers across the Pacific Ocean. This white beacon makes for a perfect photo-op, especially when a storm looms above.

Cruise along the Pacific Coast Highway and park alongside fellow sungazers for the most magical hour of the day. Stunning sunset colors will bounce off the bonnets of classic California rides as the waves crash on the shores just in front of the parking lot at Royal Palms Beach.

The historic district turns into Disneyland as soon as the sun nears the horizon. There are quaint bridges, palms, and lush overgrowth line the edges of the canals and the glassy waterways mirror the beautiful palette of the sky.

7 Under-the-Radar Spots in LA to Enjoy a Spectacular Sunset

The Greater LA area offers a plethora of incredible viewpoints to catch a spectacular SoCal sunset, but urban spatial restrictions combined with this densely populated region of people mean that few of them truly offer the seclusion and open space of an intimate sunset experience.

From Culver City and Hollywood to the South Bay and DTLA, here are seven under-the-radar spots in LA that you’ve probably not heard of where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset.

1. Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes

Located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Terranea Resort encompasses 102 acres of sprawling seaside grounds with unparalleled Pacific Ocean views. The grounds include more than two miles of coastal trails that line the clifftops of the resort — and sunset is the ideal time to take a walk or hike while the waves crash below.

If you’re not much of an outdoors enthusiast, check out the property’s on-site bar and lounge, The Lobby Bar & Terrace which signifies the end of each day at sundown by ringing special crystal singing bowls — an ancient ritual known for healing and relaxation through sound and vibration. Since Terranea faces south on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, you can actually see the sun rise and set from a single location — if you’re up for the challenge of getting up early and staying up late (at least in summer).

After the sun officially goes down and the colors of the coastal skyline fade, you can retreat to Nelson’s, the property’s on-site eatery, to hear the endless waves crash against the seaside cliffs while you enjoy a fireside cocktail.

2. Hermosa Beach

Lesser known than the sands of northern neighbor Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach in the South Bay offers quintessentially California summer vibes and laid-back surfer attitude all-year-round.

Located between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, Hermosa is on the southern end of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail — also known as “The Strand” — a great place to bike or stroll along the sand.

During the day, you can check out the Hermosa Beach Pier to watch the surfers and SUPpers catch a wave. After the sun goes down, head over to a nearby restaurant such as Tower 12 , right off the pier, for a brew or a bite to eat. You’ll get beautiful views of the sun dipping into the ocean on the restaurant’s second story deck and wraparound, outdoor balcony.

3. Echo Park Lake

Echo Park is a neighborhood just outside of Downtown Los Angeles — it’s truly a hidden gem of culture, and home to many thriving artists, musicians, and writers.

Echo Park Lake and its perimeter walking path is the perfect spot for a romantic sunset picnic or gathering with friends, featuring incomparable views of the DTLA skyline (and free parking! — trust me, in LA this is huge).

Traditionally, you can pedal around the lake, avoiding the fountain in the middle, or stroll the perimeter of the water making sure to stop at the historic “Lady of the Lake” statue. Since you already have your camera to capture the sunset, here’s another photo opp. The statue was originally sculpted in the Art Deco style by Ada Mae Sharpless and gifted to the City of Los Angeles in 1935.

After pedaling up an appetite in the swan boats, check out the lake’s restored boathouse, Beacon Café , which offers drinks, pastries, and even avocado toasts for purchase.

4. Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook boasts panoramic views from 500 feet above Los Angeles in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood showcasing DTLA, Culver City (including the Sony Pictures Studios lot), and the California coastline.

You can choose to drive up to the top and pay $2 an hour to park while you visit the visitors center’s seasonal displays of native wildflowers, birding, and wildlife viewing. Exhibits tell stories of how this land, which had historically been drilled and exploited, has now become a symbol of restoration, conservation, and hope in the Greater LA region.

If you’re interested in getting your heart rate up, you can also park at the bottom of the hill and hike straight up the stairs (a well-known workout for Angeleno exercise enthusiasts) or hike up an adjacent trail which zigzags along the hillside to its peak.

Tip: If you want to get there in time for sunset, make sure to start at least an hour before sundown so that you can have enough time to enjoy the hike up.

5. Grand Park

Grand Park is a 12-acre outdoor space located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. It’s a hub of history, culture, and activism within the city. Directly connected to the artery of downtown LA transportation, Grand Avenue — and a stop on the LA Metro Red or Purple Line at Civic Center/Grand Park Station — Grand Park offers easy access to a plethora of open space. It’s also one of the prime local spots for friendly gatherings and sunset viewings.

There’s no shortage of spectacular viewpoints at Grand Park for you to celebrate a DTLA sunset.

The park is nestled between two architectural wonders — City Hall on one side and the Music Center on the other. At one end, there’s even a majestic, reconstructed 1960s-era fountain that was restored to shoot a 50-foot spray of water upward in the original fountain bowl.

6. Topanga Lookout Trailhead

The Topanga Lookout Trailhead is the start of a 2-mile out-and-back trail up on a saddle in the Santa Monica Mountains, 2,375 feet above the Pacific Ocean and just 3 miles off the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. You can check out the trail if you’d like, or you can just park the car near the trailhead for an idyllic place to watch the colors fade over the sea.

The sun will actually be setting in the valley behind you. This spot is so special, because you can watch the sun go down from the perspective of two different viewpoints on both sides of where you’re sitting. It’s the best of both worlds!

7. Lake Hollywood Park

Lake Hollywood Park is about as close as you can get to the famed Hollywood sign — without making a ton of effort — and is therefore frequented by both locals and LA visitors alike.

The open, grassy park space is a great place to take photos of this iconic international landmark and spend some leisure time enjoying the consistently perfect Los Angeles weather.

Traveling with your pup? Four-legged friends are welcome here. Bring a picnic blanket and a tasty dinner spread or, better yet, an aesthetically pleasing charcuterie (very “Angeleno”) for maximum evening enjoyment.

Located in San Pedro, many people aren’t aware of this historic landmark on top of a hill that on looks the ocean which makes it a perfect spot for sunset watching on a clear evening.

This beach isn’t for surfing or swimming because of the rocks but it makes for great silhouette shots during sunset.

The famous pier is where Route 66 ends and a lot of fun begins. Home to classic piers items like a ferris wheel overlooking the ocean and a vintage carousel and a collection of restaurants, this is pier is the perfect place to watch the sunset and have fun.

Bonus tip: go on Thursday evenings for the Twilight Concert series for an evening of music, fun and endless beach vibes.

11. Point Dume State Beach

Located off the coast of Malibu, this promontory point shoots out into the Pacific Ocean. This beach is also a popular filming location for grand scale movies but an even greater spot for watching the sunset.

Watching the sunset behind the hills and canyon is absolutely breathtaking. Just don’t stay out there too long because it gets dark real quick.

If you go a little north up the coast from the Manhattan Beach Pier you end up at El Porto, a popular surfing spot and location of numerous great white shark sightings (usually just juveniles) over the past few years. It’s also a great location to catch a sunset.

15. The LA Skyline from Elysian Park

If you didn’t know, Elysian Park is just beside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Going the various ends of the parks offers various views of LA from the DTLA skyline to Dodgers Stadium and the Hollywood Hills. It’s a great location for watching the sunset over Los Angeles.

16.  Levitated Mass at LACMA

LACMA is a must see when in L.A., at least check out Urban Lights and Levitated Mass which make for great pictures especially around sunset. Bonus tip, go on a Friday evening to attend the summertime Jazz concerts. Good music, art and sunsets…doesn’t get much better than that.

11 Best Sunset Hikes in Los Angeles 

Hiking in the evening is an excellent way to avoid hot weather and crowded trails, and it’s also one of the best ways to catch a great view of the sunset.

Whether you want to enjoy the illuminated cityscape or watch the sun sink below the horizon of the Pacific Ocean, here are 11 of the best sunset hikes in Los Angeles. 

The information in this guide is for informational purposes only. We use Gaia GPS for mobile devices and also bring high-quality printed topographic maps while in the backcountry, and recommend you do the same.

Ferndell to West Observatory Loop Trail 

Located in Griffith Park , this easy 2.6-mile loop begins on the Ferndell Trail before meeting up with the Lower West Observatory Trail. If you start about an hour before sundown you’ll be able to enjoy the lush canyon on your way up and watch the sunset over Los Angeles from the viewing areas near Griffith Observatory. Once it’s dark you can head into the observatory to peek through the free public telescopes or simply enjoy the panoramic views of the city lights below. To complete the loop, head back on the Upper West Observatory Trail and keep an eye out for the iconic Hollywood sign on your way down.

Forrestal Reserve Loop 

Set in Forestal Reserve near Rancho Palos Verdes, this 2.7-mile loop takes you through the hills overlooking the ocean. Although the hike presents a moderate level of difficulty with several inclines, there are also a few vista points and benches along the way if you need a quick break to enjoy the view. The lack of shade makes it an excellent choice for an evening hike, and if you time it right you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. The gate to the parking lot is locked an hour after sunset, so be sure to park on the street if you plan on staying longer.

