    Here, There & Gone

Guide to Traveling to Perisher to Ski or Snowboard

The go-to snow resort in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains , Skiers and Snowboarders from all over Australia flock to Perisher each and every winter to get their annual snow fix.

Part of the appeal of Perisher is that it is one of Australia’s largest snow resorts, with over 1,245 hectares of skiable area between the four interlinked sections Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Guthega and Smiggins Holes. All feature a variety of terrain to cater for every level of ability.

Each year I try to dust off my snowboard and head down to Perisher for at least a couple of days to get my own annual snow fix in so here is my advice if you are planning on heading to Perisher for the first time or at least the first time in a while.

    Where Is Perisher?

Perisher is located in the picturesque Snowy Mountains of New South Wales , Australia, in the Kosciuszko National Park.

From Sydney, Perisher is about a 6-hour drive depending on the traffic, which can build up on Friday afternoons evenings as people flock from the city to the mountain for a weekend getaway over the winter. Particularly on the Monaro Highway section.

From Canberra, it will take you a little over two and a half hours to drive to Perisher, and from the nearest town, Jindabyne, the resort is about 30 minutes drive away along Kosciuszko Road.

Just keep in mind that if you are planning on driving all the way up to the resort, parking is limited, so if you get there later in the day, you might need to park further down the mountain (don’t stress too much the resort does offer busses to link all the parking areas).

You will also need to carry snow chains if you don’t drive a 4WD or AWD car (in fact, it might be a good idea to have them regardless). Additionally, you will need to purchase a National Park pass to drive into the Kosciuszko National Park.

Where To Stay When Going To Perisher

You’ve got a couple of options for where to stay when going to Perisher. You can either choose to stay on the snow within the resort itself at The Perisher Valley Hotel or back down in Jindabyne.

Just keep in mind that rooms in the resort are quite limited, so they are obviously very expensive. But you do have the advantage of not having to drive up the mountain early to get first lifts.

Alternatively, staying in Jindabyne is a very popular option, especially if you aren’t going to the Snowy Mountains to spend your time exclusively at Perisher.

Here are a couple of my recommendations for places to stay in and around Jindabyne.

    • Banjo Paterson Inn – Recently refurbished, this is a really good option if you are travelling with a small group of friends. The pub downstairs is massively convenient after a full day on the slopes.
    • Lake Jindabyne Hotel – A solid alternative if Banjo’s is booked out; it hasn’t been refurbished (yet) but offers similar convenience.
    • Discovery Parks – Jindabyne – A better option if you are travelling as a family and looking for something a little more self-contained.
    • Panorama Jindabyne – Offers more of your typical hotel experience, better suited for a more quiet, relaxing trip.
    • Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa – The ultimate luxury experience in the NSW Snowy Mountains. Nothing else needs to be said.

How To Get To And From Perisher

You have three options to get to and from Perisher, two of which involve driving.

As I mentioned earlier, you can drive all the way up to the resort. But that does require a National Park pass , snow chains, and parking is limited.

The Skitube is a very good alternative. Located in Bullocks Flat along the Alpine Way, the Skitube is a cog railway service connecting the traditional alpine snow line below to the Perisher resort.

This allows you to access Perisher without having to drive on potentially snow-covered/icy roads and not have to worry about fitting snow chains.

The car park at Bullocks Flat is also considerably bigger than the one at the top of the mountain, so you will have a better chance of securing a good spot, but it still does fill up over the weekends during peak snow season.

Lastly, bus services have recently been added to link Jindabyne with Perisher.

    Food Options In Perisher

One thing I will mention, straight off the bat is that food in Perisher is going to be expensive. Very expensive.

There are cafeteria-style restaurants set up across the resort, and the food they offer is actually very good. But it will be one of the most expensive parts of your trip.

Plan ahead and bring some of your own snacks, so you don’t need to spend too much money. You’ll burn a tonne of calories out on the slopes, so you will be hungry.

One thing you can’t go past, though, is Li’l Orbits. Located in the Perisher Skitube Terminal, these tiny warm donuts at the end of a massive day on the mountain might just be the greatest thing ever.

Where Do You Get Snow Gear For Perisher

Perisher has its own snow gear shops and rentals on-site, located underneath the main resort building (not to be confused with the Skitube terminal). If you are staying onsite at Perisher, this could be a very good option for you.

