Best Things to Do in Pune for Tourists

Shaniwar Wada

Probably the most famous place to visit in Pune, Shaniwar Wada can rightly be called the landmark of the city. Dating back to 1736, this palace was built by Bajirao Peshwa I, thus one can consider it an important evidence of the glorious history of Peshwa Rule in Pune. The palace boasts five gateways, nine bastions, fine wooden pillars and lattice work. There have been many stories associated with this palace and one of the most popular ones describes this fort to be haunted. No, no don’t drop your plans to visit here! LOL, it is not a place to be missed as it can actually take you down on the road to golden period of Peshwas.

Aga Khan Palace

History buffs, this is the place for you. Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, this palace is a witness to vital incidents of Indian history. The Aga Khan Palace is an eyewitness to the rescue of famine-stricken locals, the imprisonment of Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu and the death of Mahadev Desai and Kasturba Gandhi. The main palace has been converted into Mahatama National Memorial, where photos and paintings exhibiting the life of Mahatama Gandhi have been kept.

Osho Ashram

Visiting Osho Ashram is all together a different experience. The Ashram is situated inside the Koregaon Park area and is known for offering gala time to the guests. The Ashram is infact a 40 acre meditation resort, where meditation, massages, workshops, theatres and other events keep taking place. One can actually choose between spending time in solitude and interacting with people visiting here from 100 countries. It is a perfect place to relax in Pune.

Sinhagad Fort

It is a sight to cherish! The majestic Sinhagad Fort is perched on one of the isolated cliffs of the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadris. The fort was built two thousand years ago and has many myths and tales attached to it. Although, today the fort lay in ruins, it is certainly one of the best reflections of the glorious period of Pune. It has become a popular place to visit in Pune and many of the visitors like to trek to it from the base of the 760m hill that it is perched on.

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

One of the most famous temples in Pune and even in Maharashtra, Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple cannot be missed when planning a sightseeing tour in the city. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Ganesha and was built by Dagdusheth Halwai, a pious and honest man. The shrine is so popular that people from all over the country as well as world visit it. The best time to be here would be around Ganesh Festival.

Chaturshringi Temple

Another popular temple in Pune is Chaturshringi, which was built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The legend has it that there was once was a merchant named Durlabhseth Pitambardas Mahajan who was an ardent devotee of Goddess Chaturshringi. Durlabhseth tried visiting all the temples dedicated to the Goddess but as he grew older he had trouble commuting. One night the Goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to dig at a specific place in North-West of Pune. To his surprise, a natural statue of the Goddess was found here and thus Durlabhseth decided to build a temple here. Therefore, even today, Chaturshringi temple has been of great importance to the locals.

Parvati Hill

An important place of interest in Pune, Parvati Hill is situated at the southern end of the city. The Hill houses four prominent temples of that of Shiva, Ganesh, Vishnu and Kartikeya. The major temple here is called Parvati Temple, which was once a private shrine of the Peshwa rulers. Visitors have to climb 108 unpaved stone steps to reach here and it surely adds to the adventure. The Parvati Museum is a must see here as it houses replicas of ancient paintings and manuscripts.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

This 8 th century rock cut temple is amongst the major attractions in Pune . Carved out of single basalt rock piece, this Pataleshwar Cave Temple is able to grab the attention of many visitors. The temple is said to be built during the Rahtrakuta Era and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga, massive pillars and Nandi Bull are the main attractions of this temple.

Shinde Chhatri

The memorial of Mahadji Shinde, Shinde Chhatri is known for its architectural excellence. A well-preserved structure, Shinde Chhatri has gained the popularity for its fresh Anglo-Rajasthan style of architecture. The main hall has the silver statue of Mahadji; prayer vessels used by the family to propitiate family deity; carvings, paintings and photographs of the Scindia family.

Saras Baug can be an ideal place to visit during the evening. It is one of those places in Pune, where you can sit back and enjoy the view of setting sun. Yes, there is a temple perched on a hillock but visiting it is solely one’s decision. People often come to Saras Baug to spend a lazy and peaceful evening making this park a popular place in Pune.

