10 Ships named Enterprise: from seafaring vessels, to fictional starships.

In the English dictionary, the word “enterprise” is defined as “a project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort.” This noun has been the name of many ships throughout history. It was also the name used for one of the now retired space shuttles, and it also became part of popular culture, with the help of the Star Trek Series. When you look at the events in which some of these vessels took part, their name certainly justifies the definition. Since the first ship bearing this name and proudly serving in the new United States navy, these ships have been a symbol of prestige. Since the American Revolutionary War, the “Enterprises” have been undertaking many important and difficult missions, protecting people in naval battles, moving the boundaries of traveling into space, and, ultimately, defending humanity on an intergalactic level in a fictional universe. Here are some of those remarkable and iconic ships of the United States navy, together with the space shuttle and the fictional ones from Star Trek. Who knows, maybe one day this tradition will continue with real life space vessels that will take us into deep space.

USS Enterprise (1775)

The USS Enterprise was a Continental Navy sloop-of-war that served in Lake Champlain during the American Revolutionary War. This is the first is the first of a long and prestigious line of United States Navy ships to bear the name  Enterprise . This Enterprise originally belonged to the Brittish Royal Navy and it was classified as a “sloop-of-war”. The original name of this ship was George. George was built at St. Johns (now Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu) in Quebec, Canada under this name. But its destiny will soon change. In May 1775, a small American force under Colonel Benedict Arnold sailed up the Richelieu River. At 07:00 on 18 May, Arnold and 35 raiders captured the fort and shipyards at St. Johns, along with the newly launched George , with no loss of life. Two hours later Arnold’s raiders left on board the newly captured sloop, which was later armed with 12 guns and renamed Enterprise .

For awhile, Enterprise was the most significant warship in Lake Champlain. The ship was charged with maintaining American control of the lake in the early days of the war. Enterprise also acted as flagship for Colonel Arnold.

The story of the first Enterprise  ended only two years after it was built. She was one of five vessels assigned to convoy duty in Bateaux in the evacuation of Ticonderoga. The small American force was no match for the British fleet on Lake Champlain, and after two ships had been captured, Enterprise and the other two were run aground on 7 July 1777 and burned down in order to prevent their capture.

USS Enterprise  [CV-6] (1936)

This was the seventh ship named Enterprise and the first one to receive the nickname Big “E”. It had many nicknames including the Lucky “E”, the “Grey Ghost” and the “Galloping Ghost”. The Big “E” was launched in 1936 and was one of only three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war (the other two are  Saratoga  and Ranger ). She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than any other US ship. It is interesting that on three separate occasions during the Pacific War, the Japanese announced that CV-6 had been sunk in battle, earning her the name “The Grey Ghost”. Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, the most for any U.S. warship in World War II and became the most decorated US ship of World War II.

Enterprise was at sea on the morning of 7 December 1941 and received a radio message from Pearl Harbor, reporting that the base was under attack. That evening,  Enterprise , screened by six of her Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters, put into Pearl Harbor for fuel and supplies. The aircraft were fired on by anti-aircraft defenses, and one pilot radioed in, reporting that his aircraft was an American aircraft. She sailed early the next morning to patrol against possible additional attacks in the Hawaiian Islands. Although the group encountered no surface ships, Enterprise aircraft sank Japanese submarine  I-70 on 10 December 1941.

The CV-6  was deemed surplus for the post-war needs of America’s navy. She entered the New York Naval Shipyard on 18 January 1946 for deactivation and was decommissioned on 17 February 1947. Surviving Enterprise artifacts include the ship’s bell, which resides at the U.S. Naval Academy. and the sixteen-foot, one-ton nameplate from the ship’s stern in River Vale, New Jersey.

USS Enterprise  [CVN-65] (1961)

She was the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth United States naval vessel to bear the name Enterprise. Like her predecessor of World War II (The seventh Enterprise), she is nicknamed “Big E”. The CVN-65 is 1,123 ft (342 m) and although inactive, she still holds the length record among naval vessels. She is also the 12-th heaviest supercarrier (94,781 tonnes). This huge ship had a crew of 4,600 service members.

Among many other missions, on 20 February 1962, the  Enterprise was used as a tracking and measuring station for the flight of Friendship 7 , the Project Mercury space capsule in which Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. made the first American orbital spaceflight. This event tightly connects the Enterprise with the early efforts for conquering space.

As of 2016, Enterprise is still a commissioned United States Navy ship but is inactive. She has undergone enough of the four-year-long inactivation process to render her unfit for further military service. Inactivation removes fuel, fluids, furnishings, tools, fittings and de-energizes the ship’s electrical system.  Enterprise has already been cut open to allow the removal of usable systems.

Space Shuttle Enterprise  [OV101] (1976)

This is the transition point. The enterprise slowly moved from water into the air. The Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first orbiter of the Space Shuttle system.  Rolled out on September 17, 1976, it was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform atmospheric test flights after being launched from a modified Boeing 747. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield and was therefore not capable of spaceflight. It was only a prototype.

While we all know about the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet…

Originally, Enterprise had been intended to be refitted for orbital flight to become the second space-rated orbiter in service. However, during the construction of Space Shuttle  Columbia , details of the final design changed, making it simpler and less costly to build Challenger  around a body frame that had been built as a test article. Similarly, Enterprise was considered for refit to replace Challenger after the latter was destroyed, but Endeavour  was built from structural spares instead.

This shuttle was named Enterprise (OV-101) following a write-in campaign organized by fans of the, already popular, original Star Trek series (from 1969). When the shuttle rolled out of the manufacturing facilities, it was even greeted by the iconic cast of the show.  An interesting mix of science and fiction.

VSS Enterprise (2009)

The VSS Enterprise was the first SpaceShipTwo (SS2), built by Scaled Composites for Virgin Galactic. As of 2004, it was planned to be the first of five commercial suborbital SS2 spacecraft planned by Virgin Galactic.

rolling out of production on 7 December 2009, the vessel made its first powered flight in April 2013. It broke the sound barrier achieving a speed of Mach 1.43, and climbed to 69.000 feet (21 km) over the Mojave Desert under rocket power and then descended.

The VSS Enterprise’ s name was an acknowledgment of the USS Enterprise from the Star Trek television series.

