MEXICO TOURIST VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

Mexico Tourist Visa Application Form

Check if you need a Mexico tourist visa from the “Visa Requirements” section above. Alternatively, you can check if a visa is REQUIRED or EXEMPT on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico website.

Validity of Mexico tourist visa

Mexico tourist visas are valid for 6 months from the date of visa issue. Visas are usually multiple-entry.

Example: If your Mexico visa was issued on December 05, 2020, the visa will be valid until June 05, 2021.

When to apply for Mexico visa

You can apply for a Mexico visa up to 3 months in advance.

Example: If you plan to visit Mexico on April 15, you can apply for your Mexico visa on or after January 16.

How long can you stay in Mexico

The Mexico tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in Mexico.

In most cases, immigration officers give 180-day entry. But there may be occasions where you will be given fewer days. Check your FMM form for the number of days you’re allowed to stay.

Example: If you entered Mexico on July 01, you will be allowed to stay till December 27.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When asked at the port of entry, I usually say that I’m in Mexico for 1 month. But if necessary I continue staying longer. In one instance, I stayed close to 180 days and it wasn’t a problem leaving or re-entering Mexico.

Application procedure

Mexico tourist visa application is a 5 step process.

  • Prepare documents required
  • Schedule visa appointment
  • Pay visa fee
  • Attend visa appointment
  • Pick up Passport

1. Prepare documents required

The following documents are required for Mexico tourist visa.

  • Completed Mexico visa application form
  • One passport-size photograph
  • Original passport
  • Copy of the first and last page of your passport
  • Original employment letter (must have been working for at least 1 year in the current company)
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months
  • Payslips for the last 3 months
  • Copy of the visa/residence permit if applying in a third country (Example: if you hold an Indian passport and applying in the US, you have to provide a copy of your US visa)

1.2. Photo requirements

The photo must be 4.5cm x 3.5 cm with a white background, no glasses and the face covering 80% of the photo.

2. Schedule visa appointment

You must schedule your visa appointment at your nearest Mexican embassy or consulate using the MEXITEL visa appointment website. You cannot appear at the consulate without a prior scheduled appointment.

First, you will have to create an account in MEXITEL. You will need the following details to create your account.

  • Surname/Family Name
  • Mother’s Last Name
  • Primary Phone
  • Phone Number

After creating your account, you will have to select the country and the consulate. You will then see the calendar with available dates. You can select the date and time that works for you and schedule the appointment.

After you finish scheduling your appointment, you will receive a confirmation letter in your email. You must print this confirmation letter and carry it with you on the day of your appointment.

The Mexican embassy in India made a nice step-by-step guide on how to schedule visa appointments using the MEXITEL website.

NOTE Use Chrome browser if you can to schedule your appointment. MEXITEL website is not compatible with certain web browsers.

3. Pay visa fee

The Mexico tourist visa fee is $44 USD payable in local currency. You may end up paying a bit more or less due to the exchange rate. Keep in mind that the visa fee is non-refundable.

The payment method for the visa fee depends on the country and consulate. Some Mexican consulates accept cash payments within the consulate. Some require you to pay the fee at a designated bank in person or online prior to attending your appointment at the consulate. Check on your nearest consulate website for the exact procedure and fee.

4. Attend visa appointment

On the day of your visa appointment, you must appear at the Mexican consulate. If the consulate requires the visa payment to be made at the consulate, you will be instructed to pay the visa fee at the cashier.

You will then meet the consular officer. You must present your passport, documents and visa fee receipt.

The consulate office will review your documents and capture your biometrics such as photos and fingerprints. They will ask you a few questions to assess your background and purpose of travel.

If you are not eligible for the visa or do not meet the requirements, you will be told so. Your documents and passport will be returned back. This is not a rejection, so it will not hurt your future visa attempts for Mexico or any other country.

4.1. Visa processing time

Mexico tourist visa processing takes 2 working days. If there are too many applicants, the processing can take up to 10 working days. You will be told at the visa interview when to come back to pick up your passport.

05. Pick up passport

You have to go back to the Mexican consulate again in person to pick up your passport.

Keep in mind that passports cannot be mailed back to you. You also cannot send anyone else to pick up your passport. You must go back in person to pick up your own passport.

After you pick up your passport, verify the name and dates on your Mexico visa to make sure everything is correct.

ENTERING AND LEAVING MEXICO BY AIR

Mexico Immigration Form FMM

Entering Mexico by air

A Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) is a Mexican immigration form similar to an arrival/departure card, also called a Mexico Tourist Card. Normally, an FMM card will be given to you on your inbound flight. You must fill this FMM card before you enter the immigration and customs at the first port of entry in Mexico.

