Why Rent a Camper Van?

Renting a camper van can provide an elevated road trip experience by pairing some of the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road.

With a camper van, you’ll have everything you need with you including a bed, kitchen, indoor seating space, and in some cases, even a bathroom. There’s no need to set up camp and pitch a tent every night, so you’ll have the flexibility to camp in more places and will be able to move around more easily.

Plus, depending on where you want to travel, daily rental fees may be cheaper than a hotel room, and you can also save by cooking your own meals since most rental camper vans come with a sink, cooking equipment, fridge (or at least a cooler), and a stove.

Many people also rent a camper van to give van life a try before diving in and committing to buying a van themselves. It’s also a great way to test out a certain type of camper van model and layout to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Considerations for Renting a Campervan

With the growing popularity of van life, there are a growing number of camper van rental companies out there offering campervan rentals of all types for all budgets. That means you’ve got a good chance of finding a campervan rental at the right price for you.

Base pricing generally includes a certain number of daily miles (usually starting at 100 miles/day included, sometimes more) with an additional cost per mile if you go over.

Camper van rental companies often provide basics like bedding, camp chairs, a camp table, and cooking supplies although this varies and may not be included in some of the more budget campervan rentals. Most camper van rental companies also offer add-ons for an extra fee such as portable toilets, rooftop tents, and bike racks.

Be aware that you may need to pay a deposit and cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee, so be sure to read the company’s FAQs or discuss this with them before booking.

Seating & Sleeping Space

You’ll want to make sure the rental camper van you’re looking at can safely seat and sleep the number of people that you’ll be road tripping with. For example, some campervans have bench seating in the back, but these seats don’t always have seatbelts and aren’t meant to be used while driving.

Some campervan rentals offer a rooftop tent in addition to indoor sleeping space so you can have two separate sleeping areas. And some rental companies offer an add-on camping tent you can pitch if you need more sleeping space as well.

Some camper van rental companies include a variety of amenities in their rental fee, and some offer them as add-ons for an additional fee . Make sure you’re clear on what’s included in the price so you can plan accordingly.

From a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, cookware, and dishes to camp chairs, an outdoor table, and bedding, some camper van rentals come with all the amenities you need to cook and relax on your road trip.

On the other hand, some budget rental campervans are a little more bare bones so you’ll need to bring camping, cooking, and sleeping supplies with you.

You generally pay for what you get, so if you need the convenience of having all the amenities supplied (for example, if you’re flying to your destination and you don’t want to deal with bringing everything with you), then you’ll want to look for a campervan rental company who provides everything you need.

If you’ll be picking up a camper van near home and can load it up with everything you need for your trip, you can likely save some money by bringing your own gear.

Bathroom Facilities

Some camper van rentals come complete with a shower and toilet (usually a porta potty), and some don’t. If a bathroom is a must for you, make sure this is something you look for when searching for rentals, but be aware you’ll likely pay a little more as well.

If you plan to camp at campgrounds where bathrooms and showers are readily available, you can likely go without these luxuries and save some money. And if you plan on finding free campsites without facilities, you can likely get by with a portable shower and portable toilet system if you don’t mind roughing it a little.

We’ve noticed that most camper van rental companies will allow dogs for an additional fee , although there is one company on our list below that lets dogs join the adventure for free, and there are a few who don’t allow them at all.

Be sure to look into this before booking if you plan on road tripping with your dog .

Age Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an RV or camper van in the US .

Many campervan rental companies charge an additional fee for drivers who are under the age of 25 due to additional insurance costs.

When looking into renting a camper van, you’ll want to look into insurance requirements and pricing as well. Some camper van rental companies include insurance in their daily rates, while some add on an additional daily fee for insurance .

Most camper van rental companies do not allow you to be covered by your personal auto policy or credit card for campervan rentals . This is because most basic auto policies do not cover campervans that are classified as Class B RVs. Be sure to check with your insurance company prior to booking a campervan rental and ask specifically if your policy includes Class B RV coverage.

One Way Campervan Rentals

Depending on your road trip plans, you may want to start in one location and end in another to make the most of your time and avoid backtracking. If that’s the case, check with the campervan rental company to see if they charge an additional fee for one-way rentals.

In some cases, we’ve seen rental companies offer discounts on certain one way routes when they need a van transported from one location to another – that’s something to look out for as well.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rentals

With the rising popularity of van life, there are now a handful of peer-to-peer campervan rental companies where people rent out their own campervans – kind of like Airbnb but for camper van rentals. This allows owners to earn extra income by renting out their campervans when they’re not using them, and it gives travelers the chance to pick from a variety of campervan models, layouts, and interior designs.

