My guess is that you have an airbag?
no, i don't have an airbag.

Under your dashboard you will see a few connectors. The connector from the handle will only fit 1 of them (it's a white one with only 2 pins allthough it could fit 8 pins) Place back the plastic part of the steeringcolom. Do you have a manual gearbox? Or automatic? Cause when manual you need an extra switch at your clutch. Then you need to place the bracket for the switch to the pedalbox and click the switch in it. There will be an other white connector of 2 pins, wich will fit in that connector. When all installed place back the under part of the dashboard. When finished, take for a testdrive. It should function at 50km/h, that's about 31m/h. Oow... And don't forget to place back your steeringwheel...

So Twism, have you installed your cruise control kit yet in full? Want to see those pics man. I've so far ordered the ecu off ebay, and got the lever switch from a secondhand 7 series (should work no prob, right?). It seems my 525 has some of the wiring, but not all. Switch connection is there, actuator connector is there, but not the blue one that goes to the ecu, so need to get that.

The connector you need is behind your left footwell, behind the speaker.

Opened the left footwell

and got this. At first I became happy, thinking its the cruise control ecu. took it out and checked the number. The black box with blue connector is apparently the ACU, has to do with the A/C if I'm not mistaken. Now there are a few things I would like to know. a) the blue connector for the ACU looks like the one for the CC ECU. So where is the connector for the CC ECU? And what is that other blue and white connector? Is the little white connector at the top left (with 2 wires) the clutch switch connector? If so, why the heck is it in the left footwell! (We have right hand drive cars.) Do you have the ECU yet?

The white connector is for your soundsystem as good as I can see. The white connector for your clutchswitch has to be on top of your clutch.
my ECU is on the way as well, hopefully it will be here today or tomorrow. Where did you get yours? (got mine on ebay) I can't seem to find the clutch switch connector. Opened up below the steering colom and footpedals but nada. Is it where all the other wires are, or is it tied up somewhere up and behind the pedals? You recon that other connector is for the sound system, interesting. What for? (sorry for all the questions, but you know what its like to find something new on an old toy. I dont know what it is but I want it!!)

I have just purchased the car, previously I have owned Honda's which being Honda not may things went wrong. Thanks

e34 cruise control

What year E39 do you have? If it's a 1997 or 1998, your cruise control unit could be bad. If it's 1999 or later, we need to ask some more questions, such as if your car is a manual.

Thanks marti5 great link. My 528i is a 1996 model the first of the E39, brought it cheap and slowly bringing it back to its former self. I carnt understand plebs who buy a good car and then let it deteriate arround them. I also have a radio problem which I see is another common fault. Thanks gin for your imputs. Cheers from down under Oz Ray

My guess would be your cruise control module, or possibly the cable from the module to the throttle body.

Thanks Prof Thanks again for your imputs everyone.

disengaging cruise control I'm having a problem with the cruise control light disengaging too on my 98 540i auto. Iv'e pulled apart the actuator and there appears to be nothing wrong inside, all cercuitry is fine. I tested one of the motors in the unit, it to is fine... maybe it's the other one? I also see it could be the brake light switch, how will I test if this is faulty? All lights are working correctly on the car. can anyone help with this problem

First off, see if the passenger side vanity mirror light is working in the sun visor if not its your ignition switch, seriously! next, From my experience...cruise control problems are the first indicator of an electrical problem. It seems to be extremely sensitive to low voltage. First thing...clean your battery terminals. Make sure the connections are good and tight. Find where the negative battery terminal mounts to the chassis and use sandpaper or plumbers cloth to clean up that connection. Then, go under the hood. On the passenger side, toward the front, you'll see some black plastic connectors with a bunch of brown wires. Unbolt the harnesses from the chassis and rough-up the connections with sandpaper to provide a great ground for the components that the wires serve. Lastly, you'll find the ground/chassis connection for the DME computer just beneath the passenger side cabin air filter. Take it off, rough up the connections and tighten her down. Now see if your cruise works any better. If it does not...check the voltage on the battery...it may be time for a new one. Next step would be to check voltage with it running to determine if the alternator is on it's way out. Good luck.

thanks marti5 My drivers side doesn't work could this be a problem? Thanks very much I'll go thru your suggestions tomorrow.

Could well be as you are on the other side of the car, that would make it here the passenger side, so I would say its your ignition switch, which is not the barrel its self but is a switch at the end of the barrel. If you send me the last 7 digits of your VIN I will send you a diagram or you can look for it yourself at : RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog

It is nice information.

Were actually right hand drive here in Oz. could this still be the problem or is it specific to passenger side vanity lights? I found the switch on pelican parts for $56. might just have to try it and see if it fixes the prob. It's so much cheaper than replacing the actuator like my mechanic said, his price would be over $700. From pelican parts I think they are half that but $56 is much better I'm just about to run thru the list of things you said to check. Thanks again

Oh yea ! right hand side, I must have had a brain lapse for a second!!, anyway the last one I dealt with the passenger mirror didn't work, when we changed the switch the cruise worked and the mirror light came one, this was on a 7 series so maybe its the other way around on a 5 ??? worth a try and they do go sometime so at least you will know that's not the problem and wont be for a long time to come.

E34 Engine HELP!! Or, "Shouldn't this cable be connected to something?"

  • Add to quote
  • One pic is from below the tube;
  • one is from the drivers side, the others from the pass
  • The attachable end of the cable is just behind and above the fan (NOTE: THE FAN SHROUD HAS BEEN REMOVED IN THIS PIX):

e34 cruise control

Is it the cruise control cable . Does you cruise control work ? Sent from my Desire HD using Bimmer App

Also but I'm not sure about the model u have , wondering if that is also a kick down cable Sent from my Desire HD using Bimmer App

P.S. Is that a broken fan blade I see? You better replace that before it throws off your waterpump bearing. Should be 3 hex head screws on the front of the fan clutch. You may have to remove the shroud as well.

e34 cruise control

If the gas petal throttle works i would say cruise control secondary throttle cable. I would get a Bentleys Manual for that BMW for best results.