Angel’s Point

Angel’s Point in Elysian Park is a great place to catch the skyline of Downtown LA backlit by the sunset, and the 0.6-mile out-and-back trail from Academy Road is short and sweet. You also have the option to drive up the hill to Angel’s Point Road, and from there it’s just a short walk to the vista. Once you’re at the top you’ll have views of Dodger Stadium and Downtown LA as well as the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory. If you stay after dark on a Friday during baseball season you’ll also get to see the Friday Night Fireworks set off at Dodger Stadium.

Runyon Canyon Trail

Runyon Canyon Park boasts some of the most popular hiking trails in Los Angeles, and there are several options of varying length and difficulty. Runyon Canyon Trail is a moderate 2.7-mile loop that’s a great option for a sunset hike because the path is wide and well-trafficked. It winds through the Santa Monica Mountains south of the Hollywood Hills, and there’s enough of an incline to make it a workout. Once you’re at the top, you’ll see several benches and picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy the expansive views of the city below.

Lonesome Pine Hike

The hike up to Lonesome Pine from Lake Hollywood Drive is a quick but strenuous out-and-back trail that’s a 1.6-mile round-trip. The trail’s namesake comes from the single pine tree standing at the summit. On your way up you’ll see sweeping vistas of the San Fernando Valley, and the setting sun behind the Santa Monica Mountains gives way to gorgeous views of the twinkling city lights below. Because the trail is steep, make sure to bring a good headlamp or flashlight if you’ll be hiking after dark.

Ascot Hills Trail

Located in East LA, Ascot Hills Park features rolling hills and city views that rival those from Griffith Park and Elysian Park, but with less crowded trails. The 2.1-mile Ascot Hills Trail is a loop that takes you around the perimeter of the park, where you’ll see many different wildflowers in the early spring. At the top of the trail, you’ll be able to see the setting sun illuminate the surrounding hills as well as the LA skyline to the southwest. The parking lot is locked at dusk, so park on the street if you’re staying for the sunset.

Bluff Cove to Trail 

Bluff Cove Trail is a 1.1-mile out-and-back trail that brings you to terrific views of the Pacific Ocean and down to a rocky beach. Located in Palos Verdes, California, the trail is popular for sunset hikes and a side spur offers access to Flat Rock Point a rugged point with many tidepools to explore at low tide. If you are feeling ambitious and want to extend your hike, you can continue south along the beach and follow the coast for 1.5 miles to Lunada Bay. At the top of Lunada Bay is a point with a shipwreck – keep an eye out for the beached remains of the SS Dominator, a freighter that ran aground in 1961.

Escondido Falls Trail

Set in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains, the Escondido Falls Trail is a 3.7-mile out-and-back trail that leads up to the tallest waterfall in the mountains. The falls are fullest in the late winter and early spring after the rain, but the trail is accessible year-round. Start out early so that you have plenty of time to explore the falls while it’s light because the rocks can be slippery and the trail gets steeper near the end. When you’re heading back you’ll catch glimpses of Malibu below, and you can enjoy views of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean.

Point Dume Trail

Located near Malibu, the 1.4-mile out-and-back Point Dume Trail offers unparalleled ocean scenery as well as stunning wildflower blooms in the spring. With only 347 feet in elevation gain, it’s a quick and easy hike with rewarding views. If you’re lucky you’ll see seals and dolphins in the water below, and on clear days you can see Catalina Island off in the distance. The sweeping views make it excellent for watching the sunset, and the trail is easy to navigate after dark.

Los Liones Trail to Paseo Miramar Lookout

Although the famous Los Liones Trail in its entirety is 4.4 miles round-trip, you can stop at the Paseo Miramar Lookout for beautiful sunset views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica, which makes it an easy 1.8-mile hike. On clear nights you’ll even be able to see the lights from the Santa Monica Pier and the lit-up Ferris wheel down the coastline. If you want a less challenging hike you can begin at the Paseo Miramar trailhead instead of the Los Liones trailhead, which is a quick 0.2 miles each way. Signal Hill Trail 

Located in inland Long Beach, Signal Hill Trail is a 1.7-mile family-friendly loop that’s stroller- and wheelchair-accessible. It offers great views of Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean, the San Gabriel Mountains, the lights of Orange County, and the skyline of Downtown LA. The trail begins and ends at Hilltop Park, which has a panoramic vista and is the perfect place to watch the sunset. There are several benches and tables where you can sit to enjoy the view, and there are monuments and sculptures scattered along the trail as well. This trail is a suburban setting, so don’t expect a wilderness adventure. The trailhead coordinates provided here begin at Discovery Well Park.

LA's Sunset Strip: A Colorful History

Before the LA invasion of coffee shops and juice bars , there were speakeasies and nightclubs attracting the rich and the famous to the Sunset Strip. Over the years, the City of Angels has grown increasingly more popular as the entertainment capital of the world, attracting hundreds of people everyday to the iconic stretch of land. Rich in history and internationally renowned, the beauty and culture of the strip is kept alive through many creative outlets that contribute to its overall character. More than meets the eye, the Sunset Strip is the mecca for music and the epicenter of entertainment, located in the city of the stars. Above the busy street, palm trees tower over the homes of many a- list celebrities tucked away in the Hollywood hills , both hidden and in plain sight.

The iconic billboards dominating the strip had once featured artistic advertisements for legendary musicians and starlets like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Donna Summers, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and many others. The colorful displays have inspired artistic pieces like Robert Landau’s book “Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip” and Ed Ruscha’ s self-published “Every Building on the Sunset Strip.” Landau ’s book can be found on display at the Skirball Cultural Center, a few miles down the strip and explores the vibrant billboards and the unique cityscape in the same way one would view a gallery of hand-painted images. Drawn to the neon signage of the Whiskey a Go Go after seeing a performance by the Doors, Ed Ruscha was similarly struck with inspiration, but with the architecture of the strip. He set out to create the twenty-five foot long panoramic fold out of the one and a half mile strip and every inch of its glory, capturing magnificent images of each building using a motorized Nikon camera mounted to the back of his Ford pick-up truck.

Although it is considered by critics to be a 21st century “must-destination for nightlife & dining”, the Sunset Strip is grounded in centuries of history dating back to the exciting nightlife of the ‘20s-30s, the counterculture riots in the ‘60s, and the heavy metal draw of the ‘80s. The iconic site has become one of the most visited in all of Los Angeles. Located between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, the “strip” of land fell outside the city’s boundaries and was therefore outside the reach of the LAPD’s jurisdiction. The lack of strict rules and regulations beyond the city limits transformed Sunset Strip into an inhibition-less stretch of land that would one day inspire feature films, novels, music, and artwork. The absence of law enforcement led to the emergence of speakeasies and nightclubs that made the strip the ultimate entertainment spot in LA.

Following the rush of movie-stars and a-listers, notorious mobsters, and other glam seeking city dwellers, the strip began to evolve with the growth of boutiques and restaurants. As it began to attract more people, hotels began to emerge in close proximity of the many nightclubs, restaurants, and attractions. The Sunset Tower Hotel still stands today as both an LA landmark and one of the most prominent and influential art deco structures in the city. Combining both modern style and convenience, the tower’s luxury penthouse apartments attracted a large celebrity clientele including Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Howard Hughes, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, and many other famous socialites. The castle-like Chateau Marmont was also a favorite amongst the stars for harboring their secret affairs. As quoted from the LA times , Sandra Bullock comments on the Sunset Boulevard hotel, “No wonder people come here to have affairs – it’s got that air of history, where you know a lot of people did things they weren’t suppose to do”, like Led Zeppelin allegedly driving their motorcycles through the hotel lobby. Dubbed the spot to party in private, Chateau Marmont has truly seen it all — the good, the bad, and the ugly. The hotel’s luxurious bungalows remain a popular celebrity Los Angeles staycation.

True to its reputation as the place to see and be seen, the Strip welcomed a wave of emerging musicians on their way to stardom in the early 20th century. Famous bands such as the Doors, Van Halen, and Guns N’ Roses first began at clubs along the strip, such as The Roxy, Whiskey a Go Go, and The Viper Room. Today, new generations of musicians continue to perform at these historic venues, excited to play on the same stage as the legends before them. The room is filled with positive vibrations, the energy is alive, and inspiration echoes off the walls from decades of history centered around an artistic passion that can only be found in the entertainment capital of the world.

The strip is filled with stories that will have you wondering, fact or fiction? From the cow John Wayne kept for fresh milk at the Sunset Tower to the blind date between Marilyn Monroe and first husband Joe DiMaggio at the Rainbow Bar and Grill, it has been the spot for many memorable moments in history. Inspiring Donna Summer’s song “Sunset People,” the lyrics read “Riot house, a penthouse suite. The street’s alive below your feet.” And not only is the strip alive, but it makes you feel more alive than ever, surrounded by the arts, entertainment, and culture of Los Angeles.

As a local hiking enthusiast, I’ve curated a list of the 13 Best Sunset Hikes in Los Angeles, each offering a unique perspective on the city’s golden hour beauty.

Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook 

Perched 425 ft above the city, Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook in Culver City provides a panoramic view of Los Angeles. The winding trails lead to a summit where the city lights come to life as the sun dips below the horizon, or hike the famous Culver City stairs to the top of the overlook. 

From here, you can see the ocean,  Santa Monica Mountains, Hollywood Hills, Verdugo Mountains, and even into San Gabriel Mountains and Mount Baldy on a clear day. As for the city, you will see everything – the Hollywood SIgn, Los Angeles, Downtown Los Angeles, and even LAX.