These peer-to-peer campervan rental sites allow you to easily search for campervans available in your area or in the area you plan on traveling to.

Mercedes Sprinter RV Rental

Their vans sleep up to 5 people depending on the model. The interiors are clean and simple; some models have kitchens and baths and some don’t. I am looking to rent for a minimum of 6 months; do you know which companies may provide the best rates for More long term ventures? I am primarily concerned with finding comfort at a low price. LOst camper appears to Ben a good option. Was wondering if you knew of any companies specifically geared towards this end.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Not entirely sure – I’d recommend doing a google search or trying Outdoorsy. There are definitely campervan rental companies elsewhere in Colorado including Denver if you aren’t able to find anything in Colorado Springs. Good luck!

Would it be cheapest to rent a cargo van from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, or some other company for a few weeks and turn it into a temporary camper?

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

How to rent a campervan for your next road trip

Campervans help bridge the gap between car camping and RVing, and rentals offer an easy introduction to the lifestyle

For Harley Sitner of Peace Vans , van travel means “optimizing magic over efficiency.” His advice? “The first day is going to be a (madhouse), where you don’t know what to do or how things operate. Just stick it out. The second day gets easier, and the third gets easier yet. After the fourth night, most people are already looking for their own van.”

If you’re renting a camper van for the first time, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, there are plenty of options and resources to help you get started.

What to expect

Gas prices might be rising , but the cost of renting vans has remained relatively stable, according to April Cumming, a public relations manager at the peer-to-peer RV rental platform Outdoorsy . Many renters try to stay somewhat local, maybe going to two or three different parks over the course of their vacation, and they may not even go through an entire tank of gas on their trip.  

You can generally expect to pay between $100 and $350 per night for a van rental, which includes 100 to 150 miles per day of driving. From there, fees typically run between 25 and 50 cents per mile. Most companies also charge a cleaning fee at the end of the trip. Most companies have a 3- to 5-night rental minimum.

Be sure to look for what accessories are included. Many van rental companies include basic essentials such as pots, pans, dishes, linens, and more, but others might charge an additional fee.

If you feel overwhelmed with the number of choices, Moterra Campervan s and some other companies will prepare your entire itinerary for you (for a fee, of course). Peace Vans offers deals with several local campgrounds that reserve spots just for customers.

Where to look

Renters can choose between standard rental outfitters like Moterra or Peace Vans, or peer-to-peer rental companies like Outdoorsy, RVshare , RVezy , or Vancation . 

Specialty van rental companies like Moterra, Voyager , Peace Vans, and others have newer, fairly standard vans. Voyager builds out each of its vans while Peace Vans offers a vintage VW fleet, so you know exactly what you’re getting. If you plan a long itinerary and rent from a company with multiple locations, you can save time by flying into and out of different airports.

Peer-to-peer rental companies give you more options, allowing you to rent a van as basic or as luxurious as you need, but the service you receive from the actual RV owners can vary. Cumming says the company will step in if needed; if the van breaks down or another unexpected mishap occurs during your trip, they’ll do whatever they can to get you back on the road safely.

Ask the rental agent or owner to walk you through the features. Don’t assume you know how everything operates, especially if it’s your first time. Pay attention, but don’t stress over knowing how every little thing works. Nearly every van rental company has robust training materials online, and Voyager even places QR codes next to the van’s most confusing buttons and gadgets, allowing you to pull up a troubleshooting article or video immediately. If you need additional help, many companies have a 24/7 hotline.

While you’re there, don’t hesitate to ask the rental agent questions, not just about your van, but also about your destination(s). Moterra’s Trevor James says most employees love sharing their favorite destinations, and the company gives lists of campgrounds and outdoor activities to every renter. 

Driving a van

If renting a van and visiting a far-off destination is on your bucket list, Cumming suggests doing a shorter trip closer to home first to get a feel for the van and how to best travel in it.

Some travelers may be intimidated by driving a large Sprinter van, especially if they’ve never driven anything that big before, but James says the nerves usually go away after the first day. Modern vans have plenty of safety features, including blindspot alerts and backup cameras, that make piloting the van a piece of cake. 

If you’re driving a tall van, consider using an RV GPS (like Roadtrippers Premium ) that will navigate you away from low bridges and tight tunnels. Likewise, avoid parking garages and drive-throughs with low barriers. When it comes to driving speed, remember that a lead foot leads to buying more unleaded gas.

