Testimonials

In 2022, after COVID lockdowns, we decided to do a remote area tagalong tour with ‘Big Sky’. Once meeting, we immediately felt comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, with many inclusions and some extra surprises. Daily breakfasts were a huge help when camping. We had several mechanical issues, which they sorted and kept us going. The hosts were very knowledgeable on the history and the bush. We loved the banter and night-time gatherings. Once we got home, we immediately wanted to go again. Ourselves and 2 of the other couples are now going on another tour together with them, next year!   Svante & Helen

A big thank you to you both for our tagalong tour with Big Sky. It was a unique opportunity to explore the Darling River from beginning to end. Your hospitability has been exceptional and the energy during the entire trip was amazing. You have created an extended family atmosphere and we have enjoyed the easy going banter throughout.

We wish you well with all your future tours, stay healthy. Ray and Cheryl

Thank you for everything; it’s been a great trip. Burke and Wills tour. Lynden and Joy

Having just completed Big Sky Tagalong’s Burke and Wills Tour, I can absolutely say it was a most enjoyable and interesting trip. The hosts were very accommodating, friendly and easy to get along with. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and enjoyable with plenty of laughs as well along the way, hence the time went very quickly. I would definitely recommend it. Bill Hill

This was the first time we have travelled in a group/convoy and will do it again, as it was an all-round, memorable, unique experience. The hosts Dave and Jacque were very welcoming, friendly, and made us feel comfortable, and the group we travelled with were also friendly, helpful, and entertaining. Everything was planned out from the cooked breakfasts to the evening get togethers, although you do get time out to do your own thing if you prefer once you have settled into your campsite for the day. We usually stick to the main roads when travelling, but these tours take you to places that you wouldn’t normally go to. About 60% of the travel, we did on tour were on gravel roads, but we found these roads to be in good condition which built up our confidence to try the back roads on our own for the future. There are things to see on these backroads that you probably would never see unless you are with a professional tour such as BIG SKY. They not only know the best places to go, but they also explain the history.   Dave and Jacque also have a plan B if any unforeseen circumstances occur, they are well prepared and have done their research to adjust the tour accordingly. If you have difficulty positioning you van/camper or setting up your equipment, Dave and Jacque are only too pleased to help. (Very helpful for the novice).   BIG SKY are offering more than a tour, it is an adventure that we would highly recommend. Well Done BIG SKY. Outback Gallery

FANTASTIC We shared a recent tag along trip of the Canning Stock Route with 3 other cars with the support of Adam . While all the drivers were competent and experienced in 4WD outback travel, for safety and backup support we sought the services provided by a tagalong arrangement . Adam was an amazing support as a guide over the roughest track in years and offered much needed mechanical and general vehicle support . His local knowledge of the best camp and points of interest made the trip enjoyable and stress free . Adam also rescued a young couple travelling solo (albeit their 2nd trip)who had managed to get themselves off the track and hopelessly bogged . Without his assistance they would have waited days for an emergency remote rescue . None of our group needed rescue thanks to being part of his tagalong . Definitely recommend a tagalong arrangement when travelling this remote and rugged track

We travelled with Adam on both the Simpson Desert and Canning Stock Route trips. Both trips were outstanding despite the Simpson Desert being flooded and closed. Adam rerouted our trip to ensure we still had a fabulous time. Adam was great company and ensured we had a 5 star experience due to his knowledge, experience and advice. This was invaluable when we encountered some vehicle issues. I would highly recommend Adam to anyone wanting to travel the outback.

I'd like to thank Adam for another exciting journey through the North Simpson Desert and across the Madigan line. As always, the trip was well run and managed, with spectacular scenery and a remote element that was truly amazing. The social interaction of an evening was always great fun, leaving those in the group good mates and ready for more.

Over the last few years I have also done a Cape trip, Hay River trip, and Darling River run with Tracks 4x4 Tagalongs all of which were fantastic, as well as a Victorian High Country trip which we will never forget, the tracks, camping and scenery was second to none.

Adam is a true professional with a vast knowledge in the off road adventure world who conducts himself in a friendly manner and at the same time brings the security that comes with at least 30 years of 4wd experience to make every trip a true adventure. I’d follow him anywhere and would highly recommend Tracks 4x4 Tagalong for any adventure trip.

We were thrilled with the skill, care and attention that Adam provided when we did his tag along trip on the Hay River Track and Madigan line. Due to a medical condition, we were somewhat anxious about travelling into the remotest parts of Australia and Adam’s background as a remote area Paramedic as well as his comprehensive levels of first aid and communications equipment made us comfortable to take the journey.

Inevitably, and probably due to our lack of experience, when we got bogged Adam demonstrated his expertise and patience to safely extract us from trouble and have us on our way.

This was the trip of a lifetime with the most picturesque scenery and great company. We would highly recommend such a tour and in such good company.

Just completed the Darling River run with Tracks 4x4 Tagalong, a great trip. Adam is a natural leader and considerate to everyones needs. Great trip, will join Adam again.

Just completed the Hay River Track loop with Adam. It really was a great trip- so well put together. Maximum exposure to some terrific places - everyday was an adventure. Adam's calm and thoughtful approach to the journey and fellow travellers ensures we travelled with confidence and achieved a great outcome. I'm in my seventies but our party was made up of teenagers, young parents and older travellers. The atmosphere within the group was always harmonious and respectful - a reflection of the enjoyment experienced by all. Many thanks Adam- we'll be back.

Brilliant trip along the Darling River. Highly recommended tour group.

Had a great time! Adam puts a fantastic itinerary together in order to give you unique experiences. Have just returned from Simpson desert trip and absolutely loved it. Tour was fully equipped with first aid equipment, safety communication devices and with permits for national parks.

Very well organised. Adam was very helpful and knowledgeable. Went out of his way to make people feel welcome. Nobody was made to do anything they didn’t feel comfortable with. We had to leave the trip early because of a medical condition and Adam kept checking in to see how I was feeling. Would love to do another trip with Adam in the future.