This hike is a very popular spot, especially for those on the West Side of LA,  but one of my favorite city hikes in Los Angeles for sunset. It’s a great workout, too!

There is also an option to drive to the top and walk a flat trail to the overlook if you don’t want to hike up, but you will have to pay for parking. Regardless, the sunset view here is one not to be missed.

Duration: Approximately 1 to 2 hours

Wisdom Tree Hike

Trek up to the iconic Wisdom Tree in Hollywood for a serene sunset experience and 360 views of Hollywood from above. This solitary tree atop Burbank’s Cahuenga Peak offers unobstructed views, creating a tranquil setting for witnessing the city’s transformation as the sun sets.

The notable views from up here look down at the hustle and bustle of the heart of Hollywood, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, Downtown Los Angeles, Burbank area, and you can even see the Universal City Walk area. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the ocean and maybe even Catalina Island.

This is my other favorite sunset spot in Los Angeles. The crowds here are a lot less than Baldwin Hills Overlook but depending on the day and weather, sometimes it will be busy and sometimes you may get lucky and have this spot all to yourself.

Pro Tip: The hike also continues on to the Hollywood Sign

Griffith Park / East Observatory Trail 

Griffith Park is a treasure trove of hiking trails, but the East Observatory Trail stands out for its spectacular sunset views. Wondering where the best place to watch the sunset in Griffith Park is? Look no further than this trail.

The trails in Griffith Park can range from short and easy to however long you want (by connecting trails) and strenuous. I used to think Griffith Park only had flat trails and I am definitely wrong. 

The views from Griffith Park can vary widely depending on which side of the park you are on since the trails do go up and down through a lot of little hills, but overall, it’s a beautiful view in the direction of Downtown Los Angeles.

Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours

Runyon Canyon Trail 

Known for its accessibility and popularity, Runyon Canyon Trail offers a front-row seat to the vibrant Los Angeles sunset. The hike is not only a visual delight but also a great workout and you may even see some truly LA-unique sights like hikers in high heels, making it a favorite among locals.

Duration: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours

Ascot Hills Park

A local LA-hidden gem, Ascot Hills Park provides a more secluded escape in the heart of the city. Don’t let the “park” in the name fool you though – there are plenty of hills and trails here. As the sun sets, the park’s natural beauty is enhanced, creating a peaceful ambiance that’s perfect for reflection.

Ascot Hills is located next to CSULA by Lincoln Heights, making this an easy to access urban hike for those located in both the downtown area and San Gabriel Valley.

Duration: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hour

Portuguese Bend Reserve

Nestled along the coast, Portuguese Bend Reserve offers a coastal sunset experience. The mix of ocean breeze and vibrant colors paints a picturesque scene as the sun sets over the Pacific.

The water along the coast gets to be a beautiful and clear turquoise water which makes you feel like you’re somewhere tropical and very far from LA.

This is a great option for those located in the South Bay region of California, although it’s worth the drive out for others looking for a coastal trail different than the typical ones in Santa Monica and Malibu.

Duration: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours

Parker Mesa Overlook 

For those seeking expansive ocean views from a place higher up, Parker Mesa Overlook in Pacific Palisades (Santa Monica Mountains) is the answer. The hike culminates in a stunning panorama, making it an ideal spot to witness the sun’s descent into the Pacific. 

This hike is longer than the ones listed above; the hikes above are parks and urban trails, but this one is a “real” hike that’s simply located close to city life.

Duration: Approximately 3 to 3.5 hours

Temescal Canyon

Temescal Canyon is located at the edge of Santa Monica, making it easy to access versus driving down PCH to Malibu. As the sun casts its warm hues over the canyon, the beauty of Temescal Canyon becomes even more enchanting. This trail can be as long as you want it to be before you start getting those beautiful ocean views, and it provides a balance of nature and urbanity, offering a unique sunset experience.

Duration: Approximately 1 to 2.5 hours

Topanga Lookout 

​​At Topanga Lookout, the sprawling landscapes of the Santa Monica Mountains come alive during sunset. The lookout point provides a captivating view, making it a favorite spot among avid sunset chasers. The platform at the lookout is quite large and even changes after periods of time by new artists.

Sandstone Peak 

Sandstone Peak is the tallest mountain in the Santa Monica Mountain range and or those up for a challenge, Sandstone Peak delivers both a strenuous hike and a rewarding sunset experience. 

You can simply hike straight up to Sandstone Peak and back down the same way for a shorter but still steep trail, or loop around the Mishe Mowke Trail and hit Tri Peaks too which I would recommend. If you make it to Tri Peaks, scramble over to the opposite side of the peak for views north towards Ventura.

The rugged terrain adds to the sense of accomplishment as you witness the sky ablaze with colors.

While the views from Sandstone Peak is beautiful for sunset, it’s also a stunning sunrise spot.

Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 4 hours

Ladyface Mountain 

This is the best hike in Agoura Hills. Named for its distinctive profile resembling a woman’s face, Ladyface Mountain offers a captivating sunset backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains and hills of Thousand Oaks and Calabasas around you. 

The ridgeline offers unobstructed views for almost a mile, making this one of the best spots to catch sunset. While there are no ocean views here as you are more inland and lower in elevation the blend of geological wonders and the evening sky makes this hike truly memorable.

Echo Mountain near Altadena and Pasadena is a very popular hiking trail for locals. Embark on a journey through history as you ascend Echo Mountain near Pasadena, with the option to extend your hike up to Mt Lowe and Inspiration Point, but that would almost double the mileage. The remnants of a bygone era, coupled with breathtaking views, create a unique and educational sunset experience.

San Gabriel Peak  

Concluding the list of best sunset hikes near Los Angeles is another one of my personal favorites – San Gabriel Peak, standing tall amidst the San Gabriel Mountains. This hike takes longer to reach as you drive for miles into Angeles National Forest on Angeles Crest Hwy 2, but even the drive in is breathtaking if you pull off an a pull-out while the sun sets. The views here are mountainous in one direction with the city in the distance in the other direction. Although this is a peak hike, it is on the short and easy side.

As the day concludes, this peak offers a spectacular view of the city lights twinkling below.

Now, I am happy to share with you this 5 days Los Angeles Itinerary, plus you will find great tips and helpful information to make the best of your LA Itinerary.

The first thing to know is that Los Angeles is a huge city and is very spread out , and visiting with an itinerary in mind, understanding the best things to do and the areas is your smartest choice.

With this 5-day Los Angeles Itinerary, you will be able to visit the bucket list places in LA without rushing and really have the best experience.

5-Day Los Angeles Itinerary Overview

If you are wondering, how many days you need to explore the best of Los Angeles , here is my honest answer for you:

Given the size of the city, and how spread out it is, I recommend a 5-day Los Angeles Itinerary. In 5 days in LA, you can avoid spending your visit running around from sight to sight, without time to really enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city.

Just because there is so much to do and see, I highly recommend coming to Los Angeles with a well-defined itinerary , in order to maximize your time. Some areas are walkable, for example, you can walk from Venice to Santa Monica in 1-hour. But in other areas such as Hollywood and Malibu, you will need a car or Uber .

Lastly, make sure you choose accommodation in a good area , where you can walk to the areas you want to visit. Making your reservations in advance is also part of a well-planned Los Angeles Itinerary.

How to Save Money on a 5-Day Los Angeles Itinerary

If visiting Los Angeles is on your bucket list, but the costs may scare you away – I have great advice and tips here for you! Yes, it is possible to visit Los Angeles for 5 days without breaking the bank!

You can find inexpensive hotels, there are some restaurants and cafes that have reasonable prices. I also recommend getting the Go Los Angeles Card or  Los Angeles Sightseeing Flex Pass as these passes start at $83 for one-day grant access to a variety of different attractions. Each pass has slightly different terms and attractions on offer so check carefully to see which will suit you better. This card offers 2 options:

• All-Inclusive Card: This is the best option as you can save up to 50% of the gate prices for the main attractions in Los Angeles.
• Build-Your-Own: With this option, you can save up to 20% of the gate prices, and you can choose to see only what is in your interests.
• Hop-off-Bus Ticket: This is a good option too, with options of 24, 48, or 72-hour passes. The tour is narrated and takes you exploring Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and Santa Monica Pier and Beaches.

A Perfect 5-Day in Los Angeles Itinerary

Day 1 los angeles itinerary: explore venice, 1. grab a coffee and an egg sandwich at the egg slut.

Start your first day of your 5-day Los Angeles itinerary with a hearty and yummy egg sandwich at the Egg Slut. I know right? This name – if you wonder why just like I did here we go: The name refers to a chef who simply adds an egg to everything to make it better. The first public use of it was by chef Anthony Bourdain in season 5, episode 5, of his show No Reservations, which aired on February 2, 2000 .

The egg sandwich is loaded with cheesy soft scrambled scallion eggs, sriracha mayo, crispy bacon, and a buttery toasted brioche bun. It’s the perfect sandwich for hangovers, brunches, or mornings when you need a little something extra to start your day. One of their specialties is the “slut” – a cage-free coddled egg on top of a smooth potato purée, poached in a glass jar – it is just yummy!