Getting to the campground

If you’re new to the outdoors, stick to established campgrounds until you feel more comfortable. Campground reservations tend to go fast these days, so book as early as possible. After you gain more experience, dispersed camping in national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas are a great way to save money and experience lesser-known parks.

Most renters fret about whether to splurge on a van with a toilet or shower. If you plan to stay at an established campground, both Voyager’s Grady Linder and Vancation’s Steve Dietrich suggest forgoing both . Dietrich says some owners on Vancation will include a disposable, portable toilet in case of emergencies. For those who are venturing off-grid, a toilet may be worth the splurge.

If you’re planning to stay at a campground with hookups, make sure you can plug your RV into the 50- or 30-volt outlet. If you’re planning to forgo hookups, look for a rental option with solar panels that will help keep your devices charged.

Overnighting in a van can take some getting used to. More compact than even the tiniest hotel room, it does take some adjustment, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends, but most of the kinks are usually worked out by the second or third day. Most renters spend the bulk of their time outside, not in the van.

How To Rent A Camper Van: Complete Guide For First-Timers

Renting a camper van is the only thing standing between you, your friends, and the quintessential road trip experience. Whether you want to rent a camper van for a weekend camping trip or an extended cross-country expedition, the rental process can be complex.

Renting a camper van requires a valid driver’s license for each potential driver, as well as a deposit and insurance. Some instances might require purchasing additional services, equipment, and fees.

Figuring out how to rent a camper van, where to rent one, and how to choose the right camper van for your trip can be confusing when deciding over the numerous camper van rental services, equipment, and options. This post will help you know what is involved when renting a camper van and simplifying your trip.

What Is Required to Rent A Camper Van?

In the United States, usually, any person that is 21 and has a driver’s license from their own country can rent a camper van as long as the requisite insurance is purchased. If you plan to tow your car or trailer behind your camper van, you might have to pay an additional fee to rent a tow hitch from the rental service. When choosing your camper van, try to plan for all the necessities you will need on your trip.

Rental companies may also offer electric heating kits for winter trips while others offer gas generators, 24/7 roadside assistance, and other equipment to make your camping van trip more comfortable.

Here are a few things that you might want or need to purchase to help make your camping trip a success.

• Nothing tastes better than food cooked outdoors. There is just something about cooking in the fresh air apparently that makes the food taste different. Coleman makes a two-burner stove that is perfect for weekend camping trips. It weighs a little over 11 pounds. When using a pound propane tank, it will run about one hour, and it has a three-sided wind barrier and a limited 3-year warranty.

Who Can Rent a Camper Van?

Anyone over 21 with a current driver’s license can most generally rent a camper van. However, companies’ policies may differ by setting a higher age for the minimum. There may be an upper limit too.

How Hard Are Camper Vans To Drive?

Camper vans aren’t much bigger than a standard truck or large SUV, and if you’re accustomed to driving a larger vehicle, driving a camper van will be a cinch. Many drivers won’t find it difficult to learn to drive a camper van.

If you have trouble driving large vehicles or get nervous doing so, it might take you some time to get comfortable driving a camper van, but it is always best to have an experienced driver along for the trip.

How Much Will It Cost to Rent a Camper Van?

The factors that determine the cost of a camper van rental are the rental itself, rental insurance, fuel, and mileage. The kind of van you decide on and the service you choose to rent will contribute to the overall cost.

Online services either offer camper van rentals or connect private owners to renters, and the price of each rental varies greatly. The rental alone can cost anywhere from $70-$300 a night before fuel, insurance, and mileage costs.

Camper vans rent like hotel rooms; typically, the charge is per night, sometimes with a minimum number of nights. If you keep the van beyond the return time, you will be charged for an additional night, depending on the rental agreement.

Some camper van rental service companies will, much like a hotel, will require a deposit to “hold” the van for the time that you have requested. The deposit amount will depend on the service and the camper van that you decide to rent.

Camper van security deposits can be up to $1,000 to protect the vehicle and all equipment. Make sure to ask about the deposit on your camper van before setting out on your trip.

Camper vans usually run on gasoline like cars, and heavier, larger camper vans will be less fuel-efficient than small cars. Some camper vans will get between 12 and 20 miles per gallon of fuel, while others might get less, depending on size.

Also, be mindful, there are camper vans that run on diesel, so be sure to know what fuel the camper van requires to ensure you fill up at the right pump.

You can calculate how much fuel will cost for your trip by dividing the number of miles by the mpg and multiplying by the fuel cost in your area. If your camper gets 10 mpg, you plan to travel 350 miles, and you pay $2.49 for a gallon of gas, it will cost $87.15 in fuel for your trip.

