Astral Travel For Beginners - What To Expect And 5 Tips

What To Expect

Relax and enjoy yourself As you enter into the world of astral travel for beginners, you might look forward to becoming an expert, able to project yourself to any chosen destination at any time. For the time being though, accept that you are a beginner and ensure that you have all that you need in terms of peace and quiet when you try this for the first time. The best times of the day to try astral projection for beginners are either just after you wake up in the morning or just before falling asleep at night. The best place will most probably be your bedroom; it’s usually where you are most relaxed.

What does Astral Travel for beginners feel like? Different people will experience different sensations when trying astral projection. You may see things, moving shapes or lights for example, even though your eyes are shut. You should certainly feel relaxed, and if you feel comfortable enough then you are on the way to being released from your physical body. Sometimes though, if you try too hard to relax, it has the opposite effect, so don’t approach it like a job.

What to wear or not Astral travel for beginners requires that you prepare yourself thoroughly, and dress appropriately in loose-fitting and comfortable clothes. Alternatively it is perfectly acceptable to wear nothing at all. You should be aware however that when you astral travel, the temperature of your body drops slightly just as your physical body falls to sleep . So get yourself a sheet or even a thin blanket just to drape over yourself and make up for the temperature drop.

The beginners guide to floating When you manage to achieve astral projection, your consciousness & astral body leave the physical body together. You have your senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste as you float through the astral plane. This is not dangerous, physically your body is not floating at all and while you are traveling, nothing can enter your physical body except for your astral body. Should you feel fear or sense danger as you travel, your astral body returns immediately.

Relax but don’t sleep Relaxation techniques are an important part of the process of astral travel. As a beginner, you may well find it helpful to follow written instructions until the routine becomes ingrained in you. Also, getting comfortable, as you begin to breathe in and out slowly, you need to be careful not to fall asleep. You will have your eyes closed, and as you relax it is natural that your body might want to go to sleep. As you begin your travels, you will start using your astral senses. When you try to open your eyes in your astral body, as a beginner you might find this causes a reflex action of opening your eyes in your physical body.

Astral Travel For Beginners - What To Expect And 5 Tips

The road to mental and spiritual health

Astral projection for beginners promises amazing experiences and adventures. Take your time, keep your mind open and you will get there, reaping the benefits of mental strength and spiritual calm .

5 Astral Travel Tips

Astral traveling for beginners is not too different from that of the people that are more experienced; the main difference being is in how you get to and how you handle the new experience. There are many things that you need to do and understand before you can successfully get to enjoy your own travel into the fifth dimension.

When you are preparing, here are 5 tips that could help you find your path sooner than others:

1. Understand the process – most people who want to experience astral projection are just plain curious and nothing else. They have no idea of what this really is and what it involves. It is always good to find some material that tells you about astral travel for beginners so you completely and thoroughly understand what this is, how this is done and what are its benefits/drawbacks. People who plunge into this for “adventure” are likely to either fail terribly or get into trouble.

2. Find an appropriate guide – as with every new skill or activity, you would need a teacher. The biggest fallacy and one that is difficult to explain is that people think that just by reading something about astral projection for beginners qualifies them to try it and be successful at it. You need to understand that this is an acquired skill which requires many hours of serious training of both body and mind and you need to show plenty of patience and perseverance before you see any real results. Find yourself a reputed and experienced guide who will be able to help you hands on and explain to you all the things that you can see and experience during your astral travel.

3. Use appropriate aids – the best thing you will find when looking for astral travel for beginners is that they have audio aids for them. While veterans learnt to control their minds and enjoy OBE (out of body experience) at will, beginners would do good if they use some good aids such as specially recorded audios meant to fast-forward this process. These types of sounds usually promote the shifting of brain frequencies for the ones that are most conducive for astral projection.

EHERHER

4. Stop looking for “it” – a most common mistake found in astral projection for beginners is that people keep looking for “it” to happen. If you find yourself at every step asking whether “this is it?” you will never get to experience it. Why? Because when you start thinking in this manner you will think about your physical body and when you do, the separation becomes impossible. You will need to stop waiting for it to happen – and just go ahead and experience the astral travel with no questions asked.

5. Invoke the help of an astral guide – veterans say that everyone can have an astral guide if they look and ask for it. Ask for the help of your astral guide and let it help you through your journey into the fifth dimension. Many guides on astral travel for beginners will explain in detail how to seek out this astral mentor and how to make the best use of its presence.

How to Perform Astral Projection

Last Updated: July 22, 2024 Fact Checked

Astral projection refers to an out-of-body experience (OBE) during which the astral body leaves the physical body and travels to the astral plane. People often experience this state during illness or when involved in a near-death experience, but it is also possible to practice astral projection at will. This article contains instructions on how to get started.

Step 2 Start in the morning.

  • It's easier to perform astral projection alone than it is with someone else in the room. If you usually sleep with a partner, choose a room other than the bedroom to practice astral projection. A good time to do it is when no one else is in and make sure no one is going to walk into the room when you're in astral flight.
  • Draw the shades or curtains and rid the room of distracting noises. Any type of interruption could disrupt the state of relaxation you need to achieve.

Step 4 Lie down and relax.

  • Flex your muscles and then loosen them. Start with your toes and work your way up your body, gradually making your way to your head. Make sure every muscle is completely relaxed when you are through.
  • Breathe deeply and exhale completely. Don't hold tension in your chest and shoulders, just relax.
  • Focus your mind on your breathing. Don't get carried away with thoughts of outside worries, and don't get preoccupied yet with the idea of your soul projecting from your body. Just let yourself sink into relaxation.
  • It can be helpful to use a quartz crystal to raise and speed up your vibrations as preparation. Gently hold the crystal on your third eye slightly above the center of your eyebrows with closed eyes and breathe deeply. Feel the vibrations and your head clearing; you can envision golden, white, purple, or any colour light if you like. During the meditation and astral travelling, you can hold the crystal in your hand or place it on your chest or abdomen. The crystal will empower and protect you because of its high vibrations; negative energies have lower vibrations. [3] X Research source

Moving the Soul From the Body

Step 1 Reach a hypnotic state.

  • Broaden your focus on the rest of your body. Move your legs, your arms, and your head using only your mind. Keep your focus steady until you're able to move your whole body in your mind alone. [6] X Research source

Step 2 Enter into a state of vibration.

