What You Need to Know About Tahiti

M Swiet Productions/Getty Images

If a trip to Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia is on your travel radar, chances are you'll be heading there with someone special .

Nature seems to have custom-made these dreamy South Pacific islands for two. The scenery is spectacular, the water is crystal-clear, and those thatched-roof overwater bungalows rank among the planet's sexiest places to sleep.

And yet families will also find a trip to Tahiti to be a sun-filled (albeit pricey ) playground, as some resorts and islands have begun to cater to parents and children. Here's some facts about what you need to know as you begin planning your visit.

The 118 islands of French Polynesia (an autonomous nation with ties to France) are located in the middle of the South Pacific , about eight hours by air from Los Angeles and midway between Hawaii and Fiji .

Spread over two million square miles, they are divided into several groups. Tahiti, the largest island and home to the capital city, Papeete , is part of the most-visited group, the Society Islands, which also includes Moorea and Bora Bora .

More far-flung are the tiny coral atolls of the Tuamotu Islands, such as Fakarava and Tikehau, and the dramatic Marquesas Islands. Tourists rarely visit two additional groups, the Austral Islands and the Gambier Islands.

Tahiti is a tropical destination with abundant sunshine, year-round air and water temperatures of about 80 degrees, and two main seasons, summer and winter. The ideal time to visit is during the clear, dry winter months of May to October. Yet even during the more humid summer months of November to April, showers are mainly sporadic (typically late-afternoon and overnight) and there's usually plenty of sunshine.

Getting There

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the gateway to French Polynesia. The islands' official carrier, Air Tahiti Nui offers daily non-stops to Papeete's Faa'a Airport (PPT), while Air France, Air New Zealand, and Qantas fly several times a week. You can also fly to Papeete nonstop from Honolulu on a weekly Hawaiian Airlines flight.

Suggested Itineraries

With multiple combinations possible among the 15 or so islands with tourism infrastructure, which should you choose? It depends on your experience and interests.

First timers: On their virgin visit to French Polynesia, travelers typically stay for seven to 10 days and stick with a circuit of three islands: Tahiti, where you may have to stay overnight upon arrival or prior to departure, depending on flight times; Moorea, a lush, emerald-hued island located just a short flight or ferry ride away from Papeete; and Bora Bora, the crowning glory of the Society Islands with its magnificent Mt. Otemanu peak and world-famous lagoon.

Specialized interests: Repeat visitors, honeymooners, and scuba divers often bypass Tahiti and Moorea and head to islands a bit further afield.

A great combo for second-time visitors or romantics is Bora Bora, where the views never get old; Taha'a, located a short flight from Bora Bora with excellent pearl and vanilla farms; and Tikehau, Manihi or one of the other secluded Tuamotu atolls, where the main activities are snorkeling, sunning, and relaxation.

Divers typically head for the amazing coral reefs of Rangiroa, which is ranked as one of the world's great dive destinations. Adventure-seekers enjoy exploring the Marquesas, where ancient tribal lore and customs are commonplace.

Is Tahiti Expensive?

Yes, for a number of reasons. Almost everything except fresh seafood and tropical fruit has to be shipped in from a great distance - making food the most obvious expense. Add in the high cost of electricity and a currency tied to the euro, making the exchange pricey for Americans. Bora Bora and Taha'a resorts tend to be priciest, while those on Tahiti, Moorea, and the Tuamotus can be a third to a half less. To save, choose a beach bungalow over an overwater bungalow and look for a package with breakfast included. A variety of sources are now also offering package deals, that include air, accommodations, and sometimes even certain meals, making a visit more affordable than ever.

Do I Need a Visa?

No, for stays of 90 days or less, citizens of the United States and Canada need only a valid passport.

Is English Spoken?

Somewhat. Tahiti's two official languages are Tahitian and French, but you will find that most hotel employees speak English, as do people who work in shops or for tour companies.

Do They Use Dollars?

No. French Polynesia's official currency is the French Pacific Franc, abbreviated as XPF. You can exchange money at your resort and there are a few ATM machines on Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora. Some vendors in local handicrafts markets will accept U.S. dollars.