Mileage Limits

Camper van rentals most generally provide a free number of miles, usually up to about 250, before charging additional fees per mile. If you go over the mileage allotment, there is a price-per-mile charge for the extra miles.

Rental companies also offer unlimited miles for an additional fee. If you plan to take your rented camper van further than the mileage limit, inquire about unlimited mileage or the price-per-mile after the limit.

Cleaning Fees

Camper van rental services may charge a cleaning fee after each rental that runs from $40-$60 in addition to your rental period. Make sure to budget for the cleaning fee before you rent a camper van.

You won’t be able to return a rental van to a city where they don’t offer service; it won’t be like renting from U-Haul that has numerous locations all over the country.

Can You Tow Your Car with a Camper Van Rental?

Larger camper vans might have the towing capacity for your car, but you will need to follow the camper van rental service’s specific guidelines to tow a vehicle. Some providers may not allow you to tow a vehicle at all.

If towing is allowed, you will have to make sure to get a van with the towing capacity for your car and towing a car might incur additional fees from your rental provider. You might also have to rent towing equipment.

How Much Does It Cost To Park a Camper Van at a Campground?

The cost of parking a camper van at a campground largely depends on where you stay and what kind of site you need. Without a bathroom in your rented camper van, RV parks and campgrounds are great places to find a shower and settle for the night.

While state parks and campgrounds usually offer sites from $15-$30 a night, other campgrounds offer places from $30-$50 dollars a night. If you plan to spend your camping or road trip in campgrounds or RV parks, be sure to budget for the cost of where you plan to stay.

It is also vital not to assume that campgrounds or parks will have sites available when you need one. For your camper van trip, make sure to book campsites in advance to ensure you have a parking spot to camp for the night or however long you want to stay at one location.

Returning the Camper Van After Your Trip

Camper vans rental services usually ask that you return the camper van in the condition in which you received the van, this means cleaning inside and outside, disposing of any trash, and filling the tires and gas tank. Most services will require return paperwork and inspection.

If the service finds that you haven’t fulfilled the rental agreement terms when you return the camper van, they may charge you for a portion or all of the deposit to make up any damage, cleaning, or other things not in the same condition as when rented.

How Can You Find a Rental Camper Van?

There is probably a camper van rental service local to your area, but the following list details some popular and simple camper van rental services available online. You might have to drive to a nearby city to pick up your rental. Some services help you to connect with private camper van owners who rent their vans.

RVShare.com

RV Share is a service that connects renters to the RV or camper van rental of their choice from both private and corporate owners. Simply input the type of camper van you are searching for, the location or area you want to pick up the van, and how long you are looking to rent, and RV Share will connect you with available rentals.

Since the prices per-night, deposits, and mileage charges, are determined by each van’s owner, prices vary widely by location and vehicle. RV Share does offer rental insurance to its clients to protect both the renter and owner. Standard RV insurance from RV Share starts at $10 per day.

RV share requires users to verify their ID on the website before booking a rental. You will need to provide a picture ID and a “selfie” photo without any sunglasses or caps to verify your identity.

This service is excellent for anyone looking to rent a camper van in a rural area since it connects users to camper van owners rather than large rental services, which can be hard to find or access in rural areas.

Outdoorsy is another service that connects users to RV and camper van rentals in their area, connecting users with private owners across the country that are in convenient locations for many renters. Their website has a complete list of rental locations.

Outdoorsy holds a deposit of at least $500 for each rental, and each camper van owner dictates how many nights minimum you must rent each camper van. The van owner also sets mileage limits.

Outdoorsy rentals start around $120 a night for a camper van that sleeps two. Outdoorsy offers three levels of insurance protection enabling the renter to pick the one that meets their needs.

Escape Campervans

Escape Campervans is a service dedicated to camper van rentals with twelve locations across North America. Escape offers a streamlined service with five camper van models from which to choose. Escape Campervans are available for pick-up from Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Vancouver, and Calgary.

If you are looking for a one-way rental, Escape might be an excellent service for you since you can conveniently pick up and drop off rented camper vans in any of their locations. They also provide insurance from $13.99 a day, making the service simple to utilize.

Camper vans from Escape varying in pricing depending on the model and time of year and will require a deposit of $200. Escape also rents to anyone over 21 and charges no young driver fee. They provide 24/7 roadside service on all of their vans and offer lots of useful equipment and add-ons for rent.

