Mid-Year Report

Journey’s Original Keyboardist Gregg Rolie to Join Band on Upcoming Tour

The "Freedom Tour 2023" kicks off next month

Journey with Gregg Rolie in 1979

Journey will hit the road next month on a North American tour, and you can expect a familiar face to be among them: according to guitarist Neal Schon, original keyboardist Gregg Rolie will perform with the band for the first time in over four decades.

Rolie helped found Journey back in 1973 and left the band in 1980. This past November, Schon teased the idea of a reunion, tweeting a photo of himself and Rolie with the caption, “2 original founding members. I think my brother Gregg Rolie should join us for 2023 tour. What do you think friends? He will spice it up and we will have a great variety of songs to choose from.” Now, Schon has confirmed that Rollie will appear on the “Freedom Tour 2023” in some capacity, replying to a fan on Facebook that “you’ll be seeing him” at the shows.

It’s unclear whether Rolie will perform a full set with Journey on the upcoming trek or if he’ll act as more of a special guest, particularly because Jonathan Cain, who’s held the keyboardist position in the band since 1980, will be on the tour as well. However, the relationship between Cain and Schon has been less than idyllic in recent months; the artists are in the midst of a legal battle pertaining to the band’s finances, and last month, Schon hit Cain with a cease and desist order after he performed “Don’t Stop Believin” at Mar-A-Lago. So it should be an eventful tour!

Journey’s upcoming tour coincides with Freedom , their first new album in 11 years. Grab tickets to one of their shows here , and see Schon’s statements regarding Rolie’s return below.

‘Don’t Stop Believin”: Journey Marks 50 Years With Summer Stadium Tour

Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain reflect on the band five decades later and discuss the co-billed trek with Def Leppard, which began July 6.

By Gary Graff

Arnel Pineda, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Todd Jensen, Deen Castronovo and Jason Derlatka of Journey

The path to 50 has not always been easy for Journey, whose members have been celebrating the milestone on the road, including a summer stadium tour with Def Leppard.

Over the decades, there has been rancor amid the music, lineup changes and lawsuits, periods of uncertainty and open-ended hiatus.

And yet the wheel — in the sky and elsewhere — keeps on turning for the group whose first show, at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, ushered in 1974.

Trending on Billboard

The band has notched 18 top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 , and one would be hard pressed to attend a sporting event where the 1981 hit “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” (also famously played in the finale episode of The Sopranos ) isn’t piped over the PA.

Given those accomplishments, Journey’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 was long overdue.

Meanwhile, since the end of the pandemic, the act’s current lineup — including co-founding guitarist Neal Schon, longtime keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain and, since 2007, Filipino frontman Arnel Pineda (whom Schon discovered on YouTube) — has been headlining arenas. And its summer stadium tour, which began July 6 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, reprises its 2018 bill with Def Leppard.

“They’ve sold out every ticket everywhere we go — it’s kind of crazy, and well-deserved,” says Jeff Frasco, Journey’s agent at Creative Artists Agency. “The songs are amazing; people want to hear them. Combine that with putting on a great show, and it’s great. They give people their money’s worth.”

Def Leppard

Def Leppard on the ‘Melodic Mayhem’ of ‘Pyromania’ & Why Taylor Swift Is ‘Bigger Than the Beatles…

All of that has somewhat mitigated the rancor of the past decade, which has included legal skirmishes that led to management changes and the departure of original bassist Ross Valory and longtime drummer Steve Smith, as well as trademark disputes with Steve Perry, singer of the band’s biggest hits. Schon and Cain have gone at each other, too, in well-reported conflicts over business issues that spilled into social media, most recently in 2023.

The good news, according to drummer Deen Castronovo — who played with Schon and Cain in the late-1980s group Bad English — is that “everybody has mended fences,” he says. “They’ve made amends and we’re all on one jet again, and it’s all for one and one for all.”

Clearly, “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” seems to be not just a song title, but an ethos for the band.

Fifty years is a big milestone for any act. What has kept Journey around and active — and successful — for this long?

Neal Schon: Well, it all started with the songs themselves, and I think we got some things right a long time ago and continue to bring it live. We made our statements and continued to move forward in writing new music.