Unfortunately, the VSS  Enterprise was destroyed during a powered test flight on 31 October 2014, killing one pilot and seriously injuring another. This amazing spaceship will always have a significant place in history as one of the earliest commercial spaceflight efforts.

USS Enterprise  [XCV 330] (2143 in the Star Trek timeline )

And now we enter into the realm of fictional spacefaring vessels from the Star Trek universe. This is the USS Enterprise (XCV-330), previously the UESP Enterprise (7) and also the SS  Enterprise. It is the first spacecraft named Enterprise to be designated a starship. According to Star Trek lore, The UESP Enterprise was originally built as a Starliner, a manned interstellar probe, by the United Earth Space Probe Agency in the mid-to-late 21st century, as one of Earth’s earliest attempts at interstellar travel. It was the only one of its class to reach its destination of Alpha Centauri.

This vessel only appeared as an illustration in a scene of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), and once again, as a painting in one of the “Star Trek: Enterprise” episodes (2001)

Enterprise [NX01] (2151)

It had the in-universe registration of NX-01 and appeared earlier in the franchise timeline than any Starfleet ship named Enterprise . The NX-01 was commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer and it was the centerpiece of the Star Trek: Enterprise TV show (2001–2005).

The interior of the vessel was designed by Zimmerman, who visited United States Navy fast-attack submarines for inspiration. He also kept in mind the heritage of the other ships named Enterprise in the history of Star Trek . In many of the episodes, you can see illustrations of some of the previously mentioned vessels that bear the same name. The illustrations were hanged in the captain’s room.

Enterprise [NCC-1701] (2245)

“to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before”.

These are the words of captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), from the voice-over at the beginning of every Original Star Trek episode (1966-1969). They accurately explain the mission of the fictional  Enterprise [NCC-1701], the vessel that formed the basis for one of sci-fi’s most iconic images.

The NCC-1701 is the central starship for the whole fictional Star Trek universe, depicted in 6 network television series, 12 feature films, and countless books and fan-created media.  The ship’s design “formed the basis for one of sci-fi’s most iconic images”

This starship and its design, made (and still makes) a huge cultural impact in many different aspects. It influenced many people and it inspired many new and important inventions.

The extent of the influence it had can be recognized in this example. Because of the efficiency of its style and layout, the Enterprise ‘ s bridge design was once considered for use by the United States Navy. More precisely, the layout of task stations caused the Navy to rethink the division of labor for managing rapidly changing information: helmsman focuses on immediate steering requirements, navigator plans helmsman’s next actions, captain plans strategy while looking over the shoulders of both. Without visual distraction, the captain is told from behind about engine status, weapons status, and fleet communications.

USS Enterprise [NCC-1701-D] (2363)

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), or shortly  Enterprise -D, is a 24th-century starship in the Star Trek fictional universe and the focus point of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series (1987–1994).

The Enterprise -D is a Galaxy -class ship and the sixth Federation starship in the Star Trek universe to carry the name Enterprise .  Enterprise -D is the flagship of Starfleet. In most of its service in the Star Trek universe, the commanding officer of Enterprise -D is the famous and also iconic captain Jean-Luc Picard.

This is yet another fictional ship from the  Star Trek universe that influenced many young people.

USS Enterprise  [NCC-1701-E] (2372)

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E), sometimes referred to as the Enterprise -E was a Federation Sovereign -class heavy explorer starship in service to Starfleet (in the fictional world of Star Trek). The ship was designed to fight the infamous Borg collective. This Enterprise vessel in the movies “Star Trek: First Contact” (1996), “Star Trek: Insurrection” (1998), and “Star Trek Nemesis” (2002). The sixth Federation starship, and seventh Starfleet vessel, to bear the prestigious name. From 2373 to 2385, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was assigned as the Enterprise’s commanding officer.

U – What’s the Secret Meaning of the USS in USS Enterprise?

Maurice Mitchell

U as in USS

All the Federation starships in the Star Trek universe have the designator USS, like USS Enterprise or USS Voyager , but what does it mean and where did it come from?

Officially, the designator means “United Star Ship (Federation of Planets).”

The creator of the show, Gene Roddenberry, was a US Navy man and his vision of Star Trek was of a Naval vessel in space.

In fact, the original pitch had the name USS Yorktown after a World War II aircraft carrier. It’s usage dates back to the seafaring days when the US Navy used U.S.S. to mean  “United States Ship.”

Obviously, this is pretty US-specific, so Gene Roddenberry’s described it as a “United Space Ship.”

In three episodes of the original series it was called by the name “United Star Ship.” In the “The Cage,” the Enterprise is refered to as the “United Space Ship Enterprise.” Captain Kirk also used the term in “Elaan of Troyius” and Dr. McCoy did in the episode “Space Seed.”

To confuse you even more, in the UK comic series it’s known as “Universe Star Ship.”

Yeah, shouldn't it be more like United Federation Ship or something these days? Then again, Roddenberry did do a good homage to the phrase U.S.S. by incorporating it into the Enterprise's name.

Hi. I am following Alex's DISQUS trail for the A-Z Challenge.

When I see the word US, I can only think of the US, regardless if it tries to have other meanings. So USS immediately mean US Ship or US Spaceship to me.

Carnac's Guide to Star Trek Fleet Command

Using The Pan Crew

Carnac | August 30, 2020 August 28, 2020 | Augments , Officers

For a while in Star Trek Fleet Command, if you wanted to increase the impulse speed of your ship, you had one option. The Klaa crew. This was especially useful in cleaning out an opponent’s base (when you had Stonn as one of your officers,) or in hunting as much overprotected Latinum as possible on Ferengi Monday .

Then, during the first section of the Outlaws Arc, we got three new Augment officers, Pan, Navi, and Rima. They did two things. One, with Pan as captain, due to their synergy levels, they give you even more speed than the Klaa crew. And two, with Rima or Navi as captain, they’re set up as a counter to any hull breach crew that you may be facing in PvP.

pan

Pan’s Captain’s Maneuver is “Getting Up To Speed”. This increases the Impulse speed of the ship by 20%. With full synergy of Navi and Pan, you can use this to increase your Impulse speed by 50%.

His officer ability is “Mistakes were Made”. which gives you a (25% 35% 45% 55% 65%) chance of applying a hull breach to your own ship. This sounds horrific, but it really isn’t. The hull breach by itself isn’t going to damage your ship. It’s just a condition that enables other officer’s abilities – both yours and your opponents.

