After a decade in France , I still find myself wandering through Paris and thinking, "Wow, I can’t believe I live here." The City of Light is full of all the best clichés: Parisians cycling with bread in their bike basket, brass bands serenading crowds on stone bridges over the Seine, picnickers drinking Champagne and eating cheese on blankets in front of the Eiffel Tower. 

The capital city's mélange of modern and medieval architecture, stunning symmetrical gardens, and vibrant café terraces add to its romantic allure — and that's all part of what makes Paris a city designed for strolling. Whether you want to visit major landmarks like the Louvre and Arc de Triomphe or are looking for more off-the-beaten-path experiences, we’ve polled local cookbook authors, hotel concierges, and tour guides to build a list of the 30 best things to do in Paris.

“When you're in Paris, you absolutely have to pay a visit to one of the city's fromageries (cheese shops) — and there are so many wonderful ones to choose from,” says Emily Monaco , a journalist and cheese expert who leads Paris by Mouth food tours. A few of her favorites: La Laiterie de Paris , the first in town to produce its own cheese, and Fromagerie Quatrehomme , whose house specialties include a smoked Charolais chèvre aged in Nikka Whisky.

Have lunch at Les Enfants du Marché.

Weekend brunch is becoming more popular in Paris (the line at Holybelly never seems to dwindle), but I prefer snagging a seat at the counter of Les Enfants du Marché , in the back of the covered Marché des Enfants Rouge in the Marais neighborhood . The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so arrive just before it opens at noon so you won’t have to wait too long. Plan to linger over natural wine and a mix of market-fresh plates as the music slowly shifts, turning the venue into a bit more of a party as the day goes on.

Go gourmet at La Grande Epicérie.

Attached to the first Parisian department store, Le Bon Marché , the ground floor La Grande Epicérie is an upscale version of the city’s covered markets and food halls. Peruse the stands of fruits and vegetables or shop the curated selection of artisanal products. I’ll often stop here for freshly shucked oysters and a glass of white wine when I need a break from shopping next door.

Indulge in pastries.

“The city’s boulevards are brimming with enticing pastries that run the gamut, from exquisite luxury creations housed in palace hotels, like Francois Perret’s strawberry fraisier at Ritz Paris , to the equally delicious yet humble vanilla choux à la crème at Mamiche boulangerie,” says Frank Barron , author of "Sweet Paris: Seasonal Recipes from an American Baker in France."

Dedicate an entire weekend day to strolling the stands and stalls of vintage designer jewelry, clothing, furniture, records, and books at the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. Considered the largest flea market in the world, there are more than 2,000 boutiques here, and they're scattered across more than a dozen individual markets. Celebrate couture at Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris.

Retrospective displays and thematic exhibitions are constantly rotating, and once a month, the conservation workshop — which contains sketches, diagrams of runway shows, and runway pieces and accessories — opens to the public.

In the summer, the Buttes-Chaumont Park is as popular a picnic destination as Paris Plages along the banks of the Seine. Even Emily and Alfie spread out a blanket on one of the grassy hills here during a scene in Emily in Paris .

Cruise the canals.

One of the best ways to tour Paris is from the water, especially cruising along canals through the heart of the city past landmarks like the Eiffel Tower. “It's a different way of seeing the city, and at night it's even more magical,” says Pierre Cortin, head bartender at Hotel Fouquet’s Paris . Join a themed or hour-long trip along the Canal Saint-Martin or Seine, or book a private pontoon boat , where you can curate the playlist and bring your own selection of wine and snacks.

Catch a DJ set at Rooftop Molitor.

Emily also spent a day poolside at nautical-themed Molitor , and the beach club vibe seen in the show is recreated in summer on the rooftop. Head up for lunch or dinner throughout the week or catch a DJ set or concert in the late afternoon on the weekends.

Sip French spirits at Le Syndicat.

A gem on the somewhat seedy rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, speakeasy-style bar Le Syndicat champions French spirits in its playful cocktail concoctions that have earned it a permanent place on the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars. Guest bartenders take the reins here, and the soundtrack is heavy on hip-hop.

One of the standouts in the Marais, the Musée Picasso Paris is the perfect place to take a break from shopping or the summer heat. Housed in the 17th-century Hôtel Salé, the old mansion is as impressive as its collection of nearly 5,000 paintings, sculptures, and drawings by artist Pablo Picasso.

Shop perfume at Officine Universelle Buly.