Escape charges a $150 non-refundable pet fee if you plan to bring your pets along, which is for two pets. The base packages include 100 miles a day, but you will be refunded if you drive under the allotted miles and charged if you drive further than that amount of miles.

Native Campervans

With locations in Denver, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City, Native Campervans is one of the premier camper van rental services in the Western US. Native Campervans offer 100 miles per night on all of their five van sizes, cooking essentials, renter’s insurance, and additional drivers.

Native offers five sizes of camper vans for rent, their OG, a Dodge Caravan, is as low as $79 a night, and they require a $1,000 security deposit, which they will return less any damages. You can have one dog maximum, but only with prior approval, and they charge a pet cleaning fee of $100.

Voyager Campervans

Voyager Campervans has locations in Phoenix, Nashville, Minneapolis, Austin, and Portland and offers different camper van rentals from each. Voyager Campervans are all brightly painted and branded and are fun accommodations for any camping trip.

Their daily rate includes 250 miles per day, more than other services, roadside assistance, complimentary camping supplies, and require no pet fees. Voyager does not yet offer one-way trips between locations, but that feature is coming soon.

Insurance and unlimited miles packages start at $12 per day, while 2-night rentals start at $119 a day in most cities ($149 in others). Longer rentals have reduced daily rental fees.

RV Rental Connection

RV Rental Connection is another service that connects users to privately owned RV and camper van renters. RV Rental Connection is unique because it works with other small businesses around the country to provide RV and camper van rentals across North America.

RV Rental Connection doesn’t standardize rental prices or offer insurance, roadside assistance, or other services, instead of relying on owners to provide those services to their renters. This service can be a great way to find an RV to rent anywhere.

Lost Campers

Lost Campers is a budget RV and camper van rental service based in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. Lost Campers offers minivans, converted vans, and fully outfitted camper vans starting at $84 per night.

Each rental includes daily unlimited miles, and Lost Campers provides insurance coverage and 24/7 roadside assistance on your rental. They offer a wide range of vans in all sizes, and deposits are determined by the size and kind of camper van you rent.

If you are near Boise, Idaho, Portland Oregon, or Salt Lake City, Utah Wandervans might be the best service for you. Wandervans rents three different Ford models with excellent gas mileage and a range of sizes. All of Wandervans’ rentals include a kitchen, fridge, chairs, and a shower.

The smaller sizes sleep two people and start at $98 a day, making Wandervan rentals a great value. All rentals include 150 miles of travel per day plus camping gear. Wandervans offers insurance plans on all rentals for your peace of mind.

Jucy Rentals

Jucy Rentals has locations in San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, with rates starting at about $150 a night. What makes Jucy Rentals unique is that they offer fully outfitted “mini-RVs” with lots of amenities and services.

Jucy does not offer personal liability insurance, and the deposits on rentals are 20% of the vehicle’s total rental cost, which is standard. Their rental prices do not include free daily miles, like some services, and 100 miles per night will run the renter $12 per day.

Adventure Travel Sport Rentals

Located in Golden, Colorado (25 miles from Denver), Adventure Travel Sport Rentals offers off-road camper vans and vehicles to explore Colorado’s beautiful terrain. Rentals start at just $125 per night.

Each vehicle from Adventure Travel Sports Rentals is outfitted with different equipment, making it easy for you to find the perfect off-road camper van for your trip. Prices for rental decrease as you increase the duration of your rental, with a three-day minimum.

Roamerica is more than just a clever name; they offer spacious and heavy-duty camper vans for rent in Portland, Oregon, to access the beauty of the Pacific Northwest’s wilderness. Roamerica offers Ford Transits and Ford Econolines with pop-up additions for standing room and room for each camper van to sleep four comfortably.

Rates begin at $260 per night, not including extra mileage fees, insurance, and if the van returns dirty, there will be a cleaning fee. They do all come outfitted with camping equipment to make your trip simple and let you enjoy more of the outdoors.

Basecamper Vans

Basecamper Vans is another small, local rental service based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Basecamper Vans offers a range of small camper vans that sleep, 2-4 people. All of their vans are automatic transmissions and outfitted with custom finishing for maximum comfort and style.

Rental fees include 125 miles of travel per day, starting at $99 a day, with discounts for long-term rentals. They don’t offer unlimited mileage and require drivers to be at least 25. They also provide multiple insurance options for the duration of your rental, but they are not included in the rental fee.

Campervan North America

Campervan North America doesn’t offer custom or unique camper vans, but they offer affordability and simplicity. They have pick-up locations in Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, and Bozeman, Montana, which grants access to Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton National Parks.