So if Pan gives your ship a Hull Breach, Navi and Rima’s officer abilities will kick in… as will those of any officers on your opponent’s ships that require Hull Breach (like Chang, Kerla, Mara, etc.) So it’s a bit of a double-edged sword for both of you. However, this crew’s abilities are a little stronger than their opponents, so on balance, it’s a win for you if you’re using these Augments.

And again, if you’re going up against an officer who can give your ship a Hull Breach, like Gorkon , Azetbur , or Kang, they’re going to give you an even greater opportunity to set off your abilities.

navi uss star trek

Navi’s Captain’s Maneuver is “Drastic Measures.” At the start of each round, if the ship has a hull breach, Navi increases the Critical hit damage bonus by 20% for this round.

Depending on your opponent, and your officer levels, you might want to complement her with Khan instead of Rima. In short battles, Rima’s got an edge. But if you’ve got Khan giving you a 4% cumulative chance of a critical each time you’re hit, he’s the one to go to in longer battles.

Her officer ability is “Guardian Angel,” which gives you a (50% 65% 85% 110% 140%) bonus to armor, shield deflection and dodge when your ship has a hull breach.

Again, this is a prety great officer ability, greatly increasing your mitigation in battle, and reducing the damage your ship is going to be taking.

navi uss star trek

His captain’s maneuver is “You’ll Pay For That”: At the start of each round, if the ship has a hull breach, Rima increases the damage of the ship by 40%.

I think I like this maneuver a little more than Navi’s, though it’s fun how they complement each other. Both give one critical bonus, and one overall bonus.

Rima’s officer ability is “Systems Critical,” which increases your Critical hit chances by (5% 8% 10% 15% 20%) when your ship has a hull breach.

navi uss star trek

All three of these officers are original to Star Trek Fleet Command. Their backstory sets them as Augments, like Khan, from the 1990s. Pan is the experiment gone wrong. Navi is the nice Augment. Rima is the stealthy businessman.

In Greek mythology, Pan is the “god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds,  rustic music  and  impromptus , and companion of the  nymphs . He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a  faun  or  satyr . With his homeland in rustic  Arcadia , he is also recognized as the god of fields, groves, wooded glens and often affiliated with sex; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism. The word  panic ultimately derives from the god’s name.”

Navi is a character from the Legend of Zelda .

Rima is the Latin term for cleft, which might be a hint as to his character.

USS Enterprise Evolution in Photos: The Many Faces of Star Trek's Favorite Starship

The enterprise throughout history.

Star Trek Game

Starship USS Enterprise, serial number NCC-1701, of the United Federation of Planets, has captivated audiences since the debut of "Star Trek" on television in 1966. That fascination has continued to the present day, as the latest installment of the science-fiction franchise, "Star Trek Into Darkness," opens in the US on May 16, 2013. Here we take a look at ships bearing the name of Enterprise in many different incarnations.

USS Enterprise (Sailing Vessel)

USS Enterprise (Sailing Vessel)

The first of all US ships to bear the name of Enterprise was a Continental Navy sloop-of-war that served in the American Revolutionary War on Lake Champlain. Originally a British sloop named "George," it was captured by a small American force commanded by Colonel Benedict Arnold in 1775 and renamed. Later the US forces had to run the ship aground and destroy it in 1777 to avoid capture.

A long series of sea vessels were named Enterprise throughout history. The eighth US ship to bear the name was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The US Navy commissioned the giant vessel in 1962, which served until its deactivation in 2012. A new USS Enterprise (CVN-80) is scheduled to become operational in 2025. Regarding Star Trek, the naval warship may have inspired the name of the fictional starship. Also, in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," Uhura and Chekov visit the aircraft carrier Enterprise, though the filmmakers could not shoot aboard the actual ship.

NASA

In 1976, NASA's space shuttle Enterprise rolled out of the Palmdale manufacturing facilities, and was greeted by NASA officials and cast members from the original "Star Trek" television series. They are (L to R): NASA Administrator Dr. James D. Fletcher; DeForest Kelley, who portrayed Dr. "Bones" McCoy on the series; George Takei (Mr. Sulu); James Doohan (Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott); Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura); Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock); series creator Gene Roddenberry; an unnamed NASA official; and, Walter Koenig (Ensign Pavel Chekov).

GUEST BLOG: The Lineage of Ships That Bear The Name Enterprise

navi uss star trek

The Starship Enterprise NCC-1701 was the first fictional spacecraft to carry on the name of many vessels in English and U.S. history. There were actually two ships in the English Navy called the HMS Enterprize (and that's not a typo). The first was from 1743 and the second sailed in 1775. Fast forward to the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII and the USS Enterprise CV6 was our first Aircraft Carrier to carry the name Enterprise. In 1955, the second USS Enterprise CV65 took to sea. She was a massive aircraft carrier and the first of our nuclear-powered fleet. Fast forward again to 1966, and a new USS Enterprise would to take us into space… with Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek .

Little did TV viewers know at that time what they themselves would set into motion. The fan based continued to grow well after the show ended only after three seasons. So much in fact that in 1976 when NASA was getting ready to start production on the space shuttle, fans galore wrote the space administration demanding that they name the first shuttle "Enterprise." The requests were disregarded at first, but the fans would not let up and in the end they won -- and the first shuttle did in fact bare the name Enterprise.

It’s now 1978 and Star Trek: The Motion Picture is well into production. The USS Enterprise is back, with a major retrofit by Richard Taylor and Andy Probert. With the scope of a motion picture and a huge budget to work with, the ship’s interiors got extended and re-imagined to fit her new big-screen premiere. One of the new sets was called the recreation lounge or deck. This was a huge room for the crew to hang out in and get some rest and relaxation when off duty. One of the notable details of this room was a little alcove that featured some backlit drawings of ships and vessels named Enterprise. Rick Sternbach was asked to create the art work for this set and he illustrated the sailing ship, the aircraft carrier, the space shuttle, one of Matt Jefferies’ early rejected designs for the Enterprise and, finally, the starship Enterprise. This set would be redressed and relit for another scene in The Motion Picture : when the crew assembles to watch the deep-space footage of Vger and the attack on the Klingons. Although the set was a redress, Rick's drawings remained as a prominent feature.

navi uss star trek

Now let’s travel farther into the future, to 1987, and the airing of Roddenberry's next television adventure, Star Trek: The Next Generation . This series introduced us to a new crew and a new starship: the Enterprise NCC 1701-D. This was a bold design by Andy Probert, and also on board for this series were Rick Sternbach and newcomer Mike Okuda. For the show and the new ship, great set designs were conceived by Andy. One of my personal favorites was the introduction of the observation lounge. Well, it's not really that new because Andy did a version for The Motion Picture , but the set got very little screen time and was a bit overlooked. For his TNG version, the set is a curved room situated just behind the bridge. Carrying on with what was started in the rec room, the Enterprise lineage would be a major part of the design.

