How To Make Your Travel Jar A Success

travel jar ideas

WANDERLUST // WEDNESDAY

I have had a travel jar since I was seventeen years old. When I got back from a high school trip to Italy with my mom and grandma, I knew that I wanted to spend a lot more time traveling. It started out as something I just threw my loose change into at the end of the day and has grown into a full-blown method that is a major part of how I save for all of my trips. I have been explaining my methods to Matt, and he decided to take on the travel jar challenge while I was in Southeast Asia for 101 days and the results he had were so awesome that it really inspired me to write a more detailed post on what makes my travel jar successful and I even have Matt to prove it!

SubstandardFullSizeRender-3

⋙ The How To:

» Get an actual jar or tin- Being able to physically see it fill up is honestly a rush!

» Create a method of “paying yourself” that works for you- What’s that vice you’re ready to give up? Eating out daily? That Starbucks coffee you can’t start your day without? Now’s the time & what a better motivation to quit spending that money than to pay yourself each time you choose the budget option?

» What’s my method?

» I still pay cash for just about everything and put my loose change in the jar everyday.

» I put $1 in the jar for each meal, snack or coffee-type beverage that I prepare myself.

» Matt and I will be implementing a new one that each date we have for $5 or less we each put $1 in the jar.

» I put 10% of my paychecks into the jar – this came a little later in my travel jar escapades, but it definitely makes that money add up quickly.

» If I use coupons, I put the money I saved into the jar.

» When holidays or birthdays roll around I put as much of that money from my grandparents into my jar as possible- usually it’s all of it.

» If you sell something on Craigslist or in a garage sale, put at least half of that money into your jar.

( All of this may seem like a lot, but to be honest, once you start you don’t really miss it & it just becomes part of your daily routine.)

» Be sure to track your progress- Choose whether you want to add this up weekly, bimonthly, monthly, whatever! But be sure to add it up. Matt and I add ours up on Sunday nights – a tradition he started when I was in Southeast Asia. It feels good to see those totals and how close you are to your next dream trip.

arrow

Speaking of Matt, he was truly the inspiration for this post. We had a conversation the first day of my trip about my travel jar, and since we’re planning on trying a RTW trip in the next year or so, he decided now was the time to start our travel jar. In the 101 days I was gone Matt saved up $564.41 ! I am so proud of his dedication to our trip and I asked him which of my tips he used to save this money. He said for every meal he ate that was less than $5 he put $1 in, he started using cash more often and putting his change in at the end of the day and he sold a couple of things he didn’t use anymore and put that money in as well.

SubstandardFullSizeRender-2

How cute is my fiancé rockin’ the travel jar?!

It’s amazing what a handful of change here, a few dollars there, and doing simple things in your life to cut back costs can allow you to save in a short amount of time!

I hope these tips will help inspire you to start that travel jar ( using any of these ideas or creating your own ) and stay motivated to finally buy that plane ticket, plan that road trip or take that getaway.

* A special thanks to Matt for taking these photos and being awesome!

How To Make A Vacation Jar

How To Make A Vacation Jar

I don’t know about you but I tend to keep all of the receipts, ticket stubs, and maps from my travels. I will hold on to these keepsakes and usually put them in a shoe box. I’ll look at them maybe once or twice a year. It wasn’t until I read a blog post on Domestocrat  that I decided to ditch the shoe box for vacation jar. I thought that making a vacation jar was such a neat idea. That I made a vacation jar of my own. Rather than put my travel mementos in a show box where no once can see them. I decided to display them in a vacation jar. Keep reading to learn how to make a vacation jar.

I have this insatiable desire to travel the world. So I don’t know how many vacation jars I will end up with or where to put them all. I recently took a trip to  Canada . When I got back I made a vacation jar filled with all of the things that I had collected from my trip. If you haven’t already, read my blog post on the three Souvenirs that I look forward to getting whenever I travel.

The jar that I used is actually from the coconut oil that I buy at Target. It comes in a glass jar with a really simple silver top. I decided to use this jar because it was a good size. The edges are rounded rather than squared like you find on most mason jars. Also, the silver top matches with all of the silver accents that I have in my house. I found a similar Mason Jars on Amazon.

Below is a photo of everything that I collected from my Canada trip. I’ve also included a photo of the finished vacation jar after I put everything in it.

How To Make A Vacation Jar

  • The map of the city of Toronto that I got from the City Sightseeing Tour.
  • The map of the guided tour I took in Casa Loma
  • My boarding pass from Fort Lauderdale to Toronto.
  • My ticket from visiting the CN Tower.
  • The Map of the train to the City.
  • The brochure I received with my ticket to the CN Tower

In the middle.

  • My Hotel Key
  • A keychain I picked up from the Teaching Winery. I stopped there with a tour group for a wine tasting before going to see Niagara Falls .

My vacation jar collection has grown to include the Dominican Republic , New York , and Puerto Rico . I filmed a video for my  YouTube channel to compliment this blog post. Click the link below to watch me construct a vacation jar.

The Best Travel Containers (Hint: They’re Not Travel Size)

Support TFG by using the links in our articles to shop. We receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you) so we can continue to create helpful free content. We earn from qualifying purchases made to the featured retailers. Thank you, we appreciate your support!

Worried that you won’t have enough space for your toiletries and beauty products in your carry-on? We have the answer and they’re not travel-size! These are the best travel containers because you pack only what you need. Find out what they are, where to get them, and how to use them!

Set of 10/15/20 Gram Cosmetic Pots

Individual Pots

These are my favorite types of travel containers! I love using individual pots for items like my concealer and foundation . I don’t need to use a large quantity and they usually come in a heavy glass bottle so decanting them saves weight too. I’ve found these to be the best travel containers for small quantities.

If you need to bring toiletries like soaked cotton rounds or makeup wipes, some TFG readers use these leakproof condiment containers which have a wider diameter. A super creative option that works really well!

Use a capsule wardrobe to pack light but create many outfits.

Set of 3/5/10/15/20 Clear Cosmetic Pots

  • How to Use Them: Use them for makeup and beauty products that you won’t need often and to store individual products that you want to take in your purse. (A stack won’t do so well thrown around in your day bag or purse.)
  • When to Use Them: Anytime. These travel containers  can store your bath products on short trips or on longer trips for items you won’t use often.
  • At home: Have you ever used a concealer container with a pump that gives you more than what you need? Stop wasting product. You can decant the liquid or gel into one of these containers so you only get a dab of what you’ll use.
I like using the  5 gram size  for concealer, eye cream, and face scrub while I use the larger  20 gram size  for toothpaste, foundation, or face wash

best-travel-containers

Stackable travel container

Stackable Pots

This is my ultimate secret for fitting various toiletries into minimal space. Stackable pots will work extremely well for women who use a variety of different beauty products or have an extensive skincare routine.

  • How to Use Them: Use one stack for shampoo/conditioner/body wash and another stack for face moisturizer/body moisturizer/sunblock
  • When to Use Them: Use this strategy for weekend trips and take just what you need or if you have a longer trip and plan on buying products as you go – use the stacks for products that last a long time such as foundation , eye cream, or face moisturizer.
  • At home: Use these travel containers to store jewelry, and crafts, or to consolidate half-empty products and make more room on the shelves.
Available as an individual stack or in various sizes (better value!)

best-travel-containers

GoToob travel bottle

Cylinder Soft Tubes

I prefer pots to tubes but sometimes you need a little more product or a different type of cap. These are durable but soft containers and are a fabulous choice. They tend to be leakproof and long lasting making them the best travel containers in comparison to hard, plastic bottles. GoToob is the most popular brand and has a convenient 2 fl oz size. Other popular tubes are those from the Dot&Dot store. Or, you can also pick up this 14-pack travel set that has silicone squeeze bottles AND  includes 3 pots and 2 toothbrush covers!

  • How to Use Them: Have several of each container type so you can play Tetris and make the most of the room in your toiletry bag. Use them for runny, thin liquids or for products you’d prefer not to dip your finger into.
  • When to Use Them: On trips of any length based on the products that just aren’t quite right in a pot.
  • At home: Using the same principles as the pots, you can maximize limited storage room in your home by decanting any product – even cooking items too!

Kitsch Toiletry Pouch Set

Flat Toiletry Pouches

Flat pouches are an amazing option, because they can fit a lot, but don’t take up any extra space if you don’t need to fill the container the whole way. They’re slim and flexible yet super secure and leakproof. What’s great about these handy space-saving containers is that the more you use, the smaller they get, so you’ll have more room in your suitcase on the way back!

These Kitsch pouches come in a set that can be bought on their own, or grab the 11-piece set that includes pots, pumps, and a spray bottle! Readers have also highly recommended this YSUOA 12-piece set of clear pouches that come in 30ml, 50ml, and 100ml sizes.

One reader says, “For decanting liquids, I used refillable pouches on my two last trips overseas. They worked well because they pack so flat.”

  • How to Use Them: Use them for liquids that you’ll be using often, like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as they’ll hold a decent amount.
  • When to Use Them: Anytime, from weekend trips to long-term stays. They can store a great amount and pack slim.
  • At home: Save tons of space in your drawers or cabinet by decanting products from your bulkier bottles into these cute ones!
Take a look at our top ten toiletry bags !

When using your own travel containers, remember these golden rules:

  • Only fill 2/3 of the container in order to avoid compression leaks
  •  Use a piece of saran wrap under the lid for extra leak prevention
  •  Avoid water-like substances such as toner. The thinner the liquid the more likely it is to seep through.

Three more space saving “better than travel size” toiletry ideas:

  • If you’re short on time and are always on the go, Convenience Kits sells one-time use toiletry sets. Buy a set and you’re good to go!
  • These bulk packs are another good idea if you want to make your own one-time use sets.
  •  And when you don’t have any more room for liquids just use some of these liquid-free wipes !

This article has been super helpful!!

Just got back from a 21-day trip – five countries! I used many of the suggestions for decanting my toiletries. My favorite is using the lip balm tubes. They are easy, potable and inexpensive. I have lotions, creams, oils etc… go into your purse or toiletry bag. I’m telling everyone!

Robin James

Thanks for the great information!! I used the stacking pots on my recent 2 week trip to Colorado. Love your blog!!

Jeanne K

These are great for travel!

Cammy Agraz

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Margaret Stalzer

Great article on decanting for B longer trips, best trip n I’ve ever B learned!

Donna T.

