Visiting Claremont California: A Complete Guide from a Local

I’ll never waver from saying Claremont is LA’s best-kept secret. I mean, I created a whole blog dedicated to this amazing city! Claremont is located about 30 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles and rests at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains giving you access to mountain views year-round.

Downtown Claremont is referred to as “Claremont Village” and is bursting at the seams with charming architecture, art galleries, museums, boutiques, high-caliber restaurants, coffee shops, specialty retail stores, pocket parks, tree-lined streets, and so much more.

Claremont is known as the “City of Trees and PhDs'' as it’s home to 7 prestigious Claremont Colleges, 24,000+ trees, and a large population with college degrees. The feel is a small town and yet eccentric in its own sophisticated and quaint way.

I’ve been living in Claremont since 2015 and was smitten on day one. If you are looking to explore cities that are total gems, go on a day trip to Claremont and follow this ultimate visitors guide.

Coffee Shops in Claremont

Start your day in Claremont on the right foot by grabbing a coffee, espresso drink, or tea at one of the many specialty coffee shops in Claremont.

Iron & Kin is located inside the historic Claremont Packing House and they serve high-quality drip coffee along with specialty lattes called “affirmation lattes.” Try the Worthy (brown sugar, vanilla, figs) or Kind Hearted (cacao, chipotle, pasilla chilies, cinnamon) latte.

Rev’d Up Coffee & Classics is my personal favorite coffee shop in Claremont for their classic car vibe, Stumptown drip coffee, variety of espresso drinks, and delicious food menu. Try their breakfast burrito, avocado lox, or sandwiches.

Nosy Neighbor is in the heart of Claremont Village serving coffee, lattes, and mini donuts. Choose your own sugar to sprinkle on your donuts and take your coffee across the street at Shelton Park for a scenic morning view.

The Last Drop Cafe located on Harvard Ave and will completely fulfill your coffee, sandwich, soup, salad, and cookie needs. There is limited seating inside, so grab a seat outside or walk up to Shelton Park to enjoy your morning cup of Joe.

Lucky’s Coffee is located off the beaten path in Claremont on Foothill Blvd and offers a robust coffee and tea menu and rotating lattes around the seasons and holidays. They roast their own beans and have ample space to sit, work out of your laptop, and/or relax in the morning.

Visit the Claremont Colleges

What’s a visit to Claremont without seeing the Claremont Colleges? There are seven Claremont Colleges and I suggest taking a stroll through Scripps College which has often been referred to as one of the most beautiful college campuses in America.

Walk through Scripps College to find an orange grove, Spanish gothic style architecture, manicured lawns, a secret garden called Margaret Fowler Garden , the Denison Library, and so much more! You’ll feel like you’re walking into a movie set as the beauty is endless.

Fun fact, I took my engagement photos at Scripps College.

Pomona College is another must see Claremont College campus. I recommend taking a casual walk around the green belt in front of Bridges Auditorium, sit in front of the magical water fountain at the Stanley Academic Quadrangle , uncover a hidden time capsule at the Richardson Garden behind the Seaver House (Pomona College Alumni office), watch an orchestra performance at Bridges Hall of Music, or visit the Pomona College Organic Farm .

Before sunset or sunrise, make your way to the James Turrell Skyspace at Pomona College for a lighting program called Dividing the Light 𑁋no reservations needed. Visitors can watch the sunrise or sunset on benches beneath a canopy that frames a window to the sky where the lighting changes colors, from goldenrod to turquoise which alters the viewer’s perception of the sky.

Outdoor Claremont Activities

There are so many things to do in Claremont, especially outdoors. Luckily, Claremont is home to the California Botanic Garden 𑁋an 86-acre garden housing the largest collection of plants native to plants native to California. Here you’ll find a 300 year old Majestic Oak, redwood groves, Joshua trees, fan palms, valley oaks, a turtle pond, wildflower meadows, and so much more. Allow yourself 1-2 hours to go through the gardens.

Since Clarermont is situated at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, there are hiking trails abound! The 5-mile Claremont Loop is the most well known however my favorite is Potato Mountain and Johnson's Pasture . Refer to this blog post for more Claremont hiking options.

