11 Most Beautiful Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese islands stretch across the Aegean Sea, leaving picture-postcard villages in their wake. The Dodecanese are made up of 12 main islands plus another 150 islands; only 26 islands are inhabited. Travelers who are interested in Greek mythology and ancient ruins will have a field day here. The islands also are a perfect destination for those who want to chill out in less crowded destinations where they can hike, walk on pebble beaches and absorb a colorful local culture.

11. Nisyros [SEE MAP]

Nisyros started out life as a volcano, which after 130,000 years is still active but not erupting. There are some sandy beaches but most of the coastline is rocky. It is popular as a summer vacation spot, through travelers should not expect five-star luxury. Mandraki is the island’s capital and harbor. The houses here are made of volcano rocks and insulated with pumice-stone. The island contains many Orthodox Christian churches as well as monasteries, the largest of which is Panagia Spiliani that is next to a medieval castle built by the Knights Hospitalier in the 14th century. Travelers may want to try the traditional island drink, soumada, which tastes like almonds and is non-alcoholic.

10. Kastellorizo [SEE MAP]

Kastellorizo is the smallest of the Dodecanese, but don’t be fooled by its size. It’s a peaceful island, with picturesque village buildings right down to the waterfront. Because it is sparsely populated, it is a good place to enjoy the biodiversity of nature, including water turtles and monarchos seals. With only about 200 residents, Kastellorizo is known as “the red castle” after an ancient castle the Knights of Saint John built from colored rocks. Scenic Kastellorizo village is the island’s only populated area. It sports cobblestone alleys and traditional colorful mansions with wooden and iron balconies.

9. Halki [SEE MAP]

Halki, the smallest of the inhabited Dodecanese islands, has less than 500 residents. Also known as Chalki, many of its residents migrated to Tarpon Springs, Florida in the last century. They left behind them the ruins of a medieval castle that still contains original frescoes. The island does not have a natural water supply – all water has to be imported from Rhodes or saved in cisterns when it rains. Nimporio is the only village and main port of the island. The island has been ruled by everyone from the Romans to the Turks to the Italians and the Greeks. Tourism is its main industry, with fishing coming in second.

8. Astypalaia [SEE MAP]

Astypalaia is connected to Greek mythology, since Astypalaia was a woman who was kidnapped by a disguised Poseidon. Chora is the island’s capital town and port. It is one of the most picturesque towns in the Aegean, perched on a rock that advances into the sea, forming two bays. On the top is Chora’s castle towering over the town. At one time, the Querini castle was the town’s crowning glory, though stones from it have been used to build houses. A museum near the old port houses a collection of Neolithic pottery. An ancient graveyard contains the remains of infants and small children in pottery urns; the cemetery is believed to date back to 750 BC. Other ancient religious ruins can be found throughout the island. Other Roman ruins, such as a bath with a mosaic floor, can be found on the island.

7. Symi [SEE MAP]

Symi is a most picturesque island, with buildings stretching from the coastline up the mountains. Its main town, commonly referred to by the same name as the island itself, is one of the most impressive ports in the Greek island with elegant mansions on the slopes of a hill. One of the key sights on the island is the Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, which is still used by monks and which attracts visitors from all over the world. The town of Symi alone is home to 13 churches. The island is popular with day trippers, but visitors with more time might want to charter a boat to visit a secluded beach.

Leros is a great place for travelers who just want to kick back, do a little beachcombing and soak in the local culture. The relaxation starts with an 11-hour ferry ride from Piraeus, though travelers in a hurry can take a 45-minute plane ride from Athens. The island has an interesting history, having been ruled over the centuries by the Byzantines, the Italians, the Germans and the Greeks, among others. Its port was second only to Crete in the number of times it was bombed in World War II. Perhaps the key tourist attraction is the Knights of Saint John medieval castle. Island hosts offer simple accommodations and a variety of taverns.

5. Patmos [SEE MAP]

Patmos, one of the most northern of the Dodecanese, may not have many people – the island’s total population is about 3,000 – but it does have a significant religious history. It was mentioned in the Bible’s Book of Revelation, when John of Patmos had a revelation from Jesus. Many sites on the island are connected to John, making Patmos a good destination for a religious pilgrimage. Christian sites include the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse where Jon had his vision. Archeological remains date back to 2000 BC. The largest village, as well as capital and port of the island, is Skála where visitors will find accommodation and fresh-fish tavernas among buildings used by the Italians during the Italian Rule of the Dodecanese Islands.

4. Kalymnos [SEE MAP]

Travelers seeking a more active vacation may want to head for the island of Kalymnos for some hiking and rock climbing. Travelers, however, should be experienced climbers who can handle the difficult terrain. Unlike some of its neighbours, the island is comparatively green, its roads lined with pink oleanders contrasting with brilliantly blue water. Kalymnos has a rich history in sponge diving. A disease however killed off the sponges in the sea, but the island still celebrates its “gold” with a Sponge Week festival that takes place the week after Easter. Because of the rocky terrain, the island has little agriculture, though it is famous for its citrus fruits, as well as painted head scarves or women.

3. Karpathos [SEE MAP]

Because it’s more remote than other islands in the Dodecanese, Karpathos has retained much of its cultural and ethnic heritage. Its Folk Art Museum reflects this heritage. Beaches are particularly popular with visitors though not all of the island’s have sandy beaches or are easily accessible. Karpathos has a glorious history, including being mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. Travelers interested in archeology may enjoy a visit to the ruins of ancient altars and sanctuaries, some of which date back to the 6th century BC, including the chapel of Agia Fotini, an early Christian basilica.

