The hot summer season runs from March through June when temperatures soar into the high 90's with high humidity, and the hottest months are April and May. In Phuket, the weather is hot and humid year-round, with the hottest months being March through May. November and April are the most popular times to visit the island with a high number of travelers seeking tropical temperatures. The country is prone to monsoons from July to October with the heaviest rainfall taking place from August to September when flash flooding is most common. The cooler winter months are from November to February which is the most pleasant time of year to visit the country. During these months temperatures hover in the mid-`80s during the day and low 70`s at night with less frequent rain. December and January are very popular times to visit Thailand with numerous holiday festivities. People flock to this area and airline tickets and hotel prices are at their highest. The Thai Baht is the currency used in Thailand and you will need to exchange your dollars to Baht. Try to avoid major banks and popular tourist areas as you tend to get the worst exchange rates. Super Rich is the most famous money exchange company in Bangkok with several branches across the city; you must have your passport with you to exchange money in Bangkok. Tipping is not a common practice in Thailand and is not customary. There is no requirement to tip but small gratuities for great service are appreciated, and most restaurants and hotels will include a 10% service charge on your bill. More information about Thailand
A vacation to Thailand is one of the most popular travel experiences in Southeast Asia . The country continues to attract the public thanks to its fantastic mix of spectacular beaches, temples, delicious cuisine, a variety of activities and its cheerful locals. Located in the center of Southeast Asia , on the Indochina Peninsula , the Kingdom of Thailand is a dazzling treasure of the East. Its shares a border on to the east with Laos , on the southeast with Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand , on the south with Malaysia and on the west with Myanmar and the Andaman Sea.
Its 69 million inhabitants are distributed along 1770 kilometers from north to south and 805 kilometers from east to west in 76 provinces , which have the same name as their corresponding capital cities. Bangkok is the most populated and has the highest population density. On a tour of Thailand , you will be amazed by the kindness of its inhabitants; it has even been granted the nickname of ‘ The Land of Smiles’.
The most mountainous area can be found close to the border with Myanmar and the highest peak is the Doi Inthanon at 2595 meters and is located to the north, in the province of Chiang Mai. Its two main river systems are the Chao Phraya, which provides drainage for 35% of the country and runs through the heart of Bangkok and the Mekong River , which serves as a natural border with Myanmar and Laos in the famous Golden Triangle.
Thailand enjoys a humid tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius. The monsoon season runs from June to October , and the coolest months are from November to February. The remainder of the year is delightfully warm.
Nature in Thailand
Thailand has a varied landscape, ranging from woodland to tropical mangroves, in the form of forests and jungles, which covers 25% of the country and which together with the plateau, exhibits exuberant specimens of mangroves, Indian reeds, ebony, teak, oak , pines, bamboos, palms, ratans, lianas, fruit trees such as coconuts, mangoes and bananas and up to 27,000 species of plants and flowers such as fistula, orchids , hibiscus or gardenias.
The more than 100 national parks have a fundamental role in the protection of the 313 species of reptiles , 107 of amphibians , 900 of birds and 300 species of mammals that can be found in the country, such as elephants, tigers, monkeys, leopards, wild oxen, buffalos, tapirs, snakes and crocodiles. Thailand also has exceptionally rich marine life including reef fish, sea cow, crossbow fish, whale shark, and giant spider crabs, ensuring scuba diving is one of the most common activities for visitors on a trip to Thailand.
Economy in Thailand
The Thai economy is supported by agriculture, rice cultivation, duck, pig, ox and cow farming and fishing in the Andaman Sea , Gulf of Thailand and the Mekong River . Being one of the ten most visited countries in the world, tourism represents one of the main sources of income and has produced many job opportunities for its inhabitants.
It is a very well connected country and has a large transport network, so it is an easy country in which to enjoy a tour. It has 25 airports and many international airlines land in Bangkok , one of the most important airports in Asia. It has an extensive network of roads that move buses, minivans, cars, and motorcycles; the railways connect the most important cities of the country; A large number of private ferry companies connect the many islands and the best options to get around the capital's streets are the subway, the metro, the taxi or on a traditional tuk-tuk.
Religion in Thailand
75% of Thailand’s inhabitants belong to the Que Tai and Lao ethnic groups, the vast Chinese community represents about 15% of the population and the remainder of the country’s inhabitants are either Malays, Mon, Khmer and indigenous tribes from the highlands.
95% of the population follows the Buddhist Theravada school of belief, 4% are Muslim and the remaining 1% identify as either Hindu, Christian, Confucian or Taoist. Thai men usually enter temporarily into a monastery for about three months after finishing their university studies. In the time they are there, they are novice monks and they can decide freely when to leave it. The reason why they do this is to cleanse their mind, earn merit and honor their parents.
History of Thailand
A package holiday to Thailand will undoubtedly bring you face-to-face with the living monuments of the country’s vast history. The oldest archaeological site in Thailand dates from 3600 BC but the founding of the nation was established in 1238 with the Kingdom of Sukhothai until 1365 when it was replaced by the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. After the fall of this kingdom in 1767, at the hands of the Burmese when the capital was devastated and burned, it was moved to Thonburi under the mandate of King Taksin the Great. In 1782 the reign of Siam passed to the Chakri dynasty with Rama I, who declared Bangkok the new capital.