At your first port of entry in Mexico, you have to go through passport control. You will be asked about your purpose of travel, whether it’s your first time in Mexico, etc. Your passport will be stamped.

Mexico Immigration Form FMM 180 days

The number of days you will be allowed to stay will be marked on the FMM card. Usually, it’s 180 days but it can be less also. Verify the card right away to make sure you were given enough days for your trip.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I have entered Mexico by air at Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancun airports. I was always asked how long I plan to stay in Mexico. I was never asked to show proof of my return ticket or hotel bookings.

IMPORTANT You must retain the FMM card while you are in Mexico. If you lose, you have to pay a penalty on your exit.

As always, carry a copy of your return ticket and hotel booking just in case. If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, don’t forget to get proof of onward ticket .

Get a proof of onward ticket for your trip from OnwardTicket

Leaving Mexico by air

You have to return the FMM card to the airline staff on your exit. If you lose your FMM card, you must pay a penalty. To avoid any penalties and delays on your exit, make sure to keep the FMM card safe while you are in the country.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I left Mexico by air at Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancun airports. There was no exit passport control. The airline staff verified my FMM card at check-in and took it away at the gate before boarding.

ENTERING AND LEAVING MEXICO BY LAND

Mexico Tourism Tax Receipt

Entering Mexico by land

Grab and fill an FMM card at the immigration office. Present your passport, FMM card and cash for tourism tax.

You will be asked about your purpose of travel, whether it’s your first time in Mexico, etc. Your passport will be stamped. The number of days you will be allowed to stay will be marked on the FMM card. Usually, it’s 180 days but it can be less in some instances. Check the FMM card right away to make sure you were given enough days for your trip.

TOURISM TAX All tourists entering Mexico must pay a tourism tax. If you are flying into Mexico, your airline fare will include tourism tax. But if you are entering by land, you must pay tourism tax at the immigration office. The tourism tax is $594 MXN. It must be paid in cash in Mexican pesos only, but at some borders accept USD.

Leaving Mexico by land

You must present your original passport, FMM card and proof of tourism tax paid to the immigration officer.

Mexico tourist tax charged by the airline

If you have entered Mexico by air, check your airline booking for itemized price details. You should see a line such as “Tourism Tax”. You can print your booking and show this as proof of the tourism tax paid when leaving Mexico by land. If you do not see tourism tax in your booking, you can email the airline requesting an itemized invoice. If the airline can’t provide you with one, you MUST pay tourism tax when leaving Mexico by land.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I left Mexico by land at Ciudad Cuauhtemoc near the Mexico/Guatemala border. I had a receipt of my tourist tax, so I presented my tourist tax receipt, FMM card and passport. The immigration officer took away the tourist tax receipt, and FMM card and stamped my passport with an exit stamp. It took about 5 minutes at the immigration office.

ENTERING AND LEAVING MEXICO BY SEA

Chetumal International Port

Entering Mexico by sea

TOURISM TAX All tourists entering Mexico must pay a tourism tax. If you are flying into Mexico, your airline fare will include tourism tax. But if you are entering by sea, you must pay tourism tax at the immigration office. The tourism tax is $594 MXN. It must be paid in cash in Mexican pesos only, but some maritime ports accept USD.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I entered Mexico by sea at Chetumal near the Mexico/Belize border. I grabbed an FMM card, quickly filled and lined up at the immigration counter. It took a while to get through the immigration as there were many on the boat and there was only one immigration officer. I paid $533 MXN for tourism tax and received a receipt of payment.

Leaving Mexico by sea

If you do not have a tourism tax receipt or your airline booking doesn’t indicate it clearly, you will have to pay tourism tax when leaving Mexico by sea.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I left Mexico by sea at Chetumal near the Mexico/Belize border. I did not have a receipt for my tourism tax paid, so I had to pay the tourism tax at the port. I did not receive a receipt for tourism tax paid since I’m exiting and the receipt will not be useful anyway. The immigration procedure took about 10 minutes.

Almost all travelers require a visa to enter Egypt, but fortunately, the process is pretty simple, and a little advance planning goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the entry requirements for visiting the land of pyramids on a tourist visa.

Who needs a visa to visit Egypt?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Egypt, but citizens of many countries can apply for an e-Visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at Egypt’s international airports. Both cost US$25.

Getting an e-Visa is generally a smoother process than getting a visa at the airport. Apply for a tourist visa online in advance on  the Egyptian Government's official e-Visa website . All you have to do is fill out the online application form and pay.

If you decide to get a visa at the airport when you land in Egypt, be prepared to wait in line – bring your own pen to fill out the paperwork in line or on the plane – and pay in cash (US dollars, euros or British pounds only, not Egyptian pounds).

Citizens of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can enter Egypt visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Malaysia can enter for up to 14 days.