I love the idea of using smaller containers for toiletries. My favorites are the chap stick containers and the contact lens cases. The contact lens cases are great because they stay closed and never leak. I’ve actually put clear gel Secret deodorant/antiperspirant in a chap stick container and it was enough for a 10 day trip! I am able to fit all my daily products and make up in my toiletry bag with no issues. I also have a set in my 5th wheel so I am always ready to take off in a moments notice! Thanks for all the great ideas and links!

Carol Morris

I never thought about using these small pots for use at home, but that has now changed especially for tossing in my purse when I’m short of time. Thanks!

Alison

I love the idea of decanting products into the small pots. I was having trouble fitting everything in my 3-1-1 bag. After reading this post I ordered some different size pots to use for my facial moisturizer, hair styling cream, cream blush etc. it’s amazing how much space was saved by using these pots!

Runa

One of the first things I learned from this blog was decanting products into smaller containers for traveling light. It has been a game changer for me and one of my now normal things I do. Thanks for this amazing blog full of tips and tricks!!

Robin Polito

After reading all of these suggestions, I actually purchased contact lens cases from Amazon and packed for my 3 week safari using them. Game changer!!

Rebecca Nunez

The packing list link isn’t opening for me.

Alex

Hi Rebecca, sadly we are having some access issues on the blog and are having problems solving it. 😕

But you can download TFG’s “Toiletry Packing List” right here 💻 : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1993OivQaG9Nk4_Avu8Jzo-EzkIMfTiEM4ZXQ4CoKdGM/edit?usp=sharing&urp=gmail_link

To edit this packing list, you have two options: OPTION 1: Go to “File” in the menu above and “Make a Copy”. Open the file you copied and edit that file. OPTION 2: Go to “File” in the menu above and “Download As”. You can then download the file as an spreadsheet and edit directly in excel. To print this packing list, go to “File” in the menu above and “Print”.

Hope this helps. If you have any other problems please email us at [email protected]

Lindsey

I decanted my spf facial moisturizer into a pot and when I was using up the last of it, I noticed the plastic had changed texture. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be worried about continuing to decant into this container?

Hi Lindsey, I have personally never had an issue with this so I am not sure if you should carry on using the same container. I think this has happed to a few of our other readers though. I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there about: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. ?

Stephanie

Same thing happened to me. I read online in another forum that it’s the sunscreen that reacts with the plastic. I read suggestions that it won’t react with nalgene plastic (I have not tried this personally yet). They sell these in travel size at the Container Store and on Amazon.

Regarding packing liquids: I always use plastic wrap under the top. If it’s an “oily or greasy” type product, I use a snack size ziplock bag to hold each. I either use ziplocks in addition to cubes when I pack, or I take an assortment of them so I can easily pack for a day trip or overnight stay without having to take a large bag with me.

Hi Terri, thank you for taking the time to share how you like to pack your liquids with us, your travel hacks are fantastic!! 🙂

sue

as im watching the packing cubes video, where are the socks, undies. bras packed? thanks sue

Hi Sue, have a look at this TFG article for some help: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-packing-cubes-8-step-strategy-to-travel-carry-on-only/ Hope you find it useful! 🙂

Cindy Woo

Can anyone recommend small spray bottles that don’t leak for hair products?

Hi Cindy, thank you for your question! Have a look at the recommendation for small containers on this TFG article: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-travel-with-perfume/ Also I have gone ahead and published your question on TFG’s facebook page to get you the best suggestions. Our readers have the best tips so keep an eye out for their replies from Friday: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ hope this helps!! 🙂

I am traveling to Ghana in June. This is my first international trip and I will be gone for 3 weeks. I’m anticipating checking 1 bag but want to pack my toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and stuff) but would rather not re-purchase them in Ghana. Any suggestions

Hi Sharon, thank you for your comment! We have a variety of articles featuring different ideas for travel toiletries. Take a look: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-toiletries/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/downsize-toiletries/ Hope this helps. Have a wonderful time 🙂

Does anyone know where to find lightweight swimsuits without the awful foam cups they all seem to have? I am trying ( rather desperately!) to find a suit that will pack flat! I could also do without all the multiple heavy layers that most suits seem to have these days. HELP please??? Connie

Hi Connie, thank you for your comment! Take a look at this post https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-swimwear/ Hope you find it helpful 🙂

Hi Alex, I finally found those swimsuits at “ Title Nine” last year. I think the weight was about half of those I’d tried before. I ended up with all mix and match…with black or blue bottoms (one is the paddleboard short), and two colorful tops. All work very well!

Stephanie Anderson

Connie, have you looked at Lands End?? Their “tugless tank” swimsuit is just the ticket…comes with or without cups. Otherwise, if you want a simple one-piece suit, check out a sporting goods store for a Speedo or Arena swimsuit. During the warm months, Costco often has a large quantity of these suits for sale.

Ellen

How do you label the containers? From one trip to the next, I do not remember what is in each container. Everything I have tried gets wet and peels off.

Linda

I have a Brother P-Touch labeler. It has several size choices for printing labels. The trick to keep the print from rubbing off is to put a piece of wide packing tape (like scotch tape, but wider) over the label. It works for anything, except items going directly into the shower.

alex

Great idea Linda!

Jacqueline

THANKS!!! That was my question also!!!

Meghan

I use a sharpie on the outside or top of the lid. Once I’m back home, I wipe it off with some rubbing alcohol.

Diane

I’m a nurse, and I use the white paper tape meant for wound dressing. It’s a great all-purpose tape for travel. You can write on it with a sharpie, and still read the words even after it has been in the shower. The tape is easy to remove when you are done. I normally keep a sharpie and a roll of paper tape in my kit instead of duct tape. Check your Dollar Store for paper tape in the medical section.

Connie Qualey

Hi, I usually use the P-touch since you can make the letters very small. I also leave a bit of extra tape on each end so the ends overlap on round bottles and pots. Hope this helps…. Connie

Jennifer

Loved the tip on stackable and individual pots! I ordered them through the link – but got the ones with colored lids – pink and purple, woo hoo!

Great idea! Love using different colors 🙂

Joanna

This is sort of a random question, but have you ever successfully packed coconut oil without having it leak and get your other toiletry bottles all greasy? If so, what containers have you used? I only need a very small container for it – it’s my face moisturizer and I use only a tiny amount every day. I’ve tried small pots, and I’m not sure what brand they are as I got them as a gift a long time ago, but they have leaked every time no matter how tightly I screw on the lid. Recently, I tried using a plastic travel bottle – the type you would normally use for shampoo – and just unscrewing the lid to dip my finger in… it only leaked a little, but it’s way too large, and it’s also not exactly convenient to have to try to stick your finger into one of those bottles when the oil is solid, haha.

Any thoughts on pots or other small containers that would be easy to access but leak-proof even when the oil melts?

Hi Joanna, I use the small pots featured in this post to travel with coconut oil. However, I have the cold pressed kind that’s in solid form not liquid. A tip is to place saran wrap between the pot and the lid – it keeps liquids from leaking 😉

Gin

get it as unrefined as possible and just freeze it in a gootube use the saran wrap trick. By the time it melts you will most likely be at the hotel if you pack it right. I made it on a 16 hour flight in a hot September (From Atlanta) this way. It was 75% solid when I used it the next morning, no leaks.

I have a few empty half-ounce bottles which originally held hand sanitizer. They have a secure top, and are tiny. If you were to warm the oil slightly, it would melt enough to decant into the container. Coconut oil is liquid at body temperature. If the oil is solid, you could melt it by running water from the hot tap over the bottle. I normallly use a one-ounce Nalgene bottle from the mountain supply store. I always use a piece of plastic bag or Saran under my caps for flying.

Kimberly

I use screw top contact lens cases for my eye and face creams, foundation, concealer, and any other “liquid” makeup item. They are small, typically won’t leak, and very packable. I have been doing this for years

Great idea Kimberly!

Kimberly, Ditto here! I mostly use tinted gel type make up, so one lens container has two colors of gel blush with the other carrying two shades of face gel. A little of this stuff goes a long way if ( as I do) applied with water and moisturizer at the same time. No leakes at all! For the rest I save every tiny bottle of eye drops etc. for lotions, shampoo and conditioner.

Lisa Kathleen

The GoToobs are terrible, actually. 🙁 They leaked from about the third time I used them, but I kept giving them another chance since I haven’t had time to find other containers. This time I arrived at my destination with the contents of all three containers everywhere. I’ve lost a huge quantity of product and had to clean up progressively larger messes.

oh no that’s too bad. the best way to avoid spills is to only fill any bottle 3/4 and add a piece of saran wrap in between the lid and the bottle. see if that helps out 🙂

Miss Downtown NYC

I use 3 oz. containers from U.S. Plastics. Inexpensive, commercial grade, wide mouth/easy to refill.

Travel Fashion Girl

Great tip! Thank you for reading!

Phebe

I love the Go Toobs – after 3 years, the tops were no longer clicking shut tightly. I checked online to see if I could just purchase the tops. Turns out the Go Toob company has a lifetime guarantee for their products, so I emailed them and they sent me a batch of new tops! How amazing is that!!!!

WOW even more of a reason to love them!

Making Memories Last with a DIY Memory Jar

A man is holding a couple of photos in his hands

Memories are a precious thing. Whether they're from a special day, a significant event, or just a moment in time, they're the things that stay with us forever. Unfortunately, our memory is not always reliable, and it's easy to forget even the most meaningful moments. That's where the memory jar comes in. A memory jar is a special way to keep all those cherished memories safe and to preserve them for years to come. In this article, we'll explore different types of memory jars and provide you with ideas and actionable steps to create your very own.

Benefits of Creating a Memory Jar

Before we dive into the process of creating a memory jar, let's discuss the benefits. A memory jar is not just a decorative item, but it's a physical representation of the moments that matter most to you. When you fill it with little mementos and keepsakes that bring back happy memories, you're creating something that reminds you of all the good times in your life. Here are some benefits of creating a memory jar:

  • Emotional Benefits : A memory jar can reduce stress and provide comfort during difficult times. Having a tangible representation of the happy moments in your life can help you focus on the positive and bring a sense of calmness and joy to your life.
  • Creative Benefits : Creating a memory jar is a fun and rewarding DIY project that allows you to express your creativity. You can choose your favorite colors, styles, and themes, and create a unique piece that reflects your personality.
  • Keepsake Benefits : A memory jar is a perfect way to preserve your memories for years to come. It's a keepsake that can be passed down from generation to generation and an opportunity to share your special moments with others.