Characterized by long strips of clean, white beaches and rolling farmland rich in grapes, figs, olives, corn and wheat, the island of Kos offers beautiful landscapes, historic sites and great beaches all in a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can explore attractions like the ruins of an ancient marketplace and the 14th century fortress built by The Knights of Saint John of Rhodes. In the charming city center of whitewashed buildings in Kos Town, there are an abundant selection of hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

1. Rhodes [SEE MAP]

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, also having the biggest population of any of the islands. Located in the east Aegean Sea, it is the historical capital of the islands. Think Colossus of Rhodes. The City of Rhodes’ medieval center draws visitors from all over Europe. Picturesque small villages and beach resorts can be found outside Rhodes Town. The island, which dates back to the Neolithic period, has lots of rocky shores, while inland a variety of crops such as wine grapes, olives and citrus fruit are grown. At one time, the city was a cultural and commercial center of the Mediterranean.

Nice post with interesting and with some undiscovered by massive tourism islands. Especially Leros, which I have extensively written about at my blog is really beautiful and a hidden gem. Great job!

La sublime Astypalea è ovviamente una delle più belle isole del Dodecaneso e della Grecia. Vicino alle Cicladi, appartiene storicamente e culturalmente a questo arcipelago. Conservata dal turismo di massa, a differenza di molte isole greche, offre bellissimi paesaggi aridi, punteggiati da villaggi con case imbiancate a calce.

ABOUT THE DODECANESE ISLANDS

The Dodecanese island group is located at the southeastern side of the Aegean Sea and it translated to "12 islands", named after the 12 biggest islands in this region: Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Kalymnos, Patmos, Astypalea, Simi, Leros, Nisyros, Halki, Tilos and Lipsi . In reality, the Dodecanese Islands are more than 12, as they also include numerous other islets that are usually small and uninhabited. The most popular Dodecanese islands that also attract the biggest number of tourists are Rhodes and Kos . These two islands are in fact among Greece's top tourist resorts. Kalymnos, Patmos and Leros are also relatively popular, with a rapidly growing tourist infrastructure, nonetheless without losing their authentic characteristics. On this island of around 100 residents near Samos and the Turkish coast, which celebrates the arrival of every ship, vacations consist of the bare minimum: some beaches with sand and tamarisk trees, two small villages and a couple of café-bars where you’ll enjoy tasty food made with local ingredients. Festivals with live music and traditional island dancing occur often. Like seafarers discovering a secret island is exactly how you feel when you disembark on the small pier. Chances are you’ll be getting off your own craft, as this is how most arrive here, but you can get a boat from Samos or Patmos. Having a boat is useful here, as there are few roads. People, too, are scarce; there are only 40 permanent residents . What you will find in abundance are oleasters, olive trees, pine trees, cicadas and simplicity. The two tavernas use local ingredients, especially cheeses and meat. -Olga Charami

This island, known as the Butterfly of the Aegean, does indeed look like one when seen from above. Hora, the main town, is one of the prettiest villages in the Aegean, more like a Cycladic settlement than a place in the Dodecanese. The climb up to the castle takes effort but rewards with views. Astypalea has many beaches, and it’s easy to find that feeling of splendid isolation . Livadi Beach is large and sandy; Kaminakia Beach is better for snorkelers. Vatses is ideal for the sunset, and the islets of Kounoupes and Koutsomyti, accessible by boat, are surrounded by turquoise waters. Pebbled Tzanakia has a view of Hora, where you should head after your swim and grab a table near the landmark Moungos café for some people watching. Here, you’ll see almost everyone on the island stroll by as they head out for dinner or drinks. N.B. Leave some room in your suitcase for a souvenir: a jar of the island’s excellent honey. -Nena Dimitriou

This satellite of Rhodes is one of those islands that casts a spell even before you get off the boat at the port, which in this case is also the capital, Emborio . The coastal road runs in front of colorful 19th-century townhouses with uniform red-tiled roofs and wooden window frames. There are very few cars in the capital, and car traffic is banned entirely from 18:00 onwards every evening. You can reach the beaches of Pontamos or Ftenagia on foot, or take a tour boat to two-sided Tracheia Beach , where you can decide on which flank of the peninsula’s neck to lay your towel. Make the one-hour trek from the abandoned village of Horio to the medieval castle, on the way to which you can see the ancient thrones of Zeus and Hecate. From the 269-meter summit within the castle walls, you’ll be rewarded with great views of the island and of southern Rhodes. -Nena Dimitriou

Beyond the lovely beaches and interesting architecture that characterize Kalymnos, it is its cliffs and rock faces that attract most people to the island. It is, in short, an internationally renowned rock-climbing destination. Hundreds of routes, most of them located around Armeos and Masouri , will keep you busy if you are a climber, or impress you if you’re just visiting. Either way, everyone ends up on a beach for a refreshing dip before indulging in plates of local goat or fresh fish, the latter caught by one of the largest fishing fleets in the Mediterranean. -Olga Charami

This island simply won’t let you get bored; it has lovely hiking trails , more than 100 beaches , traditional villages and registered historic settlements that look like illustrations from old books, as well as plenty of summer festivals with live music performed on lyres and Greek bagpipes; you’ll find it hard to resist joining in the fun and mixing with the friendly locals. Make sure you swim in the turquoise waters of Apella or Araki, explore the ruins of Kazarma and visit colorful Olympos, where the local women wear floral headscarves and still use looms and wood-fired ovens. One of the highlights on the island’s calendar of festivals is the celebration at the Church of Ai-Yiannis in the ancient necropolis of Vroukounta (August 28-30). -Nena Dimitriou

The traditions of Kasos are even more moving than its beaches and villages. Time-honored celebrations, vibrant local music and special customs have been preserved, against all odds. Lyres and violins, mantinades (rhyming couplets, often set to music) and special dances are part of impromptu festivities and church fairs. The local cuisine follows a culinary tradition based on old recipes. Try the miniature dolma (stuffed vine leaves), the delicious cheeses, the seafood meze and the homemade pasta . Chances are you’ll be offered one or more of these by the locals, who are generous and welcoming and consider visitors to be their personal guests.-Olga Charami