If you're not eligible to get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa, head to the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country and apply in person. The visa process can take several weeks.

How to get an e-Visa for Egypt

To save time, apply for an e-Visa before your trip to Egypt. Citizens of these countries are eligible for Egypt’s e-Visa and can apply on the Egyptian government's official website . Your passport must be valid for at least six months before the date you intend to arrive.

The process is simple: sign up for an account, fill the form and pay the US$25 using a credit or debit card. You’ll receive email notifications as the application is processed.

If you’re issued a visa, you’ll be emailed a link to your e-Visa to download and print the document. When you land in Egypt, present the e-Visa to the Egyptian border patrol with your passport. Have a copy of your accommodation details or tour booking in case you’re asked to show them at the airport.

Egypt’s e-Visa can be single or multiple entry. The single-entry visa allows visitors one entry into the country for stays of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa allows travelers to come into  Egypt an unlimited number of times over a period of 180 days and for up to 30 days at a time. Apply for a multi-entry visa at least seven days before your trip.

Visa on arrival in Egypt

If you don’t have time to apply for an e-Visa, you can still get a visa on arrival at the airport if you’re eligible. Visas are available for purchase (US$25) at a kiosk in the arrivals hall before the immigration counters.

Have the correct amount in cash in a major foreign currency (US dollars, euros or British pounds) to avoid delays.

The visa comes in the form of a stamp that you’ll need to put into your passport to present at the immigration counters and passport control.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, you’ll need a passport that’s valid for at least six months from your arrival date, a travel itinerary and documentation to show you've booked accommodations or tours.

Visa on arrival is available at all of Egypt’s international airports. The downsides are that you can be issued a single entry visa only, and the lines at the airport can be long.

You don't need a visa to stay in Sinai on short trips

If you are visiting the resort towns on the Gulf of Aqaba coast and won’t be going to mainland Egypt, you can stay in Sinai for 14 days without buying an Egyptian visa. The Sinai-only visa allows travellers to visit Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab , Nuweiba , Taba and St Catherine, but you cannot go to Ras Muhammad National Park.

The Sinai-only visa is available at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh and the Egypt–Israel border crossing at Taba. If you arrive at Taba and plan to visit mainland Egypt, you must purchase a visa online in advance or at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

Entry to Egypt: How to Get an Egyptian Visa

Egyptian flag and visa application with passport

Egypt is one of the most epic countries we have ever visited. From the ancient pyramids to the glistening Red Sea, there are thousands of reasons to visit Egypt. The problem for many travelers is that they aren’t sure how to get an Egyptian tourist visa.

While many countries allow visa-free travel for most nationalities, Egypt is one that requires just about every traveler to attain a visa. Without a valid visa, entry into Egypt is impossible for most nationalities, including travelers from the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, most of Europe, and Australia.

This post will lay out everything you need to know about getting an Egyptian tourist visa.

What Is a Visa?

A travel visa is essentially a document permitting you entry into a country. Many countries allow visa-free travel, which enables your valid passport to act as your visa. However, in many cases, you need to take extra steps to secure a visa before you can pass through a country’s immigration enforcement.

Visas come in different forms , and it is important to decide what type of visa you need before you depart on your trip. Visas can be issued for tourism, study, business, and other reasons, and it’s crucial that you get the right type of visa to avoid breaking any immigration laws. If you want to make money while in the country, for example, most countries require you to apply for a business visa instead of a tourist visa.

Ways to Get an Egyptian Tourist Visa

In reality, most travelers to Egypt are tourists. The vast majority of people entering Egypt do so with an Egypt tourist visa. The government of Egypt allows travelers to get a tourist visa in several different ways, depending on their nationality.

The three most common ways to get an Egyptian tourist visa as an American are through your local Egyptian Consulate, upon arrival in Egypt, and online in advance of your trip. There are special rules regarding each one, as well as advantages and drawbacks that may lead you to choose one over another.

Visa on Arrival in Egypt

The first (and best, in my opinion) way to get an Egyptian visa is by completing the Visa on Arrival process. This is exactly what it sounds like; you land in Egypt and follow a few steps to get your visa before passing through the immigration counters.

Visa on Arrival is not available to all nationalities, but it is available to many. Specifically, travelers with passports from the EU, United States, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom are eligible, as well as some other nationalities as long as they have a valid visa to one of those countries.

The Visa on Arrival is only available in major international airports, including Cairo, Sharm el Sheikh, and Hurghada.

If you are entering via a land border or by sea, you should opt for one of the other tourist visa application methods.