Types of Memory Jars

Several colorful bottles and jars

Now that you know the benefits of creating a memory jar, let's explore the different types of memory jars you can make.

  • Themed Memory Jars : Themed memory jars are a great way to organize memories by event, personality, or theme. For example, you can create a memory jar of all your favorite summer activities, a memory jar that showcases your travel memories, or a memory jar of all your favorite quotes and affirmations.
  • Seasonal Memory Jars : Seasonal memory jars are perfect for seasonal celebrations, such as holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries. You can decorate the jar with seasonal ornaments, colors, and objects to create a festive atmosphere.
  • Event-based Memory Jars : Event-based memory jars are ideal for capturing important events in your life, such as your wedding, graduation, or the birth of a child. You can use the memory jar as a guestbook, have guests leave messages, and fill it with different items such as photographs, ticket stubs, and other keepsakes.

How to Create a Personalized Memory Jar

A table full of colored paper scattered around

Creating a personalized memory jar is easier than you might think! Here are some actionable steps to create your very own.

  • Brainstorm Ideas : Start by brainstorming ideas for your memory jar. What types of memories do you want to capture? What themes or motifs represent your personality and style? Write down your ideas and reference them throughout the process.
  • Collect Supplies : Once you've decided on a theme, gather all the necessary supplies, including a glass jar, decoration elements such as stickers, ribbons, or paints, and writing materials such as pens or markers.
  • Add Personal Touches : Personal touches can make your memory jar unique. You can add an engraved message to your memory jar or decorate it with photos or other specific items that hold a special meaning to you.
  • Fill the Jar with Memories : The final step is to fill your memory jar with memories! Choose items that represent your theme and display them in the jar. You can add small trinkets, ticket stubs, photographs, or any other souvenir that holds sentimental value.

Creative Memory Jar Ideas

To give you some inspiration, here are a few creative ideas for different types of memory jars:

  • Romantic Memory Jar Ideas : For a romantic memory jar, fill it with love notes, dried flowers, and photos of you and your significant other. You can also decorate the lid with a heart-shaped trinket or an engraved message.
  • Family Memory Jar Ideas : A family memory jar can include pictures of each family member, tickets to family events, and other mementos that represent happy times spent together. Decorating the jar with a family crest is also a great idea.
  • Travel Memory Jar Ideas : For a travel memory jar, fill the jar with photos, ticket stubs, postcards, and small souvenirs from all the places you've visited. You can also decorate the jar with a globe or travel-inspired ornaments.

Tips for Maintaining Your Memory Jar

Now that you've created your memory jar, it's important to maintain it properly. Here are some tips to keep your memory jar in perfect condition:

  • Regular Upkeep : Make sure to clean your jar regularly by dusting it off and wiping it down with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Displaying Your Memory Jar : Display your memory jar in a place where you can see it often and enjoy the memories it holds. You can put it on a shelf or use a stand to showcase it on a table.
  • Sharing Your Memory Jar : Share your memory jar with loved ones and friends. It's a great conversation starter and can bring joy and happiness to everyone who sees it.

Creating a memory jar is a great way to preserve all your favorite memories and create a unique keepsake that reflects your personality. Whether you choose to create a themed, seasonal, or event-based jar, the process is fun and rewarding. Remember to add personal touches and fill the jar with items that hold a special meaning to you. By taking the time to create a memory jar, you're making sure your favorite memories last forever. DIY: Travel Memory Jars

travel jar ideas

I’m kind of obsessed with how nice they look on our shelves with our new set of those gorgeous Penguin Classic clothbound series books (designed by the talented Coralie Bickford-Smith). I debated painting the lids with a matte gold craft paint, but don’t want to fuss to much with them, so I left as is.

IMG_1180_hires

Once we have a larger collection, I’d love to display them all on shallow bracketed shelving, en masses for visual impact. But for now, I love that I can group them here and there in high-traffic areas of our home. Who doesn’t love a little reminder of a wonderful vacay or trip during the day-to-day?

How To Make Travel Memory Jars:

I used quart size “Ball” canning jars leftover from a pickle-making endeavor this summer, but I think Mason jars or even something smoother, like these , would work really well.  Ideally, you just want to use the wide-mouth, not the standard jars so any oversize or awkwardly-shaped items can be easily places inside; you never know what you’ll pick up on a trip.

IMG_1210_hi-res

Some of the contents we’ve filled ours with include: post cards, sand, sea shells, ticket stubs from vacation activities, drink umbrellas, champagne and wine corks and hotel key cards. I’d heard that it’s bad luck to take sand or rocks from Hawaii, so I included things like menus, the flower leis from our arrival, and sand from our beach bags — I figured that wasn’t stealing! The jar looked a little bare, so I may have supplemented with some things from beaches back home. Shh! No one needs to know. It’s all about getting the vacation feeling across.

While looking for project inspiration, I came across so many really cute ideas. Here are two of my favorites:

Alphabet Frame Vacation Craft Idea

Maybe I’ll branch out to some of these other ideas in the future, but for now, I’m pretty happy with my little jar vacay capsules. I guess I have a special spot in my heart for jars ever since Brian made this little “vacay” jar for me to keep on my desk when we worked together at W.B Mason. I grinned like a fool when I first saw it:

Today it sits on this in our office with my style and fashion books and every time I look at it, it still makes me smile. Just like our new vacay memory jars.

DIY Beach Memory Jar with Photo

Create your own diy beach memory jar with sand, shells, and a favorite picture from your last beach trip and keep those fun summer memories alive.

(THIS POST PROBABLY CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS. OUR FULL DISCLOSURE POLICY IS LONG & BORING BUT, YOU CAN FIND IT  HERE .)

Create your own DIY Beach Memory Jar with sand, shells, and a favorite picture from your last beach trip and keep those fun summer memories alive! | We Three Shanes

Create Your Own DIY Beach Memory Jar

I love the beach so much!  Even though I am almost 40, I still have to collect shells when I am there.  It’s like it’s ingrained in my DNA or something.

My daughter has picked up on this and also has to collect shells now.  It’s a fun thing we do together on our beach trips. Because we are both shell collectors, we end up with a LOT of bags of shells laying around the house and garage.

Shells do you no good sitting around in bags so I have discovered a lot of fun DIY projects to do with them, like the DIY mermaid sugar scrub post I helped Kim with last week. Now, I have another awesome shell craft for fellow collectors like myself, a Beach Memory Jar.

We recently went to Florida on vacation and our friends were there with us.  I decided to collect some sand from the beach in a water bottle because I knew I wanted to make a sand memory jar.

All the girls got to work finding shells.  We love finding the tiny ones but also the pretty and colorful ones.  Any shells will work for this project so collect the ones that catch your eye. Once I got home, I went to work on my photo jar.

How to Clean Shells

First things first, when you get home you need to clean those shells off. They can be covered in bacteria and algae and can start to smell bad. If you stick shells in your memory jar without cleaning them, things can start to grow in them making everything yucky.

There are two popular methods for cleaning shells. The first method for cleaning shells has you soak them for several hours in bleach water.  The second method has shells soaking in baking soda and salt water.  I decided to try both.

Learn how to clean shells so you can use them to make a cute Beach Memory Jar. | We Three Shanes

Baking Soda and Salt Method

Put warmish tap water in a glass dish and add a tablespoon of baking soda and a pinch or two of salt and stir.  Then I dumped my shells in and let them sit for 30 minutes. The water was pretty gross after so I think this method worked well.

Once I pulled the shells out I rubbed them really good in a rag to get anything off that was still stuck.  The amount of time this takes depends on how many shells you are cleaning and how big they are.

Bleach and Water Method

After trying the baking soda method for cleaning shells, I tried the bleach one. I started a new bowl of water and added a couple of splashes of bleach.  I’m not big on measuring people, but you want it to be about 2/3 water and 1/3 bleach.

You can let them soak anywhere from an hour to two days.  I am kind of a lazy crafter.  I set mine in the bowl and ran to Costco to shop and then came home and rinsed them off.  I ain’t got time to let them soak for three days.

I ran fresh water over them for a minute or two and then laid them out on a towel to dry.  Both methods worked great so you can decided which one you’d rather try.

Learn to how to properly clean shells and then make them shine for this DIY Beach Memory Jar with photo. | We Three Shanes

After the shells were all dry, I put the pretty ones I wanted to use on a piece of cardboard.  Then, I sprayed them with a clear gloss to give them a shine.

The brand I used was Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer .  I always have a can of this lying around the house for crafts.  Let those dry and now you are good to start your beach memory jar!

Assembling Your DIY Beach Memory Jar

Grab a glass jar. Any jar will do. Keep in mind the size of your photo and the shells you want to use. Make sure they will all fit nicely in the jar.

I go through a lot of jalapeños and pickles at my house so I often wash out the jars and re-use them.  I love a good upcycle craft! This particular jar is oval shaped which I thought would be perfect for seeing the picture really well.

Grab your favorite beach photo, sand, and collected shells and make this DIY Beach Memory Jar to remind you of your fun summer vacation! | We Three Shanes

  • Start by filling the bottom of the jar with sand.
  • Then grab your printed out picture and push it down into the sand right where you want it.
  • Next, place the shells in the jar where you want them.  Add as many or as little as you want.  I tried to push the shells into the sand in a particular order so you could see certain shells better.
  • Once you have everything in place the way you like, put the lid on.
  • Lastly, I used my Silhouette , which I freaking love, to cut out vinyl for the state, date, and name of the beach.  If you do not have a Cricut or Silhouette machine, you can use a permanent marker, or maybe a paint pen instead.

And voilà!  I love this simple project.

How to Make Your Jar Look Extra Pretty

I love this project because it is very versatile. I painted the lid to my jar a nice beachy blue color but you can do whatever you want.   You can also glue a shell, star fish, or silver dollar to the top of the lid.

Tying some twine or white rope around the neck of the jar can also add some texture and a nice nautical touch. You can even add some beach colored beads to the twine or a shell charm or keychain from the trip.

I know not everyone collects sand from a beach trip so you can just as easily fill the whole bottom with shells and leave the sand part out. Beach glass would also make a beautiful addition to your photo jar.

Save Memories with a Photo Jar

What do you think? Aren’t these beach jars adorable?!  I just love them.

Make those summer memories last with a DIY Beach Memory Jar. It's the perfect, simple craft project to use up all those shells you've been collecting! | We Three Shanes

Don’t forget that this memory jar is glass so you’ll want to be careful where you put it.  My memory jar is up on my mantle above the fireplace so it can’t be accidentally knocked over.