  • Your OBE is successful if you feel as though you are gazing upon your body from across the room, and that your conscious self is now separate from your body.
  • It takes a lot of practice to get to this point for some people, though for others it comes as naturally as breathing. Either way, it is possible for everyone if it is desired and practiced enough! If you have trouble completely lifting your soul from your body, try lifting just a hand or a leg at first. Keep practicing until you're able to move across the room. [8] X Research source

Step 4 Return to your body.

Exploring the Astral Plane

Step 1 Confirm that you are projecting your soul from your body.

  • Next time you practice the astral projection, don't turn around to look at your body. Instead, leave the room and walk into another room in the house.

Step 1 Confirm that you are projecting your soul from your body.

  • Return to your body. Physically go into the room you previously projected yourself into. Walk to the article you examined during the astral travel. Can you confirm the details you noted when you explored the object with your mind?

Step 2 Explore further.

  • There is so much to get into, but know that no harm will come to you unless you think it will. The thrill of having an OBE keeps some people out of their bodies for long periods, which is said to weaken the silver cord but the silver cord cannot be weakened. It is pure energy and energy can't be eliminated or removed, only moved from one place to another, or one form or another so don't worry about astral travelling; it is natural, powerful, and healing.
  • The silver cord can never be broken, but it is said that your soul can be delayed from re-entering your body if you spend too much energy outside of it. Yet your soul and body are so intrinsically entwined that the soul will naturally come back when it's right to.
  • Some say that demons can inhabit the body while the soul is being projected. If you fear this may happen, protect your body by blessing the room with a prayer before you perform the projection. It is only hearsay anyway and seeing as you'll have already asked for light protection nothing bad will occur.
  • Your soul can also interact with other astral projections. Try it with a friend who has practiced as much as you have. Some say astral sex is mind-blowing. However, remember to always return to your body.
  • It is possible to heal others during astral travel; this is a form of distance healing that is very powerful. Envision the sick person, perhaps lying in their bed. It doesn't matter if they're not physically in their bed while you're doing it because time and distance become void when you're in the astral plane. Always ask for protection, healing power, and guidance from whomever you pray to and envision light; you can ask during astral projection as and when you wish. See light in your hands as white and strong as you can, and if you feel ready put one hand on their forehead and another on their abdomen and pour the light into them. Your intentions must be pure and you should be feeling nothing but love for them. Sometimes people will report back to you that something amazing has happened to them, even though you didn't tell them you were the source of it! Enjoy your astral journeys!

What exactly is astral projection here's what to know about the phenomena.

Sarah Regan

You've probably heard of lucid dreaming, and maybe even out-of-body experiences, but how about astral projection? The rare phenomena (which we can't actually confirm with science, btw) has been anecdotally recorded throughout history—with lore of how to do it and more recent accounts remaining today. Here's what to know.

What is astral projection?

Astral projection is an intentional out-of body experience (OBE) in which the "subtle" or "spirit" body travels outside the physical body at the whim of the individual. An out-of-body experience itself occurs when a person temporarily feels like their spirit or soul has left their physical body, often the unintentional result of an accident or near-death experience.

Through astral projection, it's said that someone essentially wills an OBE to happen, with common anecdotal experiences including feeling a vibration as your soul leaves your body, seeing your body lay in bed, and even traveling around your home, neighborhood, and beyond. (Some people even say astral sex is possible with another person astral projecting at the same time.)

Your soul never completely disconnects from your body, believed to be always connected by a "silver chord." And speaking of, accounts of an astral plane, astral projection, and this silver chord can be seen throughout numerous traditions, from Hinduism to Buddhism, Christianity to Kabbalistic teachings, and more.

According to  Graham Nicholls , an OBE researcher and author of  Navigating the Out-of-Body Experience , one theory is that an OBE is "a construct or schema that is based upon  sensory information not coming from the ordinary senses 1  (extrasensory perception, if you will)." When this happens, he explains, the self or one's consciousness seems to be able to function and perceive independently of the physical body.

While OBEs have most definitely been researched and proven to be a real phenomenon 2 , astral projection hasn't gotten that far, at least in the scientific community.

What the research says so far.

There are tons of online forums where everyday people describe their experiences entering the astral plane at will . But, for obvious reasons, very little scientific research has been conducted to see whether it's actually possible to mentally detach from the physical body. Matters of the soul are incredibly hard to study in a laboratory setting.

There is, however, one 2014 case study out of the University of Ottawa's School of Psychology, in which a woman who said she could astral project was put under a fMRI machine. The patient was physically stationary for an hour but guided in and out of astral projections in which she was prompted to move her nonphysical body in different ways. Researchers monitored the activity in different regions of her brain throughout the exercise and found that they did show activity that correlated with motion 1 during the times she claimed to be astral projecting.

"The existence of such a case and its presentation raises the possibility that this phenomenon may have a significant incidence," the study reads. "This would be reminiscent of the discovery and eventual study of synesthesia."

Eben Alexander, M.D. , a neurosurgeon, has also been the subject of research on out-of-body experiences and astral projection. In 2008, an inexplicable brain infection left Alexander in a weeklong coma. When he awoke, he claims to have had profound memories of a journey deep into another realm. Since then, he's dedicated his life to exploring the mysteries of human consciousness.

Though his near-death experience was not voluntary, it did cause Alexander to think astral projection was possible. He tells mbg he now uses binaural beats-based audio recordings to travel beyond the five senses and explore nonphysical aspects of consciousness.

The problem when it comes to declaring astral projection "real" or "fake" is that much of the information about it is anecdotal. Pinning down human consciousness within the realm of modern science has proved a very difficult (and potentially impossible) task.

Why it's difficult to prove.

When it comes to Western science and medicine, the burden of proof is heavy. Psychiatrist Roxanna Namavar, D.O. , who completed her residency at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies (where Alexander's own near-death experience was actually studied), explains, "Fundamentally the scientific community in this country is very Westernized, very much based in 'What does the evidence say?'— and that can sometimes pull away our curiosity for things greater than ourselves."

Plus, she adds, there is no real way to definitively measure astral projections or compare them to a control group. Not to mention, studying these things requires someone with funding to have interest. And to that end, most people don't know how to astral project, so rounding up a solid sample size for research would be difficult.

These are some reasons why, she says, "There tends to be this split between science and spirituality," adding, "I don't think you can prove or disprove astral projection or out-of-body experiences."

How to try it yourself:

According to Nicholls, it would be best to learn to astral project with the help of a professional. There are also resources online, such as videos and guided meditations for astral projection that you can try.