There are requirements for the Egyptian Visa on Arrival. In addition to being citizens of eligible countries, foreign nationals must have at least two blank pages left in their passport, have at least 6 months of validity left until it expires, and they might have to prove that they purchased a flight home from Egypt. The Egyptian Visa on Arrival is only a single entry visa, meaning that once you leave Egypt, your visa is no longer valid.

Visa on Arrival at Cairo International Airport

The most common place to get an Egyptian Visa on Arrival is at Cairo International Airport. This is the biggest airport in Egypt, and it is the most common arrival point for U.S. citizens and other travelers from outside of the Middle East. Getting a Visa on Arrival in Cairo can be a bit confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing.

When you land in Cairo, you will follow the signs to the immigration area. Right before the immigration counters, there will be several signs pointing you in the direction of banks. You will need to proceed to any of these bank counters in order to purchase your visa on arrival.

man holding an Egyptian visa in cairo airport

The visa costs $25 US dollars and must be purchased in cash. They might have change for you, but I recommend bringing the exact amount you will need. The attendant will ask to see your passport to check its validity, and if all looks good, he or she will hand you a small visa sticker.

Do not stick this in your passport.

Instead, proceed to the immigration line with your stickers, passports, and the rest of your belongings. The immigration agent will stick the visa in your passport, ensure that you meet the Egypt visa requirements, give a stamp of approval, and send you on your way.

It’s very common for this process to take a little while, as the lines at the banks and the lines for immigration can both get long. It took us about an hour to get from the plane to the baggage claim, and our bags arrived shortly after we got through immigration.

Egyptian E-Visa

The second most common way to get an Egyptian visa is by applying online for the Egypt E-Visa. The Egypt EVisa, or electronic visa , is an online visa that can be purchased from the comfort of your home.

There is only one official place to get the Egyptian E-Visa, and that is from  visa2egypt.gov.eg . This is the official government website that is in charge of managing the online application form and electronic visa service. There are many other agencies that appear to be the official place to apply online, but only this website can be fully trusted.

This is the only website that can be trusted to apply for your online visa. visa2egypt.gov.eg

The application process is very straightforward and clearly laid out on the government website. You need to make an account with your email address, fill out the online application form, select your visa type, submit your payment, and wait for your approval email. It is as simple as that!

The Egyptian E-Visa can be purchased as either a single-entry visa or a multiple-entry visa. Naturally, the cost of the multiple-entry e-visa is higher than the single-entry, with current prices being $60 and $25 respectively. The processing time is usually within 5 business days, and you then have to enter Egypt within 30 days of the visa being issued.

The Egyptian E-Visa is available to travelers from about 80 countries, including Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, most of Latin America, and most of Asia. One notable country that is ineligible for the Egyptian E-visa is Israel. Israeli nationals must obtain a visa from the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Visa Granted Through an Egyptian Embassy or Consulate

The least common way to get an Egyptian tourist visa is through your local Egyptian consulate or embassy. These places are the international offices of the Egyptian government, and they have the power to grant all types of visas to travelers. Historically, the only way to get a visa was by visiting an embassy or consulate, but that has changed with modern technology.

There are 5 locations in the U.S. where you can apply for an Egyptian tourist visa. The Egyptian Embassy is in Washington D.C., and there are consulates in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston.

Disadvantages of Applying for an Egyptian Visa at the Consulate

There are some major advantages to applying for a visa through a consulate or embassy, but there are just as many drawbacks. First and foremost, it is tedious and time-consuming. The embassy visa process requires many more documents, much more correspondence, longer waiting periods, a higher service fee, and potentially even mailing important documents around.

Beyond that, many people don’t live within a short drive of a consulate, which means applying can be a real task. Since applicants may have to appear at the consulate in person depending on the country, an added challenge is gathering up all the family members for a trip to whatever city houses the consulate. Put briefly, it’s a major hassle.

Reasons to Apply for an Egyptian Visa at the Consulate

With that being said, sometimes it is the best or only option. Citizens of certain countries, like Israel, can only obtain an Egyptian tourist visa from the embassy or consulate. Additionally, any type of visa other than a tourist visa must be issued by a consulate or embassy, which makes the e-visa and visa on arrival impossible for educational or business activities.

Another major benefit of applying for a visa at the embassy or consulate is that you can apply for a visa of longer than 30 days. The E-Visa and Visa on Arrival are only valid for 30 days from entry. If you want to visit Egypt for tourism purposes for longer than a month, you can apply for a visa at the embassy for a longer period of time.

In addition to that, you can apply at the consulate much earlier than you can apply online. As soon as your travel information is booked, you can apply locally for your Egyptian tourist visa and avoid a hassle right before your trip. The visa is valid at any port of entry, too, meaning you can drive, sail, or fly into any part of Egypt without any issues.

What Is the Best Way to Get an Egyptian Visa?

The best option is visa on arrival.