I plan on making another jar for my friends as well. I have plenty of shells and I feel like this would make a great gift for them.

What do you think?  Would you make a DIY Beach Memory Jar with shells you’ve collected?

What other things can you think of to add to this craft?  If you think of something, let us know in the comments.  We love hearing feedback.

Love this! The last thing I made with sand was in a shadow box which I sealed to keep the sand from leaking out. I’ll be trying this idea next. I have the shells cleaned and a bottle of sand ready to go. Thanks!

Learning to pay cash for everything to prevent going into debt takes practice. Sometimes leaving that money in savings makes it too easy to spend on other things. When you want to splurge on a family vacation you need to protect that savings. A DIY travel fund savings jar is the perfect solution.

Before we get onto the tutorial I have some bad news. I lost the entire folder of photos for this project. After a day of fruitlessly trying to retrieve it from some unknown depth of my computer and a night of tears over the loss, I had decided not to share it.

However, this beauty sits on our mantle every day and I absolutely love it. It is such a fun piece of decor and is helping us stay on track with our vacation savings. I have decided that I’m going to share it with you anyway.

Eventually I will get around to finding another jar to remake the project. Then you can see photos of the creation process. Until then, you can use the easy directions below to create your own. Don’t worry. It’s incredibly easy to make.

Upcycled glass travel fund savings jar

  • Giant Glass Jar (mine is a pickle jar)
  • Travel Themed Scrapbook Paper
  • Letter Stickers
  • 1 inch Foam Brush
  • Spray Acrylic Sealant
  • Tan Cording
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

First, make sure that your jar is thoroughly cleaned. This will help the paper and stickers adhere better to the jar.

Next, cut out a sheet of travel themed scrapbook to create a fun scene. I decided to keep the plane and the clouds from mine. The rest, I removed from the page.

Paint Mod Podge directly onto your jar with your 1 inch foam brush.

Then place your paper cut out to your jar over the Mod Podge.

Add more Mod Podge to the top of the paper to help it mold to the jar.

Next, add your letter stickers to the jar to spell out “Travel Fund”.

Immediately cover your stickers with additional Mod Podge.

Continue covering the rest of your jar with Mod Podge up to the lip of the jar.

  • You want to cover the back of your jar as well as the decorated part so that all of the glass has the same milky look.
  • Pay extra attention to the edges of the paper and the letters.

[bctt tweet=”Stop blowing your vacation money online with a DIY travel fund savings jar!” username=”diyadulation”]

Allow your Mod Podge to dry completely before moving on.

After your Mod Podge has dried, seal your jar with acrylic sealant and allow it to dry. This makes it a durable and long-lasting piece for your home.

Cording glued to jar lip

Once your sealant has dried, glue your cording around the lip of your jar with hot glue.

Step 12 (Optional)

If you have some cording left over, braid it into a faux handle for your job and knot each end.

Step 13 (Optional)

Lastly, glue your “handle” to the lip of the jar with hot glue.

You can see why I decided to share this DIY travel fund savings jar with you despite the lack of photos. It is such a cool piece and will help you on your frugal journey. Now you can toss extra change into it to save up cash for vacation. You can also do what I do, which is take any leftover allowance I have at the end of 2 weeks and toss it in.

Your travel fund will be growing in no time. Seeing it displayed beautifully in your home every day will help you keep your eyes on the prize, too. Where will you go with your new travel fund?

See where I’m linking up!

40+ best DIY travel gifts with an image of crafty items

Super simple travel DIY ideas

#1 pillowcases or bed sheets.

Two pillow cases with handwritten text on it

This is actually one of the travel DIY projects that I did for my first-ever solo trip abroad when I went to study in the US. Though, technically I didn’t really “craft” anything. All I did was buy two pillowcases and ask all my friends and family to write something for me.

It was a great way to have a tangible piece of home and read all the heartwarming messages they left for me while I was abroad. It was the best pick-me-up I could wish for whenever I would feel homesick.

So whether you’re looking for a DIY travel gift or just a keepsake for yourself, buying a pillowcase or bed linen and asking friends and family to write you a message is a super simple and fun way to go about it.

#2 Clothing with messages or DIY decorations

The back of a white t-shirt with "Mallorca" handwritten

In line with the previous idea of the pillowcase, you can actually apply that to any type of clothing.

It’s a travel craft that works both as a gift and for yourself (and make it a heartfelt gift for yourself).

Just buy waterproof textile markers, a shirt, a hoodie, or whatnot , and make sure you bring it when you’re saying goodbye to friends and family before a trip.

Another really awesome variation of this is to bring a blank piece of clothing and markers with you on a trip and ask the people you meet along the way to leave you a message. By the end of your trip, you will have a personalized and heartfelt souvenir. Me and my friends actually did this years ago on our trip to Mallorca and I still have this shirt to this date.

Not sure what items you could use? Here is some inspiration

#3 Decorate or personalize other travel items

A stainless steel water bottle

Another really simple DIY travel craft is to buy something tangible and then decorate it.

The key here is to buy travel items that you (or the traveler whom this gift is for) will actually take on the journey. Then all you need are waterproof markers, a needle and thread, paint, or anything else to decorate it.

Here are some examples of typical travel items that you can easily decorate and turn into a DIY project. For some of these items, there is also a more advanced DIY option down below. But I figured we would start really easy before getting to the hardcore project.

  • Water bottle
  • Sleeping mask
  • (Sun)glasses cases
  • Fanny packs
  • Toiletry bags
  • Makeup bags
  • Packing cubes
  • Luggage tags
  • Neck pillow

#4 Money in a bag

Mini vacation in a bag

Now, I actually saw this idea on Etsy when I was crafting my funny travel gift guide , but honestly, you could just recreate this at home.

All you need is some sand, shells, a paper umbrella, a plastic bag, and a funny tag that you can easily make yourself.

#5 DIY money gifts

A suitcase and two airplanes origami from cash

As boring as it may sound, money is actually the best gift for travelers. But since most people don’t enjoy giving cash, I created a list of 76 epic ways to give money .

So if you are looking for a practical DIY travel gift that the recipient will actually use, then pick one of the unique cash projects from that list. The ideas range from super-duper simple to highly creative (and time-consuming) options, so pick whatever suits you and the occasion.

For one of my friends, I actually made this suitcase and airplanes because she was going on a long-term trip.

#6 diy packing cubes.

A blue packing cube with clothes

Packing cubes are super handy bags that help you to organize your luggage in such a way that you can actually find it and that it fits neatly in a backpack or suitcase.

But did you know that you can just make them yourself?

Pick a nice fabric or your favorite color (or the recipient’s) and follow Melly Sews’ instructions to make your own packing cubes.

#7 Passport cover

A passport holder

Protect your most important travel document in style with a self-made passport cover!

Now, it is made with leather which adds a little extra layer of difficulty because of its sturdiness, but if you follow Lovely Indeed’s instructions you should be able to work it out just fine.

#8 Camera strap

An embroidered camera strap

Nothing beats a handmade gift, especially if it’s a beautiful and practical one, such as a camera strap . It’s the perfect travel DIY idea for photography lovers, that will allow them to carry a bit of home around their neck whenever they take their cameras out.

There are two beautiful DIY options here, one made with cotton webbing and another made with a scarf . They’re about the same level of difficulty, so just pick whichever design you like best.

#9 Various bags

A blue small string bag

You could probably make about a thousand different DIY bags for travelers , so I am not going to list them all here. Instead, I selected three awesome sites with instructions for the three most practical bags for travelers; string bags, pouches, and tote bags.

  • Brit.co made a tutorial on how to make a simple string bag at home
  • A Kailo Chic Life has a step-by-step guide to making cute fruit-themed pouches
  • Pretty Handy Girl made a list of 21 ways to make your own tote bag

#10 Jewelry roll

A colrful jewelry roll for travelers

Learn how to make your own jewelry roll and transport your precious accessories safely on the road with Haber Dashery Fun!

I would say, it is a bit more of an advanced travel DIY idea, but if you’re willing to properly sit down and take your time for it, anyone can make this at home.

#11 Sleeping mask

A pink silk sleeping mask

We discussed the simple DIY version of a sleeping mask above; buy a blank one and decorate it with textile markers or paint.

If you’re looking for a more crafty version, check out Martha Stewart’s DIY sleeping mask tutorial.

#12 DIY travel neck pillow

A neck pillow for travel

A neck or travel pillow is an essential travel item for those who often take long-haul flights, buses, or trains. If you want to catch some sleep, this is a must.

And there is nothing better than sleeping on a DIY travel neck pillow !

So check out Instructables for a tutorial on how to make one yourself. One little extra tip from me before you start, don’t be frugal with the stuffing. It’s the sturdiness of your pillow that will determine how well you will be able to sleep with it.

#13 Travel toiletries wrap

If you are looking for a cute DIY travel gift idea, then a toiletry roll with travel-sized toiletries is a fun option.

There are two options that I select for you, one with and one without sowing. I think they are equally nice, and (if you know how to sow) equally difficult.

However, if you’re not great with a needle and thread, the Instructables no-sew option is probably the best for you. Otherwise, check out The Yellow Bird House for a beautiful sown travel wrap.

#14 Scrunchies

A blue and a white scrunchie

Scrunchies are super cute DIY travel gifts for little girls, teens, and grown-up women. You can vary with the type of fabric and colors you use, depending on who the scrunchie is for.

Check our Hey Wanderer Blog for the full instructions

#15 DIY travel wallet

A red passport wallet

A DIY travel wallet is a slightly more advanced project, but with Instructables free printable, and a step-by-step guide, it’s doable for any level crafter.

Pick a color or design you like, and you will be able to keep your passport and money safe in style!

#16 DIY travel cable organizers

A black travel cord organizer

If you like to keep stuff organized, or if you travel with a bunch of cords, cables, and earphones with cords, DIY travel cable organizers are a fun project for you.

There are quite a number of different DIY travel cable organizers online, so I’m going to leave it up to you to pick the best one for you from DIY Candy’s list .

#17 Luggage tags

A plain black leather luggage tag

The easiest way to make a DIY luggage tag is by decorating a plain one. However, you can also get a lot more crafty and make one from scratch. The Spruce Crafts gathered the 16 best DIY luggage tag ideas , so have a look and choose whichever one you like best (or whichever one you think you can make yourself).