This time around, the drawings of the various incarnations of the Enterprise would be replaced with large 3D wall relief sculptures painted gold. This display concentrated more on the starships, with the exception of the CV65 Aircraft Carrier. As the seasons went on, the Enterprise-C would be added to the display. The "C" had not been designed when TNG began, so when it was introduced in a prominent episode the relief was added to the set.

Now, back to the time machine we go and let’s move forward to 1996 and the new Enterprise NCC-1701-E and the release of Star Trek: First Contact . The "E" was the next starship to traverse the heavens and with this new design came a new version of the observation lounge. The design and location were similar to the "D" and, in fact, the same windows were used for both sets -- with a bit of detail changes to give you the impression of there being two different ships. This was my third big Star Trek movie and it was a glorious ride. Working with my boss, Herman Zimmerman, was the highlight of the show and when we got to the observation lounge all the real fun began.

navi uss star trek

We were talking about the wall of Enterprise and how we were going to put up those reliefs again. I casually mentioned that for this one, why don't we make models and have them gold-plated to add a little something extra. Herman loved the idea and said, “How soon can you get them made?” “Haaa!” I replied. “I don't know, but I'll get right on them.” The hardest part about this project is that we were doing double duty between First Contact and Deep Space Nine , so there was not a lot of time to squeeze these ships in. Things got done quickly. I assembled everything that was available in kit or toy form; the Enterprise A, D, and the Original Series ship all were available in model kit form. The B was available through Playmates, leaving the C and the E to be made from scratch. I put the word out and a garage kit of the C emerged, making the E the only ship that had to be made from scratch.

Thankfully I was making a big study model of the E for the ILM model makers and, in the end, that model was used for the set. As the script progressed, a scene was added that these models were going to all be smashed by Captain Picard. This meant that we would need more than one set of models. So the next step was to make molds of everything and get a lot more gold plating done. The end results were great, especially under those quartz halogen lights. The sad day came and we had to watch them get repeatedly smashed for the scene...  Well, they all looked good intact and broken I had to say!

Two years later, production on Star Trek: Insurrection was in the beginning stages and again the observation lounge called for more gold ships. This time around, both the C and the E were available as kits, so we used those for the new masters. As the film progressed, the lounge set had to be redressed for a party scene and the new ships didn't make it into the set or the film.

Moving ahead another couple of years, to Star Trek Nemesis , we are back to the observation lounge in what would be the Big E's final mission. The lounge set got a big face lift and the addition of a much-larger display area for the Enterprise models. Instead of six ships, this time there were going to be 12. For the second case, we built the Voyager, the Excelsior, the Grissom, the Reliant and under construction were the Phoenix and the Defiant. The deadline for these models moved when the filming scheduled changed the set order, and the observation lounge got moved up considerably. To make a long story short, the additional models didn't make it to the set and instead the E models were duplicated in pairs on either side of the viewing screen.

navi uss star trek

At this same time, the series Enterprise was on the air and instead of an observation lounge, the new Enterprise NX-01 (designed by Doug Drexler) would have a captain's ready room. This was a small set situated just off of the side of the bridge. The size of the set determined that models would consume too much space, so I created art for the set. The script called for five pieces of art, so what was illustrated was the HMS Enterprise, both of the U.S. carriers, the space shuttle and, finally, the NX-01. Once on stage, only four prints would fit in the case, so the WWII (CV-6) version of the USS Enterprise was scratched.

navi uss star trek

OK, then, one last trip into the future and this story will be complete. For this we travel to 2012 and onto the set of J.J. Abrams’ second installment: Star Trek Into Darkness . For this lineage we find ourselves in the admiral’s office where very prominently displayed is a set of accurately painted models depicting man’s history of flight. Karen the set decorator came over to my office and asked what models would be used to show this Star Trek lineage, and “Can we find them or do we have to build them? Oh and how much do you think they will cost, so I can put them in my budget?” I said, “We’ll, I'll make you a list and see what we can do with pricing and what is available vs. what you have to build.”

So I made her a list of 22 ships and planes and gave her a rough budget on what she could buy pre-made -- which was a good majority of the ships. Still, there were a handful to build from scratch though, and this worried her. About this time Andy Gore from QMX collectibles was over visiting Karen. He saw the list and offered to make all the ships for her. She gladly accepted and off he went. He came back a while later with a beautiful array of models covering the reality of flight within the imaginary Star Trek universe. The final models got some fantastic screen time and set a new standard for the Enterprise lineage.

And now for this special edition of the Red Dress Series, we’re going to play the blues with Miss Jessica Rammell of Torrington, Wyoming. Jessica and I met by accident in the hallways of Eastern Wyoming College. I was going to a meeting and saw Jess sitting on a bench wearing some very cool heeled boots and sporting a perfect 60’s-esque hairdo. On my way back from the meeting she was still there, and I asked if she would perhaps like to do some modeling for a retro Star Trek photo shoot. She responded with “That sounds fun” and told me she used to model years before.

This was about a month ago and we spent a while trying to get schedules and the weather to cooperate. Finally, it all came together for a great shoot out at a place called Grey Rock Ranch, owned and operated by the Camp Guernsey Army base. Col. Knowlton is the head of operations there, and he has let me do a couple of shoots on the tanks and aircraft they have on the main base. For this outing he let us venture into an area of the property covered with these very alien-looking natural rock formations. This place screams Star Trek and is a vast and sprawling landscape highlighted by these incredible rocks and mesas.

The sun sets at 4:30 p.m., so we started shooting around 2:30. We were lucky to have such a beautiful day, especially because we’d already had a couple of winter snowstorms and the big winter stuff is going to hit at any time now.  Anyways, we had a great shoot and Jessica did a fabulous job putting her spin on the Trek theme.  Coming in at 6 feet tall, she has a very powerful and commanding presence. That, combined with her posing talents and lovely expressions, made every picture great. Jess wrote a brief bio for you all to read. So here it is and I hope you enjoy her story and the pix to follow.