Of all the different types of visas you can get to go to Egypt, I think there is a clear best option. As long as you qualify and your travel plans are less than 30 days in total, the Visa on Arrival is the clear best choice. It requires no work before your trip, no additional required documents, and no hidden fees.

As long as your passport meets the entry requirements and you bring cash for the visa, there is very little room for the process to go wrong. The Egyptian authorities were very friendly in helping us figure out how to buy our visa on arrival, and the immigration officers never even asked to see our travel itinerary.

E-Visas Are a Good Choice Too

If you don’t trust the visa on arrival process, or if you will need multiple entries into Egypt during your trip, the Egyptian E-Visa is the best bet. It is very straightforward and costs the same as the visa on arrival. The only drawback is that you need to spend some time filling out the online form before you travel, and you need to keep track of a printed copy of the e-visa while you travel to Egypt.

Personally, I think it is already enough of a task keeping track of my family members’ travel documents, and I’d much rather just handle it upon arrival at the Egyptian border in the airport. If you do decide to get an online e-visa to Egypt, make sure to use the  official government website  instead of an agency. The process is easy to do on your own, and agencies add fees that you simply shouldn’t have to pay.

Avoid the Embassy Route Unless It’s Your Only Choice

The least preferable way to get your visa is at a consulate or embassy in advance. If you need Egyptian travel visas for tourism of longer than 30 days, business, or something else, this is your only option. If all you need is a tourist visa for less than 30 days, and you’re eligible for one of the other two methods, definitely stick to those.

Egypt tourist visa application process

The application process for an Egypt tourist visa is as follows:

Are you eligible for Egypt eVisa?

Before you begin applying for an Egypt tourist visa, determine if you are eligible for Egypt eVisa. The above section explained what countries are eligible for the eVisa. If yes, go through the process as it’s easy and short. If not, continue the process as explained in the below section.

Completing the application form

The first stage is to complete the application form. You can receive it from the Egyptian embassy or consulate website in your home country. Remember that you need to find their website and know the requirements.

Complete the firm with the exact information from your documents. Your name must be as written on your passport. So it is with the other documents. When you complete the form, print, date, and sign it. Ask the embassy whether you should date the form or not.

Gathering the requirements

The Egyptian embassy requires you to submit some supporting documents to prove you are eligible to visit the country. You can see the list of them in the above section, but the embassy or consulate in your home country could require further documents. It’s up to their decision and your case.

Remember that you can start collecting requirements earlier than the date you want to apply for the visa. It could take a bit longer for you to collect everything, so consider some delays.

Schedule a visa interview with the embassy

When you have collected all or part of the requirements, contact the embassy and schedule a visa appointment with them. If you have not gathered part of the supporting documents, see if you can collect all the requirements by the date of the interview.

Determine if the embassy provides a recipe for the scheduled meeting or not. If yes, keep the receipt and provide it for the interview. You need to remember the exact date and time of the interview as you should not be late.

Attend the visa meeting

Go to the visa meeting on the exact date you reserved it. You should not be late and, in fact, a bit early. It could take time to go through the security check and prove your identity. You need to carry all the supporting documents to the meeting. As there is a fee with the visa processing, bring enough money to pay it. Ask the embassy what form they receive the payment; cash or credit card.

When you meet the visa officer, submit the requirements, pay the fee and keep the receipt. They will also ask you questions about the purpose of your visit to the country. Be honest and give true answers regarding your visit.

When everything is completed, you can ask about the processing time and the way to receive your visa.

Wait for visa processing

It takes time, so the embassy works on your visa and decides whether to issue it or not. The processing time is up to a few factors;

  • The embassy workload
  • Your documents are complete or not
  • The time of the year you have applied.

When your visa is ready, the officials inform you to pick it up or send it to your address. If it’s refused, they will inform you of the reason.

Egypt tourist visa fees or costs

The fee of the cost of the Egypt tourist visa is up to the country you apply from. The type of visa is also another factor. For instance, US citizens have to pay $29 for a single tourist visa while a multiple tourist visa is $63. A single entry visa costs $13, and multiple entries cost $89. Some countries might also be free of fees for some types such as:

  • Diplomatic passport holders
  • UN Liaises passers

You would better ask the embassy about the fee and be prepared to pay it.

Egypt tourist visa processing time

The processing time for the Egyptian tourist visa is up to different factors. The time of the year you apply influences it if you apply during the peak tourist season, the processing will become longer. Also, if your documents are not complete and the embassy asks for more, the timing will become longer. However, the embassy will process everything fast and inform you of the decision as soon as possible.