#18 Sunglasses case

A green pot holder

Now, before you start with this DIY travel craft for your expensive high-quality sunglasses, let me give you a fair warning.

This is not the most sturdy case, and it probably won’t provide the very best protection for expensive sunglasses. So if you are looking for a high-quality case to properly protect your sunglasses, I would advise you to buy a hard case and decorate it to make it your own.

But if you are like me and often travel with a cheap pair of sunglasses too, this is a fun travel craft idea to protect them a little more.

Here is what you do.

Buy a square-shaped potholder, fold it in two, check if your sunglasses actually fit inside, and sew the bottom and the sides. You can vary the size a little bit by sowing more closely to the end or a bit more inward, which will make your sunglasses fit more loosely or tight.

#19 DIY coupon book

DIY vouchers for people

This is one of my favorite DIY travel gifts, in fact, I made a coupon book l ike this for my parents when I left for another one of my long-term trips. But it works as a gift for travelers as well as for those staying behind.

Simply come up with a list of cute favors and then check out my full guide on making your own coupon book .

DIY travel accessories & jewelry

#20 necklaces.

A woman making a necklace

And because I could not possibly choose between all these amazing DIY travel accessories, I’m just going to let you pick yourself. Head over to DIY Joy’s list of 31 unique necklaces to make at home.

#21 Bracelets

A collection of selfmade bracelets

The same can be said for bracelets, which is why Pillar Box Blue’s list of 51(!) different homemade bracelets is by far the best source of inspiration if you are looking for a DIY bracelet.

A woman making a ring herself

Looking for a unique ring for travel lovers? Then DIY Craftsy’s list is your go-to source.

They’ve gathered the 45 most beautiful DIY ring ideas for you to try at home.

#23 Earrings

A set of selfmade earrings

Regardless of whether you’re looking for cute homemade earrings for yourself, or to give to a traveler to take on to their next destination, you will find a beautiful (and doable) design on I Always Pick The Thimble .

#24 Keychains

A selfmade keychain from rope

The last DIY travel accessory may not be as exciting as necklaces, rings, and bracelets, but they are practical nonetheless.

With a DIY keychain, you can give a small personalized, and heartfelt keepsake that any traveler can take on a trip. Whether they’ll attach it to their suitcase or backpack, with your homemade keychain they will always have a piece of home with them.

Check out The Creatives Hour for a whole range of different DIY keychain ideas.

Travel DIY ideas for your home

A deck of travel guides

I know, in the mind of a traveler it’s always travel time. But on the odd occasions that you need to know the actual time, what better way to show the time than with a DIY travel-inspired clock ?

My favorite one by far was a clock made from travel guides by Instructables . Because honestly, my bookshelf is filled with old guidebooks that I probably won’t use again, but that I love too much to throw away. So this is a unique way to put them to practical use.

Another great option is to make a clock with travel photos. For that check out the It’s Always Autumn tutorial on how to make a clock with one photo.

Alternatively, head over to Wonderful DIY to make a clock with multiple photos. Their design is actually for family photos, but obviously, you can easily adopt that to travel photos.

#26 DIY travel wall ideas & photo displays

A wall with a photo display

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with all your travel photos, check out It’s Always Autumn’s list with 20 different and unique DIY travel wall ideas.

I probably could have filled this entire list with a hundred or more ideas of DIY things to do with your travel photos , but personally, I think that It’s Always Autumn has done a great job at selecting the 20 most beautiful ones to try at home.

#27 Vacation jar with photo

Who couldn’t use a vacation in a jar?

Whether you’re treating yourself with these travel DIY projects or you’re actually looking for gift inspiration, everyone deserves a little holiday at home, and with a vacation jar and photo holder you can easily create that at home!

All you need is this guide from Left on Peninsula Road , a small jar with a cork lid, a cute photo, a paperclip, and some sand and shells to fill the jar with holiday vibes and you’re all set.

#28 DIY travel scrapbook

Our adventure scrapbook

Are you looking for a way to organize all your travel photos, tickets, and other keepsakes in a way that you will be able to look back at it every once in a while?

Go for a DIY travel scrapbook. It’s basically a photo album but with a little more creativity and freedom to add whatever you want to the book.

If you’re struggling to start from scratch or just want an example. Check out Martha Stewart’s list of scrapbook ideas, or buy the adventure book from Amazon. It comes with blank pages, but at least the cover is already done for you.

#29 Keepsake box

A wooden keepsake box

Another fun way to store your keepsakes is in one of Marta Stewart’s travel box DIY projects.

Basically, you just need a wooden box like the one in the photo, some paint, and you can decorate your keepsake box in the theme of whichever country you visited.

#30 Planter with a flag design

Are you looking for a fun DIT travel craft idea to add more green to your home?

Then try Pretty Handy Girl’s flag planter box !

Her example is the American flag, but you could paint it in the color of any flag. Or just make multiple planters and collect the flags from all around the world to create an international green home.

#31 Food from a country they love

A pot of paella

Are you a great cook ? Then prepare the recipient’s favorite international food and recreate the taste of travel right at home!

Whether it’s that special pasta they had in Italy, a curry from Thailand, or the best taco they had in Mexico, if you know how to make it right, they will be filled with delightful memories (and flavors).

Are you not much of a cook yourself?

Don’t worry, you can still give really awesome DIY food gifts for travelers , check out the two next options.

#32 Cookie jar mix

Three mason jars with cookie material fillers

Alright, so you may not be the star in the kitchen, but you can be a star in giving by creating a DIY cookie jar mix of their favorite international cookie or other food!

Whether it’s for Italian Biscotti, French Madeleines, or Dutch Speculaas, all you need to do is fill the jar with the exact amount of ingredients layer by layer, print the recipe, and tie it to the jar with a ribbon and you’re all set.

#33 Travel-themed gift basket

A Christmas basket with food and Christmas ornament

Gift baskets always make great DIY gifts for anyone, and travelers are no exception to that.

Now, I can imagine that you might struggle a bit with deciding what to put in a DIY travel-themed gift basket , so to help you out I wrote a guide filled with awesome travel-inspired gift baskets. Some are pre-made (in case you decide to ditch the whole DIY idea and just go for an easy and quick gift), but it also includes a list of fun DIY basket ideas that travelers will love.

And if you need help with arranging your basket, and making it look pretty, then I’ve got your back too! Check out my guide on how to make gift baskets at home .

#34 Refurbished vintage suitcase

I’ll finish the home travel crafts with the most advanced, but therefore also the most unique option; a vintage suitcase side table!

In theory, it sounds quite easy. But as with most DIY crafts, it usually takes longer than you initially expected, but it’s well worth the effort.

I mean, what’s cooler than having a refurbished vintage handmade side table ?

Map-inspired DIY projects

#35 photo map.

A map of the unites states with photo framses for US states.

Of course, there is no list of travel DIY ideas without map-inspired ideas.

There is something magical about maps that makes them awesome for DIY projects and travelers.

The first option is a beautiful (and more advanced) DIY photo map, like the store-bought one from the photo. But to make it yourself, follow Cut Craft Create’s instructions . The example is a US map, but you could use it for a world map, or any country or continent.

One side note though, once you’re getting closer to completing the map, it might be a bit harder to cut the right shapes and fit them on the map. My advice is to cut the photos a bit smaller, in the end so that it fits more easily.

#36 Scratch maps

Scratch maps are the number-one maps for travelers. Nothing more soothing than scratching off all the places you’ve ventured before and dreaming about the ones to come.

But now, you can make a scratch map from scratch ! (Sorry, couldn’t help the pun).

Check Instructables for a step-by-step tutorial. And I must say, this was actually a lot easier than I expected.

#37 Heart-shaped map

Photo frame with maps shape like a heart

Heart-shaped maps are actually a super popular wedding and Valentine’s gifts and many people pay a significant amount of money to get one. But you can easily make them at home.

Check out House of Mahalo for the full instructions. In short, get a black cardboard the size of a photo frame. Cut out the shape of a heart, find a map of a place that has a special meaning to you or the recipient, and place it all in the frame.

#38 More heart-inspired maps

Looking for more heartwarming DIY travel craft ideas? (Yes, pun intended).

Then Welcome to the Mouse House’s heart world map is the perfect project for you.

It’s also a super fun activity to do with kids and infect them with the travel bug from a young age.

#39 Magnets

A fridge filled with magnets from around the world

Are you or the recipient an avid fridge magnet collector? Then add a DIY map magnet to the collection.

There are various different ways to go about it, but I selected two of my favorite ones. The first one is made with “glass rocks” and the second one with a miniature photo frame .

#40 Globe-themed projects

An image of a vintage globe

Like maps, globes have a special attraction for travelers (probably because it’s the representation of everything they love), so any globe-inspired project is a fun DIY travel gift.

DIY Candy gathered some of the best globe-inspired projects from around the web, so check it out for inspiration

#41 Christmas ornament

Bring the travel vibes into the holiday season with these cute map-themed ornaments .

They are made from mason jar lids and are actually really easy to make.

#42 Map-themed lampshade

A lampcase made from a vintage map

The last map-inspired DIY travel craft is a super awesome lampshade !

I’ll admit, it’s one of the more advanced options, and I would probably only recommend making this one for yourself and not as a gift, unless you add a lamp that actually fits the shade and you’re certain the recipient truly loves this style.

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles: Editor Tested, Leakproof, & Reusable

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles Editor Tested Leakproof Reusable

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Beauty and skincare products like shampoo, moisturizer, and face wash are essential on every packing list , whether you're heading to a hotel or are staying with friends or family. Since buying miniature versions of your favorite products can be expensive—and typically means purchasing a whole lot of single-use plastics—having practical and reliable toiletry travel bottles you can pull out for every trip is a must.

To make sure the reusable bottles we're throwing in our Dopp kit are easy to use and don't leak, we tested out a variety of affordable travel sets to see which ones actually get the job done. Below, you'll find 13 of the best travel toiletry bottles that will protect the contents of your luggage—and all of the creams, soaps, and serums you've shelled out for—and keep you organized on the go. Even better, all of these picks are TSA-friendly in size, so you don't have to worry about any of your favorite products being thrown out at the airport. As an added bonus, many of these travel bottles are available on Amazon Prime, so you can get your hands on them quickly before a last-minute getaway.

How we tested

I scoured the internet to find the most popular travel toiletry bottles—searching a variety of retailers, reading hundreds of reviews, and considering online ratings. After my initial research, I put many reusable toiletry bottles to the test, trying out dozens of options that range in price, size, and design. I've had some of these toiletry bottles for over a year and they've accompanied me on a mix of weeklong vacations in checked luggage and short weekend trips in tightly-packed duffel bags .