Adam keeps his tag along groups small, which is fantastic as you get an opportunity to know your travelling companions and you feel like you are part of something special. Which you are. I have had the opportunity to travel on 3 tours under Adam's guidance and have already paid my deposit to do the Canning in 2023. I cannot rate Tracks 4x4 high enough and would recommend them to anyone.

Starting off on our trip I stated my 4wd experience was at a novice level, after the trip I can safely say that my experience level jumped up a few notches, the trip was amazing, driving through the Simpson desert guided by Adam at Tracks 4X4 Tagalong was an experience we will never forget, driving in a convoy lead by an experienced guide, to give you tips on how to safely navigate the terrain was invaluable, driving up and over sand dunes, through salt pan's and rivers. Looking forward to doing another trip with Track 4X4 Tagalong again soon

We had a fabulous time. Camping spots were beautiful and scenery was amazing. Adam took us to some beautiful landmarks that really made the trip. Kids enjoyed it so much and it was great that it worked out to be in the NSW school holidays.

I joined Adam for a second time, this time on the Victoria High Country trip. Being from Victoria, this was the perfect short trip, perfectly fits in a week's holiday. It would be easy from NSW as well, straight down the Hume to begin in Mansfield. The trip itself was great fun. A good mix of driving, some scenic tracks to some steep rocky climbs. I've always wanted to do Billy Goats Track and it made for an entertaining drive and we were rewarded with spectacular views at the top. Adam knowledge ensured all vehicles made it safely and he had picked out some amazing campsites along the way. You don't need all the gear to enjoy this trip and the stock Prado in our group proved it. Don't wait any longer, just book it, pack the car and go.

We recently completed the Tag-A-Long trip to the Tip of Australia, Cape York, following our very knowledgeable and well-prepared guide, Adam Smith. It was a well-balanced route, offering some challenging 4WD terrain mixed with the Nth Qld rugged dirt highways. Each night we stayed at interesting locations, luckily in air-conditioned accommodation. The food was always of good quality and in country style portions. We had a great group of people on the tour who all mixed very well, making for enjoyable banter at our stopovers. It is a trip you have to do to experience the vastness of our amazing country. We’d recommend Adam’s tours for an amazing adventure.

Thanks Adam for a great trip and being a great leader. We had a fantastic time, much better than I was anticipating. Loved the scenery, touring, getting dirty, bumpy tracks, river crossings, camping and most of all our travelling companions. Will do another 4x4 for sure.

A great trip, terrific company, well improvised itinerary given the Simpson wasn't possible. Thanks Adam, plan to be back next year.

Thanks for an awesome trip....Dynamic itinerary adjusted to weather and park conditions....We had a great time.

Adam is an exemplary trip leader, we enjoyed every moment of our “Epic” adventure of ‘The Canning Stock Route N/S June 2023. Adam’s experience and appreciation of the outback is 2nd to none. We would defiantly recommend Tracks 4x4 Tagalong for your next Epic Adventure

We loved the Tracks 4x4 Tagalong trip we did with Adam . Every day provided different driving challenges ; hill climbs, river crossings, gravel roads , rocky ledges and bush tracks . The extreme driving was the fun focus and the bonuses were the views , the camping , the huts , the history and the great company of the others. A fabulous week in the beautiful Victorian High Country . Many thanks Adam

March 2024, Victorian High Country Adam Smith may well be thought the 21st Century Man from Snowy River. No runaway colts, no fancy Clancy, no rampaging mobs of horses, but he sure knows the Victorian High Country inside out. We spent five days traversing one fabulous vista after the next, through different landscapes, ascents, descents, and numerous water crossings; plenty to test the mettle and metal of the drivers and vehicles. We had a great itinerary that had us sated every night but raring to go again the next morning. Adam is a skilled guide and leader. He's knowledgeable and informative and ever ready with constructive advice when needed, and some (i.e. me) needed it more than others, believe me. And speaking of others, we were in a group of eleven and everyone fitted in like we were old mates. Tracks 4x4 Tagalong trips are a fantastic way to explore the exciting bits of our great country. Do it and have a fabulous time.

Enjoyed a wonderful 2 weeks exploring Cape York under Adam's relaxed but professional guidance. Everything was well organised and being on a tagalong gave us the confidence to go places we would not have had the confidence to visit solo, even if we had known about them. Adam really knows the Cape and has all the equipment and knowhow to help you avoid and, if necessary, get out of difficulties. Highly recommended for everyone from relative novices to the experienced.

16 Best Tag-Along 4WD Off Road Tour Companies in Australia

“Never let someone else define your adventure, or tell you how to do it. Not even us.”

This is the message we put at the beginning of each post.

The Rough As Guts mandate is that we must always tell it like it is, regardless of popular opinion.  Sometimes it may seem like we’re trying to gate keep the word “adventure” when we say things like “real four wheel driving” or “real camping”. That’s not our intent, but what we damn-sure are hell-bent on, is to make sure people are never putting their limitations on others, advising against reasonable risk and lowering the bar for people who just might have gone and done something incredible if they hadn’t been talked out of it.

Your life is your adventure. Live it however the hell you want.

Table of Contents

Today we’re going to showcase 16 highly recommended tag-along tour companies in Australia.

While we offer tours ourselves at Rough As Guts, we’re a boutique operation with limited tours each year ( click here to see our 2024 schedule ), so we can’t be everywhere or accommodate all adventurers throughout the year.

For that reason, we wanted to compile this list to make sure that you get the best adventure in Western Australia, even if it can’t be with us. And just while we’ve got you, click here if you want to express interest our inaugural Shark Bay to Byron Bay tour, crossing Australia from the Westernmost point of the mainland, to the Easternmost point.

What’s a Tag-Along Tour?

Tag-along tours are also known as self-drive 4WD tours.