Jessica Rammell was raised in Idaho and Wyoming. She is the youngest of four siblings, and a country girl who loves riding horses, camping and outdoor sports, and is also a violinist and fiddler, as well as a fan of sci-fi books and movies. Jessica is now attending EWC, where she is actively involved in the student senate and has been the student representative for debate, skills USA, and computers. She is currently studying web and graphic design, photography and the arts. Jessica works as an assistant for her father, who is a veterinarian, as she attends college.

So until next time… stay tuned for more and God bless.

Every Version Of The USS Enterprise Ranked Worst To Best

The USS Enterprise refit in drydock in

The name "USS Enterprise" has a long and storied history. Although two Enterprises briefly served the Colonial Forces and Continental Navy , the first true United States Navy vessel to bear the title came into service in 1799, followed by a schooner in 1831, a screw sloop-of-war in 1874, the 1938 Yorktown-class aircraft carrier that fought with distinction in World War II, and the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in 1961. But barely three years after that last ship was commissioned, Gene Roddenberry gave the name to a fictional spacecraft: the Federation starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701.

Prior to the original Enterprise boldly going to NBC in September 1966, you'd be hard-pressed to find a spaceship in film or on television that didn't look like a rocket, a flying saucer, or something cobbled together out of commercial model kits. Two years before "2001: A Space Odyssey" debuted, the starship Enterprise broke the mold, and science fiction hasn't been the same since.

The Star Trek spinoffs and reboots that arrived in the intervening decades have introduced many other starships named Enterprise, but how do they all stack up? Starships are more than a pretty face, so ranking them must take into account their demonstrated on-screen performance and special features in addition to their visual appeal. With that criteria in mind, here are all the main starships named Enterprise, ranked.

11. Enterprise J: Universe-class Pizza Cutter

The Universe-class Enterprise NCC-1701-B screen Star Trek Generations

Although this list won't include every Enterprise glimpsed in one-off alternate timelines, one deserves a mention because the episode in which it appears suggests that it's from a future that a hostile force wishes to prevent from happening, so we might assume that it's the timeline that's supposed to occur. That ship would be the 26th century's NCC-1701-J, which features briefly in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Azati Prime." That's the one where Captain Archer is shown a history-defining battle in order to convince him to change his course of action.

We see almost nothing of this ship — just a corridor and a window looking out on a swath of her underbelly. As the most briefly seen of all the Enterprises, we have effectively zero information about her capabilities, other than the fact that she fires beams that we presume are phasers. Our only on-screen clue to her overall configuration is a diagram that appears on a screen; from that, one can surmise that this supposed Universe-class starship is awkward and ugly, looking like it's been flattened by a steamroller a la Judge Doom in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" For all these reasons, she can only land in last place.

10. Enterprise 1701-B: The Hybrid

The starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B docked Star Trek Generations

Throughout the first four seasons of "The Next Generation," a display in the Enterprise-D's observation lounge featured six vessels, each one representing a different Enterprise. Amongst these were an Excelsior-type ship that was presumably the 1701-B. However, it wasn't until 1994 and the film "Star Trek: Generations" that the B would actually appear on screen.

The 1701-B's single outing is brief and figuring out her capabilities is mere guesswork, as her cruise, already nothing more than a publicity stunt, is interrupted by an actual emergency for which the not-quite-fully outfitted vessel is ill-prepared.

What we can judge is the ship's appearance. We see next to nothing of the B's interiors, and the exterior is simply the USS Excelsior model with a few fresh modifications. In an attempt to make the Enterprise-B something new, the existing miniature had extra bits glommed on, most notably a pair of oversized impulse engine blisters that bracket the already large impulse deck, both foolishly aimed at the warp nacelles. Worse, to add something to the ship that could be visibly damaged without harming the model , a flared beltline was added to the B's hull, which utterly destroys the lines of the ship.

9. Enterprise 1701-C: The Compromised Class

The Ambassador-class starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C as depicted in the "Yesterday's Enterprise" episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

The aforementioned display on the Enterprise-D suggested that the 1701-C would look like something between the Excelsior-class ship and the Galaxy-class Enterprise. In fact, as "The Next Generation" season 1 consulting senior illustrator Andrew Probert told Star Trek Futures , if he'd had his way, we would have seen a ship of the C's class (which he dubbed "Ambassador-class") appear as the USS Fearless in the episode "Where No One Has Gone Before." Probert was overruled, however, and stock footage of the Excelsior model was used instead.

When the 1701-C finally appeared in the third season episode "Yesterday's Enterprise," she wasn't quite the ship that Probert had imagined. In a rush to get a miniature built quickly, the ship's design was greatly simplified , and the engineering hull's compound curves eliminated for expediency. The result looks less like a progression from the B to the D, and more like it belongs between the A and the B.

Given how utterly beat up she is upon popping out of the space anomaly of the week, and since she's destined to be destroyed in order to set history straight, it's difficult to gauge the ship's capabilities. Again, that design is really all we have to go on.

8. Enterprise 1701-A: The Changeling

The starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A as depicted in the film

After the scuttling of the refit Enterprise in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," many fans expected that the replacement ship would be the "great experiment" known as the USS Excelsior, with her transwarp drive. The very end of "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" plays on that expectation, showing the Enterprise crew heading towards the Excelsior before pulling a gotcha and revealing an Enterprise identical to her late predecessor in every way but her registry: NCC-1701-A.

However, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," which is often considered one of the worst films in the series , demonstrated that the A was a lemon and a joke. It was only in its sequel, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," that her capabilities were demonstrated and her reputation redeemed.

The ship's interiors change drastically between the two films. The A has a "The Next Generation"-like aesthetic in "The Final Frontier," and feels like a cramped warship in "The Undiscovered Country." They're basically different ships. A mix of new sets and standing sets then in use for "The Next Generation" resulted in the mismatch; such inconsistencies in both performance and design merit her less than stellar position here.

7. Enterprise NX-01: The Early Bird

The starship Enterprise NX-01 as depicted in the

Unlike the other Enterprises discussed here, the NX-01's name was not preceded by the letters USS (United Space Ship), but that's not enough to leave her off this list.

