British & Irish Lions could play in Las Vegas in 2029 - source
Take a look back at England prop Joe Marler's career in numbers. (0:53)
The British & Irish Lions are weighing up playing a match in the United States as part of their 2029 tour of New Zealand, a source has confirmed to ESPN.
The Lions could play in Las Vegas, while Chicago and Los Angeles are also under consideration. The tourists would not face the All Blacks but could play the United States men's national team or the Maori All Blacks as a warm-up match before arriving in New Zealand.
The plans are in the early stages, but a source has told ESPN there is eagerness from all parties to make this a reality with the U.S. staging the 2031 men's Rugby World Cup.
The All Blacks have played in the U.S. before, with New Zealand's men's team playing Fiji in San Diego in July. The matches provide a welcome boost to commercial revenue. But for the Lions, it would be the first time the famous touring side would make a trip to the U.S.
The tourists do favour a warm-up match enroute to wherever they're touring. In 2013, they faced the Barbarians in Hong Kong. In 2005, they played Argentina in Cardiff, and ahead of the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa, they played Japan at Murrayfield. Ahead of next year's tour of Australia, they start off by facing Argentina in Dublin.
Las Vegas hasn't hosted a large-scale rugby union match before, but the city has hosted rugby league. In March this year, the NRL took two matches to Vegas and the Allegiant Stadium. The NRL will return to Las Vegas again next year, while a Super League match between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves will also take place there.

British & Irish Lions in ‘conversation’ with New Zealand Rugby over US-based match in 2029 – report
British & Irish Lions v All Blacks in 2017.
New Zealand Rugby and the British & Irish Lions are in conversation about the possibility of hosting one of their 2029 tour matches in the United States.
While hosting games in countries other than the touring destination is not uncommon for the side from the north, they have not played in the US. Las Vegas is one of the destinations, alongside Los Angeles and Chicago, being discussed for what will be a famous clash.
Aligns with Lions
The report from the Telegraph suggests that the fixture would align with the Lions’ requirements and makes sense in building excitement around the game ahead of the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the US.
“It would meet the Lions’ requirements from a performance point of view,” a source said. “There have been conversations around Vegas, Chicago and LA.
“We have talked about one game potentially outside of New Zealand . The tour will be different, but we’re not sure how much yet. We think there’s an opportunity to do something in another market on the way down to New Zealand. But it is five years away.”
David Campese’s Autumn Nations Series Team of the Week: All Blacks dominate as ‘deadly’ rookie stars, Marcus Smith misses out and Maro Itoje ‘back to his very best’
Rotation to stay
The same report suggests that there are no plans to remove the full tours to the three big southern nations: Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Some fans have called for Argentina to be added to the cycle, but current head coach Felipe Contepomi admits it is far away from happening. However, the Lions do face Los Pumas in Dublin before departing on their tour of Australia next year.
It is a fascinating tour in prospect with Andy Farrell in charge of the famous touring side. At the same time, the Wallabies are making small improvements under Joe Schmidt, who is still picking up the pieces from a short but chaotic Eddie Jones stint.
This weekend will offer a gauge of where the Wallabies are at as they face England at Twickenham.

Lions may roll the dice on a Las Vegas fixture

The British & Irish Lions are exploring the possibility of playing a money-spinning fixture in Las Vegas as part of their 2029 tour of New Zealand. Matches in Los Angeles or Japan are also among the options but rolling the dice and taking the Lions to Vegas is the most eye-catching proposal up for discussion.
In 2018 the Guardian reported that the Lions were keen on a fixture across the Atlantic and with the US awarded the 2031 World Cup, momentum is building to make it happen. The All Blacks have a growing profile in the US and want to continue developing commercial opportunities there. It is understood preliminary discussions between the Lions and the New Zealand union have taken place.
Before next year’s tour of Australia, beginning on 28 June, the Lions will play a warm-up fixture against Argentina in Dublin while the touring side hosted Japan at Murrayfield before the 2021 tour of South Africa. Following an agreement between the Lions and Premiership Rugby, warm-up matches have become easier to organise because players based in England are now available earlier in the summer.
In 2013 the Lions met a Barbarians side in Hong Kong and there is appetite for another stop-off fixture on the way to New Zealand, possibly against the Māori All Blacks. Vegas would add appeal for a fixture against a New Zealand side, with a large Polynesian population in nearby Utah. On the west coast of the US, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego have all been shortlisted as host cities for the 2031 World Cup. Japan is another possibility given their strategic partnership with New Zealand.
The All Blacks played Fiji in San Diego in July, having also locked horns with the US outside Washington DC in 2021. In 2016, the All Blacks were beaten by Ireland for the first time in their history at Soldier Field in Chicago – a fixture that is set to be repeated at the same venue next year as part of a grand slam tour for New Zealand, who will also visit Twickenham again.
The inaugural finals of the Nations Cup are set to be held in London in 2026 before heading to the Middle East two years later and in 2030 they are expected to be staged in the US. Premiership Rugby is also exploring taking another match Stateside. No Premiership fixture has been played in the US since 2017 when just 6,000 people turned up to watch Saracens against Newcastle in Philadelphia but there are plans to return in the next three to five years and host a match in Chicago, where the league’s title sponsor Gallagher is headquartered. Gallagher celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2027 and a match could be staged to coincide with that landmark.
