maritime travel dieppe

With its deep harbour protected by white cliffs, Dieppe has long been a favourite destination for cross-Channel visitors. As for daring Dieppe sailors, they explored the globe. Learn about the town’s history at Dieppe Castle, Cité de la Mer and theatre dedicated to the tragic Dieppe Raid of 1942. Head for the beach, quays and restaurants, and don’t miss the town’s famous Saturday morning market, voted ‘France’s Finest Market’ in 2020.

Steeped in maritime HISTORY

Located on the scenic Alabaster Coast , Dieppe has a long and fascinating history of seafaring, known to go back to the Vikings. The port’s name reflects the fact that it offers deep waters. Fishing was always a vital trade here, and from the 15th century, this included long-distance cod-fishing off Newfoundland – links between Dieppe and Canada down the centuries have been particularly strong. Many bold adventurers also set out from the port to explore and trade in Africa.

Plage de Dieppe

France’s first ever seaside resort

Early in the 19th century, Dieppe found a cheerful vocation as France’s first ever seaside resort . Following English fashions, Parisians took to holidaying by the sea at Dieppe, with the first purpose-built Etablissement des Bains (or sea-bathing establishment) in France set up here in 1822.

The resort became a magnet for the British too, including a bohemian artistic set who appreciated the more relaxed atmosphere this side of the Channel during the Belle Epoque. Artists from both sides of the Channel found inspiration here. Ferry links made Dieppe a much-appreciated first port of call for many British visitors.

During World War II, an Allied raid to test the strength of German defenses around Dieppe ended in tragedy. Today, along with its pebble beach , Dieppe attracts the crowds with its port, seafood restaurants and many historic and cultural attractions, the last aspects recognised in its official classification as a French Ville d’Art et d’Histoire . The ferry service from Newhaven still draws many British visitors to Dieppe.

Marché de Dieppe

A sky full of rainbow-coloured kites

Dieppe’s  famous international kite festival , which is the biggest event of its kind in the world, takes place every other year. In September, every two years, hundreds of kites big and small will fill the air, making for a magical and unforgettable family experience. Held on Europe’s largest seafront lawns, this free event brings together over 1,000 professionals from five continents and half a million visitors.

SEAFOOD FESTIVALS

Every year, visitors flock in their thousands to the Alabaster Coast, as this scenic part of Normandy is known, to sample the  hareng  (herring) and Saint-Jacques scallops, two products that the bustling port of Dieppe is famous for. Dieppe was historically a long major players in the herring trade and until the 1970’s, herring known here as the ‘king of fish’ was the driving force behind the local economy. Today these two local specialties are celebrated with the Herring and scallop festival !

Dieppe Castle : Standing atop the cliffs west of the harbour, looking down on the town, Dieppe Castle was largely built in the second half of the 15th century, after the English had been pushed out of France at the end of the Hundred Years’ War. The castle is now home to Dieppe Museum and is packed with collections recalling the great traditions of the port over the years, including trading in spices and importing ivory, the latter intricately carved by expert craftsmen in town. The importance of the port to the Impressionists and other artists is covered in a separate collection.

The beach and seafront : Dieppe has a long pebble beach stretching as far as the tall cliffs west of the harbour. Behind the beach, a broad expanse extending over a mile offers sports facilities, children’s play areas and lawns, which are Europe’s largest.

Church of Saint-Jacques : This grand medieval pilgrimage church is dedicated to St James of Compostela. It includes many magnificent Gothic features inside and out, including a fine rose window and a 130ft tower added in the 15th century.

Church of Saint-Rémy: This major church was constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, while its central spire dates from the 18th century. Inside, the fine wood panelling in the choir, the organ case and the Renaissance decoration in the treasury are all worth the visit.

Estran Cité de la Mer : This museum dedicated to the sea imparts interesting details on Dieppe’s maritime traditions, from shipbuilding to fishing. Local geology is also covered, while aquariums display fish and sea creatures from the Channel.

Dieppe market:  Recently voted France’s finest market, Dieppe’s Saturday morning market is a must-see! Full of flavours, scents and colours, it is packed with regional produce and stretches over 2km.

Les Tourelles Gate : This is the only surviving gate from the medieval town ramparts. It was used as a prison during the French Revolution, and is now a private residence.