Jonathan Cain: It’s something you respect and you’re grateful for; that’s how I feel about it. For me, it’s 44 years, and I’ve always felt like it was the highest honor to join such a prestigious band and then to be able to contribute and take it to another level.

Schon: Our fans are so loyal to us, and we have young fans now whose parents were fans of ours and now they have their own kids who are coming to the concerts, too, and they love the music. Bands usually disband because they stop growing, but we keep growing and getting new fans. That keeps it alive.

Take us back to Journey day one.

Schon: I had just come out of Santana and almost formed a band with Greg Errico and Larry Graham from Sly & The Family Stone. Then Herbie Herbert approached me; he was my guitar tech [in Santana] and he said, “Look, I’m starting a management firm. I want to manage you and wrap a band around you.” I was definitely looking for something to do. Herbie and I had always gotten along and he believed in me, and it just went from there.

Journey has been through a lot of changes — 18 members, give or take — and some major shifts, like when Steve Perry joined in 1977, or Cain in 1980, or Arnel Pineda in 2007. How has the group been able to navigate those changes and remain a draw?

Schon: I think the creativity. Any new person in a band brings out a different side in the chemistry in a band. We definitely had that chemistry between the three of us — me, Jonathan and Perry — in the old band, and we’ve shown signs as well in the [current] band.

Cain: The music’s bigger than [the band members]. Journey has always connected with the audience. It really comes down to the integrity of the songs and the message. It was positive music — which [critics] loved to hate. ( Laughs .) A song like “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” has a huge connection because there are a lot of small-town girls and city boys wanting to get on the midnight train to anywhere. We worked hard to write songs [for the fans] about their lives.

It’s no secret there has been a lot of drama, especially over the past few years. You two seemed to be at each other’s throats and yet managed to pull it back from the brink. How?

Cain: Just looking at the big picture: The music is louder than the noise of the grumbling and the arguments and the disagreements and stuff. The show must go on, right? It’s just the drive of knowing that there are fans out there that don’t care about our differences but care that we show up and play for them. They care that we carry on, so we’ve got to put aside our differences for them.

Schon: The one thing I can tell you is Journey is everything to me. Journey comes first, and I’m going to do anything I need to do to prevail and make sure that ship does not go down. You have to forgive and you have to move forward. We’ve chosen to do that.

The band is managing itself these days, right?

Schon: Yes. It’s like myself, my wife, Jonathan and his wife. It comes down to how much you understand what your situation is about. I would tell a young player, “Get involved in [the business]. Know what’s going down with the contracts, understand it, trademark yourself. If something shady comes by, know what question to ask.” It took a long time to learn all that, but I’m happy we have.

If you could only have one album to hand to someone as a representation of Journey — and not Greatest Hits — what would you choose?

Schon: Infinity [released in 1978]. To this day, that’s one of my favorite records. There are many bigger records, although that was no slouch of a record, and musically it’s very, very creative. We did an amazing job of turning that corner, of keeping some of the past and moving forward into the future with Steve on board and everything. It was like a new era for us.

Cain: I’d have to say Escape . That’s our biggest record, and there was no accident it was. It still sounds fresh and it connects with people. I think the chemistry between all of us at the time, we were just a good, good band. We were on fire, young dudes with a mission.

Players, Journey

You put out Freedom in 2022, which was your first new studio album in 11 years. Will there be another?

Cain: A single here, a single there. I’ve just written a new song; hopefully we can get it out there. Albums don’t really matter much anymore. You have to accept reality and adapt to it. Fortunately, I’ve got a lot of albums under my belt. I’m just happy the catalog is continuing to cook along.

Schon: I continue to be creative; we all do. We recorded [ Freedom and] we recorded way more than what ended up on the album, a lot of great stuff that wasn’t used, so there is some stuff like that. But the business now is really about live performances and about whatever you can do with merchandise.

Speaking of live, you’re out this summer again with Def Leppard, like the two bands did in 2018. What are you anticipating?

Cain: It’ll be fun. It’s a rock’n’roll show, and there’s nothing better than playing in a big, open space and a place where you don’t have to worry about the echo coming back at you. It’ll be nice just letting it blow; a full-on rock experience.