That said, if you are staying in Jindabyne, you can save a bit of money on the rental prices and probably end up with slightly better gear. There are a couple of snow gear stores around the town, but I would suggest either ESS Boardstore or Larry Adler  for the best service and friendly advice.

Does Perisher Offer Ski or Snowboard Lessons

If you’ve never skied or snowboarded before, then I’d strongly recommend you get lessons.

The good thing about a trip to Perisher is that you can organise your ski or snowboard lessons right there at the resort.

Perisher (and Smiggins) offer some of the gentlest slopes of all of the Australian snowfields, and that can really help when you are learning to ski, not so much for snowboarding, though.

No matter what level you think you are at, you’ll find an appropriate lesson at Perisher. The best part about learning to ski or snowboard in Australia is that there are people of all ages visiting the snow for the first time, so you won’t feel out of place.

What To Do In The Evenings At Perisher

If you feel like you haven’t had enough time on the slopes during the day, Perisher offers night skiing and snowboarding on Tuesday and Saturday nights so you can get those extra runs in under lights.

It’s only Front Valley that is open, but it’s a very different experience than during the day, and the crowds are typically less, which is always handy during the peak of the snow season.

However, after a big day of snowboarding or skiing at Perisher, most people tend to find that there is nothing better than chilling out and sharing stories of your best runs or showcasing your bumps and bruises.

If you are staying on snow in the Perisher resort, there are a handful of restaurants and bars that you can enjoy throughout the resort. Snow Gums Restaurant at the Perisher Valley Hotel is the premier option. While JAX Bar and The Man From Snowy River Hotel are also very good options after the lifts stop for the day.

While down at Jindabyne, you are spoilt for choice; my quick picks are the Banjo Patterson Inn or Lake Jindabyne Hotel . But for a full recommendations, check out this post.

Spending Time in Snowy Mountains Before or After

I know that the number one reason for heading to Perisher is to spend time in the snow. However, if you are planning on spending a week in the snow, you give yourself a day somewhere in the middle to rest up and recover, especially if you are learning to ski or snowboard.

Not only will it make a big difference to how quickly you learn, but there is so much to see and do in the region. It would be a shame to miss it.

I’ve detailed everything that the Snowy Mountains region has to offer in this post.

The best thing about Perisher is the amount of snow coverage it gets. Being at a higher elevation in the mountains, the whole resort tends to benefit from early snowfalls and artificial snow production earlier in the season (June) over some of the other resorts.

For those experienced snowboarders and skiers, the expanse of the resort and the variety of runs will allow you to get away from the crowds and the learners.

My best suggestion for a busy day at Perisher is to head directly up the Skitube (either from Bullocks Flat or Perisher Valley) to Blue Cow. You’ll be able to get some early runs in before the crowd builds up, and once they do head over to Guthega.

If you are heading to the snow for the first time and not sure if you should learn to ski or snowboard, let me help you out.

Learning to ski is easier. You can learn the basics of skiing in as little as a day, and you’ll be able to get down most slopes, albeit slowly. However, if you decide you want to pursue skiing more regularly, then you need to relearn everything slightly differently so that you can really make the most of your skis on any terrain.

Learning to snowboard is a little more difficult. It’ll take you about three days to get comfortable on a snowboard. But once you’ve learnt, there is nothing else left to learn. The rest is just confidence in using the skills you’ve developed on any terrain.

For more information about Perisher, visit the resort’s website.

The Ultimate Guide to Perisher - Australia's Largest Ski and Snowboard Resort

    Perisher Resort

    Image: Instagram / Perisher_resort

You’ve probably clicked on this blog for one of two reasons, the first, you’re heading to Mt Perisher this year (we’re jealous) and need a run-down of what to know or secondly, you just love the snow (like us) and what to know everything about it. Either way, we are here to guide you with the best tips and tricks to getting the most out of Perishers Ski Season.

Perisher is a collection of four mountains combined as one in the Snowy Mountains - Perisher Valley, Mount Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega. It’s the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, two and a half times the size of Thredbo and three times the size of Falls Creek for reference - so you’ll definitely need to pack your bags for a few days if you want to ski every slope the mountain has to offer.