Rates for small, 2-person vans begin at $48 a night, but rates are higher for less than five nights or peak seasons. Those rates do not include mileage packages or pet fees. Mileage runs $95 per 250 miles – unused prepaid miles are non-refundable, and pet fees run from $45-$90.

Pros of Renting a Camper Van

• Flexibility is one of the big pros of renting a camper van. You can park them anywhere, and they offer maximum flexibility for camping, moving, or extended road trips. There are also camper vans for rent across North America!
• Low-cost camper vans are common, and in most areas, it is easy to find a camper van to rent that is relatively cheap.
• No special license is required to drive a camper van, unlike larger RVs, which require different classes of driver’s license to rent and drive.
• Pet-friendly camper vans are the default, with some camper van rentals not even charging pet fees or deposits. Hotel rooms and other lodgings that are pet friendly can be hard to find and expensive.
• No ownership costs. You won’t have the financial burden of payments or the outright cash cost of purchasing a van. Also, you won’t have upkeep costs.

Cons of Renting a Camper Van

• Hidden fees are standard when it comes to rentals of any kind. Make sure to have a conversation about all of the charges assessed for the rental before you sign a rental agreement.
• No bathroom in camper vans can be a problem on the road, but luckily, they are easy to park when stopping at public restrooms.
• Supplemental heat and cooling are often not included in camper vans, so you might want to make accommodations to warm or cool the van while parked if traveling or camping in particularly hot or cold months.
• Campground costs can rack up quickly. Find state and national parks that are lower-cost or find a free place to park your camper van to avoid campground fees.
• Rental fees, mileage costs, and additional fees all add up fast, so you may be looking at a couple of thousand dollars for a weeklong trip.

Where Can You Rent a Camper Van? The Best U.S. Van Rentals

Are you ready to rent a van for your road trip but aren’t sure where to start? Between van rental platforms like Outdoorsy and van rental companies across the country, there are A LOT of rental vehicle options!

But that’s the fun part–researching which van will fit all of your needs (and gear). Maybe you like the idea of renting a custom, DIY van from a private owner. Or maybe you’d feel more comfortable in a fleet van rental from a company, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

As you start researching the perfect rental van, ask yourself the questions below to help narrow it down:

Do you need a 4×4 camper van rental?

Once you have those answers, you can start perusing vehicle rental platforms or find a campervan rental company near you. Which leads us to…

Will You Rent Through a Van Rental Platform or Company?

The biggest difference between peer-to-peer van rental platforms vs rental companies is that you’re communicating with the private owner of each van on a rental platform, but communicating with the company if renting from a van rental company.

P2P van rental platforms will have a much more diverse pool of van rentals (with a much bigger price range) than camper van rental companies. Customize depending on your preferred van make and model, amenities, cost, pet-friendliness, nationwide pickup location, and more.

The risk is that the platform only covers basic things such as insurance and tracking your communication with the owner. Everything else is left up to the van owner to decide–so you want to make sure you’re working with a responsible, respectful and communicative van rental host.

A van rental company will have a select rental fleet, with limited options on make and model, amenities and price range. But they’re more likely to have multiple locations if you want to take a one-way road trip. And they’re more likely to offer luxury amenities or unlimited mileage. You can also rest assured knowing their vans are professionally maintained, unlike a private van owner whose word you just have to trust.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rental Platforms

Van rental platforms are the AirBnB of the camper van world. They give you the chance to experience living in any type campervan you can imagine. These platforms allow van owners to rent out their vehicles at their own set prices with their own amenities. Most of these platforms also list rentals from RV dealerships.

Oftentimes, van owners will offer extra camping gear for an additional fee (or for free if they’re really cool). Popular amenities include camping chairs, bike racks, a portable toilet , sleeping bags–basically all the gear you can think of!

Outdoorsy is first on the list because 1) I rent out my van on it so I’m slightly biased and 2) it is the largest platform that’s the most focused on Class B campervan rentals. It offers towable vehicles and Class A and C motorhomes, but it’s best-known for the Class B campervans, such as Ford Transits, ProMasters, Mercedes Sprinters, Chevy Expresses, Ford Econolines, etc.

It’s also the only platform that offers insurance on vehicles 20+ years old, so you can REALLY get that vintage van rental if that’s what you’re looking for. Think old school Volkswagen Vanagons…

RVshare is another popular van rental platform that focuses on Class A, B and C campervans. You can find anything from huge Winnebagos to newer Mercedes Benz Sprinters on RVShare. RVShare and Outdoorsy are similar platforms with slight differences in filtering abilities when van rental hunting. As its name suggests, RVShare has more vehicle listings for big Class A motorhomes or Class C motorhomes, vs. the smaller Class B campervans.