Bund Garden

Nature lovers are going to love this place, not that Pune lacks places that are blessed with nature’s best but this one is an add on. Somwhere around 2kms from Pune, Bund Garden is a perfect place for those who wish to spend time with nature. It makes a great place for organizing family picnics, laze around and may be read a book or two. One might also see a few migratory birds (if in the right season) and can enjoy boat riding as well.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

Now, I may have to agree with people who think going to a zoo on a tour is waste of time. BUT, I honestly think that paying a visit to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is absolutely worth it. Yes, I know, the zoo has been in news for its reckless handling of the animals but things have changed. The place looks better and there also have been an increase in the number of animals here. The park is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, a snake park, and a zoo that includes 42-acre Katraj Lake. Animals like Deer, white tiger, tiger, sloth bear and elephants can be seen here. The visitors can enjoy boating in the Katraj Lake.

Another haunt for nature lovers in Pune, Mulshi Dam is situated in the west of the city. The area around the Mulshi Dam has been developed into a tourist destination in Pune. Several resorts have been set adjacent to the Lake, which is formed by the water of Mulshi Dam. Those with interest in nature are going to love this place for the splendid view of Sahyadris it offers. It can be a great romantic escape for the love birds and an inspiration for those creative at heart.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

Steeped in history, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is the place that every history buff needs to explore. There are 36 sections in this museum that houses antiques, carved palace doors, pottery, 17th century miniatures, collection of nut crackers, lamps, musical items, hookah pipes, hair drying combs other items from the Mughal and Maratha period.

Khadakwasla Dam

Drive to Khadakwasla Dam , which is located at a distance of 20kms from Pune city. The area around the dam has become quite popular amongst the tourists due to its picturesque setting. Peacock Bay, Kudje village, Neelkanteshwar, located near Bahuli village and Sinhagad road bordering the dam have become favorite picnic spots for tourists in Pune.

Lohagarh Fort

Lohagarh Fort is another spectacular evidence of the golden Peshwa rule in Pune. Situated about 57kms from Pune on Pune-Lonavala road, the fort seems to have a rich history with rulers of several kingdoms occupying it at different periods of time. Mostly in ruins now, Lohagarh Fort has a charm that no one can deny. The fort overlooks the Pavana Reservoir and makes excellent vantage point for photography.

You have to get here, if you are in Pune to explore! Vetal Hill is the highest point in the city and do I need to say more? Offering an incredible view from the top, where Vittala Temple stands, Vetal is certainly a place to be if you are seeking to get some interesting pictures of Pune city. The best way to reach here is to trek, which by the way is an apt idea to execute early in the morning. It is indeed a delight to watch the sunrise view from here.

Eat at Vaishali and Have Coffee at Roopali

Ok, the USP of a trip to Pune! Lavasa , which is situated about 57kms from Pune makes an excellent place for a bike ride adventure. The journey between Pune and Lavasa is simply exotic; the winding path fringed one side with mountain and other with dense forest; roads that are just enough wide for a two –way traffic to move and the view that is somehow indescribable should not be missed. This is probably one bike trip in Pune that will remain etched in your memory.

Spend Time at Pu La Garden

Need a place to hangout in Pune? Well there are plenty and then there is Pu La Garden . Inspired by the famed Japanese Okayama’s Kōraku-en Garden, Pu La or Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden is a place in Pune to sought solace. The garden boasts multitudes of exotic flowers, creative landscape, exhaustive range of plants and a tranquil ambiance that is honestly hard to find anywhere else. So, it is recommended that once you are done with ticking everything on your things to do list, you must spend time here at the lovely Pu La Garden.