The absolute monarchy of Rama VII became constitutional as a result of the coup d'état of 1932 . During the Second World War , Thailand was allied with Japan , but during the final stages of the war, it unified with the United States . In 1946 Rama IX came to the throne and in 1949 , Siam changed its name to Thailand . After 17 violent attempts to seize political power and years of political instability, in 2014 the army staged a new coup d'etat. In 2016 the beloved king died, putting an end to the most enduring reign in the world. After seven decades of rule, the king was succeeded by his son Rama who found himself under a military dictatorship. Despite the attempts, it is the only Southeast Asian country that has never been colonized by a European power.
Culture and Traditions in Thailand
The Thais have had a centuries-long special relationship with elephants , or ‘chang’ , as they call them. These immense and beautiful creatures have been a fundamental part of the culture and appeared on the national flag until 1917 . Throughout history, these noble animals have been domesticated and have assisted in the construction, transport, and warfare. The importance and admiration for them are also reflected in Buddhist and Hindu beliefs and mythological legends giving them a mystical power and making them bearers of good luck. They are a true symbol for the country.
It is true that elephants in Thailand have also been the object of abuse, ill-treatment, and illegal trade, but fortunately, there are institutions that ethically rescue, care for, treat and feed them.
The picturesque floating markets are another of the Thai traditions and an essential visit on a holiday to Thailand . A universe of canals, canoes, and houses on stilts, these floating markets are a unique insight into the daily lives of the locals as they buy and sell fruits, vegetables, crafts, and freshly cooked dishes.
Thai boxing or ‘Muay Thai’ is a popular martial art and is considered a national sport. In the Kingdom of Sukhothai , it was part of the military training of the soldiers.
Thai massages are another hallmark of the country and follow an ancient philosophy. The technique was created 2,500 years ago by Dr. Shivago , Buddha's physician, in which he combined different Asian techniques, Ayurvedic principles, and yoga postures . You cannot fully experience a tour of Thailand without enjoying one of these wonderful massages. The technique consists of strong pressure and stretches in which the therapist uses their hands, fists, elbows, knees, feet, arms and legs in order for the recipient to achieve physical, mental and emotional balance . There are countless massage parlors throughout the country and the prices are very cheap.
Embarking on a comprehensive tour of Thailand takes visitors through a fascinating and varied territory with a vast history to discover a country that will surprise you with its unique landscapes and variety of traditions. The country is a heavyweight in tourism and it is well deserved. Everyone wants to go and discover the country for themselves and whoever has visited always wants to return to explore further.
Why is Thailand the most popular destination in Asia?
The answer is simple; because it has everything; a rich historical heritage, the fruit of the kingdoms of Siam and Lanna; ancestral traditions and rigorous customs; a sublime artistic legacy that is reflected in the delicacy and beauty of its temples; captivating cities, well connected to each other; a bustling capital city; a dreamlike landscape that stretches from the lush mountain forests of the north to the idyllic islands of the south with magnificent beaches of fine sand and warm crystalline waters; national parks and nature reserves full of exotic wildlife, frantic cities and quiet rural areas, a delicious aromatic cuisine, a warm climate, accommodations of all kinds and for all budgets, virgin landscapes in which to practice sports such as hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, cycling, sailing or rafting, a lively nightlife and a mystical and spiritual environment; numerous modern shopping centers and street markets, an infrastructure prepared for tourism and affordable prices; and the most important thing, kind and friendly locals who always greet visitors with an unbreakable smile, infecting you with their infinite joy and their caring, tolerant and educated attitude, perhaps the fruit of Buddhist teachings. Hence the Thai proverb, ‘do good and receive good, do evil and receive evil’.
A holiday to Thailand means entering into the deepest and warmest of Asian traditions. Its millenarian culture is a reference point and attracts, like a magnet, the western tourist who seeks traveler enrichment and open-mindedness. The capital, Bangkok , is a bustling and extensive city, with a cultural treasure that deserves to be given time before leaving for one of the more than one hundred tropical islands that are distributed between the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea , always a highlight in all-inclusive trips to Thailand . On these islands, you can find young people in search of nightlife and also those who seek silence or solely the whisper of the waves. And for the most restless, the north of the country offers all the possibilities and the mystery of the jungle in the Golden Triangle of Thailand.
Thailand is a land of freedom. When you step foot in the country it seduces you with what you see, hear, taste, smell and feel. That's why traveling to Thailand means immersing yourself in an unbeatable cocktail of floating markets and tuk-tuks, pad thai and tropical fruits, waterfalls and lakes, skyscrapers and houseboats, lanterns illuminating the night sky, sun and rain, sea and mountains, monks with saffron robes and Buddhist rituals, rivers and forests, flowers and offerings, caves and coral reefs, golden Buddhas and temples with pointed roofs.Thai’s are experts at making floral arrangements that they exhibit as ornamentation in their sacred places. Mythical Thailand is like a flower; delicate, colorful, aromatic, beautiful, wild, romantic and natural. Do not hesitate to explore; a magical trip awaits you.