Schon: We love those guys. We’ve always had an amazing time with them. We’ve had great chemistry together going way back to the first tour we did with them, when [lead singer] Steve Augeri was in the band.

Are there any archival projects in the pipeline related to the 50th anniversary or otherwise?

Schon: There’s lots of stuff I don’t think has ever been heard, live, from the early band. But I don’t think there’s anything from the older band, the ’80s band, that hasn’t been put out.

Cain: There was an album that came out in Japan, The Ballads , that I think would be a huge seller back here. You could even have [Volumes] 1 and 2; there are enough songs.

Has a stage musical or biopic about Journey ever been considered?

Cain: We’ve been down that road. I worked with Anthony Zuiker [creator of TV’s CSI franchise]; he’s a huge Journey fan and he had these songs in mind to create a play. And Perry shot it down. He didn’t want to know about it. Then [Zuiker] came back to me again; he had this Journey-Cirque du Soleil idea, and we were supposed to get something else with Netflix, the same producers who did the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary. Right now, I think that’s in the hands of Steve Perry to say yea or nay. You can’t use his songs without his permission, obviously.

So that’s another gorilla in the room. Arnel has been with the band 17 years now. Steve wouldn’t even sing with you at the Rock Hall induction. People are always asking about it, but is it time to stop and realize he’s never coming back?

Schon: I love Steve’s voice. I just wish he continued singing. If Steve wanted to be heard, he’d be heard. He came with his last solo record [2018’s Traces ], and it showed hope that he was going to get out there and start doing things again. Without seeing him do it, I can’t answer something like that.

Cain: I just wish the guy well. Arnel is the longest tenured of any lead singer that we’ve ever had and he has crushed it for all those years, so you got to go, “How lucky are we to have a gentleman like that?” And [Perry] is always going to be judged on his contributions [to Journey] and the legacy he left behind. He wins more than he loses.

Watch: JOURNEY Co-Founder GREGG ROLIE Joins Band On Stage In Austin During 50th-Anniversary Tour

JOURNEY co-founder Gregg Rolie rejoined the band on stage last night (Wednesday, February 22) in Austin, Texas.

Rolie came up during JOURNEY 's encore at Moody Center ATX to play several cuts from his time with the band: "Just the Same Way" from 1979's "Evolution" album, "Of A Lifetime" from 1975's "Journey" and "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime" from 1978's "Infinity" . Rolie , who was also the original lead singer of SANTANA , and JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon , who also played with SANTANA during the latter band's early days, then covered SANTANA 's "Black Magic Woman" with help from guitarist Steve Lukather of TOTO , which is the support act on JOURNEY 's 50th-anniversary tour. The JOURNEY performance ended with a rendition of "Any Way You Want It" .

During his time on stage, Rolie told the crowd: "I just wanna say: Fifty years? Fifty years of one band going through changes, but it's like a runaway freight train that just keeps going with no brakes."

Rolie was JOURNEY 's first singer, though his role quickly diminished when Steve Perry arrived in 1977. Gregg left JOURNEY in 1980, just before the band achieved its commercial heights.

Back in 2019, Rolie told Rolling Stone magazine that he left JOURNEY "because I didn't like my life anymore. I've said this a million times and I know there's people that say, 'That's not the reason.' But I left because I was unhappy with what I was doing in my own life. I loved the management. I loved the music. I loved what we built. I just wasn't happy, so I had to blow the horn on it and just stop it.”"

He continued: "Everyone thinks it was because Perry came in and started singing all the leads. My God! Again, I was spread so thin with all these keyboards parts and singing leads, he was a welcome sight to me. And he could sing like a bird! It wasn't too hard to figure out. I was never against it."

Rolie went on to say that he was drinking too much and that he wanted to start a family. He also said that he was happy about the fact that JOURNEY became a household name after he moved on. "I felt very proud that I helped to build something that went to that extreme," he said. "I've always felt that way. Yeah, without me doing this, that might never have happened. But it's not about me. It's about all of it. It's a misconception in this business of, ‘Who does what?' We all did something."

JOURNEY 's tour with TOTO officially kicked off on February 4 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Presented by AEG Presents , the "Freedom Tour 2023" is making stops in Austin, Montreal and Memphis before wrapping April 25 at the brand-new Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California.