1.Shaniwar Wada Palace:  A prominent historical landmark in Pune is Shaniwarwada which is considered as one of the best pune tourist places. It is a majestic fortification which was built in 1732 and during that time it was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire and they ruled over there until 1818. After they lost control to the British East India Company, they could not use it longer. But when they were in the reign, Shaniwarwada was the centre of Indian politics in the 18th century and is one of the famous places to visit in pune with friends. But in 1828, the fort was destroyed by a huge fire and later the remnants were transformed to become a tourist site. Shaniwarwada was a seven-storied capital building of the Peshwas and they wanted the building to be made of stone alone. However, after the completion of the ground floor, the people of Satara insisted that stone monument can be sanctioned and built only by the Shahu King, not the Peshwas. With respect to it, the Peshwas were asked to continue the construction of the building by using only bricks. But when the British attacked, only the base floor survived while all the other floors were completely destroyed. Earlier, the fort used to accommodate around thousand people. The major buildings inside the fort are Thora Rayancha Diwankhana or the court reception hall of the eldest royal member, Naachacha Diwankhana which is the dance hall, Juna Arsa Mahal that is the Old Mirror Hall and so on. Since all the buildings were destroyed in the fire, only descriptions of the remaining areas are available currently. The doorways were made of teak arches with ornamental teardrop teak pillars shaped like Suru trunks. Ceilings were beautified by numerous chandeliers and the floors were filled with polished marble adorned with rich Persian rugs. The walls displayed paintings depicting the Hindu epics. Aga Khan Palace:  Yet another amazing landmark and one of the famous places to visit in Pune with friends is the Aga Khan Palace which was built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892. Originally, the temple’s location was outside the town and when the city limits were expanded, the temple is situated now on the downtown Jangli Maharaj Road. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and it is made of basalt rock which has a cube-shaped sanctum 3-4 meters on each side. Pataleshwar Cave Temple

Vetal Hill is popularly known as Vetal Tekdi. It is one of the most famous places amongst the locals residing in Pune. Mumbai may be the capital of Maharashtra , but it's Pune that's considered to be the cultural capital. Located about three hours southeast of Mumbai, Pune holds much of the state's heritage with a lengthy and mixed history dating back about 2,000 years. Notably, the city's architecture and customs have been influenced by 300 years of Islamic rule (from the early 14th-17th centuries), the transformative reign of the Marathas (from the early 17th-19th centuries), and the British period (from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century). Iconic Maratha warrior and king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj grew up in Pune. He formidably fought against the Mughals and established a separate Maratha kingdom. Pune really flourished in the 18th century when it became the Maratha capital under the Peshwas—who led the Maratha Empire—and political center of the Indian subcontinent. The city was also a center of social reform and center of nationalism during the Indian Independence Movement to oust the British.

Pune isn't on the tourist trail, but it's worth visiting to gain an understanding of Maharashtra's multifaceted background and traditions. These top things to do in Pune encompass that and more.

A colorful 45-minute open-air sound and light show is the main attraction at the remains of Shaniwar Wada fort palace, which was the residence and office of the Peshwas, in Pune's Old City. It tells the tale of Peshwa Baji Rao I and the golden period of the Maratha Empire. Unfortunately, there's no English narration, though. The show in Marathi starts just after sunset at around 7 p.m., depending on the time of year. The Hindi show follows at about 8 p.m. It's held every day except Tuesday and costs 50 rupees (70 cents) per person. Tickets can be purchased at the monument.

Admire the Unusual Architecture of Shinde Chhatri

If you're interested in Maratha history, don't miss visiting Shinde Chhatri as well. This unusual, lesser-known monument honors Mahadji Shinde, who excelled as Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas from 1760-80. He's credited with reestablishing the power of the Marathas after they were defeated by the Afghans in the Third Battle of Panipat. The monument complex consists of a Shiva temple built by Mahadji Shinde in 1794 and the adjoining cenotaph built much later in 1965 by one of his descendants, Madhavrao Scindia, on the spot where he was cremated. Its architecture is a most interesting blend of European and local styles. Inside, the gloriously ornate and captivating interior features paintings of the Shinde family and a statue of Mahadji Shinde.

Shinde Chhatri is located in Wanowrie, on the southeastern outskirts of Pune, and is included in the government-run Pune Darshan bus tour . The entrance fee is 25 rupees for foreigners and 5 rupees for Indians.