The Deevana Patong Resort and Spa offers family rooms and suites, a children's pool, and childcare options for an extra charge. It's about ten minutes' walk to Bangla Road, Patong Beach, and Jungceylon Shopping Center. Local shuttle services are free of charge, and there's an airport shuttle from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for a fee.
For romantic vacations in Phuket:
The Ayara Hilltops Boutique Resort and Spa has ocean views and top-rated spa, dining, and room choices. The airport shuttle is included with many bookings.
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas is on Mai Khao Beach and just over 10 miles from Phuket International Aiport. It has villas with private pools, as well as a beachfront infinity pool.

Jim Thompson House
Located in Bangkok, the Jim Thompson House is the former home of James Thompson, an American businessman and architect. He dedicated his life to the revival of Thai silk and designed the house in 1958, with six traditional Thai-styled houses to showcase his large art collection of Thai paintings and historical Buddhist statues.
Wat Doi Suthep
Perched at the top of Doi Suthep mountain at an elevation of 3,520 feet, Wat Doi Suthep is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Thailand. We’ll take you up the 309 steps to find glittering shrines and statues, the holy gold plated chedi, and a sweeping view over the city of Chiang Mai.

What to pack for Thailand
Adaptor plug
In Thailand the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A, B, C, F and O. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Reef-safe sunscreen & insect repellent
Protect yourself from the harsh Thai sun with SPF 30 or higher and protect the coral reefs with reef-safe sunscreen. You’ll also need to pack plenty of DEET insect repellent.
In Thai culture, it’s required to remove your shoes before entering houses, temples and some shops and restaurants. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.
With plenty of islands ringed with golden shorelines and turquoise waters, you’ll definitely need a swimsuit for snorkelling, diving and blissful beach days in Thailand.
Thai phrasebook
The Thai language is unique to the country, and you’ll gain plenty of smiles and appreciation from the locals if you attempt to learn a few phrases.
Pack for sustainable travel
Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Top things to do
Food tour in bangkok.
Bangkok has a range of exciting things for you to experience. A food tour is the best way to take a deep dive into the local culture. Don’t look at the menu or decor. Look at the number of people then you will know you choose the right one. Tom Yum Gung - the Thai masterpiece soup, Gang Keow Wan - the famous Thai green curry, Pad Thai - the national dish of Thailand, and the grilled pork skewers Kao Niew Moo Yang are some authentic Thai food that many are passionate about.
Tuk-tuk riding in Bangkok
Hopping into a tuk-tuk to explore this big and bustling city is a must-do experience in Thailand family vacation packages. The kids will love the adventurous feeling of a tuktuk wriggling around every corner of the city.
See the temples, any city
This is a must when you are in Thailand as Buddhism is practiced by more than 95% of the population. It’s easy to encounter a temple on your way as they are many.
Recall the glory days of the powerful Siam Kingdom
80 kilometers from Bangkok, Thailand’s old capital of Ayutthaya is filled with ancient ruins - heritages of the Siam Kingdom, a golden age of Thai history. Among the recommended relics are Wat Phra Sri Sanphet and Wat Mahathat - a Buddha head emerging from the roots of a tree.
Taste northern Thai food, Chiangmai
Rich with history and native ingredients, Northern culinary specialties satisfy every hungry soul. In a wide range of Chiang Mai food, Khao Soi is the most famous. It is a perfect blend of curry soup and coconut milk to create a thick, rich texture, served with crunchy fried noodles.
Know about Lanna's Culture, Chiangmai
The cultural heaven of Chiang Mai is rooted in the history of the 700-year-old Lanna kingdom. Chiang Mai has its own culture, cuisine, and crafts which are so strong that it is unofficially named Thailand’s “second city.” Meet old and young talented generations in Chiangmai to see how they keep their ancient culture alive.
Meet the elephants
Seeing and walking with the giant is a one-of-a-kind experience in Thailand’s exotic vacation packages. Many ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand give the old, sick, tired elephants a new chance to enjoy life. And your visit contributes to this meaningful activity. (Feel free to ask us for the information).
Learn Thai recipes
After tasting all the best bites from north to south, you might ask yourself why Thai food is so delicious. Attend a cooking class where you can learn much more from a local chef than by reading a cookbook. First and foremost, the class will help you to get familiar with Thai basic ingredients such as marinade pastes, curry paste, and Thai chili jam which lead to a wide variety of Thai dishes.
Go to Pai - Best Thailand trip package for couple
This small town is one of Thailand’s brightest hidden gems . Pai bamboo bridge is Instagram-worthy, the cafes have romantic views, and its lovely night market is an experience you simply cannot miss.
Visit Chiang Rai
The sleepy town of Chiang Rai exudes a nostalgic vibe of the olden time. Here is home to the famed White Temple and Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar all meet.
Go to nature
One of the most extraordinary Thailand sightseeing is going to nature at Khao Sok National Park. This place covers 738 sq. km of hundreds-million-year-jungles, picturesque Cheow Lan Lake, towering limestone cliffs, mangrove forests, and rich wildlife. Add this Thailand’s largest protected park to your itinerary to enrich your luxury vacations in Thailand with breathtaking nature.
Beach gateway on the Andaman Coast
The Andaman Sea offers countless sandy beaches with palm trees and azure water. Here, you find Phuket , Thailand’s largest and most well-known island with great viewpoints, interesting night markets, great cuisine, beach bars, Phuket surfing, and impressive temples. Khao Lak is a more quiet place, suitable for families and travelers who want relaxation. Similan Islands are among the most beautiful diving spots in the world, thanks to its diverse marine life, and Koh Lipe , known as Thailand’s Maldives, is a remote dream for couples.
Island hopping on the Gulf of Thailand
Located on the east coast of Southern Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand is perfect for adventurous souls. Hop from the sexy beaches in Koh Samui to Ang Thong National Marine Park with a collection of uninhabited islands and wildlife, Koh Phangan - a mecca of endless full-moon parties, and Koh Tao - a beautiful island full of surprises. When the sun goes down, take part in active nightlife in the beachside restaurants offering Thai seafood and plenty of bars to chill in the stunning sunset views.
Island hopping is always one of should-not-to-be-missed Thailand tours for singles, couples, and families.