If hiking is a bit much for you, walk along the scenic Thompson Creek Trail 𑁋a flat 4.4 mile trail that gladly accommodates strollers, scooters, bikes, and dog walkers. Higginbotham Park is along this trail and is one of Claremont’s most beautiful parks.

Dining in Claremont

Claremont has a plethora of dining options from a casual breakfast or lunch to a fine dining experience. When you visit Claremont you will surely have a great dining experience at any of these spots.

Brunch/Lunch

Union on Yale is always at the top of my list for brunch and lunch for their whimsical outdoor patio, craft cocktails, and quality ingredients.

Bardot is the place to be for weekend brunch with their bottomless mimosas and loaded bloody mary’s, scenic views while dining outdoors, and extensive menu serving contemporary cuisine.

Eureka Burger is the #1 place to go for a gourmet burger paired with a local craft beer. Located in the Claremont Packing House, Eureka Burger offers an array of appetizers, salad entrees, and sandwiches paired with an Old Fashioned as they specialize in whiskey.

Le Pain Quotidien is the ideal spot to have a slow morning sipping a cappuccino, enjoying the rustic decor while eating a yummy quiche. Their European inspired menu includes bread baked fresh daily, omelets, sandwiches, soups, fresh pastries, and so much more.

Don’t forget the carafe of Sangria or their infamous Spanish coffee.

Guss’s BBQ is conveniently located in the historic Claremont Packing House and never disappoints with atmosphere, service, southern comfort food and impressive range of whiskey, wine, cocktails, and craft beer. Try and get a seat outside on the North side where you’ll get a clear view of the mountains and enjoy the sunset.

If you’re anything like me and love a nightcap, head over to these places for an after dinner drink.

Walter’s Restaurant has a loungey style courtyard with firepits, plenty of seating and a walk up bar. Their margaritas are the best in town and they have a plethora of craft beers to choose from.

The Whisper House is located in the Claremont Packing House and if you want to sit at the bar top and sip on craft cocktails especially their whiskey based ones. Depending on the weather you can grab a seat in their outdoor patio.

Stay Overnight in Claremont

Want to stay overnight? Book a room at Hotel Casa 425 𑁋a spanish style boutique hotel with only 28 rooms. Wowww the Skyspace looks amazing! 🙌 I have to check that out!

I love your post! It truly is a complete guide of the best of Claremont. There are two places I would love to visit: 1) the California Botanic Garden to see the California native plants, and 2) The Quarter Creole Cuisine to try their Crawfish Biscuit appetizer. It looks so tempting in that picture! 🤗

This college town, less than an hour’s drive from L.A., makes for a perfect day trip

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Good morning, fellow Escapists.

Maybe it’s the hazy memory of school bus rides, or piling into a friend’s car at 7:15 a.m. to get to homeroom on time, or that first long, nervous ride to college with a plastic shower caddy poking me in the ribs.

Whatever the reason, back-to-school season always feels linked to travel in my mind.

My colleague Christopher Reynolds, who happens to have a daughter heading off to college this year, recently rounded up a list of the nine best college towns in California .

Each is a travel destination in its own right — and one is a perfect day trip for Angelenos.

Just 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles, Claremont is home to a consortium of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate schools, more than 20,000 trees and so much more.

That “so much more” includes its famous Packing House — worth a newsletter edition in itself — as well as fossils, folk music and a very photogenic train station.

But before we travel east to Claremont, let’s direct our gaze west to the coastline.

Earlier this summer, a reader sent me a helpful tool for planning beach adventures: the California Coastal Records Project . Made up of more than 96,000 photographs, it offers a continuous aerial view of the entire California coast, apart from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Use it to get a better look at what to expect on your next visit to a new beach.

Do you have a travel recommendation you’d like to share with fellow readers? As always, my inbox is open .

🎵 Hear live music at the Folk Music Center

The Folk Music Center started out in the back of Boots Beer’s Real Estate Office on Harvard Avenue in Claremont. It was 1958, and Charles and Dorothy Chase needed a place where they could celebrate the instruments and records they loved so dearly.

It wasn’t long before Dorothy was teaching hundreds of kids and adults to play guitar, banjo and other folk instruments, while Charles focused on instrument repair.