Over the last several months, I tested another batch of options: I've filled them with a variety of skincare, hair care, and body products—thick body wash, contact solution, and leave-in conditioner included. I've even left these filled containers upside down overnight to see if there were any unexpected leaks. My findings: There are many great options on the market to choose from and you don't need to break the bank to find the perfect set for you. Below, the best travel toiletry bottles to pack wherever you're headed next .

Our top picks

  • Best overall: Tocelffe 18-Pack travel bottles
  • Best for easy packing: Cadence The Capsule Flex System
  • Best for in-shower products: LiquiSnugs silicone travel bottles
  • Best for perfume: Vonovo mini refillable perfume bottles
  • Best for contact solution: Cauyuan portable contact lens case

Hair and body wash, cleansers and serums, contact lens care, a variety of products.

travel jar ideas

No matter how organized I try to stay, my bathroom counter at every hotel always becomes cluttered with my many toiletries and hair products . The LiquiSnugs look like your classic silicone travel bottles, but they feature a clever suction cup on the back that allows you to stick them onto any shower wall—freeing up limited counter space. These are great for in-shower products like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. This set of four bottles features two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles, so you can choose how much product you need depending on the length of your trip. Another smart design feature: Twist the top to adjust the label name so you won't forget what's inside. I've had these for about a year now and I consistently reach for these to pack shampoo and conditioner.

Pros : The unique suction cup design makes them great for shower products.

Cons : These occasionally will fall off shower walls if there's not a little bit of water to keep them in place.

travel jar ideas

This Amazon bestseller is versatile enough for every type of traveler. The 18-pack from Tocelffe features four silicone bottles of varying size (two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles), four small jars for creams and serums, two spray bottles, two spatulas, a funnel, labels, and a cleaning brush. These all come in a waterproof toiletry bag that you can reuse to carry makeup or tech essentials. In this set, I find myself mostly reaching for the ultra-soft silicone bottles, which are great for products like body wash, face cleanser, and micellar water. Each of these bottles feature three-layer leak-proof tops so you don't have to worry about spills in your bag. Something I love about these bottles is how they can be bent and squeezed easily to get every last bit of product out of them.

Pros: Very affordable, comes in a clear toiletry case, and the bottles' wide opening makes it easy to refill. Cons: The small plastic jars are not as reliable as the silicone bottles in this set.

travel jar ideas

If you're just looking for a few affordable no-frills travel bottles, these are for you. Available in a variety of colors, the silicone bottles do just what they say they will. They're leakproof, come in a set of four, and are easy to refill and clean. While there’s no bells and whistles, these three-ounce bottles pleasantly surprised me with just how much product they fit compared to some of the other classic silicone bottles we tested, making them an ideal option for a longer vacation. Plus, these have an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 11,000 global reviews.

Pros: Versatility; available in many colorways

Cons : This set doesn't come with labels or a proper toiletry case.

travel jar ideas

Another solid choice for travelers is this set of four 3-ounce silicone travel bottles. These are squeezable, leakproof, and versatile enough to use for everything from shower products and soaps to sauces and baby food. These reusable bottles are all the same size and each a different color so you can differentiate them. Bonus: This set comes in a transparent toiletry case to keep them all organized in.

Pros : This set is available in a dozen colorways; wide opening makes them easy to refill without needing a funnel. Cons : This set doesn't come with labels.

travel jar ideas

If you prefer to bring along a bar of soap instead of using what's provided at the hotel, this compact soap box is a great travel companion. Inside, there's a soap mat that absorbs any excess water and prevents the soap from becoming mushy. I've used other plastic soap cases before without a mat and it always leaves a mess. This one features a silicone band that wraps tightly around the box for extra protection, and is about the size of a deck of cards.

Pros : Fits most commonly used soap brands, affordable, and features a simple-to-use design.

Cons : The soap box needs the band to stay secure so be careful not to lose it.

travel jar ideas

I've been a fan of Cadence's capsules for a few years now. These leakproof, airtight, and watertight magnetic capsules are unlike any other travel bottles I've used and are a true game changer when it comes to packing your own beauty products. The individual capsules magnetically snap together to take up as little space as possible in your Dopp kit and are designed without any right angles or edges, so you get every last bit of product available.

The original .56-ounce individual capsules are great for weekend trips and storing small items like daily vitamins and safety pins. The Capsule Flex System allows you to customize your own bundle with your choice of small , medium , and large sizes, as well as The Extender —an add-on that allows you to increase the size of the bottle when you need more room. This makes it so easy to customize your travel routine, whether you want to pack extra product for longer trips or bring enough body wash for you and your travel buddy. With The Flex System, you can still choose your own label for each capsule (the labels are interchangeable), as well as the color and number of capsules in your bundle.

Pros : It's easy to get every last drop of product inside each capsule and they are so easy to rinse out and reuse. The custom labels can be swapped out depending on what you're packing.

Cons : These are the most expensive option on our list.

I was eager to test out the Ries travel bottles after hearing a lot of buzz about the product and seeing them make their way into retailers like Sephora and Goop. These are a more elevated, aesthetically pleasing take on the classic reusable travel bottles you may have used in the past. Ries prioritized sustainability and design with these essentials: Each bottle is made from recycled plastic and features a large opening at the top, which makes it easy to refill and clean (not to mention, they're dishwasher safe). Travelers can purchases these bottles individually (a 3.4-ounce bottle or a 1.7-ounce bottle) or in a set with both sizes . My favorite thing about these bottles is the airless pump—I feel so glamorous while doing my nighttime skincare routine with these, and it makes it easier to use products like face wash or cleanser on the road. The bottles are pre-labeled (shampoo, conditioner, body, face) and you can twist the top to the side to conceal the opening, so product won't spill out.

Pros : Sustainably made; if you prefer a pump, these are for you.

Cons : On the pricier side; the bottles are a bit bulky and take up a little more room in my makeup bag than most travel-size products I use.

travel jar ideas

Finally, a solution to my contact lens woes. I can't count the number of times I've stopped into a drugstore to buy a mini bottle of contact lens solution before heading out on a trip, or to pick up rewetting drops because I'm dealing with dry contacts while away from home. This compact case makes cleaning and caring for contacts on the go much easier—it comes with an easy-to-fill reusable dropper that gives me a long weekend's worth of solution, a contact case, and has a mirror to help get them in and out. (I don't like to fly in contacts, so this is particularly handy if I forget to switch to my glasses before leaving home.) It weighs next to nothing, and will fit in all but my smallest handbags, so I've been keeping it on me regularly, not just when traveling. — Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Pros : It comes with a tiny pair of tweezers to make removing contacts from the case less messy. Cons : The contact solution holder isn't large enough for weeklong trips.

travel jar ideas

I admit I've also been guilty of buying mini versions of my favorite contact solution. As much as I love reusable toiletry bottles for my skincare and hair products, I've never had anything that felt right for the consistency of my contact solution. I wear daily lenses, meaning I don't need a whole lot of solution with me when I travel, so it is a little frustrating to carry around a bottle that takes up precious space in my Dopp kit. Lately, I've been carrying about the Cauyuan eye glass case which comes with a super small dropper for contact solution. This refillable dropper holds just enough contact solution for weekend trips and shorter vacations and takes up such little space (I've even found myself tossing it in my handbag in case my eyes get a little dry.) This durable case keeps all of my eye care essentials together and protected, with a separate compartment for eye glasses, and another that holds the dropper, tweezers, a contact case, and a mirror.

Pros : All of my eyewear essentials are now in once place and stay organized; the dropper is small enough to fit in a tiny purse. Cons : The compartment for your eye glasses is on the small size—if you have thick or bulky frames, they might not fit.

travel jar ideas

I've never found a reusable spray bottle for my perfume that I've liked, so I've always relied on buying miniature versions of each of my favorite fragrances. But let's be real—those travel-size perfume bottles are expensive! They're often made of glass, too, making them vulnerable to breaking in your luggage. Enter the Vonovo mini refillable perfume bottles: Each of these holds 0.2 ounces of your favorite scent, more than enough for a long vacation. This set comes with five spray bottles, so you can bring along any of your favorites—or all of them. And they are so easy to use—simply pull off the top of your full-size perfume, press the bottom of the mini bottle on top of it, and keep clicking until its refilled. Each of the bottles have a clear vial inside so you can see how much product you have left. My favorite part: These are so tiny—think the size of a lipstick— meaning I can even bring them with me on a date night when I'm only carrying a small purse .

Pros : Easy to refill and compact enough to fit in even the tiniest of travel bags Cons : These spray bottles wont match the look of your full-size perfume and don't have labels, so you'll have to remember based on the color of the mini bottle you choose. Also, these can be refilled with the same perfume, but I wouldn't recommend reusing them with another scent.

travel jar ideas

For those with a more rigid skincare or haircare routine, this 16-pack lets you bring along every last product you want—and it all fits into one reusable case. The set comes with four silicone bottles, four jars, two spray bottles, two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush. The variety means you can pack everything from soap and shampoo to serums and sprays in here, and the cleaning brush makes the bottles easy to clean and re-use. I like this set best for packing my more expensive skincare serums and creams in the small jars that have a scooper to use.

Pros : A variety of types of containers

Cons : The toiletry case the bottles come in isn't the best quality.

travel jar ideas

The Kitsch Ultimate travel set includes leakproof holders that are compact and lightweight enough to pack in a purse or tote bag . In addition to three flat pouches, this set also comes with two pump bottles, two mini jars, one mini funnel, one mini spatula, and one mini pipette. This set is best for a longer trip—say, a European vacation or a cross-country road trip —as you can store a lot more shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in the pouches without going over any TSA limits (plus, they'll get lighter as you use them).

Pros : The flat pouches are easy to pack and take up less room in a Dopp kit than bulkier bottles.

Cons : The pouches are a little bit harder to refill than bottles with a wide opening.

travel jar ideas

If you're packing toiletries for your entire family , this 21-pack of travel bottles has you covered. This package comes with four silicone bottles, four cream jars, four toothbrush covers, two spray bottles, two pump bottles, two trowels, a funnel, and labels to keep everything straight. Whether it's a trip to Disney World or multi-generational cruise , this set makes packing for the whole family easy.

Pros : These come with toothbrush covers–a nice travel accessory that none of the other options on our list offers.

Cons : Not ideal for weekend trips or light packers.