The 2023 run includes rescheduled dates in Washington, D.C., plus Hartford, Toronto and Quebec, which were postponed last year due to the coronavirus.

Gregg Rolie Sings Five Songs With Journey During Surprise Encore Appearance in Texas

There has been a lot of fuss about which classic members may or may not join Journey on their current 50th anniversary tour and yesterday (Feb. 22), original singer and keyboardist Gregg Rolie made a surprise appearance, playing five songs with the group near the end of the night.

Prior to the tour's kickoff, there was speculation that Rolie (keyboard, originally lead vocals) could possibly return to the lineup after having departed more than 40 years ago in 1980. It was also rumored that singer Steve Perry, who took over as Journey's singer in 1977 (through 1987 and again from 1995 through 1998) after Rolie sang on the group's first three records, was in the mix for a return as well.

In mid-January, Michaele Schon, guitarist Neal Schon's wife, revealed that two members of the band were on "adamant no" on Rolie rejoining the band, also hinting at a future appearance, stating the two "will be somewhere together at least one time this year in honor of what they began in 1972."

As the tour swung by the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, it was the ideal time to welcome Rolie back to the stage, at least temporarily.

On Twitter , Rollie shared a video clip from the set and wrote, "When the band you helped start 50 years ago is playing down the street you've got one option... JOIN THEM on stage!"

Before bringing Rolie onstage, Schon addressed the crowd, informing fans (quote via UCR ), "We have an extra special set tonight. So when we go offstage at the end of the show, don't leave."

Singing on five songs, sharing the duties with drummer Deen Castronovo on two of them, Rolie also sat behind a Hammond organ during performances of "Just the Same Way," "Of a Lifetime" (played for the first time since 2005), "Feeling That Way," "Anytime" and a cover of Santana's "Black Magic Woman" (originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac) that also saw Toto guitarist Steve Lukather guest onstage.

See the complete setlist and fan-filmed video footage of Rolie's surprise appearance further down the page.

For Journey fans, Rolie's appearance is a nice moment to cherish amid a rocky year — one that has even seen current frontman Arnel Pineda express his frustration over all the drama. "[I'm] with the band to sing the legacy... if some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime," he shared earlier this month.

Journey's tour runs through April 25 — see the remaining dates here and head to this location to get tickets.

JOURNEY is continuing to promote its latest album, “Freedom” , which was released in July via BMG . The LP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Current Rock chart.

The members of JOURNEY celebrated the album’s release by kicking off a residency featuring special symphony orchestra performances at the new, state-of-the-art Resorts World Casino in Las Vegas.

As JOURNEY ‘s legend continues to grow larger and their touring gets bigger, “Freedom” is the band’s first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011’s “Eclipse” , and in addition to Schon , along with longtime keyboard player and primary lyricist Cain and Pineda , one more member was recruited for the LP — bassist extraordinaire Randy Jackson , who had played on JOURNEY ‘s 1986 album “Raised On Radio” .

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, JOURNEY has 25 gold and platinum albums, with total sales adding up to over 100 million albums worldwide, earning the band two Diamond Awards with a third on the way for the “Frontiers” album. JOURNEY has also surpassed one billion streams on Spotify .

About Journey

Since the group’s formation in 1973, Journey has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their  Greatest Hits  album is certified 15 times-platinum, making Journey one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song  Don’t Stop Believin’  has been streamed over one billion times alone.

Journey was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, and 2018’s co-headlining tour with Def Leppard was the band’s most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than one million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious  Billboard  Legends   of   Live touring award. March 2019 saw the release of  Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan ,  a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band’s first-ever performances of the albums  Escape  and  Frontiers  in their entirety. Journey has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary  Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey  about the band’s resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after Journey founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of Toto are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire now exceed three billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings,  Africa  accounts for over one billion streams on Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA eight-times platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of Toto. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5,000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45-plus years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s  Thriller , and accolades to their names, Toto remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Journey Ignores Drama at 2023 Tour Opener

Journey played the first concert of their 50th anniversary tour on Jan. 27 in Durant, Okla. despite the  ongoing litigation  between principal members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain .

The discourse stems from an American Express card meant for the band’s enterprises, with Schon and Cain each claiming the other has misused the card for their own personal expenses. Since the initial lawsuit was filed this past November by Schon, many have wondered how the band would go on the road before the preliminary hearing for the guitarist's suit on March 3.

The group answered those queries on Friday evening at the Choctaw Casino & Resort by playing a two hour set which largely focused on their greatest hits. In spite of the ongoing internal strife, there were no signs of any discord on stage. In fact, the group was impressively in good form after being on a touring break since early October. Singer Arnel Pineda , who has wrestled in the recent past with vocal issues, was particularly on point through the night. You can see a set list from the concert below.

The Grand Theater at the casino, with a capacity of just 3,000 provided an intimate setting for the tour launch. With their mega-hit, "Don't Stop Believin'" making an appearance only three songs into the set, Schon paused at its conclusion to acknowledge the group's important milestone. "Welcome to our 50th anniversary," he told the sold-out crowd. "We're the fortunate ones to still be alive here."

Nearly an hour later, Cain shared his own greetings. "We are so happy to be back," he said. "It's good to be back, all together again."

But in the months leading up to the 50th anniversary run, the headlines have been far from celebratory, instead dominated by mounting developments in the ongoing schism between Schon and Cain. The pair have been at odds in the past, largely centered around political differences. In a 2022 interview , Schon admitted that he kept his discussions with Cain purely musical, in an effort to maintain their creative bond.

Despite that goal, the guitarist's harmony with Cain came to an end that same year. Schon  filed a November lawsuit alleging that his access to financial documents related to Journey's credit card had been "improperly restricted." He indicated that the issue had been building for " over a year ."

In response, Cain accused Schon of running up " enormous personal charges " on the group's credit card. Tension continued to build, with Schon labeling his bandmate as a " hypocrite ." Cain separately charged that the guitarist has caused severe " damage " to the Journey brand.

Additional drama developed as Schon unsuccessfully sought to bring former member  Gregg Rolie back into the fold for the current anniversary run, later intimating that he'd encountered resistance in regards to that idea. Two weeks ago (Jan. 13), Cain filed his own lawsuit against Schon, alleging that the musician ran up more than a million dollars in personal expenses on the Journey credit card.

Journey will play a second show Jan. 28 in Durant. The 50th anniversary tour will then resume at the end of next week, in Allentown, Pa. on Feb. 4. The dates, which currently run through the end of April, once again feature Toto sharing the bill. The pair previously  toured together in 2022 as part of a trek that was initially also supposed to include  Billy Idol .

"It’s not about erasing the past": Linkin Park on controversy over new singer, Emily Armstrong

Linkin Park says the band has entered a new era. However, it isn't without controversy.

Earlier this week, the dormant rock band kicked off its "From Zero" tour in Los Angeles to share songs from their first album in seven years — due out on November 15 — but the discourse around their new singer, Emily Armstrong, is casting a dark cloud over the tour.

During the show in LA., founding member Mike Shinoda honored the passing of former lead singer Chester Bennington , who died by suicide in 2017 , while defending the band's decision to replace him with Armstrong — who was recently called out by Bennington’s son, Jaime, for her ties to the Church of Scientology and her support of Danny Masterson , who was convicted of raping two women and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in 2023.

"It's not about erasing the past," Shinoda said to the crowd. "It's about starting this new chapter into the future and coming out here for each and every one of you."

“It’s not about erasing the past. It’s about starting this new chapter into the future.” -Mike Shinoda @LINKINPARK • #FromZero World Tour pic.twitter.com/ouwQo53D3M — The Kia Forum (@thekiaforum) September 12, 2024

But although USA Today reported that Armstrong — co-founder of alternative rock band Dead Sara — "made an instant impact with her raging vocals [and] fearless stage presence," some people are still very upset about her addition to the lineup — especially Jaime.

Variety reported that earlier this week Jaime shared a series of now-deleted Instagram stories in which he wrote that Shinoda had “quietly erased" his father’s life and legacy in real time, during international suicide prevention month.

Jaime continued to call out Shinoda and the band for its attempt to "reinvent itself" by replacing his father with Armstrong, "knowing Emily's history in the church and her history as an ally to Danny Masterson is what it is." He highlighted that the band "have refused to acknowledge the impact of hiring someone like Emily without so much as a clarifying statement on the variety of victims that make up [the] core fan base."