RVezy is another great van or RV rental platform that allows you to search by towable RVs, motorhomes, pet-friendly RVs, deliverables RVs or even stationary RVs. The website even helps you with buying an RV, if you decide to go that route.

Other Camper Van Rental Platforms

There are lots of rental platforms out there! RVnGo lets you filter searches by ADA compliant/wheelchair accessible vans and RVs. HipCamp offers everything from RVs and vans to cabins, campsites, treehouses and glamping. GoCamp prides themselves on only offering high-quality, well-maintained vans that must include all sleeping, eating, cooking and camping amenities.

Their website states, “All vehicles are 4-berth models, guaranteed 2020-2021 models and equipped with large permanent rear and cab-over beds.” Britz offers certain add-ons such as camp chairs, awnings, generators and more. Rental Vans for One-Way Road Trips

A one-way road trip means you pick up the van rental in a different location than you drop it off. One-way road trips are great for those on a tight schedule, who don’t want to lose a day or more just backtracking to their original pickup spot. You’ll also save money on fuel costs and mileage.

But one-way road trip rentals typically include an additional fee and are usually only available between cities with major airports. Most platforms or rental companies that offer one-way road trips only do so between cities within the same state, or neighboring states. Very few offer cross-country options.

But heads up, 4×4 van rentals cost more than your regular FWD or RWD vans. They are also unnecessary for van life 99% of the time, unless you plan on doing extreme hardcore off-roading or winter van life .

If you’re a regular on Field Mag, you likely well aware of the ongoing camper van and overland trend. And with 2020 dragging on with no end in sight, road trip upgrades are very “of the moment”.

Long before #vanlife became a hashtag, there have been companies renting RVs, trailers, and vans of varying sizes and capabilities to anyone looking for a little (or a lot) more in their car camping experience. While the 13 options below are by no means an exhaustive list, they do represent a good mix of what’s out there and what you can likely find in a region near you.

Rental camper vans and overland rigs are an awesome way to see the country, but it’s also worth noting that these are atypical vehicle rentals and mandatory extra charges like insurance and service fees can add up fast. So, if you’re budget-minded, be sure to take a look at the whole package before signing on. Then do so and have a dang good time.

An RV rental is one such way forward as your wheels, lodging, and dining are all relegated to one controlled space. However, they tend to be difficult to drive, sometimes too large for campgrounds, and pricey when it comes to fuel.

For an equally convenient way to travel with more flexibility, consider the camper van. 

Like larger RVs and motorhomes, a camper van offers travelers increased levels of control over their environments. The best camper van is a self-contained living pod with sleeping, washing, and cooking facilities all onboard. They allow easy access to socially distant spots in nature, are easier to drive, better on fuel, and can slip into most campgrounds without problems.

Finding the right camper van can be a challenge, though, as there exists a wide range of potential renting (and buying) options. Below are four of the best camper van rental services we've found based on reputation, customer satisfaction levels, specialties, all-around value, and fleet offerings.

Pros : A well-established company with a good number of locations and excellent customer service. 

Cons : Some relatively older rental stock, but vans are regularly maintained. 

C ompany info and locations : Founded in New Zealand in 2003, the company opened in the US in 2008 and now has 12 locations and 600 vehicles. Locations include Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, Calgary and Vancouver. Their vans have funky, painted exteriors and range from Jeeps up to large Newport campers.   

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced, 80-point cleaning and detailing policies, facilities meeting CDC guidelines, minimizing customer contact (a contactless option will be offered from June 2020), flexible cancellation policies.  

Typical rental costs : The Escape Mavericks package includes a camper van sleeping up to five people, priced at $35 per day for unlimited mileage in a Ford E-150 or Transit, with kitchen (stove, refrigerator). The price quote is for traveling out of Miami.

Company info and locations : A family-owned business that has operated since 2007. Locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and also Salt Lake City (seasonally). The company bills itself as the budget option, and rents out mainly Dodge Grands and Ford E350 vans. 

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced cleaning policies under CDC guidelines, minimizing contact with customers. 

Typical rental costs : Wanderer camper van sleeps two people, from $83 per night, rentals include unlimited mileage and roadside assistance. The vehicle includes a full outdoor kitchen including stove and ice chest. The price is for traveling out of Los Angeles.