Learn About the Indian Independence Movement

The Indian Independence Movement had its roots in Pune with many prominent freedom fighters living there, including Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. While Mahatma Gandhi is best known as the "Father of a Nation," Lokmanya Tilak is regarded as the "Father of Indian Unrest". The new Swaraj—Journey of Freedom Fighters museum has a whole section about him. It has been set up in freshly restored Nana Wada mansion, built in 1780 by the chief administrative officer of the Peshwas, near Shaniwar Wada. Bal Gangadhar Tilak's home, Kesari Wada in Narayan Peth, also has a museum devoted to his life. Towards the end of the Indian Independence Movement, Mahatma Gandhi led a successful strategy of non-violent protests and the withdrawal of cooperation against British authority. Part of Aga Khan Palace, in northeast Pune's Yerawada, has been turned into the Gandhi National Memorial museum. You can see the room where he stayed, rare photos of him and events during the freedom movement, and his personal effects. There are also shrines of his wife and secretary, who died at Aga Khan Palace.

Museum-lovers can quickly fill in a day at Pune's museums. In addition to those mentioned above, there are many more to visit. The remarkable Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum features a delightfully diverse assembly of thousands of rare artifacts, many of which were used in Indian households, privately collected by just one man. It includes traditional musical instruments, war instruments, and royal fashion dating from the 15th century. The Vikram Pendse Cycles Museum has a vast array of bicycles. Head to the Tribal Cultural Museum to find out about the lives of Maharashtra's tribes. Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways will delight children and railway enthusiasts with India’s only miniature city. Those interested in spirituality will appreciate the state-of-the-art Darshan Museum at Sadhu Vaswani Mission , dedicated to showcasing the life of Sadhu T L Vaswani. Wander Through Pune's Oldest Neighborhood

Pune's oldest neighborhood, Kasba Peth, is located next to Shaniwar Wada. Much of it is still frozen in time, untainted by modernization. Who can resist Indian handicrafts? Heritage Handicraft Emporium on M.G. Road was established in 1957 and stocks an extensive range of products from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The Bombay Store next to it sells artistic Indian handicrafts and has its roots in the Independence Movement when it was set up in 1905 to promote Indian-made goods. Warsaa - The Heritage Store, inside Shaniwar Wada, is a non-profit initiative of INTACH Pune that provides a platform for Maharashtrian artists to develop and retail their products. Hunt for Groovy Street Art

The worldwide street art trend is present in Pune, with a multitude of murals transforming the city's walls in recent years. It started with the 2012 Street Art Project in Kasba Peth, led by local visual artist Harshvardhan Kadam. The murals are dotted through the neighborhood's lanes and alleyways, and you'll have to hunt to find them. Hint: there's a map in this article . Gavkos Maruti Mandir (temple) is a good starting point. Maratha Samrat

Award-winning Pune restaurant chain Maratha Samrat (closed Mondays) serves up authentic and hygienic Maharashtrian food in attractive surroundings. The menu includes favorites such as Kolhapuri chicken curry and Malvani-style seafood from the Konkan Coast. Choose one of the thalis (platters) to sample different dishes. The restaurant's branch at Atur House Building on Wellsley Road in Camp is the most central. Hotel Shreyas' restaurant, on Apte Road in Deccan Gymkhana, is also very popular for its authentic Maharashtrian thalis .

The Osho International Meditation Resort in Koregaon Park has remade 12-acres of adjoining public wasteland into a lush landscaped garden with bamboo forest, walking tracks, and stream. Being surrounded by the Western Ghat mountains, Pune attracts numerous species of birds. Attend the Ganesh Festival

India's famous Ganesh festival originated in Pune more than 125 years ago as a way to bring people of different classes and castes together, to unite them against the British rule. There's debate over who started it through—Sardar Krishnaji Khasgiwale, freedom fighter Bhausaheb Rangari, or freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. The festival takes place in August or September each year, with beautifully decorated statues of Lord Ganesh installed on podiums across the city. The idol at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth is very popular and historical. Other top idols include those at Kasba Ganpati temple and Tulsi Baug.