From temples to markets to food to waterways to beaches to nightlife, there is something to please everyone. As Thailand – a constitutional monarchy – is the only country in Southeast Asia to not have been colonized by Europeans, its cultural identity remains largely intact. And the Thai people, among the friendliest in the world, love to share their country with visitors. The only question is what not to see!
Destination Must-See's
Bangkok, or the City of Angels, was founded in 1782 by King Rama I – first king of the present Chakri dynasty. It has come a long way in 235 years. It is the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, and one of the world’s most visited cities. With so much to offer, how does one prioritize? Start with its temples, such as Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun. For more culture, visit the Grand Palace and the National Museum.
Buddhist Temples:
Buddhist temples in Thailand are known as wats. There are more than 30,000 temples in Thailand – 400 functioning temples in Bangkok alone. Wat Pho in Bangkok is Thailand’s most sacred site, and home to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This golden Buddha is 151 feet long and the largest in Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew, also in Bangkok, is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most sacred Buddha sculpture carved out of green jade. Bangkok’s Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, has the tallest prang (tower) in Thailand – 220 feet high – decorated with bits of porcelain and seashells.
The Grand Palace:
The Grand Palace, located in Bangkok, is actually many buildings. King Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty, began construction of his royal palace in 1782, and it was used as a royal residence until 1925. Surrounded by four walls, it has a total area of 2,351,000 square feet. There are three main zones: the Outer Court (royal offices, public buildings, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha); the Middle Court (important residential and state buildings); and the Inner Court (exclusive to the King, Queen, and consorts). It is a must-see in Bangkok.
Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai:
In the north of Thailand there are two cities definitely worth a visit. Chiang Rai is the northernmost large city in Thailand. It was founded in 1262 as the second capital of the Lanna kingdom, after Chiang Saen. Some notable sites are temples such as the Wat Rong Khun Temple (the white temple); the Saturday Walking Street market and the Night Bazaar; and the Hill-Tribes Museum and Education Centre. Chiang Mai, or the “Rose of the North,” is Thailand’s northern capital. It succeeded Chiang Rai as the capital of the Lanna kingdom in 1296. Some notable sites here are Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most famous of the city’s 300 temples; and the Sunday Evening Walking Street market.
Destination Must-Do's
Markets are a way of life for the Thai people, and they are popular with visitors as well. The Chatuchak Market in Bangkok has more than 8,000 shops on weekends. Vendors sell fruits and vegetables, clothes, pottery and ceramics, basketry, accessories, flowers, and even pets, among other things. The Silom district of Bangkok has all manner of shopping, from a mall to markets, including a night market. Night markets have a lively atmosphere. You can find local items here, along with food, drink and live music. They can get quite crowded. Floating markets emerged as a result of daily commerce being done along rivers and klongs (canals). Damnoen Saduak, outside Bangkok, is the most famous.
Thai Cuisine:
Thai cuisine is a balance of five flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy. Most people know of pad Thai, or fried noodles, but there are many other dishes to try. Tom Yam Goong is a spicy shrimp soup made with a broth of lemongrass, chillies, lime leaves and juice, and fish sauce. Tom Kha Kai is a spicy chicken soup with chillies and lemongrass in a coconut milk broth. Som Tam, or spicy green papaya salad, perfectly represents all five flavors. Kao Pad is fried rice with egg, onion, and herbs. Gaeng Keow Wan Kai is chicken in green curry – green curry paste stirred into hot coconut milk. And there is so much more! Most dishes are served with rice, a Thai staple. If you prefer to not have your mouth on fire, ask for “mai phed,” or not spicy.
The waterways in Thailand have long been an integral part of life here. Bangkok was once called the “Venice of the East” because of its klongs, or canals. Many have been filled in, but there are still some that are used for floating markets. A long-tail boat, a lightweight vessel with narrow beams, high-pointed bows and a canopy, is used as a floating market “stand,” but visitors can take rides in these boats as well. Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River – “the River of Kings” – is the dividing line between the east and west of the city. And in the north of Thailand, the mighty Mekong River forms a border between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, known as the Golden Triangle.
Kanchanaburi:
The bridge that spans the River Kwai, subject of a famous book and 1957 film, is part of the infamous Death Railway in the Kanchanaburi province in western Thailand. The 258-mile railway, built by Allied prisoners of war and native laborers, served to connect Thailand and Myanmar by land so that the Imperial Japanese Army didn’t have to transport their supplies by sea. It is estimated that more than 100,000 POWs and laborers died during construction, hence the Death Railway name. Today, both the bridge and railway are symbols of peace. There are also two museums and a war memorial.