La Place du Puits Salé : This square with its well stands out in the heart of the old town. Its name, meaning ‘Square of the Salted Well’, indicates how, in olden days, as the tide rose, sea water mixed with the well’s water. On the Square, the Café des Tribunaux, occupying an 18th-century Norman building, has historic links to many famous visitors to Dieppe.

The port : Dieppe harbour, with its fishing port and marina, lies in the very heart of town. Trawlers and other fishing boats provide a colourful spectacle that still attracts numerous painters. Countless restaurants line up behind the quays.

Dieppe Mémorial 19 août 1942 : A former Dieppe theatre transformed into a museum dedicated to the doomed Dieppe Raid of August 1942, when a joint British-Canadian attack on the German-defended coast here ended in catastrophe for the Allies. Learn about the plan, code-named Operation Jubilee, and how lessons were learnt from its failure for the preparation of D-Day and Operation Overlord in Normandy two years later.

The Pollet neighbourhood : Located on the eastern side of the harbour, this was the traditional fishermen’s quarter of town and it preserves many fishermen’s homes built in typical bands of flint and stone.

Chapel of Notre-Dame de Bonsecours:  Perched above the eastern side of the harbour, this prominent 19th-century chapel was built for mariners and holds many touching ex votos left by sailors giving thanks for returning home safely from difficult times at sea.

Sailing and boating:  Dieppe offers plenty of sailing and other water sports. Several Dieppe boats offer outings on the sea. Check out the possibilities via the Dieppe Tourist Office.

Golf de Dieppe-Pourville : Set beside the dramatic cliffs between Dieppe and the neighbouring resort of Pourville to the west, this golf course was founded late in the 19th century and affords fabulous sea views. It was originally designed by specialist architect Willie Park Junior, attached to the Royal and Ancient in St Andrews, Scotland.

Château de Miromesnil : Birthplace of the writer Guy de Maupassant, whose stories of life and characters in 19th-century Normandy are classics.

A 15-minute drive from Dieppe is Varengeville-sur-Mer , undoubtedly one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Alabaster Coast . The church and its seaside cemetery superbly dominate the coast.

The Parc du Bois des Moutiers is one of the most visited gardens in France. It houses an impressive collection of giant rhododendrons (temporarily closed). The Shamrock Garden is home to the largest collection of hydrangeas in the world.

Visiting Dieppe

dieppe

History of Dieppe

While Dieppe’s most important industry today remains fishing, for centuries no one dared to brave the choppy waves in Dieppe, whose skies are often covered over by clouds. Nobody thought to bathe here for fun until the eccentric Duchesse de Berry tried it in 1806. She persuaded her aristocratic friends to follow her example, and Dieppe suddenly became a popular seaside resort. The craze for bathing spread, and when the railway from Paris arrived in 1848 Dieppe was on the map as a favorite destination for nobles, writers, musicians and painters. The twice-daily ferry crossing to Newhaven in the UK continue to make Dieppe especially popular among British tourists. Dieppe’s important port was fought over during the Hundred Years War, was the take-off point for thousands of colonists heading for Quebec in the 17th century and was the site of a failed Allied raid during WWII, an especially bloody battle during which many Allied soldiers (most of them from the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division) were killed and captured. Dieppe was also later liberated by the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, which explains the many Canadian flags you’ll see hanging in Dieppe.

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Seine-Maritime

Dieppe - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Seine-Maritime

Dieppe was the very first sea bathing destination in the country, back in the 19th century. Since then, the town has been one of Seine-Maritime 's most renowned seaside resorts. It certainly has no shortage of attractions and advantages. With its cliffs, beach, old town, fishing harbour and marina, gastronomy, and cultural sites, your visit will be particularly rewarding.

For an initial overview of this beautiful place, head to the 14th-century fortified castle in the heights of the town. From the esplanade, there is a lovely view over the town's rooftops and the pebble beach! Inside, discover the museum with its remarkable collection of ivories carved right here in Dieppe between the 16th and 20th centuries, as well as an exhibition on the maritime history of the town including model ships, maps and navigational instruments, but also works of art such as 19th and 20th-century French paintings, 16th and 17th-century Dutch paintings, and prints by Georges Braque.

