Voyager 6 was equipped with an antenna and a ground test computer , for use in communicating with Earth. It was designed to transmit a signal relaying its readiness to transmit the information gathered, and to do so upon receipt of a code signal instructing the computer to transmit the data. ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture )

History [ ]

During its mission, Voyager 6 disappeared into what was once called a black hole (see V'ger ), emerging on the other side of the galaxy , where it fell into the gravitational field of a planet populated by a race of living machines. The inhabitants found the probe to be one of their own kind, primitive, yet kindred. Discovering its simple, 20th century programming, which directed Voyager to collect all data possible and return that information to the creator, the machines interpreted it literally, and constructed a massive vessel around the probe in order to facilitate that directive. On its journey back to Earth, it amassed so much knowledge that it achieved consciousness itself, becoming a living thing. In the 2270s , the entity was detected by Starfleet en route to Earth, and was intercepted by the USS Enterprise , whose crew was able to discover the fate of the long-lost probe. According to Star Trek Chronology , Voyager 6 was launched in 1999 . According to Decker's line in the movie, however, it was launched " more than 300 years ago ". This suggests a launch date sometime before or in the early 1970s . In the real world, the actual launches of the first (and only) two Voyager probes took place in 1977.

Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 8 , p. 106, also uses the Star Trek Chronology 's 1999 date, noting that " Voyager VI " [sic] was officially approved in May 1972 , and that all six of the Voyager series were built identically of 65,000 individual parts, including a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, plasma and cosmic ray detectors, and a data storage capacity of 500 million bits.

The fictional Voyager 6 probe around which V'ger was built, was actually a full-scale mock-up of the real world Voyager 1 and 2 probes of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL). JPL's director John Casani agreed to loan the model to the studio in October 1977, mere months after the actual Voyager probes were launched in August and September that year. Then Star Trek: Phase II (the immediate predecessor of The Motion Picture ) Producer Robert Goodwin reported in a progress memo, dated 21 October 1977, " After your conversation with John Casani at Jet Propulsion Laboratories, JPL has agreed to loan us the mock-up of the Voyager, to be used as part of our set as the interior of the Alien Spaceship [note: indicating that the name V'ger had not yet been conceived at the time] . Joe Jennings and Matt Jefferies attended a briefing in JPL last night in the Voyager and Joe Jennings will return there next week with Bud Arbuckle to get measurements so that we can incorporate this large full-scale mock-up into our plans for the set." ( Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series , p. 52) The text commentary on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Edition DVD even stated that JPL was willing to even go a step further and loan the production an actual engineering duplicate of the Voyager spacecraft, but the studio declined, saying that the risk of the duplicate being damaged on the set was too high.

The William Shatner novel The Return , in which Kirk and Picard join forces to lead an assault on the Borg homeworld and end the recent Borg/ Romulan alliance once and for all presents the theory that a Borg transwarp conduit consumed the probe rather than a black hole, and that the planet seen by Spock was in fact, the Borg homeworld . The suggestion continues that the Borg assimilated the probe, yet the assimilation went "afoul" and changed Voyager 6 into a more sentient being.

Star Trek: Legacy presented the theory that the 20th century Borg civilization was a peaceful race. When V'ger encountered them, they studied its programming, repaired the probe, and sent it on its task. When V'ger returned to the Sol system it could not find its creator, but "a biological infestation." The probe returned to the Borg homeworld and joined with them, and its programming propagated throughout the Collective . Something of a civil war broke out. Massive amounts of knowledge, including the location of Earth, were lost in the resulting conflict, and the Borg of the 24th century were born.

In Star Trek Online , the mirror universe counterpart of V'ger , known as "the Other", is encountered in the 25th century. The probe at its core is known as Conqueror 6 , sent out by the Terran Empire in the 20th century to find new worlds to dominate.

• A river is a stream of water which flows in a channel from high ground to low ground and finally to a lake or a sea. The place where the river originates is called its source and the place where it ends is called its mouth.
• The route or course of a river has three stages—the upper, middle and lower stages. In the upper stage the river is in the mountains, in the middle stage it flows over plains, and in the lower stage the river generally meets an ocean or a sea.
• Almost all human activities generate waste which causes pollution.
• Untreated liquid waste from kitchens and toilets of households, liquid wastes from thermal power plants, surface run-off from farms and oil spills are the main causes of water pollution.
• Water pollution causes diseases such as typhoid,cholera and amoebic dysentery.

• Liquid waste from thermal power plants should not be discharged in the rivers. As It increases the dissolved oxygen content of river water,leading to a sudden rise in microbe population. This, in turn, reduces the level of oxygen in the river and makes it difficult for other kinds of organisms to survive.
• Surface run-off should not be discharged in the rivers as Surface run-off from farms carries organic and inorganic fertilizers into water bodies. This promotes the growth of algae, which reduces the dissolved oxygen level in water. Other living organisms in water bodies, including fish, cannot survive in such conditions.
• By not discharging the Untreated liquid waste into the rivers. Untreated liquid waste from kitchens and toilets is often discharged into rivers. This exposes people who use river water to diseases such as typhoid, cholera and amoebic dysentery.