Part apothecary, part café, Officine Universelle Buly’s wood-paneled boutique in the Haut-Marais takes you back centuries in history, to when the Rudier Foundry once created art for Rodin. Glass cases display the French beauty and skincare brand’s gorgeous bottles of perfume and lotion. If you’re looking for a souvenir to bring back from Paris, the shop will even emboss or engrave initials on its lip balm cases and combs.

Eat crêpes at Breizh Café.

The closest you’ll get to authentic Breton crêpes in Paris, the wood-paneled Breizh Café is a landmark in Le Marais — and a great place to pause from museums and shopping if you don’t want to linger over a long lunch. Take your pick of savory buckwheat crêpes and galettes topped with comté cheese and ham or go for something sweet like salted caramel and Chantilly cream.

Have a drink at Bar Hemingway.

Before officially moving to Paris, I visited Bar Hemingway every time I came to town. Serving some of the best cocktails in the city, the cigar lounge-style space lined with Hemingway memorabilia is still a go-to when friends visit and on special occasions. Be sure to arrive as the bar opens (or even before) since it doesn’t take reservations.

“The symbolist painter turned his childhood neoclassical townhouse into a museum several years before his death in 1898. The best part is that what visitors see today is almost precisely as he left it when he passed. You’ll find enough paintings, watercolors, and sketches to keep you occupied — but with far fewer tourists to elbow your way through,” says Lindsey Tramuta , author of "The New Paris" and "The New Parisienne."

Marvel at the beauty of Galerie Vivienne.

Galerie Vivienne is one of the most impressive covered arcades in the city, with restaurant and café patios spilling out on the natural light-illuminated mosaic floor. Browse a mix of boutiques, wine shops, and old bookstores here, or take a seat at a tea house or traditional bistro.

Have a seat at Café de Flore.

Live your own version of "Midnight in Paris" by sipping coffee in the old stomping grounds of the Lost Generation. Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse are dotted with Art Deco cafés once frequented by Hemingway and Picasso. One of the most fashionable is Café de Flore — you can’t beat the people watching from its outdoor terrace on the Boulevard Saint-Germain.

“I love the Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac , which has an incredible collection of primitive art from different civilizations, a panoramic terrasse with a menu created by Alain Ducasse, and cocktails by Margot Lecarpentier, the owner of Combat in Belleville,” says Timothée Prangee, co-owner and founder of farm-to-glass cocktail bar Little Red Door in the Marais.

Walk the grounds of Père Lachaise.

The infamous inhabitants and their ornate burial plots aren’t the only reason to visit the Père Lachaise cemetery — although it’s like a Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Gothic graves and Haussmannian burial chambers belonging to everyone from French poet Apollinaire to Jim Morrison and Edith Piaf. Blanketed in gardens and sculptures, Paris’s largest cemetery is as much a park as it is a monument to French culture.

Linger in Marché Saint-Germain.

“In a neighborhood that can feel so touristy, the Marché Saint-Germain is a hidden gem that you could walk right past. Don’t miss the superb coffee shop Le Café du Clown from the team behind Clown Bar , and before you leave the market, pick up a bottle of wine from the attached wine shop Bacchus et Ariane,” suggests Catherine Down , a Paris-based, James Beard Award-nominated food and travel writer and culinary tour guide.

Visit Belleville.

From the hillside Parc de Belleville and its 350-foot-high viewpoint, you’ll have some of the best panoramas of the Eiffel Tower, Centre Pompidou , and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Once one of the city’s largest water reservoirs, the area is home to everything from the Place des Fêtes flea market to the “quartier chinois,” with Asian grocery stores and restaurants lining the rue de Belleville. My go-to is Lao Siam , but I also love the more traditional French fare at nearby Le Baratin.

Japanese architect Tadao Ando modernized the Bourse de Commerce , whose history dates back to the 13th century and has served as everything from a convent to Catherine de Medici’s palace before being transformed into the contemporary art museum it is today. In addition to the collection of work François Pinault has curated over the past 50 years, the Bourse de Commerce hosts exhibitions designed specifically for its light-filled rotunda.

Peruse the shelves at Shakespeare and Company.

After checking Notre-Dame off your list, cross the Seine and peruse the titles on the leaning antique bookshelves of English bookstore Shakespeare and Company , which was once the meeting ground for the expat literary set in Paris. The café next door is also a great spot to sit and admire the adjacent cathedral while sipping the bookshop’s signature coffee blend.