Perisher Top Tips - How to Have an Amazing Experience

    Perisher Snow

    Image: Instagram / jamesdanielbuckle

    Early or Late Lunch

The slopes and especially popular lunch spots can get packed during the lunchtime rush, to avoid this by having an early or late lunch. That way there is no crazy long lines you have to deal with and can enjoy a relaxing feast or coffee with no fuss, and have more time out on the snow.

    Buy Your Own Snow Gear

A different tactic to what most people think, but it saves a lot of time and money in the long-run. Although it may be expensive at the start buying snowboards , skis , jackets , boots and everything else needed for the slopes, however purchasing your own gear from a store like Auski, not only will you get a good deal, you’ll get to bypass all the faffing around in the rental stores. As an added bonus, you will feel comfortable and stylish in an outfit you choose, so invest in snow gear as it will last you many years and if you’re a frequent visitor, may end up saving you money.

    Reload Last Year’s Lift Pass

Only helpful if you have previously been to Mt Perisher, but find your old card, log onto the Perisher dashboard and reload this year’s ride days. In doing this ahead of time, you’ll get an early bird discount, avoid paying for the cost of the card again, and you get to skip those lines.

How Much is The Perisher Ski Tube?

Adult Skitube Open Return - $95

Child Skitube Open Return - $51

    Over 65’s Skitube Open Return - $77

You may be thinking why take the ski tube when you can easily drive up the mountain. However, taking the tube you avoid paying the national park entry fee and it saves you a crazy amount of time trying to find a park and let me tell you the parking bays on a popular day is not a fun time. So, trust us and get on the ski tube and skip all the fuss, being dropped off right at Blue Cow terminal.

    Perisher Night Skiing

Night skiing and boarding occurs on Tuesday all season and Saturday only in July and August; from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm on the Village Eight Express! It’s a one-of-a-kind experience and worthwhile doing while you’re there.

Perisher Accommodation – The Best Place to Stay at Perisher

Booking accommodation can always be tricky and you should get it organised early. There are various options around that give you different access to different parts of the resort. Remember, there are different mountains and endless trails and runs so do your research before you book.

    Matterhorn Lodge – Perisher Valley

A family-friendly lodge located just minutes from the Perisher Quad Chair. Ski-in, ski-out is an incredible factor that you need to take into consideration, going back to your room for a mid-day break for some R&R is necessary when skiing the slopes all day long - what easier way to do it by skiing off the slopes straight to your front door. Equipped with a large guest lounge including a bar and games room, breakfast and dinner included – what else could you ask for!

The Perisher Manor - Perisher Valley

If you want to be first on the mountain going down untouched powdery slopes, then the Perisher Manor is for you. Located in the heart of the mountain it’s a quality ski-in ski-out hotel, right across from the Village 8 Express Chairlift and Perisher Express Quad Chairlift. Perfect location for families as meeting points for lessons and kids club drop off is opposite the hotel. Perisher Manor is home to ‘The Pub’, the largest public bar and food court located on the mountain and an incredible location for lunch or a drink or two.

    Kosciuszko Tourist Park - Jindabyne

If you are wanting to stay off the mountain to save some cash, then Kosciuszko Tourist Park is for you! Only a 20-minute drive to Mount Perisher snow resort, this hotel offers free parking, shared lounge and kitchen area; highly recommended to couples.

Altitude – The Lodge Smiggins – Smiggin Holes, near Perisher Front Valley

A ‘home away from home’ stay, ideal for comfort and convenience for you and your family. Located a short walk from the Perisher ski lifts and bus stops, making it easy to access Perisher Front Valley via the free shuttle bus. The Altitude is known for their 3-4 course dinner menu and affordable wine selection. They have a variety of rooms up for offer and include a kid’s zone, with a PlayStation, board games and movies; allowing for the parents to kick back and enjoy their time away.

    High Ground Coffee Bar

    Image: Instagram/ highgroundcoffeebar

Perisher boasts an equally impressive food and drink offering to match the high calibre skiing and snowboarding scene and below are some of our tried and tested recommendations.

    Sundeck for Apres ski

The perfect ski-in ski-out spot located halfway up the mountain making it the perfect place to drop in for a drink, a game of pool or some live music. Sundeck offers a variety of drinks from beer, wine and spirits, and are also known for their 40 different types of schnapps. We recommend trying the ‘tasting platter’ - you’ll be served 5 different shots in test tubes (takes us back to our high school science days).