More generally, though, Nicholls says you can help induce OBEs through techniques that break down your sense of self. For example, he suggests  visualization methods ,  breathing techniques , and even physical exhaustion, to get to the state of deep relaxation necessary to astral project. Once there, you can follow this sequence:

  • As you're laying in bed, start to work with the sensation of your  soul separating  from your body. You want to be completely relaxed, in a quiet, dark room. (Some say it's easier to astral project when you've woken up in the morning, as opposed to when you're going to bed, because you're more relaxed.)
  • From this dreamy state , with your eyes closed, start to visualize your body in your mind's eye, imagining you were moving different body parts, without actually moving them physically. You may start to feel vibration, which is fine.
  • From there, you make the move "out-of-body." This can take some trial and error, but once you feel it, look back at your body laying in bed. Explore around the room if you can, and return to your body. Once you've done this successfully, you can start traveling around your home, and even outside.
  • Always be sure return to the body when you're done exploring. Additionally, for extra protection, crystal expert Ashley Leavy previously recommended both obsidian and malachite for protection and aid in astral travel, so try holding one (or both) or putting them on your chest while you make the voyage.

The takeaway.

Research may never be able to confirm the existence of the astral plane , let alone astral travel, but countless people throughout history (and still today) swear it's happened to them. The only way to truly for sure is to give it a try yourself—happy traveling.

How to Astro Travel: A Beginner’s Guide to Astral Projection Techniques and Tips

To astro travel, lie down comfortably and close your eyes. Relax your body and enter a trance state. Use visualization techniques to set a clear intention, such as flying. Gradually relax each body part from your feet to your head. This helps you achieve body awareness and prepares you for the astral projection experience.

Next, use deep breathing techniques to achieve a relaxed state. Focus on each breath to center your mind and body. Visualization is also an essential tool. Picture yourself lifting away from your physical form. Maintain a calm and open mindset throughout this process. Many find it helpful to set a clear intention before starting. This could include exploring specific places or gaining insights.

Tips for success include maintaining a journal. Documenting experiences helps improve your technique. Regular practice is crucial, as astral travel can take time to master.

As you progress, you may want to explore advanced techniques, such as using guided meditations or binaural beats. These methods can enhance your journey. In the following section, we will delve deeper into specific techniques and detailed steps for successful astral projection.

Table of Contents

What Is Astro Travel and How Does It Work?

Astro travel, also known as astral projection, is an intentional out-of-body experience where an individual’s consciousness separates from their physical body. This phenomenon allows the person to explore different dimensions or realms of existence.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health defines astral projection as “a type of altered state of consciousness where a person perceives themselves as separating from their physical self.” This definition emphasizes the experience’s subjective nature and its ties to altered mental states.

Astro travel involves techniques such as meditation, lucid dreaming, and visualization. Practitioners often report enhanced awareness during these experiences. The individual may perceive themselves floating above their physical body or traveling to different locations or dimensions.

Additional research from the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies notes that astral projection can be linked to various cultural beliefs and practices, where it is often viewed as a spiritual journey or a method for personal growth.

Influencing factors for astro travel include emotional state, mental focus, and physical relaxation. Specific practices may enhance an individual’s likelihood of achieving astral projection.

A survey published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies indicates that approximately 20% of adults have experienced some form of out-of-body experience. This statistic highlights the phenomenon’s potential prevalence.

Astro travel can foster personal insight, spiritual development, and a greater understanding of consciousness. However, many individuals also report challenges in achieving desired outcomes.

The broader impacts include psychological effects, increased interest in metaphysical studies, and potential benefits for mental health. Various cultures regard astral projection as a pathway to enlightenment.

Specific examples include the use of astral projection for therapeutic purposes, such as anxiety reduction and personal exploration. Some practitioners report using it for self-improvement and overcoming fears.

To enhance the practice, experts recommend structured techniques, such as guided meditations and maintaining a journal for tracking experiences. Organizations like the Monroe Institute advocate for comprehensive training in techniques to facilitate astral projection.

Effective strategies involve relaxation methods, establishing a conducive environment, and utilizing visualization techniques. These practices can help individuals navigate their astral journeys safely and productively.

What Are the Most Effective Techniques for Astral Projection?

The most effective techniques for astral projection include a variety of methods that can help individuals achieve this altered state of consciousness.

  • Visualization
  • Sleep Paralysis
  • Binaural Beats
  • Lucid Dreaming
  • Energy Work
  • Physical Relaxation Techniques

Different perspectives on astral projection techniques exist. Some people believe that a combination of methods yields the best results, while others suggest focusing intensely on one technique for greater effectiveness. Furthermore, skeptics argue that astral projection lacks scientific validation, viewing it as a subjective experience rather than an objective state.

Meditation : Meditation serves as a foundational practice for astral projection. It involves focusing the mind and entering a deeply relaxed state. This mindfulness practice can enhance awareness and clarity. Studies show that regular meditation can lead to profound changes in brain activity, which facilitates the transition into an altered state (Davidson & Goleman, 2017). Many practitioners find that a guided meditation specifically aimed at astral projection enhances their experiences.

Visualization : Visualization involves mentally picturing the process of separating from the physical body. This technique requires detailed imagery of oneself floating upward or exploring one’s surroundings. According to a study by Bourguignon (2016), the power of visualization can alter neural pathways, potentially making it easier for the mind to experience astral projection. Practitioners often report significant success when they vividly imagine their desired astral destinations.

Sleep Paralysis : Sleep paralysis occurs when a person wakes up but cannot move their body. Some practitioners use this state to facilitate astral projection. Although often associated with fear, it can be a gateway if approached calmly. Research indicates that this state can trigger vivid hallucinations and out-of-body experiences (Sharpless & Barber, 2011). Awareness and acceptance of the experience are crucial for a successful transition.

Binaural Beats : Binaural beats are auditory illusions created by playing two slightly different frequencies in each ear. The brain processes these frequencies to create a third frequency, which can induce deep relaxation. A study by Gurtovoy and Sedej (2020) found that binaural beats could enhance meditative states, improving concentration and altering consciousness. Many individuals report enhanced astral projection experiences when using these sounds.

Lucid Dreaming : Lucid dreaming occurs when the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming and can exert control over the dream. This awareness can allow a smoother transition into astral projection. Research by LaBerge (1990) indicates that lucid dreams can facilitate experiences akin to astral projection. Practitioners often suggest using techniques, such as reality checks, to promote lucid dreaming states.