What Is the Electric Voltage?

You will find both 110 and 220 volts, depending on the hotel or resort. Bring an adapter set and a converter to make sure you're covered.

What Is the Time Zone?

It's the same as Hawaii: Three hours earlier than Pacific Standard Time and six hours earlier than Eastern Standard Time (adjusted to two hours and five hours, respectively, from November to March).

Do I Need Shots?

None are required for residents of North America, but making sure your tetanus vaccination is up to date is a good idea. Also, pack plenty of bug repellent, as Tahiti has its share of mosquitoes and other insects.

Which Islands Are Most Family-Friendly?

The Societies - Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora - where a number of resorts have added accommodations suited to families, as well as kids programs.

Can I Cruise the Islands?

Yes. Several ships visit the islands. They include the m/s Paul Gauguin , a 320-passenger luxury ship, offering varied itineraries within French Polynesia and the neighboring Cook Islands year-round; the Royal Princess , a 670-passenger cruise ship, offering 10-day roundtrip sailings from Papeete and 12-day cruises between Hawaii and Papeete; and the Aranui 3 , a combo freighter /passenger ship that makes scheduled two-week runs from Papeete to the Marquesas.

Queen of the Pacific

The heart and soul of the South Pacific, Tahiti is the largest in a chain of islands that make up French Polynesia. The name can either refer to the main island or the entire destination. Commonly referred to as The Islands of Tahiti , French Polynesia is a collection of 118 islands and atolls scattered across an impressive nautical surface area the size of Western Europe. Still, these tiny islands—many of which remain uninhabited—make up a total landmass of only 1,600 square miles (4,100 sq. km).

You may be wondering, where is Tahiti? The islands are situated halfway between Los Angeles, California and Sydney, Australia. They are in the same time zone as Hawaii and located just as far south of the equator as Hawaii is north. Since the word often conjures up visions of a distant, unspoiled paradise, many assume them to be far away; but in all reality, Tahiti is only eight hours from Los Angeles.

The island of Tahiti is divided into two parts: The larger portion to the northwest is known as Tahiti Nui, while the smaller, southeastern peninsula is known as Tahiti Iti. Tahiti Nui is dominated by three extinct volcanic mountains including Mount Orohena, the tallest in French Polynesia; Mount Aorai, known for its incredible views; and Le Diadème, which appears to crown the island as the rightful queen.

Papeete is a vibrant and multicultural city with busy boulevards and a bustling harbor. The downtown municipal market, Le Marché, is an exciting place to purchase all things Tahiti including vanilla beans, monoi oil and colorful pareos. Just down the street at Le Centre Vaima is the Robert Wan Pearl Museum, which is a great place to start if you're hoping to purchase a Tahitian black pearl during your stay. To live like a local, head to Vai'ete Square after sunset. This waterfront promenade comes to life at night when gourmet food trucks, Les Roulottes, open their windows to serve a range of affordable meals including Chinese food, French crépes, steak frites, fresh fish and pizza.

Celebration

Tahiti really is the hub of all cultural activity. Every July, the annual Heiva I Tahiti transforms the island into a spectacular celebration of Polynesian culture and dance. Year round, you can also catch an authentic Tahitian dance show at the InterContinental Resort every Friday and Saturday night. Permanent historical fixtures include the house of James Norman Hall, Point Venus, the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, the Paul Gauguin Museum, and the Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens. These can all be seen on a guided Circle Island Tour , or you can rent a car and explore the island at your leisure.

Final Impression

Often overlooked by travelers eager to experience the outer islands, Tahiti is more than just a means to an end. How much time you choose to spend here is up to you, but give yourself a chance to see everything the island has to offer—beyond the initial view from the plane.

Home to the capital city of Papeete, Tahiti is the economic center of French Polynesia. Since all flights arrive through Faa'a International Airport, your tailored Tahiti vacation will begin and end in Papeete. While you may be tempted to jet off immediately to the other islands, we recommend staying at least a day or two. Tahiti strikes an interesting contrast to some of the more quiet, secluded islands in the region; and with a selection of wonderful and convenient Tahiti resorts available, you will never regret staying.