2. Visit Venice Beach Boardwalk

• Address: Ocean Front Walk, Venice Beach, California 9029

After grabbing your breakfast (or egg slut sandwich), walk to Venice Beach to enjoy the vibe. This eclectic and buzzing oceanfront playground for Southern Californians, and is one of my favorite things to do when I am visiting L.A. The beach here offers prime surfing, and you can also work on your tan if you feel like taking an easy morning.

But with so much to do, see and explore, I suggest you just walk around and make some stops along the way for a cocktail, pictures, or shopping. Now, talking about my favorite thing: active travel – this is paradise.

Here you can find a boardwalk that runs parallel to the ocean and many attractions line in including tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, bike, and rollerblading trails, a skatepark…

PRO-TIP: Take advantage that you are at one of the most famous beaches and join a Venice Beach 2-hour group surfing lesson , also recommended for beginners. Or you can join a fun gui ded bike tour to explore some of the best sights such as Venice Beach, Santa Monia, and the Venice Canals

4. Stop for a workout at Muscle Beach

• Address: Long Beach, CA 90802
• Price: $10 for a day pass or yearly membership is $200

Now we are talking about – as a bodybuilder athlete myself , I don’t have to say how much I love this place! This is the “Home of Bodybuilding” nestled right in the heart of Venice Beach since 1963.

This is the complete outdoor gym to work out. Some of the biggest names in bodybuilding and film including Franco Columbu, Lou Ferrigno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Frank Zane have all been called Muscle Beach Venice home, and you can also work out here during your Los Angeles itinerary.

PRO-TIP: Muscle Beach Venice is open 7 days a week except for major holidays and rainy days and you can pay $10 for a day pass.

4. Walk and take some pictures from the Pier in Venice Beach

• Address: 1600 Harbor Dr. S, Venice, FL 34285
• Hours: open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Located on the southern part of Venice Beach , there is a the1,300-foot concrete fishing pier, built-in 1963. The pier offers great views, including watching the surfers which is my favorite thing to do. Enjoy a stroll while you appreciate the breathtaking views, and take some beautiful pictures here. Occasionally you can see dolphins too.

PRO-TIP: If you feel hungry, grab a fish taco at the Venice Whaler , which is just a few minutes’ walks from the pier.

3. Visit the Venice Canals

• Address: The intersection of Pacific Avenue and Washington Boulevard

This is how the Venice name started – these canals were designed in 1905 to turn this area into a cultural center and create an Italian-inspired “Venice of America”. At one point the canals were home to gondolas imported from Italy.

Nowadays, the gondolas are gone, but it offers a beautiful and relaxing place to take a walk, away from the buzzing of the Venice Beach oceanfront.

6. Go shopping at the Kinney Boulevard

This is a mile-long strip of the latest fashion, art, and food and it is just minutes walking from Venice Beach . This is the place if you are searching for a truly eclectic shopping experience during your 5 days Los Angeles Itinerary. This is a bustling district, which stretches from Venice Boulevard to Pacific Avenue, and it is a popular destination for Joho Chip Shoppers. Here you can find one-of-a-kind local products, as well as internationally recognized brands.

If you are looking for a great place to eat, the Felix Trattoria is a temple with hand-made pasta and the traditional menu has a range of delicious antipasti, and second and vegetable contorini.

If you are looking for a great coffee or a small snack, you need to stop at The Butcher’s Daughter   with a delicious menu with plant-based versions of popular favorites, and a beautiful patio.

PRO-TIP: Every first Friday of the month at 5 pm the street becomes a festival, filled with live music and the L.A. Premier Food Truck Event, with dozen of food trucks.

7. Grab Happy Hour and enjoy the sunset

The best way to relax after this busy Los Angeles itinerary is to grab a cocktail and enjoy the magical sunset in Venice Beach. A great place to go is the Hotel Erwins’ Rooftop Lounge. – a stylish and open-air deck where you grab a drink and they also serve small plates. This is a cool place to hang out, with DJs both, night and day, and stunning views. They also offer brunch on the weekends from 11 am to 3 pm.

My personal preference is the Venice Whaler , and also, it is a very laid-back place. I just love the atmosphere, the world-famous fish tacos, and the fantastic margaritas – but the sunset is what makes it even more remarkable. The Whaler has been welcoming locals and celebrities since 1944 – such as the Doors, Beatles, and Beach Boys.

Don’t forget to check for the Los Angeles Hotels with rooftop pools , to take full advantage of the beautiful weather, and pool party scene.

Day 2 Los Angeles Itinerary: Explore Santa Monica

Start day 2 of your 5-Day Los Angeles Itinerary by exploring Santa Monica. It is one of the most scenic places in southern California, one of my favorite places in Los Angeles , offering 72 miles of coastline and sunshine for approximately 330 days in the year. With over 60 stunning beaches to explore, lots of amazing restaurants, and of course, the famous Santa Monica Pier for some fun!

1 . Have a Coffee or Brunch at Urth

Suggested start time: 9 AM Address: 2327 Main St. Santa Monica, CA 90405

Every time I visit Los Angeles, this is a must-stop for me. Founded in 1989, this cafe is widely considered the first coffee roasting company in America to offer exclusively organically grown, heirloom coffees. If you love coffee like me, they offer exclusive signature blends from light to dark roasts – from americano to latte, cappuccinos, and all between.

They also have a large selection of one tea. And the bakery is to die for! From a large variety of rich and creamy cheesecakes to amazing pies, and exquisite cakes. You have to try the chocolate hazelnut cake – layered with Nutella and hazelnut icing, and covered in chocolate hazelnut ganache. O-M-G!!! and don’t feel guilty, because, with all the walks on the second day of your Los Angeles itinerary, you will burn it all 😉

2. Go shopping or a stroll at the Third Street Promenade

After you grab an amazing breakfast at Urth, take a walk to the Third Street Promenade. This is a pedestrian-only stretch in Santa Monica, offering many stores between chains and locals, and the most important thing here, the dinosaur fountains.

PRO-TIP: On Wednesdays and Saturdays morning, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Arizona Avenue, you can visit the Santa Monica Farmers Market – where big-name chefs go to stock up on products for their restaurants in Los Angeles.

3. Enjoy the Beach

There is a paved path that follows the shoreline all the way to Venice Beach , and it is a paradise for runners, rollerblades, biking, or walking. If you wish, you can rent a bike and or rollerblades and cruise from the Pier to or from Venice Beach. You can also rent boogie boards or umbrellas and beach chairs at one of the small shops, and just enjoy the beach.

I recommend stopping by Perry’s Cafe for a refreshment or lunch and spending a few hours here. It is a very laid-back restaurant on the sand, with lounge chairs where you can just sit down, relax and enjoy some people-watching. Here you can also find a beach chair and umbrella for rental.

Santa Monica Beach is a very active place and one of the best areas to stay in LA . Here you will find volleyball courts, surf lessons, rent a bike, and ride the 22-mile-long Marvin Braude Beach Trail. Also, Santa Monica Beach is the home to the original Muscle Beach, and today it features gymnastic equipment. including parallel bars, rings, and ropes, that can be used by adults and also kids.

PRO-TIP: If you are driving, there are plenty of parking lots. Here you can also find restrooms and beach cafes along the beach.

4. Stroll the Santa Monica Pier

Address: 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401

This is the most popular spot and it symbolizes the heart of Santa Monica. This pier has been around since 1909, and it is considered one of the landmarks in Los Angeles . It was originally built as a public utility for the city of Santa Monica. Considered a National Landmark, the pier remains a nostalgic past day and remains a fun icon today.

I love coming here at sunset for pictures, and just staying for dinner at one of the amazing restaurants in the area. The historic Santa Monica Pier is where all the action is, with shops, small restaurants, cafes, and locals selling arts. The highlight is the Pacific Park , the amusement park on the pier featuring roller coasters, and the Ferris wheel.

PRO-TIP: You can walk here all the way from Venice Beach, which is about 1 hour (2.6 miles). Another great option is to go on a 3-Hour Electric Bike Tour . This is a cool tour as the bicycle allows you to choose your own comfort level between pedaling with 6 gears, using the electric motor power which puts the power completely in your control, or both

5. Have dinner at Water Grill

You will find an infinite of options for great bars and restaurants in Santa Monica. One of my favorite places is the Water Grill – especially if you love fresh seafood.

This is an oceanfront restaurant overlooking beautiful Santa Monica. The outside patio isn’t that big and gets filled up pretty fast during the weekend – so I would recommend making reservations if you are dining here on the weekend.

Bring your jacket because the ocean breeze can make you cold especially when the sun is down. The service is very good, and the inside of the restaurant looks very nice and classy.

Day 3 Los Angeles Itinerary: Take a road trip in Malibu

On the third day of this amazing 5-day Los Angeles Itinerary, you will discover all the magic about Malibu. The famous Pacific Coast Highway starts here, offering some of the most picturesque stretches of beach in Southern California. And then, there are the beaches in Malibu, I recommend spending at least a few hours exploring one of the beaches in Malibu. I have listed a couple of great options below for you. And if you are a wine lover like me, head to one of the amazing wineries in Malibu – with great quality local wine!