Thailand: A Place That Has Something for Everyone.
Majestic palaces, ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples, beaches offering stunning scenery, picturesque mountains and bustling shopping places — Thailand has it all. Often referred to as the "Land of Smiles," the warmth of the people of Thailand is a different experience altogether. The hospitality extends to every corner of the country, making it easy for travellers to immerse in local culture.
The Culture
In Thailand, respect is a fundamental aspect of Thai people . Thai people believe in politeness and humility, and they expect the same from you. When interacting with local people or entering a shop, show your humility with a greeting known as "wai." It is a gesture involving a slight bow with palms together, which shows respect.
You'll hear the Thai language spoken in the streets. Learning a few Thai words and phrases like "wai" and "Khop khun ka" (thank you) can help you earn respect from the locals. While the Thai language is the official language, English is the unofficial second language. English-speaking travellers, particularly travellers from North America, will find it easy to converse with locals since most Thai people speak English.
Are you a Buddhist practitioner? Well, if you are — Thailand is your gateway to spiritual tourism. It is the land of Buddhism. The Theravada form of Buddhism is predominantly practiced here. The Buddhist practice is deeply ingrained in Thai culture. You will find temples called "wats" at every corner of the country. Monks hold a special place in the hearts of Thai people, and giving alms to monks is a ritual in Thai culture. So, when you are exploring these temples, pay a visit to the monks and immerse yourself in the ritual of giving alms to the monks.
While you are in Thailand, you cannot miss their traditional dress. In fact, wherever you travel, don't forget to try the traditional clothes of that place. It is a part of a cultural experience that you shouldn't miss out on. In Thailand, the traditional clothing includes "chut thai" for women and "pha pha" for men. Get into these traditional clothing and dress up like a local to get a better feel of the place.
The Best Time to Visit
Travelling abroad can be a rewarding experience only when you travel at the right time. This is true for every destination. Although you can visit Thailand all year round, it is still advised to visit the country from November till early April. During these months, the heavens stop pouring, and the sky opens up. This is the time when Thailand experiences its cool and dry season. It is a perfect setting for an outing at the beach or visiting numerous heritage and cultural sites. Prior to this period, the rainy season ensures the landscape is green and vibrant, making it perfect for visiting national parks and natural wonders.
If you can't make a trip during the November to April period, pay a visit to this place between March and May months. This period is known as the shoulder season. A season which is in the middle of peak season and off-season. During these months, temperatures rise, and the weather becomes extremely hot. If you choose to visit during this period, here's what you can do:
Visit the water festival: April is the month of Songkran, the new year month. During this month, you can celebrate the new year with water fights and other festivals. It is a unique activity to experience.
Great season for divers: The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand boasts crystal-clear water, an abundance of marine life, and stunning underwater landscapes. March to May months are perfect for diving activities in these waters.
The best time to travel ultimately depends on what you want to experience. If you seek pleasant weather and a lively atmosphere, November to April is your best bet. On the other hand, if you don't mind the heat, March to May is the best time to visit Thailand.
Things to Know
Why go to thailand for vacation.
Known around the world as ‘The Land of Smiles,’ Thailand has something to offer just about every kind of traveller. Bangkok’s Grand Palace and most important temples embody the country’s deep connection to its royal family and spiritual life. Foodies will love finding those flavour combinations unique to Thai cuisine. History buffs can explore magnificent ruined capitals like Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, and the western outposts of the Khmer Empire. Those seeking wellness, relaxation and rejuvenation will find plenty of options throughout the country. Meanwhile, Thailand’s southern islands offer some of the world’s best beaches, with food, culture, and wildlife experiences all at your fingertips when you need a more active day.
How long can you vacation in Thailand?
Tourists can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa, and extend this by another 30 days inside the country for a fee. A tourist visa can be obtained for a stay of up to 60 days, and this too can be extended an extra 30 days for a fee.
How long is a trip to Thailand?
It depends entirely on the traveller, but 10 to 14 days is usually enough for a solid introduction to Thailand. This gives you time to explore some of Bangkok and its surrounds, visit northern cities like Chiang Mai , and enjoy some beach time in the south.
How much is a trip to Thailand?
Budget around US$200 per person, per day for a mid-range Thailand vacation. This usually includes guided sightseeing and first-class accommodations. More luxurious options and private tours will set you back around US$300 per day, while less-inclusive Thailand vacation packages can be had for little more than US$100 per day.
What currency does Thailand use?
The Thai Baht trades at around 35 to 1 USD. Hotels, larger stores and many restaurants will accept credit cards, but you will definitely need to carry baht for purchases in markets, at small businesses, and from street vendors.
Do I need to tip in Thailand?
A service charge is often added to bills in Thailand. Beyond this, tipping is not usually expected, though it’s always welcome, particularly in higher-end hotels and restaurants. Taxi drivers are usually tipped around 10 percent.
Where to vacation in Thailand?
Bangkok is ‘the Big Mango,’ where Thailand’s diversity and energy come together in one thrilling city. The capital is a superb sightseeing, shopping, dining, and nightlife destination, but it’s also a good base for exploring nearby regions like the former capital, Ayutthaya, and Kanchanaburi, home of the infamous River Khwae Bridge . To see a gentler side of Thailand, head to the cities and hills of the north. Chiang Mai enchants visitors with its rich history and laid-back pace, while Chiang Rai’s white temple is one of the most intricate and beautiful in Asia. For Thailand’s best beaches and ultimate relaxation, head south to islands like Phuket and Ko Samui .
What to pack for a trip to Thailand
When Thais say their country has three seasons, hot, hotter, and rainy, they may be smiling, but they’re not joking. Light, breathable fabrics are key. Be sure to pack items that cover your shoulders and knees at a minimum for visiting palaces and temples. Slip-on shoes will save you a lot of time as well. The hilly regions of the north are the only parts of Thailand that get cool (between November and February), and even then, a light sweater is usually enough.
Is Thailand LGBTQ+ friendly?
Thailand has long been a popular LGBTQ+ vacation spot, and the local LGBTQ+ community is proud and visible, particularly in Bangkok. The country actively welcomes LGBTQ+ visitors and ‘third gender’ identities are a widely accepted part of Thai culture. In March 2024, Thailand’s Senate voted overwhelmingly in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage, and as of mid-2024, bills aimed at increasing legal recognition for Trans and gender-diverse individuals are pending. Public displays of affection however are a no-no, regardless of orientation.
Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?
You should avoid drinking tap water in Thailand, though it’s usually fine for other purposes like bathing or brushing your teeth. Despite popular myth, there’s no need to avoid ice in most establishments. It comes from ice-making machines, not tap water.
What is the basic etiquette in Thailand?
Thai etiquette has more nuances than any visitor will be expected to master, but remembering a few simple points will make all the difference:
- The Thai bow, or wai , is done by putting your hands together in a prayer position and giving a small nod. The more respect being shown, the higher the hands are usually placed. Foreigners aren’t expected to wai first, but you should certainly return the gesture if it’s offered. Add the word Sawasdee , if you like. You’ll hear this a lot in Thailand, since it means hello, goodbye, thank you, and serves as an apology.
- Always take off your shoes before entering a Thai home or temple, and never step on the threshold. This is said to offend the spirits living there and bring bad luck to residents or worshippers.
- Despite Thailand’s heat (and captivating beaches), shoulders and knees should always be covered when entering temples or palaces, and avoid having potentially disrespectful graphics on your clothing.
- Do not touch a Thai person’s head—even a child’s—and don’t point your feet at someone or prop them up on tables. Do not touch monks at all, and give your seat up for them if requested.
- Absolutely do not insult or make jokes about Thailand’s monarchy. Even stepping on a coin to stop it rolling away can offend, since it features an image of the King. Western versions of the story of Anna Leonowens and the King, including the musical The King and I are also banned in Thailand.
- Always ask, and offer a small payment before taking photos of the locals. Even if they always seem to be smiling, this is only polite.
- Don’t point with your finger. Use your whole hand to indicate something.
- Don’t snap your fingers to attract a server. Instead, smile, extend your hand palm down, and gently flex your fingers in an upside-down ‘come here’ gesture.
Food & Drink
Thai food is a renowned cuisine all across the world, be it in America or India. Its vibrant flavours, aromatic spices, and balance of sweet, salt, and sour make Thai food unique, special, and tasty. While you are there, don't miss the "pad thai" delicacy. "Pad thai" is a stir-fried rice noodle made with rice, noodles, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, and peanuts. To make it flavourful, the dish is flavoured with tamarind paste, fish sauce, and chilli.
Tea, beer, juice, or fresh coconut water - whatever your choice of drink is, you'll find them abundantly. Thai iced tea is a common drink in Thailand made from Thai tea leaves, sugar, and milk. You'll get tea in every part of the country. On the other hand, If you are looking for a cool drink to cool down your body, Singha and Chang beer are your best bet. They are local brands which are widely available and pair well with spicy cuisine.