41 No-Cook Meals for Your Next Travel Adventure

We’ve challenged ourselves to come up with the easiest dishes to prepare on a trip. You’ll love these no-cook meals for traveling!

travel jar ideas

Let’s be real … nobody wants to cook on their vacation. However, it isn’t economical to eat out every meal, and if you are off the grid camping, then you can’t anyway. Luckily, there are lots of great no-cook meals for traveling out there! They might take a bit of preparation beforehand, and you’ll definitely need a cooler or refrigerator of some sort, but it can be done!

While the options for minimal-cook or prepare-before-hand meals are endless, we are going to challenge ourselves today. For this guide, we will only use only recipes that you need absolutely no heat source for, once you’re on the road.  That’s not to say, you couldn’t modify some of them to make even better meals cooked over a campfire or stove—like s’mores!

App-Guided Travel Adventures

While you’re traveling, don’t forget to download our app and search for nearby scavenger hunts ! Each adventure is designed to help you get to know new places and learn fun facts. Search through hundreds of tours , pub crawls , art walks, and ghost hunts and find one perfect for you!

No-Cook Breakfast Meals for Traveling

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day right? It certainly is if you plan on taking a long hike or spending the day in one of the blazing hot national parks of the Western United States. While packaged doughnuts are totally an option, let’s what else we can find!

1. Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are a simple and nutritious way to start the day. All you need is something to keep them cold. There are a million ways to make overnight oats.  Most recipes call for milk of some sort, your favorite nut butter, and then embellishments. For a banana bread flavor, try oats, almond butter, milk, cinnamon, and maple syrup. Mix, and allow to sit in the refrigerator or cooler overnight. You want your mixture to be fluid and runny, as the oats will absorb the milk overnight. Add cut bananas in the morning and enjoy! Many people choose to add flax seeds, yogurt, or chia seeds for extra protein. There’s no wrong way to do it, whatever ingredients you have on hand will do!

2. Peanut Butter Protein Balls

Chilled peanut butter balls are not only an amazing-tasting snack but they’re also packed with protein and all the sugar you need for a long hike. You can make them before you leave the house, and just throw them in the cooler. Five easy ingredients of chocolate chips, ground flaxseed, peanut butter or other nut butter, honey, and oats are all it takes for this perfect camping trip power breakfast.

3. British Bean Bites

Sounds weird to Americans, but the brits eat cold beans and bread for breakfast all the time. Open a can of baked beans and served atop crunchy french or focaccia bread! The British version would be more akin to Showboat Pork and Beans than saucy baked beans. They’re usually in a thin, tomato sauce, not a sweet, thick BBQ sauce.

4. Yogurt Parfaits

Low-sugar yogurt is packed with healthy protein. Add a little granola and fresh fruit for a complete breakfast. We love this one because the ingredients are available at pretty much any grocery store and can be used for other quick meals as well. A large can of rolled oats and a big tub of original Greek yogurt should be on everyone’s packing list for a road trip or camping trip.

5. Boiled Eggs

This is the one cheater on the list. You’ll have to cook them before you leave, but boiled eggs are valuable to have around. You can at them on their own, or use them in several of the recipes on our list. Boil a batch of 12 before you leave the house, and they will keep for a few days in the cooler. Eggs will keep you full for a while, have healthy protein, and pack easily. Just peel and eat! Plus, you can use them for several of the other recipes on our list.

6. Bagels and Cream Cheese

Don’t know about you, but there’s nothing much better than an “everything bagel.” Pack a brick of cream cheese or goat cheese in your cooler, and you are good to go. You can top with blueberries for some extra anti-oxidants, or sprinkle with un-salted sunflower seeds for a little extra belly-filling protein.

7. Banana and Peanut Butter

It’s simple, but it’s effective. Just beware with this one if you are sensitive to sugars. Bananas are a high sugar item, so you might consider pairing them with organic nut butter with no extra sugar added. Add a glass of your favorite milk, and you are good to go!

Better yet …

8. Banana Cereal

Nope, we don’t mean put bananas on your cereal, we mean make banana cereal. This was grandma’s specialty. We loved it, and your kids will love it, assuming they like bananas. Cut up the banana in thin slices, sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon and douse in milk. Eat up!

9. Avocado toast

There’s nothing you can’t do with the superfood avocado. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it will show up everywhere on this list. It’s easy to pack, easy to find in most stores, and works to eat by itself, as a garnish, or as a spread or dip. It truly is a superfood. Since you likely won’t have a toaster, and it’s not as good on untoasted bread, consider grabbing some English muffins from the store. Mash your avocado a bit, making it soft. Spread over your muffin. Shred some of your boiled egg over the top and add a few diced tomatoes or spicy salsa … breakfast of champs!

10. Muffins

One of our favorite road trip treats is Otis Spunkmeyer Chocolate Chocolate Chip muffins. There is just something about them that screams wreckless vacation abandon!

11. Chia Pudding

Like overnight oats, chia pudding can be made beforehand and kept in the refrigerator. A good chia pudding base only needs 3 ingredients: Chia seeds, milk, and something sweet. For a little extra flair, combine chia seeds, your favorite milk, pureed strawberries, or another berry, and a bit of yogurt. Let it sit in the fridge overnight, and the chia seeds will suck up all the liquid, expand, and turn into a kind of gelatinous pudding. Top with almonds and coconut shreds or cacao nibs for the perfect treat! Add a bit of honey if you need some sweetness.

12. Just be gross, you’re on vacation

When all else fails, Poptarts are tasty. It’s not ideal on the health front, but there is no shame in having some easy, premade stuff on your vacation. While you certainly don’t want to eat 5 Little Debbies a day (well, you might want to, but you probably shouldn’t) it never hurts to have one. There’s nothing better to celebrate conquering that beast of a hike than a Cosmic Brownie. You earned it. If you are absolutely against big-brand packaged foods and all their harmful grossness, there are some stellar organic options out there for granola bars, breakfast bars, and even brownies.

No-Cook Lunchtime Meals for Traveling

Lunch on a trip needs to be quick, easy, and filling. If you are traveling alone, that’s super easy, but if you need to please a whole picky family, we don’t envy you. That job is much harder. Good luck to you! Hopefully, you’ll find something below that your clan will enjoy.

13. Charcuterie board

You’ll be the fanciest road-trippers at the RV park with this one. Cold cuts, salami, fresh cucumbers, cubed cheese, an assortment of nuts, grapes, and some tomato slices, and you have a lunch that not only fuels your body but looks super pretty! We love charcuterie boards because they’re easy to feed a lot of people with, and littles can come by and pick up a healthy bite as they play. It can be stuck in the fridge and pulled out later too, so it just works great.

14. Egg Salad Sandwiches

You still have those boiled eggs right? Turn them into yummy egg salad and slap it on a sandwich. Pair with some potato chips, and get back on the trail!

15. Good Old Peanut Butter and Jelly

Hey, don’t knock it. It’s an American classic, and it is tasty whether you are 3 or 93.

16. Tuna salad

Tuna salad is another protein-packed option that is easy to carry on the road. Buy some packets or cans, or better yet fresh tuna if you live somewhere you can get it. Add your favorite fixings. This tuna salad recipe with red onion, dijon mustard, and celery is super tasty! Serve with crackers or as a sandwich. It doesn’t get much easier. Tuna is handy to have around, as you can also add it to pre-bought pasta salads for a little extra protein or make tuna-stuffed avocados for dinner (later).

17. Chicken Caesar Wraps

Chicken Caesar wraps are one of the best backpacking recipes. Whether you choose to grab a rotisserie chicken at the store before you leave or go with canned chicken, either way, it makes for a delicious meal. This chicken Caesar recipe with whole wheat tortillas , parmesan cheese, and cherry tomatoes is simple and yummy!

18. Crab Salad

The grainy mustard and sharp cheddar in this creamy crab salad recipe make it extra delicious! However, like tuna or chicken salad, you can pretty much throw everything but the kitchen sink in a crab salad or put nothing but mayo, and it will be just fine in a pinch. Plop it in a pita bread pocket, and pair it with some fresh veggies, and you have the perfect lunch.

19. Berry Salad

Add a little extra beauty to your boring salad with some colorful berries.  Romaine lettuce topped with strawberries, blueberries, shaved almonds, and feta cheese or goat cheese is a quick, healthy camper lunch. Throw on your favorite dressing, we love this Brianna’s blueberry balsamic vinaigrette .

20. Pimento Cheese Sandwiches

Pimento cheese is one of those things that we rarely eat unless we are traveling. Grab a tub at the store and use it on sandwiches, crackers, or as a spread for fresh veggies. It also makes a good addition to veggie tortilla wraps, lettuce wraps, or pinwheels.

21. Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Here’s where those ten cans of shredded chicken you bought are going to come in handy. Chicken salad can be very plain or really fancy. We love this cranberry pecan chicken salad recipe ! For a healthier option, omit the bread and serve as a lettuce wrap!

22. Smoked Salmon Stacks

A few packets of pre-cooked salmon are also nice to have around for fish tacos, to throw on your salad for a little extra filler, or to make this tasty lunch treat. This flatbread salmon stack is an easy option that requires just a bit of meal prep, so you might want to start the night before. If that is too much work, just load up some Ritz crackers with a bit of salmon, a slice of avocado, and a dash of salt and pepper for a quick and easy lunch.

No-Cook Dinnertime Meals for Traveling

Dinner is probably the hardest category on the list, at least for Americans. We tend to save our largest meal for the end of the day, and we generally want something warm. So, a completely no-cook dinner is out of the normal for many of us (though sandwich or cereal night is certainly not unheard of in our house)!

23. Greek Salad

A traditional Greek salad is not only healthy and tasty, but goodness it is pretty. While recipes vary all over the Mediterranean and the Balkans, they generally consist of fresh diced tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, and sometimes bell peppers, red onions, and cucumbers. You can make it any way you want, with whatever you have. Toss in a little olive oil or vinaigrette and a pinch of salt. Magnifique!

24. Stuffed Avocados

This is one of our favorite no-cook camping meals. Split an avocado, and remove the pit. Fill the center with a plop of your favorite meat salad. Sprinkle with salt and pepper or paprika. You can use any of the meat you have, salmon, chicken, tuna. Use the leftover tuna salad from yesterday’s lunch. Another option is to make taco-stuffed avocados . All you need is a taco-seasoning packet to add to the meat and veg you already have on hand!