1. Drive the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu

Suggested start time: 9 AM Start Point: This drive starts at the end of Interstate 10 in Santa Monica

This part is if you have a car if you want to hire a private driver, or even better if you join a Vintage VW hippie sightseeing to tour this beautiful route. The drive to Malibu is an attraction itself.

You will want to stop in some spots to take pictures and appreciate the views. The total distance is about 49 miles and it takes one to two hours, depending on the traffic. Your driving experience will be a little more enjoyable if you drive the route south from Oxnard toward Santa Monica. You’ll be on the ocean side of the highway, with better views. It will be easier to make a beach or photo stop because you won’t have to cross traffic.

2. Head to the Beach in Malibu

The beaches in Malibu are very different from Venice Beach and Santa Monica, including private beaches where alcohol is allowed – but they are also notorious for the huge parking fees. You will find surf beaches, caves, and incredible rock formations.

The beaches in Malibu offer a laidback experience, where you can relax and lay in the sand. Or at least take a walk and enjoy the beauty and take some amazing pictures. Between Dec-Jan and April-May is when the whales migrate, and you have a high chance to see some gray whales, especially in the early morning. Some of the most popular beaches are:

• El Matador State Beach: This is one of the best-kept-secret. Here you can find caves and massive rock formations.
• Paradise Cove: This is a public beach where you and enjoy walking down the coast and marvel at the enormous mansions.
• Surfrider Beach: This is a great beach for surfing due to the long right-hand break. This is a perfect beach for taking the views and watching the action onshore.

3. Hiking in Malibu

If you are looking to go hiking, Malibu offers amazing hiking trails with views of the Pacific Ocean. Some of the best hikes in Malibu are the Escondido Canyon (3.7 miles), The Solstice Canyon Loop Trail (3.2 miles), and MASH Hike (4.85 miles).

Whatever hike trail you choose, you will be served with a beautiful landscape, with a seascape, mountains, and even waterfalls. Malibu hikes cover all difficulties from the easy hikes to difficult hikes for the expert and you can also customize your trail because some trails are linked to each other.

4. Go for a wine taste in Malibu

Location: Rosenthal Wine Bar is at 18741 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 90265.

Yes, you can (and should) go on wine taste in Malibu too – it is one of the coolest things to do in LA . You can find hidden in the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, a couple of great wineries, producing some pretty tasty (and affordable) wines. Some famous wineries are Cornell Winery & Tasting Room, Cielo Winery, and Rosenthal .

I visited Rosenthal, the oldest winery in Malibu. But even if the winery is not open to the public, the wine tasting bar in Malibu is the place to hang out. If you’re looking to taste Malibu wines at a beach party, this is the next best thing. Across from the Pacific Ocean, this Malibu tasting room can get quite crowded and lively. They serve Rosenthal Estate wines by glass, bottle, or flight.

PRO-TIP: If you love wine and are interested on experience some of the top vineyards with spectacular views, the best option is to join the Malibu Wineries Private Group Tour . The tour is a great experience to visit 3 wineries on a private luxury vehicle and with a local expert guide, that will share all about wine, the region, and the history of the area.

Day 4 Los Angeles Itinerary: Hollywood and Beverly Hills

On the fourth day of this 5-day Los Angeles Itinerary, you will explore the famous Hollywood and Beverly Hills area. I only recommend this part of the Los Angeles itinerary, for first-time visitors.

If you are staying in Venice Beach or Marina Del Rey, I recommend taking an Uber to this area. You can also hire a private guide to drive you to the Beverly Hills Celebrity Homes – I know it sounds a little cheesy, but I have to confess that I drove there on my first visit to Los Angeles, and I had fun “hunting” for the amazingly rich and famous mansions.

1. Griffith Observatory

Suggested start time: 9 AM Address: 2800 E Observatory Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027

The Observatory features space-related exhibits, star shows in the planetarium, and a telescope. Enjoy the grounds of the Observatory, it is beautiful and it features some terraces from where you get a birdseye view of the entire valley. If you happen to visit on a clear day, you will get to see all the way to Santa Monica from up here.

On the opposite hill, right across from the Griffith Observatory, you can catch an unobstructed view of the Hollywood Sign – that is the next destination of your 5-day Los Angeles itinerary.

PRO-TIP: Admission to the Observatory building, grounds, and telescopes are always free. However, you will have to buy tickets for the planetarium show . The best time to visit the Observatory is late afternoon towards the evening when you can stick around to see the sunset and city lights.

2. Hike the Hollywood Sign

Did you know that you can hike from Griffith Observatory to the Hollywood Sign? It is a 4.4-mile hike each way, The trailhead and the summit are separated by 575 feet of elevation, but because this route crosses a mountain in between, the hike actually has two ascents of 425 feet and 525 feet. If you decide to hike to the Hollywood Sign, you can check here for all the details .

The worldwide symbol of the U.S. movie industry has a very dull and uninteresting beginning. The Hollywood Sign was created as an outdoor billboard for real estate development, and today, it is the most well-known landmark in the city of Los Angeles .

PRO-TIP: If you don’t want to hike, you have the option to take a shuttle to the summit Hollywood summit. Driving to the Hollywood Sign is not allowed.

3. Walk the Sunset Strip

You can continue your fourth day in the Los Angeles itinerary with a walk on the famous Sunset Strip. The strip is the 1.5 -mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood. Sunset Boulevard extends from Hollywood all the way to Beverly Hills. This is very touristy, as you can imagine, but no Los Angeles itinerary would be complete without a visit to the famous Hollywood.

Here is home to flashy boutiques, high-end restaurants, and nightclubs, as well as huge, colorful billboards. Go shopping (or window shopping) at the famous Rodeo Drive , and walk among some of the world’s well-known fashion icons. 

Another thing you want to do during your first time visiting Los Angeles is to walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame . The internationally-recognized Hollywood landmark . It encompasses over 2,600 five-pointed stars made of terrazzo and brass and embedded in the sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard.

4. Visit the Chinese Theater

Price to visit: FREE Address:   6925 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028

Stop by another famous landmark in the city of Los Angeles , the Chinese Theater. it became famous for being the venue of the  Academy Awards   ceremony from 1944 to 1946. But most visitors come here because of the celebrity handprints and footprints in the concrete of the theater’s forecourt. The tradition began during the theater construction when one of the Hollywood legends at the time accidentally stepped into the wet cement outside the building.

5. Visit some Celebrity Homes in Beverly Hills

Finish your Los Angeles Itinerary today by strolling through this tranquil green space filled with landscaped hedges, cascading fountains, and colonnaded walkways in Beverly Hills. While the city offers beautiful green spaces, a jog through  Beverly Gardens Park   offers ample space and a chance to sightsee as well.

If you are curious and want to dive into the “celebrity world” I recommend grabbing a map with the celebrity’s homes, or joining a local tour for a 2-hour fun time around Hollywood and Celebrity homes tour .

Day 5 Los Angeles Itinerary: Relax by the Marina Del Rey

You must be exhausted from this busy itinerary – I know I was after I have done this itinerary myself. And I also consider Marina Del Rey one of the best areas to stay in LA since it is quiet with excellent restaurants, and it is also within walking distance to Venice Beach.

So finish your dreamy 5-day Los Angeles Itinerary by chilling a bit, and here is the best place! The Marina Del Rey is a man-made marina in Los Angeles dating back to the 1960s. Today it is home to approximately 5,000 boats, offering opportunities for paddle-boarding, kayaking, yachting, cycling, and whale watching.

1. Start your day with a Brunch at the Marina Del Rey

Suggested start time: 10 AM Address: 4175 Admiralty Way Marina del Rey, CA 90292

The last day of this 5-day Los Angeles itinerary can start with a relaxing and enjoyable brunch at the stunning Marina Del Rey. My favorite place for brunch is the Jamaica Bay Inn . The brunch here is simply phenomenal, and the views make it a dreamy place you want to be when you visit Los Angeles for 5 days.

It has a great outdoor dining place with nice patios near the beach. It’s the kind of place LA has to offer. I ordered the avocado toast, and it was truly the best I ever had in my life.

PRO-TIP: If you plan to come on the weekend, you will need to make reservations in advance. In this article, you can find the best places to stay in Marina Del Rey .

2. Go for a Walk / Run / Kayaking or Paddleboard on Marina Del Rey

After that brunch, you can pick and choose some of the many activities to do at Marina Del Rey. You can rent a paddleboard or join a stand-up paddle-boarding lesson for all experience and skill levels. Downtown Los Angeles: Best for first-time visitors

Mid-Range | The Palihouse Hotel is an excellent option, located only 5-minutes from the beach. This is an iconic hotel that has been around since the 1900s. All the rooms come with kitchenettes, which allow you to prepare your own meals.

Luxury hotel | Casa Del Mar is a luxury hotel and one of the only beachfront hotels in Los Angeles. Here you can enjoy the pool that overlooks the beach, while you enjoy your favorite cocktail and live music. The rooms are lavishly decorated, and the spa offers amazing facials and massages.

Good Value Hotel | Hilton Garden Inn is where I stayed during my last visit to L.A. and I recommend this hotel. Featuring an outdoor pool and hot tub, it is only a 2-minute walk to the beach, and 1 mile from Venice Beach Boardwalk. Very comfortable bed and good size rooms.