Tahiti Accommodations

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Designed specifically for Polynesia, the Paul Gauguin is a deluxe vessel offering all-inclusive small-ship luxury to just 332 guests. Flawless, friendly service from a European-trained staff emulates the delightfully unhurried and unregimented Polynesian way of life. Spacious ocean-view staterooms, most with balconies or verandas, open to sweet-scented tropical breezes and lush island vistas. Fine international and French cuisine is served on an open-seating basis in three restaurants. Polynesia's translucent, shimmering aqua lagoons are begging to be explored and there is no better place to do so than from the Paul Gauguin's retractable watersports marina.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa

It is a perfect home base for exploring the city within easy walking distance of popular shops, restaurants, attractions, and cultural sites. As a city hotel without resort facilities, it is an excellent value option for those stopping over in Papeete before departing for neighboring islands.

Royal Tahitien

The Royal Tahitien is a small, Polynesian hotel with a laid-back, mid-century modern, retro island and a tropical garden setting at the edge of a black-sand beach. Within the hotel’s seven acres of delightful tropical gardens and koi ponds, you will discover a lovely pool and Jacuzzi framed by rock waterfalls. The simple, clean guest rooms are situated around the gardens and deliver excellent value.

tahiti tourism north america

Beyond the city atmosphere, Tahiti is also a scenic island with lush landscapes and large abounding waterfalls. Leave the more developed areas behind and you will find shady hiking trails, pleasant beaches and calm waters. This unique juxtaposition makes Tahiti one of the most diverse islands in French Polynesia. We recommend exploring these interior peaks and valleys on a guided hike or Jeep Safari tour.

Other popular activities include snorkeling, Jet Skiing and surfing. Experienced surfers should visit the famed Teahupo'o and bear witness to one of the world's most intense waves. Beginners can surf or take lessons at some of the more mellow beaches around the island. You can also enjoy a day of golfing at the Olivier Bréaud Golf Course, one of only two courses in French Polynesia.

Name: Kristin Carlson Title: Managing director Company, city: Tahiti Tourisme North America; Los Angeles, California First job: Account coordinator, The Fontayne Group Where to next: The Islands of Tahiti, of course!

A LITTLE BIT MORE

What actor or actress would play you in a movie of your life? I’ve been mistaken for Christina Applegate (the Kelly Bundy days), Kristin Chenoweth, Pink (trust me, I can’t sing) or Kelly Ripa. Kelly is probably the best bet!

What would you be doing professionally if you weren’t in your current industry? Toss up: private investigator or sports reporter

What is your favorite book, movie or television show? 1985’s Witness or Far from Heaven of 2002

What historical figure, dead or alive, would you love to have dinner with? I grew up on airplanes, and my dad’s aviation career (on the business side) allowed me to visit 60 countries by the time I was 18. Combine that with my fascination with mystery, and I’ll go with Amelia Earhart.

THE BUSINESS

What is your most recent project, and what was the inspiration behind it? As of January, our U.S. office, previously Tahiti Tourisme United States, became Tahiti Tourisme North America. We are now responsible for arrivals to The Islands of Tahiti not only from the United States but also Canada and Mexico. We need to immerse ourselves in these two markets and once again make the all-important trade connections. The inspiration was our previous success in the United States, the largest market of travelers to the destination, and to take advantage of our economies of scale and expertise.

What is your favorite aspect of the job? The community of those who work for and cherish The Islands of Tahiti is like no other. I’ve been in other companies in my long tenure in the travel industry, and in some roles I’ve come in contact with people for whom it’s “just a job.” This is not the case with the Tahiti travel industry. There’s a passion you don’t see in other areas of the world or other companies. Even competitors come together as colleagues for the greater good of the country and to share its unique characteristics. With the effect of COVID-19 on the travel industry, this has kept me positive and waking (almost) every day with a smile.

What’s the biggest business risk you’ve ever taken? I left one job after more than a decade for a new opportunity at another company with a higher title and salary. Ultimately the division folded, and I was laid off. Yet that time of looking for a job brought me to Tahiti Tourisme, the opportunity of a lifetime. It never gets old telling people what I do, and they say, “That sounds like the best job in the world!”