Question 1. Name the major water bodies on earth. Answer: The major water bodies on earth are oceans, seas, lakes and rivers.

Question 2. What is the Ring of Fire ? Answer: The pacific ocean is bordered by volcanic mountains on its edges. So it is termed as ‘Ring of Fire’.

Question 3. What is the difference between a gulf and a bay ? Answer: A gulf is an inlet of the sea of large areal proportions while a bay is an open, curving indentation made by the sea or a lake into a coastline. Gulfs are more indented than bays and also more enclosed.

Question 4. What do you understand by strait ? Give an example. Answer: A strait is a narrow stretch of water that joins two large water bodies. The Strait of Gibraltar, for example, connects the Mediterranean Sea to the North Atlantic Ocean.

Question 5. Mention the five Great Lakes of the USA. Answer: The five Great Lakes of the USA — Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Erie—are a group of five huge freshwater lakes located between the United States and Canada. They comprise the largest body of fresh water on earth.

Question 6. Name the different parts of a river. Answer: The two main parts of a river are its source (from where the river originates) and the mouth (where the river enters the sea).

Question 7. What is surface run-off ? Answer: Surface run-off means the water from any source i.e. rain, river, etc which carries away the upper layer of soil, organic and inorganic fertilizers and make it a part of water cycle.

Question 1. Why are oceans important ? Answer: Oceans are very important for us for many reasons :

• Oceans are great storehouses of oil and mineral resources.
• They support a large variety of aquatic life.
• They facilitate international trade by providing trade routes.
• Oceans are also a source of food supply for many people around the world.

Question 2. Describe the course of a river. Answer: The river passes through three courses from its source to mouth – upper, middle and lower. The upper course generally lies in mountains where land is steep and river flows very fast. At middle course the river speed decreases as plains have gentle slope. The flow of the river is nearly halted at its mouth (where it meets the sea or ocean).

Question 3. Mention any five important rivers of the world, Answer: The river Nile in Africa, 6,695 km in length, is the world’s longest river. It flows out into the Mediterranean Sea. The Amazon, 6,640 km in length, flows through South America and is the second longest river in the world. Other important rivers in the world are the Mississippi in the USA, the Rhine and the Danube in Europe and the Ganga in India.

Question 4. Briefly describe the importance of rivers. Answer: Importance of Rivers — Rivers are an extremely important water resource:

• The river valleys and plains provide fertile soils and crops grow in plenty in and around the region,
• River water is used for human and animal consumption. Rivers provide abundant water supply to support large settlements.
• Rivers provide means of transport to carry humans and goods from one place to another and thus facilitate trade.
• River water is an important source of energy. It is used to power hydroelectric plants and helps in generation of electricity. It also thus helps the industries to grow.
• Rivers also provide the means for recreational activities.

Question 5. What are the major causes of water pollution ? Answer: The major causes of water pollution are liquid waste from thermal power plants, surface run-off, untreated liquid waste from industries, sewage, household waste and oil-spills.

Question 6. What is an oil spill ? Why is it harmful for the environment ? Answer: When the crude oil gets leaked into the sea while being transported from one country to another because of an accident and hurricanes it is called oil – spill. The aquatic life gets poisoned as oxygen can’t reach them and leads to their death affecting the life cycle.

Question 1. Describe the characteristics of the largest ocean in the world. Answer: Pacific ocean is the largest ocean and covers one-third of the globe. It is circular in shape and is bordered by volcanic mountains and is termed as ‘Ring of Fire’. The deepest part of earth i.e. Mariana Trench lies in this ocean near the Philippines.

Question 2. What are the differences between an ocean and a sea ? Answer: Ocean :

• Oceans are large water bodies covering 97% of earth’s water.
• There are main 5 oceans eg. Pacific, Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Southern Ocean.
• Sea is a part of the ocean that is smaller and shallower, located close to the edge of a land mass or continent.
• There are many seas eg. Caribbean sea, Bering sea, Arabian sea, North sea, etc.

The cruise line separates the different categories (Inside, Oceanview, Balcony) into subcategories. The only difference in the subcategories is usually location on the ship. The detail above shows subcategory color, category name, and subcategory name. For detailed information, mouse over a cabin on the deck plans and a pop up window will appear. You will find diagrams, pictures and information about that cabin category including square footage and features. Royal Caribbean has the most complicted and most difficult to understand category coding of all the major cruise lines. Its complicated because some cabins can be classified many different ways, sometimes without rhymn or reason. In some cases they also use the same color to denote two different categories. They use a number followed by letter to denote the type of cabin. Cabins are ranked from the lowest number first to the highest number and also from the lowest letter first to the highest letter. Therefore a category that begins with 1 is consider a better cabin choice than one that begins with 3. The type of cabin is defined by the letter that appears after the number. Letter V defines a inside cabin. Letter T defines a promenade view stateroom. A Boardwalk view balcony uses the letters I,J. Oceanview cabins are defined by letter N. Spacious oceanview cabins by the letter M. Panoramic oceanview cabins are defined with the letters P and L. Letter S defines a boardwalk view cabin. Spacious balconies are defined by the letter B. Regular balcony cabins use the letter D.