If you like old buildings, the Church of St. James and the Church of St. Remigius will also satisfy your curiosity. The former dates from 1195 and has a large 14th-century portal, a 15th-century belfry tower 42 metres high, and a 16th-century chevet. The latter was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and has a choir with magnificent woodwork. In the town centre, the picturesque Place du Puits Salé marks the place where sea water used to mix with the fresh water from the well when the tide was high.

If you want to know more about the coastline and Normandy 's biodiversity, the Estran - Cité de la Mer sea museum will take you on a journey through various themes such as sea fishing, shipbuilding, navigation and marine life.

Dieppe is also a destination that will delight gourmets. At this major scallop fishing port, you can sample the famous seafood in all its forms. Known as the king of fish, herring is also one of the local specialities and even has its own festival in November.

If you want to see an amazing display, the International Kite Festival takes place there in September every two years, in even years. Enthusiasts from all over the world, a big parade, and brightly coloured kites, each one more beautiful than the one before it: all this has been the recipe for an unmissable event since 1980!

15 Best Things to Do in Dieppe (France)

Winning fame as the closest beach to Paris , the seafront at Dieppe has a long line of 19th-century mansions and hotels from when sea resorts first became fashionable.

The windswept pebble beach is invigorating in winter and promises classic fun in the sun in summer.

But Dieppe is a lot more than a resort, as you’ll discover at the working fishing port lined by painted houses.

The city is awash with maritime charm, in its old-world fishing districts and historic castle laden with the riches of 16th-century sea expeditions.

Dieppe is on the Côte d’Albâtre (Alabaster Coast), which was adored by impressionists like Monet, Renoir and Sisley who came to paint the white cliffs and seaside villages.

Lets explore the best things to do in Dieppe :

1. Château de Dieppe

Château de Dieppe

High to the west of the harbour and fishing port, Dieppe’s 15th-century castle happens to be the oldest building in the city as it avoided a titanic bombardment by the Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1694. The flint and sandstone castle has a rectangular plan, with circular towers on each corner, but it’s what’s inside that is most fascinating.

There are three rooms dedicated to Dieppe’s 17th-century ivory trade with Guinea, which includes solar discs, fans, tobacco graters, snuff boxes, medallion portraits all sculpted with awesome skill (if you don’t think too much about where they came from!). In the art collection are 12 works by the cubist painter Georges Braque, who is buried not far away in Sainte-Marguerite-sur-Mer.

2. Église Saint-Jacques

Église Saint-Jacques

Dieppe’s main church was begun in the 1100s and not completed until the 1500s, and so it’s a complete monument to every stage of gothic architecture in France.

The western rose window has very intricate traceries, and see if you can count all of the gargoyles on the facade, because there are more than a hundred.

The eminent fleet-owner Jean Ango, who supplied King Francis I with his vessels for global exploration, was a patron of the church in the 15th century.

He commissioned the carved frieze in the Chappelle du Trésor, which depicts Brazilian Indians as described by sailors and explorers returning to Dieppe from their expeditions.

3. Dieppe’s Fishing Port

Dieppe's Fishing Port

On foot you could spend an engaging couple of hours pottering around the quays and fishing quarter in Dieppe.

The obvious place to start is Quai Henri IV, with Dieppe’s grandest waterside buildings and loads of bars, restaurants and cafes favoured with lovely views  through the forest of boat masts to the Pollet Quarter.

Dieppe is France’s scallop capital and the boats in the harbour go out to sea for as little as one night at a time, returning to sell their scallops at the early-morning quayside market.

4. Plage de Dieppe

Plage de Dieppe

Yes it’s pebbly, but that takes nothing away from Dieppe’s main beach, which runs on for kilometres, way past the western boundary of the city.

The foreshore has spacious lawns, a kind of green belt, separating the beach from the imposing 19th-century hotels, mansions and apartment blocks on Boulevard de Verdun.

In cooler seasons you can come for the blustery and restorative sea air, working up an appetite before retiring to the fishing harbour for lunch.

And in mid-September on even years is the biennial International Kite Festival, bringing a blaze of colour to the beach and holding a packed program of events.