    High Ground Coffee Bar

Get in early for your coffee hit before the lifts open! Recently opened in 2017, this caffeine hub is tucked behind the Manor Hotel. It has all your breakfast and lunch favourites from eggs benedict, Canadian waffles, burgers, hearty pies and so much more.

    Mid-Perisher Centre at Mid-station

Famously known for their ‘deluxe’ hot chocolates, this family-owned restaurant is just off the Home Trail from Blue Cow. If you’re looking for a naughty treat on the way home then the delicious hot chocolate with marshmallow snowmen, Toblerone and Flake are just what you need. But wait there’s more, adults can add Frangelico or Schnapps as a reward for their hard day skiing the slopes.

    Brunelli's Café

Look no further, your favourite Italian café is at the slopes, tucked away in the Perisher Centre. A perfect pick-me-up for coffee lovers, grab and go treats are available. The café is known on the mountain for outstanding customer service from the owner Bruno, a previous ski instructor at Perisher so any questions you have, he is the man to go too.

    Avalanche Cafe

An outdoor café located at the bottom of Pretty Valley ski run, this is the perfect stop on the mountain as it provides lots of outdoor seating, good tunes and magnificent views. A convenient and easy place for lunch for families, kids can still build snowmen while you can put your feet up and enjoy a sausage roll or pie.

    Perisher Attractions

    Spa/massages

Mountain Spa is located in the Man from Snowy River Hotel. An incredible facility with relaxing treatments from massages, facial therapy, a hair salon, nail spa, tanning room and incorporating AlpineX fitness with yoga & personal training studio. This wellness studio will have you switched off from the outside world within seconds.

    Peak Music Festival

The Peak Festival is a 4-day music event held on the long weekend of June. It features local and international acts performing across 10 stages: with cosy lounges, sightseeing lift rides, kids’ entertainment, and much more. An amazing range of music and entertainment, a great way to celebrate the opening of the season.

At Guthega, the  Guthega Inn  is the spot for lunch, with lots of cosy places on the mountain for hot chocolate and coffee.

There are plenty of accommodation options right across Perisher Valley, Guthega and Smiggin Holes, from lodges and chalets to hotels and apartments. Many, like  Perisher Manor  and the  Marritz Hotel , are close to the lifts so you can strap your skis on at the door and ski in, ski out. Many skiers choose to stay in Jindabyne and drive into the resort, which takes around 30 minutes, or catch the  Skitube  from Bullocks Flat.

    Hiking & mountain biking

You’ll discover great walking tracks in the fresh mountain air, from alpine trails in the UNESCO-protected Biosphere Reserve to paths through summer wildflowers, snow gums and striking rock formations.

The Porcupine Walk winds from Perisher Valley Reservoir through snow grass and snow gums to The Porcupines, huge granite boulders where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Thredbo Valley and beyond.

Ride the relaxed 4km ride around Perisher village or take the more challenging 20km return ride from Perisher to Charlotte Pass , where you can bike and hike up Mount Kosciuszko. Mountain bikes can be ridden as far as Rawson Pass, where there are bike stands and you can walk the 1.4km to Australia’s rooftop.

Pristine waters from melting snow caps flow each spring into rivers and lakes teeming with jumping trout. The crystal-clear waters of the Snowy, Thredbo and Eucumbene rivers meet in Lake Jindabyne, which is a short drive east from Perisher.

    Getting there

Perisher is a 5.5-hour drive from Sydney, a 7.5-hour drive from Melbourne and a three-hour drive from Canberra. In winter, Perisher's  Skitube  is Australia's only alpine railway and is the quickest and most reliable way to travel to Perisher. Departing from Bullocks Flat (which offers plenty of free day and overnight parking), it only takes 10 minutes to travel to Perisher Valley. If you’re staying in Jindabyne, you can make use of the  Snowy Mountains Bus Service , which offers return travel to Perisher and Thredbo every day during ski season. Services run hourly, increasing to every 30 minutes to Perisher in the school holidays and during peak times.

    WATCH: The best of Perisher

Watch these highlights from Perisher, the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. Based in the Snowy Mountains the ski resort consists of four villages: Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Guthega and Blue Cow.