Sleeper trains are clean and air-conditioned, and beds are multi-share compartments with bunk bed padded berths with sheets, pillow and blanket provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please note that you may be sharing compartments with locals of the same or opposite gender. Your baggage will travel in the carriage with you. There's also a food and drink service available on board. Some may find the air conditioning on the train quite cold overnight so best to pack a jumper and some long pants.
Arrive into Surat Thani this morning and continue by bus (approximately 2.5 hours) to the resort town of Ao Nang in Krabi Province. Ao Nang has a main street with open-air restaurants, shops that light up the sidewalk and bars perfect for kicking back with a beer. It’s also in a great position to hop on longtail boats to places like Railay Beach and the idyllic islands surrounding the bay. There's plenty of free time to relax on the beautiful beaches and get into the spirit of southern Thailand. You also might want to take advantage of some of the optional activities on offer, like a cycling trip that takes you on back country tracks, gets you close to local culture, and rewards you with a lovely afternoon dip in a beautiful waterfall. Otherwise, consider a relaxing massage on the beach (no kidding), or just sit back with a good book and a cool cocktail to watch the sun slip beneath the horizon. This is living. In the late afternoon, visit Baan Na Teen village and take part in Batik Making to learn about this ancient technique of dyeing and then join in a local family for some home-cooked feast. Here is also an opportunity to assist with the preparation of tonight's meal – learn some of the delicious secrets of southern Thai cooking and enjoy a dinner that tastes all the better thanks to your handiwork! This is a wonderful opportunity to absorb some of the daily rituals of Thai culture.