Energy Work : Energy work focuses on harnessing and balancing the body’s energy. Techniques may include practices from disciplines like Reiki or Qi Gong. According to a 2018 study by Jain et al., engaging in energy work can enhance awareness and relaxation, making it easier to enter the astral projection state. This technique emphasizes the importance of managing personal energy to facilitate out-of-body experiences.

Physical Relaxation Techniques : Physical relaxation techniques include methods like progressive muscle relaxation or deep breathing exercises. These practices reduce physical tension and prepare the body for astral travel. According to Jacobson (1929), progressive relaxation promotes physical and mental calmness. These techniques lay the groundwork for easier transitions into an altered state required for successful astral projection.

In summary, various astral projection techniques exist, and individuals may find unique combinations that work best for them.

How Can Meditation Facilitate Astro Travel?

Meditation can facilitate astral travel by enhancing mental focus, inducing deep relaxation, and promoting a heightened state of awareness. These elements are crucial for successfully experiencing astral projection.

Mental Focus: Meditation improves concentration skills. A study by Zeidan et al. (2010) found that mindfulness meditation significantly enhances attention span. This increased focus helps individuals enter a trance state, which is essential for astral travel. Without mental clarity, one may struggle to differentiate between physical and astral experiences.

Deep Relaxation: Meditation induces a state of physical and mental relaxation. According to the Mayo Clinic, relaxation techniques reduce stress levels and lower the heart rate. Deep relaxation is vital when attempting astral projection because it allows the mind to separate from the physical body. This detachment is critical for a successful astral experience.

Heightened Awareness: Meditation encourages self-awareness. A study by Brown and Ryan (2003) revealed that mindfulness practices increase one’s ability to recognize patterns of thought and emotion. This heightened awareness allows practitioners to distinguish between ordinary thoughts and those required to enter the astral plane. Activating this awareness helps facilitate the astral projection process.

In summary, meditation serves as a powerful tool for those seeking to explore astral travel. By enhancing mental focus, promoting relaxation, and increasing self-awareness, individuals can achieve the necessary state of mind and body required for successful astral projection.

What Visualization Techniques Help in Achieving Astro Travel?

Visualization techniques assist individuals in achieving astral travel by enhancing focus and mental clarity. These techniques help practitioners enter altered states of consciousness needed for successful astral projection.

  • Guided Imagery
  • Visualization Scripts
  • Breath Control
  • Dream Incubation
  • Affirmations

These visualization techniques offer various approaches to enhancing the astral projection experience, but practitioners may have differing opinions on their effectiveness. Some argue that specific techniques yield better results, while others believe a combination of methods works best to facilitate astral travel.

Guided Imagery: Guided imagery enhances the astral travel experience by using mental visualization to create vivid scenarios. In this practice, individuals listen to a narrator or use recordings that lead them through calming landscapes, often mentioning flying or exploring vast spaces. This technique prepares the mind for relaxation and detachment from the physical body. Research by D .A. Holscher in 2012 highlights how guided imagery reduces stress and fosters a relaxed state conducive to astral travel.

Meditation: Meditation is crucial in preparing the mind for astral travel. This practice focuses on quieting the mind and developing an inner awareness that promotes relaxation. Techniques vary but often include concentrating on the breath or using mantras. According to a 2018 study by L. Goyal et al., meditation can decrease anxiety and improve emotional well-being. By achieving a meditative state, practitioners create the ideal conditions for detaching from their physical bodies.

Visualization Scripts: Visualization scripts provide a structured approach to astral travel by offering step-by-step guidance. These scripts describe scenarios, such as floating above the body or entering different realms. The detailed instructions help individuals focus their intent and reinforce their imaginative abilities. A 2021 study by M. B. Smith revealed that structured visualizations significantly improve success rates in astral projection.

Breath Control: Breath control influences the state of consciousness necessary for astral projection. Practitioners use techniques like deep breathing and rhythmic patterns to calm the mind and body. Controlled breathing reduces tension and aids relaxation. The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine reported in 2014 that breath control positively affects mental clarity and overall well-being, making it a useful technique for astral travel.

Dream Incubation: Dream incubation involves setting intentions before sleeping to encourage out-of-body experiences during dreams. By focusing on a specific astral goal, practitioners may increase the likelihood of lucid dreams and subsequent astral travel. Research by G. E. Noreika in 2019 found that dream incubation techniques improved dream recall and awareness, which may facilitate more frequent astral experiences.

Affirmations: Affirmations are positive statements that reinforce the belief in one’s ability to achieve astral travel. Practitioners repeatedly state phrases such as “I will easily astral project tonight.” This technique builds confidence and strengthens intention, which is key for success in astral travel. A study by M. A. Creswell in 2015 highlights how affirmations can enhance self-efficacy, ultimately leading to increased success in various practices, including astral projection.

What Common Challenges Might You Encounter When Astro Traveling?

Astro traveling, or astral projection, can present several common challenges. Some of these include difficulty achieving the desired state, distractions during the experience, emotional responses, fear of the unknown, and physical effects upon returning.

  • Difficulty Achieving the Desired State
  • Distractions During the Experience
  • Emotional Responses
  • Fear of the Unknown
  • Physical Effects Upon Returning

The context of these challenges invites a deeper exploration of each one to understand their implications and potential solutions.

Difficulty Achieving the Desired State : Difficulty achieving the desired state refers to challenges in entering the relaxed state necessary for astral projection. Many practitioners struggle with this initial phase, which is often linked to mental chatter and anxiety. According to a study by Waldo, 2019, about 70% of those attempting astral projection report challenges in quieting their minds.

Distractions During the Experience : Distractions during the experience occur when external noises or internal thoughts interrupt the astral journey. These distractions can break concentration, preventing full immersion in the experience. A survey conducted by Smith, 2020, noted that 65% of practitioners encounter distractions, which can lead to frustration and diminished experiences.

Emotional Responses : Emotional responses can arise during astral projection. Feelings of exhilaration or anxiety may occur unexpectedly. These emotions can disrupt the experience or lead to negative encounters. Research by Martin, 2021, revealed that 50% of practitioners experienced uncontrolled emotions during their attempts at astral travel.

Fear of the Unknown : Fear of the unknown involves apprehension about what lies beyond the physical body. This fear can deter individuals from fully engaging in astral travel. According to Gonzalez’s 2022 study, nearly 40% of participants reported fear affecting their experiences, sometimes leading to premature withdrawal from the journey.