During self-drive tours, participants drive their own vehicles while following the lead of the guide who is in their own vehicle. Inclusions vary greatly from company to company, and some only include guiding clients through a pre-planned route while some may include access fees, campground fees, permits and even catering.

Pros / Cons of Tag-Along Tours

Pros of tag-along tours.

  • One of the biggest appeals of tag-along tours, according to our own clients, is the safety aspect. We’re not really talking about safety in terms of being less likely to become the victim of a crime (although that is a factor for some, who prefer the safety in numbers approach). Rather, we mean safety from the dangers of being in the remote Outback or desert, where getting stuck or breaking down can spell disaster. Any tour operator worth their salt will have recovery gear, emergency communication equipment and can ensure you’re never left stranded.
  • Tackling the Canning Stock Route or Simpson Desert is no meagre feat and takes a bit of doing. Even if you’re not taking on such a remote route, going on your first 3 day four wheel driving and camping adventure, is still an undertaking. Tour guests often state that they wouldn’t take on many of the tracks and challenges they’re presented with, if there weren’t other vehicles nearby to help them if they get stuck. Tour guides will not only have the appropriate recovery gear with them, but they will know how to use it safely and in a manner that doesn’t cause any vehicle damage.
  • Route and logistics (saving time). A 12 day 4WD route with great camp sites, places to see and adequate fuel and water re-supply stops takes a lot more than 12 days to find. Many people would like to find these places for themselves, but don’t have the time because of work and life commitments. A lot of people also have no desire to do the leg work for themselves and just want these aspects taken care of. Either way, tag-alongs often solve these problems. We know from experience that a great 12 day route takes 3 to 4 weeks of driving and exploring to find.
  • I can’t speak for anyone else, but often I have a timeframe constraint and can’t stop at all the interesting places along the way. It’s then not uncommon for the place you do decide to stop at, to be a bit of a let down. On a guided 4WD tour, someone has already spent the time figuring out which places are worth stopping at and will generally allow enough time in the schedule to see them.
  • Camp Sites. A bit like finding the worthwhile sights, it can be tricky to know where the best camp sites are. So many times I’ve unknowingly stopped short of an amazing spot and settled for a lacklustre place to camp. Sometimes it’s the opposite and I’ve driven past something good, only for options to start thinning out. By going with someone who knows the area well, you can be sure to get the best camping spots.

Downsides to Tag-Along Tours

  • There’s no denying, choosing to go on a tag-along tour does add substantial cost. For many, this cost will be too prohibitive to justify. However, for some it’s a question of value and when there’s existing costs such as fuel or time off work, they want to ensure they’re getting the most out of what’s already a significant expense. The tour fee then becomes the insurance policy, to make sure that the money already being spent goes to the best use possible.
  • Not everyone enjoys being part of a larger group activity and that’s fine.
  • Sometimes your free time just doesn’t line up with available tour dates. But, that’s why we’ve put this list together, so you’ve got the best possible chance of finding something that works.

What You Need to Join a Tag-Along Tour

Aside from a good attitude and your own car, there’s not a whole lot that you need. Most times, joining a tour reduces the amount you need to take.

Typically, you will need at least the following:

  • 4WD Car. Not a “soft-roader” or all wheel drive such as a Subaru Forrester. SUV style cars, even though they’re 4WD, generally aren’t suitable. Such models include Porsch Cayenne, Mitsubishi Outlander (4WD version), Range Rover etc.
  • Additional fuel capacity. Jerry cans are generally sufficient, and you don’t need a long range tank if you don’t already have one.
  • Cooking Equipment. Most extended tag-along tours don’t include catering, owing to the logistical difficulty.
  • 10L per person, per day will cover drinking and dish cleaning water. It may sound like a lot of water, but it gets hot out there. Some longer tours, like ours on the Canning Stock Route, will have water resupply stops along the way. Your tour operator will let you know how many days between resupply stops.
  • Camping/Sleeping. We generally opt for swags instead of tents as they’re faster to pack down and set up. With multiple people, they can take up a bit too much space when packed, which is their main limitation.

How Much do Tag-Along Tours Cost?

We hate writing generic “how long is a piece of string” type answers, but this one is a bit tricky as it does depend on the inclusions and varies from company to company (as does quality).

As a rough guide, here’s our prices (as of March 2024). We include everything such as permits, national park fees, campground fees and levies, except for catering.

  • Our 5 day tour is $1,380
  • Our 8 day tour is $2,700
  • Our 12 day tour is $4,970

It’s tempting to try and break this down into a daily average, but that doesn’t take into account the logistical differences. For example, our 12 day tour goes through multiple national parks (park entry fees), multiple native title areas (permit fees), uses the Canning Stock Route (permit fees) and our own fuel costs up to $3.40 in remote communities which adds to our operational costs. There’s also 2,500km of bitumen just to get to/from the start and finish. Compare this to our 5 day tour which stays within 600km of Perth and has no areas requiring permits.

But with that said, if you want to break it down that way, the daily prices on this list range from $200 per day to $600 per day. This variance is usually due to inclusions and levels of remoteness. Operators that stay closer to major cities (Perth for the WA list), generally have lower prices.

What to Look for in a Tag-Along Tour Company

  • Owner Operated

Generally, we recommend looking for a company where one of the owners is also the tour guide. This isn’t a hard and fast rule and we do have some exceptions, but it just means that the person you’ve been talking to and dealing with (and therefore getting a feel for their attitude and level of service) is the same person you’ll spend weeks in the bush with.

This is more a matter of personal preference, but does have a big impact on the experience. Groups with too many vehicles move very slowly, so you’ll either be limited for time at rest stops to make up for this, or not covering very much ground at all.

If groups are too small, that can also be a problem. Spending a few weeks in the bush is a real test of social skills and patience if there aren’t enough people there as a buffer. With enough people, the chances of finding someone you get along with are much higher.

What’s Included

What are you paying for? Check to see if the tour operator is organising and paying for national park fees, campground fees, native title permits and fees for using station tracks. If they don’t, it’s certainly not a deal breaker, but see if the extra expense and hassle is worthwhile compared to other offerings.