Who is someone you admire professionally in the travel industry? I’ve had the pleasure of working with Diane Moore for more than 20 years, during our time together at Crystal Cruises and when I joined Tahiti Tourisme in 2011, when she was at the helm of Paul Gauguin Cruises. Her intelligence, warmth and spirit are evident in everything she does. She served as a role model, personally and professionally.

AS A TRAVELER

Tell us about a travel nightmare: In 1986 I was traveling home from a summer vacation in Greece and Yugoslavia with my brother. All Pan Am flights from Athens to JFK were full, so we took a flight on Saudia, with a lengthy layover in Jeddah. They weren’t used to seeing female, blonde, American teenagers at JED and whisked us to a private room and found us the first flight out. In hindsight it was an experience, not a nightmare.

Share a comical travel experience: When I was 6 years old, my mother and I went to London for a weekend trip. At Heathrow, my mother went to the counter to get us food, telling me to sit at the table and wait, keeping an eye on me from the line. I kept switching tables, and it took her a while to realize I was not familiar with the European custom of communal tables, and every time another diner sat at my table, I moved. We get a chuckle out of it to this day!

What is your preferred method of travel — planes, trains, automobiles, cruise ships — and why? I love planes, and given my father’s role with Pan American Airways, I acquired a taste for caviar at a young age! I also got the cruise bug quite early. Interline discounts were quite generous in the 1970s and ’80s, and my dad took my brother and me on incredible trips, planting my love of ocean travel which led to my 13-year career at Crystal Cruises.

What has been the best example of customer service you’ve experienced during your travels? I traveled to Tahiti to celebrate my 50th birthday with a group of family and friends. We booked a day of snorkeling with rays and sharks and gourmet local lunch on a private motu. In addition to Hinano, Tahiti’s national beer, and Champagne, Moana Adventure Tours served a delicious frosted chocolate cake. How do you keep a chocolate cake from melting in the middle of summer on a white-sand beach in Bora-Bora? That’s customer Service!

Slow_Main Hero.jpg

If ever there was a dream location to drop into for two blissed-out weeks and to fully immerse yourself in a new culture, it’s on The Islands of Tahiti. Surrounded by the crystalline waters of fabulous blue lagoons and lush landscapes with volcanic mountains rising up out of the sea, it’s also home to rich Polynesian history and delicious cuisine. The natural wonders and way of life make this region a relaxing yet stimulating place to try out the “slow travel” trend, the art of making time to truly take in all that a place has to offer.

During this 14-day tour of Huahine and Moorea you’ll delve into the fascinating culture of these two naturally stunning islands, and come away with a deep appreciation for the laid-back lifestyle on each. Learn to live like a local over the course of a week on Huahine, one of the Islands of Tahiti’s best-kept secrets, then head to Moorea, the second largest of the Windward Islands, where the writer Herman Melville found inspiration for his 1847 novel, Omoo. Today, visitors continue to marvel at the island’s magnificent villages and the local customs that have been kept alive for centuries.

More About The Islands of Tahiti

Officially known as French Polynesia, honeymooners, romantics and adventurers alike are drawn to the Islands of Tahiti. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, French Polynesia consists of 118 islands stretching across more than 1,000 miles of ocean. The islands were formed by volcanic activity that gave rise to lush green, majestic mountains surrounded by coral reefs and clear turquoise water – ideal for snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding or parasailing. Some of the most popular islands for visitors are in the archipelago of the Society Islands and include Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha'a and Tetiaroa. Also popular are Tikehau and Rangiroa located in the Tuamotus.

Papeete, located on Tahiti Island, is the capital city. Fa'a'a International Airport is only eight hours from Los Angeles by daily nonstop flights. It's also on the same side of the International Date Line as California. Overwater bungalows are popular resort accommodations and rejuvenating spa treatments are coveted activities. Experience the warmth of the Polynesian people and explore island culture through their music and dance. Stroll on the coral sand beaches or relax in a hammock. Visit the art galleries, shops and markets for jewelry, crafts, sarongs, monoi oil, and more and don't forget to return home with a Tahitian Black Pearl or two. With temperate weather, the Islands of Tahiti are truly a paradise where you will be "Embraced by Mana" – a life force and spirit that surrounds and connects all living things.