5. Le Pollet

Le Pollet

The quaintest neighbourhood in Dieppe is Le Pollet, a village on the right bank of the Arques estuary at the foot of the chalk cliffs.

Instead of walking all the way around the harbour to get there you can take a shortcut on Pont Colbert, which we’ll come to later.

Le Pollet has some adorable old streets, like the cobblestone Rue du Petit Fort, which climbs from the waterside and has painted timber-framed houses and pretty fishing cottages with flint walls.

Stroll up for a few minutes to the top of the cliff you can reach the Notre-Dame de Bonsecours chapel with Dieppe’s best panorama of the city and its fishing port.

6. Le Pont Colbert

Le Pont Colbert

The bridge that links Le Pollet to the rest of Dieppe is a wonder in its own right.

Le Pont Colbert is the oldest swing bridge in the world still using its original mechanism.

The bridge is in constant use as it’s  the only easy way to get downtown from Le Pollet, and when there’s maritime traffic you can see the spectacle of this structure swinging back to let it through.

It dates to 1889 and is a remarkable piece of late-19th century technology.

Efforts are being made to make sure the bridge is protected as an historic monument.

7. Estran – Cité de la Mer

Estran - Cité de la Mer

In this museum in the former fishing quarter you’ll find out everything you need to know about the natural and human history of the Channel.

More than 1,600 square metres of galleries will introduce you to Dieppe’s historic local trades like shipbuilding and fishing, and there are aquariums showing off the species native to these waters.

In the natural history exhibits you can see how the local chalk cliffs in Dieppe were formed, and all of the measures being taken to preserve coastal habitats.

8. August 1942 Memorial

August 1942 Memorial

In a 19th-century neo-renaissance theatre on Place Camille Saint-Saëns there’s a small exhibition to commemorate the Anglo-Canadian raid on Dieppe on 19 August 1942. The attack was doomed from the start and within hours thousands had been killed or captured, making it clear how long it would be before the Allies could mount a successful invasion of mainland Europe.

There are documents, photographs, weapons and uniforms from the time of the raid, and you can watch a 40-minute film with first-hand accounts by soldiers who took part in the attack.

9. Villa Perrotte

Rue Jules Ferry is lined with red brick Belle Époque townhouses, and then halfway along you come to a geometric and asymmetrical white art deco mansion that resembles nothing else on the street.

Villa Perrotte was built in 1928,commissioned by Pierre Perrotte, who made his fortune in fish oil, and designed by Parisian architect Louis Filliol.

From Thursday to Sunday you can enter for free and can appreciate the stained glass windows, wrought iron radiations, marble fireplaces and beautiful tiling on the floors.

There’s also art contemporary art to see, if you can peel your eyes from the building itself.

10. Manoir d’Ango

Manoir d'Ango

We mentioned Jean Ango, the 16th-century fleet owner at the Church of Saint-Jacques, and ten minutes west of Dieppe you can find out where he lived.

Open from April to September, Ango’s manor house is a lovely brick and flint palace, built by Italian architects and used as a summer residence until Ango’s death in 1551. In the courtyard is one of the most spectacular dovecotes in existence: It has a byzantine-style dome and its walls are festooned with alternating bands of flint, brick, sandstone and limestone.

The dovecote, which was a bit of a status symbol in renaissance times, could contain more than 3,200 birds and had 1,600 pigeonholes.

11. Bois des Moutiers

Bois des Moutiers

In the Pays de Caux countryside near Manoir d’Ango is a sublime garden and manor house with views of the sea.

When Guillaume Mallet acquired this land in 1898 he hired the esteemed British gardener Gertrude Jekyll and the architect Edwin Lutyens to create a large park that would take more than 40 years to complete.

The result is classified as a French “jardin remarquable” and boasts 12 hectares of giant Himalayan rhododendrons, magnolias and Chinese azaleas around a beautiful mock-Tudor manor house.

You’ll note the interplay between the design of the garden and the layout of the house, which were intended to mirror each other.

12. Avenue Verte

Avenue Verte

Starting in Arques-la-Bataille, the Avenue Verte is a 40-kilometre cycling route along the old Paris -Dieppe railway.

The line is long gone and has been covered with smooth tarmac that lets you roll through lush green farmland with minimal effort.