Emergency and Contingency Plans

There are minimum requirements generally imposed by insurers or the DBCA (if you’re using national parks), but they’re not all that comprehensive.

Ask your would-be tour operator what they carry for emergencies. Do they have satellite phones, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), satellite trackers etc. It is worth checking that they do have a plan ITSHTF (if it hits the fan).

Best 4WD Tag-Along Tour Companies Outside of Western Australia

In no particular order.

Our criteria for inclusion includes:

  • Owner operated. This doesn’t exclude them if the other factors are good, but it is a consideration.
  • Not just how many years in business, but their experience in a similar field.
  • Public reviews.
  • Tour schedule. Doesn’t matter how good they are, if they’re not doing any tours this year.

Please also see the following tour providers listed in the WA section, that also provide tours outside of Western Australia: Spirit Safaris; Tracks 4×4 Tagalong;

Expanded Info

You don’t find many tag-along tour operators that have been in the game for over 40 years, but that tenure is something that these guys can proudly claim. Pindan Tours and 4WD Training are based in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and are an experienced owner operated tag-along tour and 4WD driver training provider.

They have a variety of options for tours through the Flinders Ranges as well as a few options in the Simpson. Their longest tour is 32 days and comprises the Canning Stock Route and the TAR (Trans Australian Railway)

Adrenalin Offroad Centre

  • Blue Mountains
  • Victorian High Country
  • Comprehensive tour calendar
  • ~$250 Average daily price for one person
  • Prices don’t include passenger
  • 4.5/5 on Google

Adrenalin Offroad centre is a 4WD accessory outfit as well as a tag-along tour provider.

They have a very comprehensive tour calendar with a lot of routes. Most of their tours are based in the Eastern states with a few in the Northern Territory and one in WA which covers the Gibb River Road. With stores in Sydney and Melbourne, it’s not unexpected that all their smaller tours are in that corner of the country.

Adrenalin offer very competitive prices, so if you do choose to inquire about their tours, make sure to ask how large their groups are and what’s included in the price.

Travel West

  • Outback Queensland
  • Owner operated
  • ~$570 average daily price, per person
  • 5/5 on TripAdvisor

Travel West offer a variety of tag-along tours that have a lot of optional extras on the way, such as scenic flights.

Their tours are motel accommodated, which means that getting to the places with accommodation, may involve more gravel roads and less hardcore 4WD tracks compared to some camping tours. That’s not to say that between Birdsville, Innamincka or the Simpson, that there won’t be a lot of 4WD fun in the dirt. But, if you are wondering how off-road the focus will be, give Deb and Graham from Travel West a call and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Tag-Along Tours of Australia

  • “Gulf Savannah” (West side of the cape)
  • Transcontinental – Byron Bay to Shark Bay (the Easternmost point of Australia to the Westernmost point.
  • Owner operated, based out of Cairns
  • ~ $400 per day, per vehicle

If I didn’t live in WA, this is what I’d be doing with my life: Running tours up the cape, around the Gulf, through the Simpson and across the country from Byron to Steep Point. These guys tick most the bucket list tracks, have good reviews and a tonne of social proof. I’ve never dealt with them personally, but they have all the right endorsements, accreditations and reviews that are too hard to get without being a good operator.

Not only do they have the best domain name in the business, they’re also one of the few tag-along operators that has a clear, easy to navigate website that answers all your questions. Surprisingly uncommon in this industry.

The Offroad Tradies are an owners-operated outfit from NSW, mainly specialising in NSW and Vic for their offroad tours, with a few more remote options on their calendar as well. They have some of the cheapest prices anywhere and are fully inclusive. They even cater! The only thing we can say about their prices is: Get in quick.

Luke and Curl are two former tradies who made the rare decision to ditch what is arguably the most reliable occupation, in exchange for the total uncertainty of running a tourism outfit. It’s a sign of real passion for four wheel driving and camping, and something to take note of.

Best 4WD Tag-Along Tour Companies in Western Australia

Rough as guts.

We’re not afraid of a bit of self-promotion. If we didn’t think we could hold our own in terms of quality, value and reliability, the last thing we’d do is go to all this effort to make a list of our competitors.

We have a rising tide lifts all ships type of approach, and we’re also very proud of the service we’ve created, so here’s a bit about us.

  • Three Desert/Canning Stock Route
  • Holland Track & Goldfields
  • We can do bespoke routes/itineraries
  • Boutique tours limited to 6 vehicles
  • ~$360 Average daily price per vehicle
  • Price includes passenger

We specialise exclusively in Western Australian adventures and only offer our own unique routes, rather than covering generic itineraries such as the Gibb River Road, Canning Stock Route or Holland Track. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with companies that do offer these tracks end-to-end, but we wanted to differentiate ourselves and put our experience, having explored all over WA, to good use.

Rough As Guts isn’t the cheapest option, but that’s because we limit our trips to six vehicles. We have found 6 to be a great number because it lets us move at a good pace, without the group having to spread out too far. We’ve seen tour convoys where people have gotten stuck and the tour leader was more than 60km further up the track. Generally, a six vehicle group will have more than 10 people, which is a good number for group cohesion and morale.

One of the primary factors for our premium pricing, is that we don’t like using “from pricing”, where the price slowly creeps up with every inclusion. We see this happen often and it’s generally when prices only include the driver. Another way this happens, is when the price doesn’t include national park fees, native title permits, campground fees or station access fees, where the client ends up sending hundreds of dollars more than the price they originally anticipated.

  • Holland Track
  • Gibb River Road
  • Dirk Hartog Island
  • 8/5 on Google
  • Well priced
  • ~ $400 average daily price per vehicle

Explore WA is (as the name suggests) a West Australian owned and operated tag-along tour provider, operating solely out of this beautiful state of ours.

They have good prices which include permits & passes and generally limit their numbers to 7 vehicles per tour, except for their Oombulgurri trip.