Perched at the easternmost edge of Greece, Kastellorizo is a tiny jewel. Known as Megisti until the Middle Ages , it became Kastellorizo when the Knights of the Order of St John built their castle, “Castello Rosso,” on top of the red rock that rises above the port. Unknown to most people, except for the tens of thousands of Kastellorizian expatriates in Australia and a few Italians who discovered it in the 1970s, the island was introduced to the international public in 1991, thanks to the Oscar-winning film “Mediterraneo.” The minaret of the mosque at the entrance of the port is a reminder of the Turkish occupation, but the colorful neoclassical mansions, the impressive public buildings and the churches bear witnesses to the great wealth that maritime trade brought to the island in the 19th century. Kastellorizo is a color, a dip at the port, elegant accommodation, a walk up to Aghios Georgios tou Vounou (“St George of the Mountain”); it is the peace and tranquility of a swim in the embrace of the Blue Cave. -Maya Tsoclis

Its worldwide fame may be linked to Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, who was born on the island and taught at the Asklepion here, but Kos has much more than just this connection to offer its visitors. For years, the island excelled at package tourism, but today, thanks to its new airport, the restored central boulevard of Finikes in Kos Town and the constant improvements to the island’s restaurant scene, it attracts individual travelers who do not wear all-inclusive hotel wristbands. The more adventurous of these come for the excellent local wines and other food products, boat excursions, horse riding on the beach and cycling on the 12km network. The rest are more than happy to spend their vacation swimming in the bright blue waters and sunbathing on sandy beaches. -John Papadimitriou

Until a few years ago, a close circle of initiates were the only visitors here. The island has been spared all that comes with mass tourism, and with minimal night-life, it retains an air of small-town intimacy. The bay of Aghia Marina is one of the Aegean’s loveliest; it’s lined with old houses in bold tones of ochre, and the settlement is crowned with a Byzantine castle. The fascinating town of Lakki (Portolago), built from scratch by the Italians as a military base, was constructed entirely in the interwar Rationalist style. Mylos , arguably one of the best restaurant in the entire Aegean, lures day-trippers off their yachts – don’t miss it! -Alexandros Massavetas

For Years it was something of a secret as a holiday destination. But even now that the secret is out, Lipsi remains an island for people who don’t want much more on their vacation than a nice beach with a couple of tamarisk trees and crystal-clear waters . A certain cosmopolitan air has also been noticed in the past few years, as old local houses are being bought up, mainly by Italians. Lipsi is also known for the Fokiano grape, which traveled all the way to the Vatican back in its heyday, so you won’t want for wine, especially as there’s a winery here producing the stuff. It also has a traditional dairy making cheese and other delightful foodie stops. And as for the swimming, your choices are not limited to the island itself: take the regular ferry service out to Aspronissia, two tiny islets with beaches of smooth white stones and clear, turquoise waters. -John Papadimitriou

How about a hot walk inside the crater of an active volcano, with the strong smell of sulfur wafting about? That’s just one of the surprises that Nisyros has in store for you.The others? There are quiet beaches with black-red sand, the legendary Oasis taverna for meze and parties, raki and nibbles on Ilikiomeni Square in Mandraki, fresh fish in Pali, meatballs on Nikia Square with its pebbled mosaic, a walk through the wonderful alleys in the village of Emporios with its picturesque houses, and – of course – a boat trip to the swimming spots of neighboring Gyali, the island of pumice stones. -Vlassis Kostouros

Blessed with somE of the best beaches – Livadi and Petra are two of them – and one of the most stunning island capital villages in Greece, Patmos caters to a sophisticated crowd. Due to the venerable presence of the Monastery of St John, the island has shunned the noisy night-life and madding crowds which have taken over elsewhere. Many affluent Europeans, charmed by the austere beauty of the old town surrounding the fort-like monastery, bought and restored old houses here. If you’re in the mood for a quiet vacation, this tiny island is just what you need. You won’t find nightlife or ancient sights, but you’ll swim off some of the most beautiful beaches in the Dodecanese . You’ll eat well, too; at Taverna Manola on Avlakia Beach, Giorgos and Maria serve amazing dishes using meat and vegetables from their own farm. Vathy Beach , a 30-minute walk through olive groves, has no restaurant but it does have generally calm waters. N.D. Don’t forget to buy salt and herbs. There’s no direct route. Local ferries cross from Kalymnos in 45 minutes.

Be generous with your time here. There are miles of gorgeous sandy beaches, but it’s the architecture that makes this island unique. The medieval Old Town – a legacy of the Knights Hospitaller – is among the largest Gothic settlements in the Mediterranean to have survived intact. A walk along the arched alleys after dusk proves that it hasn’t lost any of its magic. Italian rule (1912-1947) produced some delightful architectural extravaganzas: check out the buildings in Mandraki , the Kallithea Springs and the ruined mountain village of Eleousa (Campochiaro)! -Alexandros Massavetas

The Monastery of Panormitis , the delicious shrimp, the wild prickly pears and the rich local cuisine influenced by the travels of the island’s sponge divers: all this is Symi. In Gyalos, its impressive port, you’ll see colorful neoclassical buildings that compose one of the most beautiful settlements in the Aegean. Most beaches on the island are only accessible by sea so it makes sense to rent a small craft, take a water taxi or join an organized boat excursion to visit them. Be sure not to miss Aghios Georgios Dysalonas beach , with green waters and breathtaking, 300-meter-high cliffs. -John Papadimitriou

Peace and quiet: this is what you’ll find on Telendos, as there are no cars here. Any sense of commotion here only lasts as long as it takes for the small ferry from Kalymnos to load and unload passengers. Telendos, covering just five square kilometers , is ideal for hiking. It has a small port with a taverna, four or five beaches and ruins from early Christian times that lie, visible to snorkelers, at a shallow point on the seabed. The longest route you can walk is a 2km path that leads to the ruins of a Byzantine settlement, where you’ll also find a small church offering amazing views. The island also lends itself to alternative tourism in the form of rock-climbing, an activity that reveals a wholly different Telendos. -Olga Charami