Mid-Range | Jamaica Bay Inn is a beautiful collection by Hilton. Of all the hotels in Marina Del Rey, this is the best boutique hotel, right on Marina’s beach, with an outdoor pool, and it is the best option for families to stay in too.

Luxury hotel | Ritz-Carlton, Marina Del Ray One of the highlights of this incredible hotel is the fresh-caught seafood plates at the restaurant Cast and Plow. Also, you can get spoiled with an 80-minute bliss-fest massage, or chill in the poolside cabana, with complimentary sparkling wine and refreshments on tap.

What to Pack for your 5 Day Los Angeles Itinerary

• Los Angles Sightseeing Pass: I also recommend getting the Go Los Angeles Card or  Los Angeles Sightseeing Flex Pass as these passes start at $83 for one-day grant access to a variety of different attractions.
• Comfortable Pair of Shoes: That is the first thing you should pack for your trip to L.A.. you will walk a lot, and you maybe add some hiking too. I love my Nike Air Force as I find it ideal to wear with my gym clothes or a cute dress for a casual dinner.
• Summer dresses: I recommend at least one summer dress as they are versatile to walk during the day or going out in the evening
• Leggings: You will need at least one pair. Leggings are your best friend in L.A., as you can wear them pretty much every day (and night too;-))
• Workout outfit: Dressing in layers and comfortably is the best rule to explore Los Angeles.
• Long sleeves shirt and light sweater: It can get chilly in Los Angeles, even during the summer months. It is always wise to dress in layers!
• Sunscreen : While you are out exploring, make sure to protect yourself from the sun. I recommend the Stream 2 Sea Sunscream and they are reef-safe
• Sunglasses and hat: Don’t forget to pack your pair of sunglasses , you will need them!
• Swimsuit: The water may be chilly, but I recommend planning at least a half-day at the beach, so pack that travel beach bag !
• Beach Towel: This travel towel is a must to be used at the beach, on a picnic, or even as a blanket.

• Reusable water bottle: Never travel anywhere without a  reusable water bottle . Remain hydrated without wasting single-use plastic bottles!

Former Location – Opened in 1965 and owned by Elmer Valentine, who also owned and operated the nearby Whisky A Go Go , The Trip featured quality acts such as The Velvet Underground , Donovan , The Byrds and The Turtles .

The Trip was located in a former jazz club called the Crescendo . There also was a comedy club upstairs called the Interlude . The Trip was short lived, having closed in May 1967.

33 Incredible Day Trips from Los Angeles That Feel Like Mini Vacations

You finally have a day to get away from Los Angeles, but you don’t want to travel too far. 

Oh, how I love living in LA! The city has it all: glamour, beaches, hiking trails, and, of course, unbeatable weather. But sometimes, we just need to break free for a day. And there are endless fantastic day trips from Los Angeles that are just a short drive away. 

Almost every weekend, I find myself exploring a new area within a few hours of LA, and I’ve compiled the ultimate cheat sheet to help you plan your own last-minute day trips. So, here it is—a curated list of 20 of my favorite day trips from Los Angeles that are well worth the short-ish drive.

Easy Day Trips from Los Angeles: Less than 1 Hour

1. griffith park.

Distance:  ~6.5 miles/10 minutes   Type:  Park & Observatory   Best Time to Go:  All year round 

If you’d like to get the best shot of the Hollywood Sign and of the entire Los Angeles, Griffith Park is a must on an LA itinerary . This park is one of the biggest urban green spaces in North America and it’s packed with trails that have awesome city views. The iconic Griffith Observatory is free to enter and has telescope viewing and science exhibits. 

If you’re into movies, you can catch a flick at the historic Greek Theatre or tour the famous Warner Bros. Studios nearby. And definitely don’t miss getting a selfie with the Hollywood sign from one of the park’s many viewpoints.

2. Universal Studios Hollywood 

Distance:  ~10 miles/15 minutes   Type:  Amusement Park & Studio Tour   Best Time to Go:  Spring or Fall 

Universal Studios Hollywood is a legendary theme park and studio tour that has been entertaining visitors for decades. It’s a fun day trip, with behind-the-scenes looks at how movies are made, themed rides based on popular films, and even a Wizarding World of Harry Potter. 

CityWalk, the entertainment complex outside the park, has lots of restaurants, shops, and street performers. It’s a great way to end your day at Universal Studios Hollywood. 

Budget Tip!  The annual pass may even make more sense than getting a day pass, especially if you live in SoCal. 

3. Pasadena 

Distance:  ~20 miles/20 minutes   Type:  City   Best Time to Go:  All year round 

Pasadena, with its stunning architecture, is a cool spot just outside downtown LA. Stroll around Old Town or catch a show at the gorgeous Pasadena Playhouse. The Norton Simon Museum, with its awesome collection of European and Asian art, is a must-visit, too.

For a chill and pretty afternoon, visit the Huntington Library. This place is huge, with beautiful gardens, rare books and manuscripts, and art galleries. And, if you’re here in spring, the famous rose garden is a sight to see in full bloom.

4. Santa Monica 

Distance:  ~20 miles/20 minutes   Type:  Beach & City   Best Time to Go:  All year round

A perfect blend of beach and city vibes, Santa Monica is the classic image everyone has of LA. Stroll down the famous Santa Monica Pier and play on the carnival games and rides, or watch street performers while munching on some cotton candy. A must-see is the end of the Route 66 marker, which marks the beginning or end of the famous highway.

Head to Third Street Promenade for major retail therapy in an outdoor pedestrian mall. Otherwise, rent a bike and ride along the beach path from Santa Monica to Venice Beach to ogle the musclemen at Muscle Beach and cool street art.

5. Venice Beach 

Distance:  ~20 miles/25 minutes   Type:  Beach & Quirky Town   Best Time to Go:  All year round 

Venice Beach is the place for people-watching in LA. The boardwalk overflows with street performers, fortune-tellers, vendors selling all sorts of things, and the overall eclectic crowd that calls this town home. Be impressed by the boarders at the famous Venice Beach Skatepark and those doing 360’s on the waves by the pier. 

For a little slice of Italy in the States, walk along the Venice Canals and admire the gorgeous homes and landscaping. Or, rent a paddleboat or kayak to explore the waterways yourself. Finish off your day with a sunset at one of the many beachside restaurants and bars. 

6. Disneyland Resort, Anaheim 

Distance:  ~25 miles/30 minutes   Type:  Amusement Park   Best Time to Go:  Spring or fall

No trip to Southern California would be complete without a day or two at the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland Resort , Anaheim. Just a short drive from downtown, Disneyland has thrilling rides like Space Mountain and attractions such as It’s a Small World for all ages. Not to forget, the parades and fireworks are simply magical.

The resort comprises two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Disneyland Park is where you can meet beloved Disney characters and visit fairy-tale castles, while California Adventure Park takes you to the Golden State’s landmarks and stories with a dash of Pixar flare. 

7. Malibu 

Distance:  ~30 miles/35 minutes   Type:  Beach   Best Time to Go to Malibu:  Early Fall or Spring

Drive up the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), and you’ll reach Malibu, a beach town known for its celebrity homes and stunning coastal views. Spend your day lounging on the sand at Zuma Beach or exploring the tide pools at Leo Carrillo State Park. My personal favorite is El Matador Beach, which is filled with sea stacks and fine sand. 

You can also hike in Malibu Creek State Park to see the famous M A S*H filming location. For a touch of luxury, swing by Malibu Country Mart, Malibu’s fancy spot for shopping and eating. You’ll spot so many posh cars parked out front that it almost seems like a car museum.

8. Newport Beach & Balboa Island

Distance:  ~45 miles/50 minutes   Type:  Beach   Best Time to Go:  Summer

Escape the city and head down to the charming coastal town of Newport Beach. With its sunny beaches and upscale shopping and dining options, this is one of the most popular day trips from Los Angeles. You can spend your morning surfing or sunbathing at the beach and your afternoon shopping along Balboa Island’s waterfront boutiques.

For a bit of history, take the Balboa Island Ferry to get to the island and explore its charming cottages. You can also spot dolphins and whales on a boat tour around Newport Bay or catch a performance at The Newport Theater Arts Center. And when hunger strikes, don’t miss out on trying the famous Balboa Bar, a local dessert invention that’s a must-try for any foodie. 

9. Laguna Beach 

Distance:  ~50 miles/55 mins Type:  Beach & Art Town   Best Time to Go:  Year-round

Located in Orange County, the small coastal town of Laguna Beach boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in California. Spend a day here enjoying the sun, sand, and sea at Main Beach or Thousand Steps Beach. It’s also one of the few places in California that is great for snorkeling or diving.

For a more cultural experience, visit the Laguna Art Museum, which showcases contemporary art by California artists. You can also take a stroll around town and admire public art installations and galleries or join an art class to try your hand at pottery or live model sketching. And don’t forget to end your day with a beautiful sunset over the Pacific ocean at Heisler Park. 

10. San Juan Capistrano 

Distance:  ~55 miles/55 minutes   Type:  Historic Landmark  Best Time to Go:  Year-round, but spring for the swallows

San Juan Capistrano is a town known for its mission architecture and the annual return of the swallows. The Mission San Juan Capistrano has gorgeous architecture and gardens, which you can also take a self-guided audio tour on.