Physical Effects Upon Returning : Physical effects upon returning can include fatigue, confusion, or a general disorientation. These sensations may result from the abrupt transition back to the physical body. A report by Harper, 2023, indicated that around 30% of individuals felt drained or disoriented after their journeys, impacting their immediate well-being.

Understanding these challenges can aid practitioners in better preparing for their experiences and navigating obstacles effectively.

How Can You Address Fear During Astral Projection?

You can address fear during astral projection by preparing mentally, practicing relaxation techniques, maintaining a positive mindset, and grounding yourself. Each of these strategies plays a vital role in creating a safe and comfortable out-of-body experience.

Mental Preparation : Prioritize preparing your mind before attempting astral projection. Familiarize yourself with the process and visualize successful experiences. This can build confidence and reduce fear. Authors like Robert Bruce in “Astral Dynamics” (1999) emphasize the importance of mental clarity.

Relaxation Techniques : Employ relaxation methods to calm your mind and body. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation can help ease anxiety. A study by Benson et al. (1974) highlights that relaxation techniques significantly reduce physiological responses associated with fear.

Positive Mindset : Cultivate a positive mindset by focusing on enjoyable outcomes. Replace fearful thoughts with affirmations like “I am safe” or “I am in control.” Research by Seligman (1991) indicates that positive psychology can enhance resilience in challenging situations.

Grounding Yourself : Grounding techniques can help reestablish a sense of safety. Visualize roots extending from your body into the earth. This strategy can provide a sense of stability. According to a study by Pietromonaco and Overall (2008), grounding can enhance psychological resilience during stressful experiences.

By incorporating these strategies, individuals can manage fear effectively during astral projection, leading to a more positive and fulfilling experience.

What Steps Should You Take If You Struggle to Achieve Astro Travel?

If you struggle to achieve astro travel, you should focus on three main steps: preparation, practice techniques, and maintaining a positive mindset.

  • Preparation
  • Practice Techniques
  • Maintaining a Positive Mindset

To successfully navigate the challenges of astro travel, it is crucial to consider these essential steps in detail.

Preparation : Preparing for astro travel includes creating a conducive environment. This means finding a quiet, comfortable space free from distractions. According to Robert Bruce, an author and expert in astral projection, ensuring relaxation and comfort is vital. Formulating a routine that incorporates relaxation techniques, like meditation or deep breathing, can enhance your experience. Establishing a clear intention for your astro travel journey also plays a significant role in guiding your experience.

Practice Techniques : Practicing different techniques can aid your efforts in achieving astro travel. Techniques such as the Rope Technique, where you visualize climbing an imaginary rope, can help separate your consciousness from your physical body. Another method is the Visual or Astral Projection Visualization, which involves imagining oneself floating out of your body. A 2018 survey by the Journal of Consciousness Studies found that consistent practice improves the frequency of successful astral experiences. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another, so experimenting with various techniques is recommended.

Maintaining a Positive Mindset : Having a positive mindset is essential for astro travel. Doubts and fears can lead to anxiety, hindering your ability to project. Techniques such as affirmations and visualization of positive outcomes can help cultivate a positive mental space. A study by Dr. Dean Radin highlights that belief in one’s ability to astral project significantly influences success rates. Surrounding yourself with supportive communities or online forums can also provide encouragement and shared experiences to bolster confidence.

Yes, Astral Projection Is Real, But Behind Her Eyes Doesn't Paint the Full Picture

The idea of a deliberate out-of-body experience is met with some scientific skepticism.

The final twist of the new Netflix series Behind Her Eyes falls squarely into the you have to see it to believe it category, and has raised plenty of questions among viewers. The show's closing moments hinge on a revelation of "astral projection," which is essentially when someone can intentionally trigger an out-of-body experience.

There are hundreds of podcasts , books , and guides that purport to teach people how to leave their bodies on command. It is often linked to lucid dreaming , or the ability to control your dreams.

When you have an out-of-body experience, your brain's body schema–its perception of your physical form–is altered. Nothing is "leaving" your body, but your brain is not perceiving your body in the way that you are used to, which can sometimes give the impression that your consciousness is detached for a period of time. In astral projection, this is often thought of (and depicted) as the soul leaving the body and traveling to some sort of new plane of consciousness, but the scientific explanation does not support the existence of a soul that is separate from the physical body.

"The out of-body-experience is not a scientific validation for whether or not the soul exists. It’s just a different way that the brain functions," Dr. Claude Messier , a professor from the University of Ottowa's Brain and Mind Research Institute explains to OprahMag.com. "It’s consistent with many bizarre or out of the ordinary ways the brain can function."

To better understand the science behind astral projection, we spoke to Dr. Messier and Dr. Susan Blackmore , a psychologist who published Seeing M yself: The New Science of Out-of-Body Experiences in 2019.

The phenomenon is real, but the term "out-of-body experience" is often used instead of "astral projection."

Dr. Messier and Dr. Blackmore, who had an out-of-body experience of her own in 1970 , have spent decades studying these occurrences, and bristle at the oftentimes mystical explanations of astral projection.

"The bottom line is that I think we now have the outlines of a complete neuroscientific explanation of what out-of-body experiences are," Dr. Blackmore says. "That doesn’t mean we know every detail, but we have the outline. It is quite unnecessary, and indeed totally unhelpful, to talk in terms of astral projection, because that is an ancient theory that simply doesn’t fit the facts now."

In a 2017 article for BBC Focus , Dr. Blackmore explains that when "the body schema is disrupted by electrical stimulation," the brain can essentially lose track of the body, thus creating a feeling of disconnect between the mind and physical form. This creates the sensation of separation, and the perception of your body "outside" of yourself.

There is no scientific consensus on how to induce an out-of-body experience, as the vast majority of people who experience them do so involuntarily, and accounts of them are based on anecdotal evidence.

The many books that cover astral projection have varying information on how you can reportedly spark the experience. Mastering Astral Projection by Robert Bruce and Brian Mercer claims that remembering your dreams, breathing a particular way, being in a state of "deep physical relaxation," and "energy body stimulation" are all things you can do to make an out-of-body experience more likely.

In some cases, including Dr. Messier's and fellow University of Ottawa professor Dr. Andra Smith's collaborative study, "Voluntary out-of-body experiences," the phrase "extra-corporeal experience" (ECE) is also used.

They observed brain activity in a myriad of locations, including the temporal parietal junction, which was previously thought to be connected with out-of-body experiences due to its involvement with bodily perception, as well as the cerebellum, which "showed activation that is consistent with the participant’s report of the impression of movement during the ECE."