Get Lost Tours WA

  • Israelite Bay
  • Tours ranging from 1 to 10 days
  • Reversing courses available
  • ~ $250 Average daily price per vehicle

Get Lost Tours WA are based out of Perth and have been going since 2019. All their reviews are 5 star. We have been at some of the same expos/shows as Get Lost and have heard good things about them. We’ve never bumped into them on the road, but we largely have different routes to them, so it’s not unsurprising.

They are very competitively priced. While they don’t offer routes as remote as some others, with the majority of their tours being coastal, take it from me that there’s plenty to see in these areas and you’ll get an insiders look by choosing a tour guide experienced in these areas. These guys are the experts for these areas. There’s so many hidden gems in these places and it’s a bit like a Pirates of the Caribbean trope where they can only be found by those who know where they are.

Get Lost Tours also provide reversing courses, so if you have recently gotten a caravan or camper trailer for the first time, get in touch with the Get Lost team.

Epic 4WD Tours

  • Perth Coast
  • Preston Beach
  • Darling Range
  • Wildflower tours
  • Tours ranging from 1 to 7 days, with one 14-day tour available
  • 5/5 on Google, but limited number of reviews
  • ~ $200 per day average price for most tours.

Epic 4WD Tours are an owner-operated tag-along company based out of Perth. They appear to be one of the newer operators, which would explain their lower number of reviews, but after a bit of digging I have discovered that they’re run by a friend of a friend who is someone I know to be very trustworthy in this arena.

Their prices are probably the most competitive you’ll see anywhere in WA. This is likely due to them specialising in shorter trips that are closer to Perth and I’m unaware of what their inclusions are. That would be something worth asking them about, before booking a tour.

Pemberton Discovery Tours

  • Tag-along or charter options both available
  • Other tour options such as wine tours or Bibbulmun/Munda Biddi transfers
  • $350 per day (single day, not overnight) per vehicle
  • 9/5 on Google

Pemberton Discovery Tours are exactly that. Based out of (you guessed it) Pemberton, they focus on day trips with a mixture of charter as well as tag-along. If you’re in that beautiful part of the country, they’re well worth a look. Particularly if you’re new to four wheel driving and want to dip your toe in with a single day outing.

Some of the dates and information on their website hasn’t been updated recently, but they are still operating, so shoot them an email or give them a call.

  • 7 to 19 Day tours
  • ~ $500 per day, per vehicle (two people)
  • 3/5 on Google. Limited number of reviews.

Otto Tours are run out of Perth by a guy called Otto who has been in the game over 30 years. My experience with them is limited, but when I first started looking at starting this business, Otto was one of the people I reached out to and one of the few who responded to me with helpful insights. As a general rule, I find that people aren’t helpful to their would-be competitors, unless they’re confident in their own services. I take it as a good sign.

Another thing I have found to be reasonably common, is that tours run by “old school guys” are less likely to have lots of online reviews because they’re not inclined to ask for them. Due your own due diligence, but don’t write them off for that exclusively.

Spirit Safaris (Ride-along, Not Tag-Along)

  • Not a tag-along tour operator, their guests travel in Spirit Safari’s cars
  • Birdsville/Strzelecki/Oodnadatta & Lake Eyre
  • Tanami Track
  • Sydney to Uluru
  • Darwin to Cairns

We wanted to include at least one option for anyone looking for an experience that is not self-drive. It’s outside our area of expertise as we only do tag-alongs ourselves, but we have seen Spirit Safaris vehicles out and about and have never heard anything negative.

Tracks 4×4 Tagalong

  • Maralinga & some Beadell tracks
  • Lorella Springs
  • ~ $300 per vehicle, per day

Tracks 4×4 Tagalong is an owner-operated company based out of the Hunter in NSW. They’ve got an impressive list of tour options all over the country and can back this up with a stack of photos and reviews.

Website: https://tracks4x4tagalong.com.au/

Kimberley Dreaming

  • Tag-along & ride-along both available
  • 1 Day tours from Kununurra
  • East Kimberley
  • Wet season waterfalls
  • 1 to 13 Day tours
  • 6/5 on Google
  • ~$560 Per vehicle, per day. See below for explanation

Kimberley Dreaming area husband and wife owned and operated outfit based out of Kununurra. Predictably, their tours are all centred around Kununurra as a departure point which is great because there is so much to see within a short drive and the North East Kimberley has so much to offer.

They offer half day and single day tours, which makes it a bit irrelevant for us to do determine an average price from all their tours, if we’re going to compare it to most other operators who only offer multi-day camping tours.

Their ride-along pricing starts from $329 per person for a half day ride-along, or $500 for a full day ride-along.

Their 1 day tag-along is $329 per person. Their 3 day tag-along is $1,699 for two people, which is what we’ve used to determine a per vehicle price of $566 per day.

Australian 4×4 Treks

  • Beadell Highways
  • Arnhem Land
  • New Zealand South Island
  • Highly accredited and qualified

Australian 4×4 Treks are owner operated and run from Queensland. Not only do they have a very comprehensive tour calendar across most of Australia, they also run tours in New Zealand and in Nepal through the Himalayas.

The owner, Tony, has a list of accreditations, endorsements and qualifications as long as my arm (I’ve got very long arms), and has tonnes of experience in the game.

Big Sky Tagalong (Caravan Friendly

  • Darling River
  • Broome to Cairns
  • Transcontinental – Byron to Shark Bay (see more below)
  • Less of a true 4WD tag-along and more road oriented (good for grey nomads)
  • 5/5 on Google – But, only 2 reviews
  • 5/5 on Facebook (9 reviews)

Big Sky Tagalong Tours focus on camper trailer and caravan friendly tag-along tours. If that’s something you’re looking for, then they’re a great option. However, if you’re looking for a very off-road, 4WD focused trip, they might not be the first place you should look.