Pros : The place to rent from if retro-chic appeals to you, with some truly special vehicles in their fleet. The company is exceptionally knowledgeable and will happily help out with suggested itineraries. 

Cons : The age of some of the vehicles means there are some restrictions on parts of the fleet in terms of range (some 100 miles per day limits) and restricted roads (some cannot drive up very steep inclines). There is just one location to rent from.  

Company info and locations : This company has been specifically renting out vintage camper vans for over 14 years, and is based in Costa Mesa, California. Their fleet is exclusively restored VW camper vans from the 1970s and 1980s, with some less iconic but more modern vehicles as well, all with revamped interiors. 

COVID-19 policies : Enhanced, stringent disinfecting procedures, particularly for 'high touch' points. 

Typical rental costs : 1984 VW 'Lime Cello' Vanagaon sleeps four passengers with two sleeping berths (one a pop-top on the roof), from $169 per night, mileage conditions to be outlined at the time of booking. The vehicle includes a propane stove and refrigerator/icebox. The price quote is for traveling out of Costa Mesa.

Cons : The vehicles have relatively few amenities and fans of luxury additions may find them on the sparse side. 

Company info and locations : The company has been in business since 2009. Since starting out in Bozeman, Montana, they have expanded to four locations in Denver, Las Vegas, and Seattle. The company has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2015 and holds an A+ rating.   

COVID-19 policies : The company has instituted a comprehensive disinfecting program for each rental in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

Typical rental costs : The Bunkhouse camper van sleeps up to four people (one large bed, two single bunks), from $128 per night, 500 prepaid miles for $180, and a $90 set up/preparation fee. Based on a Dodge Promaster van, it does not come with a stove or refrigeration. The price quote is for traveling out of Denver.

It's vital to check that you can park your camper van at the campground you intend to visit and check what facilities they have there.

Booking ahead is key due to increased demand. Overnight campsite and park fees with 'hookups' (electricity, water, bathrooms, and/or sewage disposal) typically range from $30 to $50 per night or more for the best quality grounds. Some older camper vans may not be suitable for roads with steep inclines, so check your proposed routes with the rental company at the time of booking. 

Outside of campgrounds, it is also possible to find places to park (usually for limited amounts of time) without any facilities, either in remote areas or at designated spots. This is called 'dry camping' or 'boondocking' and is usually free of charge. You can find these locations on the website for the United States Forest Service or Campendium . This option is much easier for camper vans than it is for huge motorhomes.  

There are other obvious preparation tips, such as having a full complement of water (some camper vans do not include running or potable water onboard), groceries, and other essentials. What's the difference between a motor home and a camper van?

Motor homes and camper vans both generally fall under the general definition of an RV.

A motor home is usually larger, built on a bus or truck chassis, and has a divider between the driver's cab and the living quarters, which include comfortable sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities. 

A camper van is generally smaller, typically with no divide, and usually more basic. Many were not originally built to be self-contained living quarters and have been specially adapted and fitted to serve this purpose. 

Are all camper vans the same? 

Customers can choose from a range of outfitted vehicles, some with very basic facilities and some with rockstar levels of comfort but all offer flexibility, economic benefits, and control over the traveler's own environment. It's tricky to specify exact fuel economies for each type but for average-sized camper vans, around 20 miles per gallon is a good working average. 

"Camper vans offer great gas mileage and can access the more restricted roads (that might be unavailable to larger motorhomes)," Kirby Sandberg said. "They also offer great maneuverability and visibility when driving, and you'll save big by having the option to camp instead of booking into hotels." 

What kinds of camper vans are there?

Basic outfitted/converted camper vans: These are general-use vans like the Ford Transit that were not built for camping but which have been converted. Additions usually include basic sleeping quarters and storage for camping or biking gear, with more upscale models including a small kitchen or galley area with a refrigerator, sink, and running water. Composting toilets and propane-heated shower attachments for outdoor showering are also possible.

Purpose-made outfitted camper vans: These are usually newer-generation products built intentionally to be sold to travelers. They tend to be more luxurious with upgraded fixtures and fittings, made from comfortable materials, and feature nicely integrated electronics and plumbing facilities. Upper echelon versions have dining rooms and full bathrooms with showers, too. Brands of these include Winnebago, Volkswagen, and Airstream.

High-top outfitted camper vans: These vehicles typically come with a higher roof that's either been factory-fitted on the original vehicle or extended as part of a conversion. Think of this as added "attic'' space that can be used for sleeping quarters, storage space for camping, or adventure gear. Some variations include pop-up or semi-rigid tops, as well as those compatible with rooftop tents .