Every year, more and more foreigners choose Tilos as their permanent residence. You can see the investment they’ve made as you spot the many restored houses in the capital, Megalo Horio , with its narrow alleys and cobbled square. These houses aren’t the island’s only imposing structures, however; on Tilos are the ruins of seven fortified settlements. At the Paleontological Museum , you can look even further back in time; there are bones of dwarf elephants that lived here tens of thousands of years ago. The island has an extensive network of hiking trails, but what it doesn’t have are any public garbage bins; a zero-waste program is being piloted here. -John Papadimitriou

Il Dodecaneso è un bellissimo complesso di isole situato nella parte sud-est del Mar Egeo, tra Samos , Creta e le coste turche. Le principali sono: Rodi , Karpathos , Astypalea , Patmos , Kos e isole più piccole come Tilos e Symi . Ognuna di queste isole regala a tutti i suoi visitatori oltre che paesaggi naturali e spiagge meravigliose, un ricco patrimonio culturale e artistico.

L'isola più popolare del Dodecaneso è Rodi , famosa per il suo bellissimo centro storico, le meravigliose spiagge e la natura rigogliosa. Molto popolare è anche Kos , mentre Karpathos e Patmos si stanno gradualmente sviluppando senza perdere il loro carattere originale. il resto del Dodecaneso è una "piccola isola bellissima", ideale per vacanze rilassanti.

Se vuoi sfuggire alla folla, salta su una barca (o su un aereo da Atene) per Leros dove troverai spiagge e castelli meravigliosi oppure per Kastellorizo , un'isola piccola, amichevole, a ritmo lento che è più vicina alla Turchia che alla Grecia.

Dodecaneso, una roccaforte veneziana

La storia delle isole del Dodecaneso inizia nella preistoria, ma raggiunge il picco nel Medioevo, quando le isole furono conquistate dai veneziani. I veneziani costruirono forti e castelli per difendere le città e svilupparono un'economia basata sulla navigazione commerciale. Resti di questo periodo veneziano sono i meravigliosi castelli, come il Palazzo del Gran Maestro a Rodi, il Castello Neratzia nella città di Kos, il Castello Pandeli a Leros e altri. Generalmente, ogni isola del Dodecaneso ha almeno un castello veneziano. Nel XV secolo, il Dodecaneso fu conquistato dagli Ottomani, che lasciarono il segno anche sull'architettura locale. Dopo un breve dominio italiano dal 1912 al 1947, le isole del Dodecaneso furono finalmente annesse allo stato greco dopo il trattato di pace del 1947 con l'Italia.

Come spostarsi? Meglio noleggiare un mezzo

Gli autobus sono il modo più economico per girare le isole. Ci sono anche autobus KTEL (suburbani) che vanno da Rodi città a quasi tutti i villaggi e le spiagge intorno all'isola, in particolare verso i luoghi più turistici, come Lindos, Faliraki, Afandou, Archangelos.

I taxi sono solitamente utilizzati come mezzo di trasporto veloce anche se solitamente sono evitati per il loro costo elevato.

Noleggio auto e moto Il modo più semplice per esplorare è sicuramente con un mezzo privato. Ci sono molti noleggi di auto in tutto l'arcipelago, in particolare a Rodi e altri luoghi turistici.

Traghetti  Dal momento che le isole del Dodecaneso sono molto vicine tra di loro e hanno un buon collegamento via mare, molte escursioni di un giorno possono essere organizzate da un'isola all'altra. Lo stesso vale per le coste Turche: le isole greche di Rodi e Kos hanno collegamenti marittimi giornalieri in estate. I traghetti da Rodi arrivano a Marmaris in Turchia e i traghetti da Kos vanno a Bodrum.

Spiagge tranquille e piccole baie nascoste

Le più famose spiagge del Dodecaneso si trovano a Rodi e Kos , mentre le altre isole del Dodecaneso sono famose per la loro atmosfera rilassante e le spiagge appartate . A Rodi e Kos, puoi trovare spiagge molto ben organizzate con tutte le strutture turistiche: alloggio, ristorante, bar sulla spiaggia e centri di sport acquatici. Anche Faliraki, Ixia, Ialyssos e Kallithea a Rodi sono molto organizzate, così come Kefalos e Kardamena a Kos. Dato pero' che queste isole sono di grandi dimensioni, ci sono anche molte piccole baie e tranquilli luoghi sabbiosi. Il resto del Dodecaneso non è così frequentato in estate, quindi l'atmosfera è più rilassante. trovi spiagge organizzate, ma le strutture turistiche non sono così tante come a Rodi e Kos. Anche i centri di sport acquatici sono meno o addirittura inesistenti nel resto del Dodecaneso.

Ville, hotel di lusso, resort e appartamenti economici nel Dodecaneso

Le tipologie di alloggio in Dodecaneso sono varie . Rodi e Kos sono le due isole più grandi e popolari, pertanto, gli hotel vanno da ville di lusso private e Resort 5 stelle ad appartamenti per famiglie sulla spiaggia. Il resto delle isole non è così sviluppato e mantiene un profilo più basso. Gli hotel del Dodecaneso in isole come Karpathos, Patmos, Leros e Kalymnos sono per lo più hotel a 2-3 stelle, studios economici e appartamenti familiari. Anche le isole più piccole, come Tilos, Nisyros e Halki, hanno solo monolocali e appartamenti. 

Il modo più veloce per arrivare in Dodecaneso: aereo e traghetto

In aereo:   ci sono aeroporti in molte isole del Dodecaneso . Gli aeroporti di Rodi, Kos e Karpathos ricevono voli interni da Atene e in estate anche voli charter dall'estero. Gli aeroporti di Leros e Kalymnos solo voli nazionali da Atene.