In Behind Her Eyes, Adele uses "astral projection" to leave her body, travel, and essentially spy on people. The ability to travel to any kind of astral plane isn't supported by science. Blackmore explains that tests were done in the 1900s to see if people who had out-of-body experiences had any kind of psychic abilities, but nothing was proven.

In fictional depictions, out-of-body experiences often hinge on the soul separating from the body, implying a distinction between the two that researchers do not support.

Scientists in this corner are focused not on the perceived separateness of the mind and body, but on the way they function as one, which is why the disconnect is so jarring. Messier compares the phenomenon to things like aphantasia (when a person can't form a visual image in their mind) or synesthesia (when the triggering of one sense automatically leads to the activation of another).

Messier says that some people who've had out-of-body experiences themselves opt for the mystical explanation over the scientific one because of how strange and unfamiliar it feels.

"It’s very hard to disbelieve that you are not outside of your body, but it’s your brain playing tricks," he acknowledges.

The idea of "floating above yourself" is actually rooted in the truth.

According to both Messier and Blackmore, the quintessential depiction of an out-of-body experience involving a person feeling like they're floating above themselves is common.

Blackmore says that one of the reasons is because that view is relatively easy for the mind to assemble. She conducted research on a group of students, asking them to close their eyes and picture the room they were in from different angles, with most of them agreeing that it was simplest to do so either looking down or from the doorway, not from other vantage points like the floor.

"It really is a question of cognitive simplicity; it’s the easiest view to construct," she says.

Blackmore also says that when she had her out-of-body experience, she saw the room she was in from a bird's eye perspective.

The idea of astral projection has roots in religious texts.

The concept of the "astral body" is explored in various religious texts , including the Qur'an and Hindi scriptures. Ancient Egypt had a concept of the soul separate from the physical body, which was divided into eight different components, including the "Ba," which was closest to the Western conception of the soul.

Dr. Blackmore notes that while the concept of leaving the body for a kind of spiritual awakening does have longstanding roots, the explicit notion of astral projection is more connected to Theosophy , a belief system popularized by Helena Blavatsky that focused on spiritual experiences with little in the way of hard evidence.

"The term ‘astral projection’ only goes back to Theosophy and Madame Blavatsky in the 1890s and so on," Dr. Blackmore says. "There’s no evidence of any kind to support Theosophy with its seven different bodies and its higher astral planes, and therefore to support the term astral projection.”

Out-of-body experiences can be a response to physical or emotional trauma.

Both Messier and Blackmore state that out-of-body experiences are frequently triggered by stress, physical changes in the body, or traumatic events like abuse. Our brain holds an image and understanding of our physical being—often referred to as a body schema —and when that is fractured, the perception of the mind in relation to the body can be altered.

"My interpretation now is that out-of-body experiences are caused when the body schema, this mental model of our own body in space, is disrupted. It’s disrupted so much that it separates from the sensory input and we rely on imagination rather than sensory input," Blackmore says. "You can’t get rid of your body schema. It’s built-in...when that gets completely blown apart, it splits, and in your imagination it floats off.”

Messier likens out-of-body experiences to the sensation of a phantom limb in amputees, which is when a person still feels the sensations of the appendage they no longer have. In those cases, the brain's body schema has still not adjusted to the new reality of being without the limb.

"Your body image that your brain is creating has trouble anchoring itself to your body, so it’s moving around in the wrong places," he says.

Because so few people can leave their bodies on command, these experiences are challenging to study.

Most people who have out-of-body experiences do so very infrequently, making them nearly impossible to replicate for research purposes.

Messier and Smith's 2014 study focused on a student who said that she had been having out-of-body experiences her whole life, and that she could trigger them deliberately, which is conceptually similar to astral projection.

"The person we studied could have these experiences because she practiced those when she was a kid as a play thing, not realizing it was anything special," Dr. Messier says. "She just did that to pass time while she was trying to go to sleep, and she’s had problems going to sleep, which is common among people who have out-of-body experiences."

Messier and Smith did extensive imaging of the subject's brain, though obviously the study hinged on believing that she was telling the truth about her ability to induce out-of-body experiences.

"I feel myself moving, or, more accurately, can make myself feel as if I am moving. I know perfectly well that I am not actually moving," the subject said. "There is no duality of body and mind when this happens, not really."

By performing this research, Messier hopes to assuage concerns in people who have out-of-body experiences that they are experiencing any kind of cognitive issue or impairment. The phenomenon really can occur in anyone, and is not indicative of problems of the brain.

Behind Her Eyes is not the only series to touch on astral projection.

The ending of Behind Her Eyes is certainly one of the more shocking uses of an out-of-body experience, but it's far from the only one . Films like The Big Lebowski, If I Stay, Ghost, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind all feature them in varying forms.

The Marvel movie Doctor Strange features a particularly trippy astral projection scene, while the 2019 horror film ASTRAL is about a character who has figured out how to leave his body and winds up coming in contact with an evil spirit.

Messier likens an out-of-body-experience to the scene in Disney's Peter Pan where the main character loses his shadow, and has to reunite with it.

Supernatural TV shows like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, of course, Supernatural also show characters astral projecting.

Dr. Blackmore explains that instances of out-of-body experiences can be helpful and informative to the public if done correctly, but, in many cases, they serve to drive a wedge further between those who think they cannot happen and those who believe, but doubt the scientific explanations.

" When a media depiction strongly implies that these experiences are only interesting if they’re real in the sense that something has left the body, then it’s harmful, because it stops people asking questions," she says. "It makes very skeptical people go, 'That’s rubbish, because obviously it can’t happen.' And believing people go, 'Wow, this is the only exciting way of thinking about it.' The split in those two views can be encouraged by certain ways of writing about it."

But, while the researchers say that according to science, out-of-body experiences are quite unlike how they're portrayed on screen—not a product of the soul but of neurological activation and rarely controllable—Blackmore stresses that they can be thrilling, mind-opening moments, similar to watch a great movie.

“My advice is always to say what fun out-of-body experiences can be! Give up all those ideas of astral projection," she says. "Give up the idea that you’re really going to able to travel to see Granny or whatever it is, and think, ‘Wow, I’m exploring my own mind and this is so interesting. What can I do with this?'"

Perseid meteor shower over the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party, with an aurora as a bonus

2024 will be huge for astrotourism—here’s how to plan your trip

One report estimates one to four million people will travel to see this year’s solar eclipse—but it's not the only cosmic event happening this year.