For a family outing you ride the 12.6 kilometres to St-Vaast d’Equique ville next to a string of large lakes.

These are vestiges of Dieppe’s shipbuilding industry, where rock was quarried for ballasting on vessels.

At the beginning of the route allow a few minutes to explore the ghostly 14th-century ruins of the Château d’Arques-la-Bataille.

13. Château de Miromesnil

Château de Miromesnil

Guy de Maupassant, the 19th-century short story writer, was born at this palatial property 10 kilometres from Dieppe.

You can go inside to admire the interiors and see the room in which he was delivered.

One room has been preserved as a mid-19th-century lounge to give you a sense of the château when it was occupied by Maupassant’s family.

The rest of the building has the wood panelling, wrought-ironwork and furniture of a stately home from the 1700s.

The grounds are a must too for their beech forest and a 200-year-old Lebanese cedar.

The walled kitchen garden is magnificent, with orchards and all sorts of vegetable allotments alive with butterflies in the summer.

14. Veules-les-Roses

Veules-les-Roses

The Pays de Caux has welcomed many celebrated artists, who have all been attracted by the drama of these towering chalk cliffs.

Claude Monet spent time in Pourville (part of Hautot-sur-Mer) right next to Dieppe in 1882, where he painted the local seascapes.

Veules-les-Roses, around 15 minutes by car from Dieppe, is an adorable village with medieval churches and three watermills with wheels intact.

These were powered by the River Veules, which replenishes bubbling pools growing watercress.

The village nestle in a small gap in the cliffs, and the beach in front is a mixture of pebbles and sand.

15. Apple Country

apple brandy

Normandy is France’s apple orchard, and this fruit is at the core of all sorts of regional specialities.

La Gentilhommière, driveable from Dieppe in Osmoy-Saint-Valery is a cider press in a magnificent mansion from the 1600s surrounded by a sea of orchards.

Here you’ll get the inside track on how Normandy cider is pressed, fermented and bottled, and also learn about Calvados, the apple brandy that is also distilled made on this site.

In the shop you can buy both drinks, as well as freshly-pressed apple juice and apple vinegar.

The local cheese is the famous neufchâtel, which pairs well with Normandy cider and has a salty, sharp flavour and soft texture.

Dieppe has a long and interesting history, having been an important port linking William the Conqueror's English kingdom with his Normandy duchy in the 11th century, and later an important port for smuggling. It endured centuries of conflict right up until 1944. Today, it's an important ferry and fishing port, and a pleasant seaside resort.

Perhaps because of its drippy-sounding name, Dieppe is unfairly characterised in the British media as a boring and rainy resort, popular only for its ease of access from Newhaven . Well, the town can't do anything about the weather, but there is little truth to the rest of the cliché. Dieppe is in fact the nearest beach resort to Paris, and is lively all year round. It has a fine beach, a good range of activities, several pretty harbours, lots of attractive brick architecture and numerous critically-acclaimed seafood restaurants.

Dieppe is also well-known for a raid on the area during World War II , on the 19th of August 1942, by a predominantly Canadian force. Casualties were heavy and some consider the attack a disaster for the Allies, but others argue that it provided intelligence that was essential in planning the D-Day invasion. Later in the war, as the Allies drove east after D-Day, Canadian troops had the left flank and liberated Dieppe. You will rarely find a French flag flying in Dieppe without a Canadian flag alongside it.

Are you planning a trip to Dieppe, Normandy? You wonder what to see and do in Dieppe? This city offers a nice balance between architecture, history and nature. It is an ideal destination for a weekend in Normandy or a vacation on the Alabaster Coast. Here is our guide with more than 25 ideas to visit Dieppe and its region with tips, map and photos.

Best things to do in Dieppe Normandy

Best things to do in Dieppe – our top 5

Is dieppe worth a visit.

I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the heart of the city. To give you some background, I am originally from Le Havre, and there is a lot of rivalry between the cities of the Côte d’Albâtre. I grew up thinking Dieppe was dull and boring. But oh, I was wrong. It’s not my favorite city in the region, but it’s still on my list of the best cities in Normandy . It offers a good balance between nature, views, architecture, history… and a good atmosphere.