Paris’s history stems from its landmark river, whose pedestrianized banks are bordered by gardens and museums like the Jean Nouvel-designed Institut du Monde Arabe . Brass bands and street musicians often perform along bridges like Pont des Arts, and bouquinistes (second-hand booksellers) set up stalls along walls overlooking the river. Two other bridges that are favorites of Victoire de Taillac, co-founder of Officine Universelle Buly: Pont Marie and Pont des Tournelles. Along the banks, you’ll also find floating bars, restaurants, and clubs housed in barges docked along the Seine, some of the most popular being Les Maquereaux and Rosa Bonheur .

Visit Canal Saint-Martin.

The cast-iron footbridges along the Canal Saint-Martin have made this backdrop one of the more iconic ones in Paris, yet it still feels less busy than other shopping and dining destinations like the Marais. Spend the afternoon browsing the collection at concept store Centre Commercial or design bookshop Artazart before sitting down for apéro on the terrace of Chez Prune or for oysters at Sur Mer .

Enjoy the facade of the Palais-Royal.

Across from the Louvre, Palais-Royal and its art installation of black-and-white-striped columns are a photo favorite. Grab a matcha latte from Café Kitsuné or ramen takeaway from the nearby rue Saint-Anne and post up on one of the benches in the courtyard gardens.

Shop for designer vintage goods.

Friends often ask for good vintage shops in Paris, and one of the best is Thanx God I'm a V.I.P. , off the Canal Saint-Martin. The shop stocks a mix of pieces from major designers and brands like Chanel and Hermès, plus a selection of reasonably priced vintage accessories like hats, scarves, and purses.

Visit concept shop Archive 18-20.

“Located in the trendy neighborhood of Le Marais, Archive 18-20 is more than a simple concept store — it’s a real Parisian hub where you’ll find an art gallery, book store, restaurant, and fashion all under the same roof,” says Stefan Viard, General Manager of SO/ in Europe.

We might be biased, but it really is. You can either wander these amazing locations or monuments and not really know what’s so significant (or that you just passed the first painting by a world-famous painter), or you can learn so many incredible details and stories about these places and art. Tour guides truly do elevate your experience and make it more memorable.

Our private tours can be customized within the museum or locations it already includes. So for instance, if you want more time in the Greek sculptures than in a room of impressionism, just let your guide know.

Hakuba at the Cheval Blanc Hotel (Paris 1st)

At Hakuba, Japanese chef Takuya Watanabe, formerly of MICHELIN-Starred Jin, collaborates with Three Star chef Arnaud Donckele of Plénitude (also in the Cheval Blanc and one of Paris’s most exclusive addresses), to create an extraordinary dining experience. The Dance Program at USF expanded the parameters of its curriculum by offering students a unique semester program of study in Paris starting in 2016, in addition to their dedicated summer program. Directed by USF Dance faculty member Michael Foley, and led by a world-class faculty of dance professionals, the USF Dance in Paris Semester Program is an altogether different kind of semester-long opportunity for serious dancers and choreographers to live, dance and study in one of the world’s greatest cities. The curriculum, as well as the multitude of performances and excursions included in the program’s offerings, present an opportunity for dance majors to expand their historical, cultural, and performance-based knowledge through exposure to the rich tradition of dance in the French capital, and immerse themselves in a vibrant European dance culture.

The USF Dance in Paris Semester Program features studio classes in a range of genres (contemporary, ballet, yoga and world dance forms), as well as extended choreography workshops and historical lectures taught by both Western and non-Western dancers and choreographers of distinction, thereby exposing students to the contemporary Continental dance lexicon as it relates to their own experience.

As Paris is the cradle of western dance civilization, students visit the sites of some of history’s greatest dance events, including The Paris Opera and Versailles, but students will also take full advantage of the city’s many museums and music venues, as well as those areas unique to the everyday life of the city, such as its cafés and the metro.

Students attend over 25 concerts and events by a diverse range of artists from around the world not usually seen in the U.S., thereby expanding their performance vocabulary. In 2023, students saw live performances by The Paris Opera Ballet, as well as performances of works by Hofesh Shecter, Crystal Pite, Sharon Eyal, George Balanchine, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Gregory Maqoma, and Maurice Béjart, among many others

The program also features two excursions to Berlin and Amsterdam to work closely with major choreographers and their choreographic process, as well as to gain new creative perspectives in different European cities.

The 2024 Olympics were a success for Paris but a calamity for some businesses

Parisian business owners and hotel managers were promised a summer like no other

PARIS -- Parisian business owners and hotel managers were promised a summer like no other. Millions of tourists would flood the French capital for the Olympic and Paralympic Games , generating huge profits for the region.