Egypt tourist visa for US citizens

The US citizens do not need to apply for an Egypt tourist visa as they can apply for an Egypt eVisa. The processing application for eVisa is completely online, and the US nationals will receive the visa through your mail. You print the visa and provide it to the Border officials at the port of entry. The one point to remember is that US citizens need to apply for the eVisa at least 7 days before the date they want to enter the country.

The US citizens are allowed to stay in Egypt for 30 days. If you receive a multiple-entry visa, there won’t be a limit on the times to enter the country, but you can not stay for over 30 days on each visit.

Egypt tourist visa COVID-19 regulations

Tourists can enter Egypt for tourism, and the officials are issuing visas. However, the COVID-19 requirements are still in place.

You need to provide a negative PCR test when you arrive in the country. The result of the test is accepted in English or Arabic. The test can not be older than 72 hours before the arrival date in Egypt. The test you take must be based on a nasal or oral swab, and the certificate you provide to officials must be issued by an approved laboratory.

If you come from one of the following countries or have taken a PCR test in one of them, the validity of the test is 96 hours:

When you arrive at one of the Egyptian airports, you need to provide:

  • The medical certificate
  • Public health card

COVID-19 restrictions for Egypt tourist visa

The foreign visitors entering the country need to respect the law and regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The evening curfews have been lifted in Egypt. However, the restaurants and cafes must close by 10.00 pm. The shops also need to close by 9.00 pm.

You need to wear a facial mask everywhere you go and the ones who do not have access to Egyptian public transportation.

Public places are active at 50% of capacity with safety hygiene standards:

  • Restaurants
  • Movie theatres
  • Sports clubs

Places of worship, mosques, and churches, are active but with limitations, and the number of people visiting is reduced.

You would better follow the following instructions for COVID-19 safety procedures:

  • Keep away from large gatherings of people
  • Wash your hands regularly, particularly after touching surfaces
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing with tissue or elbow pit
  • Keep a social distance of at least one meter in public places

COVID-19 testing in coastal governorates

The Egyptian government has advised foreign visitors to take a PCR test when arriving in the governorates of:

  • Red Sea (Hurghada and Marsa Alam)
  • South Sinai (Sharm El Sheikh)
  • Marsa Matrouh

The cost of the PCR test is USD30 but if you have a vaccination certificate of the approved vaccines, you don’t have to pass the PCR test.

After taking the test, you need to isolate yourself until you receive the result of the test. The officials will inform you whether the test is positive and you must continue your isolation for 14 days or if it’s negative and you can leave the hotel. The result of the test will become available in 12-24 hours.

If your symptoms get worse, you must visit a hospital, so it is essential to buy health insurance for your visit to the country.

Impact of the previous visit to Israel on Egypt tourist visa

People ask that if I have visited Israel, will I be banned from entering Egypt? The answer is NO. The Israel entry or exit stamp on your passport does not disqualify you from entering Egypt. However, you might have to get the right of entry into the country and explain the purpose of your visit to Israel. Also, you would better ask the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country whether you will have any difficulty visiting the country or not.

What are the customs regulations for an Egypt tourist visa?

The tourists are allowed to bring only up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds to the country. There is no limit to hard currency but the amount over USD 10,000 must be declared on arrival to the officials. If you carry electrical equipment and video cameras, you must declare it to the officials. You need to inform the Ministry of Telecommunications to bring satellite phones and radio communications equipment to the country and if you don’t notify them, the equipment will be confiscated. When you carry electrical equipment that is mentioned on your passport, you must take them out of the country and if not, you have to pay high rates of customs duty.

If you need to carry certain objects with you to Egypt, contact the embassy and ask what the exact rules are.

Is it legal to bring medication under an Egyptian tourist visa?

Some of the common medications that you take and are considered in the EU or the US might be considered illegal by Egyptian authorities without prior permission. You need the approval of  Egypt’s Ministry of Health to bring your medicine to the country.

In case you enter the country and don’t have permission and the supporting documents for the medication you carry, you may be prosecuted.

You must carry a medical certificate approving the prescription for the medication you take. The medicine must be for a medical condition you suffer from. The certificate must be through a letter from your GP. The GP or health expert must indicate that the medicine:

  • Is for this particular health condition
  • The quantity of medication you take,
  • It’s for your personal usage only.

Introduction

Planning a trip to Egypt? One of the first things you’ll need to do is obtain a tourist visa. Whether you’re visiting the majestic Pyramids of Giza, cruising along the Nile River, or exploring the vibrant streets of Cairo, having the proper documentation is essential to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Obtaining a tourist visa for Egypt is a relatively straightforward process. With the right information and proper documentation, you can easily navigate through the application process and be on your way to exploring this fascinating country.

In this article, we will guide you through the steps involved in getting a tourist visa for Egypt. From determining the type of visa you require to submitting your application, we’ll provide you with all the necessary details and tips to make the process as seamless as possible.