5 ways to explore the real Islands of Tahiti

5 ways to explore the real Islands of Tahiti

The Islands of Tahiti are often wrongly written off as a destination of solely sun, sand and sea – every travel cliché in the book has been used to describe this jagged collection of 118 islands and atolls. But it’s a spot that deserves so much more than platitudes; from immersive guesthouse stays to authentic cultural experiences, here’s how you can discover the real Islands of Tahiti.

Step off the typical tourist trail

There’s no denying that Bora Bora and Tahiti are incredible spots; their coral reefs teeming with wildlife, sleeping volcanoes, and otherworldly coastline draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. But beautiful as they are, they’re just a fraction of the 118 Islands of Tahiti , which are scattered through 2,000 kilometres of the South Pacific like so many pieces of coral flung into the waves. There are five distinct groups; the Society Islands, where you’ll find tourist hotspots Bora Bora and Tahiti; the Tuamotu Archipelago, home to deep lagoons and wild waves; the Gambier Islands, is a spot where pristine pearls are farmed and historic buildings take on their iridescent shine; the remote Austral Islands, where whales frolic before ancient cliffs; and the Marquesas Islands, with its black sand beaches, green forests and mountain peaks bursting through soft cloud. It would take a lifetime to explore them all, but the Marquesas Islands are a good place to start. Travel from Nuku Hiva, the largest island which is said to be the ‘big house’ of God in local mythology, to the smallest inhabited island Tahuata, where artisans have created intricate rosewood carvings and brewed perfumes for thousands of years. Take in the lush greenery, countless archaeological sites and ancient Tiki statues of Hiva Oa, the little villages and huge columns bearing the names of famous warriors in Ua Pou and Ua Huka, where you can join goats and wild horses in exploring the crescent-shaped coastline.

Island-hop to your heart’s content with a private yacht charter

It would be impossible to discover all of The Islands of Tahiti in a single trip, but there’s one way to tick a good number of islands off your wishlist without relinquishing ontrol to a tour guide or joining a cruise – and that’s with a private yacht charter. A professional skipper may take the helm, but you’re still the master of your fate when you climb aboard a bespoke catamaran for a jaunt through the smooth waters of the South Pacific. Whether a romantic honeymoon trip or an action-packed getaway with family and friends, yacht charter means you set the pace and, most importantly, the destinations, granting the opportunity to explore the lesser-known corners of the Islands of Tahiti with ease. Design your dream diving trip from the decks of the small 4-berth Niyati Croisiere-Plongee, bask beneath the bright white sails of Huahine Voile, or drift serenely into an ocean sunset with Dream Yacht Charter .

5 ways to explore the real Islands of Tahiti

Experience a traditional welcome with a guesthouse stay

Sustainable travel doesn’t begin and end with climate-friendly transport and recycling – one major aspect of responsible tourism that’s all too often overlooked is the impact your visit has on the local community. Small decisions, such as having supper in a family-owned restaurant or booking an activity through an independent local guide, can have a massive effect on the communities you’re visiting. But they’re not just good for the local economy – foregoing the typical tourist route and seeking out local foods, activities and experiences will make for an altogether richer and more rewarding holiday. One of the best ways to discover a more authentic side to The Islands of Tahiti is to skip over grand hotels and imported luxury in favour of booking a stay in a guesthouse. Also known as pensions these lodgings are found all over the islands, from Raiatea’s Chambre D’hôtes Temehani, a bright wooden bungalow steps away from a shimmering sea, to the smart Le Coconut Lodge in Rangiroa’s tropical coconut grove. Usually family-owned, they’re an immersive (and more affordable) way to see the islands and bring you into contact with those who know the area best. Here, you’ll find communal tables groaning beneath the weight of traditional dishes, the insider’s lowdown on the best beaches, activities and events on the island, and that world-famous welcome. The people of The Islands of Tahiti have been named the friendliest in the world, and after a few days in one of the pensions you’ll understand why.