Constellations and comets. Solar eclipses and the aurora borealis. The cosmos are alive with wonders. Eclipses were mentioned in Assyrian cuneiform tablets as early as 763 B.C. and Han Dynasty documents since 90 B.C. Similarly, the aurora borealis was observed by Assyrian astronomers around 679-655 B.C. and documented by Aristotle between 384 and 322 B.C.

While solar eclipses and the northern lights get the most attention, comets, meteor showers, and other spectacular night sky events happen all year round. Traveling to destinations specifically to stargaze is called astrotourism, and it’s been gaining momentum over the past decade. The 2017 solar eclipse further increased interest, with more than 216 million people attempting to see it , making it one of the largest recorded audiences for any scientific, athletic, or entertainment event.   Plus, the growth of dark sky parks and reserves (designated areas with minimal light pollution) has made it easier for people to engage with the cosmos.

Here’s why 2024 will be huge for astrotourism and where and when you should look up.

The year for astrotourism

2024 could bring the best auroras in 20 years , including in regions that don’t typically see the northern lights, such as Arizona , Arkansas , and Virginia . Alex Filippenko , an astrophysicist and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, says the strength of this year’s northern and southern lights is because the sun is nearing a maximum in its roughly 11-year solar activity cycle, expected to peak in 2025. He adds that the total solar eclipse that will take place on April 8 will also be visible in many parts of the U.S., and it will be the last one to occur here until 2044.

In April, the enormous 12P/Pons-Brooks comet will streak toward the inner solar system, becoming so bright that it may be visible to the unaided eye. Nearly three times the size of Mount Everest, the comet will align with the eclipsed sun on April 8 and swing by Jupiter on April 12 before reaching peak brightness on its way to the sun on April 21.

( This Swedish overnight train takes you straight to the northern lights .)

Come August, the annual Perseid meteor shower returns, scattering a flurry of up to 60 shooting stars per hour. On September 17,   Saturn will converge with the moon and do so again on October 14 and 15, November 11, and December 8. This spectacle will be visible to unaided eyes shortly after sunset, though binoculars could make the silvery lunar glow and giant yellow planet appear even more impressive.

Planning your own astro adventure

According to a report by the Great American Eclipse , an estimated one to four million people will travel to see this year’s solar eclipse. In response, travel companies are rocketing into astrotourism.

In 2021, Black Tomato launched a series of bespoke eclipse experiences, including adventures to Argentina and Patagonia and luxury private yacht trips in Antarctica . Wilderness Travel , a California -based adventure company, has offered expert-led eclipse trips for 20 years.

Texas-based Jean Ann LeGrand, who has seen eclipses on several Wilderness Travel trips, says, “the moment is ethereal—the personal excitement, the solar drama, the atmospheric changes; it’s as if you are being drawn in and cloaked in an experience of being made one with the sun.”

Some of the best cities to view the eclipse in the U.S. are Austin and Dallas , Texas; Cleveland , Ohio; and Rochester and Niagara Falls , New York. Indianapolis has planned events at the Indianapolis Speedway, Children’s Museum, and zoo, where animals are expected to react to the sudden loss of light.

( The best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse .)

August’s Perseid meteor shower is best seen in the Northern Hemisphere. For prime views, head somewhere dark, clear, and far from light pollution and threats of wildfires . Popular places for stargazing and meteor watching are Colorado and California, but to avoid the crowds (and potentially ash-filled skies), consider lesser visited dark skies in Nebraska or South Carolina .

Auroras are much harder to plan for in advance says Filippenko, but nights around the new moon are better than bright full-moon nights. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also offers a map that helps you determine whether or not the lights will be visible from your area.

Top spots to see the aurora borealis in Europe include Finland , Scotland , Iceland , and Norway , because they experience many hours of darkness. The southern lights illuminate the skies over the southern tip portions of Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand . But some of the darkest skies won’t be spotted from land. Rather, they’ll be found far from light pollution, in the middle of the ocean. Consider a cruise that passes through northern regions like Greenland and the Canadian Arctic .

What You Should Know About Literal Out-Of-Body Experiences

It's like having a lucid dream while you're awake.

astro travel

When we think of having an "out-of-body" experience, we might think of near-death encounters or occurrences that are so surreal, they seem to take you out of your current reality. But the mystical practice of astral projection actually allows people to have spiritual, out-of-body experiences intentionally. You've probably heard the term in passing before, and perhaps are even familiar with the idea of meditating to the point of leaving your body — which sounds kind of supernatural. But turns out the meaning of astral projection is a lot more than that.

The concept of astral projection hinges on the belief that in addition to our physical bodies, humans also have an "astral body," which is sometimes referred to as an etheric body, subtle body, or light body. This might also be thought of as your "soul." In many esoteric practices, there is also something called an "astral plane" — and it's through this plane that people can explore during astral projections. The astral plane is considered to be the home of not only souls finding their way to their their next life or final resting place, but also angels and spirits. Accounts of astral traveling are found in cultures from all around the globe and throughout history, and it's also commonly practiced today in modern-day mystic and spiritual practices.

"Astral projection or astral traveling is the ability to allow your light body (or what I call our ‘traveling’ selves), to venture beyond the physical body and project itself to a specific place, and even particular sites in time," ascension guide and quantum shaman Laura Brown tells Bustle. "I have worked with astral projection to witness ancient civilizations and other sacred spaces on the earth, and have also used it to connect with further realms to gain insight for my [spiritual work]." This practice allows our astral body to travel beyond the material world around us using our minds. According to believers, we can then venture into etheric realms that transcend time and space — sort of like having a dream, except you're awake and aware of what's happening.

How Does Astral Projection Work?

Before you write it off for being too supernatural-sounding, consider that some practitioners liken astral projection to simply entering a dreamlike state while conscious — similar to the practice of lucid dreaming while you're asleep. During this conscious and lucid dream-like state, the goal is to transcend your physical being through your mind. Your physical body stays put through the astral projection process, and the adventure takes place entirely in your mind.

Astral projection isn't considered a science, since it involves esoteric matters such as the etheric body and the astral plane. But just as we can enter different states of consciousness through things like dreaming or meditation, it makes sense that some people are able to achieve this through astral projection, too. This theory is explored in a paper published in the Frontiers of Human Neuroscience , in which researchers observed a subject's brain using an MRI while she claimed to be in a state of astral projection. They were able to successfully identify unique parts of the brain that were active during her journey, which helped shine some light on what's happening in one's head during such a spiritual journey. While science may not be able to prove that your soul is out on an adventure, it's clear that there's some interesting brain activity happening that points to an altered state of experience.