This morning, head out to Ao Nang beach and on board a speed boat to start today’s exploration. Immerse in the beauty of the coast line with stops at Phra Nang Cave, Railey Beach, Koh Tup, Koh Gai and discover the amazing coral and tropical fish through snorkelling in the crystal clear water. Enjoy a day of swimming and snorkelling and return back to Ao Nang beach in mid-afternoon. Tonight, why not grab some travel pals and stroll down the main drag to find a seafood restaurant.

Say goodbye to Ao Nang this morning and continue your journey to Khao Lak. On the way, stop at a great Community-based tourism initiative at Baan Nai Nang village (supported by Mangrove Action Project) and you’ll spend a better half of the day here, experiencing the amazing nature and learning about local culture. Get active and venture out in a kayak to explore the amazing water, limestone cliffs and mangrove forests at Khao Ka Rot. Return back to the village and enjoy a hearty home-cooked lunch after a good workout, then learn to prepare and taste the organic local mulberry leaf tea. Head out for a walk in the village and its organic fruit orchards after lunch before hopping back on your bus and continue to Khao Lak (approx. 3 hours).

- Khao Ka Rot - sea kayaking

Enjoy a free day at Khao Lak. There are plenty to do in Khao Lak. Why not visit Lam Ru National Park andTon Chong Fa Water Fall, or make it a day trip to Similan Islands or Surin Islands? Your tour leader will be on hand to help you make the best of the day.

This morning leave for the tourist haven of Phuket, Thailand’s largest and most visited island. This island is certainly a brasher, more vibrant extrovert to the mellower sibling of the last few days. If a little modern pizazz is what you’re after with your dose of sunshine exotica, look no further – this island offers a little something for everyone. It’ll take about 3 hours to get to Phuket.Once you've arrived on the island, there's a chance to stop at the Tsunami Memorial if you would like to visit. Then continue to Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation which support the protection of turtles and research of the Marine Biodiversity. You'll be able to learn about the important work that they do here and see the different type of turtles at the foundation. Then it's another hour to Kata beach. You’ll stay in the heart of Kata beach, where everything from shops to restaurants to nightclubs awaits.

Phuket is ringed with beaches, each with their own distinct personalities, from a party vibe to perhaps something quieter and more romantic. If you can pull yourself away from the beautiful beaches and curving coasts, Phuket also has a range of activities to fill your day, from Thai boxing exhibitions to cabaret shows. If you love getting out on the water and exploring the islands, then perhaps use your last day to take a day trip out to the stunning Phi Phi and Khai Nok, a tiny island surrounded by white sandy beach perfect suitable for swimming and snorkelling. If you want to spend some time with Thailand’s magnificent elephants, take a visit to the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. You will get to see the elephants in the safety and security of their natural home and get an insight into the behaviour and personal history of each elephant. Perhaps gather together your fellow travellers tonight and enjoy a celebratory dinner.

Why you should visit this Thailand island now – before The White Lotus crowds descend
Koh samui has had a major glow up ahead of filming for the hit show, with plush resorts, michelin-starred restaurants and up-market spas. fiona mcintosh suggests making a trip soon – while it’s still possible to find good deals, article bookmarked.

T he Thai island Koh Samui is about to be hit by the “ White Lotus Effect ”.
Filming for the third series is currently underway and when the show is finally released in early 2025, the island will become one of the most coveted destinations in the world. So now is the time to book that trip before prices go bananas.
As with the first two series, filmed in Maui , Hawaii , and Taormina in Sicily respectively, much of the show will be filmed in the Four Seasons resort . The Koh Samui outpost of the famously upmarket US brand is a fantastical, tropical haven set on a hillside in the northwest corner of the island – all polished teak, cultivated jungle and a perfect arc of private beach.
But with prices currently starting at £1,000 for one night (and this is before it becomes one of the most famous film locations in the world), you need very deep pockets to stay there.
The good news is that there are plenty of other fabulous places to stay on Koh Samui, from family-friendly hotels, to Airbnb villas and some surprisingly swanky youth hostels.
The producers of The White Lotus have made a clever choice. Thailand ’s second-largest island is rapidly becoming known as the most upmarket island in the country. Whilst it’s historically been best-known as a launching pad for Full Moon wipeout parties on Koh Pha Ngan , a 40-minute ferry ride away, things have changed.