Celebrate Diwali at Shaniwar Wada

Shaniwar Wada is the place to celebrate Diwali in Pune, as citizens from all over the city gather in the evening to light thousands of diyas (small terracotta oil lamps) on the first day of the festival. This tradition dates back to the Maratha Empire, when Shaniwar Wada was their seat of power and they performed the ritual there. It was revived in 2000 by a laughing club called Chaitanya Hasya Yog Mandal.

Enjoy India's Largest Classical Music Festival

Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (formerly Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, and simply called Sawai) has been held in Pune every year since 1953. Legendary classical vocalist Bhimsen Joshi started the festival to honor his teacher, Sawai Gandharva. From humble beginnings, it has developed into India's largest classical music festival featuring unforgettable performances by top singers and musicians. The festival takes place over three days in the first two weeks of December each year. In 2019, it's happening on Dec. 11-13.

Shaniwar Wada

Another historical landmark in the city of Pune, is a majestic ancient fort that was erected way back in 1732 that goes by the name Shaniwarwada. It used to be the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire . In 1828, fire destroyed the fort, so it was rebuilt and converted into a tourist attraction. There used to be several buildings inside but since all of them were destroyed in the fire, only descriptions are now available.

Pune Metro achieves record ridership amid Ganpati festival rush on Saturday

Amid the Ganpati festival rush, the Pune Metro registered a significant rise in ridership on Saturday, September 14 with 243,435 passengers travelling between 6 am and midnight that day. This marks the highest number of passengers in a single day, breaking the previous record of 199,439 passengers on June 30 this year during the Wari procession. Before that, the highest metro ridership was recorded on August 15, 2023 with 168,012 passengers.

Saturday saw a surge in ridership as several Punekars took the opportunity to visit Ganesh pandals due to the weekend, not to mention extended metro services and police permission to operate speakers until midnight from September 12 to 17. The trend is expected to continue on Sunday with the added benefit of Monday, September 16 being declared a public holiday on the occasion of Eid.

Furthermore, the decision to extend metro services to commuters travelling between Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune has increased ridership considerably. The extension made it easier for citizens to visit various Ganesh pandals during the festive season, contributing to the surge in metro usage.

There are many prominent Ganesh pandals located near the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Therefore, footfalls were higher at the PMC metro station as compared to other metro stations. On Saturday, the PMC metro station recorded the highest footfalls with 41,475 passengers; followed by PCMC with 39,682 passengers; Ramwadi with 19,227 passengers; Deccan Gymkhana with 15,653 passengers; Pune Railway Station with 13,926 passengers; District Court with 13,761 passengers; and Vanaz with 11,982 passengers. On Saturday, the top 10 metro stations in terms of ridership were: PCMC, PMC, Bhosari, Pune Railway Station, Ramwadi, District Court, Vanaz, Deccan Gymkhana and Bhosari.

The record-breaking ridership on Saturday – the highest since the beginning of metro services - generated total revenue of ₹ 2,973,589. Line 1 (Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation/PCMC to District Court) and line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi) accounted for 94,848 and 148,587 passengers, respectively.

Hemant Sonawane, executive director (administration and public relations), said, “This is the third time Pune Metro has recorded its highest ridership. We expect to break the record again on the 10th day of Ganesh immersion (September 18) as Pune Metro will operate continuously for 24 hours starting from 6 am on September 17 till 6 am on September 18.”

Suvarna Shivekar, a resident of Wadgaon Sheri, said, “Since it was the weekend, we planned to visit the Ganesh pandals. We travelled from Ramwadi to PMC and it was a very good experience. Without any traffic congestion, we reached the PMC metro station in just 20 minutes. Last year, we used our car and faced parking issues. This year, without worrying about parking, we enjoyed visiting the pandals. Thanks to Pune Metro.”

Vivek N Bhide, a Pune resident, posted on the social media platform ‘X’ that what was once only limited to discussion has now become a reality for Punekars and that they are wholeheartedly embracing this world-class mode of transport, designed specifically for them.

The Pune Metro is running from 6 am to midnight between September 10 and 17. On the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, the Pune Metro will run continuously for 24 hours from 6 am on September 17 to 6 am the next day on September 18.