The Los Rios Historic District has homes and shops dating back to the 1700s. You can even go see the famous Oldest House in California, built in 1794. And of course, be sure to visit during the spring when the swallows return to their nesting grounds at the mission.

Best Day Trips from Los Angeles: Less than 2 Hours

11. ventura and the channel islands national park.

Distance:  ~70 miles/1 hour 5 minutes   Type:  City & National Park   Best Time to Go:  Spring or Fall 

Ventura is a great little city located just north of LA, with a thriving arts scene and plenty of outdoor activities. Head out on the water with Ventura Boat Rentals and go fishing or whale watching. I especially came out here for a Demolition Derby, which was super fun.

One of Ventura’s main draws is its close proximity to the Channel Islands National Park . Take a ferry to one of the five islands and spend the day hiking, kayaking, or camping in this beautiful protected area. It’s one of the most under-visited national parks in the country!

12. The Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve 

Distance:  ~70 miles/1 hour 20 minutes Type:  Wildflower Reserve  Best Time to Go:  March and April

Every year, the rolling hills of the Antelope Valley are covered in endless fields of bright orange poppies. This natural phenomenon only lasts for a few weeks in spring, and it’s particularly great during the “super blooms”  that occur every few years with a lot of rainfall.

I’ve gone out three times to Lancaster County now to chase this fairy tale scene, and each time is more beautiful than the last. 

Travel Tip!  Put in Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, but the best fields may actually be outside the reserve itself. 

13. Ojai 

Distance:  ~80 miles/1 hour and 25 minutes Type:  City & Outdoor Activities    Best Time to Go:  Year-round, but especially spring

Looking for a chill spot away from city noise? Ojai’s a cute little town on the Ojai Valley, surrounded by mountains and a super laid-back vibe. Take a hike in the surrounding Los Padres National Forest mountains, taste some wines at the local wineries, and swing by the Ojai Olive Oil Company to get the scoop on how olive oil is made. And stop by the side of the road to sneak freshly picked citrus fruits grown in Ojai! 

14. Lake Arrowhead

Distance:  ~80 miles/1 hour and 30 minutes  Type:  Outdoor Activities   Best Time to Go:  Summer or Winter 

Whether shrouded in snow in the winter or glistening under the summer sun, Lake Arrowhead is a popular mountain resort town in the San Bernardino National Forest. The lake itself, a private yet accessible centerpiece, is perfect for boating, fishing, and swimming, with Lake Arrowhead Village providing shopping and dining options shoreside. 

Hiking trails lead adventurers through dense forests to sweeping mountain vistas, or you can relax on one of the public beaches. In the winter, you can also hit the Snow Valley Mountain Resort slopes or go tubing at Snowdrift Snow Tubing Park.

15. Santa Barbara

Distance:  ~95 miles/1 hour 30 minutes   Type:  Beach Town  Best Time to Go to Santa Barbara:  Spring to Fall

Go for a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway with the ocean on one side and mountains on the other to no other than Santa Barbara. Once you arrive, stroll the downtown area filled with cute cafes and outdoor patios. The Stearns Wharf will have fresh seafood waiting for you.

Take a hike up to Inspiration Point for panoramic views of the city, spend the day at the beach, or visit the Old Mission Santa Barbara, one of California’s most beautiful Spanish missions. Santa Barbara is also a popular destination for wine lovers, with numerous wineries and vineyards to tour and taste some of California’s best wines.

16. Santa Catalina Island

Distance: ~20 miles/1 hour 30 minutes by ferry Type: Island & Outdoor Activities Best Time to Go: Spring or Summer

If you’ve ever wondered what that island just beyond the Pacific is, it’s Catalina Island. Take a ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro or find a sailor friend to sail to Catalina Island. This beautiful island off the coast of Southern California is a great day trip for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Get the island beach experience and eat ice cream in the main town of Avalon, with its colorful buildings and quaint shops. And for a unique experience, take a tour on a glass-bottom boat to see the marine life surrounding the island.

17. Temecula Wine Country

Distance:  ~95 miles/1 hour and 40 minutes   Type:  Wine Tasting & Outdoor Activities   Best Time to Go:  Spring or Fall 

If you don’t want to go  all the way to Napa and Sonoma , then Temecula Wine Country is your wining and dining place in SoCal. With over 40 wineries, you can spend an entire day sipping on award-winning wines while going through the rolling hills and vineyards on a guided tour.

You can also go hot-air ballooning over the vineyards, explore Old Town Temecula, or head to Lake Skinner for fishing, camping, and hiking.

18. Palm Springs 

Distance:  ~105 miles/1 hour and 45 minutes Type:  Desert Resort City   Best Time to Go to Palm Springs:  Fall to Spring 

Palm Springs, with its sunny climate and majestic mountains as the backdrop, is a popular desert oasis that has attracted Hollywood celebrities for years. It’s also known as the “playground of the stars” due to its abundance of luxury resorts, golf courses, and spas. 

To taste Old Hollywood glamour, visit the Palm Springs Walk of Stars or take a celebrity house tour. There are lots of hiking trails in the nearby canyons, and the famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway takes you to the top of Mount San Jacinto. 

19. Big Bear Lake 

Distance:  ~100 miles/2 hours   Type:  Outdoor Activities & Winter Sports   Best Time to Go:  Anytime, but winter is best 

Another San Bernardino Mountain Range favorite, Big Bear Lake, is a popular year-round destination with many outdoor activities. Most famous for Big Bear Mountain Resort, you can hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding during winter or go tubing at the Alpine Slide. In the summer, you can dip in the lake, go hiking, wakeboarding, or zip-lining.

20. San Diego

Distance:  ~120 miles/2 hours   Type:  City  Best Time to Go to San Diego :  Year-round

With its sunny beaches and a world-famous zoo, San Diego is basically Los Angeles’s more laid-back sister city.

Spend your San Diego day at Balboa Park, the city’s largest urban cultural park with museums, gardens, and performing arts venues, until your legs are sore. Or catch some waves and wave to some sea lions at one of its many beaches, such as La Jolla or Mission Beach.

Go on a San Diego food tour to munch on everything from fresh seafood to authentic Mexican cuisine. For partying, I’ve been a frequent visitor to the Gaslamp Quarter, where they hold festivals that are always worth the drive.

Los Angeles Day Trips: Less than 3 Hours

21. solvang.

Distance:  ~130 miles/2 hours  and 5 minutes Type:  City & Danish Culture   Best Time to Go:  Spring or Fall 

Take a trip to the Danish countryside without leaving California. Solvang, located in the Santa Ynez Valley, is a fascinating little town with windmills and half-timbered buildings that will make you feel like you’re in Europe. 

Munch on some authentic Danish pastries or visit one of the many wineries in the area. The town center even has a Little Mermaid statue that’s just as small as the real one in Copenhagen. 

22. Santa Ynez Valley 

Distance:  ~130 miles/2 hours  and 5 minutes Type:  Wine Country   Best Time to Go:  Spring or Fall

For wine lovers, the Santa Ynez Valley region has over 120 wineries and vineyards. You can tour and taste delicious wines from local producers or even go on a hot air balloon ride over the valley. And if you’re not into wine, the sprawling countryside also offers outdoor activities like horseback riding and golfing. 

23. Calico Ghost Town  

Distance:  ~130 miles/2 hours  and 5 minutes Type:  Ghost Town  Best Time to Go:  Year-round 

Located in the Mojave Desert, Calico was once a bustling silver mining town. But when the mines closed, so did the town, which was left abandoned. In 1951, Walter Knott (of Knott’s Berry Farm fame) purchased the town and restored it to its former glory.

Now a popular tourist destination, you can explore the historic buildings, pan for gold, and even ride an old steam train. On President’s Day, I’ve heard rumors that you can attend a civil reenactment (something on my bucket list). 

24. Joshua Tree National Park

Distance:  ~130 miles/2 hours 15 minutes   Type:  National Park  Best Time to Go to Joshua Tree :  Fall or spring

Joshua Tree National Park is a must-visit, period. Its unique landscape of desert flora and famous Joshua trees gives you access to endless hiking, rock climbing, camping, and stargazing.

I highly recommend you come in the late spring and fall, when the weather is prime for outdoor activities. And when you do, don’t miss places like Skull Rock, Cholla Cactus Garden, Keys View, and Hidden Valley. Aside from snapping some shots with the desert trees that only grow here, make sure to stay for at least one sunset.

25. Tijuana, Mexico

Distance:  ~140 miles/2 hours 20 minutes   Type:  City  Best Time to Go:  Anytime, but check border crossing wait times

You’re literally so close to Mexico, you can take a day trip to Tijuana, a city just across the US-Mexico border. Sometimes, I hear of people from San Diego just crossing the border for cheaper gas and a Costco run. 

Although it’s not known as the safest destination, it’s a cool way to experience Mexican culture without having to fly too far. You can spend the day exploring the city’s famous Avenida Revolucion and eating your fill of authentic tacos and margaritas.

Travel Tip!  Bring your passport and necessary travel documents with you before crossing the border, and check border crossing wait times beforehand here .

26. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park 

Distance:   ~150 miles/2 hours 40 minutes   Type:  National Park & Desert Oasis  Best Time to Go:  Winter through Spring

Head to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California. This desert oasis is home to palm groves, slot canyons, and scenic desert landscapes that are just as beautiful as Joshua Tree but without the crowds.