For example, if you’re looking for a trans-continental tour from Byron to Shark Bay, their route focuses a lot more on dirt roads than bush tracks, whereas Tagalong Tours of Australia (listed in the non-WA section of this article), offer a more off-road centric option. That provides a choice between a trailer friendly, or a more hardcore option for an East to West crossing. If you are dead-set on going West to East though, put your name down here to get notified when we release our tour (not trailer friendly).

Fantastic Toby great inclusion of others. Didn’t realise there was so many 4wd tours. Otto usually only takes German or Euro visitors. Pemberton Discovery Tours have just won tour guide of the year award. He finally got the recognition he deserves. Cheers

Testimonials

Thank you Ross for helping us to achieve reaching the tip of Australia, the helicopter ride over the tip. With out your help we would not had the best holiday. We will talk about this trip and what we achieved for years to come. Looking forward to our next adventure with you Peter & Sandra 10 out 10 from us

Madigan Line

This was a magical tour, with two competent guides, who always made us feel safe in their hands. We didn't just have a holiday or an adventure in the desert but we also learned how to be better drivers. This was such a different experience than any other, I recommend it and I would totally do it again. The landscape was breathtaking, the sunsets astonishing, the wildlife magistic , the wildflowers stunning, but it was the friendships we made that will make the lasting memories. The tour guides made everyone feel like part of their family, welcoming and relaxed and genuine. Ross now knows how to make damper in the camp oven, so be sure to ask him for his world famous desert damper.

Simpson & Beyond

Review written as a passenger on the July/August 2023 Simpson and Beyond 16-day tour. Firstly, thanks Ross and Kenny for running this tour as 4 vehicles had to pull out and it left a group of 6 people to attempt the Simpson. Hopefully the small number travelling and faster drive times with less tows made up for the jinx amongst us who caused 3 tyre issues. There were other issues with the Lead vehicles and both Kenny and Ross displayed the skills to repair the vehicles enough to get to a mechanic. I hope that this trial run ironed out any problems likely on the 2 Madigan Line tours that followed. K & R say that it takes about 6 sand dunes before the tagalongs feel confident to tackle the dunes on their own. But at all times the guys are giving advice as to the direction the dunes turn once on the top. Safety is a big issue and they call the tagalongs through once the lead vehicle is on the flat over the dunes. Interesting to understand the protocol of calling through to any vehicles in the area once going through marker points in the Simpson. We were offered an alternative pick-up point which was appreciated as the town had more flights and more to see while waiting for the tour to start. As we were such a small group and were ready, we left a day earlier so got a 17-day tour which was handy with a 2 night stop at Mt Dare to do repairs and rest before going on to Alice Springs. As passengers, most meals are included bar a few pub meals at own cost. Ross and I did a ‘fast’ shop getting food items specifically that my husband and I wanted to eat. Choose wisely as lunch stops are short and on the go which enabled early arrivals into camp most days. Evening meals were of a meat and 3 vegetable style with a sauce accompanying it, healthy and filling. Suggest taking along a thermal mug or small thermos as the kettle is usually only boiled in the morning. The stretcher with swag on top was comfortable to get into and out of, if not much room to do anything, like reading, once inside it. Suggest taking along a device to play music or podcasts. The provided toilet tent for out in the desert was appreciated and with only 6 people there was never much of a wait time. We were lucky enough to see about 50 camels (in 3 groups) and 30 emus (in one group) plus the wildflowers in fields of colours were wonderful. We also appreciated that the tour went on many different roads/lines in the area so had the opportunity to visit many lookouts and sites. Ross and Kenny both were very obliging to any needs we had as far as stopping to take photographs or logistics once we were on foot in towns. Highly recommend Kookaburra Tagalong Tours as an option for a passenger and look forward to possibly doing another tour in 2025. V (and B)

This trip has it all. If you love getting off the blacktop and getting back to nature, this trip is for you. There are hidden gems, spectacular scenery, towns that ooze country charm, mountains, rolling hills, valleys, rivers and creeks, and good old Aussie country pubs. History for the history buffs, and flora and fauna for nature lovers all mixed in with endless photo opportunities as you travel along roads and tracks few get to see. All at a leisurely pace and to top it off, your guide is the best you will ever get to travel with; what Tiny doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing.

Kookaburra Tagalong Tours We have just finished a tagalong tour crossing of the Simpson Desert Munga Thirri in Australia. We hired 4WD vehicles and joined Koolaburra Tagalong Tours. We crossed Birdsville to Mt Dare then up to Old Andado then back across via the Madigan line to Birdsville. Kookaburra Tagalong were absolutely fantastic, highly recommend. We had a great group. What a blast! We undertook the Kookaburra Tours tag-a-long tour of the Simpson desert in August '23. The guides were incredibly warm, capable and trustworthy of getting us out of any strife in the dunes should it have occurred. The breathtakung sun rises and sunsets, the fond memories of sitting by night camp fires beneath glowing stars telling yarns to each other, the long lasting friendships made with other members in tbe group, the beautiful and varied wildflowers, the excitement we all experienced with seeing dingoes and other wildlife, and the endearing stories told through the eyes of our dear mascots kooka and emu.... a must do for anyone seeking adventure in the vast Australian outback. We will carry those fond memories with us forever and extend many thanks to Ross and Kenny for their amazing organisation and leadership. We'll be back! Tania & Elaine

Simpson 2023

It's the great friendship between Ross and Ken that sets the relaxed casual mood for a wonderful crossing of the Simpson Desert, which we have just completed, with these principals of Kookaburra Tagalong Tours. Having no experience in desert driving, nor sand dune crossing, we appreciated Ross and Ken's pre-trip advice and assurances in the preparation of our vehicle. During the actual crossing, knowing that Ross and Ken had prepared all official passes, identified campsites, had emergency equipment and contact capability available, combined with their wealth of practical knowledge and experience, allowed us to relax and enjoy the excitement and scenic beauty of this rarely seen part of Australia. Thankyou to both of you and all the best in your future tours, Gail and Noel