If we were merely ranking these starships by their technological sophistication, the "Star Trek: Enterprise" flagship would land squarely at the bottom, being a veritable antique. Comparing her to even the original NCC-1701 would be like comparing the first Navy flattop to a modern supercarrier. However, taking into account the time in which the ship was built and the fact that she's merely a prototype, Captain Archer's Enterprise more than distinguishes herself.

As repeatedly demonstrated in the series' four seasons, the first Starfleet ship named Enterprise was tough and capable. Her interior detailing rests comfortably and logically between NASA's design sense and that of the Federation. The ship's exterior design isn't quite as good, and she doesn't have as many good angles as most of her fellow Enterprises. In addition, like the E, she suffers from looking terrible in profile, with an undistinguished silhouette.

6. Enterprise 1701-E: The Borg Buster

The Sovereign-class starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E as depicted in the film

Following the ignominious destruction of the D in "Star Trek: Generations" and the trashing of the Enterprise's main bridge set for that film, a new ship had to be built for "Star Trek: First Contact." The result was the Sovereign-class Enterprise 1701-E, which would go on to star in "Star Trek: Insurrection" and "Star Trek: Nemesis."

In her three cinematic adventures, the E performs admirably, and avoids getting completely blown to bits despite facing vessels vastly more powerful and more numerous. "First Contact" features a lot of action, but, as is ever the case of the movie Enterprises, we never really get to see her function as an exploration vessel.

Appropriately, the ship's interiors eschew the hotel-like aspects of her predecessor in favor of a harder, less comfortable look. Externally, she was designed to look leaner and meaner than any other Enterprise, with angles and swept back elements suggesting a forward momentum. The result is a ship that looks great from above, behind, and a few other angles, but ungainly in others — her profile suggests that she's been stepped on. The design also suffers from one of the B's flaws: oversized impulse engines whose exhaust ports point too close to the warp nacelles.

5. Enterprise 1701: Kelvin Times

The starship USS Enterprise from the first of the three Kelvin timeline films:

While it's supposedly the same ship each time, the Enterprise looks somewhat different in all three of the Kelvin timeline films (2009's "Star Trek," "Star Trek Into Darkness," and "Star Trek Beyond"); the "Beyond" variant in particular is a rather extensive overhaul. How much you like any of these rests on how big a fan of "ample nacelles" you are, but as a cohesive design they're all a bit of a miss, with a saucer section that appears mismatched with the rest of the ship, an engineering hull that's too far forward, and nacelles that are too close together.

On the other hand, the interiors are gorgeous and roomy with plenty of points of visual interest. You might hate the brewery-like engineering spaces featured in the first film and think the bridge looks like an Apple Store (it doesn't), but the designs are fantastic. overall.

How good this Enterprise is as a functioning starship remains questionable, however, as she gets thrashed repeatedly in all three films, and is ultimately chopped to bits and replaced by a briefly glimpsed A of her own in the closing moments of "Beyond."

4. Pike's Enterprise 1701: Strange New Starship

The starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as depicted in the

"Strange New Worlds" revised the Pike-era Enterprise NCC-1701, which was first introduced in its current form on "Star Trek: Discovery." That ship had a thankless job: It needed to satisfy old school fans, who expected a ship that honored the original '60s model, while also featuring a more modern design to satiate newer viewers. As such, she harkens back to both the Enterprise of "The Original Series" and the refitted version from "The Motion Picture." The spinning nacelle caps and copper deflector dish come from the former, and the swept back pylons and glowing engine grills recall the latter. She's a handsome ship both inside and out, with detailed, roomy interiors that rank up there with the Kelvin timeline's Enterprise in terms of design and visual appeal.

Sadly, Pike's vessel seems to have a glass jaw, getting repeatedly beaten up in the first season. Her reach is apparently worse than an old U.S. Navy battleship's, too, as objects that are visible in the same shot are somehow "out of weapons range." Season two of "Strange New Worlds" should clarify how good of a ship this Enterprise ultimately is. Let's hope she learns how to take a punch.

3. The Refit Enterprise 1701: The Pearlescent Beauty

The refit USS Enterprise as depicted in

The redesigned Enterprise from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is, in a word, gorgeous. From her subtle curves and art deco influences to her spectacular pearlescent finish, she's a great looking ship.

Sadly, she doesn't age gracefully in the two following films. She's scarred in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and is inexplicably even more battered at the beginning of "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." That "Motion Picture" shine literally fades away to a flatter look throughout the second film, likely because of a change in visual effects companies and a dulling down of her paintjob. By the third film she's lost her luster, and then she's blown to smithereens.

Still by the end of that first movie, the refit ship feels ready for any adventure. Her shields are capable of withstanding the V'ger energy bolts that chew up Klingon ships in seconds, and she can torpedo mountain-sized asteroids into rubble with a single shot. Her capabilities diminish in the next two installments, though; were she not treated like a tired old punching bag in those films, she'd be number two on this list.

2. Enterprise 1701-D: The Galaxy Class Swoop

The Galaxy-class starship Enterprise NCC-1701-D, seen from below and behind from the

Fans are sharply divided on the Galaxy-class NCC-1701-D. Some think she's awkward and ungainly, while others argue that she's the embodiment of "technology unchained." The D stands out among other Enterprises like a Luigi Colani car in a parking lot full of Toyotas: If nothing else, it's distinctive. Of all Enterprises, she's the most carefully thought out in terms of features, from her transporter emitters to her escape pods to her ability to split into two independent vehicles.

One problem with ranking this ship's visual appeal is that the two main models used to portray it are fairly dissimilar, with the smaller one making it look like the ship has been binging Cheetos. The original 6-foot miniature is an A+, but the fatter 4-footer is a B-. Whichever model you're looking at, however, the main visual sin this Enterprise commits is a saucer that's so big that it can entirely hide the rest of the ship, making high forward angles a no-no. The ship's interiors are a mixed bag, too — some fans complain that it feels too much like a hotel or a cruise ship, and not an interstellar vessel built to boldly go into the final frontier.

1. Enterprise 1701: The Original

The original 11-foot model of the starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701 from the original

Polls indicate that "The Original Series" is still the most popular Star Trek show . Accordingly, the OG USS Enterprise belongs at the top of this list.