Could it be the cruise control actuator? see this parts like and let me know what you think. http://data.bmrparts.com/bmwparts/BMW_CRUISE_CONTROL/BMW_530i_4DR_E34_CRUISE_CONTROL_Actuator_44_65711378315.html

e34 cruise control

Yes, that's the cruise control cable. There is supposed to be a plastic bracket that sets in the hole below the intake. I took some pictures of mine the other day (see below). Definitely get that part on order! Sent from my Droid Incredible

Auto part Vehicle Engine Car Fuel line

Yup, the plastic fan is much easier to replace than the waterpump. You will probably extend the life of the WP by doing so. Just follow what I said above to replace the fan without removing the clutch. Use allen keys and a screwdriver handle.

Not the cruise control cable. That cable comes from your ASC actuator. You will note you now have a yellow triangle with ! when you start the car. This is because the actuator has no "feedback/tension" on startup self test. Hard to tell from your picture but there should be a threaded plastic sleeve that passes through the notched holed bracket. If you cannot reconnect then secure cable away from fan. Car is safe to drive you just have no traction control.

I'm going to start a new thread to continue this conversation.... http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6971970#post6971970 join me, won't you?

Ah, overlooked the ASC system for the newer models. Glad that is settled.

Ok, question pertaining to this cable. My car runs like crap when it is in it's plastic holder. But when I take the cable out of the plastic holder and it rests against the manifold, it runs like a champ. Any ideas? I believe the cable controls the intake flap. So it seems that the car runs better when the flap is more closed. Does this mean the computer is running a bad air/fuel mixture causing it to bog down, quite noticeably? Would this then indicate a bad MAF sensor? Any ideas would be appreciated.

e34 cruise control

Cable should not hold flap partly closed. Now you know why it was discnected. I guess it (the cable) has not been correctlt fitted.

Should be adjustable. Keep looking for an adjuster nut somewhere.

well i wasgoing to posrt saying that definately looks like the cruise control cable, but everyone else already did!

As the title says, this is the installation of cruise control for the stated models which don't have the proper factory harness for it. The necessary stuff consists of cruise control ECU module, the ACTUATOR and the stalk which goes beneath the wiper stalk. All these components must be from the same year, and it doesn't matter if it comes from the e36, e34 or e32 but you can't combine something from these three, thus, you can't combine the stalk from the e34 with the actuator from the e36. Everything must be taken from the same car. Today, I installed the cruise control into an e34 M20. I included the diagrams with the pictures, so if anyone needs any further info I'm willing to share. This device to function correctly uses the signal from the dashboard for the speed, and the signals from the clutch switch and break switch for its deactivation. I was out of luck to find the proper harness, so I had to retrofit my own harness, wire by wire to the connectors which you can see on the pictures.

Hi how are you? I know it's an old post from several years ago, but it serves as a reference because I want to do the same with an e34 M20B20 that I acquired a few days ago. I would like to know if you still have the complete diagram for the connection of the same, and if you have photos of the installation process. thank you!

Wiring diagrams (for the US market, but it's mostly the same) can be found here . One interesting thing I noticed is that the cruise control doesn't talk to either the engine or trans computer; as long as it gets a speed signal from the diff, it's agnostic about what makes the diff turn. Apart from the clutch cancel switch, there's no difference between the auto and manual cruise setups, and if you rig up the cable and actuator, you can have cruise control with any engine/trans swap as long as you keep the E34 diff and speed sensor.

  2. e34 530i Cruise Control Fail

e34 530i Cruise Control Fail. I am trying to fix my dad's cruise control, but other than a massive amount of posts out there regarding "yup it's broken" or "it's really hard to fix" or "I don't know how to fix it", I could find NO data regarding the cruise control system. The only thing I found was clutch and brake switches, and broken gears in ...

  7. E34 525tds, cruise control retrofit, is there guide to this?

5 posts · Joined 2011. #2 · Jul 31, 2011. Because the tds has no throttle cable, there is no actuator like on the petrol e34s. So all you need is a cruise control switch (it looks like a wiper or indicator switch). It clips on under your wiper switch and you plug it into a connector lower down on the steering column.

  10. Petrol BMW e34 cruise control retrofit on a 1993 e34 BMW 525iX

    * Diesel e34 are a different kettle of fish - fly by wire throttle etc * The cruise actuator works on the same principle for all petrol cars but the bowden cables are different. The M50 one has a right angled end to it - see pictures. I had a kit from an earlier car (that was sold to TomGC for his M30 535) and that one had a straight cable.

  11. Cruise control with manual swap

Any advise from anyone that has working cruise with a manual swapped e34 would be greatly appreciated. You can easily check the clutch switch by just removing the plug and shorting the ends. Check this post for a complete wiring diagram of the cruise control system for a 95.

  12. [E28] How to fix your cruise control & OBC speed/mileage functions

Both the OBC and cruise control module get their speed input from a small blue connector that attaches to the circuit board of the speedometer through a hole in the back of the cluster housing. The connector. Can barely see the contacts in there. Pop a terminal out paying attention that they are held in with small clips.

  17. E34 Cruise Control Problem

My cruise control (530iA) stopped working the other day. Any ideas of what to check? The Bently manual really doesn't go into any troubleshoot detail that I could find -- sort of disappointing. I checked the two fuses (1 and 17) and they look fine, not to mention other things would be failing left and right if that were the case. So I can only assume one of the control modules or switch is ...

This is because the actuator has no "feedback/tension" on startup self test.