Anzac & Pub Tour 2023

We had the pleasure recently of travelling with Kookaburra Outback Tours on their Pub and Anzac Tour and visited a variety of different places including Cunnamulla, Tibooburra , Broken Hill and others. The experience was great and we learned of the history of the towns at the stopovers, learned a lot about the opal mines and the resilience of the miners and had fun with the rest of the team over the campfires at night and also learned some of their stories which were also very interesting. We were impressed by the caring nature of the guides towards the travellers especially when there was a need (and there were a couple). Everyone should see more of Australia! Gary & Cheryl

Could not asked for more

We travelled across the Simpson Desert to Mount Dare & back to Birdsville via the Madigan Line. We were expertly guided by Kookaburra tours under the guidance of Kenny & Ross. We could not have asked for more from them. We left Birdsville on the 11 Aug, returning Saturday 20. with a total of 11 cars chasing each other. It was enjoyable to have the company of others as we endured what the desert had to offer. Thanks Ross

Bucket List

My recent Kookaburra Tagalong tour of Arnhem Land and Kakadu was a bucket list trip which was made completely enjoyable by Ross and Kenny. Ross was able to be flexible and adaptable when dealing with issues that were encountered on the trip such as rain that was unexpected during the dry season. He was vey adept at reorganising and rescheduling to suit changing conditions. Kenny is a most capable right hand man and together with Ross make a formidable team. I would not hesitate to recommend Kookaburra Tagalong tours for those wishing to experience the outback in a safe and friendly environment. Ron

Highly Recommended

Highly recommended I just completed the 11 day Madigan line tagalong tour. the tour leaders Ross and Ken were excellent and highly knowledgeable about this area. It's a great way to travel remotely as there's and instant group of friends and help if there's any glitches. I'll put my name down for one of there tours for next year.'

Go as a Passenger

Go as a passenger. If you would like to enjoy the outback without the cost or hassle of owning your own 4WD vehicle, check out Kookaburratagalongtours options to go as a passenger. I did the 15 daySimpson desert tour and spent my days sitting with Ross as he guided the 5 other vehicles over red sand dunes, gravel and Sandy tracks. I saw places I never thought to see, slept in a swag or a tent most nights. The night sky’s were gobsmacking and the company funny and excited to be out learning and testing their own skills. Ross and Kenny were great guides and everyone seemed to grow in confidence as the days passed. Happy to chat with anyone who might be interested. All I had to take was a sleeping bag. All good and sleeping arrangements taken care of by Ross and Kenny.

Simpson Desert & Beyond 2022

Thank you Ross and Kenny for leading a group of 4wd novices across the desert and back to Birdsville. As the only single driver I have to say that whilst it was tiring it was really exhilarating to know that I had driven across this amazing remote area with its awesome and expansive beauty. I loved the flowers, the colours and the landscapes. The company was just the best. 4 couples old enough to know the best of humour- Monty Python and the rest; great music, historical and geographical references in our afternoon quiz and the hilarity of Kooka News of the day usually round a crackingly good campfire. I really hope we keep in touch - it was such a great time! The Lake Eyre option was just magnificent. So many tour highlights, so much learning and such a huge , exciting and beautiful experience. I can commend this trip to everyone with a 4wd, sense of humour and adventure and love of the great outdoors. Thanks again Ross and Kenny- great job! Thanks

aussie 4wd tag along tours

We completed the 15 day July 22 Simpson Desert and beyond tagalong and had a great time. As novice 4wd people, we were thankful that Ross and Kenny ensured we were able to safely develop our skills while seeing unique and remote areas of central Australia, highlights being the crossing of the Simpson desert with time on all the major tracks and traveling on the Oonadatta track through the painted desert. Ross and Kenny are very flexible and relaxed in their style and are always striving to make sure you gain maximum value and they are always available to assist. This is a safe and hassle free way of visiting remote areas with like minded people and we have no hesitation in recommending Ross and Kenny from Kookaburra tagalong tours. Mark and Julie Gower

Thoroughly enjoyed

We thoroughly enjoyed our “Anzac/Outback Pubs Tour” with Kookaburra Tagalong Tours. The travelling was relaxed with the aim of the tour to enjoy unusual and iconic pubs of the outback. Experiencing Anzac Day in the Opal Fields of Lightning Ridge was a special highlight. When roads were closed due to rain, Ross always ensured we had a safe alternative to our next destination. Nothing was too much trouble, including a request from some of the guests to add in an extra feature not mentioned in the original itinerary. Thankyou Ross and Ken for a most memorable tagalong experience. Sue and Clive Gotlieb”.

A Fantastic Trip

In 2018, I joined Ken & Ross in a convoy of 7 vehicles to explore the Simpson Desert. It was a fantastic trip, and the landscape was spectacular. We travelled from Birdsville across the Simpson Desert and returned via the lesser-known Madigan Line. I felt totally included in the group and the atmosphere of fun and banter around the campfire each night was memorable. This was a trip I’d been wanting to do for years however I just didn’t have the confidence or the CAN DO attitude to tackle it on my own. Travelling tagalong style, I knew that my safety was never in doubt and that certainly changed my attitude and increased my confidence. The trip was well-organised and informative, and the communication was excellent. When we arrived back in Birdsville to find our original route flooded, the team were quick to plan an alternative so that our adventure could continue. Good onya Ross & Kenny!

Cheers, Paul

Would I do another tag-along, yes in a heartbeat

We joined the tag-along tour for a Simpson Desert crossing. At first I thought it was just another added expense, as we usually did our own thing. After a very short time we were bogged in a very difficult situation, which with the combined experience, sharing of equipment, and the company and help of the others in the group, disaster was averted. Puncture repairs and tyre changes are certainly made easier with assistance from your fellow travellers, as they normally happen in the most difficult circumstances. Entry to normally closed areas was accessed with preplanned permits and permission to enjoy sites not normally seen. Advice on carrying petrol and alcohol were advised to avoid hefty fines of up to $30,000, and or jail in some areas. Permits are long drawn out affairs, that are expensive, especially for single tourers, and can be explicit on times of arrival and transitioning some lands that have many hidden treasures not accessible to most. The comfort of having experienced guides and support in times of 4WD'ing difficult terrain is fantastic, along with the fellowship in the evening, and discussing the day gone, and the challenges ahead. Providing your own food and meal requirements was important to me, as I have some special medical and dietary requirements. Safety and backup is important when exploring out of the way places, which was well covered by the tour leaders. Would I do another tag-along, yes in a heartbeat, and we have booked two more trip for this year.