5 ways to explore the real Islands of Tahiti

Plunge into a world of outdoor adventure

As with any island group, the ocean is held in reverence in The Islands of Tahiti and so activities such as diving and snorkelling become almost mystical, an entry into something sacred rather than a simple holiday pastime. Swim with the turtles who bury their eggs in the sand of deserted archipelagos, go whale-watching off the island of Rurutu to witness majestic humpback whales on their return journey from the frozen Antarctic to birth and raise their young in the warm South Pacific, or kayak through a tranquil cove to spot darting clownfish, manta rays and sharks beneath the surface. On land, intrepid hikes such as the family-friendly Papenoo Valley trek into the (thankfully dormant) volcanic crater of Mt. Orohena and the trail to Moorea’s crashing Afareaitu Waterfall will have your muscles burning and your camera roll full of spectacular views. Thrillseekers, meanwhile, should fasten themselves in for a zip-lining adventure high above the trees with Tiki Parc Moorea . Mountain bikes are a great way of covering ground, as the smaller islands can be explored in a day’s ride, and a horseback canter along the beaches and through the valleys of the islands would be the perfect end to the afternoon’s adventures.

5 ways to explore the real Islands of Tahiti

Embrace cultural traditions in The Islands of Tahiti

Around 4000 BC, the first seafarers pulled their boats ashore on The Islands of Tahiti after a journey only guided by the stars, the birds and the ocean currents. Today their spirit of discovery and determination still moves through the islands as surely as any tide, and despite centuries of colonialism, the islands have kept alive a strong and distinct cultural heritage. The concept of Mana (an almost untranslatable idea of power and magnificence) is expressed through music and dance; attend a festival or gathering and watch as performers practise traditional moves such as tamure (shaking hips) to the rhythm beat out on the pahu (drums made from wood and sharkskin) to tell ancient stories and welcome newcomers. Tattoos also hold great cultural significance, and for centuries skin adorned with sacred creatures and recurring patterns has signified strength and beauty. Traditional crafts are still practised, and make for a memorable souvenir; perhaps pick up a basket of plaited reeds from the skilful woman weavers of the Austral Islands or an intricately carved wooden bowl from the craftsmen of the Marquesas Islands . Find a knowledgeable guide to introduce you to the traditions, customs and culture of these little atolls, and you’ll leave with a much better understanding of what makes The Islands of Tahiti so special.

Why choose The Islands of Tahiti

Much more than a tropical paradise, The Islands of Tahiti are islands of romance, myths and legends. A wealth of archeological sites bear witness to the importance of the ancestral maohi culture in a land which has always attracted poets, artists and writers, as well as its share of whale hunters, traders, deserters, sailors and explorers. Today, it is tourists and hoteliers who bring fame and fortune to The Islands of Tahiti.

For the first time since 2018, Tahiti Tourisme North America (TTNA) is bringing back its Tahiti Receptions program in eight cities across Canada and the U.S. Each event, which is only open to advisors who have registered for the Tahiti Specialist Program, features a half day of destination training, as well as networking opportunities.

Each Reception features two tracks.

For entry level advisors in the Tahiti Specialist Program (TSP, an enhanced destination review is provided offering a deep dive into The Islands of Tahiti to emphasize cultural highlights, activities, products, niche markets, itinerary building, and the benefits of the TSP.

Certified Tahiti Specialists (Levels 1-3) can skip the destination review and instead register for pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings with participating partners to discuss potential business or a specific booking or client.

For Canadian advisors attending the Receptions in either Vancouver or Toronto, it will also be their first opportunity to meet The Islands of Tahiti’s new Trade & Marketing Associate for Canada, Gail Lea Scullion.

To attend a Tahiti Reception, advisors must register for the Tahiti Specialist Program and reach “entry level” by completing two e-learning modules. A “2023 Tahiti Receptions” registration button will appear on the advisor’s profile page once the minimum requirement has been met.