Camping here means you can stargaze at night and explore the park’s many hiking trails during the day. Be sure to check out the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail, which leads to an oasis of palm trees in the middle of the desert.

27. Salton Sea 

Distance:  ~165 miles/2 hours 40 minutes   Type:  Lake & Artsy Best Time to Go:  Fall and Winter 

Once a popular vacation spot in the 1950s, the Salton Sea is now a shell of its former self. This inland lake was accidentally created when the Colorado River breached its banks in 1905, and today, it is home to misfits and artists.

Bombay Beach is one of my favorite urban exploration spots to visit, with reconditioned abandoned structures and quirky art installations. Hike in the Painted Canyon, a beautiful slot canyon that leads to a hidden palm oasis.

Travel Tip!  The lake smells not the greatest in some areas becuase of the lake’s high salinity levels and decaying fish.  

Los Angeles Day Trips: Less than 4 Hours

28. slab city and salvation mountain.

Distance:  ~190 miles/3 hours 5 minutes   Type:  Offbeat & Cultural  Best Time to Go:  Fall through spring 

Slab City and Salvation Mountain is an off-grid community with an eclectic mix of residents, hand-painted art installations, and quirky events.

The most famous attraction in this area is Salvation Mountain, a colorful and spiritual monument created by Leonard Knight. You can see the rest of Slab City, known as “the last free place on earth,” and its many art installations and makeshift homes built from found materials.

Travel Tip!  As amazing as this place is to visit, I would not recommend staying overnight as there can be some sketchy happenings.

29. Morro Bay

Distance:  ~200 miles/3 hours 15 minutes   Type:  Coastal Town  Best Time to Go:  Summer or winter whale watching

On California’s Central Coast, Morro Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the state. The actual Morro Rock towers over the bay, making it a favorite hangout for whale watching, fishing, and kayaking.

But better yet is the nearby state park, Montana de Oro, with its dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches. The sunset viewed through the arches of the sea stacks was one of the most breathtaking sights I’ve ever seen in my life!

30. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Distance:  ~205 miles/3 hours 35 minutes   Type:  National Parks  Best Time to Go:  Spring through Fall

While it’s a longer drive from Los Angeles, a trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are well worth the journey. These two national parks are the closest place you’ll get to seeing the towering sequoia trees and powerful waterfalls.

General Sherman, the largest tree in the world, is located in Sequoia National Park. You can also hike through the Giant Forest to see other impressive sequoias. Kings Canyon is Sequoia’s smaller, less-visited neighbor, but being so close, you can do both parks on the same trip.

31. Death Valley National Park

Distance:  ~215 miles/3 hours 35 minutes   Type:  National Park & Desert Landscape Best Time to Go to Death Valley :  Fall to Spring

Despite its ominous name, Death Valley National Park is one of my favorite places in California, as long as you don’t go in the summer. Located in the Mojave Desert National Preserve, this park is known for its extreme temperatures, with the lowest and hottest point in North America. It’s also recognized as an International Dark Sky Park and one of the best night skies I’ve ever seen. 

Some of my favorite spots in Death Valley  include Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level, and Zabriskie Point, a viewpoint on top of the colorful badlands. For another amazing sunset contender, hike the tallest dune you can find at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes for some epic photoshoots. 

Travel Tip!  Avoid going during the summer when temperatures reach over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

32. Alabama Hills

Distance:  ~215 miles/3 hours 40 minutes   Type:  Scenic Area Best Time to Go:  Spring and fall 

Another of my favorite places on Earth, Alabama Hills is a beautiful and unique landscape of rounded boulders in front of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This area has been a filming location for many Western movies, including Django Unchained and Iron Man.

Camping spots are all boon-docking, but lately, you’ll see more “day use only” signs popping up, meaning you can’t camp there anymore.

If you’re coming all the way out here, make a detour at some other alien landscapes like Fossil Falls and Trona Pinnacles. Fossil Falls is a geological formation from the remnants of an ancient waterfall. Trona Pinnacles, on the other hand, is a series of tufa formations rising out of the desert floor. 

33. Las Vegas, Nevada

Distance:   ~270 miles/4 hours   Type:  City & Entertainment  Best Time to Go to Las Vegas:  Year-round, but avoid major holidays

Las Vegas is the city that never sleeps. Known for its epic nightlife, jingling casinos, and shows to keep you entertained for your entire life, Las Vegas is one of the most popular destinations in the country. It might not be the easiest place to take a day trip, but after a weekend of debauchery, I’m sure you’ll be good to go come Monday morning. 

Aside from the bright lights of the Strip , hike in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or take a day trip to the Hoover Dam or the Valley of Fire State Park.

If you do want to try your luck at the casinos, set a budget beforehand and stick to it. Remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. 

Final Thoughts: Best Mini Road Trips from Los Angeles, California

Living in Los Angeles really made me fall in love with the United States. Wandering on these California road trips has been some of the most enlivening experiences of my life. It’s crazy to me how much adventure one could actually squeeze into a single day or a weekend. But standing atop the highest dune in Death Valley at sunset or finding myself enchanted by the eerie beauty of Trona Pinnacles dispelled any doubts I had.

Paramount+’s Sunset Strip Heavy Metal Docuseries ‘Nöthin’ But a Good Time’ Sets Stage Time, Unveils Trailer

Dig out your spandex and hide your daughters because Paramount+ is unleashing the world of ‘80s hair metal.

The streamer will launch its docuseries Nöthin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story on September 17. It has also dropped the trailer for the series, which covers bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Poison, Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P.

Based on Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock’s book Nöthin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the ’80s Hard Rock Explosion, the three-part series is directed by Jeff Tremaine, who directed Jackass and Motley Crue movie The Dirt.

It tells the story of the notoriously wild ’80s hard rock phenomenon, largely coming from LA’s Sunset Strip, and features interviews with rock stars that lived it and survived, including Bret Michaels, Stephen Pearcy, Nuno Bettencourt, Dave “Snake” Sabo and Riki Rachtman, along with Corey Taylor and Steve-O.

The series is produced by Tremaine’s Gorilla Flicks, Wheelhouse’s Spoke Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios. Tremaine, Shanna Newton, Eric Wattenberg, Scott Lonker, Will Nothacker, Erik Olsen, Bruce Gillmer and Michael Maniaci exec produce with Bienstock and Beaujour serving as co-exec producers.

“I’m honored to be part of this docuseries, named after the hit Poison song “Nothin’ But A Good Time”,” said Bret Michaels. “I’m excited for viewers to take a fresh look at the fans and bands, highs and lows, and to celebrate the music and good times of the ’80s and beyond. I hope the audience enjoys it as much as I did, and I can’t wait for them to have insight into some of those notoriously crazy moments.”

A death row inmate dubbed the " Sunset Strip Killer " died in prison 40 years after hunting women on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard.

Douglas Daniel Clark, 75, was responsible for the gruesome murders of at least six women, including one victim whom he decapitated and whose head he kept in his refrigerator.

Clark, a former factory worker from Burbank, died of natural causes on Wednesday in the San Quentin State Prison, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

His girlfriend and partner in crime, Carol Bundy, died in prison in December 2003 at the age of 61.

Clark and Bundy typically targeted young prostitutes or teenage runaways who were working "The Strip" at night.

The victims were sexually assaulted and slaughtered, often by a gunshot with .25-caliber to the head.

Some of the victims were decapitated so Clark could keep their heads as mementos, and he was found guilty of performing sex acts with their corpses.

The dangerous duo was arrested in August 1980, and Clark infamously tried to act as his own lawyer. He ultimately lost the case.

Testimony at his 1983 trial showed that Clark had an obsessive interest in necrophilia and had sex with some of his victims' corpses before dumping them in the San Fernando Valley, according to Fox 11 .

Bundy sometimes accompanied Clark on his murderous forays. She told police she had been "overwhelmed" by his dominance and charm and had fallen in love with him, the outlet reported.

He was sentenced in March 1983 to six consecutive death sentences for six counts of first-degree murder, as well as prison time for mutilation/sexual contact with human remains and attempted first-degree murder. 

He was later condemned to death on March 24, 1983, but spent the next four decades in prison until he died Wednesday. 

Bundy avoided the death sentence by agreeing to testify against Clark as part of a plea deal. 

Remembering the victims

As many true crime cases involving heinous serial killers that seize audience's fascination, the victims could be forgotten. 

These are Clark's and Bundy's known victims.

Gina Narano and Cynthia Chandler, both teenagers at the time, were sexually assaulted and fatally shot in the head before they were dumped in a Los Angeles garage. 

They were found on June 1, 1980. 

Karen Jones, 25, was shot in the head and raped. Her body was found in a wooded area on June 24, 1980, off the Ventura Freeway.

Exxie Wilson, 20, was sexually assaulted and shot in the head on July 11, 1980. 

Her body was found the next day, and investigators said her body was mutilated post-mortem.

Marnette Comer, 17, was sexually assaulted, fatally shot in the head and dumped near the Forest Lawn Cemetery, where she was found on July 12, 1980.

A still unidentified body was found in Newhall, California, on Aug. 26, 1981, according to Los Angeles Magazine.