Very organised and a great leader

To whom it may concern I have known Ross for several years and have accompanied him on a couple of his trips. He was very organised and a great leader, taking me to very interesting places. He has a huge interest in our country and I think him sharing that with everyone would be a fantastic thing for him to do. He is a great person, has a wonderful sense of humour and is heaps of fun to be around. I wish him all the best in his business venture.

"Just spent two of the best days touring through the tracks of the Victorian High Country with a overnight stay at Dargo. if - like me - you have very little experience in low range 4x4, John is your man. After a couple of days of expert tutoring, I feel confident to take on any track in this beautiful country. Even if your experienced, this tour won't disappoint. Can't wait to do the huts tour and the Simpson desert. Thanks John."

What our travelers say...

We have just completed the Lap of Australia in our Prado. We did your beginners course in May & it was the best money we ever spent.  It completely prepared us, with the knowledge you gave us we confidently crossed rivers, drove the Gibb River Road with no punctures & drove around Fraser Island without getting bogged. We look forward to taking our 4x4 adventures further.

Just need to let you know how much we enjoyed the Beach Safari Tour last weekend. Jenny and Wayne were excellent leaders - great refresher course in sand driving; really good comments about the areas we drove and great care when we had an issue with a fractured under body plate. The itinerary was very well paced, challenging and incredibly interesting - right down to the last forest expedition to the Walligat National Park lookout - fantastic forest drive and spectacular lookout. This tour was great to the last moment! Jenny and Wayne made sure everyone on the tour got the most from the experience, even including our stay at the Boogie Woogie Hotel. All in all, a great weekend with exceptional leaders, compatible group members and wonderful 4x4 driving experiences.

To anyone thinking of this type of adventure, you could not find a better way than to join Great Divide tours who offer exceptional customer service and support both on and of the tracks.

This was our second tour with Great Divide Tours in six weeks. Australia has many fine places to visit and I can't suggest a better way to see our country by travelling with your company.

We will certainly keep Great Divide Tours in mind for future travel plans.

The trip was absolutely fabulous in every way. The itinerary was excellent and well thought out. The group we traveled with proved to be a great bunch of people and we have made some strong friendships. I'm sure we will be seeing them again.

We had the most amazing, exciting adventurous time of our lives. We saw stunning scenery, camped in beautiful bush settings, met some amazing people, took awesome photos and pretty much had the time of our lives.

Must tell you how wonderful our Arnhem Land trip was. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and thanks to you all for ensuring everything went smoothly for us. This was our 5th GDT trip and it is up there equal with the best we have done. Fantastic country, great companions, facinating seeing the traditional owners aspects throughout - a completely new perpective for us and very welcome. Neill was very professional, a great tour leader and best of all a good bloke who made certain we all enjoyed our trip. Well done to all the team at GDT and thanks again.

Thought I would drop you a note to let you know we did our big Red Centre trip via the Oodnadatta track - a trip of a lifetime. Part of what made that possible was the understanding of and knowledge about 4Wdriving you gave us in the course we did in 2018 and also via your book Travelling the Outback. I reckon we could have probably bumbled our way through it as nervous wrecks,(as we saw some people doing it) but being clued up on set-up, driving and especially the safety gave us the confidence we needed to drive in all conditons allowing us to relax and really enjoy all 7000kms of the trip. So thank you to you and the team - keep up the good work!

In addition to the stunning desert landscape, you'll also have the opportunity to see unique desert wildlife and plants and learn that there's much more to the desert than just sand. This tour starts with an included room at the Dessert Palms Motel in Alice Springs and an included dinner at Lasseters Hotel just down the road. This location has excellent security for yourself and your vehicle. The tour ends in Uluru/Ayres Rock with a complimentary Uluru 3 day pass and a final breakfast.  Some remote off-road experience is desirable as the track is VERY ROUGH. If you're considering this tour for your first desert experience, we suggest you should have a crack at our  Simpson Desert Double Crossing Tour  or the Beadell Highways Trek first. Canning Stock Route

New Tour for 2025! Beadell Highways Trek. Alice Springs to Coober Pedy. 15 Nights

$5775 per vehicle incl. 2 people. 8 vehicles max. off-road camper trailers ok. • 14 may - 28 may 2025 (4 spots left).

Starting with our included first night's accommodation at the Desert Palms Villas and dinner at Lasseters Hotel in Alice Springs, we take on several of the legendary Len Beadell's Central Australian "Highways" on this giant "C-shaped" trek. From Alice, we find the start of the Gary Junction Highway , following this deep into the desert past some remote Aboriginal Communities all the way into WA, before heading South on the very scenic and seldom travelled Sandy Blight Road . Emerging onto the Great Central Road , we visit the Giles Meteorological Station near Warakurna, and then onto Surveyor General's Corner , on the tri-state border of SA, NT and WA.  Popping back out onto the Great Central once more, we refuel at Warburton before tackling the remote Connie Sue Highway Southwards into the Great Victoria Desert . From Neale Junction, it's a 900 km run East on the Anne Beadell Highway through incredibly remote desert country. Along the way, there are several points of interest, including the most remote fuel stop in Australia, Ilkurlka Roadhouse, and the Emu Field Nuclear Test Area . We emerge back out into "civilisation" on the Stuart Highway at Coober Pedy, where we will have a night in the underground hotel, and our final dinner together.  Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour - it is very remote and the corrugations can be quite rough.