Turrets - historic gateway from the sea to the city

Why is Dieppe famous?

It is not the most famous city in Normandy. But it is quite well known as the arrival port of the Newhaven ferry. It is famous for its port, its castle and its scallops.

Even if you don’t visit the castle, we recommend that you climb to the path behind it. The views are some of the best in the city: the fort itself, the city, the beach and the sea! In addition, you can see the remains of bunkers from the Second World War. You can easily walk there from the city center. It is possible to get there by car, but parking spaces are limited.

#2 – Pedestrian streets

Dieppe Pedestrian streets

We love walking through the pedestrian streets and discovering the different styles of architecture. They did a great job of adding signs on specific buildings to share their history. For example, the Hotel de Londres was often visited by Delacroix, who painted The Sea (view from the heights of Dieppe) in 1852.

#3 – St. James Church

St. James Church

What surprised us the most were the 2 churches of similar size not far from each other. The main one is Saint Jacques. It was a pilgrimage church on the way to Compostela, built between the 12th and 16th centuries. It is a large church: 82m long, 30m wide and 20m under the arches. Moreover, the bell tower is 42m high. Take the time to enter and admire the nave, the rose window, the organ and the many chapels.

#4 – St Remy Church

St Remy Church

The other big church is St Remy. It was built in the 16th and 17th centuries (with elements added in the 18th). It has a classical facade that contrasts with its interior: wooden panels in the choir, an amazing organ, and golden decorations under colorful stained glass windows.

#5 – The Port of Dieppe

The port of Dieppe

As I wrote earlier, Dieppe is famous for its deep water port. It has been a fishing village for a long time. There are several areas around which you can walk around admiring either the pleasure boats or the fishing boats. I really like the views from the Quai Henri IV with the cliffs of Le Pollet in the background.

#6 – Turrets Gate

Turrets Gate

It is the only remaining gate of the ramparts surrounding the medieval city. There were 7 before. It was built in the 15th century. It was used as a prison in the 19th century.

#7 – Dieppe Beach and Waterfront Walk

Dieppe beach and seafront promenade

Dieppe’s waterfront is quite nice because there are no buildings right next to the beach. There is a large promenade, green areas, children’s games and a swimming pool. It separates the beach from the Boulevard de Verdun with its hotels and mansions. You can look north or south and see the impressive chalk cliffs of the Alabaster Coast . The very long beach is made of pebbles and at low tide, the sand appears.

#8 – Colbert Bridge

Dieppe Pont Colbert

There is an intriguing bridge that connects the old neighborhood of Le Pollet to the center of Dieppe: the Pont Colbert. It is the oldest swing bridge in Europe that still uses its original water mechanism (and it is used all the time when boats need to pass). It was built in 1889. Since 2020, it is protected as a historical monument.

#9 – Pollet neighborhood

On the other side of the bridge, north of the Arques River, is the old neighborhood of Pollet. This is where you can find the traditional fishermen’s houses (built of flint and stone).

#10 – View of the Notre Dame de Bonsecours Chapel

Notre Dame de Bonsecours Chapel

Above the Pollet district, at the top of the cliffs, is the Notre Dame de Bonsecours chapel. It was built in the 19th century so that sailors would be protected when they were at sea. From the square in front of it, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city, the waterway to the port and the cliffs.

What to visit in Dieppe ? 9 experiences

#11 – dieppe castle.

Dieppe Castle

At the top of the cliff, overlooking the city, you can’t miss it: stands the impressive castle of Dieppe. The fort was largely built in the 15th century with flint and sandstone (at the end of the Hundred Years War). It is the oldest building in the city. Today, inside the castle, you can find the Dieppe museum with many exhibitions related to the history of the port, from the spice trade to the paintings of the impressionists. See the opening hours here .

#12 – Foreshore, City of the Sea

Foreshore, City of the Sea

First of all a warning, it is called Cité de la Mer, but don’t expect giant aquariums like in the famous “Cité de la Mer” in Cherbourg. However, it is still worth a visit. It is a museum about

  • the city’s maritime traditions (historical trades, shipbuilding, fishing…)
  • the geology of the region
  • the fauna of the Channel with aquariums (including open basins to be able to touch them).