Traghetto:   le isole del Dodecaneso sono serviti da traghetti regolari dal porto del Pireo, ma il viaggio è piuttosto lungo . Ci sono anche traghetti giornalieri tra Rodi, Kos e tutte le isole del Dodecaneso. Karpathos e Kasos, che si trovano sul lato meridionale del Dodecaneso, sono collegate anche ad Agios Nikolaos e Sitia (Creta) in estate. Ci sono anche traghetti per la Turchia in estate. Quelli dalla città di Kos vanno a Bodrum in Turchia, mentre i traghetti da Rodi portano a Marmaris in Turchia.

Dove andare nel Dodecaneso: Rodi, la perla del Mar Egeo

Nel Dodecaneso trovi tanti piccoli e pittoreschi villaggi nascosti dietro le montagne o in bella vista sulle verdi vallate delle isole. Sicuramente è Rodi l'isola più importante e visitata, attorno alla quale ruotano tante altre piccole e belle perle. Isole come Patmos, Kos o Lipsi, oppure la coloratissima Symi, conservano ognuna caratteristiche uniche che le rendono diverse una dall'altra.

Rodi è un tesoro medievale splendidamente conservato nel corso dei secoli . Passeggia attorno alla sua magnifica città vecchia circondata da mura medievali con sette porte e ammira il Palazzo del Gran Maestro, l'edificio più imponente di tutta l'isola.

Nelle altre isole, i villaggi si distinguono anche per la loro ricchezza storica e naturale. Olympos a Karpathos, la Chora di Patmos e di Astypalea, Zia a Kos, Chorio a Simi e Nikia a Nisyros sono solo alcuni dei più pittoreschi villaggi del Dodecaneso.

The island complex of Dodecanese in south-eastern Aegean is the sunniest corner in Greece. Twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones with crystal clear waters, sandy or pebbly beaches, important archaeological finds, imposing Byzantine and medieval monuments and unique traditional settlements are waiting to be discovered.

The westernmost island of the Dodecanese Group, Astypalaia, boasts a centuries-old history, whitewashed villages, deep blue sea waters and sun-drenched beaches. The island, seen from above, has two distinct sections joined by a narrow stretch of land less than 100 m. wide. The western part is known as Mesa Nisi [the inner island] and the eastern part as Exo Nisi [the outer island]. Chora is the island’s capital town and port. It is one of the most picturesque towns in the Aegean, perched on a rock that advances into the sea, forming two bays. On the top, you will see Chora’s castle towering over the town with the strikingly white domes of Evangelistria and Agios Georgios churches, visible over the walls. Around the castle lie Chora’s houses with whitewashed walls, blue doors and windows, and wooden balcony rails.

West of popular Rhodes Island lies a chain of islets, the biggest of them being Chalki. This is a place we’d like to recommend to you if you’re looking for a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday in typical Aegean Sea island surroundings. Chalki is an island with a low profile and an ancient history. It’s been inhabited since the prehistoric times and it got its name from the copper mines (Chalkos is Greek for copper) that were in use on the island in antiquity. The buildings bear the signs of prosperity the island knew during the second half of the 19th c., as trade growth and the sponge harvesting business brought wealth to the locals. After 1912, the Italians possessed the Dodecanese group of islands (Chalki included) until 1948 when they became part of the Greek State.

Welcome to Kalymnos, the world renowned island of traditional sponge harvesting. Following WW2 this was the only Greek sponge trade business that survived and thrived. The island’s particular landscape makes it a favourable destination for alternative tourism: climb giant vertical rocks; explore centuries - old ship wrecks that lie in the sea-bed; discover enchanting caves; and visit wonderful beaches and picturesque island villages. Kastellorizo

On the easternmost side of Greece you’ll come across Kastellorizo, one of the smallest yet prettiest islands of the Dodecanese complex. Also known as Megisti during antiquity, the island has a long history starting in the early Neolithic era. Its ancient name lasted until the Middle Ages, when the knights of St John built Castello Rosso on the reddish rock above the port. The name of the island was given because of the castle with the high double walls and battlements. Its economic growth started by the end of the 19th century thanks to fishing and shipping. The beautiful stately houses along the Kordoniou coast are reminiscent of those prosperous days. Leipsoi is a chain of small islands, islets, and rocks, which dot the Southeastern Aegean and form the northern part of the Dodecanese group of islands. Leipso or Leipsoi is the name of the largest island in the Leipsoi chain, and it’s located between the bigger Patmos and Leros Islands. It’s a lesser-known destination that we absolutely recommend to you for your next summer holiday trip, especially if you prefer relaxing in a place of pristine nature, away from the crowds of other popular destinations.   Greek mythology has it that during his return trip to Ithaca, Odysseus was shipwrecked here on Nymph Calypso’s island, who refused to let him go for seven years! The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times, yet today only one village exists, built by Ilias, a Cretan guy who arrived there in the second half of the 17th c. and settled on the hill slope where present day Chora is situated. The town expanded across the slope all the way down to the island’s natural harbour.

Welcome to the island of Artemis,  the goddess of wild animals, vegetation, and the hunt. This fertile land of green low hills & plains was her favourite island, and she was much revered by the locals, who built her temple in the Partheni area, in the north. Today, the local agricultural produce includes olives (+oil), citrus, figs, other fruit and vegetables. Lakki is such a case; the town was named Porto Lago by the Italians who built it about a hundred years ago, during the thirty-year long Italian Rule on the Dodecanese Islands (1912 – 1943). Lakki possesses the deepest natural harbour in the entire Mediterranean Basin! Nisyros is one of the most beautiful and lesser known Aegean islands, part of the Dodecanese island group, next to Kos and Tilos. The island’s obsidian trade is what made its economy thrive in antiquity. The jem was extracted by locals from the nearby Gyali Island where a pumice mining factory is still in operation today. According to Greek mythology, Nisyros was created during the war between Gods and Giants. Poseidon chased the Giant Polyvotis down to Kos, cut a part of it and threw it to his enemy, sinking him forever in the bottom of the Aegean Sea. The legendary rock referred to in the Myth is supposed to be the island of Nisyros. It is said that when the volcano used to erupt it was the defeated Giant’s angry breath. Nisyros volcano is the youngest one in Greece. The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is home to a large number of cultural monuments. It truly is ideal for anyone searching for an off the beaten track destination offering natural and cultural sights to explore.