So, if you’re ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure in Egypt, let’s dive into the process of obtaining a tourist visa.

Step 1: Determine the type of tourist visa you require

Before applying for a tourist visa for Egypt, it’s important to determine the specific type of visa that suits your travel plans. Egypt offers different types of tourist visas based on the duration of your stay and the purpose of your visit.

Here are the common types of tourist visas available:

  • Single Entry Visa: This visa allows you to enter Egypt once and stay for a specific period, usually up to 30 days. If you plan on visiting Egypt for a short vacation or a single trip, a single entry visa is most suitable.
  • Multiple Entry Visa: If you’re planning to enter Egypt multiple times within a certain period, a multiple entry visa is required. This visa allows you to enter and exit the country multiple times during a specific timeframe, typically up to 90 days.
  • Transit Visa: If you have a layover in Egypt and wish to leave the airport to explore the city for a short period, you can apply for a transit visa. This visa is valid for 48 hours.

Once you have decided which type of visa you need, it’s time to move on to the next step, which is gathering the necessary documents.

It’s important to note that visa requirements and regulations can change, so it’s advisable to check the official website of the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date information about the specific visa type you require.

Step 2: Gather the necessary documents

Once you have determined the type of tourist visa you require for your trip to Egypt, the next step is to gather all the necessary documents. Having all the required paperwork ready will ensure a smooth and efficient application process.

Here is a list of documents you will typically need to include with your visa application:

  • Passport: Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Egypt. It should also have a minimum of two blank pages for visa stamps.
  • Visa application form: Download and fill out the official visa application form. Ensure that all the information is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Passport-sized photographs: Attach two recent passport-sized photographs that meet the specifications mentioned in the application guidelines. The photos should be clear with a white background.
  • Proof of accommodation: Provide proof of your accommodation arrangements in Egypt, such as hotel reservations or a letter of invitation if staying with friends or family.
  • Flight itinerary: Include a copy of your round-trip airline ticket or a confirmed flight reservation showing your arrival and departure dates.
  • Bank statement: Provide a recent bank statement or evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Egypt.
  • Travel insurance: It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses and emergencies during your trip to Egypt. Include a copy of your insurance policy.

Depending on the specific requirements of your visa type, you may need to provide additional documents such as a letter of employment, a travel itinerary, or proof of vaccination depending on the current regulations.

It’s essential to double-check the visa application guidelines provided by the Egyptian embassy or consulate to ensure you have all the necessary documents before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Fill out the visa application form

Now that you have gathered all the necessary documents, it’s time to fill out the visa application form for your tourist visa to Egypt. The visa application form collects important information about your travel plans and personal details, so it’s essential to complete it accurately and thoroughly.

Follow these steps to fill out the visa application form:

  • Download the official visa application form from the website of the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your country.
  • Read the instructions carefully and gather all the information needed, including your personal details, passport information, and travel itinerary.
  • Fill out the form electronically or using legible handwriting, ensuring that all the information is accurate and matches the details on your passport.
  • Answer all the questions honestly and provide a clear and concise explanation when necessary.
  • Attach the required photographs to the designated section of the form.
  • Review the completed form to ensure that all the information is correct and that there are no missing or incomplete fields.
  • Sign and date the form as required.

Remember to check for any specific requirements mentioned in the application guidelines, such as additional forms or supporting documents for certain visa types.

Keep in mind that it’s essential to provide accurate and truthful information on your visa application form. Any false or misleading information could lead to the rejection of your application. If you have any doubts or questions while filling out the form, contact the embassy or consulate for clarification.

With the completed visa application form in hand, you’re ready to move on to the next step, which involves paying the visa application fee.

Step 4: Pay the visa application fee

After filling out the visa application form, the next step in obtaining a tourist visa for Egypt is to pay the visa application fee. The fee amount may vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for.

Here’s how you can pay the visa application fee:

  • Contact the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your country to find out the accepted methods of payment. In some cases, you may need to pay the fee in person at the embassy or consulate, while in other cases, online payment options may be available.
  • Ensure that you have the required payment method available, such as cash, credit card, or a bank transfer. If paying in person, visit the embassy or consulate during their business hours to make the payment.
  • Obtain a receipt or proof of payment, as you may need to provide it along with your visa application.
  • Double-check the visa application guidelines to ensure that you have paid the correct fee amount for your specific visa type.

It’s important to note that the visa application fee is non-refundable, even if your application is rejected. Therefore, ensure that you understand the visa requirements and have all the necessary documents before paying the fee to avoid any inconvenience or unnecessary expenses.

Once the visa application fee has been paid, you’re ready to proceed to the next step, which involves submitting your application and supporting documents.