See the opening hours here .

#13 – 19 August 1942 Memorial

Memorial of August 19, 1942

This building, located right next to the Tourelles gate, is a museum dedicated to the Dieppe raid of August 1942. Operation Jubilee was a joint British and Canadian attack that ended in disaster. But the lessons learned during this operation helped prepare for D-Day and Operation Overlord. Even if you don’t visit, enjoy the architecture of this 19th century neo-renaissance building, which was once a theater.

#14 – Bathing or spa at the Dieppe Baths

Dieppe Baths

Dieppe was one of the first seaside resorts in France, when sea bathing became very popular. There have been spas along the beach for a long time. Today, you can still enjoy the pleasure of the water with a pool and spa offering views of the sea, the castle and the cliffs. See opening hours and prices here .

#15 – Casino

Dieppe Casino

If gambling is an activity you enjoy, you can go to the Casino on the seafront. You can also enjoy its restaurant with a panoramic view.

#16 – Sailing or kitesurfing

Sailing in Dieppe

With its long beach and its marina, Dieppe offers many water sports:

  • Kitesurfing
  • Windsurfing
  • Diving (3 wrecks: Gauss, Jonquille, Tintin)

#17 – Eat seafood

Dieppe scallop

Like all the Alabaster coast, the port of Dieppe is famous for its seafood, in particular: herring and scallops. Dieppe (and other towns in Normandy) even has a herring and scallop festival. It is a great festival that gathers more than 100,000 people every year. Dieppe is the first scallop fishing port in France. The Herring and Scallop Festival is normally held in November. In 2019, it celebrated its 50th edition.

#18 – Kite Festival

Another famous experience in Dieppe is the International Kite Festival. It is one of the largest in the world and is held every two years in September. So many colors and shapes to watch flying over the beach! Read more

#19 – Dieppe-Pourville Golf Course

Thanks to its magnificent cliffs, the Alabaster Coast offers great golf courses with magnificent views. To the west of Dieppe, there is the Dieppe-Pourville golf course founded in the 19th century.

#20 – Château de Miromesnil

Castle of Miromesnil

Near Dieppe (15min drive), you can discover the Château de Miromesnil. This castle is famous for having been the birthplace of the writer Guy de Maupassant. #21 – Varengeville-sur-Mer / Gorge des Moutiers

Varangeville sur Mer / Gorge des moutiers

The very high cliffs of the Côte d’Albâtre sometimes have narrow valleys that reach the sea. These valleys are called “Valleuses”. In Varengeville-sur-Mer, west of Dieppe (20min drive), there is one under the Saint Valéry church. The path is called the Gorge des Moutiers, it is a short but steep hike to reach the beach. Very impressive! See our article .

#22 – Ango Manor

Ango Manor

A 20min drive west of Dieppe, you can also visit one of my favorite manors in Normandy: Le Manoir d’Ango. Built in brick and flint, in the 16th century, we can see the influence of Italian architects. It is famous for its magnificent dovecote in the courtyard: a Byzantine style dome and walls in alternating bands of flint, brick, sandstone and limestone. Open from April to September. See the opening hours here .

#23 – Garden Bois des Moutiers

If you like gardens, the Bois des Moutiers is one of the most famous in Normandy, notably for its collection of giant rhododendrons. It was created in the first half of the 20th century. Check the opening hours here .

Other useful information about Dieppe

Its history – in brief.

The Vikings settled here because of the deep waters that made it easy for ships to dock. The region has always been a fishing area. The oldest mention of Dieppe dates back to 1030, as a small fishing port. But the main center of life in the region was Arques. In 1067, William the Conqueror left Dieppe to go to Great Britain. It then had a tumultuous history due to the conflicts in the region between the French and the English. It began to develop in the 14th century, and really took off in the 15th century thanks to trade. It reached its peak in the 16th century. Later, in the 19th century, Dieppe became a seaside resort (one of the first in France) as Parisians began to take vacations by the sea. The sea baths were created in 1822.

About the name

Dieppe takes its name from the English word “deep”. It is due to the fact that the port offers deep water. The river Arques cut deeply into the chalky plateau and large ships were able to enter the harbor. It received its name around the 7th and 8th centuries.
