Adam Scott still ‘playing with house money’ after wild collapse, recovery in $30m event
Aussie Adam Scott remains within the hunt for his first victory in four years despite losing his comfortable lead during a wild third round at the prestigious BMW Championship in Los Angeles.
The 43-year-old held a three-shot advantage on the field heading into the third round, having fired a superb course record-equalling 9-under-63 in round two . However he endured a nightmare beginning on Saturday, hitting out of bounds with his first shot and making double bogey on the third hole as he dropped four shots in the first four holes.
Scott, though, managed to steady the ship in a gutsy showing, pulling back two strokes on the 16th and 17th to card a two-over 74 and sit one shot behind American veteran Keegan Bradley heading into the final round of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs event, worth a whopping $US20 million ($A30 million).

Scott struggled badly on the greens but was otherwise relatively pleased with his game as he kept alive his bid for a first title since winning the 2020 Genesis Invitational.
“I kind of felt like I made a meal of (the start) and I didn’t feel like I did that much wrong,” Scott said post-round.
“A couple of drives were just not quite right, and a three-putt, and all of a sudden I’m kind of chasing.
“... I really struggled mostly on the greens today. They were just so different from yesterday’s round speed-wise and firmness and look and everything. Felt like I was on a different course almost, and I just battled that most of the round.
“The good shots I hit, I didn’t really get the reward. But I’m in a good spot in the end of it to be one back.”
Getting into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings, not only made sure that Scott would compete this week but secured him spots in the tour’s elite Signature Events next season.
The Australian only made it into the top 50 thanks to a final round 67 at the St Jude Championship on Sunday, but with that pressure off reitered he is playing with freedom.
“Look, I (still) love my position. I feel like, again, a bit like yesterday, I’m playing on house money, and I’m right in this golf tournament,” Scott said.
“I don’t know how many times, too, this year I reckon I’ve been in contention going into Sunday, so I’m excited for tomorrow.”
Scott is a shot ahead of Swedes Ludvig Åberg (71) and Alex Noren (70), with world No.2 Xander Schauffele making a charge with a 67 to be fifth, five strokes off the lead.
Bradley birdied the 18th hole to take a one stroke advantage over Australia’s Adam Scott into Sunday’s final round of the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship at Castle Pines, Colorado.
Surprise leader Bradley, who sneaked into the top 50 for the second event in the FedEx Cup playoff series thanks to his final round last week, carded a 2-under round of 70 after a challenging round in windy conditions.
The 2025 USA Ryder Cup captain shot six bogeys and seven birdies as he jousted with Scott and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg at the top of the leaderboard.
“It was tough out there today. It was really windy, a lot of elevated tees that were into the wind, which makes it really tough,” said Bradley after sinking a nine-foot putt on the final hole to regain the solo lead.
“I played some brilliant golf but I hit also some terrible shots, too. I guess that’s the way of the world. But I’m proud of the way I fought there in the end,” he said.
Bradley’s round was in danger of falling apart on the back nine where he made three straight bogeys between 11 and 13.
But he bounced back with successive birdies and did the same again after a bogey on the 16th.
Bradley’s status as Ryder Cup captain, despite being only 38 and an active member of the tour, has meant chants of ‘USA, USA’ around the course.
Scottie Scheffler, leader in the FedEx Cup standings, was 13 shots behind Bradley after finishing the round with a 2-over 74.

Who won the FedEx St. Jude Championship last year — and every PGA Tour winner in Memphis
Lucas Glover , the defending FedEx St. Jude Championship winner, shot 15-under-par at TPC Southwind in Memphis in August 2023 and beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to capture the signature event that kicks off the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
In doing so, Glover joined a long line of big names who have been crowned champion of the PGA Tour event held annually in Memphis since 1958. It was played at Colonial Country Club until 1989, when it moved to TPC Southwind.
The event has undergone multiple name changes over the years. It also has seen its stakes elevated. In 2019, it became a World Golf Championship event and was renamed the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. In 2021, it was designated a FedEx Cup playoff tournament and was changed to the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
This year's tournament begins Thursday.