Dates and locations for the Tahiti Receptions are as follows:

April 25 – Toronto (Doubletree by Hilton Downtown) April 27 – Vancouver (Hyatt Regency) May 2 – New York City (Ease 1345) May 4 – Chicago (Loews Chicago O’Hare) May 9 – Atlanta (Marriott Atlanta Buckhead) May 11 – Dallas (The Westin Dallas Downtown) May 16 – Seattle (Seattle Marriott Bellevue) May 18 – Bay Area (Hyatt Regency Santa Clara)

Essential Guide to Visiting Tahiti: What to Know Before You Go

Before you go to Tahiti, here’s what you need to know.

before you go to tahiti, waterfalls,

For most people, visiting The Islands of Tahiti is a “bucket-list” destination. I was lucky to check this one off my list relatively early, when I was invited on a  Tahiti Tourisme press trip. For years, I carried constructed notions of what Tahiti would be like, only to find out upon my arrival that I was quite wrong; but as is turns out, having those myths busted turned out to be a good thing – a very good thing.

before you go to Tahiti, bora bora, lagoon tour

Before You Go to Tahiti Tips

It’s not just bora bora.

Prior to my visit, I thought Tahiti and Bora Bora were one and the same, when in fact there actually 118 islands making up the Islands of Tahiti, each with their own unique quality. I understand the desire to see Bora Bora in all it’s French Polynesian glory. It’s everything you’ve ever seen in pictures and so much more. But when you go, take the time to investigate other islands, like Taha’a , you would be surprised to find out I’m sure that well maybe not as famous there are just as beautiful, and more affordable options.  Before you book, consider splitting your stay between at least three different islands.

I spent time on the big island of  Tahiti , as well as  Bora Bora ,  and   Moorea . I fully expected Bora Bora to be my favourite, but it was Moorea that stole my heart. Called “The Magical Island,” Moorea is the perfect mix of blue lagoons, lush green vegetation, Polynesian hospitality, and French culture; essentially, it’s paradise. Of course, it probably helped that the  Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora  was an absolutely flawless resort to take it all in.  The trip left me insatiable, and I’ve been positively obsessed about getting to know even more of Tahiti, and I’m feeling the call of  Rangiroa  and the  Marquesas   for my next visit.

before you go to Tahiti, Moorea, Sofitel

Transportation between islands is easy with Air Tahiti. Pro tip: get in line early so you can get a window seat to capture that perfect Instagram shot. Boat transportation is also available, and while it may take you a bit longer to get to your destination, you won’t regret the time you spend taking in the natural beauty around you.

before you go to Tahiti, book a window seat

An Overwater Bungalow May Not Be for You

You’ve probably built a magazine-worthy idea in your head about arriving in Tahiti where you will stay in an overwater bungalow. But let me pull out a reality check: an overwater bungalow in Tahiti starts at roughly $1000 CAD a night, with the higher end resorts running between $2000 to $3000 per night. If you have the bank for that, then book away. And if you’re looking for a roomie for the week, I’m all in.

before you go to Tahiti, overwater bungalows, how expensive are overwater bungalows

The reality is that many people scrimp and save to book an overwater bungalow and then have no money left to actually do anything. I’ve stayed in an overwater bungalow and while beautiful, yes, I can also assure you that after a day, it’s just a room.

Look into booking other rooms at the resort which cost less but still offer the same amazing amenities.  The Pearl Beach Resort and Spa  in Bora Bora has bungalows on the beach and those with garden views that are identical on the inside to those on the water. Added bonus: you’ll have some coin left for other things.

It’s Only For Lovers

Sure, sun, sand and surf are conducive to a little romance, but they are also three things your kids love too. Why would you deny them this? Tahiti and the islands ARE for kids!

The lack of furry or costumed characters walking around signing autograph books is refreshing and brings family travel to new levels of sophistication. You won’t find water parks on resorts, and resort kids’ clubs will be sparse, but what you will find is the opportunity to try unique activities with your kids and create lasting memories.

before you go to Tahiti

Highly recommended for families: book a va’a lesson. A va’a is an outrigger canoe and a national sport and obsession in Tahiti. Every person in a va’a must work together to get anywhere, so it’s a great exercise in family team building.

book a va'a tour in tahiti

And be sure to bring your snorkeling gear. The waters surrounding Tahiti are teeming with life. From just about anywhere, visitors can wade into the water and see spectacular sea life. There is no better place to introduce your kids to the wonders of the ocean.

before you go to Tahiti, snorkel

It’s Expensive

Accommodations.