Patmos Island is globally known for its religious legacy, as it is the place where John the Evangelist (aka John the Theologian) wrote the Book of Revelation. Over the recent years, it has also become a destination preferred by nature lovers and other holidaymakers who seek to experience this location’s spiritual atmosphere in a setting of beautiful land & seascapes. Patmos’ uneven landscape includes a sinuous shoreline, steep-faced hills, and a volcanic terrain, and it has known a modest tourism growth, attracting visitors who wish to explore its rugged countryside. Rhodes has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong mediaeval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. It is also an island with great natural beauty: the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides; the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns; and  the archaeological sites, the mediaeval monuments and the cosmopolitan resorts arranged in the traditional style all conspire to make the popularity of this destination so hard to resist, even to a demanding traveller. This Mediterranean gem of an island boasts a centuries-old history: a turbulent past full of unexpected turns and twists of fate. It flourished during the 4th c. BC; this is when the famous Colossus of Rhodes, a gigantic statue sculpted by Charis from Lindos, Rhodes, who was a student of Lysippos, a master sculptor at the time. The history of this island is a rich one, as each conqueror left their strong mark on it. While approaching the port of Symi, one has the overwhelming feeling of entering a perfectly painted image of a scenic traditional village. As a rule, people remain agape and cannot take their eyes off the spectacular sight. A galore of two and three-storey traditional stone houses, painted in all colours but mostly in indigo, ochre and terracotta, with red tiled roofs and cute little balconies with railings set up the peculiarity of the island. The few who can resist the superb spectacle of the town of Symi stretching its impeccable architecture – all of the buildings there have been listed - on the slopes of the surrounding hills, take off their eyes to look at their book guides. They see the picture of the port of Symi printed on their books. They know it might have been photoshopped; in all likelihood, they expected it to be better than the real thing. Still, when they lift their eyes again to marvel at the breathtaking sight, they realise it belies their expectations: Symi is more than words or photos can say!

Tilos is one of the small Dodecanese Islands, located between Rhodes and Kos. The landscape includes high mountains, fertile seaside plains, steep rocky shores as well as long sandy beaches. Tilos Island provides habitat for rare bird species such as the Bonelli’s eagle, the Eleonora’s falcon, the long-legged buzzard, the European shag, the European bee-eater, herons, etc, and it has some four hundred types of flowers and herbs. It is the first green island, energy-wise, and a large nature reserve protected by international treaties. The last elephants of Europe lived here: the dwarf elephants appeared on the island 45,000 years ago and disappeared about 4,000 years ago. In antiquity, Tilos was popular for its herbs, and it prospered during the Classical period, which was also the time when Irinna, a famous ancient Greek female poet lived. It is today a quiet island of picturesque villages and amazing beaches where you can have a relaxing holiday. It is a destination where the notion of sustainability is put to practice.

L’ arcipelago del Dodecaneso è un complesso di isole, 12 grandi e circa 200 piccole e piccolissime, nella parte meridionale del Mar Egeo, tra le coste della Turchia a oriente e le isole Cicladi a occidente.

Le isole del  Dodecaneso non hanno una loro unitarietà geografica ma sono caratterizzate da acque cristalline, spiagge sabbiose o ghiaiose, importanti reperti archeologici, monumenti bizantini e l’architettura medievale dovuta alla lunga dominazione veneziana. Ciò che le accomuna queste isole è la loro storia e le loro occupazioni: da quella dei cavalieri crociati a quella dei turchi, dall’occupazione italiana all’annessione greca.

Ogni isola vanta un proprio fascino , paesaggi incantevoli e un mare limpido, una natura incontaminata e tradizioni importanti. Le meno note e incontaminate sono Leros o Pserimos mentre Rodi e Kos , le isole più grandi e più cosmopolite, sono meta di vacanzieri durante tutto l’anno.

Anche Karpathos si sta affermando turisticamente mentre Kalymnos è meta del turismo di nicchia degli amanti delle arrampicate su roccia. Tilos ha un enorme parco ecologico protetto da trattati internazionali,  Patmos è molto popolare tra i pellegrini dal momento che in una delle grotte dell’isola Giovanni il Teologo, uno dei discepoli di Cristo, scrisse il Libro delle Rivelazioni  e  Astypalea è l’isola più occidentale del’arcipelago e ha caratteristiche architettoniche sia delle Cicladi che del Dodecaneso.

L’arcipelago del Dodecaneso è formato da 12 isole maggiori , e circa 200 isolette più piccole , tutte situate nella parte meridionale del Mar Egeo, tra la Turchia e l’Arcipelago delle Cicladi .

In generale, le Isole del Dodecaneso sono meno turistiche rispetto alle vicine Cicladi , e alle Isole Ionie . Dopo aver visto sulla mappa dove si trovano le isole del Dodecaneso, scopriamo insieme quali sono le 12 principali isole da visitare. L’arcipelago è composto da dodici isole principali: Astypalea, Agathonisi, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastellorizo, Kalymnos, Kos, Leros, Patmos, Rodi, Tilos, Samos, e Simi.

Ogni isola tra quelle maggiori ha una propria particolarità, ma tutte sono accomunate da mare cristallino, paesaggi incantevoli e tantissima storia antica. Tra tutte, le isole meno conosciute e raggiunte dal turismo sono Leros e Kalymnos . Al contrario, Rodi e Kos sono le più grandi ma anche le più famose, e diventano ogni anno meta di migliaia di turisti.