Despite her vintage, the original 1701 is a badass. She always manages to go faster than she's designed to without flying apart. She's capable of glassing a planet's surface ("A Taste of Armageddon"), and blowing an unshielded starship to dust with a single phaser blast ("Day of the Dove"). She survives galaxy-enveloping energy barriers and antimatter-spewing planet killers, and always comes out on top.

Visually, interiors are her weak point, even making allowances for a '60s series. Outside of the bridge, the cabins, and engineering, too many corridors and compartments are visually flat and feel unlived in. Externally, she might look simple to audiences accustomed to heavily textured hulls with complex curvatures, but the genius of her design is in her simplicity; she combines familiar icons of space travel — rockets and flying saucers — in a fashion that instantly tells you that not only is this is a spacecraft, but it's one intended to operate entirely outside of the confines of atmosphere and gravity. That, along with a paint job that resembles a Navy cruiser, communicates what she is at a glance. That's brilliant, and why the original Enterprise is still number one.

DS9 Brought Back (& Changed) 3 Classic TOS Klingons

Recasting star trek: ds9 for a movie reboot, 10 star trek female characters that made tng better.

  • DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" episode pokes fun at Klingon differences in a lighthearted and humorous manner.
  • Worf's comical explanation of the Klingon-Tribble War adds levity to tackling Star Trek lore within the crossover.
  • Deep Space Nine skillfully addresses Klingon oddities through witty dialogue, honoring TOS history with a comedic touch.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's crossover episode with Star Trek: The Original Series pointed out 2 weird things about Klingons. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 6, "Trials and Tribble-ations", the Bajoran Orb of Time unexpectedly sends Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and the USS Defiant crew back to 105 years earlier in the Star Trek timeline . Against the backdrop of Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 15, "The Trouble With Tribbles", Sisko's crew must prevent Klingon spy Arne Darvin (Charlie Brill) from assassinating Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) , while dealing with the USS Enterprise's historical Tribble infestation.

"Trials and Tribble-ations" is a lighter entry among the weighty episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5. Winking at the audience, characters make humorous references to Star Trek history as if it's a precursor to Star Trek: Lower Decks . Of note are Captain Kirk's 17 temporal violations, the swap between gold and red for Starfleet uniform division colors, and the way that DS9 's characters revere the crew of the original USS Enterprise as historical heroes. Deep Space Nine preserves TOS ' visual style, with brightly colored 23rd-century Starfleet uniforms, uncomplicated fight choreography, and basic makeup for aliens — especially the Klingons.

Three of the Klingon captains who faced Kirk's Enterprise were united for a revenge mission in a classic Jadzia Dax episode of Star Trek: DS9.

DS9’s Star Trek: TOS Crossover Made 2 Different Kinds Of Klingons A Joke

"we do not discuss it with outsiders".

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's crossover with Star Trek: The Original Series makes a joke out of the different kinds of Klingons in Star Trek . While Captain Sisko and Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) keep an eye on Captain Kirk, Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois) and Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) monitor the Klingons, who are also taking leave at Space Station K-7. Their waitress (Leslie Ackerman) confirms that the swarthy, smooth-headed visitors carousing across the room are Klingons , and all 24th-century eyes turn to Worf, demanding an explanation. Bristling, a visibly uncomfortable Worf only says, "We do not discuss it with outsiders!"

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 19, "Blood Oath", Klingons Kor (John Colicos), Kang (Michael Ansara), and Koloth (William Campbell) appear with cranial ridges, despite having smooth heads when they were introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series .

At the time of Star Trek: The Original Series , the Klingon makeup was minimal, consisting of little more than face paint and distinctive facial hair. By the time of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , prosthetic makeup technology had advanced enough to give the Klingons a more alien look. According to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Klingons were always meant to have ridged foreheads, and viewers should imagine the new look when watching TOS reruns. Since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine preserves TOS ' visual style, however, it falls on Worf to dodge explaining the difference, which he does in the most amusingly Klingon way possible.

Klingons Went To War With Tribbles According To Worf

"tell me, do they still sing songs of the great tribble hunt".

According to Worf, the Klingon Empire went to war with their arch enemies, the Tribbles, after Scotty (James Doohan) beamed the remaining Tribbles aboard the Klingon cruiser in Star Trek: The Original Series' "The Trouble With Tribbles". Odo finds it hard to believe that the most feared warrior race in the galaxy would vow vengeance upon the cute, cuddly creatures and mocks Worf's claim, but there's a good reason that Klingons hate Tribbles . In Star Trek: The Animated Series ' "More Tribbles, More Troubles", Klingon Captain Koloth says Tribbles are responsible for "ecological sabotage" , which tracks with the Tribbles' propensity to consume and multiply.

The Klingon-Tribble War is noted again in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, episode 13, "A Tribble Called Quest", with Klingon scientist Dr. K'ruvang (Jorge Gutiérrez) stranded on a planet ravaged by Tribbles.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine could have ignored the Klingon in the room, as it were, but chose to go a different route with its Star Trek: The Original Series crossover episode. In "Trials and Tribble-ations", the explanations of Klingon lore fall to Worf. Worf's confirmation that Tribbles are an out-of-control invasive species is filled with vitriol, and Worf's embarrassment over the cosmetic differences in old and new Klingons are both memorable moments. Michael Dorn's delivery in each instance only adds to the episode's levity, so Star Trek: Deep Space Nine makes addressing these 2 weird things about Klingons funny instead of heavy-handed.

US Navy says destroyer made routine Taiwan Strait transit

Thursday, 22 Aug 2024

BEIJING (Reuters) -The United States Navy said on Thursday the destroyer USS Ralph Johnson made a routine Taiwan Strait transit on Aug. 22 in accordance with international law, according to its statement.

The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army said it organised naval and air forces to monitor the entire passage of the U.S. vessel.

"Troops in the theatre remain on high alert at all times and will resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability," spokesperon Naval Colonel Li Xi said in a statement.

Prometheus class

The Prometheus -class was a highly classified Federation starship designed for deep space tactical assignments. It was one of the most advanced Starfleet vessels in operation during the later half of the 24th century , as well as later use in the 25th century , and in an alternate timeline of the 26th century .

History [ ]

The class prototype , the USS Prometheus , was launched from the Beta Antares Ship Yards in the Antares sector on stardate 50749.5 . At the time of its launch, the Prometheus was so highly classified that only four people in all of Starfleet were trained to operate the prototype.