25. Crab Ceviche

Ceviche is a cold seafood dish, popular all over Central America. It is traditionally made with fresh fish, lime juice, peppers, red onion, and whatever else you have on hand at the time! You can use any of the packaged or prebought fish you have to create “ camping ceviche .” For a side dish, whip up some 7-layer dip and tortilla chips for a complete no-cook dinner!

26. Veggie Gyros

These vegetable gyros feature our favorite item-avocadoes, plus chickpeas and yummy tzatziki spread. Chickpeas are packed with protein and all these veggies will get you to your daily allotment of vitamins and fiber. For the meat lovers in the group, you can easily add chicken you have on hand!

27. Mexican 3-bean salad with guacamole

… Oh, sorry! Just dreaming about this Mexican 3-bean salad ! It might be a favorite meal idea on this list. Hiking and exploring make you hungry, and all the beans in this baby give you the fiber you need for a good night’s sleep! Pair it with fresh guacamole for the ultimate easy camping meal.

28. Layered Taco Salad

Take some of that chicken you brought and mix in some taco seasoning. In a large bowl, layer it with cheese, beans, lettuce, and crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos. Alternate your layers of each until the bowl is full. Let everyone choose their own toppings of guacamole, sour cream, and salsa.

Mexican food is the easiest no-cook dinner to make. Layer nachos with shredded canned meat, beans, and all the veggies and toppings you like! If you can warm your meat and beans, that’s great, but it is just as good cold!

Snack Ideas or Side Dishes

You’ll likely be more active on your vacation than you are in normal daily life. It seems most of us need a vacation from our vacation by the time we get home. So, you are going to need more fuel than usual. Plus, if you have kids in tow, then snacks are a primary food group (maybe the only food group)! Make sure you have some good ones on board!

30. Veggies and Hummus

Nothing super inventive here, but it’s easy and effective. Plus, you might get your picky ones to eat a carrot or bell pepper stick if it is slathered in yummy hummus or guacamole. You could make a big batch of homemade hummus before your trip, or make it easy on yourself and buy some tasty flavors at the store.

31. Trail Mix

No surprise here, trail mix is a great idea to have on hand. It fits easily in the backpack for long hikes. You can throw the bag at a kid in the backseat when needed, and it is filled with tummy-filling protein. Make your own trail mix , or snag a giant premade bag from Amazon before your trip!

32. Fresh-Fruit Salad

Nothing screams summer like a bowl of fresh fruit. This fruit salad with citrus dressing is delightful and is the perfect anecdote for that summer heat! You might even convince your kids to eat something healthy today.

33. Beef Jerky

Beef jerky just belongs in a backpack. They go hand in hand.

34. Pesto Pinwheels

Pinwheels are a classic party appetizer, but they also make a great one-bite snack. We love these pinwheels , but there are many great ones out there, so use what you have on hand! It does take a little bit of meal prep time as they need to sit in the refrigerator or cooler for several hours to set up.

35. Deli Rolls

Don’t know about you, but to us, there isn’t anything better than a slice of your favorite cheese, rolled up inside of a piece of deli meat. Admit it, you have done it. You can make it fancy with a hummus spread or olive-decorated toothpick! It’s quick, easy, filling, and budget-friendly. We love it!

No-Cook Snacks for Traveling

36. s’mores.

Okay, so the best s’mores require a little smoking on a campfire, but technically you can make them with uncooked marshmallows. They’re still super tasty!

37. To-Go Banana Pudding

The banana version is the best, but you can try this treat with any premade pudding cup of your liking. Crush a bag of Vanilla wafers. Add it to your pudding cup. Slice up a banana for garnish and plop a dollop of Cool Whip on top. Yummm.

38. No-Bake Lemon Tarts

Lemon pudding snack packs can easily be turned into a tart. Line a small bowl, or just make a pile of finely crushed Graham crackers. Slather on a healthy slab of cold lemon pudding, and top with your favorite whipped topping. Sprinkle on nuts or coconut shavings to taste!

39. Cottage Cheese and Dried Fruit

This one won’t please everyone, but if you love it, you love it! Cottage cheese has healthy fat and is a good source of protein. It will keep you full, and if you top it with some sweet dried pineapple, it’s pretty tasty!

40. Fresh Strawberries and Whipped Topping

Strawberries topped with a little sugar take on a totally different flavor! If you don’t use granulated sugar, honey works just as well. Slice them up, add your honey or sugar, and allow them to sit in a cold environment for at least 4 hours. If you want a lush dessert, stock up on some pre-made angel food cakes or make one at home before your trip. The decadent strawberry mixture on top of some food cake with whipped topping is a fantastic dessert any day of the week!

41. Fruit Pizza

Pizza! Create this delectable treat with granola, nut butter, cinnamon, and chopped almonds. Combine together to make a delicious crust. You can add honey if you use unsweetened nut butter. Press into a pie pan or dish, or just press flat on parchment paper. Let chill in the refrigerator or ice chest for at least an hour. Cover in yogurt or softened cream cheese, then sprinkle with your favorite fresh fruits, cacao nibs, or drizzle with chocolate syrup!

Other Staples To Keep On Hand

If you tried to make everything on this list, your entire camper would be full of food and ingredients. Instead, try to group your choices by recipes that use and reuse a smaller number of ingredients. Remember you can always repurpose your leftovers from day 1 lunch for day 2 dinner. Get creative. With this sample shopping list, you’ll be able to create several dishes.

  • Canned or packed meats: tuna, salmon, and chicken
  • Canned beans of several varieties
  • Boiled eggs
  • Lots of fresh fruit and veggies
  • A tub of your favorite “crumbled” cheese – Feta or goat.
  • A jar of nut butter
  • A large bag of mixed nuts and seeds
  • Your favorite multi-purpose bread
  • Mayonnaise and brown mustard
  • Granola or oats
  • Olive oil and lemon juice or a vinaigrette dressing
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder

Closing Thoughts

Just because you don’t want to cook doesn’t mean you can’t eat like a king on your vacation. With a little forethought, some smart shopping, and perhaps a small amount of meal planning before you leave, you can ensure that you have everything you need to whip up fast, easy meals on the go.

10 Creative Memory Jar Ideas for the Ultimate Tribute

From rainbow memory jars to virtual tributes, there are lots of creative ways to honor your loved one.

Kate is an experienced writer who has written hundreds of articles for publication.

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

One of the most touching tributes you can create for your loved one is a memory jar. It's a simple project, and it becomes a lasting way to remember someone you love. There are lots of ways to make your memorial jar unique and special too.

How to Make a DIY Memory Jar

It's super easy to make a memory jar for a celebration of life, funeral, or other event to remember a loved one. Here's how to do it.

  • Get a clear jar in any size you like (bigger jars hold more memories, but smaller ones look more full if you don't plan to put a lot of memories in).
  • Cut small slips of paper or card stock.
  • Have a pen or pencil handy so people can record their memories.
  • Write memories of your loved one on the slips of paper and put them in the jar.

If you're making a memory jar at a service, include a sign for people explaining what you want them to do. This can help everything go smoothly. You can even set out an example so people get inspired.

Creative Ideas for Memory Jars

While the basic process of making a DIY memory jar is really simple, there are lots of ways to personalize your jar or the memories it contains. Whether you're making the jar for a memorial service or doing it to remember a loved one in a different situation, try one of these creative takes on it.

1. Photo Memory Jar

Print up photographs of the loved one and ask people to write memories on the back of the pictures (or write your own). The memories can go with the pictures or just be anything that was special about the person.

2. Memory Jar Guest Book

Instead of a guest book at the funeral of memorial service, use a jar for guests to record their favorite memories of the deceased. They can include their names if they wish. This can be a wonderful gift to the family.

3. Memory Jar With Prompts

Instead of blank slips of paper, use prompts to help people record their memories. Print a prompt on each slip and leave them next to the jar with a pen. Here are some great example memory jar prompts you can use:

  • One of the funniest memories I have about [Name] is....
  • [Name] helped support me when I needed them. One time....
  • I loved it when [Name]....
  • My earliest memory of [Name] is....
  • On the day we met, my first impression of [Name] was....
  • The most important lesson I learned from [Name] was....
  • I will think of [Name] every time I see....

4. Holiday Memory Jar

The first major holiday after your loved one passes away can be incredibly challenging, but a memory jar can help. Decorate the jar with holiday greenery or ribbons and write holiday-related memories on the papers. Next year, you can read through them.

5. First Year Memory Collection

The first year without someone you love can be so hard, but you can use a memory jar to keep them close in your heart. Keep the jar on a shelf in your home and write a memory each time it comes to you. It might be every day or only once in a while. Saving the memories this way can feel like a ritual that helps you cope with your grief.

6. Love Memories in a Jar

Instead of standard slips of paper, cut heart shapes for the memories. Then have people write something they loved about the person on each heart. The jar will be full of these thoughts and memories of love, and it will be a comfort later when you read the slips.

7. Decorated Memory Jar

You don't have to go with a standard clear jar for this tribute. You can customize your own with some great decorations that make it super personal or artistic . Try these ideas:

  • Tie the person's favorite flowers to the jar.
  • Decoupage the jar with photos of the person you're honoring.
  • Stencil or paint the jar with your loved one's name.
  • Use a Mason jar and paint the inside with your loved one's favorite color.
  • Add a ribbon or string and tie on a tag with the person's name.
  • Glue buttons or old jewelry to the jar to give it beautiful artistic flair.

8. Jar of Virtual Memories

If you are holding a memorial service virtually, consider making a virtual memory jar. People can email memories to you, and you can write them down on slips of paper for the jar. Or you can make the entire jar virtual in the form of an online memorial.

9. Pre-Planned Memory Jar by the Person

If someone is terminally ill or getting older, they can create an especially powerful moment for their memorial by making their own memory jar. Include everything really important -- all the best moments in your life. You can also include memories about the people you love. This is a wonderful gift to give to loved ones.

10. Rainbow of Memories in a Jar

Instead of using white slips of paper for the memories, cut pieces of card stock in all the colors of the rainbow. This can be a wonderful and playful variation on the standard jar -- perfect for someone who enjoyed whimsy.

In addition to being part of a memorial service, a memory jar makes a wonderful gift for someone who has lost a loved one. Get memories from everyone who knew the person and give the jar as a gift for a special holiday.

Share Memories With Love

Memorial jars are a great way to come together as a family or community and honor someone who has passed away. No matter how you choose to make the jar, it's the memories that count. As long as you're sharing them with love, you're doing it right.