Ma ora vediamo nel dettaglio cosa vedere alle Isole del Dodecaneso , isola per isola, con riferimento alla nostra mappa!

1. Astypalea

Astypalea, o Astipalea, vi accoglierà con il classico ambiente delle isole Greche a cui siamo abituati. Tranquillità, natura selvaggia, spiagge in ogni angolo e acque cristalline, e piccoli borghi con tradizionali case bianche e mulini a vento . La sua forma ricorda quella di una H, o di una farfalla, ed è meta di un turismo di nicchia , soprattutto locale. Non è facilissima da raggiungere, data la sua posizione remota, e ci sono pochi collegamenti marittimi con le altre isole e con la terraferma.

Inoltre, l’isola ha poche strade , quasi tutte in salita. Per questo motivo, se sceglierete Astypalea come meta delle vostre prossime vacanze, vi consigliamo di affittare un’auto 4×4 oppure fare splendide gite in barca verso le spiagge più belle.

2. Agathonisi

Agathonisi è la più settentrionale delle isole del Dodecanneso, e si trova a sud di Samos. Si tratta di una delle più piccole isole abitate, ed è poco nota ai turisti. Si tratta di un luogo ideale in cui fare un’escursione di un giorno , o di un paio di giorni, partendo dalla vicina Samos . Infatti, dalla vicina isola, potrete prendere un traghetto che parte 4 volte a settimana.

Le coste dell’isola sono molto frastagliate, e ricche di piccole spiagge di sabbia o di rocce. Tra le spiagge da visitare vi consigliamo Spilia , Tsaggari , Poros , e Katholiko . Inoltre, se siete appassionati di immersioni, quest’isola è la vostra meta ideale. Di fronte alle spiaggette, infatti, troverete innumerevoli isolotti rocciosi, con fondali spettacolari.

3. Karpathos

Karpathos è situata tra Rodi e Creta , ed è la meta ideale per chi ama il mare e il relax. Infatti, le sue spiagge attirano ogni anno migliaia di turisti, e appassionati di sport acquatici. In particolare, le sue acque sono molto amate dai surfisti , in quanto l’isola è molto ventilata grazie al meltemi, il vento che soffia da nord. Qui troverete alcune delle spiagge migliori per fare surf e altri sport acquatici.

Inoltre, le sue grandi spiagge attrezzate sono ideali per famiglie con bambini , o per chi cerca una vacanza all’insegna del relax e della comodità.

4. Kastellorizo

L’isola di Kastellorizo, o Megisti, è la più remota delle isole del Dodecaneso e della Grecia. Infatti, si trova a soli 2 km dalle coste turche, e a 116 km da Rodi. Pur essendo abitata, l’isola è molto piccola, e si estende per soli 9 chilometri quadrati.

Malgrado le sue dimensioni ridotte, però, è un’isola che ha molto da offrire ai suoi visitatori, soprattutto a chi ama la vita di mare e lo snorkeling . Infatti, i suoi fondali rocciosi, sono meravigliosi da scoprire. Per chi, invece, preferisce osservare le coste, sono disponibili diverse gite in barca nelle acque cristalline che bagnano le l’isolotto.

5. Kalymnos

Una delle più atipiche isole del Dodecaneso, Kalymnos, nota anche come Calino o Calimno, è formata principalmente da montagne e rocce a picco sul mare blu. Questo la rende una meta ideale per gli amanti dei trekking e dell’ arrampicata . Sull’isola troverete poche spiagge di sabbia, in quanto le sue coste sono prevalentemente rocciose.

Proprio per la sua conformazione geologica, l’economia dell’isola per molti anni si è basata sulla pesca delle spugne , una rischiosa attività che ha forgiato l’identità e le tradizioni dell’isola. Oggi le spugne sono più che altro un souvenir per i turisti, ma questa tradizione è rimasta fortemente radicata nella cultura locale.

Insieme a Rodi, Kos è une delle isole più note e visitate del Dodecaneso. Pur essendo ogni anno meta di migliaia di turisti, però, l’isola ha mantenuto il suo retaggio culturale e le sue tradizioni. Grazie alla sua vicinanza con la Turchia, è possibile andare al mare a Kos quasi tutto l’anno , per questo è così nota tra i vacanzieri di tutto il mondo.

Ma oltre alle bellissime spiagge, l’isola di Kos è famosa anche per la sua storia millenaria . Quindi, se volete prendervi una pausa dalla tintarella, vi consigliamo di visitare le rovine antiche che troverete su tutta l’isola.

Leros è la destinazione perfetta se siete alla ricerca di relax al mare, spiagge comode da raggiungere e se amate i tipici borghi greci . Infatti, la sua città principale, Agia Marina, ha le tipiche case bianche della Grecia, oltre a edifici neoclassici, stretti vicoli e una collina, che ospita dei resti di un castello bizantino ottimamente conservati.

Consigliamo una vacanza a Leros se siete alla ricerca di un po’ di relax al mare , lontani dalle orde di turisti che affollano normalmente in estate le isole Greche.

Patmos, o Patmo, è una delle isole più particolari del Dodecaneso. Conosciuta anche come “la Gerusalemme dell’Egeo”, in quanto meta di numerosi pellegrinaggi dei luoghi sacri che accolsero i passi dell’evangelista Giovanni, resta una delle isole greche più tradizionali e genuine. Sull’isola vi consigliamo sicuramente di visitare la sua Chora e il porto principale, Skala .

Le spiagge di Patmos sono quasi tutte attrezzate, con noleggio lettini e ombrelloni, e ricche di chioschi e ristorantini sul lungomare.

L’isola di Rodi non ha sicuramente bisogno di presentazioni. Una delle prime isole greche a ospitare migliaia di turisti di tutto il mondo, a livello geografico si trova quasi più in Turchia che in Grecia. Ma l’isola è orgogliosamente greca, per le sue tradizioni e per la sua storia.