Step 5: Submit your application and documents

With your visa application form filled out and the application fee paid, it’s time to submit your application and supporting documents to the appropriate authorities. The submission process may vary depending on the embassy or consulate and the specific visa application procedure. Here are the general steps to help you navigate this process:

  • Gather all the required documents and make sure they are complete and in order.
  • Make copies of all the documents for your own records and to have as a reference during the application process.
  • Place your original documents and copies in an organized and secure manner.
  • Check the official website of the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your country for information on how to submit your application. Some embassies may require you to apply in person, while others may accept applications by mail or through an online portal.
  • If applying in person, schedule an appointment if necessary and arrive at the embassy or consulate at the designated time. Bring the original documents, copies, and any additional forms or requirements mentioned in the application guidelines.
  • If applying by mail, carefully pack your application and ensure that all the required documents are included. Follow the mailing instructions provided by the embassy or consulate and consider using a secure and trackable mailing service.
  • If applying through an online portal, upload the scanned copies of the required documents as per the specifications mentioned on the website. Follow the instructions provided on the portal for a smooth submission process.
  • Before submitting your application, carefully review all the documents to ensure that nothing is missing or incomplete.
  • Submit your application and documents as per the designated method, whether in person, by mail, or online.
  • Obtain a receipt or acknowledgment of your application submission. This will serve as proof that your application has been received and processed.

It’s important to note that the processing time for visa applications may vary, so make sure to submit your application well in advance of your planned travel dates. Additionally, keep any tracking numbers or references provided by the embassy or consulate so that you can track the status of your application if needed.

With your application submitted, it’s time to move on to the next step: waiting for the visa processing to be completed.

Step 6: Wait for visa processing

Once you have submitted your visa application and supporting documents, the next step is to patiently wait for the visa processing to be completed. The duration of the processing time may vary depending on several factors, including the embassy or consulate you applied to and the current volume of visa applications.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you wait for your visa to be processed:

  • Check the estimated processing time provided by the embassy or consulate. This information is typically available on their website or can be obtained through the receipt or acknowledgment you received upon submission.
  • Be prepared for the possibility of delays. Visa processing times can sometimes take longer than anticipated due to unforeseen circumstances or an influx of applications.
  • Avoid making any travel arrangements or commitments until you have received your visa. It’s important to have the visa in hand before booking flights or making non-refundable reservations.
  • During the waiting period, check your email regularly for any communication from the embassy or consulate. They may reach out if they require additional documents or if there are any updates regarding your application.
  • Resist the temptation to inquire about the status of your application unless the processing time specified by the embassy or consulate has been significantly exceeded. Patience is key during this stage.

Remember, the visa processing time is beyond your control, so it’s important to remain patient and allow the embassy or consulate sufficient time to process your application. Once your visa has been approved, you will move on to the final step: receiving your tourist visa.

While waiting for your visa to be processed, you can take this time to plan the rest of your trip, make arrangements for accommodations, and research the attractions and activities you would like to explore in Egypt.

Step 7: Receive your tourist visa

The final step in obtaining a tourist visa for Egypt is receiving your visa. Once the processing of your application is complete, you will be notified by the embassy or consulate about the status of your visa.

Here’s what to expect when it comes to receiving your tourist visa:

  • If your visa application is approved, you will be notified by the embassy or consulate through email, mail, or phone. They will provide instructions on how to collect your visa.
  • If you applied in person at the embassy or consulate, you may need to return to collect your visa. Prepare to bring your valid passport and any additional documentation requested by the embassy or consulate.
  • If you applied by mail or through an online portal, the embassy or consulate will typically send your passport back to you with the visa affixed inside. Make sure to provide a secure and traceable mailing address when you submit your application.
  • The visa will be a sticker or stamp placed inside your passport. Carefully inspect the visa for any errors or discrepancies in your personal information or visa validity dates. Contact the embassy or consulate immediately if you notice any issues.
  • Make copies of your visa and store them in a safe place. It’s a good idea to have digital copies as well, either on your smartphone or saved in your email or cloud storage.
  • Check the details of the visa, including the validity dates, number of entries permitted, and any other conditions or restrictions. Ensure that it aligns with your travel plans and requirements.

Once you have received your visa, you are now ready to embark on your adventure to Egypt! Make sure to have your passport with the visa ready while traveling and present it upon arrival in Egypt, as officials may ask to see it.

It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the visa conditions, such as the maximum length of stay and any other rules that apply. Violating the terms of your visa can lead to serious consequences, so it’s important to abide by the regulations.

With your tourist visa in hand, you can now look forward to immersing yourself in the rich history, mesmerizing landscapes, and vibrant culture that Egypt has to offer. Enjoy your trip!