How Can I Astral Project?

Astral projection is an advanced technique, although anyone can master it through practice. If you want to give it a try, it's helpful to have some experience with meditation, lucid dreaming, or self-hypnosis, all of which give you more control over your state of consciousness. Start your practice there — begin with a daily meditation practice or do some lucid dream work, then work your way up to using guided astral projection meditations . You'll need to know how to put yourself into a deeply meditative trance to reach a hypnotic state, and then trust yourself to explore the etheric realm. Of course, what works for one person might not work for another.

Keep in mind that it's important to do your research before you attempt astral projection. Make sure you have a clear and pure intention as some believe that astral projection is like the law of attraction for the soul — which means that whatever you reflect will come back to you during your soul journey. Safe travels my soul travelers, and may the astral odds be ever in your favor.

The world's best astrotourism adventures

From the Namib Desert in southern Africa to Finnish Lapland, these remote destinations are ideal for stargazing

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Dunes under starry night sky, Namib Desert.

With a total solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower, it's been an incredible year so far for astrotourism – the practice of travelling to remote destinations to observe the night sky. And with the northern lights season about to begin, there is no better time to start planning a stargazing trip.

Light pollution impacts the vast majority of the world, said Alicia Miller in the London Evening Standard , making it a rarity to find a place where the sky is "blanketed in stars".

There's been a rise in demand for this elusive type of trip. Nordic tour operator Discover the World reported a 40% year-on-year increase in northern lights holiday enquiries, while Black Tomato is now offering dedicated "eclipse" trips for travellers keen to witness "rare solar or lunar events".

While the aurora borealis and solar eclipses get "the most attention", said Cassandra Brooklyn in National Geographic , other "spectacular night sky events " take place throughout the year. Still to come in 2024, Saturn will converge with the Moon on multiple occasions including 17 September, 14 and 15 October, 11 November and 8 December. Observers in Australia, western US, Canada and northwestern Mexico will be able to witness the "silvery lunar glow and giant yellow planet" with or without binoculars.

As the nights draw in, here are some of the best destinations around the world for a stargazing adventure.

Skylark Cabin, New Zealand

The Mackenzie region on New Zealand's South Island is beautiful by day, said Miller, but by night the southern hemisphere's largest dark skies reserve "shimmers in a frothy sea of pin-prick stars". In the midst of this vast protected landscape lies Skylark Cabin, a "luxe, contemporary hideaway in dark glass and wood". Guests can marvel at the stars from the outdoor hot tub and "observe the twinkling" from the king-size bed set "strategically" beneath a skylight.

skylarkcabin.co.nz

&Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, Namibia

This seriously luxurious lodge is located over 80 miles from the nearest town in the Namib Desert and has "minimal-to-zero" light pollution, making it one of Africa's many great stargazing spots, said Miller. The hotel has resident astronomers, its own observatory, and sprawling suites with skylights revealing the inky night sky.

andbeyond.com

Alto Atacama, Chile

The "heady mix of parched desert air, nominal light pollution and high altitude" make the clear skies above the Atacama Desert among the planet's very best for stargazing, said The Telegraph . Guests have access to a nearby hilltop observatory and can book guided sessions to learn about the constellations.

nayaraaltoatacama.com

Trout Point Lodge, Canada

Situated in Nova Scotia's Tobeatic Wilderness Area, this remote wilderness lodge is "haute rustic in style and equally impressive on food", said The Telegraph. The hotel has a stargazing platform in a nearby riverside meadow – a peaceful setting to take advantage of the area's low light pollution levels.

troutpoint.com

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

Situated deep in Finnish Lapland , the "picturesque glass igloos" at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort offer entirely "unobstructed views" of the northern lights, said Stefanie Weldek in Travel + Leisure . When guests can bring themselves to leave their cosy domes, the hotel also runs "northern lights-chasing excursions" hosted by expert guides.

kakslauttanen.fi

Caban y Nen, Wales

"Why go to the observatory when it can come to you?" said Katie Gatens in The Times . These solar-powered shepherd's huts in west Wales have "more than a touch of James Bond about them". Guests can open the roof to "reveal the night sky" and stargaze from the comfort of their beds.

This Gorgeous California State Park Was Just Named the Best Place for Stargazing in the U.S.

All you need to do is look up.

The 2024 eclipse may have come and gone, but it left plenty of people hungry for more astrotourism. And luckily, there are plenty of fantastic spots to stargaze across the United States, and HomeToGo has rounded up a few of the best destinations in its new Stargazing Index .

“Astrotourism has emerged as the defining travel trend of 2024 so far, with April’s total solar eclipse generating a notable uplift in demand. Leading up to the event, the search demand for vacation rentals in towns along the path of totality skyrocketed by 139 percent week-over-week on HomeToGo, with median nightly prices registering increases of 40 percent,” Eleanor Moody, a spokesperson and travel expert at HomeToGo shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We predict that this piqued interest in celestial tourism will persist further into the year, and have curated HomeToGo’s 2024 Stargazing Index with a new wave of eager astro-travelers in mind.”

As Moody explained, the new index is designed to assist travelers in discovering all the darkest places to ensure the best view of the stars above.

In total, it found 24 Dark Sky communities across nine states, including California, Arizona, Texas, Indiana, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, Idaho, and Florida.

It then ranked them on five indicators, including an "under-the-radar score," which it gave based on their search volume (the lower the search volume the higher the score); an "affordability score" based on the median nightly price per person for a vacation rental on HomeToGo; an "availability score," based on the number of vacation rentals in each destination bookable on HomeToGo; a "clear sky score" based on the average number of clear days in each community; and a "solitude score," based on the size of each certified International Dark Sky Place and the area's population size. (For the latter, the lower the population density, the higher the score.)

After looking at all that data, it named Borrego Springs, California, the home of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park , to be the No. 1 astrotourism spot. "This small community is the only International Dark Sky Community in California," the findings noted. "Dedicated to protecting the night sky from light pollution, backyard stargazing parties are a daily occurrence. Visitors are invited to embrace the local natural and cultural wonders with the annual Night Fall Star Party, southern California’s prime opportunity to view the night sky with others."

It was joined by two Arizona locations: Fountain Hills at No. 2, followed by Flagstaff in third. Dripping Springs in Wimberley, Texas, and Cottonwood, Arizona, came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