Rodi è una delle isole più grandi del Dodecaneso, ed è anche quella dalla storia più lunga e sofferta. Quando vi troverete sull’isola, vi consigliamo di alternare le vostre giornate di mare, con visite culturali alla scoperta delle meraviglie storiche dell’isola. Ad esempio, il sito archeologico di Kamiros , la città vecchia di Rodi , e la bellissima cittadina di Lindos .

L’isola di Tilos non è altro che un piccolo isolotto, che si trova vicino a Rodi e a sud di Nissiros e Kos. Abbiamo inserito questa isola nella mappa delle isole da vedere nel Dodecaneso in quanto è famosa tra gli appassionati di paleontologia e preistoria . Infatti, in una delle sue numerose grotte, sono stati trovati i resti di un elefante preistorico dalle dimensioni molto ridotte che è vissuto sull’isola da 45 mila anni fa fino a 4 mila anni fa.

Oltre alle stupende spiagge e alle acque cristalline , quindi, potrete scoprire un po’ di storia antica durante la vostra vacanza a Tilos.

Samos è separata dalla Turchia solo dallo stretto di Mikali. L’isola è famosa in quanto luogo di nascita del matematico Pitagora e del filosofo Epicuro , oltre a essere conosciuta per la produzione del vino dolce Moscato .

Il panorama che troverete è quello di un’isola selvaggia , ricca di boschi e di verde, con spiagge libere e non attrezzate. Le spiagge sono principalmente di sassi e sabbia fine, con acque cristalline e tiepide.

Simi, chiamata anche Symi, si trova nella parte meridionale del Dodecaneso, vicino a Rodi e a 5 chilometri dalla Turchia. I turisti amano quest’isola soprattutto per le sue spiagge . Tra le più belle, vi segnaliamo Yialos, Ped Studio, Emborios, Marathounda, Nanou, Agia Marina e Nimos.

Inoltre, a Samos potrete ammirare il Santuario dedicato ad Hera , la moglie di Zeus. Infine, a Kos potrete visitare il Tempio dedicato al culto di Asclepio e ammirare il platano dove Ippocrate insegnava i principi della medicina moderna ai suoi allievi.

Se avete prenotato la vostra vacanza nel Dodecaneso per godervi il mare, allora dovrete assolutamente provare l’esperienza di una vacanze in barca ! Scegliete il Dodecaneso e non ve ne pentirete! Il Dodecaneso divenne italiano durante la guerra italo-turca nel 1912.

Le linee principali che operano nel Dodecaneso sono DODEKANISOS SEAWAYS, che collega Rodi – Kos – Leros – Patmos – Lipsi – Kalymnos – Symi – Panormitis – Kastelorizo, e ANEK KALYMNOY che collega Kalymnos – Astipalea – Lipsi – Pithagoreio – Leros – Parmos.

La maggior parte delle Isole del Dodecaneso non ha un aeroporto. Le due isole dodate di aeroporto che ospita voli internazionali sono Kos e Rodi. Potrete quindi arrivare alle isole più piccole tramite i collegamenti interni in traghetto o aliscafo .

Le isole più famose sono Rodi e Kos, ma ogni isola ha la sua particolarità. Sicuramente vi consigliamo di organizzare escursionin all’aria aperta e sport acquatici, come snorkeling e immersioni.

Da Istanbul potrete raggiungere facilmente l’isola di Kos in aereo e traghetto. Vi consigliamo di prendere un aereo per Bodrum e poi traghetto per Kos.

L’arcipelago si chiama Dodecaneso, in greco Dodekánisa, in quanto dodici isole sono quelle abitate.

Le meno note e incontaminate sono Leros o Pserimos.

Molto difficile selezionare le più belle. Le più amate sono sicuramente Kos e Rodi.

Sergiev Posad tour

Right after the sightseeing in Moscow Sergiev Posad tour is the most popular place to go during a Moscow visit. The cultural wealth of Russia is formed not only by the grandeur of monumental, architectural and artistic heritage of big cities, but also by unique historical sites and attractions of small towns and villages. For those who feel like breaking away from the rapid and noisy life of Moscow Sergiev Posad tour gives the opportunity to visit the scenic Moscow localities.

For hundreds years this place was a popular pilgrimage site for Russian people. The Trinity-Sergius monastery, which is in the center of the town, started out as a remote settlement in a dense forest when it was founded in the 14th century by St. Sergius.

Sergius was an hermit. Miraculously he was not eaten by wild beasts when he was living all alone in the forest: a clear sign that he was blessed. Sergius did not plan to become a Father Superior of a populous monastery, but so it happened. Now there are several hundred monks there. During the Sergiev Posad tour the guide will regale you with stories regarding his outstanding personality. St. Sergius monastery is not only an important religious site, it is an outstanding architectural ensemble. The guide will give you some perspective about the buildings and will show you around inside them. During the Sergiev Posad tour you will get introduced to monks' life and Russian Orthodox traditions.

This town is also a place where the first Matryoshka, the classic Russian nesting doll, was made in the beginning of the 1900s. A visit to the Toy Museum can be included in the Sergiev Posad tour on request. The way from Moscow to Sergiev Posad takes 1,5 – 2 hours driving or 1 h 15 min by train from the Yaroslavsky railway station which is especially convenient for those who are staying at the Hilton Leningradskaya Hotel. In any case the guide will meet you at your hotel. On arrival from Moscow Sergiev Posad tour lasts about 3 hours including some time for lunch.

The monastery gave its name to the surrounding town – Sergiev Posad.

The town is 1,5 - 2 hours driving from Moscow. Your private guide and the driver will pick you up from the hotel and will drop back. It is also possible to reach Sergiev Posad from Moscow by train, which is cheaper and sometimes faster.