There is no doubt Tahiti can be expensive, but there are many great options for accommodations that won’t cost you your retirement savings. But don’t panic; even budget-conscious options are far from “hostel with a backpack’ levels of accommodation.

before you go to Tahiti

The  Le Meridien Tahiti , conveniently located near the Papeete airport, offers a room with two queen beds for roughly $350 a night; a third of the cost of an overwater bungalow. Still making you break out in a cold sweat? No worries. Tahiti is well known for the large number of family pensions it offers throughout the islands. At around $150 a night, with some places including breakfast in the price, your dream trip just turned into a reality.

The Food Truck craze is not just a North American phenomenon, and Tahiti boasts a huge assortment of Roulettes (French for food truck), most notably at  Vaiete Square  near the ferry to Moorea. Go for the gourmet food and budget-friendly pricing, but stick around for the cool vibe and dining under the stars.

before you go to Tahiti, budget dining

I recommend you also check out  Little Bangkok , a food truck in Puna’auia, not far from the Merdien Tahiti. I’m still thinking about the delicious Pad Thai I had there.

MORE ON VISITING THE ISLANDS OF TAHITI ON A BUDGET HERE!

It’s Boring

For some people the thought of lying on a lounge chair with an umbrella drink is a form of torture. Do an image search of Tahiti and it’s not hard to see why some people may think that’s all there is to do.

But adrenaline junkies can take heart: You can take surfing lessons , hike through the jungle to secluded falls on Tahiti, snorkel with sharks and rays in Bora Bor a , and  ATV up practically vertical terrain in Moorea .  There’s plenty to keep an adventurer busy.

before you go to Tahiti, adventure activities, waterfalls

The Polynesian people, aside from being incredibly warm and inviting to guests, also have a fascinating culture. Be sure to take the time to immerse yourself in it.

In Tahiti, book a full day excursion with Ia Ora Na Tahiti Expeditions .   The owner, Teuai Oliver, is nothing short of a superman, who can lift large rocks, climb impossibly tall coconut trees and whip up a killer Poisson Cru in a single bound.

before you go to Tahiti, tours to book, island of Tahiti

Also on the island of  Tahiti, you’ll find no warmer welcome than with Tupuna Kultur . A completely immersive experience, guests here will learn about Tahitian dance, music, taurumi massage , food, basket weaving, and lei making. I’m still trying to figure out how to make wearing a hei (aka floral crown) acceptable in my daily life at home.

It’s Hard to Get To

There is no doubt that getting to Tahiti takes some time, but it’s not hard or complicated. Simply get yourself to Los Angeles from anywhere in North America, and then hop on an  Air Tahiti Nui  flight.

before you go to Tahiti, how to get there, Air Tahiti Nui, flight time

The flight from Los Angeles is long at eight hours, but most definitely a pleasure on Air Tahiti Nui . The staff on board welcome you with French Polynesian hospitality, making the journey there delightful. If you can, I recommend booking a night flight. I had night flights to and from Tahiti and I blissfully slept for most of it.

I think most surprising to me now, as I reflect on what I’ve learned about The Islands of Tahiti, is that it doesn’t have to be a once in a lifetime trip. The Islands of Tahiti are not hard to get to, they  can be done on a budget, and there’s enough to do in order to easily justify a return trip (or two!)

The food truck are Roulottes, not roulettes. Also, check out home rentals via VRBO and Airbnb. There are some good deals for both Tahiti and Moore’s.

I went to Tahiti in 1992 for 7.5 weeks. I visited 6 different islands, travelled by bus, plane & freighter. It was awesome ! I dream of returning some day, this time with my family. I went to Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Maupiti, Huahine, Manihi & Rangiroa. They all had their own charms.

LOVED IT!!!