Later that year, the prototype starship was hijacked and stolen by Romulan Tal Shiar operatives, in an attempt to take the starship back to Romulus for study. This plot was foiled after the EMH from the USS Voyager was unknowingly downloaded to the ship's computer from the Delta Quadrant . ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

Battle of Procyon V

In an alternate timeline , vessels of the Prometheus -class were among the Federation fleet that engaged the forces of the Sphere-Builders during the Battle of Procyon V in the 26th century. ( ENT : " Azati Prime ")

In another alternate timeline, a Prometheus -class starship made first contact with the Vau N'Akat sometime after 2384 . ( PRO : " Preludes ")

Technical data [ ]

Propulsion system [ ].

The warp drive of the Prometheus -class made the ships of this class faster than any other starship in the fleet at the time in the mid 2370s . The warp drive was capable of maintaining speeds exceeding warp 9.9 . ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Defensive systems [ ]

The Prometheus -class was designed with an unprecedented level of automation, and, combined with its advanced tactical systems, was one of the most powerful combat ships in the Alpha Quadrant . The primary battle systems on board the Prometheus included regenerative shielding , ablative hull armor , phasers , and photon torpedoes .

Firing a photon torpedo

A unique feature included in the Prometheus design was the multi-vector assault mode , which allowed the ship to split into three semi-independent sections that could each deliver massive force against an enemy target. All three sections were warp-capable . In this mode, the Prometheus could easily disable a Nebula -class at warp , or a D'deridex -class on the field of battle. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ") While other starship classes had similar capabilities, such as the Galaxy -class with its saucer separation feature, generally the saucer section of such classes had no warp drive and limited weaponry. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " The Arsenal of Freedom ", " The Best of Both Worlds, Part II ")

Additional systems [ ]

In addition to standard automation systems, the Prometheus -class design also featured holoemitters on every deck , which allowed the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram (Mark II) to access all areas of the ship (most EMHs were confined to sickbay only).

Primary controls for the ventilation system were located in Jefferies tube 17, which was located five decks up from sickbay. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Interior design [ ]

Main bridge [ ].

Prometheus class bridge

View of the Prometheus -class starship's main bridge

The fact that the Prometheus -class was mainly designed for combat was reflected in the design of its bridge . The bridge was designed with efficiency in mind, providing the commanding officer with visual access to all major stations when seated in the command chair . Directly in front of the captain's chair , sunken down with three steps, was the location of the helm on the port side and another station to starboard , combined in one large console . The latter was used to activate multi-vector assault mode and assess the status of ship systems, among other tasks. Both officers shared an unobstructed view of the main viewscreen with the commanding officer . All other stations were mounted against the wall , running around the entire length of the room . Directly aft of the captain's chair was the master systems display , with ops and tactical stations to starboard and port, respectively. To the captain's left and right, beyond these stations, were doors that may have provided access to the turbolift system. Further forward still, on either side of the main view screen, were two more stations, which also faced away from the center of the bridge. The starboard one displayed the same graphics as a typical engineering station of the era and provided an alarm when a warp core breach was imminent. Such an accident could quickly be prevented using this station as well. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Sickbay [ ]

Prometheus five ship design

An early rendering of the Prometheus splitting into five ships

The Prometheus -class was designed by Star Trek: Voyager senior illustrator Rick Sternbach and rendered as a CGI model by Foundation Imaging 's Adam "Mojo" Lebowitz and Brandon MacDougall . Though the script for "Message in a Bottle" originally called for the Prometheus to split into five ships, the producers decided this may be difficult to make work on screen, and trimmed it down to three. Very early in the design process, Sternbach decided on a four-nacelle design, so the engineering section could easily split along the horizontal axis, into what Sternbach's sketches labeled the "Upper Warp Hull (UWH)" and the "Lower Warp Hull (LWH)." ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , pp. 92-93)

What had started as a Voyager -style shuttlebay door was changed to an " Enterprise-1701 -refit set of door fans." The nacelles were intentionally reminiscent of the Sovereign -class , with additional inspiration from the X-29 and Su-37 jet aircraft . ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , p. 93)

A production comparison chart would list the Prometheus as 1,360 feet (414 meters ) in length. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , p. 93) A length of 414 meters was also listed in Eden FX materials. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 24 , p. 54)

The Prometheus -class interiors were designed by Voyager production designer Richard James , using re-dressed portions of the re-created USS Excelsior bridge that James had made for " Flashback ", the USS Voyager sickbay, and a number of new sets. ↑ Dialogue in "Message in a Bottle" suggests that warp 9.9, at which the Prometheus was travelling, was too fast for any other ship in Starfleet to catch up with before the ship crossed into the Neutral Zone . The Star Trek Encyclopedia , 3rd ed., p. 649 suggests that a speed of warp 9.9 makes it " the fastest vessel in Starfleet. " The Star Trek: Starship Spotter (p. 69) lists the maximum speed as warp 9.99, which corresponds more closely with the idea of the Prometheus being the fastest ship in the fleet, since the Intrepid -class had been previously established as capable of warp 9.975.

The Star Trek: Starship Spotter (p. 69) lists the following details and specifications:

  • Dimensions: Length, 415 meters; beam, 170 meters; draft, 113 meters
  • Crew complement: 141 persons
  • Velocity: cruising speed, warp 9; maximum speed, warp 9.99
  • Standard mission: 1 year
  • Warp systems: Four LF-50 Mod 1 Advanced Linear Warp Drive Units, One LF-12X Mod 2 Compact Linear Warp Drive Unit
  • Weapons: Thirteen Type XII Collimated Phaser Arrays, Three Mk 95 Direct-Fire Photon Torpedo Tubes
  • Primary computer system: M-16 Bio-neural gel pack Isolinear III Processor
  • Embarked craft: two shuttlecraft, four shuttlepods

Apocrypha [ ]

In the Deep Space Nine relaunch series series of novels Avatar, Book One and Book Two , a Prometheus -class starship named USS Cerberus ( β ) served as Admiral William Ross ' personal flagship , replacing the USS Bellerophon .

In the game Star Trek Online , the class is categorized as an "advanced escort ", with derived classes named Cerberus ( β ), Hephaestus ( β ), and Phoenix ( β ). When the class was initially added to the game, it did not feature multi-vector assault mode. This was added at a later date via a "multi-vector assault module" console and also included an alternate ship configuration.