With the Games officially over, the time has come to run the numbers. And many in the Paris service industry say they had one of their worst summers ever — notably because of security restrictions around city-center Olympic venues.

Tom Denaive, who runs a jewelry store located between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde — which hosted multiple Olympic events — said the season was nothing short of “dramatic.”

In mid-June, the city closed the nearest metro station, then access to the scenic Tuileries Garden. A week before the opening ceremony on the River Seine, the nearby rue de Rivoli, a major pedestrian and commercial artery, was shut down.

“It was a dead street,” Denaive said. “I felt like we were back to the COVID days.”

Even the Louvre Museum reported a 22% drop in visits during the Olympic Games, and a 45% drop during the two weeks leading up to the opening ceremony compared to the same period a year ago.

Disappointment was also felt steps away on rue Saint-Honoré, home to some of Paris’ most prestigious hotels and haute couture shops.

“I have all the records from last year and we didn’t match a single one,'' said Marina Orlando, store manager at French luxury candle brand Diptyque. Orlando said sales in August were down 29% year on year.

“We were given a whole serenade about the Olympics, that it was going to be incredible. ... Some of us didn’t go on vacation, it was a huge logistical effort so that we could all be present on D-Day,” she said. In the end, she added, they had a store largely empty of customers.

Tourists did come to Paris in large numbers. Government data released last week show that some 1.7 million international visitors came during the Olympic period, up 13% compared with the previous year, and another 1.4 million French tourists visited the capital, up 26%. In addition, the Olympics drew millions more visitors who traveled to Paris for the day.

“I think that our country’s bet has paid off,” Olivia Grégoire, who leads the ministry charged with companies, tourism and consumption, told a news conference last week. Grégoire said France as a whole was on track to maintain — and potentially surpass — last year’s record-breaking tourism numbers.

But shopping was not the visitors' priority, shop owners and managers said. “They were here for the sports,” Orlando said.

Denaive agreed. He said that tourists “spent so much on hotels, flights, tickets ... they didn't have much of a budget left for shopping.”

Many visitors were struggling to get to shops and restaurants even if they wanted to, because Paris chose to host Olympic events in the heart of the capital rather than building an Olympic park outside the city center.

Protecting those venues involved a boosted security apparatus, deploying up to 45,000 police officers backed by a 10,000-strong contingent of soldiers and reinforcements from more than 40 countries.

Most Parisians and visitors welcomed the security measures, but not the metal-fence barriers erected on both sides of the River Seine that made the city hard to navigate.

Only those with a QR code were granted permission to pass police checkpoints, making it nearly impossible for those without one to commute between the city’s south and north, except by metro. Permission for the precious code could take days to obtain.

For Patrick Aboukrat, whose association represents 190 shopkeepers and restaurant owners in Paris’ central Marais neighborhood, the Olympics were “more than catastrophic.” From mid-June to the end of July, sales were down roughly 35% to 40% on average in the area, he said.

Aboukrat, who owns a fashion store, said the ready-to-wear industry was particularly hit, with an unexpectedly bad summer sales period. The city was quiet ahead of the Olympics, he recalled. “We expected to have a stronger activity than usual. We found ourselves with stocks to sell off and a very low cash flow.”

Aboukrat, like many others who talked to The Associated Press, eventually decided to close his store early in the summer. “It was not worth it, and those near me who remained open told me it was empty.”

Something similar happened at the Île de la Cité, the small island in the Seine where Notre Dame Cathedral sits. There, most merchants lost 40% to 50% of their turnover, according to Patrice Lejeune, president of the island's merchants' association.

The area was particularly difficult to reach during most of the Olympics as it was surrounded by security barriers.

Officials have said the restrictions were necessary to guarantee everyone’s safety.

Grégoire, from the tourism ministry, downplayed potential losses, saying that ”we often come across people who complain.”

On June 14, the government announced the creation of a commission to handle financial compensation requests from businesses claiming they were impacted negatively by the Games. Grégoire said it would apply only to those located within the perimeters targeted by security measures. The commission will start assessing requests in January.

Jean-Marc Banquet d’Orx, president of a union representing more than 2,000 hotels, restaurants and cafes in Paris, said everyone will eventually feel the benefits of the investments made in the city ahead of the Games.

“We can’t stop grumpy people,” Banquet d’Orx said. “But to those who complain, I say: The Olympics will have an impact on the years to come, not immediately.”

Simone Biles moves closer to 3rd Olympic trip as injuries mount behind her at US trials

Maybe the most remarkable thing about Simone Biles' decade-plus run redefining what's possible in gymnastics is how she has managed to stay healthy while doing it.