Today, the center is owned by Charles and Dorothy’s grandson, Grammy-winning artist Ben Harper . It’s a family affair; his mom, Ellen Harper, manages day-to-day operations (Ellen served as one of Reynolds’ “local guides” in his guide to California college towns ).

“It could never be a normal upbringing in a place like this,” Ben Harper told Steve Appleford, a former features editor for Times Community News, in 2014. “It’s an oddity that has produced the last 20-some years of my adult life making music. Not only musically but the principles of this place — its music, its art, its poetry, its politics, its spirituality.”

The Folk Music Center is home to hundreds of hard-to-find musical instruments and items from around the globe. Time your visit to Claremont to coincide with one of the center’s open-mic nights, which take place on the last Sunday of every month, Reynolds reports.

“If you want to drop names, Phoebe Bridgers got her start here at our open mic. Not that long ago,” Ellen Harper told Reynolds.

🦕 See fossils, dinosaur footprints and more on a high school campus

On a visit to Claremont, take time to stroll the campus of one or two of its colleges. Ellen Harper (mentioned above) recommends the “lovely grounds” of Scripps College, as well as the John R. Rodman Arboretum at Pitzer College.

But Claremont’s colleges aren’t the only academic institutions worth visiting while in town. “The private Webb Schools have their own Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, the only nationally accredited museum in the country located on a high school campus,” Times features writer Jeannette Marantos reported in 2019.

Since the 1930s, Webb students have taken fossil-collecting trips — and during the 1960s, a museum was created to house their finds. Visitors to the museum today can see highlights such as the Hall of Footprints, which houses an impressive fossil track and trackway collection. It includes a trackway (or sequence of tracks from one organism) from a “bear-dog” carnivore, and dinosaur tracks from Arizona and Utah and beyond. Windows in the walls allow visitors to peek into a fossil preparation lab, a collections storage room and more.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Can’t make it there in person? You can take a virtual tour using this link .

A Victorian home painted green with dark red accents is seen from a distance with blue sky in the background.

🏘️ Go on a scavenger hunt for Claremont’s architectural gems

Love visiting open houses on the weekends? You’ll get much the same thrill out of this architectural driving tour of Claremont.

Claremont is a wonderland of Victorian, Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman buildings, Times contributor Sharon Boorstin reported last year. She mapped out a path that takes travelers and locals past some of its most notable and aesthetically pleasing spots.

The city’s “Victorian Row” includes the impossible-to-miss Sumner House, one of the oldest houses in Claremont. “A classic Victorian, the house features towers, gables and leaded-glass bay windows, elaborate exterior wood ornamentation and a wraparound porch,” Boorstin writes.

Built in Pomona in 1887, the home was transported a mile and a half to Claremont via horse-drawn moving van in 1901, she reported. The journey took six weeks.

Another gem? Claremont Depot, a Spanish Revival-style train station dating back to 1927. “The best place to admire the details — gabled red tile roof, Moorish arches, elaborate concrete Churrigueresque trim — is from the side that faces the tracks,” Boorstin suggests.

While you’re there, pop into the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art housed in the depot. Not sure you want to drive to Claremont? You can also travel to the station via Metrolink train.

🌳 Marvel at Claremont’s many trees — and the tallest peak in L.A. County

They call Claremont “the city of trees and PhDs,” so it’s only right that your next visit include a bit of time in nature. If you need a place to start, keep your eyes peeled for the American elms at Memorial Park and the Eucalyptus trees on College Avenue — and they’re just some of the more than 20,000 trees that grow within the city.

Claremont is also home to both the California Botanic Garden and Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Reynolds writes.

If you’re looking to break a serious sweat and see some seriously expansive views, you should consider a 20-minute drive north to Mt. Baldy, where you can attempt to summit the tallest peak in Los Angeles County.

Right now is a great time to hike Mt. Baldy. Conditions are usually best between June and October, Mary Forgione reported in The Wild earlier this summer. Weekends at the summit can have a party vibe; don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to fellow hikers while you’re there. Who knows, you might get lucky like Mary did and meet some hiking A-listers .

Hat tip to a Scripps alum for the Mt. Baldy recommendation.

By Karin Swanson / Matador Network

THERE'S SO MUCH GOING ON IN OAKLAND that using it as a mere stopover en route to somewhere else doesn't make much sense.