He added that the band “failed to address the concerns of their diverse fan base" and that they "betrayed the trust” of the fanbase who “trusted [them] to be the bigger better person. To be the change. Because you promised us that was your intention.” He concluded, “Now you’re just senile and tone-deaf.”

The allegations surrounding Armstrong were brought to light shortly after the band's reunion announcement. Fans online circulated an Instagram comment that former Scientologist and Mars Volta musician Cedric Bixler-Zavala sent to Armstrong, alleging that she has ties to the controversial group. Bixler-Zavala also alleged that Armstrong and others tried to silence his wife Chrissie Carnell Bixler after she came forward, claiming Masterson sexually assaulted her. Carnell Bixler testified against Masterson in 2022 and separately filed a lawsuit against him, NME  reported .

Following the immediate backlash regarding Armstrong's alleged past, she issued a statement on  Instagram  about her ties to Masterson, writing, “I’m new to so many of you, and I wanted to clear the air about something that happened a while back. Several years ago, I was asked to support someone I considered a friend at a court appearance, and went to one early hearing as an observer. Soon after, I realized I shouldn’t have. I always try to see the good in people, and I misjudged him. I have never spoken with him since. To say it as clearly as possible: I do not condone abuse or violence against women, and I empathize with the victims of these crimes,” she concluded.

The bestselling group announced in a  news release  on Sept. 5 that Emily Armstrong of the band Dead Sara has joined Linkin Park to be a co-vocalist with band veteran Mike Shinoda.

They also announced an upcoming tour and released their first single since 2017, a song called "The Emptiness Machine" that features vocals by Armstrong.

The single is part of their forthcoming album titled "From Zero," which will be released Nov. 15. It comes on the heels of their spring release of "Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023)” featuring the band's greatest hits.

Drummer Colin Brittain is also joining the band, which includes original members Shinoda, Joe Hahn, Phoenix and Brad Delson. Brittain has been a songwriter and producer for  G Flip , Illenium and One OK Rock.

“The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created," Shinoda said in the news release. "We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

Armstrong made her debut onstage in a one-hour  global livestream  of a concert in Los Angeles on Sept. 5 featuring the new version of Linkin Park. They performed "The Emptiness Machine" as well as their hits "Somewhere I Belong," "Numb," "Faint," "Bleed It Out," "One Step Closer, "What I've Done" and "In the End."

"Ladies and gentlemen, that is Emily Armstrong, make some noise," Shinoda said to introduce Armstrong onstage after performing their new single.

“When I started to hear Emily’s voice on things, it was like the first time that my brain would accept it as a Linkin Park song,” Shinoda told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in  a band interview posted Sept. 6 . “And then all of a sudden we’re here and it’s very real, and it’s really big.”

Armstrong also spoke in the interview with Lowe about stepping in for Bennington.

"Obviously on the side of like the feelings and the emotions of it, I would love to do him proud," she said.

She opened up about singing Linkin Park hits that featured Bennington.

"It's never a thought where it's like I need to make this song my own," she said. "It's like, 'How do I make this song have the same impact, as much as possible, with my voice?'"

"There was a huge leap of faith that we had to say, 'I think she's the one,'" Shinoda said in the interview.

The remaining members of the group had been meeting up in recent years "without expectations" of trying to "restart the band," but while collaborating with other artists, they "found a special kinship with Armstrong and Brittain," according to the news release.

Ahead of playing the band's hit "Crawling" at the Los Angeles concert, Shinoda referenced Bennington. The singer  died by suicide at 41 in 2017  shortly after the group released its album "One More Light."

"And in the role of Chester Bennington this afternoon is each of you," he told the crowd. "Are you ready to sing with us?"

Linkin Park 'From Zero World Tour' dates

The group has scheduled six upcoming shows on its "From Zero World Tour," starting on Sept. 11 at Kia Forum in Los Angeles and also hitting venues in New York City, Germany, London, South Korea and Colombia.

Presale tickets for the tour are available for the band's LP Underground fan club Sept. 6 and then for the general public on Sept. 7.