Koh Samui’s best restaurants are part of the Michelin Guide , it has its own boutique airline Bangkok Airways (which means you don’t have to suffer through that stomach-rolling ferry ride from the mainland), and it has the highest concentration of five-star hotels outside Bangkok .
This was made blindingly clear to me when we were whisked from the airport (which itself looks like an open-air resort hotel) to the Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui for three days of Hollywood-grade glamour. Let’s put this in context for a moment: the last time I was in Koh Samui 30 years ago, I slept on a palm mat in a beach hut. We didn’t have air con, but we did have a bottomless supply of cockroaches.
This time, I stayed in an ultimate pool billa on the 58-acre Ritz-Carlton estate, with panoramic views across the Gulf of Thailand, complete with private plunge pool, a deep bath overlooking the ocean, Diptyque bath and body products and the sort of firm yet marshmallowy king-size bed that luxe American hotel brands seem to nail every time.
The resort has four restaurants (its steak house, Ranch, has made the Michelin Guide ), a spa village where my Thai fusion massage was one of the best one-hour experiences of my life, and a surprisingly chill and unstuffy beach bar where you can sip a pina colada from a green coconut before slipping into the infinity pool above the resort’s private, sandy cove.
If you ever get bored of doing absolutely nothing, there is complimentary kayaking, paddle boarding, yoga, morning meditation and Muay Thai boxing lessons in an actual ring.
From the road (and there is only one that circumnavigates the island), Koh Samui looks like a chaotic mash-up of fruit stalls, cafes, massage parlours and scooter rentals. But it’s what lies behind that matters – fabulous restaurants, beaches, resort hotels, markets and beach clubs.
Chaweng Beach: Around 7km, a stretch of white, sandy beach and the main hub on the island. Head here for supercharged fun – bars, nightlife and shopping.
Lamai Beach: A lovely stretch of sand and deeper water (better for water sports) and less hectic than Chaweng but with plenty of small hotels and restaurants, including the chilled Baobab bar and restaurant. A good family option.
Bophut Beach: A three kilometre stretch of sandy beach on the north of the island with views towards Ko Phan Ngan. A great place to while away an afternoon. At 7pm and 9pm, grab a beanbag on the beach and a cocktail at Coco Tam’s for the excellent fire show.
Choengmon Beach: A quieter, smaller and more exclusive series of bays near the run of five star resort hotels. Good for a quieter day.
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park: Book a boat trip and enjoy unmissable snorkelling at this nearby archipelago of jewel-like islands made famous in Alex Garland’s The Beach .
There are a number of markets on the island, but if you only do one, make sure it is the Fisherman’s Village Market at Bophut. The walking street, which still features wonky wooden fisherman’s cottages, buzzes with fresh seafood restaurants, food stalls, boutique shops and stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery to knock-off designer handbags and dubious electronics.
Although not a patch on the boggling Grand Palace in Bangkok , the most impressive Buddhist landmark on the island is the golden Big Buddha, set within the grounds of the Wat Phra Yai temple. Close by, is the temple of Wat Plai Laem where you can pay your respects to Guanyin, the goddess of compassion and mercy who looms above the water with her 18 outstretched arms.
The island is rammed with outstanding food options, including exceptional Thai, Chinese and Western restaurants.
Koh Thai Kitchen at the Four Seasons: Exquisite southern dishes, from a deeply fragrant massaman curry, to a red curry with prawns as big as a baby’s arm.
The Ranch at the Ritz Carlton: For when you just need a really amazing steak, wagyu and Angus from Australia , sizzled at your table.
Bang Por Seafood: Locals recommend this simple restaurant on the beach offering some of the most delicious seafood on the island at great prices.
The Jungle Club: Sit back in a bean bag on the deck of this fun restaurant with beautiful views over Chaweng Noi Beach, which serves a Thai and international menu.
Koh Samui is building a reputation as a key wellness destination . Drop in for a massage at one of the many roadside parlours (£10 for a one hour full-body massage). For a day spa experience, most of the resort hotels offer a suite of treatments. Baan Sabai on Bohput Beach offers massages and treatments by the sea. Kamalaya is the island’s most famous luxurious wellness retreat renowned for its A-list clients.
Where to stay

The Mud: Beachside bungalows, outdoor swimming pool, free wifi and onsite bar.
Getting there
Fly direct London to Bangkok with Thai Airways (flight time is roughly 11 hours and 30 minutes) or via Doha with British Airways . Bangkok Airways flies from Bangkok to Koh Samui several times a day.
For the best prices, avoid peak season (Christmas and New Year, as well as European Easter and summer holidays) and aim for the shoulder seasons of May/June and September/October. Rainy season sets in at the end of October and continues throughout November.