She is well-versed in the danger lurking at every turn, every twist, every landing. Blocking it all out and forging ahead may be her greatest skill, one that was put to the test on Friday night at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Before Biles hopped on the uneven bars in her first event, Kayla DiCello's hopes of joining Biles in Paris ended with a torn right Achilles suffered a few feet away on vault.

A short time later, Shilese Jones gingerly made her off the floor with a leg injury that left the six-time world championship medalist's status very much up in the air.

It's a lot to take in, even for a 27-year-old who has made the impossible look impossibly easy so often for so long.

The whole meet is, as she put it, “so stressful, so heavy.”

“If we can do this, we can do anything,” she added.

So while there were some uncharacteristically sloppy moments early, there was a splash of Biles' singular brilliance late on her way to an all-around total of 58.900 that put her position to lock up an automatic berth on the five-woman team that will be announced on Sunday night.

Still, it was hard to shake the image of two of her peers exiting in tears, all of it accompanied by an ever-present fear that never really goes away no matter how long you do this for a living.

“There is anxiety,” Biles longtime co-coach Laurent Landi said. “(It's) all right am I the next one to get hurt? What’s going to happen to me?'"

Landi's advice was simple and direct, long the most effective way to communicate with the biggest star of the U.S. Olympic movement.

“You can’t control this,” Landi told her. “So control the controllable.”

She did. Even on a night when she wasn't at her unparalleled best, she left little doubt she remains in control of her gymnastics and — perhaps most important of all — in control of her emotions.

While there was an uncharacteristically sloppy and shaky balance beam routine that left Biles cursing for all the cameras to see, there was also a standing ovation that accompanied her Yurchenko Double Pike vault, the one that's named after her in the sport's Code of Points and is among the most difficult done in the world by anyone, man or woman.

And so it goes for Biles, who will head to Paris heavily favored to bookend the Olympic all-around gold she won as a teenager in 2016.

A lot has happened since then, marriage, a fistful of world titles and a memorable trip to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she removed herself from multiple finals to focus on her mental health.

She took a two-year break from competition after returning from Japan but has looked as good as ever for most of the last 12 months, joking after her record ninth national title earlier this month she's “aging like fine wine.”

Biles hardly seems to be the only one.

Jordan Chiles, 23, is surging toward an Olympic spot just as she did three years ago. She finished in the top six on all four events on Friday, heady territory considering injuries earlier this year appeared to dim her chances of making it to Paris.

Now, not so much. Yet Chiles laughed when asked if her previous experience in this spot helped her navigate the complex emotions of a meet that can alter the life of the five women who hear their name called at the end of it.

“No,” Chiles said. “I literally was saying this earlier this morning. I was like ‘No matter what meet I’ve done in my life, this is the most stressful one I’ve done in my whole entire career.’ Because it’s that one night it’s like you either find out you make it or you don’t.”

Chiles appears on the verge of a return to her sport's biggest stage. So does reigning Olympic champion Sunisa Lee.

The 21-year-old Lee, who has spent most of the last two years battling kidney-related health issues, used a pair of excellent sets on uneven bars and balance beam in front of a hometown crowd to finish third.

Behind Lee was 24-year-old Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic champion on floor exercise. Carey, who has spent the last three years deftly straddling the line between collegiate and elite gymnastics, finished second behind Biles on vault and fourth on floor.

The biggest question heading into Sunday will center on who will land the fifth spot. Joscelyn Roberson — at 18 one of the younger athletes in the 13-woman field — used a powerful set on floor to finish fifth.

Yet USA Gymnastics officials stress they are not married to the idea of taking the top five in rank order at the end of trials, which is what happened under previous leadership in 2021.

Kaliya Lincoln put up the second-best score on floor. Hezley Rivera appears to be improving with each passing meet and 2020 Olympic alternate and four-time world championship medalist Leanne Wong has plenty of international experience.

The 21-year-old arrived at the Target Center already nursing a slightly torn labrum in her right shoulder. Then she landed awkwardly while warming up on vault, wrenching her left knee.

She exited briefly but returned to be introduced with the rest of the field. She skipped the vault in the first rotation but returned to grit through the uneven bars, her best event.

While Jones put together an excellent 14.625 even while doing a slightly watered-down routine, she gingerly made her way off the podium. She talked to medical staff for several minutes before leaving for good.

Whether Jones tries to give it a shot on Sunday is unclear. What is clear — what has always been clear since making her senior debut in 2013 — is that there is Biles, and there is everyone else.
